Abstract: Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure. 9. Growth response and metals uptake of native bunchgrasses during organic amendment-assisted phytostabilization of alkaline mine tailings

Abstract: Tailings management is one of several challenges faced by mines operating in dry environments. If tailings are exposed, with no vegetative cover, dust from mine sites can spread over long distances through eolian dispersion and water erosion, posing a risk to human and environmental health. Phytostabilization is a remediation technique which involves promoting vegetation growth on mine sites in order to prevent erosion and stabilize metals belowground. Here we report the results of a greenhouse study in which two native bunchgrasses (bluebunch wheatgrass and rough fescue) were evaluated for their ability to grow on alkaline mine tailings from the historic Afton mine when amended with a range of concentrations of locally available soil amendments (compost and wood ash). The addition of compost lowered tailings pH and increased organic matter content. A positive correlation between compost concentration and total biomass was observed, likely due to improved soil conditions. Shoot and root biomass of bluebunch wheatgrass was significantly greater than that of rough fescue on all treatments. Both candidates minimized shoot accumulation of metals with the exception of Mo which exceeded the domestic animal toxicity limit. The results revealed that compost is a promising amendment for promoting bunchgrass growth on these tailings.

Poyang Lake, located in the middle reaches of Yangtze River (central China), constitutes the largest freshwater lake of the country. It harbours high biodiversity and provides important habitat for local wildlife. A dam that will maintain the water capacity in Poyang Lake is currently being planned. However, the local biodiversity and the likely effects of this dam on the biodiversity (especially on the endemic and rare plants) have not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, in order to assess the richness of plant species and plant communities in Poyang Lake, we conducted a detailed field investigation combined with a literature review. A total of 124 families, 339 genera, and 512 species (including sub-species, varieties and forms) as well as eight dominant plant communities were identified, confirming the lake’s wetland as a regional hotspot of plant diversity. It is imperative to carry out further research on the impact of damming on the vegetation, particularly research focusing on protecting local biodiversity, maintaining the lake’s ecosystem services, controlling the spread of invasive species, and restoring degraded ecosystems., [ES]El estudio de la riqueza y la composición de especies vegetales de un humedal es esencial a la hora de estimar su importancia ecológica y sus servicios ecosistémicos, especialmente cuando éste está sujeto a perturbaciones humanas. El lago Poyang, situado en el curso medio del río Yangtsé (China central) constituye la mayor superfície de agua dulce del país. Alberga una elevada biodiversidad y proporciona hábitats importantes para la flora y fauna locales. En la actualidad existen planes de construir una presa que mantendrá el volumen de agua del lago estable. Sin embargo, y hasta la fecha, apenas existen estudios que hayan abordado la biodiversidad del lago y los posibles efectos negativos de la presa sobre ésta (y en especial sobre las especies endémicas y raras). Así pues, se ha llevado a cabo una intensa campaña de campo combinada con una búsqueda bibliográfica con el objetivo de evaluar la riqueza de especies y comunidades vegetales del lago Poyang y sus humedales asociados. It harbours high biodiversity and provides important habitat for local wildlife. A dam that will maintain the water capacity in Poyang Lake is currently being planned. However, the local biodiversity and the likely effects of this dam on the biodiversity (especially on the endemic and rare plants) have not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, in order to assess the richness of plant species and plant communities in Poyang Lake, we conducted a detailed field investigation combined with a literature review. A total of 124 families, 339 genera, and 512 species (including sub-species, varieties and forms) as well as eight dominant plant communities were identified, confirming the lake’s wetland as a regional hotspot of plant diversity. It is imperative to carry out further research on the impact of damming on the vegetation, particularly research focusing on protecting local biodiversity, maintaining the lake’s ecosystem services, controlling the spread of invasive species, and restoring degraded ecosystems., [ES]El estudio de la riqueza y la composición de especies vegetales de un humedal es esencial a la hora de estimar su importancia ecológica y sus servicios ecosistémicos, especialmente cuando éste está sujeto a perturbaciones humanas. El lago Poyang, situado en el curso medio del río Yangtsé (China central) constituye la mayor superfície de agua dulce del país. Alberga una elevada biodiversidad y proporciona hábitats importantes para la flora y fauna locales. En la actualidad existen planes de construir una presa que mantendrá el volumen de agua del lago estable. Sin embargo, y hasta la fecha, apenas existen estudios que hayan abordado la biodiversidad del lago y los posibles efectos negativos de la presa sobre ésta (y en especial sobre las especies endémicas y raras). Así pues, se ha llevado a cabo una intensa campaña de campo combinada con una búsqueda bibliográfica con el objetivo de evaluar la riqueza de especies y comunidades vegetales del lago Poyang y sus humedales asociados. Se han identificado un total de 124 familias, 339 géneros y 512 especies (incluyendo subespecies, variedades y formas) así como ocho comunidades vegetales dominantes, confirmándose así el papel de los humedales del lago Poyang como hotspot regional de biodiversidad. Resulta imperativo estudiar los efectos del represado sobre la vegetación, y, de manera especial, todo aquello concerniente a la protección de la biodiversidad local, el mantenimiento de los servicios ecosistémicos, el control de las especies invasoras y la restauración de los ecosistemas degradados.

20. Top-down vs bottom-up control influenced by productivity in a North Derbyshire, UK, dale

Abstract: Fretwell and Oksanen's theory of trophic dynamics was tested in two plant communities located in a North Derbyshire dale, including: (1) a low productivity calcareous grassland; and, (2) a highly productiveUrtica dioica (nettle) patch. Two methods (herbivore removal throughpesticide application, and transplanting established, intact turves (0.5 m2) between the two community types) were employed, and analysed in a two-way ANOVA, to test the hypothesis that highly productive communities are controlled by 'top-down' forces and low productivity communities are controlled by 'bottom- up' forces. The Fretwell-Oksanen theory proposes that herbivores limit growth in low productivity communities, not highly productive communities. Therefore, removal of herbivores will result in an increase in plant biomass only in the low productivity community. The results presented in this paper support the Fretwell-Oksanen hypothesis. Furthermore, when small turves were transplanted from the highly productive community to the low productivity community the removal of herbivores through pesticide application greatly increased the above-ground plant biomass. This result suggests, firstly that the vegetation grown in a highly productive environment is generally very palatable, and secondly, it strengthens the evidence that herbivores are limiting plant growth in low productivity communities but not highly productive communities. Individual plant species response to herbivore removal was related to known relative growth rate values using linear regression and was found to be significant in one case: nettle turves transplanted into the grassland. In this case, relative growth rate accounted for 68.3% of the variation in the response of the plants to herbivore removal. This suggests that fast-growing plants from a highly productive environment are most likely to respond to the release of a limiting factor, in thiscase herbivory, within a community. Abstract: Trophic interactions were investigated on herbaceous communities in a limestone dale in Northern England. Manipulative experiments involved the application of molluscicides and foliar and soil insecticides along natural productivity gradients. The results supported the theories of Fretwell and Oksanen in which trophic dynamics are predicted to be dependent upon primary productivity. Furthermore, the results extend the Fretwell-Oksanen model by the inclusion of invertebrates, and the applicability of the model to the small, individual habitat scale. At very low productivity, the vegetation was dominated by slow-growing, unpalatable species and did not experience a detectable amountof herbivory. In circumstances of high productivity, 'top-down' control of herbivores by carnivores appeared to protect the resident fast-growing and relatively palatable perennials from herbivory. Vegetation of intermediate productivity responded strongly to the removal of herbivores; here we conclude that herbivore pressure is high because productivity is insufficient to sustain a high intensity of 'top-down' control from carnivores. Abstract: Surprisingly little research has been published on the responses to elevated [CO2] at the community level, where herbivores can select their preferred food. We investigated the combined effects of atmospheric [CO2] and herbivory on synthesised plant communities growing on soils of different fertility. Factorial combinations of two [CO2] (350 or 700 l l−1), two fertility (fertilised or non-fertilised), and two herbivory (herbivores present or absent) treatments were applied to a standard mixture of seven fast- and eight slow-growing plants in outdoor microcosms. The herbivores used were the grain aphid ( Sitobion avenae) and the garden snail ( Helix aspersa). We measured plant biomass, foliar nitrogen and soluble tannin concentration, aphid fecundity, and snail growth, fecundity, and feeding preferences over one growing season. Elevated [CO2] did not have a significant impact on (1) the combined biomass of fast-growing or slow-growing plants, (2) herbivore feeding preferences, or (3) herbivore fitness. There was, however, a significant biomass increase of Carex flacca (which represented in all cases less than 5% of total live biomass), and some chemical changes in unpalatable plants under elevated [CO2]. The herbivory treatment significantly increased the biomass of slow-growing plants over fast-growing plants, whereas fertilisation significantly increased the abundance of fast-growing plants over slow-growing plants. Predictions on the effects of elevated [CO2] based on published single-species experiments were not supported by the results of this microcosm study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A number of recent and important developments in community ecology have been derived from experiments conducted in microcosms. Studies with microcosms have addressed a broad range of phenomena, including climate change, biodiversity, assembly rules, habitat restoration, trophic dynamics and mycorrhizal associations. The common factor linking these studies is that they manipulate an individual environmental axis and explore the role that axis plays in structuring communities. We discuss six recent studies to illustrate the use and design of microcosms for community ecology research.
