Objetivos: reportar el caso de una paciente con tumor de colisión del útero y realizar una revisión de la literatura respecto al diagnóstico histopatológico, tratamiento y pronóstico de esta condición. Materiales y métodos: mujer de 76 años que consultó al centro nacional de referencia del cáncer en Bogotá (Colombia), donde se hizo el diagnóstico de tumor de colisión del útero, compuesto por un adenocarcinoma de endometrio tipo seroso y adenosarcoma de cérvix. Recibió tratamiento quirúrgico más quimioterapia y radioterapia complementaria, falleció a los 16 meses. Se realizó una búsqueda de la literatura en las bases de datos Medline vía PubMed y Embase, que incluía reportes y series de caso de mujeres con diagnóstico de tumor de colisión del útero, y se extrajo información sobre el diagnóstico, tratamiento y pronóstico. Se realizó un resumen narrativo de los hallazgos. Resultados: la búsqueda identificó 36 títulos, de los cuales se incluyeron 14 estudios que incluían 17 pacientes. El diagnóstico histopatológico más frecuente fue el adenocarcinoma endometrioide de endometrio y sarcoma endometrial de alto y bajo grado (47 %). El tratamiento básico fue quirúrgico. Cerca del 50 % recibió tratamiento adyuvante con quimioterapia y radioterapia (15 %). La sobrevida a 1 año fue del 75 %. Conclusiones: en la literatura no se identificaron casos de tumores de colisión de útero con la histopatología y en la ubicación del caso presentado. La mortalidad a dos años es cercana al 28 % si se toma en cuenta el caso reportado. Se necesitan más estudios que describan la inmunohistoquímica, el tratamiento y el pronóstico de esta condición.

Introducción. La ileostomía derivativa de protección se realiza con el objetivo de proteger la anastomosis intestinal después de una resección colorrectal. Esta resección intestinal es el procedimiento extendido más frecuentemente realizado en pacientes con cáncer de ovario, con el fin de lograr una citorreducción completa. Conocer las indicaciones, el uso, las técnicas y las complicaciones de las ileostomías es importante para los grupos multidisciplinarios que tratan estas pacientes. Métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda en PubMed vía Medline y una revisión narrativa actualizada de los principales hallazgos sobre las indicaciones, las técnicas quirúrgicas, complicaciones y el uso de la ileostomía derivativa en el cáncer de ovario. Resultados. El uso de la ileostomía derivativa en cáncer de ovario sigue siendo un tema controvertido. Hasta la fecha, ni la ileostomía de derivación ni la ileostomía fantasma se han asociado con una reducción en la incidencia de la fuga anastomótica, pero ambas técnicas podrían disminuir su gravedad. Conclusión. La ileostomía de derivación en cáncer de ovario se usa para proteger una anastomosis distal tras una resección intestinal, en caso de fuga anastomótica si no se ha realizado una ostomía previa o en caso de obstrucción intestinal.

Objetivos: reportar un caso de Tumor de Ovario de los Cordones Sexuales con Túbulos Anulares (TCSTA), hacer una revisión de la literatura acerca del diagnóstico, tratamiento y pronóstico de esta condición. Materiales y métodos: se informa el caso de una mujer que consultó al Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, Bogotá (Colombia), con diagnóstico final de TCSTA avanzado, quien recibió tratamiento quirúrgico y quimioterapia con evolución satisfactoria a los 6 meses. Se realizó una búsqueda de la literatura en las bases de datos Medline vía PubMed, LILACS y Scielo, que incluía reportes y series de caso de mujeres con diagnóstico de TCSTA, publicados desde 1990, sin incluir rango de edad. Se extrajo información sobre el diagnóstico, tratamiento y pronóstico reportado. Se realizó resumen narrativo de los hallazgos. Resultados: se incluyeron 14 publicaciones que incluían 26 pacientes. La edad media al diagnóstico fue de 22,5 años. Los síntomas principales fueron Tumor de ovario de los cordones sexuales con túbulos anulares: reporte de caso y revisión de la literatura alteraciones de la menstruación y dolor pélvico. La tomografía computarizada fue la tecnología de imágenes más frecuentemente utilizada. El tratamiento fue quirúrgico, siempre usado, acompañado de quimioterapia (29 %); 2 casos recibieron radioterapia. Hubo recaída en el 20 % de los casos. La mortalidad fue del 12,5 %, toda en el primer año. Conclusiónes: la información sobre la utilidad diagnóstica de las imágenes, marcadores tumorales y estudios de histoquímica es escasa, como también los datos sobre el pronóstico de la entidad. El tratamiento quirúrgico es el de elección, teniendo en cuenta el deseo de fertilidad de la paciente y el estadio tumoral. Se requieren más estudios que documenten de manera más detallada el manejo de esta condición.

Varronia curassavica Jacq. is an aromatic species appertaining to the Boraginaceae family and has been mentioned for its numerous traditional uses and pharmacological properties, especially its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the phytochemical profile and antifungal activities of the essential oils of V. curassavica, in addition to analyzing the ADMET properties of the majority components. The GC-MS analysis of V. curassavica essential oil (EOVC) comprised 97.36% of total composition, with α-pinene, β-caryophyllene, and bicyclogermacrene (44.46%, 22.87%, and 13.05%, respectively) as the main constituents among other minor/trace constituents. The antifungal activity of EOVC was evaluated against three Candida species and was observed with IC50 > 200 μg/mL. Remarkably, the combination of EOVC with fluconazole significantly reduced the IC50 required for the drug to inhibit C. tropicalis (0.003 μg/mL), C. albicans (0.7996 μg/mL), and C. krusei (17.73 μg/mL). In addition, ADME/Tox studies using α-pinene revealed that the compound poses no toxicity threats but requires caution due to its high permeability to the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Overall, the obtained results suggest that Varronia curassavica essential oil is a potentially good antifungal agent for combating fungal resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the gender perspective in scientific research and sex differences in biological studies on emotional disorders have become increasingly important. However, sex bias in basic research on anxiety and depression is still far from being covered. This review addresses the study of sex differences in the field of anxiety and depression using animal models that consider this issue so far. What can preclinical studies tell us and what are their main limitations? First, we describe the behavioral tests most frequently used in preclinical research to assess depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors in rodents. Then, we analyze the main findings, strengths, and weaknesses of rodent models of anxiety and depression, dividing them into three main categories: sex chromosome complement-biased sex differences; gonadal hormone-biased sex differences; environmental-biased sex differences. Regardless of the animal model used, none can reproduce all the characteristics of such complex and multifactorial pathologies as anxiety and depressive disorders; however, each animal model contributes to elucidating the bases that underlie these disorders. The importance is highlighted of considering sex differences in the responses that emerge from each model.

The first objective is to highlight the lack of tools to measure whether a given intervention affords neuroprotection in patients with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's diseases. A second aim is to present the primary outcome measures used in clinical trials in cohorts of patients with neurodegenerative diseases. The final aim is to discuss whether metabolomics using body fluids may lead to the discovery of biomarkers of neuroprotection. Information on the primary outcome measures in clinical trials related to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease registered since 2018 was collected. We analysed the type of measures selected to assess efficacy, not in terms of neuroprotection since, as stated in the aims, there is not yet any marker of neuroprotection. Proteomic approaches using plasma or CSF have been proposed. PET could estimate the extent of lesions, but disease progression does not necessarily correlate with a change in tracer uptake. We propose some alternatives based on considering the metabolome. A new opportunity opens with metabolomics because there have been impressive technological advances that allow the detection, among others, of metabolites related to mitochondrial function and mitochondrial structure in serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid; some of the differentially concentrated metabolites can become reliable biomarkers of neuroprotection. Most neurodegenerative disorders, including the two most common, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (AD), course with activation of microglia, the resident innate immune cells of the central nervous system. A3 adenosine receptor (A3R) agonists have been proposed to be neuroprotective by regulating the phenotype of activated microglia. RNAseq was performed using samples isolated from lipopolysaccharide/interferon-γ activated microglia treated with 2-Cl-IB-MECA, a selective A3R agonist. The results showed that the number of negatively regulated genes in the presence of 2-Cl-IB-MECA was greater than the number of positively regulated genes. Gene ontology enrichment analysis showed regulation of genes participating in several cell processes, including those involved in immune-related events. Analysis of known and predicted protein-protein interactions showed that Smad3 and Sp1 are transcription factors whose genes are regulated by A3R activation. Under the conditions of cell activation and agonist treatment regimen, 2-Cl-IB-MECA did not lead to any tendency to favor the expression of genes related to neuroprotective microglia (M2).
