4. Highly efficient removal of heavy metals from waters by magnetic chitosan-based composite

Abstract: Magnetic chitosan composite (MCC) made by chitosan matrix embedding magnetite/maghemite were developed for the removal of toxic Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) from water. Thermogravimetric (TGA) and Zeta potential analyses showed that MCC contains ca. 50 wt % of chitosan and presents a value of isoelectric point (pHIEP) around 8-8.5. The magnetization curve revealed a saturation magnetization of 12 emu g−1, which indicates that MCC can be easily recovered by magnetic separation. Adsorption of the heavy metals to MCC reached equilibrium within 120 min with maximum uptakes of 108.9 mg g−1, 216.8 mg g−1 and 220.9 mg g−1 for Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The results show that the amino and hydroxyl functional groups of chitosan are involved in the adsorption process. The reported adsorption capacity from organic pollutants, such as hydrocarbons, along with the high adsorption capacity shown for heavy metals, point out MCC being a promising versatile adsorbent for wastewater treatments.

Abstract: The Lab4treat experience has been developed to demonstrate the use of magnetic materials in environmental applications. It was projected in the frame of the European project Mat4Treat, and it was tested several times in front of different audiences ranging from school students to the general public in training and/or divulgation events. The experience lends itself to discuss several aspects of actuality, physics and chemistry, which can be explained by modulating the discussion depth level, in order to meet the interests of younger or more experienced people and expand their knowledge. The topic is relevant, dealing with the recycling of urban waste and water depollution. The paper is placed within the field of water treatment for contaminant removal; therefore, a rich collection of recent (and less recent) papers dealing with magnetic materials and environmental issues is described in the Introduction section. In addition, the paper contains a detailed description of the experiment and a list of the possible topics which can be developed during the activity. The experimental approach makes the comprehension of scientific phenomena effective, and, from this perspective, the paper can be considered to be an example of interactive teaching.

In this study, Na alginate (an aquatic-derived substance isolated from brown algae) is thermally treated under very mild condition (onset temperature). The effectiveness of the conversion has been determined via physicochemical characterizations, showing the possibility of modifying the (bio)polymeric chemical structure just at the beginning of its thermal degradation, guaranteeing an overall energetic beneficial effect.

Abstract: Single-screw extrusion allows obtaining composite films containing poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), hereinafter EVOH, and water-soluble lignin-like biopolymers (SLP) isolated from the alkaline hydrolysate of two materials sampled from an urban waste treatment plant. During extrusion, a condensation reaction occurs between the EVOH and SLP. The products are heterogeneous. They contain a mix of EVOH-SLP copolymers with different composition and solubility properties. The films were characterized for tensile strength and water sorption properties. Young modulus and strain at break, respectively, were 2.8 GPa and 14% for neat EVOH vs. 2.1-0.9 GPa and 17–4% for the blends containing 2–15% SLP, with values decreasing upon increasing the % SLP. The blends were more hydrophilic than neat EVOH; their water sorption capacity was found to increase upon increasing the SLP content. Compared to previously reported similar blends obtained by twin-screw extrusion and solvent casting, the data for the single-screw extruded films allows discussing several aspects connected to the valorisation of blends obtained from fossil and biowaste sourced polymers.

Abstract: Composted urban biowaste-derived substances (BBS-GC) are used as carbon sources for the preparation of carbon-coated magnet-sensitive nanoparticles obtained via co-precipitation method and the subsequent thermal treatment at 550 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. A multitechnique approach has been applied to investigate the morphology, magnetic properties, phase composition, thermal stability of the obtained magnet-sensitive materials. In particular, pyrolysis-induced modifications affecting the BBS-GC/carbon shell were highlighted. The adsorption capacity of such bio-derivative magnetic materials for the removal of hydrophobic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was evaluated in order to verify their potential application in wastewater remediation process. The promising results suggest their use as a new generation of magnet-responsive easily-recoverable adsorbents for water purification treatments.

Moreover, hybrid magnetite-BBS nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized, in order to improve the sensitizer recovery and reuse after the caffeine degradation. In the presence of such nanoparticles and H2O2 and Fe(II), the complete caffeine degradation has been attained in very short time. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous processes were run at pH = 5, milder condition compared to the classic photo-Fenton process.

Abstract: In this study, bio-based substances (BBS) obtained from composted urban biowaste are used as stabilizers for the synthesis of magnet-sensitive nanoparticles (NPs). The BBS-stabilized NPs are characterized by means of different techniques (FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET analysis, magnetization curves). Additionally, TGA coupled on-line with FTIR and GC/MS analysis of the exhausted gas are performed in order to simultaneously identify all the degradation products and evaluate the exact composition of such BBS-stabilized materials. Moreover, Fenton-like or photo-Fenton-like experiments carried out at circumneutral pH are performed in order to evaluate the BBS-functionalized NPs photo-activity towards the degradation of caffeine (taken as model emerging pollutant). The obtained promising results encourage the use of BBS as a green alternative tool for the preparation of smart materials with enhanced magnet-sensitive properties, also suitable for applications in wastewater purification treatments.

24. Chitosan-derived iron oxide systems for magnetically guided and efficient water purification processes from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract: Chitosan and pyrolyzed chitosan, acting as protective frameworks of magnetic nanoparticles (magnetite/maghemite and/or metallic Fe), have been investigated to be used in magnetically guided water remediation processes from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Chitosan-derived magnet-sensitive materials were first obtained by a one-step coprecipitation method, and then two carbon-derived magnetic chitosan materials were obtained under N2 gas flow at 550 and 800 °C, respectively. The obtained materials were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), and magnetization measurements. Thermal treatment conditions, along with the amounts of chitosan used in the synthesis processes, played a critical role in the crystal structure and magnetic properties of the obtained nanomaterials. The adsorption capacity of chitosan-derived magnet-sensitive materials was tested toward PAHs. The results indicate high sorption capacity for anthracene and naphthalene onto the chitosan-derived material pyrolyzed at 550 °C. Furthermore, experiments performed with a mixture of eight PAHs show that PAH molecules with higher hydrophobicity and more extended aromaticity had stronger sorption capacity. Interestingly, due to the obtained results, the use of chitosan is encouraged as a platform for the creation of green adsorbents for further developments in wastewater purification treatments.

Abstract: To verify whether it is possible, in people with diabetes mellitus (DM) considered at very high cardiovascular (CV) risk, stratify this risk better and identify significant modifiable risk factor (including lifestyle habits) to help patients and clinicians improve CV prevention. People with DM and microvascular diseases or one or more CV risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, poor dietary habits, overweight, physical inactivity) included in the Risk and Prevention study were selected. We considered the combined endpoint of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction and stroke and CV death. A multivariate Cox proportional analysis was carried out to identify relevant predictors. We also used the RECPAM method to identify subgroups of patients at higher risk. In our study, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected (5 % in 5 years). Predictors of CV events were age, male, sex, heart failure, previous atherosclerotic disease, atrial fibrillation, insulin treatment, high HbA1c, heart rate and other CV diseases while being physically active was protective. RECPAM analysis indicated that history of atherosclerotic diseases and a low BMI defined worse prognosis (HR 4.51 95 % CI 3.04–6.69). Among subjects with no previous atherosclerotic disease, men with HbA1c more than 8 % were at higher CV risk (HR 2.77; 95 % CI 1.86–4.14) with respect to women. In this population, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected. This prediction model could help clinicians identify people with DM at higher CV risk and support them in achieving goals of physical activity and HbA1c.

Abstract: Water-soluble biopolymers (SBO) were isolated from the alkaline hydrolysate of two materials sampled from an urban waste treatment plant; that is, an anaerobic fermentation digestate and a compost. The digestate biopolymers contained more lipophilic and aliphatic C, and less acidic functional groups than the compost biopolymers. The SBO were blended with poly (vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene), hereinafter EVOH. The blends were extruded and characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC)– multi angle static light scattering (MALS) analysis, and for their thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties. The blends behavior depended on the type of SBO and its relative content. Evidence was obtained for a condensation reaction occurring between the EVOH and SBO. The best results were obtained with the blends containing up to 10% SBO isolated from the biowaste anaerobic digestate. Compared with the neat EVOH, these blends exhibited lower melt viscosity and no significant or great difference in mechanical properties. The results on the extrudates, compared with those previously obtained on the same blends obtained by solvent casting, indicate that the blends properties depend strongly also on the processing technology.

Abstract: In this study, chitosan, a commercially-available linear polysaccharide mainly used as antibacterial agent, functional coating and drug-delivery system, is investigated to enlighten both water interactions and its thermal stability by using a set of complementary advanced thermal techniques, rarely applied in polysaccharides characterizations. DSC and TGA, here coupled with FTIR and GCMS analysis of the exhausted gas, were used to reveal thermal events and identify degradation products as a function of the temperature: three main steps in chitosan (N-deacetylation degree, DD = 78%) thermal degradation were highlighted and mechanism proposed. In order to make a comparison with other analogous polymeric systems and validate the results obtained, a medical grade chitosan (DD > 93%) and a commercial chitin were investigated too. Moreover, the water adsorption capacity of chitosan (DD = 78%) was followed by using thermo-microgravimetry (TMG) and the distinction between weight losses of both physically and chemically adsorbed water molecules was achieved. The approach followed allows a complete characterization of the thermal behaviors of the chitosan and highlights the need for complementary advanced thermal techniques in the detailed characterization of complex biopolymers.

Abstract: Iron-based nanomaterials have found many applications in several technologic fields, including drug delivery systems or waste-water treatments [1], due to their unique magnetic properties. The main advantage related to the use of iron salts and oxides is their relatively low toxicity and cheapness. In addition, the production of materials containing magnetic nanoparticles (m-NPs) offers advantages over the non-magnetic ones because they can be easily separated from liquid and solid media applying an external magnetic field. However, problems related to this system is that m-NPs tend to easily aggregate and oxidize into the non-magnetic hematite, thus m-NPs need to be stabilized in order to preserve their behaviors. This can be obtained covering m-NPs with protective coatings, such as organic and/or polymeric matrices. Magnetic materials consisting of iron oxide particles (typically magnetite and/or maghemite) dispersed in organic matrices received great attention as a new generation of magnetic-responsive hybrid materials, which combine the features of both components [2]. Chitosans (biopolymers derived from fish industry wastes) and soluble bio-based products (SBOs, macromolecules obtained from green wastes composted) are considered potential candidates for the production of magnetic composites for their very limited cost and for the wastes valorization. Thanks to their complex and versatile structures, these classes of compounds were used and tested in the waste water purification from heavy metals and/or dyes, in marine water bioremediation from oil spills, in membrane technologies, etc. [3,4]. Abstract: Background Trials have shown a beneficial effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with a previous myocardial infarction or heart failure. We evaluated the potential benefit of such therapy in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease who had not had a myocardial infarction. Methods In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, we enrolled a cohort of patients who were followed by a network of 860 general practitioners in Italy. Eligible patients were men and women with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease but not myocardial infarction. Patients were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids (1 g daily) or placebo (olive oil). The initially specified primary end point was the cumulative rate of death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. At 1 year, after the event rate was found to be lower than anticipated, the primary end point was revised as time to death from cardiovascular causes or admission to the hospital for cardiovascular causes. Results Of the 12,513 patients enrolled, 6244 were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids and 6269 to placebo. With a median of 5 years of follow-up, the primary end point occurred in 1478 of 12,505 patients included in the analysis (11.8%), of whom 733 of 6239 (11.7%) had received n-3 fatty acids and 745 of 6266 (11.9%) had received placebo (adjusted hazard ratio with n-3 fatty acids, 0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.08; P=0.58). The same null results were observed for all the secondary end points. Conclusions In a large general-practice cohort of patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, daily treatment with n-3 fatty acids did not reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Abstract: Objectives To evaluate the effect of spermatic vein ligation in patients over 30 years old and with low-grade left varicocele, and thus help to establish whether such patients might benefit from surgery. Patients and methods A randomized study was conducted on 68 infertile patients (30–38 years old) with evidence of sperm abnormalities and who had low-grade varicocele (grade I according to Hirsch), comparing left spermatic vein ligation with no treatment. The outcome was assessed by standard sperm analysis and eventual paternity. Results There was no improvement in sperm quality in either of the groups one year after surgery, and no significant difference in paternity. Conclusions Left spermatic vein ligation for low-grade varicocele in patients more than 30 years old cannot be recommended.

Abstract: Caffeine-photosensitized degradation has been studied in the presence of bio-based materials derived from urban biowaste after aerobic aging. A peculiar fraction (namely bio-based substances (BBSs)), soluble in all the pH range, has been used as photosensitizing agent. Several caffeine photodegradation tests have been performed, and positive results have been obtained in the presence of BBSs and HO, without and with additional Fe(II) (photo-Fenton-like process). Moreover, hybrid magnetite-BBS nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized, in order to improve the sensitizer recovery and reuse after the caffeine degradation. In the presence of such nanoparticles and HO and Fe(II), the complete caffeine degradation has been attained in very short time. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous processes were run at pH = 5, milder condition compared to the classic photo-Fenton process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We studied in retrospect 144 patients suffering from blunt trauma of the kidney in order to better define the indications for radiological assessment and surgical treatment. If staging is fundamental, most of ail for high-risk patients, it is our opinion that urography must still be considered the decisive X-ray test to assess the renal parenchyma and the urinary tract of the kidney as well as the integrity of the adelph. In cases with micro hematuria and in absence of shock, ultrasound diagnosis is used in place of urography, whereas computerized tomography of the abdomen must be restricted to the cases of renal autoamputation, urohematic extravasation and suspected intraperitoneal injuries. We adopt conservative treatment for all those injuries to the renal parenchyma which respect the urinary tract, whereas we recommend emergency surgical treatment in those cases involving traumatism of the pedicle or kidney fragmentation. We instead postpone surgical treatment in all other cases, following spontaneous haemostasis of the renal space. We believe that both the rate of death and invalidating consequences from traumatic pathology of the kidney can be significantly reduced where there is qualified pre-hospital assistance and cooperation with a medical facility offering rapid detailed diagnosis and specific medicosurgical treatment.

Abstract: Purpose: Transthoracic 3D echocardiography (3DE) allows an unparalleled opportunity for quantifying the dynamic changes of the tricuspid annulus (TA). Accordingly, our aims were: (I) to assess the determinants of TA size during cardiac cycle in healthy subjects; (II) to propose an approach and timing for TA sizing using 3DE. Methods: In 50 healthy volunteers (45±14 yrs, range 18-74, 27 males, with no risk factors, symptoms, signs or history of cardiovascular disease and on no medication), a full-volume dataset of the right ventricle (RV) containing the tricuspid valve (TV) was acquired (Vivid E9, GE Healthcare). TA diameters (septo-lateral, SL; antero-posterior, AP) and areas were measured on multiplanar images (Flexi-slice, EchoPac BT12, GE Healthcare) at 5 time points during the cardiac cycle: OS (onset of systole, at TV closure); MS (mid-systole); ES (end-systole); ED (onset of diastole); LD (late diastole, after the P wave). RV volumes and ejection fraction (EF) were analyzed with commercial software (4D RV analysis, TomTec, D). Results: Temporal resolution of the 3D datasets was 32±4 vps (range 24-53). TA areas were more closely correlated with RV volumes and body surface area (BSA) than with either SL or AP diameters. TA areas increased during systole from OS (3.9±0.6 cm2/m2) to ES (4.9±0.8 cm2/m2) and reached its largest area in LD (6.7±1.0 cm2/m2). All 5 TA areas were correlated with BSA (r range 0.57-0.62) and RV volumes (r ranges 0.53-0.60 for end-diastolic volume and 0.43-0.50 for end-systolic volume, p<0.0001 for all). Indexed TA areas were not related to either age or gender. With multivariable analysis, both RV end-diastolic volume and BSA determined TA areas during systole and early diastole, while TA area at LD and at OS were independently related with BSA only. Conclusions: In healthy subjects, the main determinants of TA size are RV volume and BSA. The largest TA area occurs at LD and is independently related with BSA only. Therefore, normative values should be based on TA areas measured at LD and indexed for BSA. However, the rapid change in TA areas occurring from LD to OS underscores the importance of adequate temporal resolution of 3DE data sets for reliable TA measurements.

Abstract: The Lab4treat experience has been developed to demonstrate the use of magnetic materials in environmental applications. It was projected in the frame of the European project Mat4Treat, and it was tested several times in front of different audiences ranging from school students to the general public in training and/or divulgation events. The experience lends itself to discuss several aspects of actuality, physics and chemistry, which can be explained by modulating the discussion depth level, in order to meet the interests of younger or more experienced people and expand their knowledge. The topic is relevant, dealing with the recycling of urban waste and water depollution. The paper is placed within the field of water treatment for contaminant removal, therefore, a rich collection of recent (and less recent) papers dealing with magnetic materials and environmental issues is described in the Introduction section. In addition, the paper contains a detailed description of the experiment and a list of the possible topics which can be developed during the activity. The experimental approach makes the comprehension of scientific phenomena effective, and, from this perspective, the paper can be considered to be an example of interactive teaching.

Abstract: Magnetic chitosan composite (MCC) made by chitosan matrix embedding magnetite/maghemite were developed for the removal of toxic Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) from water. Thermogravimetric (TGA) and Zeta potential analyses showed that MCC contains ca. 50 wt % of chitosan and presents a value of isoelectric point (pHIEP) around 8-8.5. The magnetization curve revealed a saturation magnetization of 12 emu g−1, which indicates that MCC can be easily recovered by magnetic separation. Adsorption of the heavy metals to MCC reached equilibrium within 120 min with maximum uptakes of 108.9 mg g−1, 216.8 mg g−1 and 220.9 mg g−1 for Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The results show that the amino and hydroxyl functional groups of chitosan are involved in the adsorption process. The reported adsorption capacity from organic pollutants, such as hydrocarbons, along with the high adsorption capacity shown for heavy metals, point out MCC being a promising versatile adsorbent for wastewater treatments.

Abstract: Pyrolysis is the simplest method to convert bio-based materials into carbonaceous chars. In this study, Na alginate (an aquatic-derived substance isolated from brown algae) is thermally treated under very mild condition (onset temperature). The effectiveness of the conversion has been determined via physicochemical characterizations, showing the possibility of modifying the (bio)polymeric chemical structure just at the beginning of its thermal degradation, guaranteeing an overall energetic beneficial effect.

Abstract: Composted urban biowaste-derived substances (BBS-GC) are used as carbon sources for the preparation of carbon-coated magnet-sensitive nanoparticles obtained via co-precipitation method and the subsequent thermal treatment at 550 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. A multitechnique approach has been applied to investigate the morphology, magnetic properties, phase composition, thermal stability of the obtained magnet-sensitive materials. In particular, pyrolysis-induced modifications affecting the BBS-GC/carbon shell were highlighted. The adsorption capacity of such bio-derivative magnetic materials for the removal of hydrophobic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was evaluated in order to verify their potential application in wastewater remediation process. Abstract: In this study, chitosan, a commercially-available linear polysaccharide mainly used as antibacterial agent, functional coating and drug-delivery system, is investigated to enlighten both water interactions and its thermal stability by using a set of complementary advanced thermal techniques, rarely applied in polysaccharides characterizations. DSC and TGA, here coupled with FTIR and GCMS analysis of the exhausted gas, were used to reveal thermal events and identify degradation products as a function of the temperature: three main steps in chitosan (N-deacetylation degree, DD = 78%) thermal degradation were highlighted and mechanism proposed. In order to make a comparison with other analogous polymeric systems and validate the results obtained, a medical grade chitosan (DD > 93%) and a commercial chitin were investigated too. Moreover, the water adsorption capacity of chitosan (DD = 78%) was followed by using thermo-microgravimetry (TMG) and the distinction between weight losses of both physically and chemically adsorbed water molecules was achieved. The approach followed allows a complete characterization of the thermal behaviors of the chitosan and highlights the need for complementary advanced thermal techniques in the detailed characterization of complex biopolymers.
