Abstract

One of the primary complications of cirrhosis and portal hypertension is the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is among the most common malignancies worldwide. There is limited availability of predictive non-invasive markers for primary HCC development in compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) patients. The reference standard method of assessing prognosis for cACLD patients, beyond liver fibrosis assessed by histology, is the measurement of the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG). HVPG ≥ 10 mmHg is associated with an increased risk of HCC in these patients. However, these methods are expensive and invasive and are available only at referral centers. In the last decade, several studies have focused on the evaluation of several, simple, non-invasive tests (NITs) as predictors of HCC development. Among these methods, attention has particularly been paid to the elastographic techniques for the assessment of liver and spleen stiffness. We have reviewed the current literature about vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE), magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), and other ultrasound-based elastographic techniques (e.g., SWE) in predicting primary HCC occurrence and recurrence. Despite promising results, the overall heterogeneity resulting from the variability in the populations analyzed, the differences in the elastographic techniques used, the design and methodological quality of the available studies, prevented us from drawing definite conclusions on the liver and spleen stiffness role for predicting HCC occurrence and recurrence in chronic liver disease patients.

Abstract

Empathic design is often described as a creative process that translates observations - typically of people and their behaviours into design ideas. Another similar and closely related expression is user centred design, which attempts to turn the attention away from an object or product towards its usefulness and usability. The central premise of empathic design is that the best-designed products and services result from understanding the needs of the people who will use them. User-centred designers engage actively with end-users to gather insights that drive design from the earliest stages of product and service development, right through the design process.[1] Our standard definitions and understanding of empathic design or user centred design are well recognised and widely practiced, particularly taught in design schools and in professional creative business. This paper extends and explores a deeper understanding of empathy within a systems thinking framework where the observer and subject are both components of empathic design. It proposes that empathy can be described as the bonds of connection with others (in its traditional interpretation), but also with an ecological, social and economic context.

Abstract

Intestinal ultrasound is a non-invasive, safe, and cost-effective technique to study the small and large intestines. In addition to conventional B-mode and color doppler imaging, new US tools have been developed in more recent years that provide auxiliary data on many GI conditions, improving the diagnosis and assessment of relevant outcomes. We have reviewed the more recent literature (from 2010 onwards) on auxiliary tools in bowel ultrasound such as elastography techniques, CEUS, SICUS, and the potential contribution by artificial intelligence (AI) to overcome current intestinal ultrasound limitations. For this scoping review, we performed an extensive literature search on PubMed and EMBASE to identify studies published until December 2023 and investigating the application of elastography techniques, CEUS, SICUS, and AI in the ultrasonographic assessment of the small and large intestines. Multiparametric intestinal ultrasound shows promising capabilities in Crohn’s disease, while less is known about the role in ulcerative colitis. Despite some evidence, the CEUS role as a point-of-care examination tool for rare conditions such as intestinal GvHD and ischemic small bowel disease seems promising, possibly avoiding the need to perform further cross-sectional imaging. The use of AI in intestinal ultrasound is still anecdotical and limited to acute appendicitis.

Abstract

\We present the sixth catalog of Kepler candidate planets based on nearly 4 years of high precision photometry. This catalog builds on the legacy of previous catalogs released by the Kepler project and includes 1493 new Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) of which 554 are planet candidates, and 131 of these candidates have best fit radii <1.5 R_earth. This brings the total number of KOIs and planet candidates to 7305 and 4173 respectively. We suspect that many of these new candidates at the low signal-to-noise limit may be false alarms created by instrumental noise, and discuss our efforts to identify such objects. We re-evaluate all previously published KOIs with orbital periods of >50 days to provide a consistently vetted sample that can be used to improve planet occurrence rate calculations. We discuss the performance of our planet detection algorithms, and the consistency of our vetting products. In the past year, the Multimission Archive at the Space Telescope Science Institute (MAST) has taken major steps in making MAST's holdings available using VO-defined protocols and standards, and in implementing VO-based tools. For example, MAST has implemented the Simple Cone Search protocol, and all MAST mission searches may be returned in the VOTable format, allowing other archives to use MAST data for their VO applications. We have made many of our popular High Level Science Products available through Simple Image Access Protocol (SIAP), and are implementing the VO Simple Spectral Access Protocol (SSAP). The cross correlation of VizieR catalogs with MAST missions is now possible, and illustrates the integration of VO services into MAST. The user can easily display the results from searches within MAST using the plotting tool VOPlot. MAST also participates in the NVO registry service. Abstract

We investigate the detectability of starburst signatures in the nuclear spectrum of Seyfert 2 galaxies by constructing spectral models in the wavelength range 3500-4100A, combining the spectrum of a bulge population (of age ~10Gyr) with that of younger stellar populations, spanning ages from ~3 Myr to 1 Gyr. We also construct models combining the bulge template with a power-law (PL) continuum, which is observed in some Seyfert 2's in polarized light, contributing with typically 10-40% of the flux at 4020A. We conclude that such continuum cannot be distinguished from that of a very young stellar population (age < 10 Myr), contributing with less than ~0.02% of the mass of the bulge. The models are compared with nuclear spectra - corresponding to a radius of 200-300 pc at the galaxy - of 20 Seyfert 2 galaxies, in which we specifically look for the signatures above of young to intermediate age stellar populations. We find them in ten galaxies, thus 50% of the sample. But only in six cases (30% of the sample) they can be attributed to young stars (age < 500 Myr): Mrk 1210, ESO 362-G8, NGC 5135, NGC 5643, NGC 7130 and NGC 7582. In the remaining four cases, the signatures are due to intermediate age stars (~1 Gyr). We find a tendency for the young stars to be found more frequently among the late type Seyfert's. This tendency is supported by a comparison between the equivalent widths (W) of absorption lines of the nuclear spectra of the Seyfert 2's with those of normal galaxies of the same Hubble type., Comment: 18 figures, revised version published in ApJ, December 2000, vol. 544, p. 747

The serpinins are relatively novel peptides generated by proteolytic processing of chromogranin A and they are comprised of free serpinin, serpinin-RRG and pGlu-serpinin. In this study, the presence and source of these peptides were studied in the skin. By Western blot analysis, a 40 kDa and a 50 kDa protein containing the sequence of serpinin were detected in the trigeminal ganglion and dorsal root ganglia in rats but none in the skin. RP-HPLC followed by EIA revealed that the three serpinins are present in similar, moderate amounts in rat dorsal root ganglia, whereas in the rat skin, free serpinin represents the predominant molecular form. There were abundant serpinin-positive cells in rat dorsal root ganglia and colocalization with substance P was evident. However, much more widespread distribution of the serpinins was found in dorsal root ganglia when compared with substance P. In the skin, serpinin immunoreactivity was found in sensory nerves and showed colocalization with substance P; as well, some was present in autonomic nerves. Thus, although not exclusively, there is evidence that serpinin is a constituent of the sensory innervation of the skin. The serpinins are biologically highly active and might therefore be of functional significance in the skin.
