The emission of the pre-equilibrium particles during nuclear collisions at moderate beam energies is still an open question. This influences the properties of the compound nucleus but also changes the interpretation of the quasi-fission process. A systematic analysis of the data obtained by the FAZIA collaboration during a recent experiment with a neutron rich projectile is presented. The full range of charged particles detected in the experiment is within the limit of isotopic resolution of the FAZIA detector. Quasi-projectile (QP) fragments were detected in majority thanks to the forward angular acceptance of the experimental setup which was confirmed by introducing cuts based on the HIPSE event generator calculations. The main goal was to compare the experimental results with the HIPSE simulations after introducing these cuts to investigate the influence of the n-rich entrance channel on the QP fragment properties. More specifically, the lowering of N/Z of QP fragments with beam energy was found to be present since the initial phase of the reaction. This article presents an investigation of isospin equilibration in cross-bombarding $^{40,48}$Ca$+^{40,48}$Ca reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon, by comparing experimental data with filtered transport model calculations. Isospin diffusion is studied using the evolution of the isospin transport ratio with centrality. The asymmetry parameter $\delta=(N-Z)/A$ of the quasiprojectile (QP) residue is used as isospin-sensitive observable, while a recent method for impact parameter reconstruction is used for centrality sorting. A benchmark of global observables is proposed to assess the relevance of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model, coupled to GEMINI++, in the study of dissipative collisions. Our results demonstrate the importance of considering cluster formation to reproduce observables used for isospin transport and centrality studies. Within the AMD model, we prove the applicability of the impact parameter reconstruction method, enabling a direct comparison to the experimental data for the investigation of isospin diffusion. For both, we evidence a tendency to isospin equilibration with an impact parameter decreasing from 9 to 3 fm, while the full equilibration is not reached. A weak sensitivity to the stiffness of the equation of state employed in the model is also observed, with a better reproduction of the experimental trend for the neutron-rich reactions.

The neutron emission in projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies was studied with the Large-Area-Neutron-Detector LAND coupled to the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen-Synchrotron (SIS). Stable 124Sn and radioactive 107Sn and 124La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV/nucleon were used to explore the N/Z dependence of the identified neutron source. A cluster-recognition algorithm is applied for identifying individual particles within the hit distributions registered with LAND. The obtained momentum distributions are extrapolated over the full phase space occupied by the neutrons from the projectile-spectator source. The mean multiplicities of spectator neutrons reach values of up to about 11 and depend strongly on the isotopic composition of the projectile. An effective source temperature of T \approx 2-5 MeV, monotonically increasing with decreasing impact parameter, is deduced from the transverse momentum distributions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model were performed. The variety of excited projectile spectators assumed to decay statistically is represented by an ensemble of excited sources with parameters determined previously from the fragment production observed in the same experiments. The obtained agreement is very satisfactory for more peripheral collisions where, according to the model, neutrons are mainly emitted during the secondary decays of excited fragments. The neutron multiplicity in more central collisions is underestimated, indicating that other sources besides the modeled statistical breakup contribute to the observed neutron yield. The choice made for the symmetry-term coefficient of the liquid-drop description of produced fragments has a weak effect on the predicted neutron multiplicities., Comment: 22 pages, 24 figures, to appear in Physical Review C

An investigation of the quasiprojectile breakup channel in semiperipheral and peripheral collisions of $^{58,64}$Ni+$^{58,64}$Ni at 32 and 52 MeV/nucleon is presented. Data have been acquired in the first experimental campaign of the INDRA-FAZIA apparatus in GANIL. The effect of isospin diffusion between projectile and target in the two asymmetric reactions has been highlighted by means of the isospin transport ratio technique, exploiting the neutron-to-proton ratio of the quasiprojectile reconstructed from the two breakup fragments. We found evidence that, for the same reaction centrality, a higher degree of relaxation of the initial isospin imbalance is achieved in the breakup channel with respect to the more populated binary output, possibly indicating the indirect selection of specific dynamical features. We have proposed an interpretation based on different average projectile-target contact times related to the two exit channels under investigation, with a longer interaction for the breakup channel. The time information has been extracted from AMD simulations of the studied systems coupled to GEMINI++: the model calculations support the hypothesis hereby presented.

Four different reactions, $^{32}$S+$^{12}$C and $^{20}$Ne+$^{12}$C at 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon, have been measured with the FAZIA detector capable of full isotopic identification of most forward emitted reaction products. Fragment multiplicities, angular distributions and energy spectra have been measured and compared with Monte Carlo simulations, i.e. the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) and the heavy-ion phase space exploration (HIPSE) models. These models are combined with two different afterburner codes (HF$l$ and SIMON) to describe the decay of the excited primary fragments. In the case of AMD, the effect of including the clustering and inter-clustering processes to form bound particles and fragments is discussed. A clear confirmation of the role of cluster aggregation in the reaction dynamics and particle production for these light systems, for which the importance of the clustering process increases with bombarding energy, is obtained., Comment: 15 pages, 14 PDF figures

An analysis of the asymmetric reactions $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{12}$C at 25 and 40 MeV/nucleon is presented. Data have been collected with six modules of the FAZIA array. The analysis is focused on the breakup channel of sources produced in dissipative collisions, partially corresponding to incomplete fusion processes. The study has been performed both on detected fragments and on some resonances reconstructed by means of particle-fragment correlations, with a focus on the evolution of the breakup channel with the beam energy and the neutron content of the system, looking in particular at the relative velocity between the breakup fragments. Results show that also Carbon fragments reconstructed by means of particle correlations can be in large part interpreted as the light partner of a scission.

By using freeze-out properties of multifragmenting hot nuclei produced in quasifusion central $^{129}$Xe+$^{nat}$Sn collisions at different beam energies (32, 39, 45 and 50 AMeV) which were estimated by means of a simulation based on experimental data collected by the $4\pi$ INDRA multidetector, heat capacity in the thermal excitation energy range 4 - 12.5 AMeV was calculated from total kinetic energies and multiplicities at freeze-out. The microcanonical formulation was employed. We investigate the isospin transport with 40,48 Ca+ 40,48 Ca reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon, measured with the coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector. Using the quasi-projectile remnant measured with VAMOS and carefully selected light-charged-particles measured in coincidence with INDRA, a reconstruction method is applied to estimate the excited quasi-projectile (QP) on an event-by-event basis. The isospin diffusion is investigated using the isospin transport ratio with the asymmetry $\delta$ = (N -- Z)/A of the projectile as an isospin-sensitive observable and the total transverse energy of Z $\le$ 2 nuclei for experimental centrality sorting. The experimental isospin transport ratios present, for both the reconstructed QP and its remnant, a clear evolution towards isospin equilibration with increasing dissipation of the collision while the full equilibration is not reached. A smoother evolution with less discrepancies between the two mixed systems in the case of the reconstructed QP is also observed. The isospin migration is investigated using the neutron-to-proton ratio of the light-charged-clusters and the velocity of the QP remnant as a sorting parameter. More particularly, we focused on an angular region centered around the mid-rapidity of the reaction so as to characterize the low-density neck emissions. A systematic neutron-enrichment is observed and interpreted as a consequence of isospin migration, more particularly for the symmetric systems which present no isospin gradient between the projectile and the target. We also noticed that the ^{2}H and ^{4}He particles exhibit very close multiplicities independently of the sorting variable for the symmetric systems.

An investigation of the isospin equilibration process in the reactions $^{58,64}$Ni+$^{58,64}$Ni at two bombarding energies in the Fermi regime ($32\,$MeV/nucleon and $52\,$MeV/nucleon) is presented. Data have been acquired during the first experimental campaign of the coupled INDRA-FAZIA apparatus in GANIL. Selecting from peripheral to semi-central collisions, both the neutron content of the quasiprojectile residue and that of the light ejectiles coming from the quasiprojectile evaporation have been used as probes of the dynamical process of isospin diffusion between projectile and target for the asymmetric systems. The isospin transport ratio technique has been employed. The relaxation of the initial isospin imbalance with increasing centrality has been clearly evidenced. The isospin equilibration appears stronger for the reactions at $32\,$MeV/nucleon, as expected due to the longer projectile-target interaction time than at $52\,$MeV/nucleon. Coherent indications of isospin equilibration come from the quasiprojectile residue characteristics and from particles ascribed to the quasiprojectile decay.

In this article we investigate $^{40,48}$Ca+$^{40,48}$Ca peripheral and semi-peripheral reactions at 35 MeV/nucleon. Data were obtained using the unique coupling of the VAMOS high acceptance spectrometer and the INDRA charged particle multidetector.The spectrometer allowed high resolution measurement of charge, mass and velocity of the cold projectile-like fragment (PLF), while the INDRA detector recorded coincident charged particles with nearly $4\pi$ acceptance.The measured isotopic composition of the PLF identified in VAMOS and the average light charged particle (LCP) multiplicities are promising observables to study the isospin diffusion.The detection of the PLF in coincidence with LCP allows the reconstruction of the mass, charge and excitation energy of the associated initial quasi-projectile nuclei (QP), as well as the extraction of apparent temperatures.We investigate the suitability of the isoscaling method with the PLF and the experimental reconstructed QP.The extracted $\alpha$ and $\Delta$ isoscaling parameters present a dependence on the considered system combination that could justify their use as a surrogate for isospin asymmetry in isospin transport studies.The reconstruction of the QP allows to observe an evolution of the $\alpha/\Delta$ with the size of the QP, the latter being consistent with a strong surface contribution to the symmetry energy term in finite nuclei. This leads to the conclusion that the reconstruction of the primary source is mandatory for the study of the symmetry energy term based on the isoscaling method for such reactions.

The neutron-proton equilibration process in 48 Ca+ 40 Ca at 35 MeV/nucleon bombarding energy has been experimentally estimated by means of the isospin transport ratio. Experimental data have been collected with a subset of the FAZIA telescope array, which permitted to determine Z and N of detected fragments. For the first time, the QP evaporative channel has been compared with the QP break-up one in a homogeneous and consistent way, pointing out to a comparable n-p equilibration which suggests close interaction time between projectile and target independently of the exit channel. Moreover, in the QP evaporative channel n-p equilibration has been compared with the prediction of the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) model coupled to the GEMINI statistical model as an afterburner, showing a larger probability of proton and neutron transfers in the simulation with respect to the experimental data.

We present a model-independent method to reconstruct the impact parameter distributions of experimental data for intermediate energy heavy ion collisions, adapted from a recently proposed approach for ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The method takes into account the fluctuations which are inherent to the relationship between any experimental observable and the impact parameter in this energy range. We apply the method to the very large dataset on heavy ion collisions in the energy range 20-100 MeV/nucleon obtained with the INDRA multidetector since 1993, for two observables which are the most commonly used for the estimation of impact parameters in this energy range. The mean impact parameters deduced with this new method for "central" collisions selected using typical observable cuts are shown to be significantly larger than those found when fluctuations are neglected, and as expected the difference increases as bombarding energy decreases. In addition, we will show that this new approach may provide previously inaccessible experimental constraints for transport models, such as an estimation of the extrapolated mean value of experimental observables for b = 0 collisions. The ability to give more realistic, model-independent, estimations of the impact parameters associated to different experimental datasets should improve the pertinence of comparisons with transport model calculations which are essential to better constrain the equation of state of nuclear matter., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Experimental results concerning the dynamical fission of quasiprojectiles in semiperipheral collisions for the system 80 Kr+ 48 Ca at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four blocks of the FAZIA setup in the first physics experiment of the FAZIA Collaboration. The degree of isospin equilibration between the two fission fragments and its dependence on their charge asymmetry is investigated. The data are compared with the results of the AMD model coupled to GEMINI as an afterburner, in order to get hints about the timescale of the process.

Isospin transport ratio is a powerful method to estimate the neutron-proton (n-p) equilibration in heavy-ion collisions, and extensively used to obtain information on the asy-stiffness of the nuclear Equation of State. In fact such a ratio is expected to bypass any perturbations introducing a linear transformation of the chosen observable. In particular, it is supposed to overcome contributions due to emission, either of dynamical or statistical nature, from the primary fragments formed during the collisions. In this paper we explore the validity of this assumption, looking at the quasi-projectile n-p ratio ($N/Z$) in peripheral and semi-peripheral events for Ca+Ca reactions at 35\amev{}, simulated via the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics transport model, coupled to different statistical decay codes. The statistical de-excitation of the primary fragments introduces a linear transformation at relatively high excitation energies (above 2\amev{}) when the residue approaches the Evaporation Attractor Line, while some effect is produced at lower excitation energies due to the occurrence of some non-linearities. As for fast emissions after the end of the projectile-target interaction it is shown that they introduce a non-linear transformation too.

The simultaneous measurement of the isotopic fission-fragment yields and fission-fragment velocities of $^{239}$U has been performed for the first time. The $^{239}$U fissioning system was produced in one-neutron transfer reactions between a $^{238}$U beam at 5.88 MeV/nucleon and a $^{9}$Be target. The combination of inverse kinematics at low energy and the use of the VAMOS++ spectrometer at the GANIL facility allows the isotopic identification of the full fission-fragment distribution and their velocity in the reference frame of the fissioning system. The proton and neutron content of the fragments at scission, their total kinetic and total excitation energy, as well as the neutron multiplicity were determined. Information from the scission point configuration is obtained from these observables and the correlation between them. The role of the octupole-deformed proton and neutron shells in the fission-fragment production is discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Equilibrium constants for Hydrogen and Helium isotopes as a function of density and temperature are measured in the framework of the study made by Qin et al. [Qin L et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 172701]. We review and comment on all stages of the analysis and conclude that our measurements are not inconsistent with Qin et al. results. Improvements are being made to the initial analysis and we raise the issue of the binding energies which has to be clarified., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

A direct and complete measurement of isotopic fission-fragment yields of $^{239}$U has been performed for the first time. The $^{239}$U fissioning system was produced with an average excitation energy of 8.3 MeV in one-neutron transfer reactions between a $^{238}$U beam and a $^{9}$Be target at Coulomb barrier energies. The fission fragments were detected and isotopically identified using the VAMOS++ spectrometer at the GANIL facility. This measurement allows to directly evaluate the fission models at excitation energies of fast neutrons, relevant for next-generation nuclear reactors. The present data, in agreement with model calculations, do not support the recently reported anomaly in the fission-fragment yields of $^{239}$U and confirm the persistence of spherical shell effects in the Sn region at excitation energies exceeding the fission barrier by few MeV.

In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 AMeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. In nuclear thermodynamics, the determination of the excitation energy of hot nuclei is a fundamental experimental problem. Instrumental physicists have been trying to solve this problem for several years by building the most exhaustive 4Pi detector arrays and perfecting their calorimetry techniques. In a recent paper, a proposal for a new calorimetry, called "3D calorimetry", was made. It tries to optimize the separation between the particles and fragments emitted by the Quasi-Projectile and the other possible contributions. This can be achieved by determining the experimental probability for a given nucleus of a nuclear reaction to be emitted by the Quasi-Projectile. It has been developed for the INDRA data. In the present work, we wanted to dissect and validate this new method of characterization of a hot Quasi-Projectile. So we tried to understand and control it completely to determine these limits. Using the HIPSE event generator and a software simulating the functioning of INDRA, we were able to achieve this goal and provide a quantitative estimation of the quality of the QP characterization.

In highly dissipative collisions between heavy ions, the optimal conditions to investigate different de-excitation channels of hot nuclei such as evaporation, fission or multifragmentation are well known. One crucial issue remains the excitation energy region where fission gives way to multifragmentation. In this paper, the onset of multi-fragment exit channels is investigated in terms of sequential fission. For the first time, the dynamical approach based on solving Langevin transport equations in multidimensional collective coordinate space is used to follow the de-excitation of highly excited (up to E* =223-656 MeV) 248Rf compound nuclei. The sequential fission model we propose contains two steps: (1) time evolution of the compound nucleus up to either scission or residue formation, followed by (2) dynamical calculations of each primary fragment separately. This procedure allows to obtain from one to four cold fragments correlated with the light particles emitted during the de-excitation process. Experimental data measured with the INDRA detector for the 129Xe+ natSn reaction at beam energies 8, 12 and 15 MeV/nucleon provide strong constraints for this sequential fission scenario.

In the domain of Fermi energy, it is extremely complex to isolate experimentally fragments and particles issued from the cooling of a hot nucleus produced during a heavy ion collision. This paper presents a new method to characterize more precisely hot Quasi-Projectiles. It tries to take into account as accurately as possible the distortions generated by all the other potential participants in the nuclear reaction. It is quantitatively shown that this method is a major improvement respect to classic calorimetries used with a 4$\pi$ detector array. By detailing and deconvolving the different steps of the reconstitution of the hot nucleus, this study shows also the respective role played by the experimental device and the event selection criteria on the quality of the determination of QP characteristics., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, will be submitted to PRC

Profiting from previous works done with the \emph{INDRA} multidetector on the description of the light response $\mathcal L$ of the CsI(\emph{Tl}) crystals to different impinging nuclei, we propose an improved $\Delta E - \mathcal L$ identification-calibration procedure for Silicon-Cesium Iodide (Si-CsI) telescopes, namely an Advanced Mass Estimate (\emph{AME}) method. \emph{AME} is compared to the usual, %$"\Delta E - E"$ simple visual analysis of the corresponding two-dimensional map of $\Delta E - E$ type, by using \emph{INDRA} experimental data from nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions in the Fermi energy regime. We show that the capability of such telescopes to identify both the atomic $Z$ and the mass $A$ numbers of light and heavy reaction products, can be quantitatively improved thanks to the proposed approach. This conclusion opens new possibilities to use \emph{INDRA} for studying these reactions especially with radioactive beams. In the domain of Fermi energy, the hot nucleus temperature can be determined by using the energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles. But this method of measurement is not without difficulties both theoretical and experimental. The presented study aims to disentangle the respective influences of different factors on the quality of this measurement : the physics, the detection (a 4? detector array as INDRA) and the experimental procedure. This analysis demonstrates the possibility of determining from an energy spectrum, with an accuracy of about 10 %, the true apparent temperature felt by a given type of particle emitted by a hot nucleus. Three conditions are however necessary : have a perfect detector of particles, an important statistics and very few secondary emissions. According to the GEMINI event generator, for hot nuclei of intermediate mass, only deuterons and tritons could fill these conditions. This temperature can allow to trace back to the initial temperature by using an appropriate method. This determination may be better than 15 %. With a real experimental device, an insufficient angular resolution and topological distortions caused by the detection can damage spectra to the point to make very difficult a correct determination of the apparent temperature. Nuclear particle production from peripheral to central events is presented. N/Z gradient between projectile and target is studied using the fact that two reactions have the same projectile+target N/Z and so the same neutron to proton ratio for the combined system. Inclusive data study in the forward part of the center of mass indicates that N/Z equilibration between the projectile-like and the target-like is achieved for central collisions. Particles are also produced from mid-rapidity region. 3He mean pre-equilibrium character is evidenced and 6He production at mid-rapidity implies a neutron enrichment phenomenon of the projectile target interacting zone., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

This article presents a new semi-automatic method for charge and mass identification in two-dimensional matrices. The proposed algorithm is based on the matrix's properties and uses as little information as possible on the global form of the identification lines, making it applicable to a large variety of matrices, including Particular attention has been paid to the implementation in a suitable graphical environment, so that only two mouse-clicks are required from the user to calculate all initialization parameters. Example applications to recent data from both INDRA and FAZIA telescopes are presented.

\item[Background]Heavy-ion reactions from barrier up to Fermi energy. \item[Purpose]Reaction and fusion cross sections determination. Fusion reactions induced by $^{129}Xe$ projectiles on $^{nat}Sn$ targets for energies ranging from $8$ A.MeV to $35$ A.MeV were measured with the INDRA $4\pi$-array.\\ The evaluation of the fusion/incomplete fusion cross sections for the incident energies from 8 to 35 A.MeV is the main purpose of this paper. \item[Method] The reaction cross sections are evaluated for each beam energy thanks to INDRA $4\pi$-array. The events are also sorted in order to focus the study on a selected sample of events, in such a way that the fusion/fusion incomplete cross section is estimated. \item[Results] The excitation function of reaction and fusion cross sections were measured for the heavy and nearly symmetric system $^{129}Xe + ^{nat}Sn$ from 8 to 35 A.MeV. \item[Conclusions] The fusion-like cross-sections evaluated show a good agrement with a recent systematics for beam energies greater than 20 A.MeV. For low beam energies the cross-section values are lower than the expected ones. An analysis of experimental data from the inverse-kinematics ISODEC experiment on 78Kr+40Ca reaction at a bombarding energy of 10 AMeV has revealed signatures of a hitherto unknown reaction mechanism, intermediate between the classical damped binary collisions and fusion-fission, but also substantially different from what is being termed in the literature as fast fission or quasi fission. These signatures point to a scenario where the system fuses transiently while virtually equilibrating mass asymmetry and energy and, yet, keeping part of the energy stored in a collective shock-imparted and, possibly, angular momentum bearing form of excitation. Subsequently the system fissions dynamically along the collision or shock axis with the emerging fragments featuring a broad mass spectrum centered around symmetric fission, relative velocities somewhat higher along the fission axis than in transverse direction, and virtually no intrinsic spin. The class of massasymmetric fission events shows a distinct preference for the more massive fragments to proceed along the beam direction, a characteristic reminiscent of that reported earlier for dynamic fragmentation of projectile-like fragments alone and pointing to the memory of the initial mass and velocity distribution., Comment: 5 PAGES, 6 FIGURES

A study of identification properties of a Si-Si DE-E telescope exploiting an underdepleted residual-energy detector has been performed. Five different bias voltages have been used, one corresponding to full depletion, the others associated with a depleted layer ranging from 90% to 60% of the detector thickness. Fragment identification has been performed using either the DE-E technique or Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). Both detectors are reverse mounted: particles enter from the low field side, to enhance the PSA performance. The achieved charge and mass resolution has been quantitatively expressed using a Figure of Merit (FoM). Charge collection efficiency has been evaluated and the possibility of energy calibration corrections has been considered. We find that the DE-E performance is not affected by incomplete depletion even when only 60% of the wafer is depleted. Isotopic separation capability improves at lower bias voltages with respect to full depletion, though charge identification thresholds are higher than at full depletion. Good isotopic identification via PSA has been obtained from a partially depleted detector whose doping uniformity is not good enough for isotopic identification at full depletion., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures 5 tables; submitted to European Physical Journal A

The equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter is still controversial, as predictions at subsaturation as well as above normal density widely diverge. We discuss several experimental results measured in heavy-ion collisions with the INDRA array in the incident energy range 5-80 MeV/nucleon. In particular an estimate of the density dependence of the symmetry energy is derived from isospin diffusion results compared with a transport code: the potential part of the symmetry energy linearly increases with the density. We demonstrate that isospin equilibrium is reached in mid-central collisions for the two reactions Ni+Au at 52 MeV/nucleon and Xe+Sn at 32 MeV/nucleon. We present an analysis of multifragmentation events observed in central Xe+Sn reactions at Fermi energies. Performing a comparison between the predictions of the Stochastic Mean Field (SMF) transport model and experimental data, we investigate the impact of the compression-expansion dynamics on the properties of the final reaction products. We show that the amount of radial collective expansion, which characterizes the dynamical stage of the reaction, influences directly the onset of multifragmentation and the kinematic properties of multifragmentation events. For the same set of events we also undertake a shape analysis in momentum space, looking at the degree of stopping reached in the collision, as proposed in recent experimental studies. We show that full stopping is achieved for the most central collisions at Fermi energies. However, considering the same central event selection as in the experimental data, we observe a similar behavior of the stopping power with the beam energy, which can be associated with a change of the fragmentation mechanism, from statistical to prompt fragment emission., Comment: 15 pages

The odd-even staggering of the yield of final reaction products has been studied as a function of proton (Z) and neutron (N) numbers for the collisions 84 Kr+112 Sn and 84 Kr+124 Sn at 35 MeV/nucleon, in a wide range of elements (up to Z ~ 20). The experimental data show that staggering effects rapidly decrease with increasing size of the fragments. Moreover the staggering in N is definitely larger than the one in Z. Similar general features are qualitatively reproduced by the GEMINI code. Concerning the comparison of the two systems, the staggering in N is in general rather similar, being slightly larger only for the lightest fragments produced in the n-rich system. In 129 Xe+ nat Sn central collisions from 8 to 25 MeV/A, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. We show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. The sequence of fragment production is determined. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. A comparison with Coulomb trajec-tory calculations shows that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming quasi-simultaneous above excitation energy E * = 4.0$\pm$0.5 MeV/A. Isospin transport phenomena in dissipative heavy ion collisions have been investigated at Fermi energies with a beam of 84Kr at 35AMeV. A comparison of the /Z of light and medium products forward-emitted in the centre of mass frame when the beam impinges on a n-poor 112Sn and a n-rich 124Sn targets is presented. Data were collected by means of a three-layer telescope with very good performances in terms of mass identification (full isotopic resolution up to Z about 20 for ions punching through the first detector layer) built by the FAZIA Collaboration and located just beyond the grazing angle for both reactions. The /Z of the decay products emitted when the n-rich target is used is always higher than that associated to the n-poor one. Since the detector was able to measure only fragments coming from the QuasiProjectile decay and/or neck emission, the observed behaviour can be ascribed to the isospin diffusion, driven by the isospin gradient between QuasiProjectile and QuasiTarget. Moreover, for light fragments the /Z as a function of the lab velocity of the fragment increases when we move from the QuasiProjectile velocity to the centre of mass (neck zone). The european Fazia collaboration aims at building a new modular array for charged product identification to be employed for heavy-ion studies. The elementary module of the array is a Silicon-Silicon-CsI telescope, optimized for ion identification also via pulse shape analysis. The achievement of top performances imposes specific electronics which has been developed by FAZIA and features high quality charge and current preamplifiers, coupled to fully digital front-end. During the initial R&D phase, original and novel solutions have been tested in prototypes, obtaining unprecedented ion identification capabilities. FAZIA is now constructing a demonstrator array consisting of about two hundreds telescopes arranged in a compact and transportable configuration. In this contribution, we mainly summarize some aspects studied by FAZIA to improve the ion identification. Then we will briefly discuss the FAZIA program centered on experiments to be done with the demonstrator. In this contribution we show that the biggest fragment charge distribution in central collisions of Xe+Sn leading to multifragmentation is an admixture of two asymptotic distributions observed for the lowest and highest bombarding energies. The evolution of the relative weights of the two components with bombarding energy is shown to be analogous to that observed as a function of time for the largest cluster produced in irreversible aggregation for a finite system. Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasi-fused nuclei produced in central $^{129}$Xe + $^{nat}$Sn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties in the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV [Nucl. Phys. A809 (2008) 111]. From these properties and the temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations, constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonic behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Isotopically resolved fragments with Z<=20 have been studied with high resolution telescopes in a test run for the FAZIA collaboration. The fragments were produced by the collision of a 84Kr beam at 35 MeV/nucleon with a n-rich (124Sn) and a n-poor (112Sn) target. The fragments, detected close to the grazing angle, are mainly emitted from the phase-space region of the projectile. The fragment isotopic content clearly depends on the n-richness of the target and it is a direct evidence of isospin diffusion between projectile and target. The observed enhanced neutron richness of light fragments emitted from the phase-space region close to the center of mass of the system can be interpreted as an effect of isospin drift in the diluted neck region., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Distributions of the largest fragment charge, Zmax, in multifragmentation reactions around the Fermi energy can be decomposed into a sum of a Gaussian and a Gumbel distribution, whereas at much higher or lower energies one or the other distribution is asymptotically dominant. We demonstrate the same generic behavior for the largest cluster size in critical aggregation models for small systems, in or out of equilibrium, around the critical point. By analogy with the time-dependent irreversible aggregation model, we infer that Zmax distributions are characteristic of the multifragmentation time-scale, which is largely determined by the onset of radial expansion in this energy range., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters on 8/4/2013

Isospin e ffects on multifragmentation properties were studied thanks to nuclear collisions between di fferent isotopes of xenon beams and tin targets. It is shown that, in central collisions leading to multifragmentation, the mean number of fragments and their mean kinetic energy increase with the neutron-richness of the total system. Comparisons with a stochastic transport model allow to attribute the multiplicity increase to the multifragmentation stage, before secondary decay. The total charge bound in fragments is proposed as an alternate variable to quantify preequilibrium emission and to investigate symmetry energy e ffects., Comment: 10 pages. 6 figures. Collisions of Xe+Sn at beam energies of $E/A$ = 8 to 29 $MeV$ and leading to fusion-like heavy residues are studied using the $4\pi$ INDRA multidetector. The fusion cross section was measured and shows a maximum at $E/A$ = 18-20 $MeV$. A decomposition into four exit-channels consisting of the number of heavy fragments produced in central collisions has been made. Their relative yields are measured as a function of the incident beam energy. The energy spectra of light charged particles (LCP) in coincidence with the fragments of each exit-channel have been analyzed. They reveal that a composite system is formed, it is highly excited and first decays by emitting light particles and then may breakup into 2- or many- fragments or survives as an evaporative residue. A quantitative estimation of this primary emission is given and compared to the secondary decay of the fragments. The performance of the LAND neutron detector is studied. Using an event-mixing technique based on one-neutron data obtained in the S107 experiment at the GSI laboratory, we test the efficiency of various analytic tools used to determine the multiplicity and kinematic properties of detected neutrons. A new algorithm developed recently for recognizing neutron showers from spectator decays in the ALADIN experiment S254 is described in detail. Its performance is assessed in comparison with other methods. The properties of the observed neutron events are used to estimate the detection efficiency of LAND in this experiment., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Decay modes of excited nuclei are investigated in $^{78,82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/nucleon. Charged products were measured by means of the $4\pi$ INDRA array. Kinetic-energy spectra and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 3 $\le Z \le$ 28 indicate a high degree of relaxation and are compatible with a fission-like phenomenon. Persistence of structure effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections ($\sigma_{Z}$) as well as a strong odd-even-staggering (o-e-s) of the light-fragment yields. The magnitude of the staggering does not significantly depend on the neutron content of the emitting system. Fragment-particle coincidences suggest that the light partners in very asymmetric fission are emitted either cold or at excitation energies below the particle emission thresholds. The evaporation residue cross-section of the $^{78}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction is slightly higher than the one measured in $^{82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction. The fission-like component is larger by $\sim$ 25% for the reaction having the lowest neutron-to-proton ratio. These experimental features are confronted to the predictions of theoretical models. The Hauser-Feshbach approach including the emission of fragments up to $Z$ = 14 in their ground states as well as excited states does not account for the main features of $\sigma_{Z}$. For both reactions, the transition-state formalism reasonably reproduces the $Z$-distribution of the fragments with charge 12 $\le Z \le$ 28. However, this model strongly overestimates the light-fragment cross-sections and does not explain the o-e-s of the yields for 6 $\le Z \le$ 10. The shape of the whole $Z$-distribution and the o-e-s of the light-fragment yields are satisfactorily reproduced within the dinuclear system framework which treats the competition between evaporation, fusion-fission and quasifission processes. The model suggests that heavy fragments come mainly from quasifission while light fragments are predominantly populated by fusion. An underestimation of the cross sections for 16 $\le Z \le$ 22 could signal a mechanism in addition to the capture process., Comment: 2 tables, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen Synchrotron (SIS). Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model for a properly chosen ensemble of excited sources were performed. The parameters of the ensemble, representing the variety of excited spectator nuclei expected in a participant-spectator scenario, are determined empirically by searching for an optimum reproduction of the measured fragment-charge distributions and correlations. An overall very good agreement is obtained. The possible modification of the liquid-drop parameters of the fragment description in the hot freeze-out environment is studied, and a significant reduction of the symmetry-term coefficient is found necessary to reproduce the mean neutron-to-proton ratios /Z and the isoscaling parameters of Z<=10 fragments. The calculations are, furthermore, used to address open questions regarding the modification of the surface-term coefficient at freeze-out, the N/Z dependence of the nuclear caloric curve, and the isotopic evolution of the spectator system between its formation during the initial cascade stage of the reaction and its subsequent breakup., Comment: 23 pages, 29 figures, published in Physical Review C
