In this article are examined, mainly in the light of literary sources, the figures of Agrippina Minor and the freedwoman Claudia Atte, respectively mother and concubine of the emperor Nero. In particular, in the complex relationship between mother and son, beyond the malevolent gossip that prefigures incest, Agrippina's desire to consolidate the marriage of her son with (Claudia) Octavia, the latter being the daughter of the emperor Claudius, for eminently dynastic reasons and to consolidate the imperial legitimacy of Nero himself, plays a notable role.

In questo articolo viene indagata l'ambiguità del ruolo delle Augustae ovvero delle "Imperial Women" nell'impero romano dei primi due secoli, sia per quanto riguarda il loro ruolo nella domus Augusta e nella società coeva, sia per quanto riguarda la loro caratterizzazione storiografica, prevalentemente negativa.

Una delle maggiori difficoltà nello studio della condizione femminile di età romana riguarda il messaggio sostanzialmente contraddittorio che comunicano le diverse tipologie di fonti in nostro possesso, vale a dire le fonti letterarie e i documenti della prassi. Questo studio analizza tale contraddittorietà nella rappresentazione di Pompeia Plotina e Ulpia Marciana, rispettivamente moglie e sorella dell'imperatore Traiano

Le iscrizioni romane di Rimini, quelle che ci sono materialmente giunte e quelle che sono state conservate nel codice rigazziano, consentono di mettere in evidenza soprattutto due aspetti peculiari delle attività edilizie riminesi: un importante intervento edilizio sulla viabilità pubblica in età augustea e la coltivazione della memoria di alcune famiglie per il tramite della (ri)collocazione nel foro di basi onorarie, anche di quelle già collocate altrove.

This chapter takes into consideration six women, chosen because they represent the continuity of the Julio-Claudian family: Julia the Elder, Agrippina the Elder, Claudia Livia Julia, Valeria Messalina, and Agrippina the Younger. These women represent the most direct link with the charismatic blood of the founder of the empire, especially after his divinization. These women had the task of transmitting the blood of the god Augustus to their successors.These ties, necessary for the succession of the emperor and functional to the role of these women at court, are highlighted by their marriages. Until Nero’s death in 68 CE, the emperor always belonged to the same Julio-Claudian family and the women examined in this chapter were the mothers of aspiring, designated, or actual successors.

In this paper some women belonging to the Julio-Claudian domus are examined: Livia, Julia, Agrippina the Elder, Claudia Livia Julia, Valeria Messalina and Agrippina the Jounger. Their real life and history are difficult to reconstruct, as their role was evidently manipulated by historiographic sources especially to denigrate the emperors in power, but it is clear that their role was to become mothers, ie generate a legitimate successor to the emperor. There is no doubt that the idea of fertility and, therefore, of dynastic continuity is already associated, from Augustus, with the "First Lady" of the imperial house, a fact that gave the women who belonged to the domus Augusta a function of legitimisation of the male imperial power. It is therefore inevitable that their story is told always and in any case in relation to events in which men are the leader.

This paper analyses the reasons for the use of the memory of the wife and daughter of Emperor Vespasian, Flavia Domitilla the Elder and Flavia Domitilla the Younger, both died before 69 A.D., the year in which Vespasian became Emperor. This memory is mainly recov- ered by Domitian; in particular, this recovery is investigated in relation to the role played in the Flavian domus by Julia, daughter of Titus.

Germanicus had at his side in his not long life some women who were described by Latin sources with essentially negative tones based on their behaviour: his mother Antonia Minor, his wife Agrippina Maggiore and his sister Claudia Livia Giulia. In this paper I try to analyze the role of these female figures in Germanicus’ life and I try to understand the progressive construction of such negative judgements.

In questo contributo per la prima volta sono studiate le iscrizioni latine di età romana classica che potevano essere diversamente visibili nella Rimini di Sigismondo Malatesta. Parimenti viene studiato l'interesse che gli intellettuali di questa corte malatestiana hanno dimostrato nei confronti dei modelli dell'epigrafia classica, in modo particolare per comporre l'iscrizione sulla facciata del cd. Tempio Malatestiano.

This text analyses some family groups attested on funerary inscriptions coming from the VIII regio of Italy; the composition of these families cannot be determined with certainty. The epigraphic documentation testifies the heterogenous character of Roman society, wich becomes always more complexe above all in presence of freedmen. In any case, this heterogeneity represents one of most important assets of the Roman society.

Il contesto cultuale dell’iscrizione dedicata da Iulia Augusta e Tiberio al divus Augustus pater presumibilmente posta in prossimità del teatro di Marcello identifica la paternità di Augusto con il fondamento stesso del principato: la moglie-figlia adottiva è sacerdotessa del culto e il figlio adottivo e figlio naturale della precedente è l’Augusto che ne garantirà la continuazione. In questo “spazio epigrafico” comunicativo Iulia Augusta precede Tiberio in quanto sacerdos del divus Augustus; non c’è dubbio che la sequenza dei nomi dei protagonisti dipenda dal contesto di riferimento cultuale, ma, in ogni caso, la comunicazione del potere politico e istituzionale, esclusivamente maschile, è quella tradizionale basata sulla titolatura dell’imperatore. I rumores sulle ambizioni di potere di Livia e sui suoi contrasti con il figlio imperatore saranno oggetto dei pettegolezzi di autori posteriori, quando il principato sarà diventato una realtà irreversibile assieme alle sue derive assolutiste.

Una delle figure più discusse e controverse della storia della dinastia giulio-claudia è senz'altro Agrippina Minore, figlia di Germanico e di Agrippina Maggiore, sorella dell'imperatore Caligola, moglie dell'imperatore Claudio e madre dell'imperatore Nerone. Il saggio cerca di metterne in luce le attività e il ruolo politico-dinastico, al di là della valutazione negativa degli storici romani classici.

La congiura politica che vede coinvolti Caio Silio e Messalina viene censurata e declassata, nella vulgata di regime, a banale adulterio (fake news) e la memoria di Messalina non soltanto è damnata, come prova l’erasione del suo nome sulle pietre, ma, proprio per dare corpo a tale versione, si costruisce l’immagine di un personaggio femminile totalmente dedito a una lussuria incontrollata e incontrollabile. Questa immagine serve a un duplice scopo: demolire la figura dell'imperatore Claudio, zimbello delle donne e dei liberti, e, soprattutto, negare intelligenza politica alle donne.

This article analyses a large funerary stele, found as early as 1500 in Bologna area and datable to the end of the Republican age. The iconography and writing of the three liberti represented here are compared; on the basis of this comparison, the document is placed in relation with the Augustan policy on the territory, especially the colonization documented by literary and archaeological sources.

In this paper the relationship between Julius Caesar Octavianus, i.e., Emperor Augustus, and Livia is examined. This is an unusually long-lasting relationship (which will come to an end only with Augustus' death in 14 A.D.), despite its lack of offspring and, therefore, in open contrast with the policies of demographic growth promoted by Augustus himself by way of his controversial legislation. With regard to this, the interpersonal relationship between the two spouses has been inspected and also their inner relational dynamics, drawing on the scant (and ultimately contradictory) sources available to us. In particular, it has been investigated: the stability of power ensured through this marriage, the legacy of the marriage, the impact of the role-model represented by their relationship, the definition of the feminine role in the new Augustan "court" through this marriage, the subsequent employment of such a relationship as a source of legitimation of new imperial powers. One of the most interesting aspects worth investigating is the fact that, in my opinion, within this "exceptional" and crucial relationship for the construction of the Augustan power stands an element alien to the couple stricto sensu, that is to say, Livia's previous maternity. This element is not only "incorporated" and made functional to the dynamics of the wedded couple, but it even guarantees the continuity of the imperial power itself. For Augustus' successor is Tiberius, that is, the son born from Livia's first wedding with Tiberius Claudius Nero, originally an opponent of Octavian.

A long «hidden» inscription in the Museum of Rimini’s warehouses is now on display to the public of the «Visitor Center Arimini caput viarum». It deals with the right part of a forehead of sarcophagus mentioning a sacerdos of diva Sabina. Relying on an accurate autopsy of the stone and its measurements it is possible to hypothesize that inside the panel for writing on there is sufficient space at line 4 for writing the title of mater coloniae.

In this paper are examinated two funeral iscriptions just published and found in the necropolis of S. Lazzaro (Reggio Emilia). In these inscriptions the same man is probably mentioned. This man is married to two women who have the same name (Octavia Batylla), but who are of different legal status: one free, the other freedwoman. Comparing similar inscriptions, it can be argued that the wealth of these women was also due to their involvement in the textile production.

This paper examines some inscriptions that mention women slaves or freedwomen, especially from the city of Modena and its territory. Their employment is assumed in the flourishing textile business in the area, which could have allowed them, in some cases, to be freed and possibly to improve their economic condition.

Francesca Cenerini, Notizie di economia dall'iscrizione riminese CIL XI 419, p. 21-30. Viene esaminata l'iscrizione riminese CIL XI 419, nota dalla tradizione. Si tratta di una dedica posta dai vicani del vicus Cermali a L. Septimius Liberalis. Il motivo della dedica è rappresentato dai fatto che Settimio Liberale ha effettuato per via testamentaria un lascito, per cui ogni anno i decurioni e i vicani dei sette vici della città di Rimini possano ricevere tre denari a testa. Il lascito è garantito dall'obligatio di 21 fundi (la cd. obligatio praediorum), dai quali, però, è stata detratta la sesta parte dai tutori di Settimia Prisca, figlia di Settimio Liberale, in virtù dei dettami della lex Falcidia. L'iscrizione si conclude con la clausola Lepidia Septimina (probabile nipote ed erede del testatore) populo concessit. L'esegesi del testo si presenta complessa, a cominciare dalla problematica menzione di una partem VI lege Falcidia, invece che quarta. Con ogni probabilità, il documente riflette due, forse tre, fasi successorie, ed è stato redatto e trascritto su pietra a garanzia della rendita finanziaria dei vicani riminesi nel corso del tempo., Cenerini Francesca. The focus of this chapter is the use of the titles mater and parens , awarded to prominent women as means of describing relationships between them and civic communities. Women could play important roles in the public life of Roman cities in the West, and some of them were rewarded with the title mater . The chapter discusses on a small group of Latin inscriptions that attest to the use of the terms mater or parens to indicate an institutional relationship between the woman mentioned in the inscriptions and the town. In the towns of the Roman Empire we find few attestations of matres municipii or coloniae . All of these are in Italy: one or two are found in Rimini, one in Sentino (the woman is called mater municipalis ), and one in Teramo; a female parens municipii is documented in Foligno. We basically have a double portrait ofAugustae women, which means those who belonged to domus Augusta. Ancient historians mostly describe them as thirsty of power and obsessed by sexual desire. Whereas the coins, the iconography and the official inscriptions gave us a propagandist image, focused especially on the fact that the Augusta is supposed to give an heir to the Emperor. The purpose of this work is to analyze the Augustae's eventual "popular" success. In order to do it, it was firstly catalogued all the epigraphic material useful for this type of research. These inscriptions are not many and, at present state of the research, they let us analyze the popular favour of two Augustae: the acclamations written on Pompei walls for Poppea, Nerone's wife, and Faustina Minore's role as marriage guarantor and protector.

Nuova interpretazione della figura e della politica di Valeria Messalina, terza moglie dell'imperatore Claudio e madre dei suoi figli Ottavia e Britannico alla luce dei dati forniti dalle fonti letterarie, numismatiche, epigrafiche e archeologiche.

Francesca Cbnerini, Scritture di santuari extraurbani tra le Alpi e gli Appennini, p. 91-107. In questo contributo sono studiate le scritture di alcune iscrizioni sacre cisalpine, pertinenti ad ambito extraurbano. Tale documentazione è stata scelta, a titolo di esemplificazione, all'interno di una vasta gamma di rinvenimenti, utili a delineare una sorta di «geografia sacra extramurana» della Cisalpina che si presenta, per le sue particolari caratteristiche, nutrita da numerose problematiche e che pone molteplici interrogativi. Ove possibile, sono stati inoltre studiati i rapporti tra queste iscrizioni, i santuari du pertinenza e le officine epigrafiche che le hanno prodotte. Dalla documentazione esaminata emerge che tale linguaggio epigrafico riproduce, sostanzialmente, come costanti di espressione, gli stilemi di città, semplifica e riduce ad elementi sostanziali i formulari e gli apparati (v. retro) dedicatori propri del linguaggio religioso in genere, codificati e sperimentati come validi dai collegi sacerdotali. Come caratteristica peculiare, si nota il particolare rilievo della causale della dedica, del tutto funzionale alla collocazione extraurbana di tali santuari, meta di specifici pellegrinaggi, da rapportarsi, in ogni caso, alole particolari prerogative e valenze delle divinità titolari e dei santuari stessi., Cenerini Francesca.
