Abstract

The loneliness of hot Jupiters supports the high-eccentricity migration as a primary path leading to the formation of systems with those planets stripped of any close-in planetary companions. Here we present the null results of searches for low-mass planets close to hot Jupiters in 10 planetary systems: HAT-P-4, HAT-P-10, HAT-P-12, HAT-P-17, HAT-P-19, HAT-P-32, HAT-P-44, Qatar-6, TrES-4, and WASP-48. We employed multi-sector time-series photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite enhanced with new ground-based transit light curves to determine the sizes of hypothetical planets that might still avoid being detected. We redetermined transit parameters for the known hot Jupiters using a homogenous approach. We refuted transit timing variations for HAT-P-12 b, claimed recently in the literature. The transit timing data permitted us to place tighter constraints on third bodies in HAT-P-19 and HAT-P-32 systems detected in Doppler measurements. Abstract

In this paper we present a simple, yet typical simulation in statistical physics, consisting of large scale Monte Carlo simulations followed by an involved statistical analysis of the results. The purpose is to provide an example publication to explore tools for writing reproducible papers. The simulation estimates the critical temperature where the Ising model on the square lattice becomes magnetic to be Tc /J = 2.26934(6) using a finite size scaling analysis of the crossing points of Binder cumulants. Abstract

The role of graded interfaces between materials in a cylindrical free-standing quantum wire with longitudinal heterostructures is theoretically investigated, by solving the Schr\"odinger equation within the effective mass approximation. Previous work on such wires with abrupt interfaces have predicted that, as the wire radius is reduced, the effective potential along the growth direction is altered and might lead to a carrier confinement at the barriers, as in a type-II system. Our results show that when graded interfaces are considered, such potential acquires a peculiar form, which presents cusps at the interfacial regions, yielding to electron confinement at interfaces. Numerical results also show that, in some special cases, interfacial confinement and type-I to type-II transitions can also be induced by applying a magnetic field parallel to the wire axis., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We present release 2.0 of the ALPS (Algorithms and Libraries for Physics Simulations) project, an open source software project to develop libraries and application programs for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum lattice models such as quantum magnets, lattice bosons, and strongly correlated fermion systems. The code development is centered on common XML and HDF5 data formats, libraries to simplify and speed up code development, common evaluation and plotting tools, and simulation programs. The programs enable non-experts to start carrying out serial or parallel numerical simulations by providing basic implementations of the important algorithms for quantum lattice models: classical and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) using non-local updates, extended ensemble simulations, exact and full diagonalization (ED), the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) both in a static version and a dynamic time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) code, and quantum Monte Carlo solvers for dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The ALPS libraries provide a powerful framework for programers to develop their own applications, which, for instance, greatly simplify the steps of porting a serial code onto a parallel, distributed memory machine. Major changes in release 2.0 include the use of HDF5 for binary data, evaluation tools in Python, support for the Windows operating system, the use of CMake as build system and binary installation packages for Mac OS X and Windows, and integration with the VisTrails workflow provenance tool. Abstract

A new formulation of a Logistic deterministic S-N curve is applied to fatigue data of metallic materials from ancient Portuguese riveted steel bridges. This formulation is based on a modified logistic relation that uses three parameters to fit the low-cycle- (LCF), finite-life- and high-cycle-fatigue (HCF) regions. This model is compared to the Kohout-Vechet fatigue model, which has a refined adjustment from very low-cycle fatigue (VLCF) to very high-cycle fatigue (VHCF). These models are also compared with other models, such as, power law and fatigue-life curve from the ASTM E739 standard. The modelling performance of the S-N curves was made using the fatigue data considering the stress fatigue damage parameter for the materials from the Eiffel, Luiz I, F�o and Trez�i riveted steel bridges. Using a qualitative methodology of graphical adjustment analysis and another quantitative using the mean square error, it was possible to evaluate the performance of the mean S-N curve formulation. The results showed that the formulation of the S-N curve using the Logistic equation applied to the metallic materials from the old bridges resulted in a superior performance when compared with others models under consideration, both in the estimation of fatigue behaviour in the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) region and in the lowest mean square error.

Abstract

Numerical simulations are performed for isolated cyclic chains with excluded volume. Data are reported for the form factor, S(x), where x is the reduced scattering variable, and also for averages and distributions of the distance between intramolecular units. The averages of distances are compared with two alternative expressions describing their dependence with the number of segments separating the units. The distribution function results are compared with the des Cloizeaux form. Finally the S(x) data are compared with theoretical functions also derived from the des Cloizeaux expression for the distribution function. Moreover, the low x and asymptotic expansions of these functions are obtained. Based on these expansions, simple formulas are proposed to give a good description of the simulation data in the whole range of values of x. 45. Exciton trapping in magnetic wire structures

Abstract

The lateral magnetic confinement of quasi two-dimensional excitons into wire like structures is studied. Spin effects are take into account and two different magnetic field profiles are considered, which experimentally can be created by the deposition of a ferromagnetic stripe on a semiconductor quantum well with magnetization parallel or perpendicular to the grown direction of the well. We find that it is possible to confine excitons into one-dimensional (1D) traps. We show that the dependence of the confinement energy on the exciton wave vector, which is related to its free direction of motion along the wire direction, is very small. Through the application of a background magnetic field it is possible to move the position of the trapping region towards the edge of the ferromagnetic stripe or even underneath the stripe. The exact position of this 1D exciton channel depends on the strength of the background magnetic field and on the magnetic polarisation direction of the ferromagnetic film., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, to be published in J. Abstract

The trapping of excitons in a semiconductor quantum well due to a circular symmetric nonhomogeneous magnetic field is studied. The effect of the spin state of the exciton on its trapping energy is analyzed, and the importance of the interaction of the orbital and spin Zeeman effect as compared to the diamagnetic term in the exciton Hamiltonian is emphasized. Magnetic field profiles are considered, which can experimentally be created through the deposition of ferromagnetic disks on top of a semiconductor heterostructure. This setup gives rise to a magnetic dipole type of profile in the $xy$ plane of the exciton motion. We find that the spin direction of the exciton influences its localization by changing the confinement region in the effective potential. The exciton confinement increases with magnetic field intensity, and this is more pronounced when the exciton g-factor is different from zero. The numerical calculations are performed for GaAs/Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As quantum wells and we show that it open up a new realistic path for experiments designed to probe exciton trapping in semiconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to phys. rev. Abstract

The effective Hamiltonian describing the motion of an exciton in an external non-homogeneous magnetic field is derived. The magnetic field plays the role of an effective potential for the exciton motion, results into an increment of the exciton mass and modifies the exciton kinetic energy operator. In contrast to the homogeneous field case, the exciton in a non-homogeneous magnetic field can also be trapped in the low field region and the field gradient increases the exciton confinement. The trapping energy and wave function of the exciton in a GaAs two-dimensional electron gas for specific circular magnetic field configurations are calculated. The results show than excitons can be trapped by non-homogeneous magnetic fields, and that the trapping energy is strongly correlated with the shape and strength of the non-homogeneous magnetic field profile., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures
