Saltwater intrusion (SWI) in deltas, estuaries, and other coastal areas represents a pressing problem affecting the sustainability of freshwater resources. Observations and numerical experiments are used to investigate SWI in the surface waters of the Italian's largest river delta (the Po Delta) under low discharge conditions. The model successfully reproduced the observed salinity variations along main river branches and in the delta lagoons and investigated fresh and saltwater dynamics during the entire summer 2017. The numerical model is used to explore the hydrological response of the delta system to climate change. The relative effect of controlling factors on saltwater penetration, such as sea-level rise (SLR), air-sea fluxes, and reduction of river discharge, was evaluated. Results suggest that changes driven by climate and SLR will exacerbate SWI in the surface waters of the Po Delta system. Extent of SWI in the major river branch is projected to increase up to 80% further into the river. Persistence of SWI at the same site is expected to increase 100% longer. Moreover, additional synthetic simulations were used to investigate the sensitivity of SWI to several river discharges and relative SLR values, highlighting the effects of the two factors in the delta. Such results show different combinations of river discharge and relative SLR values that represent possible scenarios, and are important for managing SWI in river-sea systems affected by both climatic and anthropogenic factors such as discharge changes from dam construction, land use, and irrigation.

The paper shows for the first time the observational evidence of basin-wide gyre reversal in the Gulf of Taranto (north-western Ionian Sea in the eastern Mediterranean Sea) by means of two specifically designed in situ oceanographic campaigns (based on CTD and ADCP measurements). The analysis of the in situ data shows a change in circulation from anticyclonic in October 2014 to cyclonic in June-July 2016. Furthermore, long-term (1993-2018) analysis using gridded satellite altimetry data in the Gulf of Taranto shows that the cyclonic gyres are more frequent than anticyclonic gyres. The latter occur only for 2 to 3 years at a time in some decades. Plain Language Summary The work shows the observational evidence of a phenomenon named gyre reversal (the circulation changes from cyclonic to anticyclonic), occurring in ocean regions with specific geometry characteristics, among others the Gulfs. In particular, our results unequivocally show for the first time the reversal of the basin-scale gyre circulation in the Gulf of Taranto (north-western Ionian Sea in the eastern Mediterranean Sea), by means of in situ oceanographic measurements and satellite data.

The lagoons of the Po River delta are potentially exposed to complex mixtures of contaminants, nevertheless, there is a substantial lack of information about the biological effects of these contaminants in the Po delta lagoons. These environments are highly dynamic and the interactions between chemical and environmental stressors could prevent the proper identification of biological effects and their causes. In this study, we aimed to disentangle such interactions focusing on Manila clams, previously exposed to six lagoons of the Po delta, adopting three complementary tools: a) the detailed description via modelling techniques of lagoon dynamics for salinity and water temperature; b) the response sensitivity of a number of target genes (ahr, cyp4, ρ-gst, σ-gst, hsp22, hsp70, hsp90, ikb, dbh, ach, cat, Mn-sod, Cu/Zn-sod, cyp-a, flp, grx, TrxP) investigated in clam digestive glands by Real Time PCR; and c) the relevance of DNA adducts determined in clams as markers of exposure to genotoxic chemicals. The lagoons showed specific dynamics, and two of them (Marinetta and Canarin) could induce osmotic stress. A group of genes (ahr, cyp4, Mn-sod, σ-gst, hsp-22, cyp-a, TrxP) seemed to be associated with overall lagoon characteristics as may be described by salinity and its variations. Lagoon modelling and a second group of genes (hsp70, hsp90, cat, ikb, ach, grx, Cu/Zn-sod) also suggested that moderate increases of river discharge may imply worse exposure conditions. Oxidative stress seemed to be associated with such events but it was slightly evident also under normal exposure conditions. DNA adduct formation was mainly associated with overwhelmed antioxidant defences (e.g. low Cu/Zn-sod) or seemingly with their lack of response in due time. In Po delta lagoons, Manila clam can be affected by chemical and environmental factors which can contribute to induce oxidative stress, DNA adduct formation and, ultimately, to affect clam condition and health.

The Lagoon of Nador (Morocco) has been subject to relevant man-made changes in recent years, which consisted of closing the inlet and opening a new one, wider and deeper, with long lateral jetties. In this paper, we study some of the consequences of this modification, using a 3D hydrodynamic model that allows a comparison of the two configurations (old and new inlet). This would be not possible analysing only the observations and the approach we followed is a general method that can be applied wherever man-made or natural changes affect a coastal system. We have created two numerical grids, one with the old inlet and one with the new inlet, both covering the entire lagoon and a wide part of the coastal area. Using these two configurations, fully baroclinic simulations were run for one year. The results show a significant increase of the tidal amplitude and of the water circulation inside the lagoon, with a tidal prism four times larger. The change of the tidal asymmetry from positive to negative values (−0.7 in the inlet) causes a shift toward the ebb dominance, with implications for the mid-term morphological evolution. With the new inlet the water renewal time of the lagoon decreased from 57 to 15 days and the water temperature got warmer in winter (+1 °C) and colder in summer (−2 °C). As a consequence of this, the evaporation lowered and the salinity reduced by 0.8 PSU. The seasonal variability of the water renewal time shows that the tidal forcing, the baroclinic circulation and the wind contribute to the mixing processes. The mixing capacity of the lagoon (0.7) did not change because it is an intrinsic property of the lagoon morphology and of the atmospheric forcing. Finally, we found that the change of the water renewal time, with the new inlet, is higher than the change predicted, with the old inlet, under the RCP8.5 climate change scenario.

A multiscale sampling experiment was carried out in the Gulf of Taranto (eastern Mediterranean) providing the first synoptic evidence of the large-scale circulation structure and associated mesoscale variability. The mapping of the mesoscale and large-scale geostrophic circulation showed the presence of an anticyclonic large-scale gyre occupying the central open ocean area of the Gulf of Taranto. On the periphery of the gyre upwelling is evident where surface waters are colder and saltier than at the center of the gyre. Over a 1-week period, the rim current of the gyre undergoes large changes which are interpreted as baroclinic–barotropic instabilities, generating small-scale cyclonic eddies in the periphery of the anticyclone. The eddies are generally small, one of which can be classified as a submesoscale eddy due to its size. This eddy field modulates the upwelling regime in the gyre periphery.

Analysis of the annually-averaged 2001–2010 monthly nutrient data from 13 stations in the Venice Lagoon (Italy) shows that the concentrations of dissolved nitrogen (N) species, measured as total dissolved N (TDN), have increased over time while that of phosphorus (P) species, measured as total dissolved P (TDP) have decreased. During the study period, the TDN/TDP ratio in the lagoon rose from about 46:1 to 100:1 (by atoms), a level at which the growth of benthic macroalgae is favored over that of sea grasses. The increase of the TDN/TDP ratio appears to be caused by two factors: (1) a small, but increasing amount of N in river water entering the lagoon, and (2) low P input combined with adsorption and entrapment of orthophosphate on colloidal iron oxides and carbonates at the water–sediment interface. This second mechanism would explain the increase in the TDN/TDP ratio, principally in zones of low salinity, where hydrodynamic residence times are long enough to permit N enrichment and result in macroalgal growth preferentially in the central, landward, side of the lagoon. However, an examination of the algal coverage of the lagoon floor from 2002 to 2010, indicates that while macroalgal abundance may be influenced by the N/P ratio, the spatial and temporal distribution during this period cannot be explained solely by this one feature. Nonetheless, this work points to the importance of considering the contributions that sediments in shallow lagoons make to the over-all system productivity and ecology and may be applicable to other shallow environments.

In this paper the problem of the optimisation of at-sea campaigns is tackled throughout the implementation of a near real-time decision support system (DSS) for short-term Lagrangian observing platforms. The DSS consisted of two modules: a real-time coastal-ocean forecasting system (CFS), including both hydrodynamic and particle-tracking numerical models, and a module to provide optimised deployment solutions for a set of Lagrangian current-meter buoys. The system was calibrated for a shallow water environment – the Cabras Lagoon in the western Mediterranean Sea. The DSS was then applied to provide in situ optimised measurement strategies during a Lagrangian survey campaign. The different solutions provided by the DSS were verified by real-time measurements and the system was established to be efficient in reducing the cost–benefit ratio and favouring long records and near-synoptic and non-redundant observations.

Satellite imagery provides evidence of complex mixing dynamics in the coastal zone in front of multiple mouth deltas. One peculiar feature, identified in front of the Po Delta (Italy), consists in warmer water bulges present in some periods in the coastal zone between the river mouths. Such features are evident during both high and low river discharge. Through an integrated approach based on the analysis of satellite imagery, in situ field data and a high-resolution oceanographic model, representing the whole river-delta-sea system, we investigated the relative contribution of the different forcing in controlling coastal mixing of riverine waters. The results evidence that the occurrence of these warmer saltier water bulges is due to upwelling induced by the combined action of tides and wind regimes aligned along coastline. Winds from the land and along the coast drive the upwelling through the well-known mechanism described by Ekman. The presence of river discharge enhance the water column stratification, creating the conditions in which tidal action follows the tidal straining theory. Both processes are identified in modelling results. The occurrence of these localized coastal waters with peculiar thermohaline characteristics, detectable on satellite imagery of the area, can be relevant in the definition of the freshwater areas of influence and the mechanisms of riverine water mixing in the near coastal zone. This can shed some light, eventually, on characterizing the sediment dynamics, as well as the thermohaline properties of waters in the area, and also to identify eventual impacts on the local ecosystems and fishery.

none 6 si The present work describes an operational strategy for the development of a multiscale modeling system, based on a multiple-nesting approach and open-source numerical models. The strategy was applied and validated for the Gulf of Taranto in southern Italy, scaling large-scale oceanographic model results to high-resolution coupled wave-3-D hydrodynamics simulations for the area of Mar Grande in the Taranto Sea. The spatial and temporal high-resolution simulations were performed using the open-source TELEMAC suite, forced by wind data from the COSMO-ME database, boundary wave spectra from the RON buoy at Crotone and results from the Southern Adriatic Northern Ionian coastal Forecasting System (SANIFS) regarding sea levels and current fields. Model validation was carried out using data collected in the Mar Grande basin from a fixed monitoring station and during an oceanographic campaign in October 2014. The overall agreement between measurements and model results in terms of waves, sea levels, surface currents, circulation patterns and vertical velocity profiles is deemed to be satisfactory, and the methodology followed in the process can constitute a useful tool for both research and operational applications in the same field and as support of decisions for management and design of infrastructures. In this study we investigated the hydrodynamics and the interaction between riverine and marine waters in the Po River-Delta-Sea (RDS) system (Italy). Through the application of an unstructured 3D numerical model to a domain comprising the Po river branches, seven coastal lagoons and the shelf sea, many of the hydrodispersive phenomena evolving from the interaction of the different water bodies of the RDS system were described. The model was successfully calibrated and validated for water levels, fluxes at the inlets and at the river branches, and water temperature and salinity observations. The use of such a comprehensive approach allows the characterization of the general hydrodynamics of all the components of the Po RDS system, of the water exchange between different water bodies as well as the Po river discharge distribution among all branches. The analysis of calculated coastal current patterns in the prodelta of two different years and during a flood event confirms that the Po River is the main driver of the baroclinic coastal sea circulation. However, when strong winds occur (Sirocco and Bora), the surficial circulation of the shelf area is significantly modified. Generally, the lagoons of the Po RDS system can be considered hydrodynamically active since their tidal prisms represent a relevant fraction of each lagoon's volume. The natural consequence is that the lagoons show an active flushing with water renewal times in the order of few days. The hydrodynamics is mainly forced by the tide and is locally enhanced by riverine inputs and wind. Where freshwater inputs are significant, they are responsible of the lagoons salinity patterns that show high spatial gradients (not all the lagoons are well mixed) and temporal variability. The variability of the freshwater discharges and the complex morphology of the Po RDS allows the presence of both marine and riverine environments.

Yearly averages computed from monthly and bimonthly salinity data collected between 2000 and 2009 from 13 broadly spaced stations in the Venice Lagoon were analysed in view of 30 min data collected semi-continuously during 2009 at nine similarly located stations. Data from all stations and all years indicate that, based on yearly averages, the lagoon may be divided along its major (long) axis into three areas: 1) a northern, freshwater impacted area (S = 32 PSU of low, tidally-caused, variability, and 3) an intermediate zone. Salinity changes are closely associated with rainfall events, and the incoming freshwater is consistently distributed throughout the lagoon by tidal action. Much variability is simply a result of the forward and backward motion of the tides and is not caused by a salinity change in the water itself. The consistency of the 2000–2009 data and the historical (to 1961) watershed record support the hypothesis that the Venice Lagoon has been and is currently at steady-state with respect to its salinity distribution. As such, it is conducive to the development of (at least) three separate ecosystems.

In this paper absolute dispersion of GPS-equipped drifters of the MREA14 campaign in the Mar Grande Basin of Taranto was investigated. Velocity variance and integral time scale were computed. Different procedures to infer the mean velocity from drifter data were examined. A comparison within experimental and theoretical values of the displacement variance is introduced pointing out limits and requirements of numerical dispersion models. Estimates of horizontal diffusivities are obtained and presented.

In this study the effects that lagoons exert on the barotropic tidal dynamics of a regional sea, the Adriatic Sea, were numerically explored. This semi-enclosed basin is one of the places with the highest tidal range in the Mediterranean Sea and is characterised by the presence of several lagoons in its northern part. The tidal dynamics of a system comprising the whole Adriatic Sea and the lagoons of Venice, Marano-Grado and Po Delta were investigated using an unstructured hydrodynamic model. Numerical experiments with and without lagoons reveal that even if the considered shallow water bodies represent only the 0.5 and 0.002% of the Adriatic Sea surface and volume, respectively, they significantly affect the entire Northern Adriatic Sea tidal dynamics by enhancing tidal range (by 5%) and currents (by 10%). The inclusion of lagoons in the computation improved the model performance by 25% in reproducing tidal constituents in the Adriatic Sea. The back-effect of the lagoons on the open-sea tide is due to the waves radiating from the co-oscillating lagoons into the adjacent sea. This is the first time these processes are shown to be relevant for the Adriatic Sea, thus enhancing the understanding of the tidal dynamics in this regional sea. These findings may also apply to other coastal seas with connections to lagoons, bays and estuaries.

Thirty-meters resolution turbidity maps derived from Landsat 8 (L8) images were used to investigate spatial and temporal variations of suspended matter patterns and distribution in the area of Po River prodelta (Italy) in the period from April 2013 to October 2015. The main focus of the work was the study of small and sub-mesoscale structures, linking them to the main forcings that control the fate of suspended sediments in the northern Adriatic Sea. A number of hydrologic and meteorological events of different extent and duration was captured by L8 data, quantifying how river discharge and meteo-marine conditions modulate the distribution of turbidity on- and off-shore. At sub-mesoscale, peculiar patterns and smaller structures, as multiple plumes and sand bars, were identified thanks to the unprecedented spatial and radiometric resolution of L8 sensor. The use of these satellite-derived products provides interesting information, particularly on turbidity distribution among the different delta distributaries in specific fluvial regimes that fills the knowledge gap of traditional studies based only on in situ data. A novel approach using satellite data within model implementation is then suggested.

Coastal ecosystems can be thought of as being established by a number of physico-geochemical drivers, e.g. geochemistry and bathymetry of the basins, climate, tidal and freshwater flows, natural and anthropogenic inputs of nutrients and toxins, all of which exert an influence on the resulting communities of organisms. Depending on the interactions among the major drivers, ecosystems may occur on both large and small scales and be basin-wide or within basins. For individual and separate ecosystems to exist with some permanence in time, e.g. reach a steady-state, they also have to be ‘defended’. Defences are mechanisms that counter changes to maintain the status quo. We argue, and present evidence to support the notion, that the defence mechanisms are inextricably tied to primary production and the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter and provide buffers that mitigate potentially adverse impacts by trace toxins. Tidal channels are crucial for the functioning of wetlands, though their morphological properties, which are relevant for seafloor habitats and flow, have been understudied so far. Here, we release a dataset composed of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) extracted from a total of 2,500 linear kilometres of high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) data collected in 2013 covering the entire network of tidal channels and inlets of the Venice Lagoon, Italy. The dataset comprises also the backscatter (BS) data, which reflect the acoustic properties of the seafloor, and the tidal current fields simulated by means of a high-resolution three-dimensional unstructured hydrodynamic model. The DTMs and the current fields help define how morphological and benthic properties of tidal channels are affected by the action of currents. These data are of potential broad interest not only to geomorphologists, oceanographers and ecologists studying the morphology, hydrodynamics, sediment transport and benthic habitats of tidal environments, but also to coastal engineers and stakeholders for cost-effective monitoring and sustainable management of this peculiar shallow coastal system.

The oceanographic forecast capability in coastal seas is often limited by the capacity of the numerical models in correctly reproducing the complex morphology of the coastline and the exchange processes between the shelf and the open seas. In the marginal Adriatic Sea this task is of uppermost importance due to the presence of several coastal water bodies and rivers. We present here a new operational oceanographic system, called Tiresias, based on the unstructured grid model SHYFEM and representing the whole Adriatic Sea together with the lagoons of Marano-Grado, Venice and Po Delta. The novelty of this oceanographic system resides in the very high-resolution, up to 10 m, of the numerical mesh, and in the high spatial and temporal resolution of the forcing and boundary conditions that drive the forecasts. The forecast results are evaluated against sea temperature and salinity profiles, mean circulation fields derived from a regional ocean model, tide gauges and drifter trajectory. The presented results highlighted the capacity of Tiresias in forecasting the general circulation in the Adriatic Sea, as well as several relevant coastal dynamics, such as saltwater intrusion, storm surge and riverine waters dispersion.
