Search

The evolution of the luminosity function (LF) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) at $z \gtrsim 5$ represents a key constraint to understand their contribution to the ionizing photon budget necessary to trigger the last phase transition in the Universe, i.e. the epoch of Reionization. Recent searches for bright high-z AGNs suggest that the space densities of this population at $z>4$ has to be revised upwards, and sparks new questions about their evolutionary paths. Gas accretion is the key physical mechanism to understand both the distribution of luminous sources and the growth of central Super-Massive Black Holes (SMBHs). In this work, we model the high-z AGN-LF assuming that high-z luminous AGN shine at their Eddington limit: we derive the expected evolution as a function of the ``duty-cycle'' ($f_{\rm dc}$), i.e. the fraction of life-time that a given SMBH spends accreting at the Eddington rate. Our results show that intermediate values ($f_{\rm dc} \simeq 0.1$) predict the best agreement with the ionizing background and photoionization rate, but do not provide enough ionizing photons to account for the observed evolution of the hydrogen neutral fraction. Smaller values ($f_{\rm dc} \lesssim 0.05$) are required for AGNs to be the dominant population responsible for Hydrogen reionization in the Early Universe. We then show that this low-$f_{\rm dc}$ evolution can be reconciled with the current constraints on Helium reionization, although it implies a relatively large number of inactive SMBHs at $z\gtrsim5$, in tension with SMBH growth models based on heavy seeding., 11 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepted

Dissecting the underlying structure of galaxies is of main importance in the framework of galaxy formation and evolution theories. While a classical bulge+disc decomposition of disc galaxies is usually taken as granted, this is only rarely solidly founded upon the full exploitation of the richness of data arising from spectroscopic studies with integral field units. In this work we describe a fully Bayesian estimation method of the global structure of disc galaxies which makes use of the wealth of photometric, kinematic, and mass-to-light ratio data, and that can be seen as a first step towards a machine-learning approach, certainly needed when dealing with larger samples of galaxies. Ours is a novel, hybrid line of action in tackling the problem of galactic parameter estimation, neither purely photometric nor orbit-based. Being rooted on a nested sampler, our code, which is available publicly as an online repository, allows for a statistical assessment of the need for multiple components in the dissecting process. As a first case-study the GPU-optimized code is applied to the S0 galaxy NGC-7683, finding that in this galaxy a pseudo-bulge, possibly the remnant of a bar-like structure, does exist in the center of the system. We present general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of equal-mass spinning black hole binary mergers embedded in a magnetized gas cloud. We focus on the effect of the spin orientation relative to the orbital angular momentum on the flow dynamics, mass accretion rate and Poynting luminosity. We find that, across the inspiral, the gas accreting onto the individual black holes concentrates into disk-like overdensities, whose angular momenta are oriented towards the spin axes and which persist until merger. We identify quasi-periodic modulations occurring in the mass accretion rate at the level of 1-20%, evolving in parallel with the gravitational wave chirp. The similarity between the accretion rate time-series and the gravitational strain is a consequence of the interplay between strong, dynamical gravitational fields and magnetic fields in the vicinity of the inspiralling black holes. This result suggests that quasi-periodicity in the pre-merger accretion rate of massive binaries is not exclusive of environments in which the black holes are embedded in a circumbinary accretion disk, and could provide an additional useful signature of electromagnetic emission concurrent to low-frequency gravitational wave detection., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. In this work we characterize the expected gravitational wave signal detectable by the planned space-borne interferometer LISA and the proposed next generation space-borne interferometer $\mu$Ares arising from a population of primordial black holes orbiting Sgr A*, the super-massive black hole at the Galactic center. Assuming that such objects indeed form the entire diffuse mass allowed by the observed orbit of S2 in the Galactic center, under the simplified assumption of circular orbits and monochromatic mass function, we assess the expected signal in gravitational waves, either from resolved and non-resolved sources. We estimate a small but non negligible chance of $\simeq$ 10% of detecting one single 1 M$_{\odot}$ primordial black hole with LISA in a 10-year-long data stream, while the background signal due to unresolved sources would essentially elude any reasonable chance of detection. On the contrary, $\mu$Ares, with a $\simeq$ 3 orders-of-magnitude better sensitivity at $\simeq$ 10$^{-5}$ Hz, would be able to resolve $\simeq$ 140 solar mass primordial black holes in the same amount of time, while the unresolved background should be observable with an integrated signal-to-noise ratio $\gtrsim$ 100. Allowing the typical PBH mass to be in the range 0.01-10 M$_{\odot}$ would increase LISA chance of detection to $\simeq$ 40% towards the lower limit of the mass spectrum. In the case of $\mu$Ares, instead, we find a "sweet spot" just about 1 M$_{\odot}$, a mass for which the number of resolvable events is indeed maximized., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures; Referee reviewed

Several factors contribute to the emergence and development of life on planets. In addition to local factors (e.g. intrinsic planetary properties and host-star characteristics), planetary habitability can be influenced by the larger scale radiation environment of the Galaxy. Powerful astrophysical transient sources of high energy radiation, like Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Supernovae (SNe), can be life-threatening and potential cause of mass extinctions. A typical GRB at one kiloparsec distance from a planet with an Earth like atmosphere would destroy most of the ozone layer, expose the biota to harmful UVB radiation from the parent star, and trigger global cooling (due to the increase of the NO2 atmospheric concentration). Indeed, the late Ordovician mass extinction event (~440 million years ago) may have been caused by a GRB. GRBs are approximately 106 times more energetic than SNe but their rate is ~10,000 times lower. Both classes of transients share a stellar origin, either from the core collapse of very massive stars or from binaries of compact objects. The rate of both classes is higher in environments characterized by intense star formation. However, long GRBs prefer relatively low metallicity star forming sites. Moderately metal polluted regions seem to be the preferred sites for the formation of Earth-like planets potentially suited to harbour lifeforms. Therefore, the threats posed by GRBs and SNe to the emergence and development of life in the Milky Way depend in a not obvious way on the past 12 billion years of evolution of the star formation rate (Fig. 1), and relative metal pollution of the interstellar medium (Fig. 2). On these grounds, we identify where and when, in the Galaxy, life had the best chances of success against lethal cosmic explosions. We model the lethal effect of GRBs and SNe by scaling their cosmic rates to the MW. GRBs and all SNe rates are proportional to the gas to stars conversion rate within galaxies. In the Galaxy the conversion of gas into stars increased over the past 12 billion years from the center towards the outskirts. Metallicity of newly born stars followed a similar inside-out evolution (Fig. 1 and 2). At different epochs, the number of lethal events as a function of the distance from the center of the Galaxy (Fig. 3) is computed by scaling the cosmic rate to the MW evolving properties (i.e. star formation and metallicity). In the early stages of the MW evolution (from its formation up to 6 billion years ago) the largest portion of the Galaxy out to 10 kpc from the center was unsuitable to life growth due to the high frequency of lethal events (i.e. > 30 every 500 million years). Although the MW outskirts appear as a safer place to live (green contours in Fig.3), the low density (2 ) of terrestrial planets around stars of spectral type FGK and M (dashed and solid blue contours in Fig.1) makes life emergence comparatively unlikely. Starting around 6 Gyrs ago, owing to their energetics, long GRBs became the dominant lethal sources for life within the MW, with an increasing number of lethal events towards the Galaxy periphery (red-to-orange contours in Fig. 3). This is due to the increased conversion rate of relatively low metal polluted gas into massive stars in the outer regions of the MW. Such a global trend determined the formation of an increasingly larger, safer region of the MW centered around 3 kpc (green contours in Fig. 3) where biological complexes could possibly develop on the large population of terrestrial planets present there. The role of GRBs and SNe in the evolution of life within the last 500 Myrs in our Galaxy is shown in Fig. 4. Up to 2.5 kpc from the center the inhabitability of the MW is due to the high rate of short GRBs and SNe. Long GRBs make the outskirts of the Galaxy similarly unsafe, leaving a region between 2.5 and 8 kpc as the best place where biological systems had time to develop. We estimate ~1 long GRBs occurred in the last 0.5 Gyrs within a few kpc from the Sun, an event possibly associated with the late Ordovidcian mass extinction. Search for exoplanets harbouring lifeforms should have more chances of success looking in the direction of the Galactic center, within 5.5 kpc from the Sun, due to the combined effect of high density of terrestrial planets and of low occurrence of lethal transients.

We perform the first suite of fully general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of spinning massive black hole binary mergers. We consider binary black holes with spins of different magnitudes aligned to the orbital angular momentum, which are immersed in a hot, magnetized gas cloud. We investigate the effect of the spin and degree of magnetization (defined through the fluid parameter $\beta^{-1}\equiv p_{\mathrm{mag}}/p_{\mathrm{fluid}}$) on the properties of the accretion flow. We find that magnetized accretion flows are characterized by more turbulent dynamics, as the magnetic field lines are twisted and compressed during the late inspiral. Post-merger, the polar regions around the spin axis of the remnant Kerr black hole are magnetically dominated, and the magnetic field strength is increased by a factor $\sim$10$^2$ (independently from the initial value of $\beta^{-1}$). The magnetized gas in the equatorial plane acquires higher angular momentum, and settles in a thin circular structure around the black hole. We find that mass accretion rates of magnetized configurations are generally smaller than in the unmagnetized cases by up to a factor $\sim$3. Black hole spins have also a suppressing effect on the accretion rate, as large as $\sim$48\%. As a potential driver for electromagnetic emission we follow the evolution of the Poynting luminosity, which increases after merger up to a factor $\sim2$ with increasing spin, regardless of the initial level of magnetization of the fluid. Intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) in the mass range $10^2-10^5\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ bridge the gap between stellar black holes (BHs) and supermassive BHs. Here, we investigate the possibility that IMBHs form in young star clusters via runaway collisions and BH mergers. We analyze $10^4$ simulations of dense young star clusters, featuring up-to-date stellar wind models and prescriptions for core collapse and (pulsational) pair instability. In our simulations, only 9 IMBHs out of 218 form via binary BH mergers, with a mass $\sim{}100-140$ M$_\odot$. This channel is strongly suppressed by the low escape velocity of our star clusters. In contrast, IMBHs with masses up to $\sim{}438$ M$_{\odot}$ efficiently form via runaway stellar collisions, especially at low metallicity. Up to $\sim{}0.2$~% of all the simulated BHs are IMBHs, depending on progenitor's metallicity. The runaway formation channel is strongly suppressed in metal-rich ($Z=0.02$) star clusters, because of stellar winds. IMBHs are extremely efficient in pairing with other BHs: $\sim{}70$% of them are members of a binary BH at the end of the simulations. However, we do not find any IMBH-BH merger. More massive star clusters are more efficient in forming IMBHs: $\sim{}8$% ($\sim{}1$%) of the simulated clusters with initial mass $10^4-3\times{}10^4$ M$_\odot$ ($10^3-5\times{}10^3$ M$_\odot$) host at least one IMBH., Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables. We present a definitive assessment of the role of Inverse Compton scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background photons (IC/CMB) in the context of radio galaxies. Owing to the steep increase of the CMB radiation energy density, IC/CMB is supposed to become progressively more important with respect to radio synchrotron cooling as the redshift increases. For typical energies at play, this process will up-scatter the CMB photons into the X-ray band, and is thus expected to yield a redshift-dependent, concurrent X-ray brightening and radio dimming of the jet-powered structures. Here we show how a conclusive proof of this effect hinges on high-resolution imaging data in which the extended lobes can be distinguished from the compact hot spots where synchrotron-self-Compton dominates the X-ray emission regardless of redshift. The time frame in which hydrogen reionization occurred is highly uncertain, but can be constrained by observations of Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) emission from distant sources. Neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) attenuates Ly$\alpha$~photons emitted by galaxies. As reionization progressed the IGM opacity decreased, increasing Ly$\alpha$~visibility. The galaxy Ly$\alpha$~luminosity function (LF) is thus a useful tool to constrain the timeline of reionization. In this work, we model the Ly$\alpha$~LF as a function of redshift, $z=5-10$, and average IGM neutral hydrogen fraction, $\overline{x}_\textsc{hi}$. We combine the Ly$\alpha$~luminosity probability distribution obtained from inhomogeneous reionization simulations with a model for the UV LF to model the Ly$\alpha$~LF. As the neutral fraction increases, the average number density of Ly$\alpha$~emitting galaxies decreases, and are less luminous, though for $\overline{x}_\textsc{hi} \lesssim 0.4$ there is only a small decrease of the Ly$\alpha$~LF. We use our model to infer the IGM neutral fraction at $z=6.6, 7.0, 7.3$ from observed Ly$\alpha$~LFs. We conclude that there is a significant increase in the neutral fraction with increasing redshift: $\overline{x}_\textsc{hi}(z=6.6)=0.08^{+ 0.08}_{- 0.05}, \, \overline{x}_\textsc{hi}(z=7.0)=0.28 \pm 0.05$ and $\overline{x}_\textsc{hi}(z=7.3)=0.83^{+ 0.06}_{- 0.07}$. We predict trends in the Ly$\alpha$~luminosity density and Schechter parameters as a function of redshift and the neutral fraction. We find that the Ly$\alpha$~luminosity density decreases as the universe becomes more neutral. Furthermore, as the neutral fraction increases, the faint-end slope of the Ly$\alpha$~LF steepens, and the characteristic Ly$\alpha$~luminosity shifts to lower values, concluding that the evolving shape of the Ly$\alpha$~LF -- not just its integral -- is an important tool to study reionization., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, submitted to ApJ

Third Generation ground based Gravitational Wave Interferometers, like the Einstein Telescope (ET), Cosmic Explorer (CE), and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detectcoalescing binary black holes over a wide mass spectrum and across all cosmic epochs. We track the cosmological growth of the earliest light and heavy seeds that swiftly transit into the supermassive domain using a semi analytical model for the formation of quasars at $z=6.4$, 2 and $0.2$, in which we follow black hole coalescences driven by triple interactions. We find that light seed binaries of several $10^2$ M$_\odot$ are accessible to ET with a signal-to-noise ratio ($S/N$) of $10-20$ at $620$). Mergers involving heavy seeds ($\sim 10^5 M_\odot - 10^6 M_\odot$) would be within reach up to $z=20$ in the LISA frequency domain. We present a new constraint on the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction at z~1.3. We obtain deep, high sensitivity far-UV imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Solar Blind Channel (SBC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), targeting 11 star-forming galaxies at 1.2 190 \AA, low stellar mass (M* < 10^10 M_sun) and U-band magnitude of U3) in the individual galaxies or in the stack in the far-UV images. We study the dynamical evolution of eccentric massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) interacting with unbound stars by means of an extensive set of three body scattering experiments. Compared to previous studies, we extend the investigation down to a MBHB mass ratio of $q=m_2/m_1=10^{-4}$, where $m_1$ and $m_2$ are the masses of the primary and secondary hole respectively. Contrary to a simple extrapolation from higher mass ratios, we find that for $q\lesssim 10^{-3}$ the eccentricity growth rate becomes negative, i.e., the binary {\it circularises} as it shrinks. This behaviour is due to the subset of interacting stars captured in metastable counter-rotating orbits; those stars tend to extract angular momentum from the binary, promoting eccentricity growth for $q>10^{-3}$, but tend to inject angular momentum into the binary driving it towards circularisation for $q, 6 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on deep Chandra X-ray Telescope imaging observations of 4C 63.20, one of the few known radio galaxies at z>3.5. The X-ray counterpart is resolved into a core plus two off-nuclear sources that (combined) account for close to 30% of the total X-ray flux. Their morphology and orientation are consistent with a diffuse, lobe-like nature, albeit compact hotspots cannot be ruled out. The broadband spectral energy distribution of 4C 63.20 can be reproduced with a jet model where the majority of the radio flux can be ascribed to synchrotron emission from the hotspots, whereas the (non-nuclear) X-ray emission is produced via Inverse Compton (IC) off of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons within the extended lobes. This scenario is broadly consistent with the expectation from highly magnetized lobes in a hotter CMB, and supports the view that IC/CMB may quench less extreme radio lobes at high redshifts., 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Counted among the most powerful cosmic events, supernovae (SNe) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be highly disruptive for life: Their radiation can be harmful for biota or induce extinction by removing most of the protective atmospheric ozone layer from terrestrial planets (TPs). Nearby high-energy transient astrophysical events have been proposed as possible triggers of mass extinctions on Earth. We assess the habitability of the Milky Way (MW) throughout its cosmic history against potentially disruptive astrophysical transients with the aim of identifying the safest places and epochs within our Galaxy. We also test the hypothesis that one long GRB played a leading role in the late Ordovician mass-extinction event (~445 Myr ago). We characterised the habitability of the MW throughout its cosmic history as a function of galactocentric distance of TPs. We estimated the dangerous effects of transient astrophysical events (long and short GRBs and SNe) with a model that connects their rate to the specific star formation and metallicity evolution within the Galaxy throughout its cosmic history. Our model also accounts for the probability that TPs form around FGK and M stars. Until about six billion years ago, the outskirts of the Galaxy were the safest places to live, despite the relatively low density of TPs. In the last about four billion years, regions between 2 and 8 kpc from the center, which had a higher density of TPs, became the best places for a relatively safer biotic life growth. We confirm the hypothesis that one long GRB played a leading role in the late Ordovician mass-extinction event. In the last 500 Myr, the safest neighborhood in the Galaxy was a region at a distance of 2 to 8 kpc from the Galactic center, whereas the MW outskirts were sterilized by two to five long GRBs., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. It has been proposed that close interactions with satellite galaxies can significantly perturb the morphology of the main galaxy. However, the dynamics of an already formed bar following the interaction with the external environment has not been studied in detail in a fully cosmological context. In this work, analysing the cosmological zoom-in simulation Eris2k, we study the effects that a very unequal-mass flyby crossing the stellar disc has on the stability of the pre-existing bar. We characterize the evolution of the bar strength and length showing that the perturbation exerted by the flyby shuffles the orbits of stars for less than one Gyr. After this time, the bar shows a remarkable resilience, reforming with properties comparable to those it had before the interaction. Our work shows that close unequal-mass encounters, the most frequent interactions occurring during the evolution of cosmic structures, have (i) an overall minor impact on the global evolution of the bar in the long term, still (ii) the effect is destructive and (iii) a very weak interaction is sufficient to dismantle a strong bar leading to its "apparent death". As a consequence, due to the non-negligible duration of the bar-less period, a fraction of observed spiral galaxies classified as non-barred could be prone to bar formation., 6 pages, 3 Figure; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Intense X-ray and ultraviolet stellar irradiation can heat and inflate the atmospheres of closely orbiting exoplanets, driving mass outflows that may be significant enough to evaporate a sizable fraction of the planet atmosphere over the system lifetime. The recent surge in the number of known exoplanets, together with the imminent deployment of new ground and space-based facilities for exoplanet discovery and characterization, requires a prompt and efficient assessment of the most promising targets for intensive spectroscopic follow-ups. To this purpose, we developed ATES (ATmospheric EScape); a new hydrodynamics code that is specifically designed to compute the temperature, density, velocity and ionization fraction profiles of highly irradiated planetary atmospheres, along with the current, steady-state mass loss rate. ATES solves the one-dimensional Euler, mass and energy conservation equations in radial coordinates through a finite-volume scheme. The hydrodynamics module is paired with a photoionization equilibrium solver that includes cooling via bremsstrahlung, recombination and collisional excitation/ionization for the case of a primordial atmosphere entirely composed of atomic hydrogen and helium, whilst also accounting for advection of the different ion species. Compared against the results of 14 moderately-to-highly irradiated planets simulated with The PLUTO-CLOUDY Interface (TPCI), ATES yields remarkably good agreement at a significantly smaller fraction of the computational time. A convergence study shows that ATES recovers stable, steady-state hydrodynamic solutions for systems with $\log(-\phi_p) \lesssim 12.9 + 0.17\log F_{\rm XUV}$. Incidentally, atmospheres of systems above this threshold are generally thought to be undergoing Jeans escape. We report the detection of extended Hα emission from the tip of the HI disc of the nearby edge-on galaxy UGC 7321, observed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at the Very Large Telescope. The Hα surface brightness fades rapidly where the HI column density drops below NHI∼10(19) cm(−2), consistent with fluorescence arising at the ionization front from gas that is photoionized by the extragalactic ultraviolet background (UVB). The surface brightness measured at this location is (1.2 ± 0.5) × 10(−19) erg s(−1) cm(−2) arcsec(−2), where the error is mostly systematic and results from the proximity of the signal to the edge of the MUSE field of view, and from the presence of a sky line next to the redshifted Hα wavelength. By combining the Hα and the HI 21 cm maps with a radiative transfer calculation of an exponential disc illuminated by the UVB, we derive a value for the HI photoionization rate of ΓHI∼(6--8)×10(−14) s(−1). Pair instability (PI) and pulsational PI prevent the formation of black holes (BHs) with mass $\gtrsim{}60$ M$_\odot$ from single star evolution. Here, we investigate the possibility that BHs with mass in the PI gap form via stellar mergers and multiple stellar mergers, facilitated by dynamical encounters in young star clusters. We analyze $10^4$ simulations, run with the direct N-body code nbody6++gpu coupled with the population synthesis code MOBSE. We find that up to $\sim{}6$~% of all simulated BHs have mass in the PI gap, depending on progenitor's metallicity. This formation channel is strongly suppressed in metal-rich (Z = 0.02) star clusters, because of stellar winds. BHs with mass in the PI gap are initially single BHs but can efficiently acquire companions through dynamical exchanges. We find that $\sim{}$21%, 10% and 0.5% of all binary BHs have at least one component in the PI mass gap at metallicity Z = 0.0002, 0.002 and 0.02, respectively. Based on the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate and metallicity, and under the assumption that all stars form in young star clusters, we predict that $\sim{}5$~% of all binary BH mergers detectable by advanced LIGO and Virgo at their design sensitivity have at least one component in the PI mass gap., 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, MNRAS, in press

Bars are a key factor in the long-term evolution of spiral galaxies, in their unique role in redistributing angular momentum and transporting gas and stars on large scales. The Eris-suite simulations are cosmological zoom-in, N-body, smoothed-particle hydrodynamic simulations built to follow the formation and evolution of a Milky Way-sized galaxy across the build-up of the large scale structure. Here we analyse and describe the outcome of two particular simulations taken from the Eris suite - ErisBH and Eris2k - which mainly differ in the prescriptions employed for gas cooling, star formation, and feedback from supernovae and black holes. Our study shows that the enhanced effective feedback in Eris2k, due to the collective effect of the different micro-physics implementations, results in a galaxy which is less massive than its ErisBH counterpart till z~1. However, when the stellar content is large enough so that global dynamical instabilities can be triggered, the galaxy in Eris2k develops a stronger and more extended bar with respect to ErisBH. We demonstrate that he structural properties and time evolution of the two bars are very different. We present first results from Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations at the Very Large Telescope in the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF), a $\approx 1.2\times 1.4$ arcmin$^2$ region for which we are collecting $\approx$200 hours of integral field spectroscopy. The $\approx 40$-hour observation completed to date reveals the presence of a group of three Ly$\alpha$ nebulae associated with a bright quasar pair at $z\simeq3.23$ with projected separation of $\approx 500\rm~kpc$. Two of the nebulae are physically associated with the quasars which are likely powering the Ly$\alpha$ emission, and extend for $\gtrsim 100~\rm kpc$ at a surface brightness level of $\approx 6\times 10^{-19}~\rm erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}~arcsec^{-2}$. A third smaller ($\approx$35 kpc) nebula lies at a velocity offset of $\approx 1550$ km s$^{-1}$. Despite their clustered nature, the two large nebulae have properties similar to those observed in isolated quasars and exhibit no sharp decline in flux at the current depth, suggesting an even more extended distribution of gas around the quasars. We present the goals, design, and first results of the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF) survey, a large programme using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at the ESO Very Large Telescope. The MUDF survey is collecting ~ 150 hours on-source of integral field optical spectroscopy in a 1.5 x 1.2 square arcmin region which hosts several astrophysical structures along the line of sight, including two bright z ~ 3.2 quasars with close separation (~ 500 kpc). Following the description of the data reduction procedures, we present the analysis of the galaxy environment and gaseous properties of seven groups detected at redshifts 0.5 < z < 1.5, spanning a large dynamic range in halo mass, log(Mh/Msun) ~ 11 - 13.5. For four of the groups, we find associated MgII absorbers tracing cool gas in high-resolution spectroscopy of the two quasars, including one case of correlated absorption in both sightlines at distance ~ 480 kpc. The absorption strength associated with the groups is higher than what has been reported for more isolated galaxies of comparable mass and impact parameters. We do not find evidence for widespread cool gas giving rise to strong absorption within these groups. Combining these results with the distribution of neutral and ionised gas seen in emission in lower-redshift groups, we conclude that gravitational interactions in the group environment strip gas from the galaxy haloes into the intragroup medium, boosting the cross section of cool gas and leading to the high fraction of strong MgII absorbers that we detect., 20 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Coalescing massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) of $10^{4-7} \rm M_{\odot}$, forming in the aftermath of galaxy mergers, are primary targets of the space mission LISA, the {\it Laser Interferometer Space Antenna}. An assessment of LISA detection prospects requires an estimate of the abundance and properties of MBHBs that form and evolve during the assembly of cosmic structures. To this aim, we employ a semi-analytic model to follow the co-evolution of MBHBs within their host galaxies. We identify three major evolutionary channels driving the binaries to coalescence: two standard paths along which the binary evolution is driven by interactions with the stellar and/or gaseous environment, and a novel channel where MBHB coalescence occurs during the interaction with a third black hole. For each channel, we follow the orbital evolution of MBHBs with physically motivated models that include a self-consistent treatment of the orbital eccentricity. We find that LISA will detect between $\approx 25$ and $\approx 75$ events per year depending on the seed model. We show that triple-induced coalescences can range from a few detected events up to $\sim 30\%$ of the total detected mergers. Moreover, even if the standard gas/stars-driven evolutionary channels should fail and MBHBs were to stall, triple interactions would still occur as a result of the hierarchical nature of galaxy formation, resulting in about $\approx 10$ to $\approx 20$ LISA detections per year. Remarkably, triple interactions among the black holes can produce coalescing binaries with large eccentricities ($\gtrsim 0.9$) upon entrance into the LISA band. Searching for distinctive signatures, which characterize different formation channels of binary black holes (BBHs), is a crucial step towards the interpretation of current and future gravitational wave detections. Here, we investigate the demography of merging BBHs in young star clusters (SCs), which are the nursery of massive stars. We performed $4\times{} 10^3$ N-body simulations of SCs with metallicity $Z=0.002$, initial binary fraction $0.4$ and fractal initial conditions, to mimic the clumpiness of star forming regions. Our simulations include a novel population-synthesis approach based on the code MOBSE. We find that SC dynamics does not affect the merger rate significantly, but leaves a strong fingerprint on the properties of merging BBHs. More than 50 % of merging BBHs in young SCs form by dynamical exchanges in the first few Myr. Dynamically formed merging BBHs are significantly heavier than merging BBHs in isolated binaries: merging BBHs with total mass up to $\sim{}120$ M$_\odot$ form in young SCs, while the maximum total mass of merging BBHs in isolated binaries with the same metallicity is only $\sim{}70$ M$_\odot$. Merging BBHs born via dynamical exchanges tend to have smaller mass ratios than BBHs in isolated binaries. Furthermore, SC dynamics speeds up the merger: the delay time between star formation and coalescence is significantly shorter in young SCs. In our simulations, massive systems such as GW170729 form only via dynamical exchanges. Finally $\sim{}2$ % of merging BBHs in young SCs have mass in the pair-instability mass gap ($\sim{}60-120$ M$_\odot$). Recent observations suggest that hydrogen reionization ends late ($z \simeq 6$) and proceeds quickly. We present here a new model of the meta-galactic UV/X-ray background (UVB) that is consistent with this. It adopts the most recent determinations of the ionizing emissivity due to stars and AGN, as well as of the HI absorber column density distribution. Another major improvement is a new treatment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) opacity for ionizing photons that is able to consistently capture the transition from a neutral to an ionized IGM. Previous synthesis models of the UVB, when used in simulations, yield reionization and thermal histories that are inconsistent with the assumed ionizing emissivities. With our new treatment, this discrepancy is fully resolved. In our fiducial model, galaxies leaking $\lesssim 18\%$ of their Lyman continuum emission drive HI reionization, while AGN drive HeII reionization (completing at $z \simeq 6.2$ and $2.8$ respectively). Due to the limited time available for cooling between HI and HeII reionization, higher IGM temperatures are predicted for late reionization scenarios. In our fiducial model, the predicted temperatures agree well with observational constraints at $z \lesssim 4$, while being slightly high compared to (somewhat uncertain) data above that. Models with a larger contribution of AGN are instead disfavoured by the temperature data, as well as by measurements of the HI and HeII Lyman-$\alpha$ forest opacities. Inspiraling massive black-hole binaries (MBHBs) forming in the aftermath of galaxy mergers are expected to be the loudest gravitational-wave (GW) sources relevant for pulsar-timing arrays (PTAs) at nHz frequencies. The incoherent overlap of signals from a cosmic population of MBHBs gives rise to a stochastic GW background (GWB) with characteristic strain around $h_c\sim10^{-15}$ at a reference frequency of 1 yr$^{-1}$, although uncertainties around this value are large. Current PTAs are piercing into the GW amplitude range predicted by MBHB-population models, but no detection has been reported so far. To assess the future success prospects of PTA experiments, it is therefore important to estimate the minimum GWB level consistent with our current understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies and massive black holes (MBHs). To this purpose, we couple a semianalytic model of galaxy evolution and an extensive study of the statistical outcome of triple MBH interactions. We show that even in the most pessimistic scenario where all MBHBs stall before entering the GW-dominated regime, triple interactions resulting from subsequent galaxy mergers inevitably drive a considerable fraction of the MBHB population to coalescence. At frequencies relevant for PTA, the resulting GWB is only a factor of 2-to-3 suppressed compared to a fiducial model where binaries are allowed to merge over Gyr timescales. Coupled with current estimates of the expected GWB amplitude range, our findings suggest that the minimum GWB from cosmic MBHBs is unlikely to be lower than $h_c\sim 10^{-16}$ (at $f = 1$ yr$^{-1}$), well within the expected sensitivity of projected PTAs based on future observations with FAST, MeerKAT and SKA., 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In a recent paper we reported on the detection of a diffuse H α glow in the outskirts of the nearby, edge-on disc galaxy UGC 7321 observed with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the ESO Very Large Telescope. By interpreting the H α emission as fluorescence arising from hydrogen ionized by an external (i.e. extragalactic) radiation field, we estimated the UV background (UVB) intensity in terms of H I ionization rate (per ion) at z ≃ 0 to be in the range ΓH I ∼ 6 − 8 × 10−14 s−1. In the present work, by performing radiative transfer calculations over a large set of models of the gaseous disc of UGC 7321, we refine our estimate and through an MCMC analysis derive a value for the photoionization rate of ΓH i = 7.27+−229390 × 10−14 s−1. In particular, our analysis demonstrates that this value is robust against large variations in the galaxy model and that the uncertainties are mainly driven by the errors associated with the observed H α surface brightness. Our measurement is consistent with several recent determinations of the same quantity by a completely independent technique (i.e. flux decrement analysis of the Lyα forest), and support the notion that the low-redshift UVB is largely dominated by active galactic nuclei, possibly with no need of further contribution from star-forming galaxies

Massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) are expected to form at the centre of merging galaxies during the hierarchical assembly of the cosmic structure, and are expected to be the loudest sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the low frequency domain. However, because of the dearth of energy exchanges with background stars and gas, many of these MBHBs may stall at separations too large for GW emission to drive them to coalescence in less than a Hubble time. Triple MBH systems are then bound to form after a further galaxy merger, triggering a complex and rich dynamics that can eventually lead to MBH coalescence. Here we report on the results of a large set of numerical simulations, where MBH triplets are set in spherical stellar potentials and MBH dynamics is followed through 2.5 post-Newtonian order in the equations of motion. From our full suite of simulated systems we find that a fraction $\simeq 20-30$% of the MBH binaries that would otherwise stall are led to coalesce within a Hubble time. The corresponding coalescence timescale peaks around 300 Myr, while the eccentricity close to the plunge, albeit small, is non-negligible ($\lesssim 0.1$). We construct and discuss marginalised probability distributions of the main parameters involved and, in a companion paper of the series, we will use the results presented here to forecast the contribution of MBH triplets to the GW signal in the nHz regime probed by Pulsar Timing Array experiments., 19 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Stellar bars are a common feature in massive disc galaxies. On a theoretical ground, the response of gas to a bar is generally thought to cause nuclear starbursts and, possibly, AGN activity once the perturbed gas reaches the central super-massive black hole. By means of high resolution numerical simulations we detail the purely dynamical effects that a forming bar exerts on the gas of an isolated disc galaxy. The galaxy is initially unstable to the formation of non-axisymmetric structures, and within 1 Gyr it develops spiral arms that eventually evolve into a central stellar bar on kpc scale. A first major episode of gas inflow occurs during the formation of the spiral arms while at later times, when the stellar bar is establishing, a low density region is carved between the bar co-rotational and inner Lindblad resonance radii. The development of such "dead zone" inhibits further massive gas inflows. Indeed, the gas inflow reaches its maximum during the relatively fast bar formation phase and not, as often assumed, when the bar is fully formed. We conclude that the low efficiency of long-lived, evolved bars in driving gas toward galactic nuclei is the reason why observational studies have failed to establish an indisputable link between bars and AGNs. On the other hand, the high efficiency in driving strong gas inflows of the intrinsically transient process of bar formation suggests that the importance of bars as drivers of AGN activity in disc galaxies has been overlooked so far. In an effort to understand the cause of the apparent depletion in the number density of radio-loud AGNs at $z>3$, this work investigates the viability of the so-called Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) quenching mechanism of intrinsically jetted, high-z AGNs, whereby Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off electrons within the extended lobes results in a substantial dimming of the lobe synchrotron emission at GHz frequencies, while simultaneously boosting their diffuse X-ray signal. We focus on five $z>3.5$ radio galaxies that have sufficiently deep Chandra exposure (> 50 ks) to warrant a meaningful investigation of any extended X-ray emission. For those objects with evidence for statistically significant extended X-ray lobes (4C 41.17 and 4C 03.24), we combine the Chandra measurements with literature data at lower frequencies to assemble the systems' Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs), and utilize state-of-the-art SED modelling (Ghisellini et al. 2015) -- including emission from the disk, torus, jet, hotspots, and lobes -- to infer their physical parameters. For both radio galaxies, the magnetic energy density in the hotspots is found to exceed the energy density in CMB photons, wheres the opposite is true for the lobes. This implies that any extended synchrotron emission likely originates from the hotspots themselves, rather than the lobes. Conversely, Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons dominates the extended X-ray emission from the lobes, which are effectively "radio-quenched". As a result, CMB quenching is effective in these systems in spite of the fact that the observed X-ray to radio luminosity ratio does not bear the signature $(1+z)^4$ dependence of the CMB energy density., MNRAS in press; 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We highlight some subtleties that affect naive implementations of quadrupolar and octupolar gravitational waveforms from numerically-integrated trajectories of three-body systems. Some of those subtleties arise from the requirement that the source be contained in its "coordinate near zone" when applying the standard PN formulae for gravitational-wave emission, and from the need to use the non-linear Einstein equations to correctly derive the quadrupole emission formula. We show that some of these subtleties were occasionally overlooked in the literature, with consequences for published results. We also provide prescriptions that lead to correct and robust predictions for the waveforms computed from numerically-integrated orbits., 20 pages, 6 figures

Recent work suggests that strong emission line, star-forming galaxies may be significant Lyman Continuum leakers. We combine archival HST broadband ultraviolet and optical imaging (F275W and F606W, respectively) with emission line catalogs derived from WFC3 IR G141 grism spectroscopy to search for escaping Lyman Continuum (LyC) emission from homogeneously selected $z\simeq$2.5 SFGs. We detect no escaping Lyman Continuum from SFGs selected on [OII] nebular emission (N=208) and, within a narrow redshift range, on [OIII]/[OII]. We measure 1$\sigma$ upper limits to the LyC escape fraction relative to the non-ionizing UV continuum from [OII] emitters, $f_{esc}$5 ELGs, $f_{esc}$6, such galaxies may be insufficient for reionization. Deeper survey data in the rest-frame ionizing UV will be necessary to determine whether strong line ratios could be useful for pre-selecting LyC leakers at high redshift., Comment: accepted to ApJ Letters

We present results from the "Ponos" simulation suite on the early evolution of a massive, $M_{\rm vir}(z=0)=1.2\times 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$ galaxy. At $z\gtrsim6$, before feedback from a central supermassive black hole becomes dominant, the main galaxy has a stellar mass $\sim 2\times 10^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ and a star formation rate $\sim 20$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The galaxy sits near the expected main sequence of star-forming galaxies at those redshifts, and resembles moderately star-forming systems observed at $z>5$. The high specific star formation rate results in vigorous heating and stirring of the gas by supernovae feedback, and the galaxy develops a thick and turbulent disc, with gas velocity dispersion $\sim 40$ km s$^{-1}$, rotation to dispersion ratio $\sim 2$, and with a significant amount of gas at $\sim 10^5$ K. The Toomre parameter always exceeds the critical value for gravito-turbulence, $Q\sim 1.5-2$, mainly due to the contribution of warm/hot gas inside the disc. Without feedback, a nearly gravito-turbulent regime establishes with similar gas velocity dispersion and lower $Q$. We propose that the "hot and turbulent" disc regime seen in our simulations, unlike the "cold and turbulent" gravito-turbulent regime of massive clumpy disc galaxies at $z\sim 1-2$, is a fundamental characterisation of main sequence galaxies at $z\gtrsim 6$, as they can sustain star formation rates comparable to those of low-mass starbursts at $z=0$. This results in no sustained coherent gas inflows through the disc, and in fluctuating and anisotropic mass transport, possibly postponing the assembly of the bulge and causing the initial feeding of the central black hole to be highly intermittent., 22 pages, 18 figures, 1 table, MNRAS accepted, mistakes in figures corrected, results unchanged

In the last few years many exoplanets in the habitable zone (HZ) of M-dwarfs have been discovered, but the X-ray/UV activity of cool stars is very different from that of our Sun. The high-energy radiation environment influences the habitability, plays a crucial role for abiogenesis, and impacts planetary atmospheres. LHS 1140b is a super-Earth-size planet orbiting in the HZ of LHS 1140, an M4.5 dwarf at ~15 parsecs. We present the results of a Swift X-ray/UV observing campaign. We characterize for the first time the X-ray/UV radiation environment of LHS 1140b. We measure the variability of the near ultraviolet (NUV) flux and estimate the far ultraviolet (FUV) flux with a correlation between FUV and NUV flux of a sample of low-mass stars in the GALEX archive. We highlight the presence of a dominating X-ray source close to the J2000 coordinates of LHS 1140, characterize its spectrum, and derive an X-ray flux upper limit for LHS 1140. We find that this contaminant source could have influenced the previously estimated spectral energy distribution. No significant variation of the NUV flux of LHS 1140 is found over 3 months, and we do not observe any flare during the 38 ks on the target. LHS 1140 is in the 25th percentile of least variable M4-M5 dwarfs of the GALEX sample. Analyzing the UV flux experienced by the HZ planet LHS 1140b, we find that outside the atmosphere it receives a NUV flux, 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. To date, no direct detection of Lyman continuum emission has been measured for intermediate-redshift (z ~ 1) star-forming galaxies. We combine Hubble Space Telescope grism spectroscopy with GALEX UV and ground-based optical imaging to extend the search for escaping Lyman continuum to a large (~600) sample of z ~ 1 low-mass log(M)≃ 9.3 M_☉), moderately star-forming (ψ ≾ 10M_☉ yr^(−1)) galaxies selected initially on Hα emission. The characteristic escape fraction of LyC from star-forming galaxies (SFGs) that populate this parameter space remains weakly constrained by previous surveys, but these faint (sub-Lsstarf) SFGs are assumed to play a significant role in the reionization of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshift z > 6. We do not make an unambiguous detection of escaping LyC radiation from this z ~ 1 sample, individual non-detections to constrain the absolute Lyman continuum escape fraction, f_(esc) < 2.1% (3σ). We measure an upper limit of f_(esc) < 9.6% from a sample of SFGs selected on high Hα equivalent width EW > 200Å), which are thought to be close analogs of high redshift sources of reionization. For reference, we also present an emissivity-weighted escape fraction that is useful for measuring the general contribution SFGs to the ionizing UV background. In the discussion, we consider the implications of these intermediate redshift constraints for the reionization of hydrogen in the IGM at high (z > 6) redshift. If we assume our z ~ 1 SFGs, for which we measure this emissivity-weighted f_(esc), are analogs to the high redshift sources of reionization, we find it is difficult to reconcile reionization by faint (M}_(UV) ≾-13) SFGs with a low escape fraction (f_(esc) < 3%), with constraints from independent high redshift observations. If f_(esc) evolves with redshift, reionization by SFGs may be consistent with observations from Planck.

Massive black-hole binaries (MBHBs) are thought to be the main source of gravitational waves (GWs) in the low-frequency domain surveyed by ongoing and forthcoming Pulsar Timing Array campaigns and future space-borne missions, such as {\it eLISA}. However, many low-redshift MBHBs in realistic astrophysical environments may not reach separations small enough to allow significant GW emission, but rather stall on (sub)pc-scale orbits. This "last-parsec problem" can be eased by the appearance of a third massive black hole (MBH) -- the "intruder" -- whose action can force, under certain conditions, the inner MBHB on a very eccentric orbit, hence allowing intense GW emission eventually leading to coalescence. A detailed assessment of the process, ultimately driven by the induced Kozai-Lidov oscillations of the MBHB orbit, requires a general relativistic treatment and the inclusion of external factors, such as the Newtonian precession of the intruder orbit in the galactic potential and its hardening by scattering off background stars. In order to tackle this problem, we developed a three-body Post-Newtonian (PN) code framed in a realistic galactic potential, including both non-dissipative 1PN and 2PN terms, and dissipative terms such as 2.5PN effects, orbital hardening of the outer binary, and the effect of the dynamical friction on the early stages of the intruder dynamics. With detections of quasars powered by increasingly massive black holes (BHs) at increasingly early times in cosmic history over the past decade, there has been correspondingly rapid progress made on the theory of early BH formation and growth. Here we review the emerging picture of how the first massive BHs formed from the primordial gas and then grew to supermassive scales. We discuss the initial conditions for the formation of the progenitors of these seed BHs, the factors dictating the initial masses with which they form, and their initial stages of growth via accretion, which may occur at super-Eddington rates. Finally, we briefly discuss how these results connect to large-scale simulations of the growth of supermassive BHs over the course of the first billion years following the Big Bang., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, invited review accepted for publication in PASA

The rapid assembly of the massive black holes that power the luminous quasars observed at $z \sim 6-7$ remains a puzzle. Various direct collapse models have been proposed to head-start black hole growth from initial seeds with masses $\sim 10^5\,\rm M_\odot$, which can then reach a billion solar mass while accreting at the Eddington limit. Here we propose an alternative scenario based on radiatively inefficient super-critical accretion of stellar-mass holes embedded in the gaseous circum-nuclear discs (CNDs) expected to exist in the cores of high redshift galaxies. Our sub-pc resolution hydrodynamical simulations show that stellar-mass holes orbiting within the central 100 pc of the CND bind to very high density gas clumps that arise from the fragmentation of the surrounding gas. Owing to the large reservoir of dense cold gas available, a stellar-mass black hole allowed to grow at super-Eddington rates according to the "slim disc" solution can increase its mass by 3 orders of magnitudes within a few million years. These findings are supported by simulations run with two different hydro codes, RAMSES based on the Adaptive Mesh Refinement technique and GIZMO based on a new Lagrangian Godunov-type method, and with similar, but not identical, sub-grid recipes for star formation, supernova feedback, black hole accretion and feedback. We investigate the spectral properties of an active black hole, member of a massive (10 7 – 10 9 M� ) sub-parsec black hole binary. We work under the hypothesis that the binary, surrounded by a circumbinary disc, has cleared a gap, and that accretion occurs on to the secondary black hole fed by material closer to the inner edge of the disc. Broad line emission clouds orbit around the active black hole and suffer erosion due to tidal truncation at the Roche Lobe surface, following gap opening and orbital decay. We consider three of the most prominent broad emission lines observed in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), i.e. C IV ,M gII and Hβ, and compute the flux ratios between the lines of Mg II and C IV (FMg II/FC IV) and those of Mg II and Hβ (FMg II/FHβ). We find that close black hole binaries have FMg II/FC IV up to 1 order of magnitude smaller than single black holes. By contrast FMg II/FHβ may be significantly reduced only at the shortest separations. Peculiarly low values of line flux ratios together with large velocity offsets between the broad and narrow emission lines and/or periodic variability in the continuum (on time-scales years) would identify genuine sub-pc binary candidates.
