We conducted the MeerKAT Vela Supercluster survey, named Vela$-$HI, to bridge the gap between the Vela SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey (Vela$-$SMGPS, $-2^{\circ} \leq b \leq 1^{\circ}$), and optical and near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the Vela Supercluster (hereafter Vela$-$OPT/NIR) at $|b| \gtrsim 7^{\circ}$. Covering coordinates from $263^{\circ} \leq \ell \leq 284^{\circ}$ and $1^{\circ} \leq b \leq 6.2^{\circ}$ above, and $-6.7^{\circ} \leq b \leq -2^{\circ}$ below the Galactic Plane (GP), we sampled 667 fields spread across an area of ${\sim} \rm 242 ~deg^2$. With a beam size of ${\sim} 38'' \times 31''$, Vela$-$HI achieved a sensitivity of $\langle \rm rms \rangle = 0.74$ mJy beam$^{-1}$ at 44.3 km s$^{-1}$ velocity resolution over ${\sim}$67 hours of observations. We cataloged 719 galaxies, with only 211 (29%) previously documented in the literature, primarily through the HIZOA, 2MASX, and WISE databases. Among these known galaxies, only 66 had optical spectroscopic redshift information. We found marginal differences of less than one channel resolution for all galaxies in common between HIZOA and Vela$-$SMGPS, and a mean difference of $70 \pm 15$ km s$^{-1}$ between optical and HI velocities. Combining data from Vela$-$SMGPS, Vela$-$HI, and Vela$-$OPT/NIR confirmed the connection of the Hydra/Antlia filament across the GP and revealed a previously unknown diagonal wall at a heliocentric velocity range of $6500-8000$ km s$^{-1}$. Vela$-$HI reinforces the connection between the first wall at $18500-20000$ km s$^{-1}$ and the inner ZOA. The second wall seems to traverse the GP at $270^{\circ} \leq \ell \leq 279^{\circ}$, where it appears that both walls intersect, jointly covering the velocity range $18500-21500$ km s$^{-1}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, this version contains the full catalogue of detections

We conducted a search for HI emission of the gas-rich galaxies in the Vela region ($260^{\circ} \leq \ell \leq 290^{\circ}, -2^{\circ} \leq b \leq 1^{\circ}$) to explore the Vela Supercluster (VSCL) at $V_\mathrm{hel} \sim 18000$ km s$^{-1}$, largely obscured by Galactic dust. Within the mostly RFI-free band ($250 < V_\mathrm{hel} < 25000$ km s$^{-1}$) of MeerKAT, the analysis focuses on $157$ hexagonally distributed pointings extracted from the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey located in the Vela region (Vela$-$SMGPS). These were combined into 10 contiguous mosaics, covering a ${\sim}90$ deg$^2$ area. Among the $843$ HI detected sources, 39 were previously discovered in the Parkes HIZOA survey ($V_\mathrm{hel} < 12000$ km s$^{-1}$; rms $\sim 6$ mJy beam$^{-1}$). With the improved rms level of the Vela$-$SMGPS, i.e., $0.29 - 0.56$ mJy beam$^{-1}$, our study unveils nearly 12 times more detections (471 candidates) in that same velocity range. We furthermore could identify $187$ galaxy candidates with an HI mass limit reaching $\log (M_{\rm HI}/\rm M_{\odot}) = 9.44$ in the VSCL velocity range $V_\mathrm{hel} \sim 19500 \pm 3500$ km s$^{-1}$. We find indications of two wall-like overdensities that confirm the original suspicion that these walls intersect at low latitudes around longitudes of $\ell \sim 272^{\circ} - 278^{\circ}$. We also find a strong signature most likely associated with the Hydra/Antlia extension and evidence of a previously unknown narrow filament at $V_\mathrm{hel} \sim 12000$ km s$^{-1}$. We present the first measurement of HI mass of star-forming galaxies in different large scale structure environments from a blind survey at $z\sim 0.37$. In particular, we carry out a spectral line stacking analysis considering $2875$ spectra of colour-selected star-forming galaxies undetected in HI at $0.23 < z < 0.49$ in the COSMOS field, extracted from the MIGHTEE-HI Early Science datacubes, acquired with the MeerKAT radio telescope. We stack galaxies belonging to different subsamples depending on three different definitions of large scale structure environment: local galaxy overdensity, position inside the host dark matter halo (central, satellite, or isolated), and cosmic web type (field, filament, or knot). We first stack the full star-forming galaxy sample and find a robust HI detection yielding an average galaxy HI mass of $M_{\rm HI}=(8.12\pm 0.75)\times 10^9\, {\rm M}_\odot$ at $\sim 11.8\sigma$. Next, we investigate the different subsamples finding a negligible difference in $M_{\rm HI}$ as a function of the galaxy overdensity. We report an HI excess compared to the full sample in satellite galaxies ($M_{\rm HI}=(11.31\pm1.22)\times 10^9$, at $\sim 10.2 \sigma$) and in filaments ($M_{\rm HI}=(11.62\pm 0.90)\times 10^9$. Conversely, we report non-detections for the central and knot galaxies subsamples, which appear to be HI-deficient. We find the same qualitative results also when stacking in units of HI fraction ($f_{\rm HI}$). The Local Void is one of the nearest large voids, located at a distance of 23 Mpc. It lies largely behind the Galactic Bulge and is therefore extremely difficult to observe. We use HI 21 cm emission observations from the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey (SMGPS) to study the Local Void and its surroundings over the Galactic longitude range 329$^{\circ}< \ell <$ 55$^{\circ}$, Galactic latitude $|b| <$ 1.5$^{\circ}$, and redshift $cz <$ 7500 km/s. We have detected 291 galaxies to median rms sensitivity of 0.44 mJy per beam per 44 km/s channel. We find 17 galaxies deep inside the Void, 96 at the border of the Void, while the remaining 178 galaxies are in average density environments. The extent of the Void is ~ 58 Mpc. It is severely under-dense for the longitude range 350$^{\circ}< \ell <$ 35$^{\circ}$ up to redshift $z <$ 4500 km/s. The galaxies in the Void tend to have \HI masses that are lower (by approximately 0.25 dex) than their average density counterparts. We find several potential candidates for small groups of galaxies, of which two groups (with 3 members and 5 members) in the Void show signs of filamentary substructure within the Void., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 16 pages, 14 figures, Supplementary data are available online at MNRAS

This paper presents the first HI results extracted from the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey (SMGPS) $-$ a narrow strip ($b \sim 3^\circ$) along the southern Milky Way. The primary goal consisted in tracing the Great Attractor (GA) Wall across the innermost Zone of Avoidance. We reduced a segment spanning the longitude range $302^\circ \leq \ell \leq 332^\circ$ for the redshift range $z \leq 0.08$. The superb SMGPS sensitivity (rms = 0.3-0.5 mJy beam$^{-1}$ per 44 kms$^{-1}$ channel) and angular resolution ($\sim$ 31" $\times$ 26") lead to a detection limit of log$(M_{\rm HI}/$M$_\odot) \geq$ 8.5 at the GA distance ($V_{\rm hel} \sim 3500 - 6500$ kms$^{-1}$). A total of 477 galaxy candidates were identified over the full redshift range. A comparison of the few HI detections with counterparts in the literature (mostly HIZOA) found the HI fluxes and other HI parameters to be highly consistent. The continuation of the GA Wall is confirmed through a prominent overdensity of $N = 214$ detections in the GA distance range. At higher latitudes, the wall moves to higher redshifts, supportive of a possible link with the Ophiuchus cluster located behind the Galactic Bulge. This deep interferometric HI survey demonstrates the power of the SMGPS in improving our insight of large-scale structures at these extremely low latitudes, despite the high obscuration and continuum background., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, 2 appendices of 12 pages. We present the first measurement of the HI mass function (HIMF) using data from MeerKAT, based on 276 direct detections from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data covering a period of approximately a billion years ($0 \leq z \leq 0.084 $). This is the first HIMF measured using interferometric data over non-group or cluster field, i.e. a deep blank field. We constrain the parameters of the Schechter function which describes the HIMF with two different methods: $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ and Modified Maximum Likelihood (MML). We find a low-mass slope $\alpha=-1.29^{+0.37}_{-0.26}$, `knee' mass $\log_{10}(M_{*}/{\rm M_{\odot}}) = 10.07^{+0.24}_{-0.24}$ and normalisation $\log_{10}(\phi_{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.34^{+0.32}_{-0.36}$ ($H_0 = 67.4$ kms$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) for $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ and $\alpha=-1.44^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$, `knee' mass $\log_{10}(M_{*}/{\rm M_{\odot}}) = 10.22^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$ and normalisation $\log_{10}(\phi_{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.52^{+0.19}_{-0.14}$ for MML. When using $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ we find both the low-mass slope and `knee' mass to be consistent within $1\sigma$ with previous studies based on single-dish surveys. The cosmological mass density of HI is found to be slightly larger than previously reported: $\Omega_{\rm HI}=5.46^{+0.94}_{-0.99} \times 10^{-4}h^{-1}_{67.4}$ from $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ and $\Omega_{\rm HI}=6.31^{+0.31}_{-0.31} \times 10^{-4}h^{-1}_{67.4}$ from MML but consistent within the uncertainties. We study the $M_{\rm HI}-M_{\star}$ relation over the last billion years using the MIGHTEE-HI sample. We first model the upper envelope of the $M_{\rm HI}-M_{\star}$ relation with a Bayesian technique applied to a total number of 249 HI-selected galaxies, without binning the datasets, while taking account of the intrinsic scatter. We fit the envelope with both linear and non-linear models, and find that the non-linear model is preferred over the linear one with a measured transition stellar mass of $\log_{10}(M_\star$/$M_{\odot})$ = $9.15\pm0.87$, beyond which the slope flattens. This finding supports the view that the lack of HI gas is ultimately responsible for the decreasing star formation rate observed in the massive main-sequence galaxies. For spirals alone, which are biased towards the massive galaxies in our sample, the slope beyond the transition mass is shallower than for the full sample, indicative of distinct gas processes ongoing for the spirals/high-mass galaxies from other types with lower stellar masses. We then create mock catalogues for the MIGHTEE-HI detections and non-detections with two main galaxy populations of late- and early-type galaxies to measure the underlying $M_{\rm HI}-M_{\star}$ relation. We find that the turnover in this relation persists whether considering the two galaxy populations as a whole or separately. We note that an underlying linear relation could mimic this turnover in the observed scaling relation, but a model with a turnover is strongly preferred. We present the first measurements of HI galaxy scaling relations from a blind survey at $z>0.15$. We perform spectral stacking of 9023 spectra of star-forming galaxies undetected in HI at $0.23

In the local Universe, OH megamasers (OHMs) are detected almost exclusively in infrared-luminous galaxies, with a prevalence that increases with IR luminosity, suggesting that they trace gas-rich galaxy mergers. Given the proximity of the rest frequencies of OH and the hyperfine transition of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), radio surveys to probe the cosmic evolution of HI in galaxies also offer exciting prospects for exploiting OHMs to probe the cosmic history of gas-rich mergers. Using observations for the Looking At the Distant Universe with the MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) deep HI survey, we report the first untargeted detection of an OHM at $z > 0.5$, LADUMA J033046.20$-$275518.1 (nicknamed "Nkalakatha"). The host system, WISEA J033046.26$-$275518.3, is an infrared-luminous radio galaxy whose optical redshift $z \approx 0.52$ confirms the MeerKAT emission line detection as OH at a redshift $z_{\rm OH} = 0.5225 \pm 0.0001$ rather than HI at lower redshift. The detected spectral line has 18.4$\sigma$ peak significance, a width of $459 \pm 59\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, and an integrated luminosity of $(6.31 \pm 0.18\,{\rm [statistical]}\,\pm 0.31\,{\rm [systematic]}) \times 10^3\,L_\odot$, placing it among the most luminous OHMs known. The galaxy's far-infrared luminosity $L_{\rm FIR} = (1.576 \pm 0.013) \times 10^{12}\,L_\odot$ marks it as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy; its ratio of OH and infrared luminosities is similar to those for lower-redshift OHMs. A comparison between optical and OH redshifts offers a slight indication of an OH outflow. We present the observed HI size-mass relation of $204$ galaxies from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data. The high sensitivity of MeerKAT allows us to detect galaxies spanning more than 4 orders of magnitude in HI mass, ranging from dwarf galaxies to massive spirals, and including all morphological types. This is the first time the relation has been explored on a blind homogeneous data set which extends over a previously unexplored redshift range of $0 < z < 0.084$, i.e. a period of around one billion years in cosmic time. The sample follows the same tight logarithmic relation derived from previous work, between the diameter ($D_{\rm HI}$) and the mass ($M_{\rm HI}$) of HI discs. We measure a slope of $0.501\pm 0.008$, an intercept of $-3.252^{+0.073}_{-0.074}$, and an observed scatter of $0.057$ dex. For the first time, we quantify the intrinsic scatter of $0.054 \pm 0.003$ dex (${\sim} 10 \%$), which provides a constraint for cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and evolution. We derive the relation as a function of galaxy type and find that their intrinsic scatters and slopes are consistent within the errors. We also calculate the $D_{\rm HI} - M_{\rm HI}$ relation for two redshift bins and do not find any evidence for evolution with redshift. These results suggest that over a period of one billion years in lookback time, galaxy discs have not undergone significant evolution in their gas distribution and mean surface mass density, indicating a lack of dependence on both morphological type and redshift., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using a sample of 67 galaxies from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data we study the HI-based baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (bTFr), covering a period of $\sim$one billion years ($0 \leq z \leq 0.081 $). We consider the bTFr based on two different rotational velocity measures: the width of the global HI profile and $\rm V_{out}$, measured as the outermost rotational velocity from the resolved HI rotation curves. Both relations exhibit very low intrinsic scatter orthogonal to the best-fit relation ($\sigma_{\perp}=0.07\pm0.01$), comparable to the SPARC sample at $z \simeq 0$. The slopes of the relations are similar and consistent with the $ z \simeq 0$ studies ($3.66^{+0.35}_{-0.29}$ for $\rm W_{50}$ and $3.47^{+0.37}_{-0.30}$ for $\rm V_{out}$). We find no evidence that the bTFr has evolved over the last billion years, and all galaxies in our sample are consistent with the same relation independent of redshift and the rotational velocity measure. We present a novel 2D flux density model for observed HI emission lines combined with a Bayesian stacking technique to measure the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation below the nominal detection threshold. We simulate a galaxy catalogue, which includes HI lines described either with Gaussian or busy function profiles, and HI data cubes with a range of noise and survey areas similar to the MeerKAT International Giga-Hertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. With prior knowledge of redshifts, stellar masses and inclinations of spiral galaxies, we find that our model can reconstruct the input baryonic Tully-Fisher parameters (slope and zero point) most accurately in a relatively broad redshift range from the local Universe to $z = 0.3$ for all the considered levels of noise and survey areas, and up to $z = 0.55$ for a nominal noise of $90\,\mu$Jy/channel over 5 deg$^{2}$. Our model can also determine the $M_{\rm HI} - M_{\star}$ relation for spiral galaxies beyond the local Universe, and account for the detailed shape of the HI emission line, which is crucial for understanding the dynamics of spiral galaxies. Thus, we have developed a Bayesian stacking technique for measuring the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for galaxies at low stellar and/or HI masses and/or those at high redshift, where the direct detection of HI requires prohibitive exposure times., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. We present the serendipitous discovery of a galaxy group in the XMM-LSS field with MIGHTEE Early Science observations. Twenty galaxies are detected in HI in this $z\sim0.044$ group, with a $3\sigma$ column density sensitivity of $N_\mathrm{HI} = 1.6\times10^{20}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. This group has not been previously identified, despite residing in a well-studied extragalactic legacy field. We present spatially-resolved HI total intensity and velocity maps for each of the objects, which reveal environmental influence through disturbed morphologies. The group has a dynamical mass of $\log_{10}(M_\mathrm{dyn}/\mathrm{M}_\odot) = 12.32$, and is unusually gas-rich, with an HI-to-stellar mass ratio of $\log_{10}(f_\mathrm{HI}^\mathrm{*}) = -0.2$, which is 0.7 dex greater than expected. The group's high HI content, spatial, velocity, and identified galaxy type distributions strongly suggest that it is in the early stages of its assembly. The discovery of this galaxy group is an example of the importance of mapping spatially-resolved HI in a wide range of environments, including galaxy groups. We present the HI emission project within the MIGHTEE survey, currently being carried out with the newly commissioned MeerKAT radio telescope. This is one of the first deep, blind, medium-wide interferometric surveys for neutral hydrogen (HI) ever undertaken, extending our knowledge of HI emission to z=0.6. The science goals of this medium-deep, medium-wide survey are extensive, including the evolution of the neutral gas content of galaxies over the past 5 billion years. Intensity mapping (IM) with neutral hydrogen is a promising avenue to probe the large scale structure of the Universe. In this paper, we demonstrate that using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope as a connected interferometer, it is possible to make a statistical detection of HI in the post-reionization Universe. With the MIGHTEE (MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration) survey project observing in the L-band ($856 < \nu < 1712$ MHz, $z < 0.66$), we can achieve the required sensitivity to measure the HI IM power spectrum on quasi-linear scales, which will provide an important complementarity to the single-dish IM MeerKAT observations. We present a purpose-built simulation pipeline that emulates the MIGHTEE observations and forecast the constraints that can be achieved on the HI power spectrum at $z = 0.27$ for $k > 0.3$ $\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ using the foreground avoidance method. We present the power spectrum estimates with the current simulation on the COSMOS field that includes contributions from HI, noise and point source models constructed from the observed MIGHTEE data. The results from our \textit{visibility} based pipeline are in qualitative agreement to the already available MIGHTEE data. This paper demonstrates that MeerKAT can achieve very high sensitivity to detect HI with the full MIGHTEE survey on quasi-linear scales (signal-to-noise ratio $> 7$ at $k=0.49$ $\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$) which are instrumental in probing cosmological quantities such as the spectral index of fluctuation, constraints on warm dark matter, the quasi-linear redshift space distortions and the measurement of the HI content of the Universe up to $z\sim 0.5$., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Low-power radio sources dominate the radio sky. They tend to be small in size and core-dominated, but the origin of their properties and the evolution of their radio plasma are not well constrained. Interestingly, there is mounting evidence that low-power radio sources can significantly impact their surrounding gaseous medium and, therefore, may be more relevant for galaxy evolution than previously thought. In this paper, we present low radio frequency observations obtained with LOFAR at 147 MHz of the radio source hosted by NGC 3998. This is a rare example of a low-power source which is extremely core-dominated, but which has two large-scale lobes of low surface brightness. We combine the new 147 MHz image with available 1400 MHz data to derive the spectral index over the source. Despite the low surface brightness, reminiscent of remnant structures, the lobes show an optically thin synchrotron spectral index (~ 0.6). We interpret this as being due to rapid decollimation of the jets close to the core, to high turbulence of the plasma flow, and entrainment of thermal gas. This could be the result of intermittent activity of the central AGN, or, more likely, temporary disruption of the jet due to the interaction of the jet with the rich circumnuclear ISM. Both would result in sputtering energy injection from the core which would keep the lobes fed, albeit at a low rate. We discuss these results in connection with the properties of low-power radio sources in general. Our findings show that amorphous, low surface brightness lobes should not be interpreted, by default, as remnant structures. Large, deep surveys (in particular the LOFAR 150 MHz LoTSS and the recently started 1400 MHz Apertif survey) will identify a growing number of objects similar to NGC 3998 where these ideas can be further tested., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a Bayesian Stacking technique to directly measure the HI mass function (HIMF) and its evolution with redshift using galaxies formally below the nominal detection threshold. We generate galaxy samples over several sky areas given an assumed HIMF described by a Schechter function and simulate the HI emission lines with different levels of background noise to test the technique. We use Multinest to constrain the parameters of the HIMF in a broad redshift bin, demonstrating that the HIMF can be accurately reconstructed, using the simulated spectral cube far below the HI mass limit determined by the $5\sigma$ flux-density limit, i.e. down to $M_{\rm HI} = 10^{7.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ over the redshift range $0 < z < 0.55$ for this particular simulation, with a noise level similar to that expected for the MIGHTEE survey. We also find that the constraints on the parameters of the Schechter function, $\phi_{\star}$, $M_\star$ and $\alpha$ can be reliably fit, becoming tighter as the background noise decreases as expected, although the constraints on the redshift evolution are not significantly affected. All the parameters become better constrained as the survey area increases. In summary, we provide an optimal method for estimating the HI mass at cosmological distances that allows us to constrain the HI mass function below the detection threshold in forthcoming HI surveys. We study the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3998. This galaxy is known to host a low-power radio AGN with a kpc-size one-sided jet and a large, nearly polar HI disc. It is therefore a good system to study to understand the relation between the availability of cold-gas and the triggering of AGNs in galaxies. Our new WSRT data reveal two faint, S-shaped radio lobes extending out to $\sim$10 kpc from the galaxy centre. Remarkably, we find that the inner HI disc warps back towards the stellar mid-plane in a way that mirrors the warping of the radio lobes. We suggest that the polar HI disc was accreted through a minor merger, and that the torques causing it to warp in the inner regions are also responsible for feeding the AGN. The "S" shape of the radio lobes would then be due to the radio jets adapting to the changing angular momentum of the accreted gas. The extended radio jets are likely poorly collimated, which would explain their quick fading and, therefore, their rarity in galaxies similar to NGC 3998. The fuelling of the central super-massive black hole is likely occurring via "discrete events", suggested by the observed variability of the radio core and the extremely high core dominance, which we attribute to the formation and ejection of a new jet resulting from a recent fuelling event., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present CO velocity fields and rotation curves for a sample of nearby galaxies, based on data from the HERACLES survey. We combine our data with literature THINGS, SINGS and KINGFISH results to provide a comprehensive sample of mass models of disk galaxies inclusive of molecular gas. We compare the kinematics of the molecular (CO from HERACLES) and atomic (${\rm H{\scriptstyle I}}$ from THINGS) gas distributions to determine the extent to which CO may be used to probe the dynamics in the inner part of galaxies. In general, we find good agreement between the CO and ${\rm H{\scriptstyle I}}$ kinematics with small differences in the inner part of some galaxies. We add the contribution of the molecular gas to the mass models in our galaxies by using two different conversion factors $\mathrm{\alpha_{CO}}$ to convert CO luminosity to molecular gas mass surface density - the constant Milky Way value and the radially varying profiles determined in recent work based on THINGS, HERACLES and KINGFISH data. We study the relative effect that the addition of the molecular gas has upon the halo rotation curves for Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and the observationally motivated pseudo-isothermal halos. The contribution of the molecular gas varies for galaxies in our sample - for those galaxies where there is a substantial molecular gas content, using different values of $\mathrm{\alpha_{CO}}$ can result in significant differences to the relative contribution of the molecular gas and, hence, the shape of the dark matter halo rotation curves in the central regions of galaxies., Comment: 42 pages, 38 figures, accepted by AJ
