We show flat-optics photon harvesting in large-area polymeric/MoS2 nanogrooved templates. The strong optical confinement into the ultra-thin MoS2 boosts the photobleaching of polluting dyes, paving the way for realistic photoconversion applications.

Fostered by the recent advancements in photonic technologies, the need for all-optical dynamic control on complex photonic elements is emerging as more and more relevant, especially in integrated photonics and metasurface-based flat-optics. In this framework, optically-induced anisotropy has been proposed as powerful mean enabling tuning functionalities in several planar architectures. Here, we design and fabricate an anisotropic two-dimensional bull’s eye cavity inscribed within an optically-active polymeric film spun on a one-dimensional photonic crystal sustaining Bloch surface waves (BSW). Thanks to the cavity morphology, two surface resonant modes with substantially orthogonal polarizations can be coupled within the cavity from free-space illumination. We demonstrate that a dynamic control on the resonant mode energies can be easily operated by modulating the orientation of the optically-induced birefringence on the surface, via a polarized external laser beam. Overall, reversible blue- and red-shifts of the resonant BSWs are observed within a spectral range of about 2 nm, with a moderate laser power illumination. The polymeric structure is constituted by a novel blend of an azopolymer and a thermally-sensitive resist, which allows a precise patterning via thermal scanning probe lithography, while providing a significant structural integrity against photo-fluidization or mass-flow effects commonly occurring in irradiated azopolymers. The proposed approach based on tailored birefringence opens up new pathways to finely control the optical coupling of localized surface modes to/from free-space radiation, particularly in hybrid organic–inorganic devices.

Thin-film organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices represent an attractive alternative to conventional silicon solar cells due to their lightweight, flexibility, and low cost. However, the relatively low optical absorption of the OPV active layers still represents an open issue in view of efficient devices that cannot be addressed by adopting conventional light coupling strategies derived from thick PV absorbers. The light coupling to thin-film solar cells can be boosted by nanostructuring the device interfaces at the subwavelength scale. Here, we demonstrate broadband and omnidirectional photon harvesting in thin-film OPV devices enabled by highly ordered one-dimensional (1D) arrays of nanogrooves. Laser interference lithography, in combination with reactive ion etching (RIE), provides the controlled tailoring of the height and periodicity of the silica grooves, enabling effective tuning of the anti-reflection properties in the active organic layer (PTB7:PCBM). With this strategy, we demonstrate a strong enhancement of the optical absorption, as high as 19% with respect to a flat device, over a broadband visible and near-infrared spectrum. The OPV device supported on these optimized nanogrooved substrates yields a 14% increase in short-circuit current over the corresponding flat device, highlighting the potential of this large-scale light-harvesting strategy in the broader context of thin-film technologies.

Transition-edge sensors (TES) are superconducting devices used for detecting particles and electromagnetic radiation, ranging from γ-ray to mm wavelengths. A fundamental parameter for operations of TES detectors for the desired application is the superconducting critical temperature TC . We are developing TES based bolometers made of metallic Ti films, with an operating temperature of 500 mK, to be used for cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements. We have observed that electron-beam evaporation grown Ti films can reach critical temperatures higher than 500 mK when the substrate temperature is kept below some temperature threshold. Discordant critical temperatures of Titanium TES are found in literature and very little information is available about the various TC and relative fabrication process. Critical temperature of Ti films is generally known to be affected by deposition methods, substrates, processing conditions and heating. In the past we tried to tune the critical temperature of titanium thin films by means of post-annealing and we found a regular decrease of TC from 540 mK to 360 mK, in this work we confirm this effect. Further, we have found that titanium film grows with a most stable hcp structure. The annealing process until 260 °C, does not modify the morphological features of the film. We find also evidences of a shift in XRD peaks that indicate structural changes of the lattice parameters, which could play a role in the TC modification.

Self-organized wrinkled templates are homogeneously fabricated over a large area (cm(2)) glass substrates by defocused ion beam irradiation, demonstrating the capability to induce and modify at will the out-of-plane tilt of the nanofacets with selected slope. We identify a region of morphological instability which leads to faceting for incidence angles of the ion beam with respect to the surface, theta, in the range 15 degrees

Multifunctional flexible Au electrodes based on one-dimensional (1D) arrays of plasmonic gratings are nanofabricated over large areas with an engineered variant of laser interference lithography optimized for low-cost transparent templates. Au nanostripe (NS) arrays achieve sheet resistance in the order of 20 Ohm/square on large areas (∼ cm2) and are characterized by a strong and dichroic plasmonic response which can be easily tuned across the visible (VIS) to near-infrared (NIR) spectral range by tailoring their cross-sectional morphology. Stacking vertically a second nanostripe, separated by a nanometer scale dielectric gap, we form near-field coupled Au/SiO2/Au dimers which feature hybridization of their localized plasmon resonances, strong local field-enhancements and a redshift of the resonance towards the NIR range. The possibility to combine excellent transport properties and optical transparency on the same plasmonic metasurface template is appealing in applications where low-energy photon management is mandatory like e.g., in plasmon enhanced spectroscopies or in photon harvesting for ultrathin photovoltaic devices. The remarkable lateral order of the plasmonic NS gratings provides an additional degree of freedom for tailoring the optical response of the multifunctional electrodes via the excitation of surface lattice resonances, a Fano-like coupling between the broad localised plasmonic resonances and the collective sharp Rayleigh modes.

Highly porous Germanium surfaces with uniformly distributed columnar nanovoid structures are fabricated over a large area (wafer scale) by large fluence Sn+ irradiation through a thin silicon nitride layer. The latter represents a one-step highly reproducible approach with no material loss to strongly increase photon harvesting into a semiconductor active layer by exploiting the moth-eye antireflection effect. The ion implantation through the nitride cap layer allows fabricating porous nanostructures with high aspect ratio, which can be tailored by varying ion fluence. By comparing the reflectivity of nanoporous Ge films with a flat reference we demonstrate a strong and omnidirectional reduction in the optical reflectivity by a factor of 96% in the selected spectral regions around 960 nm and by a factor of 67.1% averaged over the broad spectral range from 350 to 1800 nm. Such highly anti-reflective nanostructured Ge films prepared over large-areas with a self-organized maskless approach have the potential to impact real world applications aiming at energy harvesting.

Flat optics nanogratings supported on thin free-standing membranes offer the opportunity to combine narrowband waveguided modes and Rayleigh anomalies for sensitive and tunable biosensing. At the surface of high-refractive index Si3N4 membranes we engineered lithographic nanogratings based on plasmonic nanostripes, demonstrating the excitation of sharp waveguided modes and lattice resonances. We achieved fine tuning of these optical modes over a broadband Visible and Near-Infrared spectrum, in full agreement with numerical calculations. This possibility allowed us to select sharp waveguided modes supporting strong near-field amplification, extending for hundreds of nanometres out of the grating and enabling versatile biosensing applications. We demonstrate the potential of this flat-optics platform by devising a proof-of-concept nanofluidic refractive index sensor exploiting the long-range waveguided mode operating at the sub-picoliter scale. This free-standing device configuration, that could be further engineered at the nanoscale, highlights the strong potential of flat-optics nanoarrays in optofluidics and nanofluidic biosensing.

In this work the sensitivity of Bloch Surface Waves to laser-induced anisotropy of azo-polymeric thin layers is expe rimentally shown . The nanoscale reshaping of the films via thermal-Scanning Probe Lithography allows to couple light to circular photonic nanocavities, tailoring on-demand resonant BSW confined within the nanocavity.

Nanofabrication of flat optic silica gratings conformally layered with two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 is demonstrated over large area (cm2), achieving a strong amplification of the photon absorption in the active 2D layer. The anisotropic subwavelength silica gratings induce a highly ordered periodic modulation of the MoS2 layer, promoting the excitation of Guided Mode Anomalies (GMA) at the interfaces of the 2D layer. We show the capability to achieve a broadband tuning of these lattice modes from the visible (VIS) to the near-infrared (NIR) by simply tailoring the illumination conditions and/or the period of the lattice. Remarkably, we demonstrate the possibility to strongly confine resonant and nonresonant light into the 2D MoS2 layers via GMA excitation, leading to a strong absorption enhancement as high as 240% relative to a flat continuous MoS2 film. Due to their broadband and tunable photon harvesting capabilities, these large area 2D MoS2 metastructures represent an ideal scalable platform for new generation devices in nanophotonics, photo- detection and -conversion, and quantum technologies.

A cost effective method to tailor the optical response of large-area nanosheets of 2D materials is described. A reduced effective metalayer model is introduced to capture the key-role of the out-of-plane component of the dielectric tensor. Such a model indicates that the optical extinction of 2D materials can be strongly altered by controlling the geometry at the local (i.e., subwavelength) scale. In particular, a giant linear optical dichroism at normal incidence is demonstrated, with major features around the excitonic peaks, that can be tailored by acting on the average curvature and slope of the nanosheets. The approach is experimentally demonstrated in few-layer MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition on cm-scale anisotropic nanopatterned substrates prepared by a self-assembling technique, based on defocused ion beam sputtering. Major variations in the photoluminescence spectrum as a function of the average curvature and slope are also revealed. A full-vectorial numerical study beyond the effective metalayer model and comprising strain effects induced by the geometry turns out to be consistent with such a complex scenario. The results demonstrate that the extrinsic geometrical engineering definitely opens viable way to tailor the optical properties and modulate bandgap of low dimensional materials.

Flat optics nanoarrays based on few-layer MoS2 are homogeneously fabricated over large-area (cm2) transparent templates, demonstrating effective tailoring of the photon absorption in two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers. The subwavelength subtractive re-shaping of the few-layer MoS2 film into a one-dimensional (1D) nanostripe array results in a pronounced photonic anomaly, tunable in a broadband spectral range by simply changing the illumination conditions (or the lattice periodicity). This scheme promotes efficient coupling of light to the 2D TMD layers via resonant interaction between the MoS2 excitons and the photonic lattice, with subsequent enhancement of absorption exceeding 400% relative to the flat layer. In parallel, an ultra-broadband absorption amplification in the whole visible spectrum is achieved, thanks to the non-resonant excitation of substrate guided modes promoted by MoS2 nanoarrays. These results highlight the potential of nanoscale re-shaped 2D TMD layers for large-area photon harvesting in layered nanophotonics, quantum technologies and new-generation photovoltaics.

The urgent environmental and energy challenges require novel solutions for efficient light harvesting and conversion in new-generation ultra-thin devices. Plasmonic nanoantennas and flat optics nanogratings can promote light matter interaction at the nanoscale being very attractive for ultra-thin photonics and sensing applications. In this work we developed two light trapping solutions based on large-scale nanomaterials. The first system is a large-scale (cm2) plasmonic metasurface based on self-organized gold nanostripes. The second is based on the periodic re-shaping of ultra-thin semiconducting MoS2 layers forming large-area flat-optics nanogratings. Under this condition Rayleigh Anomalies can be resonantly excited thus promoting in-plane light confinement and photon absorption into the few-layers material. To demonstrate the impact of these nanopatterned systems in photon harvesting we probed their efficiency into a prototypal photochemical reaction: the photo-bleaching of Methylene Blue (MB). We demonstrate the resonant enhancement of the photo-bleaching of these polluting dye molecules promoted either by the localized plasmon resonance in Au nanostripes or by the Rayleigh Anomaly in flat-optics MoS2 nanogratings. We investigate this effect through a quantitative analysis of the solution photodissociation induced by a monochromatic light. These results show the strong potential of flat-optics templates for light-harvesting and energy conversion in ultra-thin photonic devices.

Bidirectional nanoantennas are of key relevance for advanced functionalities to be implemented at the nanoscale, and in particular for color routing in an ultracompact flat-optics configuration. Here we demonstrate a novel approach avoiding complex collective geometries and/or restrictive morphological parameters, based on cross-polarized detuned plasmonic nanoantennas in a uniaxial (quasi-1D) bimetallic configuration. The nanofabrication of such a flat-optics system is controlled over a large-area (cm^2) by a novel self-organized technique exploiting ion-induced nanoscale wrinkling instability on glass templates to engineer tilted bimetallic nanostrip dimers. These nanoantennas feature broadband color routing with superior light scattering directivity figures, which are well described by numerical simulations and turn out to be competitive with the response of lithographic nanoantennas. These results demonstrate that our large-area self-organized metasurfaces can be implemented in real world applications of flat optics color routing from telecom photonics to optical nanosensing., 25+8 pages, 5+4 figures

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) are exploited due to their intriguing properties for the fabrication and miniaturization of photonic circuits, for surface-enhanced spectroscopy and imaging beyond the diffraction limit. However, excitation of these plasmonic modes by direct illumination is forbidden by energy/momentum conservation rules. One strategy to overcome this limitation relies on diffraction gratings to match the wavevector of the incoming photons with that of propagating SPP excitations. The main limit of the approaches so far reported in the literature is that they rely on highly ordered diffraction gratings fabricated by means of demanding nanolithographic processes. In this work, we demonstrate that an innovative, fully self-organized method based on wrinklingassisted ion-beam sputtering can be exploited to fabricate large-area (cm(2) scale) nanorippled soda lime templates, which conformally support ultrathin Au films deposited by physical deposition. The self-organized patterns act as quasi-one-dimensional (1D) gratings characterized by a remarkably high spatial order, which properly matches the transverse photon coherence length. The gratings can thus enable the excitation of hybrid SPP modes confined at the Au/dielectric interfaces, with a resonant wavelength that can be tuned by modifying the grating period, photon incidence angle, or, potentially, the choice of the thin-film conductive material. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering experiments show promising gains in the range of 103, which are competitive, even before a systematic optimization of the sample fabrication parameters, with state-of-the art lithographic systems, demonstrating the potential of such templates for a broad range of optoelectronic applications aiming at plasmon-enhanced photon harvesting for molecular or biosensing.

Hybrid plasmonic-semiconductor assemblies are receiving considerable attention due to the possibility to achieve hot-carrier-based photodetection. In this context, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) coupled to metal nanostructures are very promising. However, the plasmon-to-TMD carrier injection process is extremely challenging to achieve and even to reveal in a clear-cut way. Herein, a report of multiple transient absorption ultrafast measurements, with tunable pump excitation, enabling quantitative comparison between the ultrafast behavior of metal nanostructures, TMDs, and their assembly is shown. This allows to provide the evidence of plasmon-enhanced charge injection from Au nanostripes to a rippled-shaped molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) few-layer nanosheet. Finite element method numerical simulations and modeling of the transient optical response corroborate the charge transfer mechanism, showing that the experimental data cannot be described in terms of the thermomodulational nonlinearity of gold nanostripes or by simple superposition of metal and semiconductor responses. The sample is obtained by a self-organization process on a large area; this demonstrates that plasmon-enhanced photon harvesting exploiting hot-electron injection can be achieved on a large area (approximately cm(2)) surface and provides a substantial advancement toward scalable ultrathin photodetection devices based on hot-electrons technology.

Plasmonic metasurfaces based on quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nanostripe arrays are homogeneously prepared over large-area substrates (cm2), exploiting a novel self-organized nanofabrication method. Glass templates are nanopatterned by ion beam-induced anisotropic nanoscale wrinkling, enabling the maskless confinement of quasi-1D arrays of out-of-plane tilted gold nanostripes, behaving as transparent wire-grid polarizer nanoelectrodes. These templates enable the dichroic excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances, easily tunable over a broadband spectrum from the visible to the near- and mid-infrared, by tailoring the nanostripes’ shape and/or changing the illumination conditions. The controlled self-organized method allows the engineering of the nanoantennas’ morphology in the form of Au-SiO2-Au nanostripe dimers, which show hybridized plasmonic resonances with enhanced tunability. Under this condition, superior near-field amplification is achievable for the excitation of the hybridized magnetic dipole mode, as pointed out by numerical simulations. The high efficiency of these plasmonic nanoantennas, combined with the controlled tuning of the resonant response, opens a variety of applications for these cost-effective templates, ranging from biosensing and optical spectroscopies to high-resolution molecular imaging and nonlinear optics.

Substrates with engineered roughness are studied with the aim of achieving broadband and omnidirectional photon harvesting in thin film devices. Light coupling across the interfaces of a photonic device is induced by uniaxial pseudo-periodic gratings formed in a self-organised fashion via de-focused ion beam sputtering (IBS). The optical properties of the textured interfaces are assessed both experimentally and numerically using finite difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm, quantitatively demonstrating the optimal geometries which favour broadband diffuse scattering of radiation across the Vis-NIR spectral range. Thin film amorphous silicon solar cells based on the nanostructured patterns have been numerically studied via FDTD to assess absorption enhancement in comparison to flat reference devices, finding a 25% increase of short-circuit current, in good agreement with the experiment. Similar light trapping experiments performed on prototypical solar cells employing a PTB7:PC61BM organic absorber, allow to extend the general validity of the results to a relevant class of materials in the view of photovoltaic applications.

The lack of cost-effective systems for the assessment of air pollutants is a concern for health and safety in urban and industrial areas. The use of polymer thin films as label-free colorimetric sensors featuring specific interactions with pollutants would then represent a paradigm shift in environmental monitoring and packaging technologies, allowing to assess air quality, formation of byproducts in closed environment, and the barrier properties of the polymers. To this end, all-polymer distributed Bragg reflectors represent a promising approach toward a reliable and cost-effective transduction of chemical stimuli and effective colorimetric label-free selective detectors. We show selectivity attained by specific interactions between the polymer and analytes. Such interactions drive the analyte intercalation through the polymer structure and its kinetics, converting it in a dynamic optical response which is at the basis of the Flory-Huggins photonic sensors. The multivariate analyses of the response kinetics also allow distinguishing binary mixtures. Additionally, we demonstrate that such optical responses can be used to esteem the diffusion coefficients of small molecules within polymer media via simple UV-vis spectroscopy retrieving data comparable to those obtained with state-of-the-art gravimetric procedures. Last, we assess the figures of merit of the sensors in terms of lower detection limit, sensitivity, and reversibility, demonstrating that such devices can pave the way to an innovative, simple, and low-cost detection method integrable to in situ assessment of barrier polymers used for the encapsulation of optoelectronic devices, food packaging, and goods storage in general.

Pentacene is known to grow on isotropic silicon oxide surfaces in a substrate-induced phase with fiber textured crystallites. This growth study reports on the growth of pentacene crystallites on uniaxially oriented surfaces. Silica substrates have been treated by ion beam sputtering so that ripples with a lateral corrugation length of 38 nm and a surface roughness of 1.3 nm are formed. Pentacene thin films with a nominal thickness in the range from 20 nm up to 300 nm are deposited on top of the rippled surfaces. The films are characterized by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Bi-axially oriented crystals are formed due to the grooves of the substrate surface opening up the possibility of a defined in-plane alignment of the crystals. In a first stage of thin film growth, the thin film phase (TFP) of pentacene is formed, while in the later stage the bulk crystal structure (C, Campbell phase) also appears. Due to the bi-axial alignment of the crystallites the transition from the thin film phase to the bulk crystal structure can be directly investigated. An epitaxial relationship with (1 2 0)TFP || (2 1 0)C and [−2 1 0]TFP ||[1 −2 0]C is observed which can be explained by an adaption of the herringbone layers of both crystal structures. This work reveals one possible microscopic mechanism for the transition from the metastable substrate-induced phase of pentacene to its equilibrium bulk structure.

We report on the optical photomodulation properties of all-polymer planar microcavities in which the photochromic poly((4-pentyloxy-3’-methyl-4’-(6-methacryloxyhexyloxy))azobenzene) (PMA4) acts as photoresponsive cavity layer. We induce the trans-cis isomerization process of the azobenzene group by polarized 405 nm CW-laser irradiation, while the backward process is driven by unpolarized CW-laser irradiation at 442 nm. The all-optical photoisomerization process induces a remarkable in-plane anisotropic spectral shift of the cavity modes for the first and second order photonic band gaps. The spectral and intensity modulation effects for these flexible all-polymer microcavities are discussed with respect to those so far reported in literature for analogous systems.

We study the optical properties of Molybdenum Disulphide nanosheets deposited by chemical vapor deposition onto a nanopatterned substrate endowed with a uniaxial corrugation. The uniaxial nanocorrugation leads to a polarization dependence in steady state and an anisotropic relaxation around the C resonance. Finite element numerical simulations allow to better disclose the scenario. Our findings point towards new possibilities for the manipulation of the optical properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides via substrate nanopatterning.

Pattern formation induced by wrinkling is a very common phenomenon exhibited in soft-matter substrates. In all these systems wrinkles develop in presence of compressively stressed thin films lying on compliant substrates. Here we demonstrate the controlled growth of self-organized nanopatterns exploiting a wrinkling instability on a solid-state substrate. Soda-lime glasses are modified in the surface layers by a defocused ion beam which triggers the formation of a compressively stressed surface layer deprived of alkali ions. When the substrate is heated up near its glass transition temperature, the wrinkling instability boosts the growth rate of the pattern by about two orders of magnitude. High aspect ratio anisotropic ripples bound by faceted ridges are thus formed which represent an optimal template for guiding the growth of large area arrays of functional nanostructures. We demonstrate the engineering over large square cm areas of quasi-1D arrays of Au nanostripe dimers endowed with tunable plasmonic response, strong optical dichroism and high electrical conductivity. MoS2 and generally speaking, the wide family of transition-metal dichalcogenides represents a solid nanotechnology platform on which to engineer a wealth of new and outperforming applications involving 2D materials. An even richer flexibility can be gained by extrinsically inducing an in-plane shape anisotropy of the nanosheets. Here, the synthesis of anisotropic MoS2 nanosheets is proposed as a prototypical example in this respect starting from a highly conformal chemical vapor deposition on prepatterend substrates and aiming at the more general purpose of tailoring anisotropy of 2D nanosheets by design. This is envisioned to be a suitable configuration for strain engineering as far as strain can be spatially redistributed in morphologically different regions. With a similar approach, both the optical and electronic properties of the 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides can be tailored over macroscopic sample areas in a self-organized fashion, thus paving the way for new applications in the field of optical metasurfaces, light harvesting, and catalysis.

The engineering of self-organized plasmonic metasurfaces is demonstrated using a maskless technique with defocused ion-beam sputtering and kinetically controlled deposition. The proposed reliable, cost-effective, and controllable approach enables large-area (order of square centimeter) sub-wavelength periodic patterning with close-packed gold nanostrips. A multi-level variant of the method leads to high-resolution manufacturing of vertically stacked nanostrip dimer arrays, without resorting to lithographic approaches. The design of these self-organized metasurfaces is optimized by employing plasmon hybridization methods. In particular, preliminary results on the so-called gap-plasmon configuration of the nanostrip dimers, implementing magnetic dipole resonance in the near-infrared range, are reported. This resonance offers a superior sensitivity and field enhancement, compared with the more conventional electric dipole resonance. The translational invariance of the nanostrip configuration leads to a high filling factor of the hot spots. These advanced features make the large-area metasurface based on gap-plasmon nanostrip dimers very attractive for surface-enhanced linear and nonlinear spectroscopy (e.g., surface-enhanced Raman scattering) and plasmon-enhanced photon harvesting in solar and photovoltaic cells. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (MX 2 ) are receiving lot of attention in recent years due to their excellent electronic and optical properties which make them feasible for advanced photonics applications [1]. In particular Molybdenum-Disulfide (MoS 2 ) has shown large exciton binding energy, strong spin-orbit interaction, and high carrier mobilities.

We present a self-organizedmethod based on defocused ion beamsputtering for nanostructuring glass substrates which feature antireflective and light trapping effects. By irradiating the substrate, capped with a thin gold (Au) film, a self-organized Au nanowire stencil mask is firstly created. The morphology of the mask is then transferred to the glass surface by further irradiating the substrate, finally producing high aspect ratio, uniaxial ripple-like nanostructures whose morphological parameters can be tailored by varying the ion fluence. The effect of a Ti adhesion layer, interposed between glass and Au with the role of inhibiting nanowire dewetting, has also been investigated in order to achieve an improved morphological tunability of the templates. Morphological and optical characterization have been carried out, revealing remarkable light trapping performance for the largest ion fluences. The photon harvesting capability of the nanostructured glass has been tested for different preparation conditions by fabricating thin film amorphous Si solar cells. The comparison of devices grown on textured and flat substrates reveals a relative increase of the short circuit current up to 25%. However, a detrimental impact on the electrical performance is observed with the rougher morphologies endowed with steep v-shaped grooves. We finally demonstrate that post-growth ion beam restructuring of the glass template represents a viable approach toward improved electrical performance. © 2017 by the authors.

Manipulating the anisotropy in 2D nanosheets is a promising way to tune or trigger functional properties at the nanoscale. Here, a novel approach is presented to introduce a one-directional anisotropy in MoS2 nanosheets via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) onto rippled patterns prepared on ion-sputtered SiO2 /Si substrates. The optoelectronic properties of MoS2 are dramatically affected by the rippled MoS2 morphology both at the macro- and the nanoscale. In particular, strongly anisotropic phonon modes are observed depending on the polarization orientation with respect to the ripple axis. Moreover, the rippled morphology induces localization of strain and charge doping at the nanoscale, thus causing substantial redshifts of the phonon mode frequencies and a topography-dependent modulation of the MoS2 workfunction, respectively. This study paves the way to a controllable tuning of the anisotropy via substrate pattern engineering in CVD-grown 2D nanosheets.

The interaction of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) with the photonic modes in an opal photonic crystal is reported. Gold nanocrescents are evaporated at glancing angles over both microsphere monolayers and artificial opals. Microsphere monolayers allow the three localised plasmonic resonances observed in the nanocrescent optical spectra to be identified. By changing the microsphere diameter, the opal photonic stop band and a selected plasmonic resonance can be spectrally overlapped causing a dramatic change of the properties of both excitations. The creation of new modes is observed, whose spectral position and dispersion properties are a combination of those localised in nanoparticle plasmons and in the photonic crystal.

Self-organized Al nanowire (NW) electrodes have been obtained by defocused Ion Beam Sputtering (IBS) of polycrystalline Al films grown by sputter deposition. The electrical sheet resistance of the electrode has been acquired in situ during ion bombardment of the samples, evidencing an increase of the electronic transport anisotropy as a function of ion fluence between the two directions parallel and orthogonal to the NWs axis. Optical spectra in transmission also show a large dichroism between the two directions, suggesting the role of localized plasmons in the UV spectral range. The results show that Al NW electrodes, prepared under experimental conditions which are compatible with those of conventional industrial coaters and implanters, could represent a low cost alternative to the transparent conductive oxides employed in optoelectronic devices.

Gold nanospheres have been manipulated by atomic force microscopy on a rippled glass surface produced by ion beam sputtering and coated with an ultrathin (10 nm thick) graphitic layer. This substrate is characterized by irregular wavy grooves running parallel to a preferential direction. Measurements in ambient conditions show that the motion of the nanoparticles is confined to single grooves ('channels'), along which the particles move till they are trapped by local bottlenecks. At this point, the particles cross the ripple pattern in a series of consecutive jumps and continue their longitudinal motion along a different channel. Moreover, due to the asymmetric shape of the ripple profiles, the jumps occur in the direction of minimum slope, resembling a ratchet mechanism. Self-organized nanowire arrays are confined by glancing-angle Au deposition on nanopatterned glass templates prepared by ion beam sputtering. The semi-transparent 1D nanowire arrays are extended over large cm2 areas and are endowed with excellent electrical conductivity competitive with the best transparent conductive oxides (sheet resistance in the range of 5-20 Ohm sq-1). In addition, the nanowires support localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonances, which are easily tunable into the visible and near infrared spectrum and are selectively excited with incident light polarized perpendicularly to the wires. Such substrates, thus, behave as multifunctional nanoelectrodes, which combine good optoelectronic performance with dichroic plasmonic excitation. The electrical percolation process of the Au nanoelectrodes was monitored in situ during growth at glancing angle, both on flat and nanopatterned glass templates. In the first case, we observed a universal scaling of the differential percolation rate, independently of the glancing deposition angle, while deviations from the universal scaling were observed when Au was confined on nanopatterned templates. In the latter case, the pronounced shadowing effect promotes the growth of locally connected 1D Au nanosticks on the 'illuminated' ripple ridges, thus, introducing strong anisotropies with respect to the case of a 2D percolating network.

The generalized Snell's law of refraction was introduce by F. Capasso in 2011. One consequence of the law is that resonant metallic nanostructures at the interface between two dielectrics can bent the light in a controlled way. Alternatively, by measuring the bent of a beam of light induced by a nanopatterned metallic surface it is possible to retrieve information on the surface morphology. Here we show that deviation measurements of the light passing through curved metallic nanowires deposited on a glass slide gives information on the morphology only when the resonance is excited. Gold nanoparticles deposited on self-organized nano-ripple quartz substrates have been studied by spectroscopic Mueller matrix ellipsometry. The surface was found to have biaxial anisotropic optical properties. For electric field components normal to the ripples the periodic and disconnected nature of the in plane nanowires gives rise to an optical response dominated by the localized plasmon resonance. In the direction parallel to the ripples the gold nanoparticles are aligned closely leading to localized plasmon resonances in the infrared. As Au was deposited at an angle oblique to the surface normal, the gold nanoparticles were formed on the side of the ripples facing the incoming evaporation flux. This makes the gold particles slightly inclined, correspondingly the principal coordinate system of the biaxial dielectric tensor results tilted. The anisotropic plasmonic optical response results in a strong polarizing effect, making it suitable as a plasmonic nanowired grid polarizer. © 2013 Optical Society of America. Open access.

By using self-organized patterning of polycrystalline Au electrodes, we demonstrate that the electrical resistivity of the film can be forced to become strongly anisotropic by tailoring a nanoscale ripple undulation at the metal-vacuum interface. Electrons traveling orthogonally to the nanoripples are affected by a strong increase in resistivity, while when electrons travel parallel to the undulations of the rippled film, the resistivity is almost unaffected and even shows a slight reduction. The observations are quantitatively interpreted within the semiclassical size-effect regime in terms of an increase of surface scattering from the large-scale corrugations and of a reduction of diffuse scattering from atomic-scale roughness.

A self-organised approach for the synthesis of transparent metal nanowire arrays is based on defocused ion beam sputtering. The nanowire arrays, supported on low-cost dielectric substrates (glass slides), feature a dual functionality: they exhibit anisotropic conductivity, with sheet resistances which are reduced in comparison to those of transparent conductive oxides, and additionally they support localised plasmon resonances. The latter represents an attractive feature in view of plasmon enhanced photon harvesting applications, in which the nanostructured metal electrodes are employed as an alternative to conventional transparent conductive oxides.

Nanopatterns on metal surfaces can be easily created by ion sputtering. However, due to the fast diffusion processes characterizing these materials, the nanostructures are often unstable at room temperature and above. This effect prevents the use of such patterned substrates in nanotechnology applications. In this letter, we present a simple oxidation process able to stabilize these features durably. The method has been tested on Cu, but its generality suggests that it can be applied to many other metals.

We present the application of a near infra red Mueller matrix imaging ellipsometer to the characterization of plasmonic polarizers. The samples are prepared by evaporation of Au onto SiO2 ripples. The nanostructured ripple surface has been produced by ion beam sputtering at an off normal angle of incidence. Au was thereafter evaporated onto the surface at an grazing angle. As a result, thin lines of nearly connected Au nanoparticles form along the illuminated side of the ripples, resulting in a large in-plane anisotropy of the structure. Mueller matrix imaging is used to determine the lateral uniformity of the optical signal in correlation to the real space topography of the sample, and to determine to what degree the nanoparticles tend to form a connected wire, or whether there are well separated Au particles. The success of this method in order to produce polarizers, lies in controlling the process to allow well connected lines of Au particles along the ripples, with a high degree of homogeneity. Mueller Matrix images of the sample recorded at normal incidence are shown, and the information that can be extracted from such images is discussed.
