Influenza, an acute viral respiratory disease that is currently causing severe financial and resource strains worldwide. With the recent COVID-19 pandemic exceeding 153 million cases worldwide, there is a need for a low-cost and contactless surveillance system to detect symptomatic individuals, more so in counties with limited healthcare resources. As with many diseases, there are bio-clinical signals relating to the physical symptoms. The main objective of this study was to develop FluNet, a novel, proof-of-concept, low-cost and contactless device for the detection of high-risk individuals. The system passively conducts face detection in the longwave infrared domain with a precision rating of 0.9798 and mean intersection over union of 0.7386 while sequentially taking the temperature trend of faces with a thermal accuracy of ± 1 K. While in parallel determining if someone in audible proximity is coughing by using a custom deep convolutional neural network with a precision rating of 0.9519. In addition to presenting FluNet, two datasets have been constructed, one for face detection in the longwave infrared domain consisting of 250 images of 20 participants’ faces at various rotations and coverings, including face masks. The other for the real-time detection of cough patterns comprised of a sizeable dataset of 40,482 cough / not cough sounds, coupled with a new lightweight artificial neural network architecture for the classification of cough spectrograms. These findings could be helpful for future low-cost edge computing applications for influenza-like monitoring.

The phenomenology of synaesthesia provides numerous cognitive benefits, which could be used towards augmenting interactive experiences with more refined multisensorial capabilities leading to more engaging and enriched experiences, better designs, and more transparent human-machine interfaces. In this study, we report a novel framework for the transformation of odours into the visual domain by applying the ideology from synaesthesia, to a low cost, portable, augmented reality/virtual reality system. The benefits of generating an artificial form of synesthesia are outlined and implemented using a custom made electronic nose to gather information about odour sources which is then sent to a mobile computing engine for characterisation, classification, and visualisation. The odours are visualised in the form of coloured 2D abstract shapes in real-time. Our results show that our affordable system has the potential to increase human odour discrimination comparable to that of natural syneasthesia highlighting the prospects for augmenting human-machine interfaces with an artificial form of this phenomenon.

Mobile HMDs must sacrifice compute performance to achieve ergonomic and power requirements for extended use. Consequently, applications must either reduce rendering and simulation complexity - along with the richness of the experience - or offload complexity to a server. Within the context of edge-computing, a popular way to do this is through render streaming. Render streaming has been demonstrated for desktops and consoles. It has also been explored for HMDs. However, the latency requirements of head tracking make this application much more challenging. While mobile GPUs are not yet as capable as their desktop counterparts, we note that they are becoming more powerful and efficient. With the hard requirements of VR, it is worth continuing to investigate what schemes could optimally balance load, latency and quality. We propose an alternative we call edge-physics: streaming at the scene-graph level from a simulation running on edge-resources, analogous to cluster rendering. Scene streaming is not only straightforward, but compute and bandwidth efficient. The most demanding loops run locally. Jobs that hit the power-wall of mobile CPUs are off-loaded, while improving GPUs are leveraged, maximising compute utilisation. In this paper we create a prototypical implementation and evaluate its potential in terms of fidelity, bandwidth and performance. We show that an effective system which maintains high consistencies on typical edge-links can be easily built, but that some traditional concepts are not applicable, and a better understanding of the perception of motion is required to evaluate such a system comprehensively.

Distributed Virtual Environments (DVEs) are challenging to create as the goals of consistency and responsiveness become contradictory under increasing latency. DVEs have been considered as both distributed transactional databases and force-reflection systems. Both are good approaches, but they do have drawbacks. Transactional systems do not support Level 3 (L3) collaboration: manipulating the same degree-of-freedom at the same time. Force-reflection requires a client-server architecture and stabilisation techniques. With Consensus Based Networking (CBN), we suggest DVEs be considered as a distributed data-fusion problem. Many simulations run in parallel and exchange their states, with remote states integrated with continous authority. Over time the exchanges average out local differences, performing a distribued-average of a consistent, shared state. CBN aims to build simulations that are highly responsive, but consistent enough for use cases such as the piano-movers problem. CBN's support for heterogeneous nodes can transparently couple different input methods, avoid the requirement of determinism, and provide more options for personal control over the shared experience. Our work is early, however we demonstrate many successes, including L3 collaboration in room-scale VR, 1000's of interacting objects, complex configurations such as stacking, and transparent coupling of haptic devices. These have been shown before, but each with a different technique; CBN supports them all within a single, unified system.

The development of an accurate, efficient and lightweight distributed solution for the detection and prevention of DDoS attacks provides network designers with new options to monitor and secure networks according to their strategic needs. Here we present, a lightweight architecture that distinguishes attack network flows from normal traffic flows with a detection accuracy of over 99.9%. The architecture presented is optimised for deployment in low-cost environments for efficient, rapid detection and prevention of DDoS attacks. To achieve a computationally efficiency architecture, the system was trained with a minimal number of features using a robust features selection approach and validated against the CIC 2017 and 2019 datasets. Analysis of the design is presented and results shows that the new architecture uses just 7% processing power of the detection system and provides no additional overhead to the monitored network.

A novel strategy for the direct analysis of non-conjugated steroids in water using paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) has been developed. PS-MS was used in the identification and quantification of non-conjugated (free) steroids in fish tank water samples. Data shown herein indicates that individual amounts of free steroids can be detected in aqua as low as; 0.17 ng/µL, 0.039 ng/µL, 0.43 ng/µL, 0.0076 ng/µL for aldosterone, corticosterone, cortisol, and β-estrone, respectively, and with an average relative standard deviation of ca. in aqua.

Paper-based microfluidic channels were created from solid wax printing, and the resultant 2D wax-printed paper substrates were used for paper spray (PS) mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of small organic compounds. Controlling fluid flow at the tip of the wax-printed paper triangles enabled the use of lower spray voltages (0.5-1 kV) and extended signal lifetime (10 minutes) in PS-MS. High sensitivity (sub ng mL(-1) levels) and quantitation precision (10% RSD) have been achieved in the analysis of illicit drugs in 4 μL of raw urine (fresh and dry), as well as corrosion inhibitors and pesticides in water samples. The reported study encourages the future development of disposable 3D microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, which function with simple operation but capable of on-chip analyte detection by MS; such a device can replace the traditional complex laboratory procedures for MS analysis to enable on-site in situ sampling with portable mass spectrometers.

A novel, lightweight (0.6 kg), solvent- and gas-cylinder-free, hand-held ion source based on desorption atmospheric pressure chemical ionization has been developed and deployed for the analysis of nitroaromatic explosives on surfaces in open air, offering portability for in-field analysis. A small, inexpensive, rechargeable lithium polymer battery was used to power the custom-designed circuitry within the device, which generates up to ±5 kV dc voltage to ignite a corona discharge plasma in air for up to 12 h of continuous operation, and allowing positive- and negative-ion mass spectrometry. The generated plasma is pneumatically transported to the surface to be interrogated by ambient air at a rate of 1-3.5 L/min, compressed using a small on-board diaphragm pump. The plasma source allows liquid or solid samples to be examined almost instantaneously without any sample preparation in the open environment. The advantages of low carrier gas and low power consumption (6 W), as well as zero solvent usage, have aided in developing the field-ready, hand-held device for trigger-based, "near-real-time" sampling/ionization. Individual nitroaromatic explosives (such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) can be easily detected in amounts as low as 5.8 pg with a linear dynamic range of at least 10 (10-100 pg), a relative standard deviation of ca. 7%, and an R(2) value of 0.9986. Direct detection of several nitroaromatic compounds in a complex mixture without prior sample preparation is demonstrated, and their identities are confirmed by tandem mass spectrometry fragmentation patterns.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is widely regarded as the most sensitive and specific general purpose analytical technique. More than a century has passed for MS since the ground-breaking work of Nobel laureate Sir Joseph John Thomson in 1913. This Colloquium aims to (1) give an historical overview of the major instrumentation achievements that have driven mass spectrometry forward in the past century, including those leading up to the initial work of Thomson, (2) provide the nonspecialist with an introduction to MS, and (3) highlight some key applications of MS and explore the current and future trends. Because of the vastness of the subject area and quality of the manifold research efforts that have been undertaken over the last 100 years, which have contributed to the foundations and subsequent advances in mass spectrometry, it should be understood that not all of the key contributions may have been included in this Colloquium. Mass spectrometry has embraced a multitude of scientific disciplines and to recognize all of the achievements is an impossible task, such has been the diverse impact of this invaluable technique. Scientific progress is usually made via the cumulative effort of a large number of researchers; the achievements reported herein are only a representation of that effort.

The deflection of charged particle beams by electric and/or magnetic fields is invariably based on the field centred approach associated with Maxwell-Lorentz and incorporated into the Lorentz force formula. Here we present an alternative method of calculation based on the force formula of Weber-Ritz and which does not involve, directly, the field entities E and B. In this study we evaluate the deflection of an electron beam by a long solenoid carrying direct current and positioned centrally across the beam. The experiment has some bearing on the Aharonov-Bohm effect in that our calculations indicate that even for very long solenoids the classical force on the beam remains finite. The standard interpretation of the effect is, however, in terms of quantum mechanics and vector potential. Experimental measurements have been made of electron beam deflections by three solenoids, 0.25 m, 0.50 m and 0.75 m long; each solenoid is doubly wound with the same winding density (2600 turns per metre) and carrying the same current of 5.00 A d.c.. Our results indicate that, within the limits of experimental error, both Weber-Ritz and Maxwell-Lorentz theories correlate with measurements for the longer solenoids. However in the case of the shortest solenoid, the lack of uniformity of the magnetic field, leads to significant error in the calculation of beam deflection by the Lorentz force. By contrast in a Weber-Ritz calculation a precise value of beam deflection is obtained by equating the impulse of the non uniform beam force to the vertical momentum change of the electron. This is a fundamentally different approach which uses a statistical summation of forces on the beam in terms of relative velocities between moving electrons and involves a direct computation of the vertical force on the beam due to the circling solenoid current. This method has distinct advantages in terms of economy; that is, it does not involve directly field entities E and B, nor the leakage flux from the solenoid or the vector potential.

The reactivity of aryl cations toward molecular nitrogen is studied systematically in an ion trap mass spectrometer at 10(2) Pascal of nitrogen, the pressure of the Titan main haze layer. Nucleophilic addition of dinitrogen occurs and the nature of aryl group has a significant influence on the reactivity, through inductive effects and by changing the ground state spin multiplicity. The products of nitrogen activation, aryldiazonium ions, react with typical nitriles, aromatic amines, and alkynes (compounds that are relevant as possible Titan atmosphere constituents) to form covalently bonded heterocyclic products. Theoretical calculations at the level [DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p)] indicate that the N2 addition reaction is exothermic for the singlet aryl cations but endothermic for their triplet spin isomers. The -OH and -NH2 substituted aryl ions are calculated to have triplet ground states, which is consistent with their decreased nitrogen addition reactivity. The energy needed for the generation of the aryl cations from their protonated precursors (ca. 340 kJ/mol starting with protonated aniline) is far less than that required to directly activate the nitrogen triple bond (the lowest energy excited state of N2 lies ca. 600 kJ/mol above the ground state). The formation of aza-aromatics via arene ionization and subsequent reactions provide a conceivable route to the genesis of nitrogen-containing organic molecules in the interstellar medium and Titan haze layers.

Characterization of the various petroleum constituents (hydronaphthalenes, thiophenes, alkyl substituted benzenes, pyridines, fluorenes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) was achieved under ambient conditions without sample preparation by desorption atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (DAPCI). Conditions were chosen for the DAPCI experiments to control whether ionization was by proton or electron transfer. The protonated molecule [M+H]+ and the hydride abstracted [MH]+ form were observed when using an inert gas, typically nitrogen, to direct a lightly ionized plasma generated by corona discharge onto the sample surface in air. The abundant water cluster ions generated in this experiment react with condensed-phase functionalized hydrocarbon model compounds and their mixtures at or near the sample surface. On the other hand, when naphthalene was doped into the DAPCI gas stream, its radical cation served as a charge exchange reagent, yielding molecular radical cations (M+ ) of the hydrocarbons. This mode of sample ionization provided mass spectra with better signal/noise ratios and without unwanted side-products. It also extended the applicability of DAPCI to petroleum constituents which could not be analyzed through proton transfer (e.g., higher molecular PAHs such as chrysene). The thermochemistry governing the individual ionization processes is discussed and a desorption/ionization mechanism is inferred.

The availability of clean water is of fundamental importance to human health and survival, as a habitat for aquatic species, for farming and industrial use. Water quality is likely the most important factor in maintaining the health in both farmed and wild fish. Understanding water quality is critically important in facilities which reuse a large percentage of system water. Heavy metals can have a major impact on aquatic health and have a tendency to accumulate in the food chain. In this study we describe a novel fluorescence sensor for the detection of heavy metal ions in water. Fluorophores immobilized in a polymer membrane were excited using an array of LEDs and the fluorescent emission measured via a CCD camera. This novel portable device is comprised of a 3×3 array of sensing elements across which the water sample is pumped and the fluorescence image generated is used to determine the metal ion content. Herein we demonstrate this approach for the detection of Cu (II) ions in water.

Metaldehyde is extensively used worldwide as a contact and systemic molluscicide for controlling slugs and snails in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. Contamination of surface waters due to run-off, coupled with its moderate solubility in water, has led to increased concentration of the pesticide in the environment. In this study, for the first time, rapid analysis (0.99, without any pre-concentration/separation steps. This result is of particular importance for environmental monitoring and water quality analysis providing a potential means of rapid screening to ensure safe drinking water.

This paper details the development of a handheld battery operated ambient ionization source that when coupled to a mass spectrometer is capable of in-situ, solid phase chemical analysis. There exists a plethora of proven techniques for ionizing liquid and gas phase analytes for mass analysis but due to a lack of volatility, solid phase analytes can be difficult to ionize and introduce directly from a surface to a mass spectrometer. Various ambient technologies have been developed for this purpose such as low temperature plasma (LTP), desorption electrospray ionisation (DESI) and direct analysis in real time (DART), but each of these technologies has associated drawbacks for miniaturization. The ionization device described weighs less than 600 g, can be operated for 6 hours continuously from battery power, requires no other inputs or sample preparation and has a touch screen interface for improved ease of use for non-specialist operators. This paper details the design considerations in its development as well as testing and procedures for integration with a mass spectrometer for chemical sensing.

A physical model of electromagnetic induction is developed which relates directly the forces between electrons in the transmitter and receiver windings of concentric coaxial finite coils in the near-field region. By applying the principle of superposition, the contributions from accelerating electrons in successive current loops are summed, allowing the peak-induced voltage in the receiver to be accurately predicted. Results show good agreement between theory and experiment for various receivers of different radii up to five times that of the transmitter. The limitations of the linear theory of electromagnetic induction are discussed in terms of the non-uniform current distribution caused by the skin effect. In particular, the explanation in terms of electromagnetic energy and Poynting’s theorem is contrasted with a more direct explanation based on variable filament induction across the conductor cross section. As the direct physical model developed herein deals only with forces between discrete current elements, it can be readily adapted to suit different coil geometries and is widely applicable in various fields of research such as near-field communications, antenna design, wireless power transfer, sensor applications and beyond.

A key requirement of electrospray ionization (ESI) and other techniques facilitating ionization at elevated pressures is the efficient transport of free gas-phase ions into the high vacuum region of the mass spectrometer. Radio frequency (RE) multipole ion guides that allow for collisional cooling are one of the most popular means of achieving this. However, their performance is highly dependent on several experimental factors, including pressure and various electrode potentials along the ion path. To experimentally visualize these effects, we have employed a position-sensitive detector at the exit of a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) instrument operated in RF only mode that employs an RE only octopole as a collisional cooling ion guide. This allows the spatial distribution of the ions, and its,dependence on experimentally determined conditions, to be directly visualized at the exit of the quadrupole. This investigation provides a detailed insight into the ion dynamics occurring inside multipole ion guides. This knowledge can directly be applied to instrument development and to improve the ion transmission efficiency and, thus, sensitivity: Numerical simulations Using custom-developed trajectory simulation software are compared and contrasted with the :experimental observations.

Desorption atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (DAPCI) is implemented on a portable mass spectrometer and applied to the direct detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkyl substituted benzenes. The presence of these compounds in the environment poses a significant threat to the health of both humans and wildlife because of their carcinogenic, toxic, and mutagenic properties. As such, instant detection outside of the laboratory is of particular importance to allow in-situ measurement at the source. Using a rapid, high throughput, miniature, handheld mass spectrometer, several alkyl substituted benzenes and PAHs (i.e., 1,2,3,5-tetramethylbenzene, pentamethylbenzene, hexamethylbenzene, fluoranthene, anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, acenaphthene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene, 9-ethylfluorene, and 1-benzyl-3-methyl-naphthalene) were identified and characterized using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) from ambient surfaces, in the open air. This method can provide almost instantaneous information while minimizing sample preparation, which is advantageous in terms of both cost and simplicity of analysis. This MS-based technique is applicable to a wide range of environmental organic molecules.

Paper spray (PS) ambient ionization is implemented using a portable mass spectrometer and applied to the detection of alkyl quaternary ammonium salts in a complex oil matrix. These salts are commonly used as active components in the formulation of corrosion inhibitors. They were identified in oil and confirmed by their fragmentation patterns recorded using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The cations of alkyl and benzyl-substituted quaternary ammonium salts showed characteristic neutral losses of CnH2n (n carbon number of the longest chain) and C7H8, respectively. Individual quaternary ammonium compounds were detected at low concentrations (1 ng μL(-1)) and over a dynamic range of ∼5 pg μL(-1) to 500 pg μL(-1) (ppb). Direct detection of these compounds in complex oil samples without prior sample preparation or pre-concentration was also demonstrated using a home-built miniature mass spectrometer at levels below 1 ng μL(-1).
