The United States is facing growing teacher shortages that may disproportionately affecting schools serving high proportions of students of color, low-income students, and those in rural or urban areas. Special education teachers (SETs) are particularly in demand. Each year, nearly half of all vacancies are filled with teachers switching from one school to another, yet little research has addressed the nuances of within-career sorting, especially by subject. Utilizing longitudinal data covering 27 years and over 1.2 million teachers in Texas, this study examines SET switching patterns relative to core subject teachers, utilizing discrete time hazard modeling, fixed-effect regressions, and geographic information system mapping. Results show SETs switch schools at much higher rates, associated with experience, salary, and student demographics, yet generally transfer shorter distances than their peers. These findings highlight differential subject-specific labor market dynamics, suggesting targeted recruitment and retention strategies to address widespread shortages.

Topology is the study of geometrical properties and spatial relations unaffected by continuous changes, and has become an important tool for understanding complex physical systems. Although recent optical experiments have inferred the existence of vector fields with the topologies of merons, the inability to extract the full three dimensional vectors misses a richer set of topologies that have not yet been fully explored. In our work, we extend the study of the topology of electromagnetic fields on surfaces to a spin quasi-particle with the topology of a meron pair, formed by interfering surface plasmon polaritons, and show that the in-plane vectors are constrained by the embedding topology of the space as dictated by the Poincare-Hopf theorem. In addition we explore the time evolution of the three dimensional topology of the spin field formed by femtosecond laser pulses. These experiments are possible using our here developed method called polarimetric photoemission electron microscopy (polarimetric PEEM) that combines an optical pump-probe technique and polarimetry with photo-emission electron microscopy. This method allows for the accurate generation of surface plasmon polariton fields and their subsequent measurement, revealing both the spatial distribution of the full three-dimensional electromagnetic fields at deep sub-wavelength resolution and their time evolution.

The study of van der Waals heterostructures with an interlayer twist, known as "twistronics", has been instrumental in advancing contemporary condensed matter research. Most importantly, it has underpinned the emergence of a multitude of strongly-correlated phases, many of which derive from the topology of the physical system. Here, we explore the application of the twistronics paradigm in plasmonic systems with nontrivial topology, by creating a moir\'e skyrmion superlattice using two superimposed plasmonic skyrmion lattices, twisted at a "magic" angle. The complex electric field distribution of the moir\'e skyrmion superlattice is measured using time-resolved vector microscopy, revealing that each super-cell possesses very large topological invariants and harbors a "skyrmion bag", the size of which is controllable by the twist angle and center of rotation. Our work shows how twistronics leads to a diversity of topological features in optical fields, providing a new route to locally manipulate electromagnetic field distributions, which is crucial for future structured light-matter interaction.

Assuming Galactic cosmic rays originate in supernovae and the winds of massive stars, starburst galaxies should produce very-high-energy (VHE; E$>$100 GeV) gamma-ray emission via the interaction of their copious quantities of cosmic rays with the large reservoirs of dense gas within the galaxies. Such VHE emission was detected by VERITAS from the starburst galaxy M 82 in 2008-09. An extensive, multi-year campaign followed these initial observations, yielding a total of 254 h of good quality VERITAS data on M 82. Leveraging modern analysis techniques and the larger exposure, these VERITAS data show a more statistically significant VHE signal ($\sim$6.5 standard deviations ($\sigma$)). The corresponding photon spectrum is well fit by a power law ($\Gamma = 2.3 \pm 0.3_{stat} \pm0.2_{sys}$) and the observed integral flux is F($>$450 GeV) = $(3.2 \pm0.6_{stat} \pm 0.6_{sys}) \times 10^{-13}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}~s}^{-1}$, or $\sim$0.4\% of the Crab Nebula flux above the same energy threshold. The improved VERITAS measurements, when combined with various multi-wavelength data, enable modeling of the underlying emission and transport processes. A purely leptonic scenario is found to be a poor representation of the gamma-ray spectral energy distribution (SED). A lepto-hadronic scenario with cosmic rays following a power-law spectrum in momentum (index $s\simeq 2.25$), and with significant bremsstrahlung below $1$~GeV, provides a good match to the observed SED. The synchrotron emission from the secondary electrons indicates that efficient non-radiative losses of cosmic-ray electrons may be related to advective escape from the starburst core., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures; Accepted for the publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Diversified economies are critical for cities to sustain their growth and development, but they are also costly because diversification often requires expanding a city's capability base. We analyze how cities manage this trade-off by measuring the coherence of the economic activities they support, defined as the technological distance between randomly sampled productive units in a city. We use this framework to study how the US urban system developed over almost two centuries, from 1850 to today. To do so, we rely on historical census data, covering over 600M individual records to describe the economic activities of cities between 1850 and 1940, and 8 million patent records as well as detailed occupational and industrial profiles of cities for more recent decades. Despite massive shifts in the economic geography of the U.S. over this 170-year period, average coherence in its urban system remains unchanged. Moreover, across different time periods, datasets and relatedness measures, coherence falls with city size at the exact same rate, pointing to constraints to diversification that are governed by a city's size in universal ways.

Dynamic predictive modeling using electronic health record (EHR) data has gained significant attention in recent years. The reliability and trustworthiness of such models depend heavily on the quality of the underlying data, which is largely determined by the stages preceding the model development: data extraction from EHR systems and data preparation. We list over forty challenges encountered during these stages and provide actionable recommendations for addressing them. These challenges are organized into four categories: cohort definition, outcome definition, feature engineering, and data cleaning. This list is designed to serve as a practical guide for data extraction engineers and researchers, supporting better practices and improving the quality and real-world applicability of dynamic prediction models in clinical settings.

As Large Language Models (LLMs) are integrated into electronic health record (EHR) workflows, validated instruments are essential to evaluate their performance before implementation. Existing instruments for provider documentation quality are often unsuitable for the complexities of LLM-generated text and lack validation on real-world data. The Provider Documentation Summarization Quality Instrument (PDSQI-9) was developed to evaluate LLM-generated clinical summaries. Multi-document summaries were generated from real-world EHR data across multiple specialties using several LLMs (GPT-4o, Mixtral 8x7b, and Llama 3-8b). Validation included Pearson correlation for substantive validity, factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha for structural validity, inter-rater reliability (ICC and Krippendorff's alpha) for generalizability, a semi-Delphi process for content validity, and comparisons of high- versus low-quality summaries for discriminant validity. Seven physician raters evaluated 779 summaries and answered 8,329 questions, achieving over 80% power for inter-rater reliability. The PDSQI-9 demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.879; 95% CI: 0.867-0.891) and high inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.867; 95% CI: 0.867-0.868), supporting structural validity and generalizability. Factor analysis identified a 4-factor model explaining 58% of the variance, representing organization, clarity, accuracy, and utility. Substantive validity was supported by correlations between note length and scores for Succinct (rho = -0.200, p = 0.029) and Organized (rho = -0.190, p = 0.037). Discriminant validity distinguished high- from low-quality summaries (p < 0.001). The PDSQI-9 demonstrates robust construct validity, supporting its use in clinical practice to evaluate LLM-generated summaries and facilitate safer integration of LLMs into healthcare workflows.

We consider the voter model with binary opinions on a random regular graph with $n$ vertices of degree $d \geq 3$, subject to a rewiring dynamics in which pairs of edges are rewired, i.e., broken into four half-edges and subsequently reconnected at random. A parameter $\nu \in (0,\infty)$ regulates the frequency at which the rewirings take place, in such a way that any given edge is rewired exponentially at a rate $\nu$ in the limit as $n\to\infty$. We show that, under the joint law of the random rewiring dynamics and the random opinion dynamics, the fraction of vertices with either one of the two opinions converges on time scale $n$ to the Fisher-Wright diffusion with an explicit diffusion constant $\vartheta_{d,\nu}$ in the limit as $n\to\infty$. In particular, we identify $\vartheta_{d,\nu}$ in terms of a continued-fraction expansion and analyse its dependence on $d$ and $\nu$. This paper explores the idea that information is an essential and distinctive feature of living systems. Unlike non-living systems, living systems actively acquire, process, and use information about their environments to respond to changing conditions, sustain themselves, and achieve other intrinsic goals. We discuss relevant theoretical frameworks such as ``semantic information'' and ``fitness value of information''. We also highlight the broader implications of our perspective for fields such as origins-of-life research and astrobiology. In particular, we touch on the transition to information-driven systems as a key step in abiogenesis, informational constraints as determinants of planetary habitability, and informational biosignatures for detecting life beyond Earth. We briefly discuss experimental platforms which offer opportunities to investigate these theoretical concepts in controlled environments. We present Omni-RGPT, a multimodal large language model designed to facilitate region-level comprehension for both images and videos. To achieve consistent region representation across spatio-temporal dimensions, we introduce Token Mark, a set of tokens highlighting the target regions within the visual feature space. These tokens are directly embedded into spatial regions using region prompts (e.g., boxes or masks) and simultaneously incorporated into the text prompt to specify the target, establishing a direct connection between visual and text tokens. To further support robust video understanding without requiring tracklets, we introduce an auxiliary task that guides Token Mark by leveraging the consistency of the tokens, enabling stable region interpretation across the video. Additionally, we introduce a large-scale region-level video instruction dataset (RegVID-300k). Incorporating cells within active biomaterial scaffolds is a promising strategy to develop forefront materials that can autonomously sense, respond, and alter the scaffold in response to environmental cues or internal cell circuitry. Using dynamic biocompatible scaffolds that can self-alter their properties via crosslinking and motor-driven force-generation opens even greater avenues for actuation and control. However, the design principles associated with engineering active scaffolds embedded with cells are not well established. To address this challenge, we design a dynamic scaffold material of bacteria cells embedded within a composite cytoskeletal network of actin and microtubules that can be passively or actively crosslinked by either biotin-streptavidin or multimeric kinesin motors. Using quantitative microscopy, we demonstrate the ability to embed cells of volume fractions 0.4 to 2% throughout the network without compromising the structural integrity of the network or inhibiting crosslinking or motor-driven dynamics. Our findings suggest that both passive and active crosslinking promote entrainment of cells within the network, while depletion interactions play a more important role in uncrosslinked networks. Moreover, we show that large-scale structures emerge with the addition of cell fractions as low as 0.4%, but these structures do not influence the microscale structural lengthscale of the materials. Our work highlights the potential of our composite biomaterial in designing autonomous materials controlled by cells, and provides a roadmap for effectively coupling cells to complex composite materials with an eye towards using cells as in situ factories to program material modifications.

ML and HPC applications increasingly combine dense and sparse memory access computations to maximize storage efficiency. However, existing CPUs and GPUs struggle to flexibly handle these heterogeneous workloads with consistently high compute efficiency. We present Occamy, a 432-Core, 768-DP-GFLOP/s, dual-HBM2E, dual-chiplet RISC-V system with a latency-tolerant hierarchical interconnect and in-core streaming units (SUs) designed to accelerate dense and sparse FP8-to-FP64 ML and HPC workloads. We implement Occamy's compute chiplets in 12 nm FinFET, and its passive interposer, Hedwig, in a 65 nm node. On dense linear algebra (LA), Occamy achieves a competitive FPU utilization of 89%. On stencil codes, Occamy reaches an FPU utilization of 83% and a technology-node-normalized compute density of 11.1 DP-GFLOP/s/mm2,leading state-of-the-art (SoA) processors by 1.7x and 1.2x, respectively. On sparse-dense linear algebra (LA), it achieves 42% FPU utilization and a normalized compute density of 5.95 DP-GFLOP/s/mm2, surpassing the SoA by 5.2x and 11x, respectively. On, sparse-sparse LA, Occamy reaches a throughput of up to 187 GCOMP/s at 17.4 GCOMP/s/W and a compute density of 3.63 GCOMP/s/mm2. Finally, we reach up to 75% and 54% FPU utilization on and dense (LLM) and graph-sparse (GCN) ML inference workloads. AI Agent, powered by large language models (LLMs) as its cognitive core, is an intelligent agentic system capable of autonomously controlling and determining the execution paths under user's instructions. With the burst of capabilities of LLMs and various plugins, such as RAG, text-to-image/video/3D, etc., the potential of AI Agents has been vastly expanded, with their capabilities growing stronger by the day. However, at the intersection between AI and web3, there is currently no ideal agentic framework that can seamlessly integrate web3 applications into AI agent functionalities. In this paper, we propose Eliza, the first open-source web3-friendly Agentic framework that makes the deployment of web3 applications effortless. We emphasize that every aspect of Eliza is a regular Typescript program under the full control of its user, and it seamlessly integrates with web3 (i.e., reading and writing blockchain data, interacting with smart contracts, etc.). Furthermore, we show how stable performance is achieved through the pragmatic implementation of the key components of Eliza's runtime. Prompt compression is a promising approach to speeding up language model inference without altering the generative model. Prior works compress prompts into smaller sequences of learned tokens using an encoder that is trained as a LowRank Adaptation (LoRA) of the inference language model. However, we show that the encoder does not need to keep the original language model's architecture to achieve useful compression. We introduce the Attention-Only Compressor (AOC), which learns a prompt compression encoder after removing the multilayer perceptron (MLP) layers in the Transformer blocks of a language model, resulting in an encoder with roughly 67% less parameters compared to the original model. Intriguingly we find that, across a range of compression ratios up to 480x, AOC can better regenerate prompts and outperform a baseline compression encoder that is a LoRA of the inference language model without removing MLP layers. These results demonstrate that the architecture of prompt compression encoders does not need to be identical to that of the original decoder language model, paving the way for further research into architectures and approaches for prompt compression., Comment: 7 pages, 0 figures

A study is presented of $B^+ \to K^0_{\rm S} K^- \pi^+ K^-$ and $B^+ \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ \pi^- K^+$ decays based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9 fb^{-1}$. The $K^0_{\rm S} K \pi$ invariant-mass distributions of both $B^+$ decay modes show, in the $m(K^0_{\rm S} K \pi)<1.85$ GeV mass region, a rich spectrum of light-meson resonances, resolved using an amplitude analysis. A complex mixture of $J^{PC}=0^{-+}, 1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$ resonances is observed, dominated by $\eta(1405)$, $\eta(1470)$, $\eta(1760)$, $f_1(1285)$, $f_1(1420)$ and $h_1(1405)$ resonances. The $K^0_{\rm S} K \pi$ Dalitz plots are dominated by asymmetric crossing $K^* \bar K$ bands which are different for the two $B^+$ decay modes. This is due to a different interference pattern between the $1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$ amplitudes in the two channels. This research examines the congruence between neural activity and advanced transformer models, emphasizing the semantic significance of punctuation in text understanding. Utilizing an innovative approach originally proposed by Toneva and Wehbe, we evaluate four advanced transformer models RoBERTa, DistiliBERT, ALBERT, and ELECTRA against neural activity data. Our findings indicate that RoBERTa exhibits the closest alignment with neural activity, surpassing BERT in accuracy. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of punctuation removal on model performance and neural alignment, revealing that BERT's accuracy enhances in the absence of punctuation. This study contributes to the comprehension of how neural networks represent language and the influence of punctuation on semantic processing within the human brain.

In recent years, several text-to-speech systems have been proposed to synthesize natural speech in zero-shot, few-shot, and low-resource scenarios. However, these methods typically require training with data from many different speakers. The speech quality across the speaker set typically is diverse and imposes an upper limit on the quality achievable for the low-resource speaker. In the current work, we achieve high-quality speech synthesis using as little as five minutes of speech from the desired speaker by augmenting the low-resource speaker data with noise and employing multiple sampling techniques during training. Our method requires only four high-quality, high-resource speakers, which are easy to obtain and use in practice. Our low-complexity method achieves improved speaker similarity compared to the state-of-the-art zero-shot method HierSpeech++ and the recent low-resource method AdapterMix while maintaining comparable naturalness. Learning the structure of Bayesian networks from data provides insights into underlying processes and the causal relationships that generate the data, but its usefulness depends on the homogeneity of the data population, a condition often violated in real-world applications. In such cases, using a single network structure for inference can be misleading, as it may not capture sub-population differences. To address this, we propose a novel approach of modelling a mixture of Bayesian networks where component probabilities depend on individual characteristics. Our method identifies both network structures and demographic predictors of sub-population membership, aiding personalised interventions. We evaluate our method through simulations and a youth mental health case study, demonstrating its potential to improve tailored interventions in health, education, and social policy.

We show the first use of generative transformers for generating calorimeter showers as point clouds in a high-granularity calorimeter. Using the tokenizer and generative part of the OmniJet-${\alpha}$ model, we represent the hits in the detector as sequences of integers. This model allows variable-length sequences, which means that it supports realistic shower development and does not need to be conditioned on the number of hits. Since the tokenization represents the showers as point clouds, the model learns the geometry of the showers without being restricted to any particular voxel grid.

Studying exoplanet atmospheres is essential for assessing their potential to host liquid water and their capacity to support life (their habitability). Each atmosphere uniquely influences the likelihood of surface liquid water, defining the habitable zone (HZ), the region around a star where liquid water can exist. However, being within the HZ does not guarantee habitability, as life requires more than just liquid water. In this study, we adopted a two-pronged approach. First, we estimated the surface conditions of planets near the HZ's inner edge under various atmospheric compositions. By utilizing a 3D climate model, we refined the inner boundaries of the HZ for planets with atmospheres dominated by H2 and CO2 for the first time. Second, we investigated microbial survival in these environments, conducting laboratory experiments on the growth and survival of E. coli K-12, focusing on the impact of different gas compositions. This innovative combination of climate modeling and biological experiments bridges theoretical climate predictions with biological outcomes. We report the confirmation and characterization of four hot Jupiter-type exoplanets initially detected by TESS: TOI-1295 b, TOI-2580 b, TOI-6016 b, and TOI-6130 b. Using observations with the high-resolution echelle spectrograph MaHPS on the 2.1m telescope at Wendelstein Observatory, together with NEID at Kitt Peak National Observatory and TRES at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, we confirmed the planetary nature of these four planet candidates. We also performed precise mass measurements. All four planets are found to be hot Jupiters with orbital periods between 2.4 and 4.0 days. The sizes of these planets range from 1.29 to 1.64 Jupiter radii, while their masses range from 0.6 to 1.5 Jupiter masses. Additionally, we investigated whether there are signs of other planets in the systems but have found none. Lastly, we compared the radii of our four objects to the results of an empirical study of radius inflation and see that all four demonstrate a good fit with the current models. These four planets belong to the first array of planets confirmed with MaHPS data, supporting the ability of the spectrograph to detect planets around fainter stars as faint as V=12.

The confinement of electromagnetic radiation within extremely small volumes offers an effective means to significantly enhance light-matter interactions, to the extent that zero-point quantum vacuum fluctuations can influence and control the properties of materials. Here, we develop a theoretical framework for the quantum electrodynamics of graphene Landau levels embedded in a deep subwavelength hyperbolic cavity, where light is confined into ultrasmall mode volumes. By studying the spectrum, we discuss the emergence of polaritons, and disentangle the contributions of resonant quantum vacuum effects from those of purely electrostatic interactions. Today, there is no clear legal test for regulating the use of variables that proxy for race and other protected classes and classifications. This Article develops such a test. Decision tools that use proxies are narrowly tailored when they exhibit the weakest total proxy power. The test is necessarily comparative. Thus, if two algorithms predict loan repayment or university academic performance with identical accuracy rates, but one uses zip code and the other does not, then the second algorithm can be said to have deployed a more equitable means for achieving the same result as the first algorithm. Scenarios in which two algorithms produce comparable and non-identical results present a greater challenge. This Article suggests that lawmakers can develop caps to permissible proxy power over time, as courts and algorithm builders learn more about the power of variables. Finally, the Article considers who should bear the burden of producing less discriminatory alternatives and suggests plaintiffs remain in the best position to keep defendants honest - so long as testing data is made available.

We report the discovery and characterization of two sub-Saturns from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) using high-resolution spectroscopic observations from the MaHPS spectrograph at the Wendelstein Observatory and the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Haute-Provence Observatory. Combining photometry from TESS, KeplerCam, LCOGT, and MuSCAT2 with the radial velocity measurements from MaHPS and SOPHIE we measure precise radii and masses for both planets. TOI-5108 b is a sub-Saturn with a radius of $6.6 \pm 0.1$ $R_\oplus$ and a mass of $32 \pm 5$ $M_\oplus$. TOI-5786 b is similar to Saturn with a radius of $8.54 \pm 0.13$ $R_\oplus$ and a mass of $73 \pm 9$ $M_\oplus$. The host star for TOI-5108 b is a moderately bright (Vmag 9.75) G-type star. TOI-5786 is a slightly dimmer (Vmag 10.2) F-type star. Both planets are close to their host stars with periods of 6.75 days and 12.78 days respectively. This puts TOI-5108 b just inside the bounds of the Neptune desert while TOI-5786 b is right above the upper edge. We estimate hydrogen-helium envelope mass fractions of $38 \%$ for TOI-5108 b and $74 \% $ for TOI-5786 b. However, using a model for the interior structure that includes tidal effects the envelope fraction of TOI-5108 b could be much lower ($\sim 20\,\%$) depending on the obliquity. We estimate mass-loss rates between 1.0 * $10^9$ g/s and 9.8 * $10^9$ g/s for TOI-5108 b and between 3.6 * $10^8$ g/s and 3.5 * $10^9$ g/s for TOI-5786 b. Given their masses, this means that both planets are stable against photoevaporation. We also detect a transit signal for a second planet candidate in the TESS data of TOI-5786 with a period of 6.998 days and a radius of $3.83 \pm 0.16$ $R_\oplus$. Using our RV data and photodynamical modeling, we are able to provide a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit of 26.5 $M_\oplus$ for the mass of the potential inner companion to TOI-5786 b., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures. Neural speech editing advancements have raised concerns about their misuse in spoofing attacks. Traditional partially edited speech corpora primarily focus on cut-and-paste edits, which, while maintaining speaker consistency, often introduce detectable discontinuities. Recent methods, like A\textsuperscript{3}T and Voicebox, improve transitions by leveraging contextual information. To foster spoofing detection research, we introduce the Speech INfilling Edit (SINE) dataset, created with Voicebox. We detailed the process of re-implementing Voicebox training and dataset creation. Subjective evaluations confirm that speech edited using this novel technique is more challenging to detect than conventional cut-and-paste methods. Despite human difficulty, experimental results demonstrate that self-supervised-based detectors can achieve remarkable performance in detection, localization, and generalization across different edit methods. Asymptotic Safety constitutes a promising mechanism for a consistent and predictive high-energy completion of the gravitational interactions. To date, most results on the interacting renormalization group fixed point underlying the construction are obtained for Euclidean signature spacetimes. In this work, we use the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) decomposition of the metric degrees of freedom and investigate the relations between the Euclidean and Lorentzian renormalization group flows resulting from the analytic continuation of the lapse function. We discuss the general conditions which guarantee the equivalence of the beta functions. These insights are illustrated based on the flow of the graviton two-point function within the Einstein-Hilbert truncation, demonstrating agreement of the Euclidean and Lorentzian settings. Hence the UV- and IR-completions identified in the Euclidean case are robust when changing spacetime signature. We take this as an important indicator that the Euclidean asymptotic safety mechanism carries over to Lorentzian signature spacetimes., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

If a crash between two vehicles is imminent, an Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) is activated to avoid or mitigate the accident. However, the trigger mechanism of the AEB relies on the vehicle's onboard sensors, such as radar and cameras, that require a line of sight to detect the crash opponent. If the line of sight is impaired, for example by bad weather or an obstruction, the AEB cannot be activated in time to avoid the crash. To deal with these cases, a 2-stage braking system is proposed, where the first stage consists of a partial brake that is triggered by Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. The second stage is composed of the standard AEB that is triggered exclusively by an onboard sensor detection. The performance of this V2X-enhanced 2-stage braking system is analysed in obstructed crossing use cases and the results are compared against the use of an AEB-only system. The benefit is quantitatively assessed by determination of the crash avoidance rate and, if the crash cannot be avoided, by estimation of the crash severity mitigation.

Foundation models have become popular in forecasting due to their ability to make accurate predictions, even with minimal fine-tuning on specific datasets. In this paper, we demonstrate how the newly released regression variant of TabPFN, a general tabular foundation model, can be applied to time series forecasting. We propose a straightforward approach, TabPFN-TS, which pairs TabPFN with simple feature engineering to achieve strong forecasting performance. Despite its simplicity and with only 11M parameters, TabPFN-TS outperforms Chronos-Mini, a model of similar size, and matches or even slightly outperforms Chronos-Large, which has 65-fold more parameters. A key strength of our method lies in its reliance solely on artificial data during pre-training, avoiding the need for large training datasets and eliminating the risk of benchmark contamination.

Large-area quantum networks based on optical fibers allow photons at near-infrared wavelengths to travel with minimal loss. Quantum frequency conversion is a method to alter the wavelength of a single photon while maintaining its quantum state. Most commonly, nonlinear crystals are employed for this conversion process, where near-unity conversion efficiency at high fidelity has been demonstrated. Still, the crystal-based conversion process is plagued by strong background noise, very limited spectral bandwidth, and inhomogeneous temperature profiles at strong pump fields. In previous work, we have demonstrated frequency conversion in hydrogen-filled hollow-core fibers and claimed that this conversion process does not compromise performance at strong pump fields, is essentially free of background noise, and intrinsically broadband. Anisotropic X-ray Dark-Field Tomography (AXDT) is a novel imaging technology that enables the extraction of fiber structures on the micrometer scale, far smaller than standard X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) setups. Directional and structural information is relevant in medical diagnostics and material testing. Compared to existing solutions, AXDT could prove a viable alternative. Reconstruction methods in AXDT have so far been driven by practicality. Improved methods could make AXDT more accessible. We contribute numerically stable implementations and validation of advanced statistical reconstruction methods that incorporate the statistical noise behavior of the imaging system. We further provide a new statistical reconstruction formulation that retains the advanced noise assumptions of the imaging setup while being efficient and easy to optimize. Finally, we provide a detailed analysis of the optimization behavior for all models regarding AXDT. Our experiments show that statistical reconstruction outperforms the previously used model, and particularly the noise performance is superior. While the previously proposed statistical method is effective, it is computationally expensive, and our newly proposed formulation proves highly efficient with identical performance. Our theoretical analysis opens the possibility to new and more advanced reconstruction algorithms, which in turn enable future research in AXDT.

Training transformer-based encoder-decoder models for long document summarization poses a significant challenge due to the quadratic memory consumption during training. Several approaches have been proposed to extend the input length at test time, but training with these approaches is still difficult, requiring truncation of input documents and causing a mismatch between training and test conditions. In this work, we propose CachED (Gradient $\textbf{Cach}$ing for $\textbf{E}$ncoder-$\textbf{D}$ecoder models), an approach that enables end-to-end training of existing transformer-based encoder-decoder models, using the entire document without truncation. Specifically, we apply non-overlapping sliding windows to input documents, followed by fusion in decoder. During backpropagation, the gradients are cached at the decoder and are passed through the encoder in chunks by re-computing the hidden vectors, similar to gradient checkpointing. In the experiments on long document summarization, we extend BART to CachED BART, processing more than 500K tokens during training and achieving superior performance without using any additional parameters.

The compact hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta(p,q,r)$ admits a canonical representation to $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbf{R})$ with discrete image which is unique up to conjugation. The trace field of this representation is \[K = \mathbf{Q}(\cos(\pi/p), \cos(\pi/q), \cos(\pi/r)).\] We prove that there are exactly eleven such groups which are conjugate to subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(K)$. Moreover, we prove that there are no additional compact hyperbolic triangle groups which are conjugate to subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(L)$ for any totally real field $L$. Photon-pair sources are widely used in quantum optics and quantum information experiments. Despite their broad deployment, there has not yet been an on-demand implementation with efficient into-fiber photon generation and high single-photon purity. Here we report on such a source based on a single atom with three energy levels in ladder configuration and coupled to two optical fiber cavities. We efficiently generate photon pairs with in-fiber emission efficiency of $\eta_{\mathrm{pair}}=16(1)\%$ and study their temporal correlation properties. We simulate theoretically a regime with strong atom-cavity coupling and find that photons are directly emitted from the ground state, i.e. without atomic population in any intermediate state. Historical maps are valuable resources that capture detailed geographical information from the past. However, these maps are typically available in printed formats, which are not conducive to modern computer-based analyses. Digitizing these maps into a machine-readable format enables efficient computational analysis. In this paper, we propose an automated approach to digitization using deep-learning-based semantic segmentation, which assigns a semantic label to each pixel in scanned historical maps. A key challenge in this process is the lack of ground-truth annotations required for training deep neural networks, as manual labeling is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address this issue, we introduce a weakly-supervised age-tracing strategy for model fine-tuning. This approach exploits the similarity in appearance and land-use patterns between historical maps from neighboring time periods to guide the training process. Specifically, model predictions for one map are utilized as pseudo-labels for training on maps from adjacent time periods. Experiments conducted on our newly curated \textit{Hameln} dataset demonstrate that the proposed age-tracing strategy significantly enhances segmentation performance compared to baseline models. In the best-case scenario, the mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) achieved 77.3\%, reflecting an improvement of approximately 20\% over baseline methods. Additionally, the fine-tuned model achieved an average overall accuracy of 97\%, highlighting the effectiveness of our approach for digitizing historical maps.

In this article, we construct unique strong solutions to a class of stochastic Volterra differential equations driven by a singular drift vector field and a Wiener noise. Further, we examine the Sobolev differentiability of the strong solution with respect to its initial value.

We investigate minimal replicator systems that are able to use information in a functional manner. Specifically, we consider a population of autocatalytic replicators in a flow reactor, subject to fluctuating environments. We derive operational bounds on replicators production in terms of information-theoretic quantities, reflecting contributions from environmental uncertainty, side information, and distribution mismatch. We also derive the optimal strategy, expressed as a function of both intrinsic replicator parameters and environmental statistics. We compare and contrast our findings with existing information-theoretic formalisms such as Kelly gambling. The results are illustrated on a model of real-world self-assembled molecular replicators. For this system, we demonstrate the benefit of internal memory in environments with temporal correlations, and we propose a plausible experimental setup for detecting the signature of functional information. Timestamps play a pivotal role in digital forensic event reconstruction, but due to their non-essential nature, tampering or manipulation of timestamps is possible by users in multiple ways, even on running systems. This has a significant effect on the reliability of the results from applying a timeline analysis as part of an investigation. In this paper, we investigate the problem of users tampering with timestamps on a running (``live'') system. While prior work has shown that digital evidence tampering is hard, we focus on the question of \emph{why} this is so. By performing a qualitative user study with advanced university students, we observe, for example, a commonly applied multi-step approach in order to deal with second-order traces (traces of traces). We also derive factors that influence the reliability of successful tampering, such as the individual knowledge about temporal traces, and technical restrictions to change them. These insights help to assess the reliability of timestamps from individual artifacts that are relied on for event reconstruction and subsequently reduce the risk of incorrect event reconstruction during investigations.

We introduce a novel method for proving ergodicity for skew products of interval exchange transformations (IETs) with piecewise smooth cocycles having singularities at the ends of exchanged intervals. This approach is inspired by Borel-Cantelli-type arguments from Fayad and Lema\'nczyk (2006). The key innovation of our method lies in its applicability to singularities beyond the logarithmic type, whereas previous techniques were restricted to logarithmic singularities. Our approach is particularly effective for proving the ergodicity of skew products for symmetric IETs and antisymmetric cocycles. Moreover, its most significant advantage is its ability to study the equidistribution of error terms in the spectral decomposition of Birkhoff integrals for locally Hamiltonian flows on compact surfaces, applicable not only when all saddles are perfect (harmonic) but also in the case of some non-perfect saddles., Comment: 47 pages, 6 figures

We present Plancraft, a multi-modal evaluation dataset for LLM agents. Plancraft has both a text-only and multi-modal interface, based on the Minecraft crafting GUI. We include the Minecraft Wiki to evaluate tool use and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), as well as an oracle planner and oracle RAG information extractor, to ablate the different components of a modern agent architecture. To evaluate decision-making, Plancraft also includes a subset of examples that are intentionally unsolvable, providing a realistic challenge that requires the agent not only to complete tasks but also to decide whether they are solvable at all. We benchmark both open-source and closed-source LLMs and strategies on our task and compare their performance to a handcrafted planner. We find that LLMs and VLMs struggle with the planning problems that Plancraft introduces, and we offer suggestions on how to improve their capabilities.

We compute the Hilbert series of the space of $n=3$ variable quasi-invariant polynomials in characteristic $2$ and $3,$ capturing the dimension of the homogeneous components of the space, and explicitly describe the generators in the characteristic $2$ case. In doing so we extend the work of the first author in 2023 on quasi-invariant polynomials in characteristic $p>n$ and prove that a sufficient condition found by Ren-Xu in 2020 on when the Hilbert series differs between characteristic $0$ and $p$ is also necessary for $n=3,p=2,3$. This is the first description of quasi-invariant polynomials in the case where the space forms a modular representation over the symmetric group, bringing us closer to describing the quasi-invariant polynomials in all characteristics and numbers of variables., Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure

We investigate conditional McKean-Vlasov equations driven by time-space white noise, motivated by the propagation of chaos in an N-particle system with space-time Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamics. The framework builds on the stochastic calculus of time-space white noise, utilizing tools such as the two-parameter Ito formula, Malliavin calculus, and orthogonal decompositions to analyze convergence and stochastic properties. Existence and uniqueness of solutions for the associated stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) are rigorously established. Additionally, an integral stochastic Fokker-Planck equation is derived for the conditional law, employing Fourier transform methods and stochastic analysis in the plane.
