Passive open-top devices have been proposed as a method to experimentally increase temperature in high-latitude ecosystems. There is, however, little documentation on the efficacy of these devices. This paper examines the performance of four open-top chambers for altering temperature at six sites in the Arctic and Antarctica. Most of the heating effect was due to daytime warming above ambient; occasional night-time cooling below ambient, especially of air temperatures, depressed mean daily temperature. The mean daily temperatures at four arctic sites were generally increased by 1.2--1.8 deg.C; but occasionally, temperature depressions also occurred. Under optimal conditions at theantarctic site (dry soils, no vegetation, high radiation) mean dailysoil temperatures were increased by + 2.2 deg.C (-10 cm) to + 5.2 deg.C (0 cm). Protection from wind may play a more important role than temperature per se in providing a favourable environment for plant growth within opentop devices. Wind speed had a generally negative impact on mean daily temperature. Daily global radiation was both positively and negatively related to chamber temperature response. The effect of chambers on snow accumulation was variable with the Alexandra Fjord site showing an increased accumulation in chambers but no difference in the date of snowmelt, while at Latnjajaure in a deep snowfall site, snowmelt occurred 1--2 weeks earlier in chambers, potentially increasing the growing season. Selection of a passive temperature-enhancing system requires balancing the temperature enhancement desired against potential unwanted ecological effects such as chamber overheating and altered light, moisture, and wind. In general, the more closed the temperature-enhancing system, the higher is the temperature enhancement, but the larger are the unwanted ecological effects. Plant and soil nematodes significandy impact our lives. Therefore, we must understand and manage these complex organisms so that we may continue to develop and sustain our food production systems, our natural resources, our environment, and our quality of life. This publication looks specifically at soil and plant nematology. First, the societal impact of nematodes and benefits of nematology research are briefly presented. Next, the opportunities facing nematology in the next decade are outlined, as well as the resources needed to address these priorities. The safety and sustainability of U.S. food and fiber production depends on public and administrative understanding of the importance of nematodes, the drastic effects of nematodes on many agricultural and horticultural crops, and the current research priorities of nematology.

Because research on nematode involvement in trophic interactions, foodweb structure, and biodiversity is constrained by lack of an overview of nematode feeding habits, this outline presents a consensus of current thought on nematode feeding habits. The source of food is fundamental to trophic interactions and provides the basis for our definitions of the essential feeding types: 1) plant feeder, 2) hyphal feeder, 3) bacterial feeder, 4) substrate ingester, 5) predator of animals, 6) unicellular eucaryote feeder, 7) dispersal or infective stage of parasites, and 8) omnivore. Lists of families and genera with their presumed feeding types are given. Major gaps in knowledge of feeding in the smaller tylenchids and many dorylaims are noted.

Anhydrobiotic nematodes were fixed and extracted from dry Mojave desert soils with hot and cold fixatives (5% formalin and 4% gluteraldehyde). Morphologically, extracted nematodes were tightly coiled and shrunken in size. Various concentrations of KCl, ethylene glycol, and sucrose solutions were compared for their effectiveness in extracting viable nematodes still in the anhydrobiotic state. Approximately 80-95% of the anhydrobiotic nematodes extracted with 1.25 M and 1.5 M sucrose were tightly coiled and shrunken in a manner similar to those fixed and extracted in formalin. Anhydrobiotic nematodes can be maintained in this form for up to 24 days in 1.25 M sucrose solution and still be revived. All molarities of ethylene glycol and KC1 tested were ineffective in recovering and maintaining nematodes in the natural anhydrobiotic state. Straight, air-dried, and active nematodes served as controls and did not coil when placed in hot or cold fixatives or in any concentration of KCI, ethylene glycol, or sucrose. Anhydrobiosis, as represented by the coiled form of nematodes from desert soils, was not confined to any particular life stage or trophic group.

Nematodes of three genera (Acrobeloides sp., Aphelenchus avenae, and Scutellonema brachyurum) were induced to coil and enter anhydrobiosis in drying soil of two types: sandy loam and loamy sand. Coiling was studied in relationship to soil moisture characteristics. Coiling and the physiological state of anhydrobiosis occurred before the water in sandy soils reached a water potential of -15 bars. Coiling was maximum at 3-6 bars, depending on the soil type and nematode species. It appeared that induction of coiling and anhydrohiosis were determined by the physical forces exerted by the water film surrounding the nematode, which, for these three species, was 6-9 monomolecular layers of water, rather than the % moisture and relative humidity of the soil per se.

The effect of methyl bromide (MB) was tested on active and anhydrobiotic Aphelenchus avenae. A. avenae was induced into anhydrobiosis by three different techniques. Both active and anhydrobiotic nematodes were subjected to 3,000 mu1 MB/liter air for 14 periods from 0 to 82 h. Anhydrobiotic nematodes were more resistant to fumigation than active nematodes, regardless of the technique used to induce anhydrobiosis. The percent survival decreased with increasing MB exposures (mu1 MB x h). For an LD of 45,000-54,000 mu1/1 x h were required for active nematodes and >279,000 mu1/1 x h for anhydrobiotic nematodes.

The sugar-flotation-sieving (SFS) and Baermann-funnel (BF) methods were compared for nematode extraction efficiency. The SFS method recovered nematodes from more trophic groups whereas greater total numbers of individuals were recovered by BF. In a test to validate the efficiency of SFS, virtually 100% of the nematodes added to desert soil prior to extraction were recovered by four consecutive SFS washings of each soil sample. Estimations of nematode biomass in desert soils based on numbers of nematodes extracted by the two methods were similar unless there was large reserve of eggs in the soil. The biomass of nematodes from a Colorado desert soil was 0.9 g/m(2) as determined by both methods, whereas BF gave 0.17 g/m(2) for nematodes from a Mojave desert soil as compared to 0.9 g/m(2) with SFS.

Penetration of 3-day-old 'Kenland' red clover seedlings by Heterodera trifolii Goffart and Pratylenchus penetrans (Cobb) was investigated in 50-mm petri dishes on 1% agat or discs of Miracloth(R) (Chicopee Mills, Inc., New York, N.Y. 10018). Penetration by both nematodes increased arithmetically with increased numbers in the inoculum. H. trifolii larvae slowly penetrated all root tissue but in relatively low numbers, 25-30% of inocula. Swelling of larvae and formation of syncytia within roots was detectable 96 hr after inoculation. Initially, adults of P. penetrans preferentially penetrated the region 3-10 mm behind the root tip, but subsequently they invaded all along roots. P. penetrans penetration efficiency was high, 75-90% of inocula, and penetration was relatively rapid. When introduced simultaneously neither nematode affected the invasiveness of the other. Prior infection by H. trifolii did not affect the invasiveness of P. penetrans.
