Tuberculosis (TB) is the most important zoonotic bacterial disease in nonhuman primates (NHP). The current diagnostic method, the intradermal palpebral tuberculin test, has serious shortcomings. We characterized antibody responses in NHP againstMycobacterium tuberculosisto identify immunodominant antigens and develop a rapid serodiagnostic test for TB. A total of 422 NHP were evaluated, including 243 rhesus (Macaca mulatta), 46 cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis), and 133 African green (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) monkeys at five collaborative centers. Of those, 50 monkeys of the three species were experimentally inoculated withM. tuberculosis. Antibody responses were monitored every 2 to 4 weeks for up to 8 months postinfection by MultiAntigen Print ImmunoAssay with a panel of 12 recombinant antigens. All of the infected monkeys produced antibodies at various levels and with different antigen recognition patterns. ESAT-6 and MPB83 were the most frequently recognized proteins during infection. A combination of selected antigens which detected antibodies in all of the infected monkeys was designed to develop the PrimaTB STAT-PAK assay by lateral-flow technology. Serological evaluation demonstrated high diagnostic sensitivity (90%) and specificity (99%). The highest rate of TB detection was achieved when the skin test was combined with the PrimaTB STAT-PAK kit. This novel immunoassay provides a simple, rapid, and accurate test for TB in NHP.

The investigation of physiologic concomitants of disturbed behavior has been of interest for many years. In particular, the use of the EEG has been emphasized since the days of Hans Berger, and some meaningful correlations have been made in the case of "psychopathic" or aggressive behavior disorders. The value of the EEG in recognizing epilepsy and epileptic equivalents is common knowledge. However, in spite of much work on psychosis and a fairly widespread agreement that there is a "higher incidence" of EEG abnormalities in hospitalized psychotic patients than in the general population, little other meaningful correlation has been noted. Interest in this subject has been renewed in recent years by the description of subcortical electrophysiologic abnormalities in psychotic patients by Heath, Sem-Jacobsen, Delgado, and others. Recent advances in recording technique have reawakened interest in the interrelationship of electroencephalographically detectable cerebral activity and both normal and abnormal behavior. Much of this attention has centered about dysfunction of the temporal lobe and its subcortical connections in regard to disordered behavior. In particular, Heath and associates 13 have reported a specific electrophysiologic abnormality in these brain areas in schizophrenia. An interest in temporal lobe disorders has also been fostered by the study of psychical seizures, which have long been of clinical importance because of their similarity to psychotic states. Gibbs 7 and Hill 8 have emphasized the incidence of personality disorders in temporal lobe dysfunction, and Hill has called attention to the presence, in such patients, of "episodic behavior" other than epilepsy, i. e., acute catatonic states and impulsive emotionality. MANY COMPLICATIONS of the administration of isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide; and INH) and related compounds in man have been reported, but relatively few toxic psychoses have been described. We are reporting five cases seen at Charity Hospital of Louisiana, at New Orleans, in which such reactions developed while under treatment with isoniazid or iproniazid (IPH) in combination with other antituberculous drugs.
