The goal of the present study is to construct, test, and validate a high-resolution synthetic spectral library using PHOENIX model atmospheres and develop a reliable tool to estimate stellar parameters from high-resolution optical and/or near-infrared spectra of M dwarfs. We report here the preliminary results of tests characterizing main sequence G–K stars from high-resolution spectra. We anchored the atomic line-list using the stellar standards Sun, ξ Boo A, and ϵ Eri to ensure the synthetic spectra computed with PHOENIX reproduce their observed counterparts. These stars were chosen because their parameters are very well characterized, and on which the absolute accuracy of our method depends on. We successfully estimated the stellar parameters with associated error bars for 17 stars. Using a pseudo Monte Carlo statistical analysis, we present overall improved uncertainties on the stellar parameters compared to those in the literature (on average 9 K, 0.014 dex, and 0.008 dex for the effective temperature, the surface gravity, and the metallicity, respectively). Our estimated stellar parameters are also in good agreement with values found in the literature.

We present simultaneous HST WFC3 + Spitzer IRAC variability monitoring for the highly-variable young ($\sim$20 Myr) planetary-mass object PSO J318.5-22. Our simultaneous HST + Spitzer observations covered $\sim$2 rotation periods with Spitzer and most of a rotation period with HST. We derive a period of 8.6$\pm$0.1 hours from the Spitzer lightcurve. Combining this period with the measured $v sin i$ for this object, we find an inclination of 56.2$\pm 8.1^{\circ}$. We measure peak-to-trough variability amplitudes of 3.4$\pm$0.1$\%$ for Spitzer Channel 2 and 4.4 - 5.8$\%$ (typical 68$\%$ confidence errors of $\sim$0.3$\%$) in the near-IR bands (1.07-1.67 $\mu$m) covered by the WFC3 G141 prism -- the mid-IR variability amplitude for PSO J318.5-22 one of the highest variability amplitudes measured in the mid-IR for any brown dwarf or planetary mass object. Additionally, we detect phase offsets ranging from 200--210$^{\circ}$ (typical error of $\sim$4$^{\circ}$) between synthesized near-IR lightcurves and the Spitzer mid-IR lightcurve, likely indicating depth-dependent longitudinal atmospheric structure in this atmosphere. The detection of similar variability amplitudes in wide spectral bands relative to absorption features suggests that the driver of the variability may be inhomogeneous clouds (perhaps a patchy haze layer over thick clouds), as opposed to hot spots or compositional inhomogeneities at the top-of-atmosphere level., Comment: 48 pages, 22 figures, accepted to AJ

The main purpose of Commission 14 is to foster interactions between the astronomical community and those conducting research on atoms, molecules, and solid state particles to provide data vital to reducing and analysing astronomical observations and performing theoretical investigations.

Different from previous triennial reports, this report covers the activities of IAU Commission 36 ‘Theory of Stellar Atmospheres’ over the pastsixyears†, and will be the last report from the ‘old’ Commission 36. After the General Assembly in Honolulu (August 2015), a new Commission ‘Stellar and Planetary Atmospheres’ (C.G5, under Division G, ‘Stars and Stellar Physics’) has come into life, and will continue our work devoted to the outer envelopes of stars, as well as extend it to the atmospheres of planets (see Sect. 4).

The ability to perform detailed chemical analysis of Sun-like F-, G-, and K-type stars is a powerful tool with many applications including studying the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and constraining planet formation theories. Unfortunately, complications in modeling cooler stellar atmospheres hinders similar analysis of M-dwarf stars. Empirically-calibrated methods to measure M dwarf metallicity from moderate-resolution spectra are currently limited to measuring overall metallicity and rely on astrophysical abundance correlations in stellar populations. We present a new, empirical calibration of synthetic M dwarf spectra that can be used to infer effective temperature, Fe abundance, and Ti abundance. We obtained high-resolution (R~25,000), Y-band (~1 micron) spectra of 29 M dwarfs with NIRSPEC on Keck II. Using the PHOENIX stellar atmosphere modeling code (version 15.5), we generated a grid of synthetic spectra covering a range of temperatures, metallicities, and alpha-enhancements. From our observed and synthetic spectra, we measured the equivalent widths of multiple Fe I and Ti I lines and a temperature-sensitive index based on the FeH bandhead. We used abundances measured from widely-separated solar-type companions to empirically calibrate transformations to the observed indices and equivalent widths that force agreement with the models. Our calibration achieves precisions in Teff, [Fe/H], and [Ti/Fe] of 60 K, 0.1 dex, and 0.05 dex, respectively and is calibrated for 3200 K < Teff < 4100 K, -0.7 < [Fe/H] < +0.3, and -0.05 < [Ti/Fe] < +0.3. White Paper prospective. This book is dedicated to the memory of our colleague Olivier Chesneau who passed away at the age of 41. v2 includes some corrections to text; High spatial resolution is the key for the understanding various astrophysical phenomena. But even with the future E-ELT, single dish instruments are limited to a spatial resolution of about 4 mas in the visible. For the closest objects within our Galaxy most of the stellar photosphere remains smaller than 1 mas. With the success of long baseline interferometry these limitations were soom overcome. Today low and high resolution interferometric instruments on the VLTI and CHARA offer an immense range of astrophysical studies. Combining more telescopes and moving to visible wavelengths broadens the science cases even more. With the idea of developing strong science cases for a future visible interferometer, we organized a science group around the following topics: pre-main sequence and main sequence stars, fundamental parameters, asteroseismology and classical pulsating stars, evolved stars, massive stars, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and imaging techniques. A meeting was organized on the 15th and 16th of January, 2015 in Nice with the support of the Action Specific in Haute Resolution Angulaire (ASHRA), the Programme National en Physique Stellaire (PNPS), the Lagrange Laboratory and the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur, in order to present these cases and to discuss them further for future visible interferometers. We present NIR synthetic spectra based on PHOENIX stellar atmosphere models of typical early and mid M dwarfs with varied C and O abundances. We apply multiple recently published methods for determining M dwarf metallicity to our models to determine the effect of C and O abundances on metallicity indicators. We find that the pseudo-continuum level is very sensitive to C/O and that all metallicity indicators show a dependence on C and O abundances, especially in lower Teff models. In some cases the inferred metallicity ranges over a full order of magnitude (>1 dex) when [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] are varied independently by +/-0.2. We also find that [(O-C)/Fe], the difference in O and C abundances, is a better tracer of the pseudo-continuum level than C/O. Models of mid-M dwarfs with [C/Fe], [O/Fe], and [M/H] that are realistic in the context of galactic chemical evolution suggest that variation in [(O-C)/Fe] is the primary physical mechanism behind the M dwarf metallicity tracers investigated here. Empirically calibrated metallicity indicators are still valid for most nearby M dwarfs due to the tight correlation between [(O-C)/Fe] and [Fe/H] evident in spectroscopic surveys of solar neighborhood FGK stars. Variations in C and O abundances also affect the spectral energy distribution of M dwarfs. Allowing [O/Fe] to be a free parameter provides better agreement between synthetic spectra and observed spectra of metal-rich M dwarfs. We suggest that flux-calibrated, low-resolution, NIR spectra can provide a path toward measuring C and O abundances in M dwarfs and breaking the degeneracy between C/O and [Fe/H] present in M dwarf metallicity indicators., accepted for publication in ApJ, all synthetic spectra available at http://people.bu.edu/mveyette/phoenix/, v2 - corrected figures 1 and 2 y-axis

The spectral transition from Very Low Mass stars (VLMs) to brown dwarfs (BDs) and planetary mass objects (Planemos) requires model atmospheres that can treat line, molecule, and dust-cloud formation with completeness and accuracy. One of the essential problems is the determination of the surface velocity field throughout the main sequence down to the BD and planemo mass regimes. We present local 2D and 3D radiation hydrodynamic simulations using the CO5BOLD code with binned Phoenix gas opacities, forsterite dust formation (and opacities) and rotation. The resulting velocity field vs depth and Teff has been used in the general purpose model atmosphere code Phoenix, adapted in static 1D spherical symmetry for these cool atmospheres. The result is a better understanding of the spectral transition from the stellar to substellar regimes. However, problems remain in reproducing the colors of the dustiest brown dwarfs. The global properties of rotation can change the averaged spectral properties of these objects. Our project for the period 2011-2015 is therefore to develop scaled down global 3D simulations of convection, cloud formation and rotation thanks to funding by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche in France.

We report the discovery of a very cool, isolated brown dwarf, UGPS 0722-05, with the UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey. The near-infrared spectrum displays deeper H2O and CH4 troughs than the coolest known T dwarfs and an unidentified absorption feature at 1.275 um. We provisionally classify the object as a T10 dwarf but note that it may in future come to be regarded as the first example of a new spectral type. The distance is measured by trigonometric parallax as d=4.1{-0.5}{+0.6} pc, making it the closest known isolated brown dwarf. With the aid of Spitzer/IRAC we measure H-[4.5] = 4.71. It is the coolest brown dwarf presently known -- the only known T dwarf that is redder in H-[4.5] is the peculiar T7.5 dwarf SDSS J1416+13B, which is thought to be warmer and more luminous than UGPS 0722-05. Our measurement of the luminosity, aided by Gemini/T-ReCS N band photometry, is L = 9.2 +/- 3.1x10^{-7} Lsun. Using a comparison with well studied T8.5 and T9 dwarfs we deduce Teff=520 +/- 40 K. This is supported by predictions of the Saumon & Marley models. With apparent magnitude J=16.52, UGPS 0722-05 is the brightest T dwarf discovered by UKIDSS so far. It offers opportunities for future study via high resolution near-infrared spectroscopy and spectroscopy in the thermal infrared.

ESA's Gaia mission will collect low resolution spectroscopy in the optical range for ∼10 9 objects. Com- plete and up-to-date libraries of synthetic stellar spectra are needed to built algorithms aimed to automatically derive the classification and the parametrization of this huge amount of data. In addition, libraries of stellar spectra are one of the main ingredients of stellar population synthesis mod- els, aiming to derive the properties of unresolved stellar populations from their integrated light. We present (a) the newly computed libraries of synthetic spectra built by the Gaia community, covering the whole optical range (300- 1100 nm) at medium-high resolution of (0.3 nm) for stars spanning the most different types, from M to O, from A- peculiar to Emission lines to White Dwarfs, and (b) the im- plementation of those libraries in our SSP code (Tantalo in The Initial Mass Function 50 Years Later, 327:235 2005), exploring different stellar evolution models.

Recently the Spitzer Space Telescope observed the transiting extrasolar planets, TrES-1 and HD209458b. These observations have provided the first estimates of the day side thermal flux from two extrasolar planets orbiting Sun-like stars. In this paper, synthetic spectra from atmospheric models are compared to these observations. The day-night temperature difference is explored and phase-dependent flux densities are predicted for both planets. For HD209458b and TrES-1, models with significant day-to-night energy redistribution are required to reproduce the observations. (abridged) We present an analysis of high resolution optical spectra for a sample of very young, mid- to late M, low-mass stellar and substellar objects in Upper Sco and Taurus. Effective temperatures (T_eff) and surface gravities are derived from a multi-feature spectral analysis using TiO, NaI and KI, through comparison with the latest synthetic spectra. In combination, they allow us to determine T_eff to within 50K and gravity to within 0.25 dex. Our high-resolution analysis does not require extinction estimates. Moroever, it yields T_eff and gravities independent of theoretical evolutionary models. We find that our gravities for most of the sample agree remarkably well with the isochrone predictions for the likely cluster ages. However, discrepancies appear in our coolest targets: these appear to have significantly lower gravity (by up to 0.75 dex) than our hotter objects, even though our entire sample covers a relatively narrow range in T_eff (about 300K). This drop in gravity is also implied by inter-comparisons of the data alone, without recourse to synthetic spectra. We consider, and argue against, dust opacity, cool stellar spots or metallicity differences leading to the observed spectral effects; a real decline in gravity is strongly indicated. Such gravity variations are contrary to the predictions of the evolutionary tracks, causing improbably low ages to be inferred from the tracks for our coolest targets. We venture that these results may arise from evolutionary model uncertainties related to accretion, deuterium-burning and/or convection effects. Finally, when combined with photometry and distances, our technique for deriving gravities and temperatures provides a way of obtaining masses and radii for substellar objects independent of evolutionary models, as presented in Paper II., 74 pages, incl. 11 figures, accepted ApJ

Brown dwarfs have masses intermediate to stars and planets, but their atmospheres can span planetary plasma conditions as they cool over time. They are more directly observable than the currently known extra-solar planets. In this paper, we provide a brief summary of the atmospheric properties of brown dwarfs, and apply this knowledge to predict the thermal and spectral properties of extra-solar planets.

We present HST/WFPC2 observations of a sample of 134 ultra-cool objects (spectral types later than M7) coming from the DENIS, 2MASS and SDSS surveys, with distances estimated to range from 7 pc to 105 pc. Fifteen new ultra-cool binary candidates are reported here. Eleven known binaries are confirmed and orbital motion is detected in some of them. We estimate that the closest binary systems in this sample have periods between 5 and 20 years, and thus dynamical masses will be derived in the near future. For the calculation of binary frequency we restrict ourselves to systems with distances less than 20 pc. After correction of the binaries bias, we find a ratio of visual binaries (at the HST limit of detection) of around 10%, and that ~15% of the 26 objects within 20 parsecs are binary systems with separations between 1 and 8 A.U. The observed frequency of ultra-cool binaries is similar than that of binaries with G-type primaries in the separation range from 2.1 A.U. to 140 A.U. There is also a clear deficit of ultra-cool binaries with separations greater than 15 A.U., and a possible tendency for the binaries to have mass ratios near unity. Most systems have indeed visual and near-infrared brightness ratios between 1 and 0.3. We discuss our results in the framework of current scenarios for the formation and evolution of free-floating brown dwarfs.

We review the results of HST/WFPC2 observations of a sample of 50 very-low-mass objects in the solar neighborhood (30 from our own program and 20 from the archive). Using high spatial resolution HST/WFPC2 images, we observed these objects in two filters (F814W and F675W) in order to identify close companions, measure their colours, and obtain first epoch data of the newly discovered binaries. In addition to 3 previously known binaries we discovered 3 new multiple systems. Second epoch data are required to confirm that they are real common proper motion pairs. Binary properties like multiplicity, distribution of binary separations and brightness ratios hold clues on the origin and evolution of free-floating brown dwarf binaries.

We analyse evolutionary tracks at young ages for low mass stars with masses m ≤ 1.4 M⊙ and brown dwarfs down to one mass of Jupiter. We analyse current theoretical uncertainties due to initial conditions. Simple tests on initial conditions show the high uncertainties of models at ages ≲ 1 Myr.

Brown dwarf atmospheres form molecules, then high temperature condensates (corundum, titanates, silicates, and iron compounds), and then low temperature condensates (ices) as they cool down over time. These produce large opacities which govern entirely their spectral energy distribution. Just as it is important to know molecular opacities (TiO, H2O, CH4, etc.) with accuracy, it is imperative to understand the interplay of processes (e.g. condensation, sedimentation, coagulation, convection) that determines the radial and size distribution of grains. Limiting case models have shown that young, hot brown (L) dwarfs form dust mostly in equilibrium, while at much cooler stages (late T dwarfs) all high temperature condensates have sedimented out of their photospheres. But this process is gradual and all intermediate classes of brown dwarfs can partly be understood in terms of partial sedimentation of dust. With new models accounting for these processes, we describe the effects they may have upon brown dwarf spectral properties.

The recent announcement that sodium absorption has been observed in the atmosphere of HD209458b, the only EGP observed to transit its parent star, is the first direct detection of an EGP atmosphere. We explore the possibility that neutral sodium is {\em not} in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) in the outer atmosphere of irradiated EGPs and that the sodium concentration may be underestimated by models that make the LTE assumption. Our results indicate that it may not be necessary to invoke excessive photoionization, low metallicity, or even high altitude clouds to explain the observations.

We present broad band spectra of a sample of 21 low luminosity sources in the Trapezium Cluster, with masses in the range 0.008 - 0.10 Msun (assuming an age of 1 Myr). These were selected for low extinction in most cases and are located west of the brighter nebulosity. The spectra are in the H bandpass (1.4-1.95 um) and K bandpass (1.9-2.5 um) also for most of the brighter sources, with a resolution of 50 nm. They were taken with UKIRT using the CGS4 spectrometer. Absorption by water vapour bands is detected in all the substellar candidates except one, which is a highly reddened object with strong H2 emission and an anomalously blue (I-J) colour, implying that it is a very young cluster member with circumstellar matter. The observation of prominent water vapour bands confirms the low Effective Temperatures implied by our (I-J) colour measurements in an earlier paper and would imply late M or L spectral types if these were older field dwarfs. However, the profiles of the H bandpass spectra are very different from those of field dwarfs with similar water absorption strength, demonstrating that they are not foreground or background objects. In addition, the CO absorption bands at 2.3 um and the NaI absorption feature at 2.21 um are very weak for such cool sources. All these features are quite well reproduced by the AMES-Dusty-1999 model atmospheres of Allard et al.(2000,2001), and arise from the low gravities predicted for the Trapezium sources. This represents a new proof of the substellar status of our sources, independent of the statistical arguments for low contamination, which are reexamined here. The very late spectral types of the planetary mass objects and very low mass brown dwarfs demonstrate that they are cluster members, since they are too luminous to be field dwarfs in the background., Replacement - caption to Figure 15 corrected (surface gravities). Model atmospheres for cool giant stars are usually computed with detailed equation of state and opacity calculations that include many molecular species. We show that models of oxygen-rich stars with effective temperatures below 3000 K must also include dust grains. The effects of dust condensation in the equation of state and on the opacity must be included to obtain accurate temperature structures and spectra.

We have modeled irradiated planets located near a dM5 and a G2 primary star. The impinging radiation field was explicitly included in the solution of the radiative transfer equation and in the computation of the atmospheric structure. We find that large errors in both the thermal and reflected flux will result from models which do not include the impinging radiation in a self-consistent manner. A cool (teff = 500K) and a hot (teff = 1000K) planet were modeled at various orbital separations from both the dM5 and the G2 primary. In all scenarios, we compared the effects of the irradiation in two extreme cases: one where dust clouds form and remain suspended in the atmosphere, and another where dust clouds form but completely settle out of the atmosphere. The atmospheric structure and emergent spectrum strongly depend on the presence or absence of dust clouds. We find that, in the absence of dust opacity, the impinging radiation significantly alters the innermost layers of an EGP atmosphere and that they are actually brighter in the optical than dusty planets. Our models also indicate that the planet-to-star brightness ratio in the optical will be less that 1 x 10^-5 for objects like tau bootis which is consistent with recently reported upper limit values., 19 pages, 15 figures

We present analyses of high resolution and medium resolution spectra of early L dwarfs. We used our latest set of model atmospheres to reproduce and analyze the observed features. We can model the optical flux and the atomic line profiles with the best accuracy to date. The models used to reproduce the observations include dust condensation and dust opacities. Compared to previous studies using older models we find that our dust treatment is much improved. The derived parameters for the objects are well in the expected range for old very low mass objects. This is also supported by the absence of Li in most of the objects. For the objects showing Li we can be almost certain that those are brown dwarfs. We present evolutionary models for low mass stars and brown dwarfs ($m \le 1.2 \msol$) based on recent improvement of the theory: equation of state, atmosphere models, ... We concentrate on early evolutionary phases from the initial deuterium burning phase to the zero-age Main Sequence. Evolutionary models for young brown dwarfs are also presented. We discuss the uncertainties of the present models. We present the extension of our NextGen model atmosphere grid to the regime of giant stars. The input physics of the models presented here is nearly identical to the NextGen dwarf atmosphere models, however spherical geometry is used self-consistently in the model calculations (including the radiative transfer). Long thought by some researchers to be an oddity, GD 165B has instead proven to be the first example of a class of very cool objects (the L dwarfs) which, due to dust formation in their photosphere, lack the dominant bands of TiO seen in warmer M dwarfs.

We present our NextGen Model Atmosphere grid for low mass stars for effective temperatures larger than $3000\K$. These LTE models are calculated with the same basic model assumptions and input physics as the VLMS part of the NextGen grid so that the complete grid can be used, e.g., for consistent stellar evolution calculations and for internally consistent analysis of cool star spectra. This grid is also the starting point for a large grid of detailed NLTE model atmospheres for dwarfs and giants (Hauschildt et al, in preparation). The models were calculated from $3000\K$ to $10000\K$ (in steps of $200\K$) for $3.5 \le \logg \le 5.5$ (in steps of 0.5) and metallicities of $-4.0 \le \mh \le 0.0$. We discuss the results of the model calculations and compare our results to the Kurucz 1994 grid. Some comparisons to standard stars like Vega and the Sun are presented and compared with detailed NLTE calculations.

We have completed a grid of spherically symmetric AGB star atmospheres using the state of the art spectral synthesis code PHOENIX. Models are constructed for stars with masses of 1 M⊙and 1.5 M⊙, spanning the range 10 to 3300 L⊙in luminosity and 2500 to 5200 K in effective temperature. We find that grains of Al2O3and CaTiO3among other species form in atmospheres cooler than Teff= 3000 K. In the coolest models the grains cause a weakening of the TiO absorption features in the red and near infrared of up to 30% through both a depression of the continuum and a depletion of the TiO number abundance. We use spectrophotometric observations from a number of catalogs to determine effective temperature – spectral class and effective temperature – color relationships. We also compare synthetic colors calculated from our models with observations of M giants on Wing's 8-color narrow-band system of classification photometry.

We present near-infrared (1.85-2.47 μm) and optical (4300-5800 A) spectroscopic observations of the polar ST Leonis Minoris (ST LMi) in an extreme low state. The near-infrared spectrum, showing no emission lines whatsoever, is produced solely by the secondary star. We have fitted the spectrum with a series of stellar atmosphere models and found the secondary star to have a temperature of 2800±200 K. Six months later, ST LMi was reobserved in the near-infrared, at which time mass transfer had resumed, and the system was in a high state.

We present phase-resolved near-infrared broadband photometry of four short-period cataclysmic variables (HU Aqr, WZ Sge, TY Psc, and V592 Cas). Coupled with ultraviolet and optical data obtained from the literature, we have modeled the spectral energy distributions of these four cataclysmic variables, as well as that of the twin of WZ Sge, AL Com. The secondary stars contribute no more than 20%-50% of the near-infrared flux except for the polar HU Aqr, where the secondary contributes ~75% of the near-infrared flux. For the systems located above the orbital period minimum, the temperatures of the secondary stars match those for the expected main-sequence secondary stars. However, our modeling places WZ Sge below the orbital period minimum and shows it containing a secondary star of less than 1700 K—the coldest "star" yet identified.

A 20'' × 20'' field located ~7' from the center of the massive galactic globular cluster ω Centauri (NGC 5139) was observed by the NIC2 camera of the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) through the F110W and F160W broadband filters centered at 1.1 and 1.6 μm for a total of 3000 and 4000 s for the two filters, respectively. Standard photometric analysis of the resulting images yields 340 stars with a signal above a 10 σ threshold in both filters, covering the range of HST m160 magnitudes between 20 and 26, the deepest probe yet of a globular cluster in this wavelength region. These objects form a well-defined sequence in the m160 versus m110-m160 plane that is consistent with the theoretical near-IR color-magnitude diagram expected from recent low-mass stellar model calculations. The resulting stellar luminosity function increases steadily with increasing magnitude up to a peak at m16025, where it turns over and drops slowly down to the detection limit set by the incompleteness limit of 60% at m16026. With the theoretical mass-luminosity relationship that provides the best fit to the IR color-magnitude diagram, we obtain an excellent fit to the observed luminosity function down to a mass of ~0.2 M with a power-law mass function having a slope of α=-1.

We present detailed NLTE Ti I calculations in model atmospheres of cool dwarf and giant stars. A fully self-consistent NLTE treatment for a Ti I model atom with 395 levels and 5279 primary bound-bound transitions is included, and we discuss the implication of departures from LTE in this atom for the strengths of Ti I lines and TiO molecular bands in cool star spectra. We show that in the atmospheric parameter range investigated, LTE is a poor approximation to Ti I line formation, as expected from the low collisional rates in cool stars. The secondary effects of Ti I overionization on the TiO number density and the TiO molecular opacities, however, are found to be negligible in the molecular line-forming region for the relatively small parameter range studied in this paper.

▪ Abstract As progressively cooler stellar and substellar objects are discovered, the presence first of molecules and then of condensed particulates greatly complicates the understanding of their physical properties. Accurate model atmospheres that include these processes are the key to establishing their atmospheric parameters. They play a crucial role in determining structural characteristics by setting the surface conditions of model interiors and providing transformations to the various observational planes. They can reveal the spectroscopic properties of brown dwarfs and help establish their detectability. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art theory and modeling of the atmospheres of very low mass stars, including the coolest known M dwarfs, M subdwarfs, and brown dwarfs, i.e. Teff≤ 4,000 K and −4.0 ≤ [M/H] ≤ +0.0. We discuss ongoing efforts to incorporate molecular and grain opacities in cool stellar spectra, as well as the latest progress in (a) deriving the effective temperature scale of M dwarfs, (b) reproducing the lower main sequences of metal-poor subdwarfs in the halo and globular clusters, and (c) results of the models related to the search for brown dwarfs.

We present preliminary nongray model atmospheres and interiors for cool brown dwarfs. The resulting synthetic spectra are compared to available spectroscopic and photometric observations of the coolest brown dwarf yet discovered, Gl 229B (Nakajima et al.). Despite the grainless nature of the present models, we find that the resulting synthetic spectra provide an excellent fit to most of the spectral features of the brown dwarf. We confirm the presence of methane absorption and the substellar nature of Gl 229B. These preliminary models set an upper limit for the effective temperature of 1000 K. We also compute the evolution of brown dwarfs with solar composition and masses from 0.02 to 0.065 M☉. While uncertainties in the age of the system yield some indeterminateness for the mass of Gl 229B, the most likely solution is m ≈ 0.04-0.055 M☉. In any case, we can set an upper limit m = 0.065 M☉ for a very unlikely age, t = 10 Gyr.

Observed spectra of brown dwarfs demonstrate that their atmospheres are influenced by dust. To investigate the mechanism that controls the formation and gravitational settling of dust grains as well as the mixing of fresh condensable material into the atmosphere, we performed 2D radiation‐hydrodynamics simulations with CO5BOLD. The models comprise the upper part of the convection zone and the atmosphere with the dust cloud layers. We find that direct convective overshoot does not play a major role. Instead, the mixing in the clouds is controlled by gravity waves.

While there has been great progress over the last decade in studying the bulk spectrophotometric properties of low-mass objects, direct determination of their masses, radii, and temperatures have been very sparse. Thus, theoretical predictions of low-mass evolution and ultracool atmospheres remain to be rigorously tested. The situation is alarming given that such models are widely used, from the determination of the low-mass end of the initial mass function to the characterization of exoplanets.An increasing number of mass, radius, and age determinations are placing critical constraints on the physics of low-mass objects. A wide variety of approaches are being pursued, including eclipsing binary studies, astrometric-spectroscopic orbital solutions, interferometry, and characterization of benchmark systems. In parallel, many more systems suitable for concerted study are now being found, thanks to new capabilities spanning both the very widest (all-sky surveys) and very narrowest (diffraction-limited adaptive optics) areas of the sky. The discovery of Epsilon Indi Ba and Bb, a nearby binary brown dwarf system with a main-sequence companion, allows a concerted campaign to characterise the physical parameters of two T dwarfs providing benchmarks against which atmospheric and evolutionary models can be tested. Some recent observations suggest the models at low mass and intermediate age may not reflect reality with, however, few conclusive tests. We are carrying out a comprehensive characterisation of these, the nearest known brown dwarfs, to allow constraints to be placed upon models of cool field dwarfs. We present broadband photometry from the V- to M-band and the individual spectrum of both components from 0.6-5.1 microns at a resolution of up to R=5000. A custom analytic profile fitting routine was implemented to extract the blended spectra and photometry of both components separated by 0.7 arcsec. We confirm the spectral types to be T1 and T6, and notably, we do not detect lithium at 6708A in the more massive object which may be indicative both of the age of the system and the mass of the components., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of Cool Stars 15

International audience; The first space-borne instruments able to detect and characterize extrasolar terrestrial planets, Darwin (ESA) and TPF-C (Terrestrial Planet Finder-Coronograph, NASA), should be launched at the end of the next decade. Beyond the challenge of planet detection itself, the ability to measure mid-infrared (Darwin) and visible (TPF-C) spectra at low resolution will allow us to characterize the exoplanets discovered. The spectral analysis of these planets will extend the field of planetary science beyond the Solar System to the nearby Universe: It will give access to certain planetary properties (albedo, brightness temperature, radius) and reveal the presence of atmospheric compounds, which, together with the radiative budget of the planet, will provide the keys to understanding how the climate system works on these worlds. If terrestrial planets are sufficiently abundant, these missions will collect data for numerous planetary systems of different ages and orbiting different types of stars. Theories for the formation, evolution and habitability of the terrestrial planets will at last face the test observation. The most fascinating perspective offered by these space observatories is the ability to detect spectral signatures indicating biological activity. In this chapter, we review and discuss the concept of extrasolar biosignatures or biomarkers. We focus mainly on the identification of oxygen-rich atmospheres through the detection of O2 and O3 features, addressing also the case of other possible biomarkers and indicators of habitability.

Ultracool stellar atmospheres show absorption by alkali resonance lines severely broadened by collisions with neutral perturbers. In the coolest and densest atmospheres, such as those of T dwarfs, Na I and K I broadened by molecular hydrogen and helium can come to dominate the entire optical spectrum. Their profiles have been successfully modelled with accurate interaction potentials in the adiabatic theory, computing line profiles from the first few orders of a density expansion of the autocorrelation function. The line shapes in the emergent spectrum also depend on the distribution of absorbers as a function of depth, which can be modelled with improved accuracy by new models of dust condensation and settling. The far red K I wings of the latest T dwarfs still show missing opacity in these models, a phenomenon similar to what has been found for the Na I line profiles observed in extremely cool, metal-rich white dwarfs. We show that the line profile in both cases is strongly determined by multiple-perturber interactions at short distances and can no longer be reproduced by a density expansion, but requires calculation of the full profile in a unified theory. Using general stellar atmosphere code PHOENIX, the influence of chemi‐ionization and inverse chemi‐recombination processes, in H*(n)+H(1s) collisions, on the population of higher levels and consequently on profiles of Hydrogen lines in the atmospheres of late type (M) stars was studied. Obtained results are the first demonstration of the possibility to confirm the considered processes influence by direct observations of stellar spectra. It is demonstrated that it is very important to include chemi‐ionization and chemi‐recombination processes in modeling of atmospheres of late type stars, especially if one wants to use line profiles for diagnostics of stellar photospheres and lower chromospheres.

We present current models for low mass stars and substellar objects down to planetary masses and discuss the success and remaining uncertainties of the theory. We focus on early evolutionary phases during the first ~ 10 Myr, covering for stars the initial deuterium burning phase to the zero-age Main Sequence. Uncertainties of models at young ages due to the choice of initial conditions are emphasized.

A full understanding of the properties of substellar objects is one of the major challenges facing astrophysics. Since their discovery in 1995, we have discovered hundreds of brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets. While these discoveries have enabled important comparisons with theory, observational progress has been much more rapid than the theoretical understanding of cool atmospheres. The determination of mass, abundances, gravities and temperatures is not yet possible. The key problem is that substellar objects emit their observable radiation in the infrared region of the spectrum where our knowledge of atomic, molecular and line broadening data is poor. In order to understand these objects, and extra-solar planets increasing more like those our Solar System, we urge the wider physical chemistry community to engage in this exciting new field. Here we sketch an outline of the atoms, molecules and processes requiring study.

Brown dwarfs bridge the gap between the stellar and planetary mass regimes. Evolving from conditions very similar to the lowest-mass stars, the atmospheres of older brown dwarfs closely resemble those expected in close-in extrasolar giant planets, and with cooler BDs still being discovered, more and more approach the properties of gas giants at wider separation. Interpreting the spectra of BDs is therefore a crucial step towards understanding and predicting the spectral and thermal properties of EGPs. Essential properties of substellar atmospheres are massive molecular line-blanketing and the condensation of species with decreasing Teff, changing the chemical equilibrium composition and causing absorption from dust grains. More complex details involve the distribution of dust clouds over the surface giving rise to temporal variability, and possible deviations from chemical equilibrium conditions. In the case of close-in EGPs and some BDs in binary systems, the effect of irradiation from the primary significantly affects the spectral properties and thermal evolution.

Since 1995, there have been great advances and extremely exciting results in the search for brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. In the formation of their spectra, the far wings of the alkali resonance lines, especially Na I and K I, play an extraordinary role. Model atmospheres are necessary in order to calculate synthetic spectra and colors and to derive reliable parameters and the atmospheric chemical composition for such objects. Using alkali resonance line profiles [1] and [2], the differences in the synthetic spectra compared to earlier results [3], [4] will be outlined. Besides the line formation process dependent on the effective temperature and the chemistry in the atmosphere will be discussed. For the synthetic spectra, the general purpose stellar atmosphere code PHOENIX [5] is used.

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, who followed the agenda that had been sent to the membership prior to the meeting. The membership of the Commission stands at approximately 220 members, excluding the new members who will join the commission at the end of this General Assembly.

The business meeting of IAU Commission 36 took place during the GA in Beijing on August 27th, and its major topic was the re-structuring of the IAU Divisions and consequences for our Commission. The meeting was conducted by the new president, Joachim Puls, since the past president (still in charge during the GA), Martin Asplund, could not participate.

Model atmospheres have been computed for M dwarfs that are strongly irradiated by nearby hot companions. A variety of primary and secondary spectral types are explored in addition to models specific to four known systems: GD 245, NN Ser, AA Dor, and UU Sge. This work demonstrates that a dramatic temperature inversion is possible on at least one hemisphere of an irradiated M dwarf and the emergent spectrum will be significantly different from an isolated M dwarf or a black body flux distribution. For the first time, synthetic spectra suitable for direct comparison to high-resolution observations of irradiated M dwarfs in non-mass transferring post-common envelope binaries are presented. We analyse high-resolution optical spectra of a sample of low-mass, very young, mid-to late M stellar and substellar objects in Upper Scorpius and Taurus. Precise effective temperatures (± 50K) and surface gravities (± 0.25 dex) are derived from amulti-feature spectral analysis using TiO, NaI and KI, through comparison with the latest synthetic spectra. Our high-resolution analysis is independent of extinction estimates. Combining our Teff and gravities with distance and photometry information then allows us to derive extinctions, masses, radii and luminosities. We emphasize that our analysis is independent of theoretical evolutionary models. As such, it offers a new way of deriving fundamental parameters for low-mass stellar and substellar objects, and of testing the model evolutionary tracks. We find discrepancies between our results and the theoretical tracks for the coolest, lowest mass targets. Our gravities for these objects are significantly (∼ 0.75 dex) lower than for hotter ones. This is at odds with the predictions of the evolutionary models, and causes improbably low ages to be derived from the theoretical tracks for the coolest objects. Similarly, our radii and luminosities for the coolest, lowest mass objects are much larger than predicted by the evolutionary models. These results lead us to suggest that significant improvements in the evolutionary models may be necessary for very cool, ultra-low mass objects, perhaps in the treatment of convection and/or initial conditions. We also find two of our coolest targets to be planetary mass objects (“planemos”), with mass ∼ 7 MJ. Thus, some late-M PMS objects may be much less massive than current evolutionary models indicate. Equivalently, young planemos may be more luminous than expected. Combined with the detection of planemos by other groups, our results imply that such objects may not be too rare.
