1. EIDA Italian node: seismic data curation preservation e dissemination

Abstract

The seismology data archive at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), a node of the EIDA federation, currently holds more than 100 TB of seismological waveform data. To guarantee a robust qualitatively superior service needs full care of every step about curation preservation and dissemination of data.It starts from seismic network inventory management and requires keeping track of all station and network related information and metadata.Our system has a modular design, whenever possible, by leveraging existing open-source solutions as a customized Tuleap implementation to realize the ticketing system, for injecting and tracking the changes and managing the station’s faults. The station metadata and channel responses are managed using the XML database eXist-db to store StationXML documents natively and a new implementation of the fdsnws-station based on it. Then GUI leverages Grafana creating a dashboard to present an overview of the system status of all components.Then we have deployed an semiautomatic sanity check of data to apply our policies and quality assessment before archive data using a rule managerOur policy for preservation is to make a replication (synchronized copy) at a new storage archive in Naples and a backup in the tape library.After all these steps we are ready to disseminate data through webservices and websites (https://eida.ingv.it/).To complete the service for users we are adding significant computational resources and an adequate processing and analysis framework combining Apache Spark, and ObsPy, creating a "computational archive" where storage resources and computational resources converge., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

There is limited data on demographic differences among patients who choose to undergo this procedure. Methods: The population-based Florida cancer registry, Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration data, and US census data were linked and queried for patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer from 1996 to 2009. The main outcome variable was the rate of CPM. Primary predictors were race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), marital status and insurance status. Results: Our population was 91.1% White and 7.5% Black; 89.1% non-Hispanic and 10.9% Hispanic. Out of 21,608 patients with a single unilateral invasive breast cancer lesion, 837 (3.9%) underwent CPM. Abstract

Background and aim of the work: Periprosthetic knee infection is a complication associated with prosthetic failure; incidence change from 0,4-2% of primary total knee replacement and 5,6% in revisions; incidence is increasing over the years. Two-stage revision is the technique used in chronic infection. Aim of the work is to check success rate in our data. Methods: We analyzed retrospectively data of patients who undergone two stage revision surgery between 01/01/2010 to 31/12/2015. We made a clinical and radiological control after 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 months and we evaluate the outcome in December 2016. Results: Between 2010 and 2015 we treated 45 patients with two-stage revision. Mean follow-up was 3,4 years. Success rate is 89,9%. We had failure in 5 patients: everyone had knee surgery before first knee arthroplasty and Charlson Comorbidity Score was greater then 4 in 4 cases. Conclusions: Two stage revision can be considered a successful treatment in chronic periprosthetic knee infection. It has an optimal success rate, but it has some disadvantages as joint stiffness and pain in the interval between stages. This is a technique with two major surgery procedure with associated morbidity, discomfort, cost and prolonged stay in hospital. (www.actabiomedica.it)

Abstract

The early Pleistocene travertines from Kocaba in the Denizli Basin (SW Turkey), from which the only known Homo erectus from Anatolia derives, are covered by a succession of lake deposits. So far, the taphonomic history of the site has precluded a detailed palaeoecological analysis. This paper details the sedimentary succession and palaeoenvironmental conditions by analysing the micro- and macro palaeontological species compositions. These data provide direct evidence of the opportunities and limiting factors of the environment inhabited by hominins during the early Pleistocene. Four distinctive lithostratigraphic units are recognized in the Quaternary succession, consisting of: Lower Travertine, Lower Conglomerates, Upper Travertine, and Upper Conglomerates. These units correspond to an alternation of lacustrine limestone, fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic deposits and subaerially precipitated travertine accumulations. The age of the succession is constrained by cosmogenic nuclide concentration, palaeomagnetic measurements and large mammal biostratigraphy which suggest deposition occurred between similar to 1.6 and 1.2 Ma. The travertine succession contains a moderately diverse macromammal fauna, including Homo erectus, decapod crustaceans and leaf imprints. The herbivore association likely dwelled in a mixed landscape during temperate and humid climatic conditions, supported by negative delta O-18 values from analysed gastropod and bivalve shells. The presence of an anomalohaline lake is indicated by an abundant and well-preserved ostracod community, consisting of alkaline tolerant taxa and freshwater genera further supported by the presence of cardiid bivalves. 34. Small animal imaging with pinhole single-photon emission computed tomography

Abstract

Background. High resolution spatial details of the distribution of activity in three dimensions is required to evaluate the localization and dosimetric properties of radiolabelled monoclonal antibodies in tumors and normal tissues. Planar imaging of small animals with a resolution of 5-10 mm is usually the imaging modality of choice. The authors investigated high resolution singlephoton emission computed tomographic (SPECT) imaging, based on a rotating pinhole scintillation camera. Although the sensitivity of the pinhole collimator is low, several radionuclides offer suitable decay properties to perform pinhole SPECT, especially in conjunction with high activity levels used in radioimmunotherapy. Methods. Transverse, sagittal, and coronal sections were reconstructed using a three-dimensional conebeam algorithm, which is a generalization of the two-dimensional fan-beam filtered backprojection algorithm. Before reconstruction, the pinhole projections were corrected for the decay of the radionuclide, geometric and intrinsic efficiency variations of the camera system, and center of rotation shift. Results. The spatial resolution at 50 mm from the pinhole collimator with 3.3 mm aperture was 3.4 mm, and the sensitivity 7.2 c/s/[mu]Ci for technetium-99m. With the 2 mm collimator the resolution was 2.2 mm, and the sensitivity was 2.6 c/s/[mu]Ci. To show the spatial resolution in vivo, a rat was injected with 185 MBq of technetium-99m-methylene diphosphonate or with 5 mCi technetium-99m-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime. The bone structures were well delineated in the methylene diphosphonate image, and in the hexamethylpropylene amine oxime image, the brain was nicely shown. For comparison a magnetic resonance image for the same section was done. Conclusions. High resolution SPECT imaging with the pinhole collimator provides mapping of the activity in three-dimensions, needed for more detailed biodistribution data and to perform more accurate dosimetry.

Abstract

Rapid-response seismic networks are an important element in the response to seismic crises. They temporarily improve the detection performance of permanent monitoring systems during seismic sequences. The improvement in earthquake detection and location capabilities can be important for decision makers to assess the current situation, and can provide invaluable data for scientific studies related to hazard, tectonics and earthquake physics. Aftershocks and the clustering of the locations of seismic events help to characterize the dimensions of the causative fault. Knowing the number, size and timing of the aftershocks or the clustering seismic events can help in the foreseeing of the characteristics of future seismic sequences in the same tectonic environment. Instrumental rapid response requires a high degree of preparedness. A mission in response to a magnitude (Ml) 6 event with a rupture length of a few tens of kilometers might involve the deployment within hours to days of 30-50 seismic stations in the middle of a disaster area of some hundreds of square kilometers, and the installation of an operational center to help in the logistics and communications. Abstract

International audience; Wood is an excellent indicator of the tree growing environment. In most species, cambial activity is not constant throughout the year and anatomical structures, such as growth rings, vessels or fibres characteristics, record, during their formation, environmental events. This study, at the interface of several disciplines, focuses on the analysis of the inter- and intra-specific wood anatomical variability and on the search for - climatic and environmental – markers recorded in the heart of the wood anatomical structure. Wood anatomical variability in ring-porous species has been successfully employed in the past few years to extract the climate (temperature, precipitation) and environmental signals from tree rings (flood, insect defoliation). However, very little is known about the ability of diffuse- and semi-ring-porous species to record environmental signals in their xylem cells. This study was therefore undertaken to characterize the wood anatomical response of diffuse-porous species Alnus glutinosa and of the semi-ring-porous Fagus sylvatica and Prunus avium. Wood anatomical response to environmental parameters was assessed through the analysis of wood anatomical differences of approximately 750 growth rings of the three species sampled along a geographic gradient from north Spain to north France and Czech Republic. Image analysis was used to measure diverse classical and original wood anatomical features as growth ring width, porosity index, mean vessel area... Despite the existence of numerous distortions as false rings and narrow rings expressing respectively dominated and senescent states of the sampled trees, statistical analyses allowed us, to propose meteorological and global climate “answer scenarios” for each of the studied species. These last results can be used in the future for the re-examination of fossil wood material, in an attempt of palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction.
