1. An eye-tracking-with-EEG coregistration corpus of narrative sentences

29 augustus 2023, Item does not contain fulltext, We present the Radboud Coregistration Corpus of Narrative Sentences (RaCCooNS), the first freely available corpus of eye-tracking-with-EEG data collected while participants read narrative sentences in Dutch. The corpus is intended for studying human sentence comprehension and for evaluating the cognitive validity of computational language models. RaCCooNS contains data from 37 participants (3 of which eye tracking only) reading 200 Dutch sentences each. Less predictable words resulted in significantly longer reading times and larger N400 sizes, replicating well-known surprisal effects in eye tracking and EEG simultaneously. We release the raw eye-tracking data, the preprocessed eye-tracking data at the fixation, word, and trial levels, the raw EEG after merger with eye-tracking data, and the preprocessed EEG data both before and after ICA-based ocular artifact correction.

In Dutch you would say that everyone was eating his lunch (‘iedereen was zijn lunch aan het eten’), even if the group consisted of men as well as women. This use of masculine words for generic reference was at the core of this dissertation. A series of experiments tested if Dutch masculine pronouns such as zijn ‘his’ and hij ‘he’ lead to a male bias during reading, even though they are intended to be interpreted generically. In other words, do we think of the group of people eating their lunch as predominantly male? Three eye-tracking experiments and one sentence evaluation experiment tested if the possessive pronoun zijn ‘his’ lead to a male bias. The results showed that men often experience a male bias, but women do not. A self-paced reading experiment testing generically-intended hij ‘he’ revealed a male bias for both women and men. These five experiments taken together show that the generic or “gender-neutral” use of masculine pronouns often makes only men visible and excludes others. A sixth experiment sheds light on a different context in which zijn ‘his’ is used to refer to women. The pronoun can be used to refer to women beyond generic contexts in the Limburgian dialect spoken in the Netherlands. For example, a sentence such as Mary is eating his lunch can mean that Mary is eating her own lunch in Limburgian. An acceptability judgement task showed that this interpretation is indeed possible in Limburgian, but not in Dutch.

Abstract

We present the Narrative Brain Dataset, an fMRI dataset that was collected during spoken presentation of short excerpts of three stories in Dutch. Together with the brain imaging data, the dataset contains the written versions of the stimulation texts. The texts are accompanied with stochastic (perplexity and entropy) and semantic computational linguistic measures. The richness and unconstrained nature of the data allows the study of language processing in the brain in a more naturalistic setting than is common for fMRI studies. We hope that by making NBD available we serve the double purpose of providing useful neural data to researchers interested in natural language processing in the brain and to further stimulate data sharing in the field of neuroscience of language.

Abstract

Opinionated Natural Language Generation (ONLG) is a new, challenging, task that aims to automatically generate human-like, subjective, responses to opinionated articles online. We present a data-driven architecture for ONLG that generates subjective responses triggered by users’ agendas, consisting of topics and sentiments, and based on wide-coverage automatically-acquired generative grammars. We compare three types of grammatical representations that we design for ONLG, which interleave different layers of linguistic information and are induced from a new, enriched dataset we developed. Our evaluation shows that generation with Relational-Realizational (Tsarfaty and Sima’an, 2008) inspired grammar gets better language model scores than lexicalized grammars ‘a la Collins (2003), and that the latter gets better human-evaluation scores. We also show that conditioning the generation on topic models makes generated responses more relevant to the document content.

We track these three distinct streams of information in the brain by using stochastic measures derived from computational language models to detect neural correlates of phoneme, part-of-speech, and word processing in an fMRI experiment. Probabilistic language models have proven to be useful tools for studying how language is processed as a sequence of symbols unfolding in time. Conditional probabilities between sequences of words are at the basis of probabilistic measures such as surprisal and perplexity which have been successfully used as predictors of several behavioural and neural correlates of sentence processing. Here we computed perplexity from sequences of words and their parts of speech, and their phonemic transcriptions. Brain activity time-locked to each word is regressed on the three model-derived measures. We observe that the brain keeps track of the statistical structure of lexical, syntactic and phonological information in distinct areas.
