Abstract: International audience; We present an optoelectronic THz mixer based on irondoped InGaAs integrated into a plasmonic microcavity. The measured conversion loss is as low as ∼30 dB at 300 GHz, which constitutes a 30 dB improvement in comparison to state-of-the-art photoconductors without a plasmonic microcavity. In particular for application as receivers in high-data rate wireless telecom the presented design is very promising.

Abstract: International audience; The increasing demand for high-capacity wireless communication requires data links at millimeter waves and terahertz frequencies, respectively. At those frequencies, electronic and photonic technologies compete to prove powerful transmitters and receivers. In this work, we demonstrate a wireless link at 300 GHz using a fiber-coupled PIN photodiode as the transmitter. Thus, the whole emitter side is based on components and techniques from standard fiber-optical communication, which inherently enable broadband data channels. We investigated two antenna designs with amplitude modulated and coherent data signals. Despite similar characteristics in terms of output power and carrier bandwidth, the quality of the data signals differed significantly. In addition, we found that the bit-error ratio (BER) scales non-monotonically with the optical input power of the photodiode, which is proportional to the terahertz output power. Depending on the modulation format and the symbol rate, we identified the optimal driving conditions of the photodiode. For amplitude modulation at 5 Gbit/s, we achieved error-free transmission with a BER of 7.510-13. QPSK modulation was error-free up to 64 Gbit/s. The highest line rate of 160 Gbit/s was achieved with 32QAM modulation. This corresponds to 133 Gbit/s net data rate after forward-error correction with 20% overhead. The highest spectral efficiency was achieved with 64QAM at 8 GBaud, i.e. 48 Gbit/s line rate. The presented results highlight the high bandwidth of photonic wireless THz links. Furthermore, the carefully analysis helps to improve the quality of future wireless links in the 300 GHz band.

Abstract: International audience; We present a concept for networked optical wireless communications, also denoted as LiFi, to meet the requirements of industrial wireless applications. These are primarily mobility support with moderate data rates per device, reliable real-time communication, and integrated positioning. We describe a distributed multiuser multiple-input multiple-output architecture, serving mobile devices via an optical wireless infrastructure. The system consists of a central unit, being connected to a number of distributed optical frontends covering a larger area. Our main contribution is a medium access control protocol based on space division multiple access. Evaluation results demonstrate the advantages of joint transmission from adjacent optical frontends and the dynamic switching between spatial diversity and multiplexing. The relevance of spatial multiplexing becomes obvious through channel measurements in an indoor scenario. Moreover, we highlight a low-power physical layer based on on-off-keying for battery-powered mobile devices. Our architecture can easily integrate positioning by simultaneously measuring the time-of-flight between multiple optical frontends and the mobile device. We highlight the use of plastic optical fiber as an analog fronthaul technology and discuss the integration with other networks. The main functions described in this paper will be supported by the upcoming IEEE Std 802.15.13.

Abstract: International audience; LiFi has been considered as a promising candidate for future wireless indoor networks. The IEEE P802.15.13 and P802.11bb standardization groups agreed upon channel models generated using the non-sequential ray tracing approach of OpticStudio. In this paper, in order to validate the channel modelling approach, at first 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel measurements are carried out over 200 MHz bandwidth using a channel sounder. The experimental scenario is also modeled in 3D by applying ray tracing. The obtained results indicate good agreement between simulations and measured channel impulse responses, from which parameters such as path loss and delay spread are derived. After validating the channel modeling approach, we investigate the singular values and the effect of user mobility onto the performance in a 4 × 4 distributed multiuser MIMO scenario.

Abstract: International audience; This paper reports the first results of the 5G-ALLSTAR project [1] aiming at providing solutions and enablers for spectrum sharing in a 5G cellular and satellite multi-connectivity context. First, we present an exhaustive study of the frequency bands eligible for these systems in the short and medium term. A ray-tracing based and a geometry-based stochastic channel models developed in the project are then described. These models can be used to simulate systems involving terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. We then describe three different ways investigated in the project for managing interference: signal processing (hardware implementation of a 5G New Radio compatible physical layer), beamforming (steering and switching beams in order to avoid the interference while preserving the spectral efficiency) and radio resource management (tool designed for joint optimization of satellite and terrestrial resource sharing).

Abstract: International audience; Previous researches on optical wireless communication (OWC) focused mainly on increasing the data rate for mobile broadband delivery. However, for new applications such as industrial wireless, reliability and robustness against interference play a crucial role. This paper focuses on the design , characterization, and real-world testing of novel solutions for OWC taking industrial requirements into account. Recent experimental works have demonstrated the feasibility of reliable OWC in a manufacturing environment. Here we propose to implement networked OWC which is also known as Li-Fi by means of a distributed MIMO approach enabling ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) which is an important use case for 5G and beyond mobile networks. For distributing the MIMO signals, plastic optic fiber (POF) is a promising low-cost solution offering high data rates, easy deployment and inherent robustness against electromagnetic interference. As POF may become a main component for Li-Fi using distributed MIMO, commercially available POF solutions are studied and their usability for this new application to distribute signal between central unit and multiple frontends is discussed.

Abstract: Functional plasticity of the adult brain is well established. Recently, the structural counterpart to such plasticity has been suggested by neuroimaging studies showing experience-dependent differences in gray matter (GM) volumes. Within the primary and secondary olfactory cortices, reduced GM volumes have been demonstrated in patients with olfactory loss. However, these cross-sectional studies do not provide causal evidence for GM volume change, and thereby structural plasticity. Disorders of the peripheral olfactory system, such as chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), provide an ideal model to study GM structural plasticity, given that patients may experience long periods of olfactory impairment, followed by near complete recovery with treatment. We therefore performed a prospective longitudinal study in patients undergoing surgical treatment for CRS. We used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to investigate GM volume change in 12 patients (M:F = 7:5; 47.2 ± 14.9 years), 3 months post-op. Abstract: Article, Schizophrenia is a devastating psychiatric illness with high heritability. Brain structure and function differ, on average, between people with schizophrenia and healthy individuals. As common genetic associations are emerging for both schizophrenia and brain imaging phenotypes, we can now use genome-wide data to investigate genetic overlap. Here we integrated results from common variant studies of schizophrenia (33,636 cases, 43,008 controls) and volumes of several (mainly subcortical) brain structures (11,840 subjects). We did not find evidence of genetic overlap between schizophrenia risk and subcortical volume measures either at the level of common variant genetic architecture or for single genetic markers. Abstract: International audience; Wireless body area networks (WBANs), connecting a number of sensors placed around and inside the human body, are a promising technology in medical applications by improving healthcare services through, for example, patient monitoring and remote control of medical devices. Radiofrequency-based WBANs suffer from several drawbacks including the risk of electromagnetic interference, the specific absorption rate limitations near the body surface, as well as data security (i.e. vulnerability to eavesdropping), and multipath propagation. To overcome these limitations, visible light communications (VLC) have emerged as a viable alternative for wireless data exchange between WBAN nodes. In this thesis, realistic indoor VLC channel modeling and characterization of in-and on-body WBAN links will be performed. The effects of body configuration, its position inside the room, and the placement of sensors will be taken into account as well. Also, we will work on the development of optimal multiple access (MA) techniques and efficient physical and upper-layer signaling schemes for interconnecting medical sensors, while satisfying the requirements of user mobility, low energy consumption, and low implementation complexity. Furthermore, we will propose efficient solutions for time synchronization and MA interference management. Experimental verification of the developed VLC-based network will be done at the last stages of the thesis.

Abstract: International audience; We experimentally investigate Kerr nonlinearity mitigation of a 28-GBd polarization-multiplexed 16-QAM signal in a 5-channel 50-GHz spaced wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) employing the mid-link spectral inversion technique is implemented by using a dual-pump polarization-independent fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) and compared to digital backpropagation (DBP) compensation over up to 800-km in a dispersion-managed link. In the single-channel case, the use of the DBP algorithm outperformed the OPC with a Q-factor improvement of 0.9 dB after 800-km transmission. However, signal transmission was not possible with DBP in the WDM scenario over the same link length while it was enabled by the OPC with a maximum Q-factor of 8.6 dB.

Abstract: Dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and a P2Y 12 inhibitor is the treatment of choice for the prevention of atherothrombotic events in patients with acute coronary syndromes and for those undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions. The availability of different oral P2Y 12 inhibitors (clopidogrel, prasugrel, ticagrelor) has enabled physicians to contemplate switching among therapies because of specific clinical scenarios. The recent introduction of an intravenous P2Y 12 inhibitor (cangrelor) further adds to the multitude of modalities and settings in which switching therapies may occur. In clinical practice, it is not uncommon to switch P2Y 12 inhibitor, and switching may be attributed to a variety of factors. However, concerns about the safety of switching between these agents have emerged. Practice guidelines have not fully elaborated on how to switch therapies, leaving clinicians with limited guidance on when and how to switch therapies when needed. This prompted the development of this expert consensus document by key leaders from North America and Europe with expertise in basic, translational, and clinical sciences in the field of antiplatelet therapy. This expert consensus provides an overview of the pharmacology of P2Y 12 inhibitors, different modalities and definitions of switching, and available literature and recommendations for switching between P2Y 12 inhibitors.

Abstract: The physical processes driving the chemical evolution of galaxies in the last $\sim 11\, \rm{Gyr}$ cannot be understood without directly probing the dust-obscured phase of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei. This phase, hidden to optical tracers, represents the bulk of star formation and black hole accretion activity in galaxies at $1 < z < 3$. Spectroscopic observations with a cryogenic infrared (IR) observatory like SPICA will be sensitive enough to peer through the dust-obscured regions of galaxies and access the rest-frame mid- to far-IR range in galaxies at high-$z$. This wavelength range contains a unique suite of spectral lines and dust features that serve as proxies for the abundances of heavy elements and the dust composition, providing tracers with a feeble response to both extinction and temperature. In this work, we investigate how SPICA observations could be exploited to understand key aspects in the chemical evolution of galaxies: the assembly of nearby galaxies based on the spatial distribution of heavy element abundances, the global content of metals in galaxies reaching the knee of the luminosity function up to $z \sim 3$, and the dust composition of galaxies at high-$z$. Abstract: A simple technique to estimate the time difference of arrival (TDOA) that necessitates only one reference device to perform 1-D positioning of a mobile device is presented. Using a multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system, this interferometric technique uses ultrawideband signals and is particularly well suited for 60-GHz orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communications. The accuracy of the technique is assessed by simulation, using the IEEE 802.11ad channel, as well as by measurement.

Abstract: International audience; 3DTV technology has brought out new challenges such as the question of synthesized view evaluation. Synthesized views are generated through a depth image-based rendering (DIBR) process. This process induces new types of artifacts whose impact on visual quality has to be identified considering various contexts of use. While visual quality assessment has been the subject of many studies in the last twenty years, there are still some unanswered questions regarding new technological improvement. DIBR brings new challenges mainly because it deals with geometric distortions. This paper considers the DIBR-based synthesized view evaluation problem. Different experiments have been carried out. They question the protocols of subjective assessment and the reliability of the objective quality metrics in the context of 3DTV, in these specific conditions (DIBR-based synthesized views). They consist in assessing seven different view synthesis algorithms through subjective and objective measurements. Results show that usual metrics are not sufficient for assessing 3-D synthesized views, since they do not correctly render human judgment. Synthesized views contain specific artifacts located around the disoccluded areas, but usual metrics seem to be unable to express the degree of annoyance perceived in the whole image. The study provides hints for a new objective measure. Two approaches are proposed: the first one is based on the analysis of the shifts of the contours of the synthesized view; the second one is based on the computation of a mean SSIM score of the disoccluded areas.

Abstract: International audience; Color is a powerful visual property and is used to make interferences about the world. However, no theoretical framework is available that explains precisely where color associations come from and how they affect psychological functioning, making it difficult to predict how color affects human-computer interaction. This paper aims at closing this gap by suggesting an Embodied Cognition view on color, which assumes that the aggregate of our perceptual color experiences is part of the mental representation of tactile object attributes and thus systematically influences our abstract thinking via the process of metaphorical mapping. An empirical study is presented in which hues and saturation of objects were manipulated via Augmented Reality. Participants matched objects to abstract concepts, e.g., happiness. 83 % of the participants’ choices were correctly predicted, suggesting that color information is considered during the processing of abstract information. Eight color-to-abstract-concept mappings are recommended and possible areas of application are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; As 4G wireless networks are vastly and rapidly deployed worldwide, 5G with its advanced vision of all connected world and zero distance communications is already at the corner. Along with the super quality of user experience brought by these new networks, the shockingly increasing energy consumption of wireless networks has become a worrying economic issue for operators and a big challenge for sustainable development. Green Transmission Technologies (GTT) is a project focusing on the energy-efficient design of physical-layer transmission technologies and MAC-layer radio resource management in wireless networks. In particular, fundamental tradeoffs between spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency have been identified and explored for energy-efficiency-oriented design and optimization. In this article, four selected GTT solutions are introduced, focusing on how they utilize the degrees of freedom in different resource domains, as well as how they balance the tradeoff between energy and spectrum efficiency. On top of the elaboration of separated solutions, the GTT toolbox is introduced as a systematic tool and unified simulation platform to integrate the proposed GTT solutions together.

Abstract: International audience; We present experimental and numerical investigations of Kerr nonlinearity compensation in a 400-km standard single-mode fiber link with distributed Raman amplification with backward pumping. A dual-pump polarization-independent fiber-based optical parametric amplifier is used for mid-link spectral inversion of 5 × 28-GBd polarization-multiplexed 16-QAM signals. Signal quality factor (Q-factor) improvements of 1.1 dB and 0.8 dB were obtained in the cases of a single-channel and a five-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system, respectively. The experimental results are compared to numerical simulations with good agreement. It is also shown with simulations that a maximum transmission reach of 2400 km enabled by the optical phase conjugator is possible for the WDM signal.

Abstract: International audience; This paper describes the aims and concepts of the FP7 RE@CT project. Building upon the latest advances in 3D capture and free-viewpoint video RE@CT aims to revolutionise the production of realistic characters and significantly reduce costs by developing an automated process to extract and represent animated characters from actor performance capture in a multiple camera studio. The key innovation is the development of methods for analysis and representation of 3D video to allow reuse for real-time interactive animation. This will enable efficient authoring of interactive characters with video quality appearance and motion.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the problem of evaluating virtual view synthesized images in the multi-view video context. As a matter of fact, view synthesis brings new types of distortion. The question refers to the ability of the traditional used objective metrics to assess synthesized views quality, considering the new types of artifacts. The experiments conducted to determine their reliability consist in assessing seven different view synthesis algorithms. Subjective and objective measurements have been performed. Results show that the most commonly used objective metrics can be far from human judgment depending on the artifact to deal with.

Abstract: International audience; This paper considers the reliability of usual assessment methods when evaluating virtual synthesized views in the multi-view video context. Virtual views are generated from Depth Image Based Rendering (DIBR) algorithms. Because DIBR algorithms involve geometric transformations, new types of artifacts come up. The question regards the ability of commonly used methods to deal with such artifacts. This paper investigates how correlated usual metrics are to human judgment. The experiments consist in assessing seven different view synthesis algorithms by subjective and objective methods. Three different 3D video sequences are used in the tests. Resulting virtual synthesized sequences are assessed through objective metrics and subjective protocols. Results show that usual objective metrics can fail assessing synthesized views, in the sense of human judgment.

Abstract: This work considers a single-cell random access channel (RACH) in cellular wireless networks. Communications over RACH take place when users try to connect to a base station during a handover or when establishing a new connection. Within the framework of Self-Organizing Networks (SONs), the system should self- adapt to dynamically changing environments (channel fading, mobility, etc.) without human intervention. For the performance improvement of the RACH procedure, we aim here at maximizing throughput or alternatively minimizing the user dropping rate. In the context of SON, we propose protocols which exploit information from measurements and user reports in order to estimate current values of the system unknowns and broadcast global action-related values to all users. The protocols suggest an optimal pair of user actions (transmission power and back-off probability) found by minimizing the drift of a certain function. Numerical results illustrate considerable benefits of the dropping rate, at a very low or even zero cost in power expenditure and delay, as well as the fast adaptability of the protocols to environment changes. Although the proposed protocol is designed to minimize primarily the amount of discarded users per cell, our framework allows for other variations (power or delay minimization) as well., 31 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: Feature Topic on Advances in IEEE Standards and Testbeds for Cognitive Radio Networks; International audience; This article details the current work status of the ETSI Reconfigurable Radio Systems Techni- cal Committee, positions the ETSI work with respect to other standards efforts (IEEE 802, IEEE SCC41) as well as the European Regula- tory Framework, and gives an outlook on the future evolution. In particular, software defined radio related study results are presented with a focus on SDR architectures for mobile devices such as mobile phones. For MDs, a novel archi- tecture and inherent interfaces are presented enabling the usage of SDR principles in a mass market context. Cognitive radio principles within ETSI RRS are concentrated on two topics, a cognitive pilot channel proposal and a Function- al Architecture for Management and control of reconfigurable radio systems, including dynamic self-organizing planning and management, dynamic spectrum management, joint radio resource management. Finally, study results are indicated that are targeting a SDR/CR security framework.

Abstract: Scheduling and Resource Allocation; International audience; Interference reduction, cooperation and the performance of cell-edge users are important issues in next generation cellular systems. Based on previous works for single-input singleoutput (SISO) systems, we propose a novel interference reducing self-organizing coordination scheme for a multi antenna OFDM system with space division multiple access (SDMA). The proposed Virtual Subband Algorithm (VSA) tries to maximize the overall network utility by adjusting transmit powers on a per beam granularity and leads to a soft fractional frequency reuse. It uses only small additional information exchange between sectors and infrequent additional long-term feedback. Although reducing interference, VSA follows a completely new approach by having all beams switched-on all the time. Simulations show that in static settings compared to a non-cooperative, highly opportunistic, greedy scheduling scheme, VSA achieves significant gains both in the performance of cell-edge users and in the overall system performance, defined in this paper as the geometric average of user throughputs. Moreover it is shown that cell-edge users benefit even in fast-fading cases, although a gain in system-wide performance cannot be guaranteed.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a new compression technique for 3D dynamic meshes, referred to as FAMC - Frame-based Animated Mesh Compression, recently promoted within the MPEG-4 standard as Amendement 2 of part 16 (AFX - Animation Framework eXtension). The FAMC approach combines a model-based motion-compensation strategy with transform/predictive coding of residual errors. First, a skinning motion-compensation model is automatically derived from a frame-based representation. Subsequently, either 1) DCT/lifting wavelets or 2) layer-based predictive coding is employed to exploit remaining spatio-temporal correlations in the residual signal. Both motion model parameters and residual signal components are finally encoded by using context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC). The proposed FAMC encoder offers high compression performance with gains of 60% in terms of bit-rate savings relative to previous MPEG-4 technology and of 20% to 40% relative to state-of-the-art techniques. FAMC is well suited for compressing both geometric and photometric (normal vectors, colors...) attributes. Abstract: International audience; In the current work the conceptual framework of optimally stopping a stochastic process is used to determine the optimal maximum number of retransmissions in an ARQ chain. The process sequentially observed is the binary ARQ feedback after each packet (re)transmission (ACK/NAK). A reward-cost process Y_C n is constructed as a function of the observed sequence up to time n with a certain reward and cost per trial as well as a final penalty in case the retransmission process is finalised before correct packet reception. Two problems are investigated, namely the cases without and with cost. In the ARQ stopping problem without cost ergodicity conditions of the ARQ Markov chain are stated and proved. These guarantee with probability one finite waiting times until the first ACK is received. The solution of the ARQ stopping problem with cost provides an explicit expression for the optimal truncation time of ARQ protocols as a function of the costs and rewards and suggests a tradeoff between delay and dropping probability. Conditions for cases when the ARQ chain should not be truncated as well as when no retransmissions should be allowed at all are presented. The stopping rule is applied to practical ARQ scenarios where the behavior of the truncation time with respect to different supported rate, delay and dropping is investigated.

Abstract: International audience; A device concept for laterally extracting selected wavelengths from an optical signal traveling along a waveguide, for operation in metropolitan area networks, is presented. The signal on the fundamental mode of a multimode photonic crystal waveguide is coupled to a higher-order mode, at a center frequency that spatially depends on the slowly varying guide parameters. The device is compact, intrinsically fault tolerant, and can split any desired fraction of the signal for monitoring purpose. Characterizations by the internal light source technique validate the optical concept whereas an integrated device with four photodiodes qualifies its potential with respect to real-world applications.
