Picolinate-based segmented dianionic ligands L12– (5-((4-carboxyphenyl)ethynyl)picolinate) and L22– (5,5′-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dipicolinate) have been used in the synthesis of the highly robust and luminescent europium(III) coordination polymers [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(H2O)2(L1)2] (1) and [(CH3)2NH2][Eu(L2)2]·H2O·CH3COOH (2). Both 1 and 2 exhibit high selectivity for detection of nitroaromatic compounds since they act as quenchers of the Eu3+ emission. Stern–Volmer plots, using nitrobenzene as a quencher, yielded values of KSV = 150 M–1 and 160 M–1 for 1 and 2, respectively. Luminescence studies in the presence of different metal ions indicate a high selectivity for Fe3+ detection, with KSV values of 471 M–1 and 706 M–1 for 1 and 2, respectively. Both 1 and 2 possess extremely robust extended structures, leading to emissive properties that are stable in a wide pH range., Luminescent europium(III) coordination polymers exhibiting a remarkable robustness have been prepared from ethynyl-bridged picolinate ligands. These compounds can selectively detect nitrobenzene and Fe3+ ions in aqueous medium through luminescence quenching. Furthermore, they present a high stability over a wide pH range that allows their practical use in harsh conditions.

The synthesis, crystal structure and (photo)magnetic properties of the anhydrous spin crossover salt of formula [Fe(bpp)2](C6H8O4) (1) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; C6H8O4 = adipate dianion), obtained by desolvation at 400 K of the original tetrahydrate in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC–SC) transformation, are reported. This work offers a comparison between this compound and the previously reported hydrated material ([Fe(bpp)2](C6H8O4)·4H2O, 1·4H2O), highlighting the significance of the thermal conditions used in the dehydration-rehydration processes. In both compounds, a hydrogen-bonded network between iron(II) complexes and adipate anions is observed. The original tetrahydrate (1·4H2O) is low-spin and desolvation at 450 K triggers a low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) transition to an amorphous phase that remains stable over the whole temperature range of study. Surprisingly, the dehydrated compound at 400 K (1) keeps the crystallinity, undergoes a partial spin crossover (T1/2 = 180 K) and a quantitative LS to HS photomagnetic conversion at low temperatures, with a T(LIESST) value of 61 K.

The iron(ii) salt [Fe(bpp)2](isonicNO)2·HisonicNO·5H2O (1) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; isonicNO = isonicotinate N-oxide anion) undergoes a partial spin crossover (SCO) with symmetry breaking at T1 = 167 K to a mixed-spin phase (50% high-spin (HS), 50% low-spin (LS)) that is metastable below T2 = 116 K. Annealing the compound at lower temperatures results in a 100% LS phase that differs from the initial HS phase in the formation of a hydrogen bond (HB) between two water molecules (O4W and O5W) of crystallisation. Neutron crystallography experiments have also evidenced a proton displacement inside a short strong hydrogen bond (SSHB) between two isonicNO anions. Both phenomena can also be detected in the mixed-spin phase. 1 undergoes a light-induced excited-state spin trapping (LIESST) of the 100% HS phase, with breaking of the O4W⋯O5W HB and the onset of proton static disorder in the SSHB, indicating the presence of a light-induced activation energy barrier for proton motion. This excited state shows a stepped relaxation at T1(LIESST) = 68 K and T2(LIESST) = 76 K. Photocrystallography measurements after the first relaxation step reveal a single Fe site with an intermediate geometry, resulting from the random distribution of the HS and LS sites throughout the lattice., A proton migration across a short strong hydrogen bond can be triggered by spin crossover of a remote Fe2+ cation, with the onset of a photoinduced activation energy barrier for proton motion at low temperatures.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) causes major environmental problems and consequently, several treatments are proposed, favoring the passive systems because of their many advantages. The main goal of these procedures is the neutralization and removal of potentially toxic elements (PTE), yet little is known about the changes in the microbial assemblages in response to the hydrochemical variations during the treatments. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to determine the changes in the diversity and structure of the prokaryotic assemblages in a hybrid abiotic and biological (wetland) passive treatment system. The 16S rRNA gene survey showed that the AMD coming from the mine (pH 2.6) was mainly composed of acidophilic genera such as Acidithiobacillus, Leptospirillum, Ferritrophicum, and Cuniculiplasma (up to 76 % relative abundance). In the abiotic treatment, Acidiphilium was dominant in the sections with limestone filters (pH 2.2-4.8), followed by Limnobacter in the subsequent dolomite/limestone and phosphoric rock filters (pH 5.2-5.8). In these abiotic passive treatment sections, the microbial assemblage showed a limited diversity and richness. However, when the treated AMD reached the two final wetlands (pH ~6.8), the microbial diversity and richness increased, suggesting that further bioattenuation mechanisms might be occurring. Limnobacter and Novosphingobium were the main bacterial genera in the water samples of the wetland sections (Arundo donax). These changes in the composition of the microbial assemblages were highly correlated with the pH and Eh values during the treatment (p-value0.001); however, the concentration of metal(loid)s such as Al, Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn were also significantly related (p-value0.05). In conclusion, the studied passive AMD treatment system enhanced the chemical quality of the treated AMD, showing high removal efficiencies for Al and Fe (99 %), and increasing the microbial diversity and richness in the effluent.

The spin crossover salt [Fe(bpp) 2 ](isonicNO) 2 ·2.4H 2 O ( 1 ·2.4H 2 O) (bpp = 2,6‐bis(pyrazol‐3‐yl)pyridine; isonicNO = isonicotinate N‐oxide anion) exhibits a very abrupt spin crossover at T 1 /2 = 274.4 K. This triggers a supramolecular linkage (H‐bond) isomerization that responds reversibly towards light irradiation or temperature change. Isotopic effects in the thermomagnetic behaviour reveal the importance of hydrogen bonds in defining the magnetic state. Further, the title compound can be reversibly dehydrated to afford 1 , a material that also exhibits spin crossover coupled to H‐bond isomerization, leading to strong kinetic effects in the thermomagnetic properties.

A dual-function material in which ferroelectricity and spin crossover coexist in the same temperature range has been obtained. Our synthetic strategy allows the construction of acentric crystal structures in a predictable way and is based on the high directionality of hydrogen bonds. The well-known iron(II) spin crossover complex [Fe(bpp)₂]²+ (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine), a four-fold noncentrosymmetric H-bond donor, was combined with a disymmetric H-bond acceptor such as the isonicotinate (isonic) anion to afford [Fe(bpp)₂](isonic)₂·2H₂O. This low-spin iron(II) compound crystallises in the acentric nonpolar I-4 space group and shows piezoelectricity and SHG properties. Upon dehydration, it undergoes a single-crystal to single-crystal structural rearrangement to a monoclinic polar Pc phase that is ferroelectric and exhibits spin crossover.

International audience; One of the most attractive characteristics of some Prussian blue derivatives is the sensitivity of their magnetic properties to the irradiation with light. In this work photoinduced effects in the (Fe0.2Cr0.8)1.5[Cr(CN)6]·15H2O PBA have been studied by means of X-ray-based spectroscopies and magnetometry. It is found that the photosensitivity of this compound is mostly centred on the Fe cations: the exposure to green light induces a transfer of electrons from them to the Cr that provokes a reversal of the previously existing linkage isomerization and increases the elastic strain caused by the misfit of the unit cells of the Fe–NC–Cr and Cr–NC–Cr sublattices. The green light also quenches the magnetism of the FeII high-spin (HS) ions present in the sample and reduces the magnetic moments of most of the Cr cations except for CrII HS. Our study highlights the important role played by the mismatch between the unit cells of the coexisting sub-lattices in ternary Prussian blue analogues.

The paper reports the syntheses, crystal structures, thermal and (photo)magnetic properties of spin crossover salts of formula [Fe(bpp)2](C6H8O4)·4H2O (1·4H2O), [Fe(bpp)2](C8H4O4)·2CH3OH·H2O (2·2MeOH·H2O) and [Fe(bpp)2](C8H4O4)·5H2O (2·5H2O) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3yl)pyridine; C6H8O4 = adipate dianion; C8H4O4 = terephthalate dianion). The salts exhibit an intricate network of hydrogen bonds between low-spin iron(II) complexes and carboxylate dianions, with solvent molecules sitting in the voids. Desolvation is accompanied by a low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) transformation in the materials. The dehydrated phase 2 undergoes a two-step transition with a second step showing thermal hysteresis (T1/2↑ = 139 K and T1/2↓ = 118 K). 2 displays a quantitative LS to HS photomagnetic conversion, with a T(LIESST) value of 63 K.

The appearance of magnetic order in the (Fe0.2Cr0.8)1.5[Cr(CN)6]·15H2O Prussian blue analogue at low temperature has been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. With the help of ligand field multiplet analysis we have been able to identify the oxidation states of the metallic cations present in the sample and their evolution with temperature. Our experiments reveal that the appearance of ferromagnetic order is triggered by the transformation of CrIII cations to CrII high-spin caused by a transfer of electrons from the Fe to the Cr resulting in an increase of the magnetic interactions within the (Cr, Cr) sublattice. The misfit strain between the (Fe, Cr) and the (Cr, Cr) moieties that coexist within this ternary material influences the balance of oxidation states and hence the magnetic properties of the metallic ions. Misfit relaxation also plays a role in determining the differences between the surface and the bulk of the material. The measurement of the magnetic moments in those two regions suggests that the surface may have a reduced Curie temperature compared to the bulk.

Bilayers of Prussian blue analogues (PBA) constituted of hard and soft magnets have been fabricated by means of electrochemical deposition. This method affords a good contact between two PBA thin films of nanometer thickness. Complete characterization of the resulting system has been performed, which has allowed the determination of the preservation of the chemical identity of both materials during the electrodeposition and the establishment of a clear interface between them. The magnetic behavior of the bilayer can be explained in terms of an exchange-spring magnet.

Segmented homopolytopic ligands that consist of a rigid central arylene platform, ethynylene spacers, and terminal chelating picolinate subunits have been synthesized in good yields in a two-step procedure involving a Sonogashira-type cross coupling reaction between the ester methyl 5-bromopyridine-2-carboxylate and several arylacetylenes, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting methyl picolinates. A similar strategy has been employed for the preparation of heteroditopic ligands containing picolinate and a second non-chelating pyridine or benzoate unit. The compounds are potential candidates for organic linkers in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs).

In this paper, we report on the synthesis, crystal structure, and photomagnetic properties of the spin-crossover salt of formula [Fe(bpp)2](C6H4NO2)2&middot, 4H2O (1&middot, 4H2O) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine, C6H4NO2&minus, = nicotinate anion). This compound exhibits a 3D supramolecular architecture built from hydrogen bonds between iron(II) complexes, nicotinate anions, and water molecules. As synthesized, the hydrated material is low-spin and desolvation triggers a low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) transformation. Anhydrous phase 1 undergoes a partial spin crossover (T1/2= 281 K) and a LS to HS photomagnetic conversion with a T(LIESST) value of 56 K.

The cationic nitronyl nitroxide free radical of the N-methylpyridinium type p-MepyNN + has been combined with [Mo 8 0 26 ] 4- and Keggin [SiW 12 0 40 ] 4- polyanions to afford salts ( p-MepyNN) 4 [Mo 8 0 26 ] DMSO (DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide) (1) and (p-MepyNN)4[SiW 12 0 40 ] 6DMF (DMF = dimethylformamide) (2). Herein, their structural and magnetic properties are described.

The self-assembly of a 1:1 mixture of copper(II) ions and a rigid heteroditopic ligand L containing phen and terpy binding units gives rise in the solid state to green crystals of a hexanuclear metallamacrocycle 1. X-ray crystallography reveals that 1 consists of molecular hexagons of the grid-type family in which each metal ion is bound to two different ligands through the phen and terpy units, plus a weakly coordinated PF6 (-) anion in a highly distorted octahedral geometry. ES-MS studies of acetonitrile solutions of L and copper(II) in a 1:1 ratio show mixtures of polynuclear complexes in which trinuclear L3Cu3 species are predominant.

The influence of lattice water in the magnetic properties of spin-crossover [Fe(bpp)2]X2.nH2O salts [bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine] is well-documented. In most cases, it stabilizes the low-spin state compared to the anhydrous compound. In other cases, it is rather the contrary. Unraveling this mystery implies the study of the microscopic changes that accompany the loss of water. This might be difficult from an experimental point of view. Our strategy is to focus on some salts that undergo a nonreversible dehydration-hydration process without loss of crystallinity. By comparison of the structural and magnetic properties of original and rehydrated samples, several rules concerning the role of water at the microscopic level can be deduced. This paper reports on the crystal structure, thermal studies, and magnetic properties of [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(bpy)(ox)2]2.2H2O (1), [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(phen)(ox)2]2.0.5H2O.0.5MeOH (2), and [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(phen)(ox)2]2.5.5H2O.2.5MeOH (3). Salt 1 contains both high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) Fe2+ cations in a 1:1 ratio. Dehydration yields the anhydrous spin-crossover compound with T1/2 downward arrow = 353 K and T1/2 upward arrow = 369 K. Rehydration affords the dihydrate [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(bpy)(ox)2]2.2H2O (1r) with 100% HS Fe2+ sites. Salt 2 also contains both HS and LS Fe2+ cations in a 1:1 ratio. Dehydration yields the anhydrous spin-crossover compound with T1/2 downward arrow = 343 K and T1/2 upward arrow = 348 K. Rehydration affords [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(phen)(ox)2]2.0.5H2O (2r) with 72% Fe2+ sites in the LS configuration. The structural, magnetic, and thermal properties of these rehydrated compounds 1r and 2r are also discussed. Finally, 1 has been dehydrated and resolvated with MeOH to give [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(bpy)(ox)2]2.MeOH (1s) with 33% HS Fe2+ sites. The influence of the guest solvent in the Fe2+ spin state can anticipate the future applications of these compounds in solvent sensing.

The present work shows the effects of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) orally administered on reproduction and development of the insect Blattella germanica. Newly emerged females were provided with food containing AuNPs (87.44μg/g) of a size between 15 and 30nm (mean 21.8nm), and were allowed to mate with males. Food ingestion, mortality, reproductive parameters (time to ootheca formation and eclosion, ootheca viability and fertility) as well as postembryonic developmental parameters of the first ootheca (nymphal survival and life span) were recorded throughout the experiment. Gold from AuNPs was accumulated by adults of B. germanica with a bioaccumulation factor of 0.1. Ingestion of AuNPs did not disturb the time for ootheca formation nor ootheca eclosion. However, ootheca viability was decreased almost by 25% in AuNPs treated females in comparison to controls. At the same time the number of hatched nymphs was decreased by 32.8% (p

The heating of Co(2+) ferricyanide above 801C induces an inner charge transfer from Co(2+) towards Fe(III) to form the mixed valence system Co(2+)Co(III) ferri- ferro-cyanide. This charge transfer takes place preserving the material framework and forming a solid solution of the initial and final species. The assembly of hexacyanoferrate(III) anions and nickel(II) bis-diamino complexes of the chiral ligand trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (trans-chxn) yields cyanide-bridged two-dimensional ferromagnets of the general formula [Ni(trans-chxn)2]3[Fe(CN)6]2‚2H2O. Their crystal structure is built from cyanide-bridged bimetallic planes separated by the bulky chxn ligands, giving rise to a large interlayer distance ( d ) 11.7 A). These materials order ferromagnetically at the Curie temperature TC ) 14 K. AC susceptibility measurements evidence an unusual magnetic behavior below TC, with a marked frequency dependence. A thorough magnetic analysis demonstrates that this complex behavior is due to the pinning of the domain walls which results from the coexistence of the layered structure and the strong magnetic anisotropy. An activation energy for domain wall movement Ea ) 116 K has been determined. Ferromagnetic materials of this kind that incorporate structural chirality have been obtained by using the enantiopure ligands trans-(1S,2S)-chxn and trans-(1R,2R)-chxn, as evidenced by circular dichroism spectroscopy. The ligand cis-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine affords also a two-dimensional compound of formula [Ni(cis-chxn)2]3[Fe(CN)6]2‚2H2O. This material orders ferromagnetically at TC ) 11 K and also exhibits slow relaxation behavior.

Structural, thermal, magnetic and solvent-exchange properties of the spin crossover compound [Fe(bpp)2][Cr(bpy)(ox)2]2 containing paramagnetic anions are given. This complex salt 1 crystallises as a dihydrate with two inequivalent (high-spin and low-spin) FeII sites. The dehydrated compound is a spin-crossover material with T1/2 ↑ = 369 K and T1/2 ↓ = 353 K. Rehydration takes place without loss of crystallinity, yielding a polymorph (2) with 100 % high-spin Fe II sites. The different high-spin fractions in 1 and 2 have been correlated to structural changes in the FeII second coordination sphere. A series of hybrid organic-inorganic magnets of formula p-rad[MIICr(ox)3] [M = Mn (1), Co (2), Ni (3), Zn (4)] and m-rad[MIICr(ox)3] [M = Mn (5), Co (6)], in which N-methylpyridinium cations bearing a nitronyl nitroxide moiety in positions 3 (m-rad) or 4 (p-rad) of the pyridine ring coexist with the 2D honeycomb-like oxalato-bridged bimetallic lattice, has been prepared and studied by AC and DC magnetic susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopy. In general, the physical properties of these magnets are not altered significantly by the insertion of the nitronyl nitroxide radicals although these paramagnetic molecules seem to interact weakly with the inorganic network as demonstrated by EPR spectroscopy. Some differences can also be observed between the p-rad and m-rad series, i.e. m-rad derivatives have smaller values for the critical temperatures and coercive fields. We also report on the X-ray crystal structures and magnetic properties of p-rad[Mn(H2O)Cr(ox)3]·2H2O (7) and m-rad[Mn(H2O)2Cr(ox)3]·2H2O (8), two extended oxalato-bridged compounds with new topologies. Compound 7 is antiferromagnetic and its structure is a 3D achiral lattice in which zigzag ferromagnetic MnCr chains (J/k = +0.8 K) are interconnected to form hellicoidal hexagonal channels with the cationic free radicals residing in the free space. Compound 8, however, exhibits a ladder-like structural pattern with competing magnetic interactions and paramagnetic behaviour down to low temperatures. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The photophysical properties of closely-coupled, binuclear complexes formed by connecting two ruthenium(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) complexes via an alkynylene group differ significantly from those of the relevant mononuclear complex. In particular, the energy of the first triplet excited state is lowered relative to the parent complex, because of the presence of the alkynylene substituent, while the triplet lifetime is prolonged, in part, because of extended electron delocalization. We now report that the triplet lifetime is also affected by the nature of the spectator 2,2'-bipyridyl ligands. Thus, replacing the parent 2,2'-bipyridine ligands with the corresponding 4,4'-dinitro-substituted ligands serves to decrease the luminescence yield and lifetime. With the corresponding carboxylate ester, the luminescence yield and lifetime are increased. Perdeuteration of the parent 2,2'-bipyridine ligands also leads to a modest increase in the luminescence yield. Such observations are indicative of electronic coupling between the various metal-to-ligand, charge-transfer excited triplet states. Temperature dependence studies confirm that these excited states are closely spaced and thermally accessible at ambient temperature. For some of the binuclear complexes, the quantum yield for formation of the lowest-energy triplet state is significantly less than unity.

Control of the Cu2+ ion coordination environment affords a 1D, magnetically diluted compound, [Cu(cis-chxn)2]3[Fe(CN)6]2·7H2O (1) and the 2D ferromagnetic material [Cu(cis-chxn)]3[Fe(CN)6]2·6H2O (2) with a critical temperature, Tc, of 3.5 K. A carboxy-substituted alkylammonium salt, namely, (4-carboxybenzyl)tributylammonium hexafluorophosphate, ZHPF(6), was prepared and used as incoming carboxylate ligand in a ligand-exchange reaction with [Mn(12)O(12)(O(2)CCH(3))(16)(H(2)O)(4)] (1) to afford a new Mn(12) single-molecule magnet (SMM), [Mn(12)O(12)(Z)(16)(H(2)O)(4)][PF(6)](16) (2), bearing 16 cationic units appended in the periphery. This compound behaves as a single-molecule magnet, exhibiting an out-of-phase ac magnetic susceptibility chi' '(M) signal that shows a single maximum in the 3.1-5.4 K temperature range. The frequency dependence of the maximum follows an Arrhenius law, with an effective energy barrier for reorientation of the spins U(eff) = 53 K. The reduced magnetization versus H/T data at different temperatures were fitted by using a Hamiltonian containing Zeeman, axial, and quartic zero-field splitting terms. The expected spin ground state S = 10 was found, and the least-squares fit afforded the following zero-field-splitting parameters: D = -0.44 cm(-1); B(4)(0) = 0.12 x 10(-4) cm(-1). Magnetization hysteresis loops were observed for 2, with a coercive field H(c) = 0.34 T. Complex 2 has been used as countercation in the preparation of a family of hybrid salts containing different polyoxometalate anions, [Mn(12)O(12)(Z)(16)(H(2)O)(4)][W(6)O(19)](8) (3), [Mn(12)O(12)(Z)(16)(H(2)O)(4)][PW(12)O(40)](16/3) (4), [Mn(12)O(12)(Z)(16)(H(2)O)(4)][(H(3)O)PW(11)O(39)Ni](4) (5), and [Mn(12)O(12)(Z)(16)(H(2)O)(4)][(H(3)O)PW(11)O(39)Co](4) (6). 3-6 exhibit typical magnetic hysteresis loops with higher coercive fields for the complexes containing diamagnetic polyanions: H(c) = 0.075 T (3), 0.046 T (4), 0.016 T (5), and 0.0075 T (6). However, the dynamics of the magnetic behavior below the blocking temperature is similar in all compounds. Broad frequency-dependent out-of-phase ac susceptibility signals are observed, presumably due to mixtures of different Jahn-Teller isomers. Their temperature dependence is also typical of an activated-energy process, with effective energy barriers in the 50 K range, irrespective of the nature of the polyoxoanion (diamagnetic, as in 3 and 4, or paramagnetic, as in 5 and 6). These findings seem to discard any influence of the polyoxometalate in the magnetic properties of the SMM.

A new heterometallic tetramer of formula [Cr2Cu 2(bpy)4(ox)5]·2H2O (1) (bpy=2,2′-bipyridine; ox=oxalate dianion) has been prepared and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements and ESR spectroscopy. The tetranuclear unit in 1 can be viewed as the combination of two terminal [Cr(bpy)2(ox)]- units with a central oxalato-bridged copper(II) dimer. The chromium ions are in a distorted octahedral environment with metal-ligand distances ranging from 1.944(4) to 2.064(5) A. The copper(II) centres lie in an axially distorted octahedron. The axial positions are occupied by one oxygen atom belonging to the central bridging oxalate anion [O(9)-Cu(1): 2.245(5) A] and one oxygen atom coming from the [Cr(bpy)2(ox)]- moiety [O(7)-Cu(1): 2.357(5) A]. The N2O2 equatorial environment is formed by a bpy ligand [Cu-N mean distance: 1.989(6) A] and the remaining oxygen atoms [Cu-O mean distance: 2.162(5) A]. The magnetic properties of 1 have been investigated in the 2-300 K temperature range. A ferromagnetic interaction between the copper(II) centres (J 1=+2 cm-1) is observed, whereas the interaction between the adjacent chromium(III) and copper(II) cations is weakly antiferromagnetic (J2=-0.65 cm-1). © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. In this work we have explored the possibilities to create layered organizations of the Mn 12 single-molecule magnets using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique or attaching these clusters onto a metal surface by preparing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). In the first part we discuss the use of the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique in order to obtain organized magnetic films formed by monolayers of these clusters. Two strategies have been used with this aim. The first one consists of mixing Mn 12 acetate or benzoate derivatives with an amphiphile, while the second procedure is based on the use of Mn 12 derivatives specifically designed to form LB films. An alternative method is that of preparing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Some preliminary results obtained with this method are reported in the second part of the work. To cite this article: M. Iron (II), cobalt (II) and nickel (II) complexes of 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (bpp) with [Cr(C2O4)3]3− have been prepared. They were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermal gravimetric analyses. All three compounds are isostructural and they are formed by isolated [MII(bpp)2]2+ and [Cr(C2O4)3]3− complexes and free ClO4 −. As expected, only the salt [Fe(bpp)2]2[Cr(C2O4)3]ClO4·5H2O shows a thermal spin transition with transition temperature (T1/2) around 375 K that is correlated to the loss of water molecules.

Thiophene-, phenylthiophene-, and indole-based nitronyl nitroxide (NN) and imino nitroxide (IN) radicals have been synthesised and their electrochemical and magnetic properties have been studied. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that NN radicals (1–3) exhibit a one-electron quasi-reversible oxidation process that results in the formation of the corresponding nitrosonium cations. This behaviour pushes the oxidation potential of the other redox-active moiety to very high values. The oxidation of the thiophene subunit occurs at 2.35 V, whereas the oxidation of the phenylthiophene and indole moieties takes place at 1.65 and 1.39 V, respectively. Oxidation of IN radicals (4–5) is irreversible and occurs at higher potentials, as compared to the parent NN compounds. This process has a weaker effect on the redox behaviour of the thiophene functions. Single-electron reductions are observed for all the radicals at around −1.2 V. The thiophene-based NN radical (1) crystallises in the monoclinic C2/c space group. The analysis of the crystal structure shows the formation of dimers of molecules related by a centre of symmetry. These dimers packed to form a honeycomb lattice of radicals. An estimate of the magnetic interaction between radicals in the solid (J = −3.4 K) has been obtained by fitting the magnetic susceptibility of 1 with the corresponding high-temperature series expansion. The indole-based NN radical (3) crystallises in the monoclinic P21/n space group. The crystal packing shows the presence of strong hydrogen bonds between the nitroxide oxygen atom and the hydrogen of the indolic amino function. This leads to zigzag chains that packed in the solid to form a two-dimensional squared lattice. Using the high-temperature series expansion for a 2D squared lattice of isotropic S = 1/2 spins in the fit of the magnetic susceptibility of 3 affords a value of J = −0.11 K for the interradical exchange coupling parameter. The phenylthiophene-based IN compound (5) crystallises in the triclinic P1 space group. Three independent molecules form its crystal structure. The magnetic properties of compounds 2, 4 and 5 are also indicative of weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Curie–Weiss plots for these compounds afford values of the Weiss constant θ of – 1.5, – 2.8 and – 1.9 K for 2, 4 and 5, respectively.

A new compound, IB-00208, has been isolated from the fermentation broth of an actinomycete isolated from a marine environment. The strain was identified as Actinomadura sp. by its chemical and phylogenetic characteristics. The compound shows cytotoxic activity on tumor cell lines and bactericidal activity against gram-positive bacteria.

The use of nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals as spectators inside extended inorganic magnetic lattices is described. Two possibilities are presently being explored, namely, the design of oxalato-bridged bimetallic networks by using cationic NN radicals of the N-alkylpyridinium type as templating agents, and the design of bimetallic lattices based on hexacyanometalates and nickel(II) diaminocomplexes incorporating anionic NN radicals of the carboxyphenyl type.

A correlation between the magnetic properties and the crystal structure of the nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radical 2-(6-ethynyl-2-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (6-HC⋮CPyNN, 1) and its imino nitroxide analogue 2-(6-ethynyl-2-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl (6-HC⋮CPyIN, 2) has been shown. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on these compounds are indicative of ferromagnetic interactions between molecular units. The imino nitroxide 2 is an organic ferromagnet with critical temperature TC = 0.19 K, whereas 1 behaves as an antiferromagnet ordering at the Neel temperature, TN = 0.54 K. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the P21/n space group. Their crystal packings are best described as chains of molecules linked by C⋮CH···O hydrogen bonds running along the [101] direction. We report the preparation of multi-component molecules based on pyridine-, bipyridine- and pyrene-substituted nitronyl nitroxide (NIT) radicals. The synthetic protocol is based on a Pd(0) promoted cross-coupling reaction between 6-BrPyNIT and either 6-HCCPyNIT, diethynyl substituted bipyridines, or 1-ethynylpyrene derivatives. The magnetic properties and X-ray structures of the pyridine (Py) and pyrene-based bi- and monoradicals are described briefly.

2-(4-Carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-yloxyl ( p-IMBAH), 2-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-yloxyl (m-IMBAH) and 2-(2-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-3-oxido-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yloxyl (o-NITBAH) have been prepared. The m-IMBAH and p-IMBAH radicals crystallised in monoclinic space group P2 1 /n while the o-NITBAH radical occupied the monoclinic space group Cc. In p-IMBAH, a 12-membered ring is formed via strong hydrogen bonds between two water molecules and two radicals, this unit being propagated along the b axis via additional hydrogen bonds. In m-IMBAH, the radicals are arranged in dimers held together by strong hydrogen bonds between the acid and the imine functions, each dimer being connected with its neighbours via hydrogen bonds forming alternating chains along the c axis. No cyclic arrangements are evident in o-NITBAH, the radicals being organized into infinite chains. In each case, the product of paramagnetic susceptibility with T lies in the 0.362 to 0.374 emu K mol –1 range at room temperature while the reciprocal susceptibility follows a Curie-Weiss law above 20 K with θ=+1.38, +5.24 and –0.81 K, respectively, for p-IMBAH, m-IMBAH and o-NITBAH. The isotropic 14 N hyperfine coupling constants are found from solution experiments to be 9.20 (a N1 ) and 4.28 (a N2 ) G for the imino radicals and 7.59 G for the nitronyl nitroxide radical. The principal values of the g-tensor measured on single crystals afforded an average of 2.0066/7 while in solution g iso =2.0060 for p/m-IMBAH and 2.0065 for o-NITBAH.

A series of mononuclear transition metal complexes of the tetradentate (N2O2) 6,6‘-bis(3‘‘-oxide-1‘‘-oxyl-4‘‘,4‘‘,5‘‘,5‘‘-tetramethylimidazoline-2‘‘-yl)-2,2‘-bipyridine (NIT-bpy) has been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic, magnetic, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The free NIT-bpy ligand is planar with an anti-conformation, whereas in each complex this ligand is tetracoordinated to the metal in a syn-conformation comprising the equatorial plane of a distorted octahedron. Rigid preorganized multitopic ligands have been designed and synthesized. The Pd(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between ethynylated derivatives of bipyridine or terpyridine and the corresponding bipyridine or terpyridine halides or triflates provide access to various homo-ditopic, hetero-ditopic, homo-tritopic, and hetero-tritopic ligands bearing acetylene or diphenylacetylene central units in fair to excellent yields. Optimal conditions were found with [Pd(PPh3)2Cl2], CuI in THF and diisopropylamine at rt, or with [Pd(PPh3)4] in benzene and diisopropylamine at 80 °C. When a phenylethynyl group is present in the molecule, the relevant conditions involve [Pd(PPh3)4] in n-propylamine at 60 °C. Oxidative dimerization of the ethynylated derivatives in the presence of cupric salts and oxygen gives the corresponding homo-ditopic ligands bearing diacetylene or diphenyldiacetylene as a spacer in good yields. Photophysical and electrochemical properties have been recorded for a series of mono- and binuclear ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) 2,2‘-bipyridyl complexes that contain an ethynyl-bridged ditopic ligand. In particular, the electrochemical properties are indicative of electron delocalization over an extended π*-orbital in the π-radical anions. The site of attachment of the ethynyl substituent to the 2,2‘-bipyridyl ring affects the various properties, especially absorption and emission spectral maxima. In most cases, the rates of nonradiative deactivation of the lowest-energy triplet excited states are slower than expected for a corresponding complex not possessing a conjugated substituent. This effect is rationalized in terms of electron delocalization over part of the ditopic ligand within the triplet state and its significance depends markedly on the triplet energy of the complex in question.
