This paper presents laboratory sociolinguistics, a novel approach to variationist sociolinguistics in which laboratory techniques and quantitative research methods are central. The aim is to take our understanding of the linguistic, social and cognitive mechanisms underlying language variation and its dynamics further than in previous sociolinguistic work, and to shed new light on the driving forces that turn language variation into language change. Laboratory sociolinguistics is anchored in new developments in sociolinguistics, in linguistics and in social sciences in general, and reaches out to other disciplines. This contribution is a first introduction of this novel approach. It sketches the rationale, defines its research focus, presents the type of research questions that can be tackled and invites other researchers to join this development.

This special issue brings together a collection of papers that highlight recent advances in the field of lectometry. Lectometric research measures distances between various types of language varieties, such as dialects or sociolects. In addition to briefly sketching the development of the field, this introductory paper surveys the theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions a lectometric approach to language has to offer. We furthermore identify blind spots within the current scope of lectometric work and lay out suggestions for future avenues the field could go down. The paper concludes by introducing the various contributions to this special issue of “Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik” and by outlining how each of those papers contributes to extending the scope of lectometry.

In this article, we assess the merits of Digital Humanities, and argue that this approach has advanced the field of Dutch linguistics considerably, but at the same time holds some dangers and misconceptions, like (i) the assumption that the new-fangled studies clash with older, more traditional research, (ii) a conceited but unwarranted disdain for current-day non-quantitative work, (iii) the idea that the early adoption of quantitative methods in linguistics created an unbridgeable gap with its neighbouring discipline, the literary studies, and (iv) the risk of the dialectics of lead. We then detect the weak spot of the Digital Humanities approach in linguistics. Though we acknowledge that great strides are currently being made and that earlier research grappled with the issue as well, what turns out to be frustratingly elusive is the whole field of ‘semantics’, especially given the insights from cognitive linguistics about its complicated nature, including encyclopaedic and contextual knowledge. The aporia of semantics is coped with differently in linguistics and literature. While linguistics has sought a rapprochement with the exact sciences, it steered clear from interpretation as much as possible. The field of literary studies, by contrast, remains loyal to its original ‘humanities’ mission, but is now no longer exclusively – or primarily – driven by critically interpreting the meaning of texts as such. Instead, its focus has shifted to offering a critical investigation of the field itself, and of society at large. Both approaches are in danger of derailing: the ‘semanticophobia’ of some linguists dismisses a real and fascinating part of language from its purview; the ‘critical discourse’ approach of some literary colleagues runs the risk of ignoring some useful text-based techniques for empirical research. This article presents and discusses the results from a corpus-based study on the variation between English complement clauses with and without that in original versus translated English. The study is primarily aimed at disentangling the effects of, on the one hand, intratextual structural priming, i.e. the influence from a relevantly similar construction produced earlier in the (target) text, and, on the other hand, intertextual priming from the source text to the target text, i.e. the influence from a relatively similar source language construction encountered in the to be translated stretch of source text. The results indicate that whereas regular intratextual priming has the expected effect in the original English texts, this effect disappears in the translated texts, where intertextual priming turns out to be the most relevant mechanism.

The material for this paper comes from Finnish people who wrote about their experiences of the music of digital games. We collected 184 texts, all but one written in Finnish. There is relatively little code-switching into English at the clause level, but the vocabulary of the texts is influenced by English on a continuum from clearly English words such as comfy to established loanwords such as uniikki (‘unique’). We will consider how the influence of the English language used both in the games and in discussions about them characterizes the vocabulary of these texts and how the English language enables the authors to enter the game world. peerReviewed
