Finding the production date of a pre-modern manuscript is commonly a long process in historical research, requiring days of work from highly specialised experts. In this paper, we present an automatic dating method based on modelling both the language and the image data. By creating a statistical model over the changes in the pen strokes and short character sequences in the transcribed text, a combination of multiple estimators give a distribution over the time line for each manuscript. We have evaluated our estimation scheme on the medieval charter collection "Svenskt Diplomatariums huvudkartotek" (SDHK), including more than 5300 transcribed charters from the period 1135 - 1509. Our system is capable of achieving a median absolute error of 12 years, where the only human input is a transcription of the charter text. Since reading and transcribing the text is a skill that many researchers and students have, compared to the more specialized skill of dating medieval manuscripts based on palaeographical expertise, we find our novel approach suitable for helping individual researchers to date collections of manuscript pages. For larger collections, transcriptions could also be collected using crowd sourcing. q2b q2b_vr2012

Adenosine-diphosphate-induced platelet adhesiveness to glass beads has been estimated in 50 patients with previous myocardial infarction and 50 matched controls. Similar degrees of adhesiveness were found in both groups. No correlation was found between platelet adhesiveness and glucose tolerance as estimated by the intravenous glucose tolerance test, serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Platelet adhesiveness did not change after an intravenous glucose load. Platelet adhesiveness in a group of 20 insulin-treated diabetics was significantly higher than in the healthy controls, but did not differ from the group with ischaemic heart disease. The mean cholesterol levels of patients and controls were similar, but the triglyceride levels were significantly higher in the patients.

Blood inorganic phosphate, pyruvate and lactate have been determined during an intravenous glucose tolerance test in a group of subjects with ischemic cardiovascular disease (ID) and in a group with overt diabetes mellitus. Among the subjects with ID, fasting blood inorganic phosphate decreased with decreasing glucose tolerance. Fasting levels of both pyruvate and lactate increased with increasing fasting blood glucose. None of these correlations was observed in the diabetics. After intravenous administration of glucose a fall of inorganic phosphate was observed, the magnitude of which correlated positively to the glucose tolerance in all subjects. Blood pyruvate and lactate rose in the subjects with ischemic disease and normal glucose tolerance, and decreased in the diabetics after glucose injection. Positive correlations were observed in all subjects between the changes in pyruvate and lactate and the glucose tolerance.

In this paper, we propose a novel pipeline forautomated scribal attribution based on the Quill feature: 1) Wecompensate the Quill feature histogram for pen changes andpage warping. 2) We add curvature as a third dimension in thefeature histogram, to better separate characteristics like loopsand lines. 3) We also investigate the use of several dissimilaritymeasures between the feature histograms. 4) We propose andevaluate semi-supervised learning for classification, to reducethe need of labeled samples.Our evaluation is performed on 1104 pages from a 15thcentury Swedish manuscript. It was chosen because it repre-sents a significant part of Swedish manuscripts of said period.Our results show that only a few percent of the materialneed labelling for average precisions above 95%. Our novelcurvature and registration extensions, together with semi-supervised learning, outperformed the current Quill feature. q2b q2b_vr2012

An inexpensive robotic system intended for educational use in parallel algorithms for embedded control and signal processing is described. The hardware platform is comprised of a state-of-the-art multi-core system in a wireless network with several mobile LEGO robots that collect data from their environment. The setup covers a broad range of real-time cooperative and parallel problems arising in sensor networks, robotics, surveillance and high-performance embedded applications. As an illustration, a bearings-only tracking problem, estimating both mobile robots positions and the position of a non-cooperating target by using parallel particle filtering, is solved on the proposed platform. In order to improve the estimation accuracy and to adjust to changes in the environment and movements of the target, a controller positioning the mobile robots is utilized.

This paper presents novel results for word spotting based on dynamic time warping applied to medieval manuscripts in Latin and Old Swedish. A target word is marked by a user, and the method automatically finds similar word forms in the document by matching them against the target. The method automatically identifies pages and lines. We show that our method improves accuracy compared to earlier proposals for this kind of handwriting. An advantage of the new method is that it performs matching within a text line without presupposing that the difficult problem of segmenting the text line into individual words has been solved. We evaluate our word spotting implementation on two medieval manuscripts representing two script types. We also show that it can be useful by helping a user find words in a manuscript and present graphs of word statistics as a function of page number.

The material consists of 667 patients with acute myocardial infarction who were treated at the Seraphimer Hospital during the period 1950–1959. There were 471 men and 196 women, which gives a sex ratio of 2.4. The mean age of the total material was 63.1 years: 61.4 years for the men and 67.2 years for the women. The mean age seemed to be increasing over the period of time covered. Hypertension was present in 19.6 per cent of the total material. The mean age of these patients was 66.2 years, and the ratio of men to women was 0.6, both of which figures are of significant difference from the rest of the material. Diabetes mellitus was present in 8.8 per cent of the material. The mean age and the sex ratio of these patients did not differ significantly from those of the rest of the material. Antecedent angina pectoris was present in 43.7 per cent of the patients with one myocardial infarction. The mean age and the sex ratio of these patients did not differ significantly from the rest of the material. Twenty-seven per cent of the patients with one myocardial infarction had had neither antecedent angina pectoris, diabetes mellitus nor hypertension. The mean age of these patients was 59.2 years, and the sex ratio was 4.7, which figures differ significantly from those of the rest of the material. Electrocardiograms were diagnostic of myocardial infarction in 87.0 per cent of the patients. The enzymes GOT, GPT, and LD showed diagnostic elevations in 95 per cent of the patients. Pathologic elevation of white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and temperature occurred in 66, 81, and 86 per cent of the patients, respectively. Routine treatment during the whole period consisted of heparin intravenously and dicoumarol orally. The mortality rate of the total material was 33.1 per cent. The mortality of the men and women did not differ significantly. The mortality rate rose with advancing age, and the mean age of those patients who died was significantly higher than that of those who survived. Hypertension, angina pectoris, and diabetes mellitus had no significant prognostic influence on the acute mortality. Shock occurred in 13.1 per cent of the patients, with a mortality of 84.3 per cent. The mean age and sex ratio of these patients were not significantly different from those of the rest of the material. Pulmonary edema occurred in 11 per cent of the patients, with a mortality of 63 per cent. The mean age of these patients was significantly higher than that of the rest of the material, but the sex ratio showed no significant difference. The combination of shock and pulmonary edema carried a mortality of 100 per cent.

The present investigation has shown a significant but weak correlation between the IVGT and the IVTR in patients with ischemic cardiovascular disease. For diagnostic purposes an adjustment of the criteria for IVTR given by Unger and Madison is suggested.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses glucose tolerance in ischemic cardiovascular disease (ICD), which may develop throughout the body, mainly in the heart, legs, brain, and the kidneys. Statistical evidence for an association between abnormal carbohydrate metabolism and ICD was presented in 1922 by Le vine, who found 7% diabetics in a group of patients with angina pectoris. The metabolic events responsible for the development of ICD remain largely unknown, whether diabetes is present or not. Glucose tolerance has been determined by oral and intravenous methods. Obesity is associated with a high prevalence of diabetes mellitus, but the influence of obesity on glucose tolerance in nondiabetics is not clear, as conflicting results have been reported. Studies on patients with ICD have consequently shown an association between this disease and low glucose tolerance. Glucose tolerance in ICD has been studied with oral and intravenous methods. Irrespective of methods used, glucose tolerance is low in groups of patients with ICD, and in samples of subjects with low glucose tolerance the prevalence of ICD is high.
