In this work, the structural and physical properties of the (0.6)BiFeO3-(0.4)PbTiO3 + x% La compounds, synthesized by high-energy ball milling, were investigated as a function of La concentration for understanding the structure/property relations in these materials. The X-ray and neutron diffraction results revealed potentialities for performing structural tuning by adding La in these materials. In fact, a structural phase transition, from tetragonal to romboedral, as well as the coexistence of both symmetries for 3% of La, was observed with the increase of the La content. In fact, the Rietveld refinement analyses indicated that the romboedral phase changes from R3m to R3c for 5 % of La. The transmission electron microscopic studies revealed narrow ferroelectric domain-walls in tetragonal (90° domainswalls) and romboedral (180° domain-walls) symmetries. The morphotropic phase boundary, which would be the interface between two symmetries in a same particle, was not observed in the sample studied in this work. The time dependency of the electrical resistivity, i. e., the equilibrium electrical resistivity, was analyzed and the results reveal that the La doping controls the formation of charge carriers in these materials. The "electric polarization vectors", per unit cell, were determined by using the mean average position of the cations and anions, obtained from the Rietveld refinement, and indicated polarized unit cells for all studied compositions. However, only those samples with 3% and 5% of La showed a measurable macroscopic ferroelectric behavior. In summary, the whole set of results indicate a strong correlation between ferroic properties and structure in all studied samples, and that these correlations can be changed by atomic, chemical and structural changes promoted by the La doping. Finally, the determination of the magnetoelectric response suggests that these compounds can potentiality used in advanced technological applications in multifunctional devices. Neste trabalho, as propriedades físicas e estruturais dos compostos (0,6)BiFeO3-(0,4)PbTiO3 + x% La, sintetizados por moagem em altas energias, foram investigadas em função da concentração de La com o intuito de compreender as relações estrutura/propriedade nesses materiais. Os resultados obtidos por difração de raios X e nêutrons revelaram a possibilidade de uma sintonização estrutural dos materiais estudados, por meio da adição de La. De fato, uma transição da simetria tetragonal para a simetria romboédrica, com o aumento da concentração de La, assim como a coexistência dessas duas simetrias para 3 % de La, foi observada. As análises por refinamento estrutural Rietveld indicaram que a simetria romboédrica muda do grupo espacial R3m para o R3c em amostras com 5 % de La. Os estudos por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão revelaram paredes de domínios ferroelétricos muito estreitas nas estruturas com simetria tetragonal (domínios de 90°) e romboédrica (domínios de 180°). O contorno de fases morfotrópico, que seria a interface entre duas simetrias estruturais presentes em uma mesma partícula, não foi observado na amostra estudada neste trabalho. A resistividade elétrica foi analisada e os resultados revelam que a dopagem com La controla a formação dos portadores de carga elétrica nesses materiais. Os "vetores momento de dipolo elétrico", por cela unitária, foram calculados a partir da posição média de cátions e ânions obtidas por refinamento estrutural Rietveld, e indicam que todas as composições têm suas celas unitárias polarizadas. Contudo, somente as amostras dopadas com 3 % e 5 % de La apresentam o comportamento ferroelétrico macroscópico mensurável. Em suma, o conjunto de resultados coletados neste trabalho indicou uma forte correlação entre as propriedades ferroicas e a estrutura das amostras estudadas, e que essa correlação pode ser alterada por meio das alterações atômicas, químicas e estruturais promovidas pela adição de La. Por fim, a determinação da resposta magnetoelétrica desses compostos nos permite inferir que os mesmos possuem um grande potencial para aplicações tecnonlógicas em dispositivos multifuncionais. xv, 182 f
