The purpose of this study is to determine (a) the patterns that existed in employment preparation courses offered by districts across a midwestern state and (b) the primary intent, primary method of instruction, and location of the classroom-based and work-based components of these courses. Findings indicated that (a) employment preparation offerings were limited, (b) career and technical education was the primary vehicle for delivering employment preparation, (c) the majority of employment preparation course work was offered in the classroom setting, (d) the intent of instruction for work-based-only courses was different from other delivery models, (e) the primary method of instruction in classroom-based-only courses was combined lecture and experiential, and (f) the method of delivering work-based learning differed by model. A three-phase functional assessment was conducted to develop and test hypotheses about the relation between instructional accommodations in academic areas and behavior problems for three adolescents with severe behavioral disorders. Implementation of one or more of the instructional accommodations resulted in improved academic productivity and accuracy and reduced behavior problems. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

The effectiveness of transition planning for individuals with mental retardation was investigated by comparing outcomes of 322 adults who graduated from high school in 1985 with 82 who graduated in 1993. The class of 1993 demonstrated better outcomes in several areas of adult adjustment. Recommendations for improvements are discussed. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

A follow-up study of 164 individuals with learning disabilities to obtain adult adjustment information found that 43% enrolled in postsecondary education/job training, few were involved in the community, 30% were in independent living, and most had good personal and social relationships. There were concerns about lack of knowledge of health habits, training opportunities, writing skills, and community organizations. (JOW)

A study examined the records of 99 non-adjudicated students with severe emotional and/or behavior disorders (EBD), 49 of whom were placed in regular schools and 50 who were in segregated schools. Results indicated that students served in regular schools were identified as severely behaviorally disordered at an earlier age. (CR)

Results of follow-up studies conducted on 67 high-school students with behavior disorders (BD) who graduated in 1985 and 22 graduates with BD who graduated in 1993, after passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), were compared to investigate the effects of transition requirements. The class of 1993 demonstrated better outcomes in several areas, but did not experience outcomes equal to graduates without disabilities. (Author/CR)

The adjustment of individuals with mild disabilities one and three years after high school graduation was studied. The comparison of individuals with behavioral disorders (n=24), learning disabilities (n=374), and mental disabilities (n=75) assessed employment status, job status, and other variables, such as involvement in postsecondary education and living arrangement. Iowa high school graduates (n=322) with mental disabilities were interviewed one and three years after graduation, concerning general status, employment, and adult adjustment. Over the postgraduation period, subjects became more independent in living arrangements and increased the number of hours per week of employment, but only approximately 20% met criteria for successful adjustment. Forty-one special educators, who were followed over a five-year period following the receipt of their undergraduate degrees, exhibited slow but steady increases in emotional exhaustion over the time period. Teachers of older students with disabilities and teachers of students with behavioral disorders exhibited more emotional exhaustion. (JDD)

This study investigated adult adjustment of male and female graduates with mental disabilities out of school for three years. Year three data indicated that males and females had achieved comparable rates of full-time competitive employment, but females were falling behind in hourly wages. From years one to three, there were positive shifts in several adult adjustment variables. (JDD)

The adult adjustment of 101 dropouts with learning disabilities (LD), whose graduating class had been out of school for 1 year, was investigated in terms of employment rate, occupational status, hours worked, wages, and benefits; vocational training, postsecondary education, and usefulness of high school; instructional model used; gender; and comparison with LD students from same class who graduated. The adjustment of 130 high school graduates and 70 dropouts, all with behavioral disorders, is investigated, focusing on employment, living arrangements, leisure activities, coping mechanisms, and difficulties with law enforcement. Six students with learning disabilities were taught to solve arithmetic problems appearing on worksheets containing self-monitoring checklists including mnemonic devices to facilitate retention. Results found student performance improved to the criterion level of over 90 percent correct and was maintained over a follow-up period. (Author/PB)

The study investigated the adult adjustment of 318 former special education students labelled mentally retarded, 1 year after graduation. Current living situation, marital status, and leisure activities were examined as were variables related to employment (job type and status, hours worked per week, wages earned), and high school predictor variables. Three mildly retarded 11 year olds were administered reading probes for a period of 4 months, and number of words read correctly were compared to student performance on a criterion-referenced mastery test. Findings questioned whether such probes alone yield sufficient information for making program decisions during the course of instruction. (Author/DB)

The adult adjustment of 911 learning-disabled individuals 1 year after graduation was investigated in terms of general characteristics (marital status, leisure activities); employment characteristics; high school vocational training; postsecondary education; and perceptions of high school experiences. Multiple baseline designs were used to examine the effects of an instructional package on accuracy of performance in solving multiplication facts by 3 students with learning disabilities. The instructional package included the following components: (a) a modified instructional sequence in which multiplication facts were grouped into the zeros, ones, doubles, fives, and nines categories, and those remaining; (b) identification of the category in which each fact belonged; (c) mnemonic strategies associated with solving facts in each category; and (d) steps to be completed for solving facts in each category. Results indicated that the instructional package produced substantial and immediate effects. After receiving instruction, a participant's accuracy was often 100%, and this was maintained throughout the evaluation even as other strategies were introduced. Comparable results occurred across students, demonstrating replication of the effects of the instructional package. This study investigated the adult adjustment of a statewide random sample of 737 young adults with learning disabilities, 59 labeled behaviorally disordered, and 142 labeled mentally disabled, all graduates of special education resource teacher programs. Results are reported in terms of (a) general status information, such as marital status and living arrangements; (b) information about those competitively employed, such as wages, hours worked per week, and percentage of living expenses paid; and (c) comparison of competitively employed versus unemployed individuals, in terms of high school vocational training and work experiences.
