The copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) with monomethoxyethyl itaconate (IME) and dimethoxyethyl itaconate (IDE) was studied, using various molar relations AAm/itaconate. The polymerization reactions were carried out both in bulk and in solution, using 2,2´- azobisisobutyronitrile and ammonium persulfate respectively as initiators. The copolymers obtained were soluble in water and these were characterized by means FTIR spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA and DTGA). The copolymers AAm/IDE were obtained with high yields and they were thermally stable up to 200ºC, whereas the yields of the copolymers AAm/IME were lower and they were stable up to 150ºC. Finally, hydrogels AAm/IME and AAm/IDE were prepared using the molar relation AAm/Itaconate 80/20 with 1% of crosslinking agent. It was found that swelling of these hydrogels was higher than those obtained with AAm in the same experimental conditions.
