El dolor lumbar es un problema de salud global y su nivel de discapacidad depende, entre otras variables, de las creencias negativas de los pacientes respecto del dolor. Evidencia sostiene que dichas creencias están asociadas con las que poseen sus profesionales tratantes, por lo que es importante identificar cómo evolucionan durante la formación de pregrado de los profesionales sanitarios. El objetivo de este estudio transversal fue determinar la presencia de creencias negativas sobre dolor lumbar en estudiantes de fisioterapia y compararlas entre distintos cursos del ciclo formativo. Participaron estudiantes de segundo a quinto año de fisioterapia de una universidad chilena, quienes completaron una encuesta basada en los siete mitos sobre dolor lumbar de Deyo y respondieron según su grado de acuerdo con los enunciados. Los resultados fueron comparados entre los diferentes niveles. 127 estudiantes completaron la encuesta (57 hombres y 70 mujeres). Los mitos 1, 2, 4, 6 y 7 se presentaron con mayor frecuencia en segundo año y tendieron a disminuir progresivamente en los cursos superiores. Los mitos 3 y 5 presentaron un patrón distributivo menos claro. Los estudiantes de segundo nivel presentaron un mayor grado de acuerdo con los mitos, los de tercer nivel presentaron mayor inseguridad en las respuestas, mientras que los alumnos de cuarto y quinto nivel presentaron mayor desacuerdo con los mitos. En conclusión, las creencias negativas sobre dolor lumbar pueden encontrarse presentes en estudiantes de fisioterapia, pero éstas tienden a modificarse positivamente a lo largo de su proceso formativo. Low back pain is a global health problem, and its level of disability depends, among other variables, on patients' negative beliefs regarding pain. Evidence supports that these beliefs are associated with those held by their treating professionals, so it is important to identify how they evolve during the undergraduate training of health professionals. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the presence of negative beliefs about low back pain in physical therapy students and compare them between different courses of the training cycle. Second, to fifth-year physiotherapy students from a Chilean university participated; they completed a survey based on Deyo's seven myths about low back pain and responded according to their degree of agreement with the statements. The results were compared between the different levels. 127 students completed the survey (57 males and 70 females). Myths 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 were presented more frequently in the second year and tended to decrease progressively in higher grades. Myths 3 and 5 presented a less clear distributional pattern. Second-level students presented a higher degree of agreement with the myths, and third-level students presented greater insecurity in the answers. In contrast, fourth and fifth-level students presented greater disagreement with the myths. In conclusion, negative beliefs about low back pain may be present in physical therapy students, but these tend to modify positively throughout their formative process. El propósito de este estudio fue analizar la efectividad de diversas estrategias de calentamiento sobre el rendimiento en pruebas contrarreloj hasta 200-m, mediante una revisión rápida de la literatura. Utilizando directrices PRISMA, se realizó una búsqueda en la base de datos MEDLINE/Pubmed considerando estudios experimentales desde el año 2013. La calidad metodológica se evaluó mediante la escala PEDro. De 181 registros iniciales se incluyeron finalmente 16 estudios. Todos presentaron un diseño metodológico cruzado con calidad baja (tres estudios), regular (12 estudios) y buena (un estudio). Participó un total de 161 hombres y 75 mujeres con edad media de 17.96 años, compitiendo a nivel universitario, nacional o internacional. Estrategias de calentamiento activo en el agua mejoraron el tiempo de la prueba hasta en un 1.48%. La reducción de la fase de transición posterior a la realización de calentamiento activo en el agua mejoró el tiempo hasta en un 1.50%. Estrategias adicionales al calentamiento activo en el agua, mejoraron el tiempo hasta en un 2.04%. A partir de esta revisión, se concluye que no existe suficiente evidencia que sustente el uso de las diversas estrategias de calentamiento sobre el rendimiento en pruebas contrarreloj; no obstante, sus porcentajes de reducción del tiempo representan una opción interesante para nadadores y entrenadores en entornos competitivos. Abstract. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of various warm-up strategies on time trial performance up to 200-m through a rapid literature review. Using PRISMA guidelines, a search was performed in the MEDLINE/Pubmed database considering experimental studies since 2013. Methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. From 181 initial records, 16 studies were finally included. All presented a crossover methodological design with low (three studies), fair (12 studies), and good (one study) quality. A total of 161 men and 75 women participated, with a mean age of 17.96 years, competing at university, national, or international levels. In-water active warm-up strategies improved time trial performance by up to 1.48%. Reducing the transition phase after in-water active warm-up improved time by up to 1.50%. Strategies added to in-water active warm-up improved time by up to 2.04%. From this review, we conclude that there is insufficient evidence to support using different warm-up strategies on time trial performance; however, their time reduction percentages represent an interesting option for swimmers and coaches in competitive environments. The purpose of this study was to determine the reference values of the velocity of execution of the five Sit-to-Stand in older adults through a systematic review of the literature. Three databases were reviewed: Medline (PubMed), Scopus and Web of Science, with the deadline of March 2021. The search terms were: "sit to stand" OR "stand to sit" OR "chair rise" OR "chair rising" AND "kinematic" OR "velocity". The experimental studies were evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Assessment (QUADAS) scale by independent reviewers. A total of seven studies were included. The velocity of execution in older adults (n=85) that presented neurological health conditions was between 0.33 m/s and 0.38 m/s. In the healthy (n=246) ones it was between 0.27 m/s and 0.94 m/s. Between 60 to 70 years (n=157) it was from 0.31 m/s and 1.59 m/s, and from 70 to 80 years (n=225) it was from 0.27 m/s and 1.04 m/s. The execution velocity of five Sit-to-Stand in older adults ranges from a minimum of 0.27 m/s to a maximum of 1.59 m/s for the complete stop-and-sit cycle. These antecedents may be useful to predict or detect functional alterations and disability. Resumen.El propósito de este estudio fue determinar los valores de referencia de la prueba sentado-de pie de cinco repeticiones en adultos mayores a través de una revisión sistemática de la literatura. Se revisaron tres bases de datos: Medline (PubMed), Scopus y Web of Science con fecha límite Marzo del 2021. Background: A progressive volitional cycling test is useful in determining exercise prescription in populations with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. However, little is known about the association between heart rate during this test and endothelial dysfunction (EDys) parameters in hypertensive (HTN) patients. Objective: To investigate the association between EDys markers (flow-mediated dilation [FMD], pulse wave velocity of the brachial artery [PWVba], and carotid-intima media thickness [cIMT]) and heart rate during a cycling test in HTN adults. A secondary aim was to characterize cardiovascular, anthropometric, and body composition outcomes in this population. Methods: This was a descriptive clinical study in which adults (men and women) were assigned to one of three groups: HTN, elevated blood pressure (Ele), or a normotensive control group (CG), and completed a progressive cycling test. The primary outcomes were FMD, PWVba, cIMT, and heart rate (HR) at 25–50 watts (HR25–50), 50–100 watts (HR50–100), and 75–150 watts (HR75–150) of the Astrand test. Secondary outcomes included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, body fat percentage (BF%), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), resting metabolic rate (RMR), and estimated body age, as measured by a bio-impedance digital scale. Results: Analyses of the associations between FMD, PWV, and HR25–50, HR50–100, and HR75–150 watts revealed no significant association in the HTN, Ele, and CG groups. However, a significant association was found between cIMT and HR75–150 watts in the HTN group (R2 47.1, β −0.650, p = 0.038). There was also a significant trend (p = 0.047) towards increasing PWVba in the CG, Ele, and HTN groups. Conclusion: Heart rate during a progressive cycling test is associated with the EDys parameters cIMT in HTN patients, with particularly strong predictive capacity for vascular parameters in the second and third stages of the Astrand exercise test compared to normotensive control. Review question / Objective: To analyze the evidence on studies that have manipulated the variables that make up the strength training stimulus and its effects on motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease. Condition being studied: Parkinson's is a multisystemic neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system and is caused by a loss of dopaminergic neurons in the compact part of the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia of the midbrain. People with Parkinson's disease (PEP) have non-motor and motor clinical symptoms. Classic motor symptoms are rest tremor, joint stiffness, bradykinesia, decreased balance, gait disturbances (speed, temporality, spatiality, support, and freezing) and decreased functional performance.

Currently, greater background is required about the effectiveness of myofascial release (MFR) on muscle flexibility.Our goal was to determine the immediate effect of a direct MFR technique on hip and cervical flexibility in inactive females with hamstring shortening.The sample group included 68 female university students, randomly divided into a control group (n = 34) and an experimental group (n = 34). A placebo technique was used with the control group, and direct MFR on the posterior thigh region was used with the experimental group.The mixed factorial ANOVA did not show significant intergroup differences (p 0.05). In the experimental group, Bonferroni post hoc test showed significant intragroup differences between pre-test and post-test 1, as well as between pre-test and post-test 2 for the three ischiotibial muscle flexibility tests (p 0.001). Cervical flexion range of motion showed significant differences between pre-test and post-test 1 (p 0.001).We conclude that the protocol based on a single direct MFR intervention was no more effective than the placebo in improving flexibility both locally at the hamstring level and remotely at the level of the cervical extensor muscles. Future research should consider different MFR techniques on the immediate increase in muscle flexibility and the long-term effect of MFR, as well as consider different intervention groups.

Review question / Objective: In competitive swimmers, are warm-up strategies effective in improving time trial performance? The aim of this systematized narrative review is to analyze the state of the art regarding the effectiveness of warm-up strategies on time trial performance in competitive swimmers. Condition being studied: Effects of active, passive or mixed warm-up strategies on performance in time trials equal to or less than 200 meters applied in healthy competitive swimmers over 15 years of age. Information sources: An electronic search of the MEDLINE database was performed through PubMed.

Background: Maximal voluntary isometric handgrip strength (MVIHS) is influenced by age, sex, and handedness. Aim: To assess the association of MVIHS with age, sex, and handedness in older adults. Material and Methods: MVIHS was measured using a digital dynamometer in 60 men and 60 women aged 73 ± 6 years. Weight, height and handedness were also recorded. For analysis purposes, participants were divided into two age groups (65 to 70.9 years of age and ≥ 71 years). Results: A negative correlation was observed between age and MVIHS in the non-dominant (r = −0.65 and −0.59 in men and women, respectively) and dominant hands (r = −0.71 and −0.64 in men and women, respectively). When age and MVIHS were correlated in the group aged 65-70 years, a significant correlation was observed in the non-dominant (r = −045 and −0.61 in men and women, respectively) and dominant hands (r = −0.47 and −0.64 in men and women, respectively). In the group aged ≥ 71 years, a stronger correlation with age was also observed in the non-dominant (r = −0.92 and −0.90 in men and women, respectively) and dominant hands (r = −0.95 and −0.90 in men and women, respectively). MVIHS was 2.8 to 8.9% lower in the non-dominant than in the dominant hand in all age groups. MVIHS was lower in women than in men in both age groups. Conclusions: MVIHS declines with age (especially after 71 years of age), is higher in men than women, and higher in the dominant than the non-dominant hand.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability for the strength and movement velocity of the concentric phase from the five Sit-to-Stand (5STS), using three incremental loads measured by a functional electromechanical dynamometer (FEMD) in healthy young adults. Methods: The average and peak strength and velocity values of sixteen healthy adults (mean ± standard deviation (SD): age = 22.81 ± 2.13 years) were recorded at 5, 10 and 15 kg. To evaluate the reliability of FEMD, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and coefficient of variation (CV) were obtained. Results: Reliability was high for the 10 kg (CV range: 3.70–4.18%, ICC range: 0.95–0.98) and 15 kg conditions (CV range: 1.64–3.02%, ICC: 0.99) at average and peak strength, and reliability was high for the 5 kg (CV range: 1.71–2.84%, ICC range: 0.96–0.99), 10 kg (CV range: 0.74–1.84%, ICC range: 0.99–1.00) and 15 kg conditions (CV range: 0.79–3.11%, ICC range: 0.99–1.00) at average and peak velocity. Effect of traditional, cluster, and rest redistribution set configurations on neuromuscular and perceptual responses during strength-oriented resistance training. J Strength Cond Res 36(6): 1490-1497, 2022-This study aimed to compare the acute effect of traditional (TR), cluster (CL), and rest redistribution (RR) set configurations on neuromuscular and perceptual measures of fatigue. Thirty-one resistance-trained men randomly performed a Control session and 3 experimental sessions consisting of the squat (SQ) and bench press (BP) exercises performed against the 10 repetition maximum load using TR (3 sets of 6 repetitions; 3 minutes of interset rest), CL (3 sets of 6 repetitions; 30 seconds of intraset rest every 2 repetitions; 3 minutes of interset rest), and RR (9 sets of 2 repetitions; 45 seconds of interset rest) set configurations. A significant effect of "set configuration" (p = 0.002) was observed for barbell velocity. The average velocity of the training session was lower for TR compared with CL (% difference = 5.09% in SQ and 5.68% in BP) and RR (% difference = 5.92% in SQ and 2.71% in BP). The 3 set configurations induced comparable decrements in countermovement jump height (% difference from -6.0% to -8.1%) and throwing velocity (% difference from -0.6% to -1.2%). Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE-10) values collected after the sets were higher for TR (SQ: 6.9 ± 0.7 a.u.; BP: 6.8 ± 0.8 a.u.) compared with CL (SQ: 6.2 ± 0.8 a.u.; BP: 6.4 ± 0.7 a.u.) and RR (SQ: 6.2 ± 0.8 a.u.; BP: 6.6 ± 0.9 a.u.), while the session RPE did not differ between the set configurations (p = 0.595). CL and RR set configurations allow for higher velocities and lower RPE values during resistance training sessions not performed to failure in comparison with a TR set configuration.

We would like to thank the Pleokinetic Network and the students of Catholic University of Most Holy Conception for making this study possible., Aim To determine the absolute and relative reliability of functional trunk tests, using a functional electromechanical dynamometer to evaluate the isokinetic strength of trunk flexors and to determine the most reliable assessment condition, in order to compare the absolute and relative reliability of mean force and peak force of trunk flexors and to determine which isokinetic condition of evaluation is best related to the maximum isometric. Methods Test-retest of thirty-seven physically active male student volunteers who performed the different protocols, isometric contraction and the combination of three velocities (V1 = 015 m s−1 , V2 = 0.30 m s−1, V3 = 0.45 m s−1) and two range of movement (R1 = 25% cm ; R2 = 50% cm) protocols. Results All protocols to evaluate trunk flexors showed an absolute reliability provided a stable repeatability for isometric and dynamic protocols with a coefficient of variation (CV) being below 10% and a high or very high relative reliability (0.69 < intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] > 0.86). The more reliable strength manifestation (CV = 6.82%) to evaluate the concentric contraction of trunk flexors was mean force, with 0.15 m s−1 and short range of movement (V1R1) condition. The most reliable strength manifestation to evaluate the eccentric contraction of trunk flexors was peak force, with 0.15 m s−1 and a large range of movement (V1R2; CV = 5.07%), and the most reliable way to evaluate isometric trunk flexors was by peak force (CV = 7.72%). The mean force of eccentric trunk flexor strength with 0.45 m s−1 and short range of movement (V3R1) condition (r = 0.73) was best related to the maximum isometric contraction. Conclusion Functional electromechanical dynamometry is a reliable evaluation system for assessment of trunk flexor strength.

This study examined the reliability and validity of three methods of estimating the one-repetition maximum (1RM) during the free-weight prone bench pull exercise. Twenty-six men (22 rowers and four weightlifters) performed an incremental loading test until reaching their 1RM, followed by a set of repetitions-to-failure. Eighteen participants were re-tested to conduct the reliability analysis. The 1RM was estimated through the lifts-to-failure equations proposed by Lombardi and O'Connor, general load-velocity (L-V) relationships proposed by Sánchez-Medina and Loturco and the individual L-V relationships modelled using four (multiple-point method) or only two loads (two-point method). The direct method provided the highest reliability (coefficient of variation [CV] = 2.45% and intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.97), followed by the Lombardi's equation (CV = 3.44% and ICC = 0.94), and no meaningful differences were observed between the remaining methods (CV range = 4.95-6.89% and ICC range = 0.81-0.91). The lifts-to-failure equations overestimated the 1RM (3.43-4.08%), the general L-V relationship proposed by Sánchez-Medina underestimated the 1RM (-3.77%), and no significant differences were observed for the remaining prediction methods (-0.40-0.86%). The individual L-V relationship could be recommended as the most accurate method for predicting the 1RM during the free-weight prone bench pull exercise.

Introducción: La antropometría y condición física funcional (CFF) son aspectos fundamentales para la conservación de la independencia funcional del adulto mayor (AM). Sin embargo, poco se ha investigado en AM chilenos. Objetivo: Analizar características antropométricas y CFF de AM autovalentes. Métodos: Participaron 116 sujetos del estudio. Se determinó la prevalencia de categorías de peso (Índice de Masa Corporal [IMC]) y riesgo cardiometabólico (RCM) (Perímetro Cintura [PCIN], Índice Cintura-Cadera [ICC] e Índice Cintura-Talla [ICT]). Además, rendimiento físico “bajo la norma” y estándares de rendimiento (Batería Senior Fitness Test [SFT]). Se analizaron las diferencias antropométricas y de CFF en función del sexo y categorías etarias. Resultados: Un 63,8% y 73,5% de hombres y mujeres respectivamente presentó exceso de peso. La mayor prevalencia de RCM se obtuvo mediante ICT y las pruebas con mayor prevalencia de bajo rendimiento fueron “Paso 2 minutos” (P2M) y “Juntar las manos detrás de la espalda” (JME). El estándar de rendimiento se alcanzó en un 29,7% y 17,3%, en hombres y mujeres respectivamente. Hombres presentaron mayor talla, ICC, fuerza y capacidad aeróbica. Mujeres presentaron mayor perímetro de cadera, IMC, ICT y flexibilidad. Estos resultados tienden a conservarse en los análisis de acuerdo a categorías etarias. Conclusiones: La muestra presentó una alta prevalencia de exceso de peso, RCM y bajo rendimiento físico especialmente en mujeres. Debido a su bajo costo y complejidad, se plantea que la evaluación integral de parámetros antropométricos y de CFF, debiese implementarse en programas de atención primaria orientados a la conservación de la funcionalidad del AM.

We report a case of a 53-year-old woman affected by a left kidney stone and persistent positive urinary culture treated by retrograde intrarenal surgery. During postoperative day 1, she developed a sudden back pain associated with a decrease in hemoglobin. CT scan showed a subcapsular hematoma giving the impression of partial compression of kidney and upper urinary tract. For that reason, in the first instance, a Double-J ureteral stent was installed. Unfortunately, an open surgical drainage was necessary because a secondary infection of the hematoma was evident during the following days.

Introduction: the regular practice of physical exercise is an important modulator of resting energy expenditure (REE), which depending on the intensity, duration, and type of exercise can increase the REE in an acute manner as well as long term. The effects of dynamic muscular strength exercises on the REE have been treated very little in literature. Objective: compare the effect of muscle strength exercise (MSE) at different intensities on the REE in young males. Methods: Intra-group design. Fourteen subjects aged 22,5±1,5 0,05) after the exercise at 40%RM. The REEpost 24h was maintained according to the REEpre when the intensity was 80%RM. Conclusion: The REEpost exercise is independent of the intensity of the exercise and only is maintained after 24 hours when the MSE is at a high intensity.

Aim: To seek for an association between PF and HRQOL in non-disabled community- dwelling Chilean older adults. Material and Methods: One hundred and sixteen subjects participated in the study. PF was assessed using the Senior Fitness Test (SFT) and hand grip strength (HGS). HRQOL was assessed using eight dimensions provided by the SF-12v2 questionnaire. Binary multivariate logistic regression models were carried out considering the potential influence of confounder variables. Results: Non-adjusted models, indicated that subjects with better performance in arm curl test (ACT) were more likely to score higher on vitality dimension (OR > 1) and those with higher HGS were more likely to score higher on physical functioning, bodily pain, vitality and mental health (OR > 1). The adjusted models consistently showed that ACT and HGS predicted a favorable perception of vitality and mental health dimensions respectively (OR > 1). IntroducciónEl trasplante celular consiste en la inyección de células madre de médula ósea en los bordes de la zona fibrótica del infarto con la finalidad de promover el desarrollo de angiogénesis para mejorar la capacidad funcional de los pacientes con insuficiencia cardíaca.MétodosDe junio de 2004 a julio de 2006, 28 pacientes con infarto de miocardio previo y fracción de eyección (20-30%) fueron operados en el Departamento de Cirugía de Tórax y Cardiovascular del Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins. En 17 de ellos se realizó derivación coronaria (DC) asociada a trasplante de células madre de médula ósea (grupo de estudio), y en 11 se realizó DC (grupo control). Las células madre fueron implantadas en las zonas periinfarto sin viabilidad miocárdica y las DC fueron colocadas en las zonas viables.ResultadosEl índice de contractilidad pre y postoperatorio fue de 2,17-2,25 y de 2,19-1,60 en el grupo control y estudio, respectivamente. La fracción de eyección se incrementó en 8,6 y 56,4% del basal en el grupo control y de estudio (p=0,007). La clase funcional de la NYHA mejoró de 3,0 a 2,3 y de 3,2 a 1,6 en el grupo control y estudio, respectivamente (p=0,024)ConclusionesEl trasplante de células madre asociado a DC en pacientes con infarto de miocardio previo mejora significativamente la función ventricular izquierda en relación con el grupo control, y podría retrasar o evitar la indicación del trasplante cardíaco.IntroductionCell transplantation consists is injection of bone-marrow stem-cells injection into the fibrotic border of an infracted area, in order to promote angiogenesis for improvement of the functional capacity in patients with cardiac failure.MethodsFrom June 2004 to July 2006, 28 patients with previous myocardial infarction and ejection fraction (20-30%) were operated at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery - Edgardo Rebagliati Hospital. In 17, coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) associated to bone-marrow stem-cells transplantation (study group) and in 11 CABG (control group) were performed. The stem-cells were implanted in the peri-infarction non-viable myocardium and CABG in the viable myocardium.ResultsThe pre and postoperative contractile index was 2.17-2.25 and 2.19-1.60 in the control and study group, respectively. The ejection fraction improved in 8.6 and 56.4% of the baseline in the control and study groups (p < 0.007). NYHA functional class improved from 3.0 to 2.3 and from 3.2 to 1.6 in the control and study groups, respectively (p=0.0024).ConclusionsStem-cell transplantation associated to CABG in patients with previous myocardial infarction improves the left ventricular function in relation to the control group, and could delay or avoid heart transplantation.

Aim: To describe differences in grip strength for age, gender and upper extremity handedness in non-disabled community-dwelling older adults. Material and Methods: We studied 47 males aged 72.3 ± 5.6 years and 69 females 72.4 ± 6.0 years who were divided in two age groups (65-70 and ≥ 71 years old). Grip strength was determined by a standardized protocol using a hand dynamometer. Results: There was an inverse correlation between grip strength and age in both hands only among men (p ≤ 0.05). When analyzing both genders, there was a significant inverse correlation between grip strength and age only in the dominant hand (p ≤ 0.05). Strength was higher in the dominant hand in both genders (p ≤ 0.05). It was also higher in men, compared to women in the two age groups studied (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Grip strength is higher in men than women, it decreases with age and is higher in the dominant hand. Tesis (Kinesiólogo) Todo proceso rehabilitador debe ser capaz de cuantificar sus objetivos para evidenciar los progresos. Actualmente la fuerza excéntrica ha demostrado ser un buen indicador de funcionalidad, debido a esto, es importante su valoración. La dinamometría electromecánica funcional en modalidad isocinética es considerada como gold standard de la cuantificación de fuerza muscular. Dentro de los diferentes dispositivos disponibles en el mercado, se encuentra el dinamómetro electromecánico Haefni Health System 1.0, el cual ha demostrado ser una herramienta útil, válida y fiable para determinadas pruebas de rotadores de hombro y diferentes gestos motores. No obstante, la literatura disponible respecto a este dispositivo muestra escasa evidencia respecto a la medición de fuerza y potencia excéntrica isocinética excluyendo el factor biológico.
