Antihydrogen atoms are a unique type of antimatter that can be used to probe small violations of fundamental laws of physics. The authors present experimental results obtained with the AEgIS project at CERN for the production of antihydrogen atoms (Hbar) via charge exchange with laser excited positronium that allow for precise timing of Hbar production.

Abstract

We present a conceptual design for a compact X-ray Source BriXS (Bright and compact X-ray Source). BriXS, the first stage of the Marix project, is an Inverse Compton Source (ICS) of X-ray based on superconducting cavities technology for the electron beam with energy recirculation and on a laser system in Fabry-Pérot cavity at a repetition rate of 100 MHz, producing 20−180 keV monochromatic X-Rays devoted mainly to medical applications. An energy recovery scheme based on a modified folded push-pull CW-SC twin Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) ensemble allows us to sustain an MW-class beam power with almost one hundred kW active power dissipation/consumption.

Abstract

The AEg̅IS collaboration at CERN’s AD produces antihydrogen atoms in the form of a pulsed, isotropic source with a precisely defined formation time. AEg̅IS has recently undergone major upgrades to fully benefit from the increased number of colder antiprotons provided by the new ELENA decelerator and to move toward forming a horizontal beam to directly investigate the influence of gravity on the H̅ atoms, thereby probing the Weak Equivalence Principle for antimatter. This contribution gives an overview of these upgrades as well as subsequent results from the first beam times with ELENA.

Abstract

Mechanisms for remote execution of computational tasks enable a distributed system to effectively utilize all available resources. This ability is essential to attaining the objectives of high availability, system reliability, and graceful degradation and directly contribute to flexibility, adaptability, and incremental growth. As part of a national fabric of Distributed High Throughput Computing (dHTC) services, remote execution is a cornerstone of the Open Science Grid (OSG) Compute Federation. Most of the organizations that harness the computing capacity provided by the OSG also deploy HTCondor pools on resources acquired from the OSG. The HTCondor Compute Entrypoint (CE) facilitates the remote acquisition of resources by all organizations. The HTCondor-CE is the product of a most recent translational cycle that is part of a multidecade translational process. The process is rooted in a partnership, between members of the High Energy Physics community and computer scientists, that evolved over three decades and involved testing and evaluation with active users and production infrastructures. Through several translational cycles that involved researchers from different organizations and continents, principles, ideas, frameworks and technologies were translated into a widely adopted software artifact that isresponsible for provisioning of approximately 9 million core hours per day across 170 endpoints.

Abstract

International audience; The AEGIS experiment 1 (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is planned to perform the first measurement of the gravitational acceleration on antimatter by observing the free fall of antihydrogen atoms. By combining techniques based on recent developments in the production of positronium and its laser excitation to Rydberg states, such a study seems indeed to be feasible for neutral antimatter. We present here some of the experimental techniques involved in the experiment as well as the status of the detector test envisioned for the gravity measurement.

Abstract

The workload management task of the DataGrid project was mandated to define and implement a suitable architecture for distributed scheduling and resource management in a Grid environment. The result was the design and implementation of a Grid Workload Management System, a super-scheduler with the distinguishing property of being able to take data access requirements into account when scheduling jobs to the available Grid resources. Many novel issues in various fields were faced such as resource management, resource reservation and co-allocation, Grid accounting. In this paper, the architecture and the functionality provided by the DataGrid Workload Management System are presented.

Abstract

The gLite Workload Management System (WMS) is a collection of components that provide the service responsible for distributing and managing tasks across computing and storage resources available on a Grid. The WMS basically receives requests of job execution from a client, finds the required appropriate resources, then dispatches and follows the jobs until completion, handling failure whenever possible. Other than single batch-like jobs, compound job types handled by the WMS are Directed Acyclic Graphs (a set of jobs where the input/output/execution of one of more jobs may depend on one or more other jobs), Parametric Jobs (multiple jobs with one parametrized description), and Collections (multiple jobs with a common description). Jobs are described via a flexible, high-level Job Definition Language (JDL). New functionality was recently added to the system (use of Service Discovery for obtaining new service endpoints to be contacted, automatic sandbox files archival/compression and sharing, support for bulk-submission and bulk-matchmaking). Intensive testing and troubleshooting allowed to dramatically increase both job submission rate and service stability. Future developments of the gLite WMS will be focused on reducing external software dependency, improving portability, robustness and usability.

Abstract

The EU-funded project EMI, now at its second year, aims at providing a unified, high quality middleware distribution for e-Science communities. Several aspects about workload management over diverse distributed computing environments are being challenged by the EMI roadmap: enabling seamless access to both HTC and HPC computing services, implementing a commonly agreed framework for the execution of parallel computations and supporting interoperability models between Grids and Clouds. Besides, a rigourous requirements collection process, involving the WLCG and various NGIs across Europe, assures that the EMI stack is always committed to serving actual needs. With this background, the gLite Workload Management System (WMS), the meta-scheduler service delivered by EMI, is augmenting its functionality and scheduling models according to the aforementioned project roadmap and the numerous requirements collected over the first project year. This paper is about present and future work of the EMI WMS, reporting on design changes, implementation choices and longterm vision.

Abstract

The European Middleware Initiative (EMI) project aims to deliver a consolidated set of middleware products based on the four major middleware providers in Europe -ARC, dCache, gLite and UNICORE. The CREAM (Computing Resource Execution And Management) Service, a service for job management operation at the Computing Element (CE) level, is a software product which is part of the EMI middleware distribution. In this paper we discuss about some new functionality in the CREAM CE introduced with the first EMI major release (EMI-1, codename Kebnekaise). The integration with the Argus authorization service is one of these implementations: the use of a unique authorization system, besides simplifying the overall management, allows also to avoid inconsistent authorization decisions. An improved support for complex deployment scenarios (e.g. for sites having multiple CE head nodes and/or having heterogeneous resources) is another new achievement. The improved support for resource allocation in a multi-core environment, and the initial support of version 2.0 of the Glue specification for resource publication are other new functionalities introduced with the first EMI release.

Abstract

The EU-funded project EMI aims at providing a unified, standardized, easy to install software for distributed computing infrastructures. CREAM is one of the middleware products part of the EMI middleware distribution: it implements a Grid job management service which allows the submission, management and monitoring of computational jobs to local resource management systems. In this paper we discuss about some new features being implemented in the CREAM Computing Element. The implementation of the EMI Execution Service (EMI-ES) specification (an agreement in the EMI consortium on interfaces and protocols to be used in order to enable computational job submission and management required across technologies) is one of the new functions being implemented. New developments are also focusing in the High Availability (HA) area, to improve performance, scalability, availability and fault tolerance.

Abstract

With the advent of the recent European Union (EU) funded projects aimed at achieving an open, coordinated and proactive collaboration among the European communities that provide distributed computing services, more strict requirements and quality standards will be asked to middleware providers. Such a highly competitive and dynamic environment, organized to comply a business-oriented model, has already started pursuing quality criteria, thus requiring to formally define rigorous procedures, interfaces and roles for each step of the software life-cycle. This will ensure quality-certified releases and updates of the Grid middleware. In the European Middleware Initiative (EMI), the release management for one or more components will be organized into Product Team (PT) units, fully responsible for delivering production ready, quality-certified software and for coordinating each other to contribute to the EMI release as a whole. This paper presents the certification process, with respect to integration, installation, configuration and testing, adopted at INFN by the Product Team responsible for the gLite Web-Service based Computing Element (CREAM CE) and for the Workload Management System (WMS). The used resources, the testbeds layout, the integration and deployment methods, the certification steps to provide feedback to developers and to grant quality results are described.

Abstract

The CREAM CE implements a Grid job management service available to end users and to other higher level Grid job submission services. It allows the submission, management and monitoring of computational jobs to local resource management systems. CREAM, which is part of the gLite Grid middleware, is available in the EGI production Grid where it is used by several user communities in different job submission scenarios. In this paper, after a quick description of the CREAM CE architecture and functionality, we report on the status of this Grid service, focusing on the results, feedback and issues that had to be addressed. We also discuss about its integration with other job submission services, in particular the gLite Workload Management System. The planned future activities, concerning the maintenance and evolution of the CREAM CE, are reported as well.

Abstract

The High Throughput Computing paradigm typically involves a scenario whereby a given, estimated processing power is made available and sustained by the computing environment over a medium/long period of time. As a consequence, the performance goals are in general targeted at maximizing resource utilization to obtain the expected throughput, rather than minimizing run time for individual jobs. This does not mean that optimal resource selection through adequate workload management is not desired nor effective, nonetheless, relatively small and pre-assessed percentages of suboptimal choices or unexpected events can be tolerated. However, there are use-cases, among the HEP community, for which the described model does not immediately fit. This paper deals with the workload needs primarily driven by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experimental collaboration. In particular, the CDF analysis facility (CAF) typically operates by splitting its computations into so-called sections, which can be seen as sets of uniform and independent jobs. Processing a section cannot be considered completed until all _its jobs have been successfully executed, thus requiring a Minimum Completion Time (MCT) dynamic scheduling policy where not even a single job should lay in non-terminal Grid states. A significant part of the CDF analysis is processed on the European Grid infrastructure through the gLite Workload Management System (WMS) [2]. This paper describes the design enhancements and ranking algorithms the WMS has been provided with to implement an adaptive scheduling policy to minimise MCT. Case study, outlined approach and first results are presented.

Abstract

In the framework of WLCG, Tier-is need to manage large volumes of data ranging in the PB scale. Moreover they need to be able to transfer data, from CERN and with the other centres (both Tier-is and Tier-2s) with a sustained throughput of the order of hundreds of MB/s over the WAN offering at the same time a fast and reliable access also to the computing farm. In order to cope with these challenging requirements, at INFN Tier-1 we have adopted a storage model based on StoRM/GPFS/TSM for the D1T0 and D1T1 Storage Classes and on CASTOR for the D0T1. In this paper we present the results of the commissioning tests of this system for the ATLAS experiment reproducing the real production case with a full matrix transfer from the Tier-0 and with all the other involved centres. Noticeably also the new approach of direct file access from farm to data is covered showing positive results. GPFS/StoRM has also been sucessfully deployed, configured and commissioned as storage solution for an ATLAS INFN Tier-2, specifically the one of Milano. The results are shown and discussed in this paper together with the ones obtained for the Tier-1.

Abstract

The gLite Workload Management System represents a key entry point to high-end services available on a Grid. Being designed as part of the european Grid within the six years long EU-funded EGEE project, now at its third phase, the WMS is meant to provide reliable and efficient distribution and management of end-user requests. This service basically translates user requirements and preferences into specific operations and decisions - dictated by the general status of all other Grid services - while taking responsibility to bring requests to successful completion. The WMS has become a reference implementation of the ″early binding″ approach to meta-scheduling as a neat, Grid-aware solution, able to optimise resource access and to satisfy requests for computation together with data. Several added value features are provided for job submission, different job types are supported from simple batch to a variety of compounds. In this paper we outline what has been achieved to provide adequate workload and management components, suitable to be deployed in a production-quality Grid, while covering the design and development of the gLite WMS and focusing on the most recently achieved results. Abstract

AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is an experiment that aims to perform the first direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration g of antihydrogen in the Earth’s field. A cold antihydrogen beam will be produced by charge exchange reaction between cold antiprotons and positronium excited in Rydberg states. Rydberg positronium (with quantum number n between 20 and 30) will be produced by a two steps laser excitation. The antihydrogen beam, after being accelerated by Stark effect, will fly through the gratings of a moir´e deflectometer. The deflection of the horizontal beam due to its free fall will be measured by a position sensitive detector. It is estimated that the detection of about 103 antihydrogen atoms is required to determine the gravitational acceleration with a precision of 1%. In this report an overview of the AEgIS experiment is presented and its current status is described. Details on the production of slow positronium and its excitation with lasers are discussed.
