Background. Skin wounds are closely correlated with opportunistic infections and sepsis risk. Due to the need of more efficient healing drugs, animal peptides are emerging as new molecular platforms to accelerate skin wound closure and to prevent and control bacterial infection. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the preclinical evidence on the impact of animal peptides on skin wound healing. In addition, we carried out a critical analysis of the studies’ methodological quality. Main Methods. This systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines, using a structured search on the PubMed-Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science platforms to retrieve studies published until August 25, 2020 at 3 : 00 pm. The studies included were limited to those that used animal models, investigated the effect of animal peptides with no association with other compounds on wound healing, and that were published in English. Bias analysis and methodological quality assessments were examined through the SYRCLE’s RoB tool. Results. Thirty studies were identified using the PRISMA workflow. In general, animal peptides were effective in accelerating skin wound healing, especially by increasing cellular proliferation, neoangiogenesis, colagenogenesis, and reepithelialization. Considering standardized methodological quality indicators, we identified a marked heterogeneity in research protocols and a high risk of bias associated with limited characterization of the experimental designs. Conclusion. Animal peptides show a remarkable healing potential with biotechnological relevance for regenerative medicine. However, rigorous experimental approaches are still required to clearly delimit the mechanisms underlying the healing effects and the risk-benefit ratio attributed to peptide-based treatments.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Variações na dieta, volume e qualidade do alimento, podem provocar alterações no trato gastrointestinal, além de influenciarem nas reservas de glicogênio e deposição de gordura corporal. O morcego nectarívoro Anoura caudifer tem a capacidade de mudar sua dieta, em diferentes estações do ano, para outros recursos alimentares, podendo produzir respostas morfológicas e fisiológicas a essas variações. Considerando isto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar como a mudança de dieta provoca alterações na morfologia intestinal e nos teores de reservas energéticas e de proteínas nessa espécie. Para isso, foram analisados parâmetros corporais, índices hepatossomático, lipossomático e viscerossomático, conteúdo gastrointestinal, morfologia, histoquímica e morfometria dos intestinos delgado (ID) e grosso (IG), teores de glicose, glicogênio muscular e hepático, proteínas, gordura, e matéria seca em machos e fêmeas, entre as estações chuvosa e seca. Na estação chuvosa, A. caudifer consumiu insetos e fibras vegetais, as vilosidades foram frequentemente digitiformes e de menor altura (815,71 μm) e o IG apresentou pregas circulares; na estação seca, a escassez de alimento restringiu esta espécie ao consumo de pólen, poucas fibras vegetais e possivelmente néctar; houve maior altura da mucosa, maior altura e variação na forma das vilosidades (1.080,32 μm) e IG sem pregas circulares Os teores de glicose e glicogênio e o índice hepatossomático foram significativamente maiores na estação chuvosa. Comparando os gêneros, presença de gordura corpórea foi encontrado somente nas fêmeas na estação chuvosa e o teor de proteína bruta corpórea foi maior nas fêmeas em ambas as estações. A mucosa do ID foi ajustada para acomodar um maior volume de alimento no período chuvoso, e as pregas circulares do IG podem ter otimizado o maior volume de alimento digerido e de massa fecal, indicando que essa espécie encontra condições alimentares favoráveis nesse período. Na estação seca, a mucosa do ID se desenvolveu para compensar a menor quantidade disponível de alimento. A alta taxa glicêmica e de reserva glicídica, refletindo no índice hepatossomático, é condizente com a maior disponibilidade de alimento na estação chuvosa. Em relação aos teores de proteína bruta e gordura, a diferença entre machos e fêmeas certamente se relaciona com aspectos reprodutivos, com maior demanda energética nas fêmeas para a reprodução. Deste modo, a sazonalidade de recursos alimentares provoca ajustes na morfologia intestinal, o que se adequa à sincronização reprodutiva para a estação mais favorável, onde as reservas de glicogênio, gordura e proteína corporais garantem um melhor desempenho e sobrevivência dessa espécie. Variations in diet, volume and quality of food can cause changes in the gastrointestinal tract, in addition to influencing glycogen reserves and body fat deposition. The nectar- feeding bat Anoura caudifer can change its diet at different seasons of the year to other food resources, and it is able to produce morphological and physiological responses to these variations. Considering this, the objective of this work was to investigate how the change in diet causes alterations in intestinal morphology and in the levels of energy and protein reserves in this species. For this, body parameters, hepatosomatic, liposomatic and viscerosomatic indices, gastrointestinal content, morphology, histochemistry and morphometry of the small (SI) and large (LI) intestines, glucose, muscle and liver glycogen, protein, fat, and dry matter in males and females, between the rainy and dry seasons. In the rainy season, A. caudifer consumed insects and plant fibers, the villi were often digitiform and had shorter height (815.71 μm) and the LI presented circular folds; in the dry season, the scarcity of food restricted this species to the consumption of pollen, few vegetable fibers and possibly nectar; there was greater mucosal height, greater height, and variation in the shape of the villi (1,080.32 μm) and LI without circular folds. The glucose and glycogen contents and the hepatosomatic index were significantly higher in the rainy season. Comparing the genders, the presence of body fat was found only in females in the rainy season and the body crude protein content was higher in females in both seasons. The SI mucosa was adjusted to accommodate a greater volume of food in the rainy season, and the circular folds of the LI may have optimized the greater volume of digested food and fecal mass, indicating that this species finds favorable food conditions in this period. In the dry season, the SI mucosa developed to compensate for the lesser amount of food available. The high glycemic rate and glucose reserve, reflecting on the hepatosomatic index, is consistent with the greater availability of food in the rainy season. Regarding crude protein and fat contents, the difference between males and females is certainly related to reproductive aspects, with greater energy demand in females for reproduction. In this way, the seasonality of food resources causes adjustments in the intestinal morphology, which suits the reproductive synchronization for the most favorable season, where the body's glycogen, fat and protein reserves guarantee a better performance and survival of this species. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) A Atrazina (ATZ) é um herbicida sintético amplamente utilizado no controle de plantas daninhas devido a sua capacidade de inibição da fotossíntese. Entretanto, seu uso frequente, associado à sua alta solubilidade na água, tem causado intensa contaminação do ambiente aquático e de espécies não-alvo. Considerando os dados existentes sobre a toxicologia da atrazina, o presente estudo traz uma nova abordagem por meio da avaliação dos efeitos da exposição de doses ambientalmente relevantes do herbicida ATZ sobre o balanço oxidativo, regulação hormonal e desempenho produtivo de peixes juvenis Neotropicais da espécie Astyanax altiparanae. Após 35 dias de exposição às concentrações: 0,00 (CTR-controle), 0,56 (ATZ0,56), 1,00 (ATZ1,00) 1,66 (ATZ1,66) e 11,66 μg/L (ATZ11,66) foi observado aumento nos níveis dos marcadores oxidativos malondialdeído (MDA) e proteínas carboniladas (PC) no músculo de peixes do grupo ATZ11,66. Aumentos de MDA também foram observados nas brânquias e fígado dos peixes ATZ11,66. Houve aumento da atividade das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) e glutationa S-transferase (GST) no músculo e fígado de peixes expostos ao grupo ATZ11,66. Nas brânquias, houve aumento de CAT em ATZ11,66 e GST em todos os grupos expostos ao herbicida. Peixes expostos a ATZ11,66 também apresentaram aumento nos níveis de cortisol e glicose sanguínea, bem como diminuição de 36,6% na taxa de sobrevivência. Nossos resultados sugerem que a exposição a concentrações ambientalmente relevantes do herbicida ATZ, sobretudo 11,66 μg/L, provocam danos oxidativos teciduais especialmente em fragmentos de músculo, bem como alterações metabólicas e endócrinas, capazes de comprometer a sobrevivência de peixes juvenis, e, portanto, causar prejuízos à produção desta espécie. Palavras-chave: Ecotoxicologia. Estresse oxidativo. Hormônios. Sobrevivência. Atrazine (ATZ) is a synthetic herbicide widely used in weed control due to its capacity to inhibit photosynthesis. However, its frequent use, associated with its high solubility in water, has caused contamination of the aquatic environment and non-target species. Considering the existing data on atrazine toxicology, the present study brings a new approach through the evaluation of the effects of exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the herbicide ATZ on the oxidative balance, hormonal regulation and productive performance of Neotropical juvenile fish Astyanax altiparanae species. After 35 days of exposure to concentrations as follow: 0.00 (CTR-control), 0.56 (ATZ0.56), 1.00 (ATZ1.00), 1.66 (ATZ1.66) and 11.66 μg/L (ATZ11.66), we observed an increase in oxidative markers levels such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and carbonylated proteins (CP) in muscle from fish ATZ11.66. Increase in MDA were also observed in the gills and liver of ATZ11.66 fish. There was an increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes in muscle and liver of fish exposed to ATZ11.66 group. In the gills, there was an increase in CAT in ATZ11.66 and GST in all groups exposed to herbicide. Fish from ATZ11.66 group also showed increase in cortisol and blood glucose levels, as well as decrease of 36.6% in survival rate. Our results show that exposure to environmentally relevant doses of the ATZ herbicide, mainly 11.66 μg/L, causes tissue oxidative damage, especially in muscle fragments, as well as metabolic and endocrine changes, impairing fish development, and therefore causes damage to the production of this species.
