Abstract: Abstract Water isotopes are tracers of convective processes and are often used as proxies for past precipitation. These applications require a better understanding of the impact of convective processes on the isotopic composition of water vapor and precipitation. One way to advance this understanding is to analyze the isotopic mesoscale variations during organized convective systems such as tropical cyclones or squall lines. The goal of this study is to understand these isotopic mesoscale variations with particular attention to isotopic signals in near‐surface vapor and precipitation that may be present in observations and in paleoclimate proxies. With this aim, we run cloud resolving model simulations in radiative‐convective equilibrium in which rotation or wind shear is added, allowing us to simulate tropical cyclones or squall lines. The simulations capture the robust aspects of mesoscale isotopic variations in observed tropical cyclones and squall lines. We interpret these variations using a simple water budget model for the sub‐cloud layer of different parts of the domain. We find that rain evaporation and rain‐vapor diffusive exchanges are the main drivers of isotopic depletion within tropical cyclones and squall lines. Horizontal advection spreads isotopic anomalies, thus reshaping the mesoscale isotopic pattern. This study contributes to our understanding of mesoscale isotopic variability and provides physical arguments supporting the interpretation of paleoclimate isotopic archives in tropical regions in terms of past cyclonic activity.

Abstract: International audience; Geothermal exploration can be challenging in the absence of obvious surface indicators of a high enthalpy geothermal resource such as geysers, fumaroles or thermal springs with temperatures near 100 °C. This is the case at the Piton des Neiges volcano (Réunion Island), which displays evidence of hydrothermal activity mostly as thermal springs with temperatures not exceeding 50 °C, affected by mixing and reequilibration, and emerging in a complex geological framework, resulting from the polygenic history of this dormant volcano. Yet, these thermal springs keep a partial record of the reservoir geochemistry. Here, we propose an exploration method to set this thermal signature apart from the contribution of other processes and trace back the equilibrium conditions, enabling us to locate thermal fluid circulations, and evaluate their temperature and availability. We report its application at Piton des Neiges volcano. We led an extensive geochemical survey which nearly doubled the number of thermal springs reported on the volcano and dramatically extended the existing geochemical database in space and time. In tandem, we also monitored δ18O and δD values in rainwaters and thermal springs over two years to compare their temporal variations.Our surveys show that the repartition of thermal springs is controlled by only one of the volcanic rift zones (the N30°E axis), which is thus identified as the heat source of hydrothermal circulations. This N30°E rift zone is also a preferential pathway for the degassing of mantellic CO2. In addition, the composition of thermal waters is influenced by syenite intrusions along the rim of the caldera, acting as drains for the uprise of hydrothermal waters. O, H and Sr isotopic signatures of springs show that the geothermal resource of Piton des Neiges is in fact made of two independent and unconnected hydrothermal systems on the northern and southern circular depressions of the volcano (the cirques of Salazie and Cilaos, respectively). Their recharge is meteoric, multi-year, and mostly achieved by cyclonic events. Thermal waters experience reequilibration during their ascent and various degrees of CO2 input or degassing. Last equilibrium temperatures of water/rock interaction, estimated by multicomponent geothermometry, reach up to 125 ± 6 °C in the cirque of Salazie, and up to 141 ± 15 °C in the cirque of Cilaos, with possibility for hotter waters before reequilibration. Taken together, our results suggest that the most promising target for future exploration is located in the cirque of Cilaos, along the caldera rim, and in proximity of syenite intrusions.With a thorough prospecting of thermal springs, a comprehensive geochemical study and a geochemical monitoring of the different water reservoirs, we improved our understanding of the geothermal resource and identified future exploration targets at Piton des Neiges volcano.A separation scheme for strontium and light rare earth elements and its application to the isotopic analysis of strontium and neodymium in silicate rocks are presented. This method benefits from the selectivity and high capacity of two newly introduced extraction Chromatographic materials, referred to as Sr.Spec and TRU.Spec, respectively. These afford a straightforward separation of Sr and Sm + Nd with high yield, good purity and satisfactory blank levels, on very small (0.25 ml) columns using small volumes of solutions of a single mineral acid, HNO3. The validity of the method is illustrated by the measurement of 87Sr/ 86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios in twelve international standard reference materials.

Abstract: International audience; The isotopic equilibrium state between precipitation and low-level water vapor is a common assumption in numerous paleoclimate and atmospheric studies based on water stable isotopes. However, the paucity of field observations limits the validation of this assumption. This study examines the isotopic equilibrium state from event-based precipitation and daily near-surface water vapor samples collected during the onset and the termination of the 2005–2006 wet season in the Bolivian Andes (Zongo valley, 16°09′S, 68°07′W). Our observations show that the observed isotopic composition of precipitation (δDp) deviates from the theoretical isotopic composition of precipitation at equilibrium with water vapor (δDp_eq). Disequilibriums (ΔDp_eq = δDp - δDp_eq) are mostly negative (73%), indicating that precipitation is more depleted than a condensate that would have been formed from surface water vapor, and half of them are between −10 and + 10‰. They are significantly correlated to δDp (r2 = 0.30, n = 70, p < 0.001) suggesting that controls on δDp also impact ΔDp_eq. Although equilibrium state does not prevail at the individual rain event scale, a strong relationship is observed between δDp and δDp_eq over the whole period of field samplings (r2 = 0.86, n = 70, p < 0.001). The review of possible causes to explain the disequilibriums shows that below-cloud rain evaporation and diffusive exchanges are little involved. Other local processes such as rain type, condensation conditions and surface water recycling appear as better candidates to explain ΔDp_eq. Lastly, we explore how local processes affect δDp. We show that large-scale dynamic along air masses history is dominant (nearly 80%) to explain δDp whereas local effects are dominant to explain deuterium excess in precipitation. In consequence, we conclude that δDp is a correct candidate to examine and to reconstruct large-scale atmospheric processes from past to present time scales.

Abstract: Succession of cold glacials and warm interglacials during the Quaternary results from large global climate responses to variable orbital configurations, accompanied by fluctuating greenhouse gas concentrations. Despite the influences of sea ice and atmospheric and ocean circulations in the Southern Ocean on atmospheric CO2 concentrations and climate, past changes in this region remain poorly documented. Here, we present the 800 ka deuterium excess record from the East Antarctica EPICA Dome C ice core, tracking sea surface temperature in evaporative regions of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean from which moisture precipitated in East Antarctica is derived. We find that low obliquity leads to surface warming in evaporative moisture source regions during each glacial inception, although this relative temperature increase is counterbalanced by global cooling during glacial maxima. Links between the two regions during interglacials depends on the existence of a temperature maximum at the interglacial onset. In its absence, temperature maxima in the evaporative moisture source regions and in East Antarctica were synchronous. For the other interglacials, temperature maxima in the source areas lag early local temperature maxima by several thousand years, probably because of a change in the position of the evaporative source areas. Interglacial temperature coupling between East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean was set by the position of moisture source regions, according to an 800,000-year-long deuterium-excess ice-core record from East Antarctica.

Abstract: This article presents for the first time a large dataset of rainfall isotopic measurements (d18Op and d2Hp) sampled every day or every two days from seven sites in a west-to-east transect across northern Spain for 2010–2017. The main aim of this study is to: (1) characterize rainfall isotopic variability in northern Spain at daily and monthly time scales, and (2) assess the principal influencing factors determining rainfall isotopic variability. This comprehensive spatio-temporal approach allows exploring the role of air mass source in determining the isotopic composition of rainfall in northern Iberia by using back-trajectories; Atlantic fronts are found to be the dominant source of northern Iberia rain events studied. The relative role of air temperature and rainfall amount in determining the stable isotope composition of precipitation changes along the west-to-east transect. Air temperature appears to be the most significant influence on d18Op at daily and monthly time scales with the highest air temperature-d18Op dependency found for the Pyrenean station while a few sites in the transect show a significant negative correlation with precipitation amount. Distance from the coast, site elevation, and moisture source region (Atlantic versus Mediterranean) also significantly modulate the d18Op values and ranges but the type of precipitation (convective vs frontal rainfall) plays a key control, with convective rainfall associated with higher d18Op values. This dataset of the rainfall isotopic composition represents another step forward towards developing a more detailed, mechanistic framework for interpreting stable isotopes in rainfall as a palaeoclimate and hydrological tracer.

13. Isotopic equilibrium between precipitation and water vapor in Northern Patagonia and its consequences on δ18Ocellulose estimate

Abstract: Modelling of the oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of tree-ring cellulose rely on the isotopic equilibrium assumption between the atmospheric water vapor and the tree source water, which is frequently assimilated to integrated precipitation. We explore the veracity of this assumption based on observations collected (δ18O of rain, rivers, leaves, tree-rings) or monitored (δ18O of water vapor) during a field campaign in Río Negro province, Argentina, in late summer 2017 (February-March). We examine, firstly, how the δ18O of water vapor deviate from the equilibrium with precipitation and, secondly, what is the impact of the isotopic equilibrium assumption on the calculation of the isotopic composition of tree-ring cellulose. For oxygen, the isotopic disequilibrium between rain and vapor range between -2.0 and 4.1‰. Rain drops re-evaporation during their fall, evaporation of soil water and vegetation transpiration (resulting in transpired water accounting for 14 to 29% of ambient water vapor) could produce this disequilibrium. The small value of the disequilibrium at the study site is likely due to the high level of relative humidity (from 70 to 96%) favoring the isotopic diffusive exchanges between the two water phases and thus promoting the isotopic equilibrium. A perfect agreement between observed and calculated isotopic composition of cellulose is obtained if the source water is assumed to be in isotopic equilibrium with the measured water vapor. This hypothetical source water has a significantly higher δ18O than the expected averaged isotopic composition of precipitation over the growing period or than the groundwater (river value). The veracity of the hypothesis of the isotopic equilibrium between water vapor and source water in tree-ring paleoclimate studies is discussed in light of these results.

Abstract: As many ocean basaltic volcanoes worldwide, Piton des Neiges (Reunion Island) hosts a hydrothermal system that represents a potential geothermal resource. Despite several prospection campaigns over the past decades, this potential has never been confirmed because many aspects of fluid supply and circulation remain unclear. To track the origin and fate of hydrothermal fluids, we analyzed the geochemistry of thermal springs (water and gas), by combining conventional tracers (major-trace elements and O, H, C, Sr, Li isotopes) with Cl isotopes, a geochemical tool under development. Added to literature data, our new results allow us to compare the composition of thermal springs with cold waters, rocks, gas, and fumarolic deposits from La Reunion and elsewhere, and to untwine the complex history of fluid mixing that constitutes the geothermal system of Piton des Neiges. delta O-18(H2O) and delta D-H2O values of springs (-8.67 to -4.9 and -56.3 to -23.5 parts per thousand VSMOW, respectively) are positioned close to the local meteoric water line, showing that thermal waters are of meteoric origin. However, their depletion in heavy isotopes relative to cold waters suggests a recharge strongly influenced by cyclones, with a possible contribution from high altitude (>= 2000m) rainfalls. Their absence of O-18 enrichment relative to the local meteoric water line indicates that the isotopic exchange between rocks and water is very limited, and therefore suggests that their deep temperatures are relatively low and/or the water/rock ratios are high. delta C-13 values in thermal waters (-8.0 to +3.2 parts per thousand PDB) and gases (-6.7 to -5.3 parts per thousand PDB) confirm that carbon is essentially of magmatic origin, which we interpret as supplied by regional degassing of La Reunion hotspot. Major-trace elements and Sr-87/Sr-86 (0.704142 to 0.704336), delta Li-7 (+2 parts per thousand and +34.8 parts per thousand LSVEC), and delta Cl-37(-0.35 parts per thousand and +0.40 parts per thousand SMOC) compositions show that three additional processes contribute to the mineralization of thermal waters: 1) interaction with basalt at temperatures >= 50 degrees C, 2) very limited seawater contamination (< 3 mol parts per thousand), and/or 3) leaching of trachyte or scrubbing of fumarolic gas or condensates emitted by a shallow trachytic magma in the volcanic edifice. The geothermal system of Piton des Neiges is thus the result of meteoric water interaction with a trachytic heat source (as a solidified intrusion or a magma pocket), unrelated to the CO2 flux. We also emphasize that thermal waters at Piton des Neiges are exceptionally isolated from seawater compared to other geothermal systems in ocean island volcanoes worldwide, which implies a heat source located above the seawater/freshwater interface. Abstract: We present a 1 year long record of the isotopic composition of near-surface water vapor (δ18Ov) at the Maido atmospheric observatory (Reunion Island, Indian Ocean, 22°S, 55°E) from 1 November 2014 to 31 October 2015, using wavelength-scanned cavity ring down spectroscopy. Except during cyclone periods where δ18Ov is highly depleted (−20.5‰), a significant diurnal variability can be seen on both δ18Ov and qv with enriched (depleted) water vapor (mean δ18Ov is −13.4‰ (−16.6‰)) and moist (dry) conditions (mean qv is 9.7 g/kg (6.4 g/kg)) during daytime (nighttime). We show that δ18Ov diurnal cycle arises from mixing processes for 65% of cases with two distinct sources of water vapor. We suggest that δ18Ov diurnal cycle is controlled by an interplay of thermally driven land-sea breezes and upslope-downslope flows, bringing maritime air to the observatory during daytime, whereas at night, the observatory is above the atmospheric boundary layer and samples free tropospheric air. Interestingly, δ18Ov record also shows that some nights (15%) are extremely depleted (mean δ18Ov is −21.4‰). They are among the driest of the record (mean qv is 2.9 g/kg). Based on different modeling studies, we suggest that extreme nocturnal isotopic depletions are caused by large-scale atmospheric transport and subsidence of dry air masses from the upper troposphere to the surface, induced by the subtropical westerly jet.

Abstract: This study was performed to examine the relationship between isotopic composition in near-surface vapor (δ18Ov) over western Africa during the monsoon season and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity using the Isotope-incorporated Global Spectral Model. The model was evaluated using a satellite and in situ observations at daily to interannual timescales. The model provided an accurate simulation of the spatial pattern and seasonal and interannual variations of isotopic composition in column and surface vapor and precipitation over western Africa. Encouraged by this result, we conducted a simulation stretching 34 years (1979–2012) to investigate the relationship between atmospheric environment and isotopic signature on an interannual timescale. The simulation indicated that the depletion in the monsoon season does not appear every year at Niamey. The major difference between the composite fields with and without depletion was in the amount of precipitation in the upstream area of Niamey. As the interannual variation of the precipitation amount is influenced by the ENSO, we regressed the monsoon season averaged δ18Ov from the model and annually averaged NINO3 index and found a statistically significant correlation (R = 0.56, P < 0.01) at Niamey. This relationship suggests that there is a possibility of reconstructing past western African monsoon activity and ENSO using climate proxies.

Abstract: Reconstruire les variations passées de notre climat permet de mieux appréhender le fonctionnement de notre système climatique. Les carottes de glace issues des calottes polaires et des glaciers montagneux de haute altitude sont de très bonnes archives climatiques. Les glaciers présents sur les sommets des Andes sud-américaines sont ainsi exploités depuis les années 80. Une dizaine de carottages ont été réalisés depuis l’équateur jusqu’en Patagonie. Ils recouvrent des périodes très différentes allant du dernier siècle, jusqu’à la dernière transition glaciaire-interglaciaire qui débute il y a 21 000 ans. La datation de ces carottes combine un ensemble de méthodes : comptage des cycles saisonniers des éléments chimiques et de la composition isotopique de la glace, analyse de la concentration des éléments radioactifs issus des tests atmosphériques nucléaires au xxe siècle et modélisation de l’écoulement du glacier pour la partie la plus profonde. Le présent article illustre deux résultats intéressants apportés par l’étude de la composition isotopique de ces glaces. Le premier concerne la période du Petit Âge Glaciaire au xviie-xviiie siècle. L’analyse isotopique de la glace de deux carottes prélevées en Bolivie (Illimani) et au Pérou (Quelccaya), couplée à l’étude de l’extension des glaciers au même moment, montre des conditions climatiques légèrement plus humides et plus froides de 1650 à 1780. Le second résultat est déduit de l’analyse isotopique d’une carotte prélevée en Patagonie du Nord (San Valentin) qui recouvre les 120 dernières années. L’enregistrement isotopique suggère que la température dans cette région a progressivement diminué au cours de cette période d’environ 0,2 °C par décennie, venant prolonger une tendance mesurée par les stations météorologiques chiliennes depuis les années 70 malgré un contexte de réchauffement global. The reconstruction of past climate variability offers important information about our climate system. Ice cores extracted from polar ice sheets or from mountainous glaciers are among the most popular climate archives. Ice cores from Andean glaciers in South America have been studied since the 1980’s. Almost ten ice cores have been extracted from the equator to Patagonia. They cover different time periods from the last century to the last glacial-interglacial termination that started 21,000 years ago. Those ice cores are usually dated by using a combination of methods: annual layers counting in both isotopic and chemical ice composition, radionuclides concentration analysis to detect atmospheric nuclear tests during the 20th century and ice flow modeling for the deepest part of those cores. This paper presents two interesting results arising from the isotopic composition of the ice. The first one deals with the isotopic records of Bolivian (Illimani) and Peruvian (Quelccaya) ice cores in regards to the reconstruction of glacier extent during the little ice age in the 17th-18th century. Both approaches suggest a slightly moister and cooler period from 1650 to 1780. The second result arises from the 120-year long isotopic record of an ice core drilled in Patagonia (San Valentin). It suggests that at the regional scale, temperature has regularly decreased of about 0.2 °C per decade, extending the temperature decrease shown by Chilean meteorological data since the 1970’s despite a global warming.

19. Deuterium excess in marine water vapor: Dependency on relative humidity and surface wind speed during evaporation

Abstract: We provide the first continuous measurements of isotopic composition (δD and δ18O) of water vapor over the subtropical Eastern North Atlantic Ocean from mid-August to mid-September 2012. The ship was located mostly around 26°N, 35°W where evaporation exceeded by far precipitation and water vapor at 20 m largely originated from surface evaporation. The only large deviations from that occurred during a 2 day period in the vicinity of a weak low-pressure system. The continuous measurements were used to investigate deuterium excess (d-excess) relation to evaporation. During 25 days d-excess was negatively correlated with relative humidity (r2 = 0.89). Moreover, d-excess estimated in an evaporative model with a closure assumption reproduced most of the observed variability. From these observations, the d-excess parameter seems to be a good indicator of evaporative conditions. We also conclude that in this region, d-excess into the marine boundary layer is less affected by mixing with the free troposphere than the isotopic composition. From our data, the transition from smooth to rough regime at the ocean surface is associated with a d-excess decrease of 5‰, which suggests the importance of the ocean surface roughness in controlling d-excess in this region.

20. Water isotopes as tools to document oceanic sources of precipitation

Abstract: The isotopic composition of precipitation, in deuterium, oxygen 18 and oxygen 17, depends on the climatic conditions prevailing in the oceanic regions where it originates, mainly the sea surface temperature and the relative humidity of air. This dependency applies to present-day precipitation but also to past records which are extracted, for example, from polar ice cores. In turn, coisotopic measurements of deuterium and oxygen 18 offer the possibility to retrieve information about the oceanic origin of modern precipitation as well as about past changes in sea surface temperature and relative humidity of air. This interpretation of isotopic measurements has largely relied on simple Rayleigh-type isotopic models and is complemented by Lagrangian back trajectory analysis of moisture sources. It is now complemented by isotopic General Circulation Models (IGCM) in which the origin of precipitation can be tagged. We shortly review published results documenting this link between the oceanic sources of precipitation and their isotopic composition. We then present experiments performed with two different IGCMs, the GISS model II and the LMDZ model. We focus our study on marine water vapor and its contribution to precipitation over Antarctica and over the Andean region of South America. We show how IGCM experiments allow us to relate climatic conditions prevailing in the oceanic source of precipitation to its isotopic composition. Such experiments support, at least qualitatively, the current interpretation of ice core isotopic data in terms of changes in sea surface temperature. Additionally, we discuss recent studies clearly showing the added value of oxygen 17 measurements. 21. Can we determine what controls the spatio-temporal distribution of d-excess and 17O-excess in precipitation using the LMDZ general circulation model?

Abstract: Combined measurements of the H218O and HDO isotopic ratios in precipitation, leading to second-order parameter D-excess, have provided additional constraints on past climates compared to the H218O isotopic ratio alone. More recently, measurements of H217O have led to another second-order parameter: 17O-excess. Recent studies suggest that 17O-excess in polar ice may provide information on evaporative conditions at the moisture source. However, the processes controlling the spatio-temporal distribution of 17O-excess are still far from being fully understood. We use the isotopic general circulation model (GCM) LMDZ to better understand what controls d-excess and 17O-excess in precipitation at present-day (PD) and during the last glacial maximum (LGM). The simulation of D-excess and 17O-excess is evaluated against measurements in meteoric water, water vapor and polar ice cores. A set of sensitivity tests and diagnostics are used to quantify the relative effects of evaporative conditions (sea surface temperature and relative humidity), Rayleigh distillation, mixing between vapors from different origins, precipitation re-evaporation and supersaturation during condensation at low temperature. In LMDZ, simulations suggest that in the tropics convective processes and rain re-evaporation are important controls on precipitation D-excess and 17O-excess. In higher latitudes, the effect of distillation, mixing between vapors from different origins and supersaturation are the most important controls. For example, the lower d-excess and 17O-excess at LGM simulated at LGM are mainly due to the supersaturation effect. The effect of supersaturation is however very sensitive to a parameter whose tuning would require more measurements and laboratory experiments. Evaporative conditions had previously been suggested to be key controlling factors of d-excess and 17O-excess, but LMDZ underestimates their role. More generally, some shortcomings in the simulation of 17O-excess by LMDZ suggest that general circulation models are not yet the perfect tool to quantify with confidence all processes controlling 17O-excess.

Abstract: International audience; Past climate is an important benchmark to assess the ability of climate models to simulate key processes and feedbacks. Numerous proxy records exist for stable isotopes of water and/or carbon, which are also implemented inside the components of a growing number of Earth system model.Model–data comparisons can help to constrain the uncertainties associated with transfer functions. This motivates the need of producing a comprehensive compilation of different proxy sources. We have put together a global database of proxy records of oxygen (δ18O), hydrogen (δD) and carbon (δ13C) stable isotopes from different archives: ocean and lake sediments, corals, ice cores, speleothems and tree-ring cellulose. Source records were obtained from the georeferenced open access PANGAEA and NOAA libraries, complemented by additional data obtained from a literature survey. About 3000 source records were screened for chronological information and temporal resolution of proxy records. Altogether, this database consists of hundreds of dated δ18O, δ13C and δD records in a standardized simple text format, complemented with a metadata Excel catalog. A quality control flag was implemented to describe age markers and inform on chronological uncertainty. This compilation effort highlights the need to homogenize and structure the format of datasets and chronological information as well as enhance the distribution of published datasets that are currently highly fragmented and scattered. We also provide an online portal based on the records included in this database with an intuitive and interactive platform (http://climateproxiesfinder.ipsl.fr/), allowing one to easily select, visualize and download subsets of the homogeneously formatted records that constitute this database, following a choice of search criteria, and to upload new datasets. In the last part, we illustrate the type of application allowed by our database by comparing several keyperiods highly investigated by the paleoclimate community. For coherency with the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP), we focus on records spanning the past 200 years, the mid-Holocene (MH, 5.5–6.5 ka; calendar kilo-years before 1950), the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 19–23 ka), and those spanning the last interglacial period (LIG,115–130 ka). Basic statistics have been applied to characterize anomalies between these different periods. Most changesfrom the MH to present day and from LIG to MH appear statistically insignificant. Abstract: Past climate is an important benchmark to assess the ability of climate models to simulate key processes and feedbacks. Numerous proxy records exist for stable isotopes of water and/or carbon, which are also implemented inside the components of a growing number of Earth system model. Model–data comparisons can help to constrain the uncertainties associated with transfer functions. This motivates the need of producing a comprehensive compilation of different proxy sources. We have put together a global database of proxy records of oxygen (δ18O), hydrogen (δD) and carbon (δ13C) stable isotopes from different archives: ocean and lake sediments, corals, ice cores, speleothems and tree-ring cellulose. Source records were obtained from the georeferenced open access PANGAEA and NOAA libraries, complemented by additional data obtained from a literature survey. About 3000 source records were screened for chronological information and temporal resolution of proxy records. Altogether, this database consists of hundreds of dated δ18O, δ13C and δD records in a standardized simple text format, complemented with a metadata Excel catalog. A quality control flag was implemented to describe age markers and inform on chronological uncertainty. This compilation effort highlights the need to homogenize and structure the format of datasets and chronological information as well as enhance the distribution of published datasets that are currently highly fragmented and scattered. We also provide an online portal based on the records included in this database with an intuitive and interactive platform (http://climateproxiesfinder.ipsl.fr/), allowing one to easily select, visualize and download subsets of the homogeneously formatted records that constitute this database, following a choice of search criteria, and to upload new datasets. In the last part, we illustrate the type of application allowed by our database by comparing several key periods highly investigated by the paleoclimate community. For coherency with the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP), we focus on records spanning the past 200 years, the mid-Holocene (MH, 5.5–6.5 ka; calendar kiloyears before 1950), the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 19–23 ka), and those spanning the last interglacial period (LIG, 115–130 ka). Basic statistics have been applied to characterize anomalies between these different periods. Most changes from the MH to present day and from LIG to MH appear statistically insignificant. Significant global differences are reported from LGM to MH with regional discrepancies in signals from different archives and complex patterns.

Abstract: International audience; Tree ring δ18O chronologies from two native species (Fitzroya cupressoides and Nothofagus pumilio) in northern Patagonia were developed to assess their potential for paleoclimate reconstructions. The five annually resolved cellulose δ18O chronologies (two for F. cupressoides and three for N. pumilio) are located on the Andes along the steep west-to-east precipitation gradient. Over the common 60 years long interval, the five site-δ18Ocell chronologies exhibit a strong common signal as indicated by the significant mean intercorrelation (r = 0.61, p \textless 0.05) and the high percentage (65%) of total variance explained by the first empirical orthogonal function. Although correlation analyses reveal that the two mean species-δ18Ocell chronologies are mainly modulated by December\textendashMay temperature, the N. pumilio chronology shows a greater sensitivity to record temperature variations (r = 0.57, p \textless 0.05). The δ18Ocell of N. pumilio contains a regional temperature signal representative of a large area in southern South America under the influence of the Southern Annular Mode. This study indicates that δ18Ocell in N. pumilio is a promising proxy to reconstruct past variations in temperature in South America south of 38°S.

25. Milankovitch Forcing and Meridional Moisture Flux in the Atmosphere: Insight from a Zonally Averaged Ocean–Atmosphere Model

Abstract: A 1-Myr-long time-dependent solution of a zonally averaged ocean–atmosphere model subject to Milankovitch forcing is examined to gain insight into long-term changes in the planetary-scale meridional moisture flux in the atmosphere. The model components are a one-dimensional (latitudinal) atmospheric energy balance model with an active hydrological cycle and an ocean circulation model representing four basins (Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans). This study finds that the inclusion of an active hydrological cycle does not significantly modify the responses of annual-mean air and ocean temperatures to Milankovitch forcing found in previous integrations with a fixed hydrological cycle. Likewise, the meridional overturning circulation of the North Atlantic Ocean is not significantly affected by hydrological changes. Rather, it mainly responds to precessionally driven variations of ocean temperature in subsurface layers (between 70- and 500-m depth) of this basin. On the other hand, annual and zonal means of evaporation rate and meridional flux of moisture in the atmosphere respond notably to obliquity-driven changes in the meridional gradient of annual-mean insolation. Thus, when obliquity is decreased (increased), the meridional moisture flux in the atmosphere is intensified (weakened). This hydrological response is consistent with deuterium excess records from polar ice cores, which are characterized by dominant obliquity cycles.

26. Evolution of the stable water isotopic composition of the rain sampled along Sahelian squall lines

Abstract: In the Tropics, the stable isotopic composition (HDO, H 18 2 O) of precipitation is strongly modulated by convective activity. To better understand how convective processes impact the precipitation isotopic composition, we analyze the isotopic composition of rain collected during the passage of four squall lines over the Sahel (Niamey, Niger) in August 2006 during the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) campaign. The high-frequency sampling (5−10 min) of the precipitation allows us to investigate the evolution of the precipitation isotopic composition in different phases of the squall lines. Despite a large variability among the different squall lines, some robust isotopic features appear: the W shape of the δ 18 O evolution and the deuterium excess decrease in the first part of the stratiform zone. To understand more quantitatively how convective processes impact the precipitation isotopic composition, a simple stationary two-dimensional transport model including a representation of cloud microphysics and isotopic fractionation is developed and forced by three-dimensional winds retrieved from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) radar on 11 August 2006. The model reproduces the robust observed features and a large sensitivity to the squall-line dynamics. This model suggests that the main controlling factors of the isotopic evolution are (1) squall-line dynamics, especially the downward advection of air at the rear of the squall lines, affecting the vapour composition and, by isotopic equilibration, the subsequent precipitation composition and (2) rain re-evaporation. This suggests that water isotopes have the potential to better constrain squall-line dynamics and rain re-evaporation, and to evaluate the representation of convective processes in numerical models.

Abstract: International audience; During the last deglaciation, the Bolivian Altiplano (15e23 S, 66e70 W) was occupied by paleolake Tauca covering, at least, ~51,000 km 2 at its maximum highstand between 16.5 and 15 ka. Twenty-five hundred years later, after a massive regression, a new transgressive phase, produced paleolake Coi-pasa, smaller than Tauca and restricted to the southern part of the basin. These paleolakes were overlooked at the west by the Sajama ice cap. The latter provides a continuous record of the oxygen isotopic composition of paleo-precipitation for the last 25 ka. Contemporaneously to the end of paleolake Tauca, around 14.3 ka, the Sajama ice cap recorded a significant increase in ice oxygen isotopic composition (d 18 O ice). This paper examines to what extent the disappearance of Lake Tauca contributed to precipitation on the Sajama summit and this specific isotopic variation. The water d 18 O values of paleolakes Tauca and Coipasa (d 18 O lake) were quantitatively reconstructed from 18.5 to 11.7 ka based on diatom isotopic composition (d 18 O diatoms) and ostracod isotopic composition (d 18 O carbonates) retrieved in lacus-trine sediments. At a centennial time scale, a strong trend appears: abrupt decreases of d 18 O lake during lake fillings are immediately followed by abrupt increases of d 18 O lake during lake level stable phases. The highest variation occurred at ~15.8 ka with a d 18 O lake decrease of about ~10‰, concomitant with the Lake Tauca highstand, followed ~400 years later by a 7‰ increase in d 18 O lake. A simple hydro-isotopic modeling approach reproduces consistently this rapid "decreaseeincrease" feature. Moreover, it suggests that this unexpected re-increase in d 18 O lake after filling phases can be partly explained by an equilibration of isotopic fluxes during the lake steady-state. Based on isotopic calculations during lake evaporation and a simple water stable isotopes balance between potential moisture sources at Sajama (advection versus lake evaporation), we show that total or partial evaporation (from 5 to 60%) of pale-olake Tauca during its major regression phase at 14.3 ka could explain the pronounced isotopic excursion at Sajama ice cap. These results suggest that perturbations of the local hydrological cycle in lacustrine areas may substantially affect the paleoclimatic interpretation of the nearby isotopic signals (e.g. ice core or speleothems).

Abstract: International audience; The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is the primary pattern of climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere1,2, influencing latitudinal rainfall distribution and temperatures from the subtropics to Antarctica. The positive summer trend in the SAM over recent decades is widely attributed to stratospheric ozone depletion2; however, the brevity of observational records from Antarctica1\textemdashone of the core zones that defines SAM variability\textemdashlimits our understanding of long-term SAM behaviour. Here we reconstruct annual mean changes in the SAM since AD 1000 using, for the first time, proxy records that encompass the full mid-latitude to polar domain across the Drake Passage sector. We find that the SAM has undergone a progressive shift towards its positive phase since the fifteenth century, causing cooling of the main Antarctic continent at the same time that the Antarctic Peninsula has warmed. The positive trend in the SAM since ~AD 1940 is reproduced by multimodel climate simulations forced with rising greenhouse gas levels and later ozone depletion, and the long-term average SAM index is now at its highest level for at least the past 1,000 years. Reconstructed SAM trends before the twentieth century are more prominent than those in radiative-forcing climate experiments and may be associated with a teleconnected response to tropical Pacific climate. Our findings imply that predictions of further greenhouse-driven increases in the SAM over the coming century3 also need to account for the possibility of opposing effects from tropical Pacific climate changes.

Abstract: International audience; The isotopic composition of surface water vapor (δv) has been measured continuously in Niamey along with the isotopic composition of event-based precipitation (δp) since 2010. We investigate the evolution of water vapor and precipitation isotope ratios during rain events of the 2010, 2011, and 2012 monsoon periods. We establish a classification of rain systems into three types based on the δv temporal evolution. We find that 51% of rain events (class A) exhibit a sharp decrease in δ18Ov in phase with the surface air temperature drop, leading to a depletion of water vapor by −1.9‰ on average during rainfall. Twenty-nine percent of rain events (class B) show a similar decrease in δ18Ov in phase with the temperature drop but are characterized by a progressive enrichment of the vapor in the stratiform region, resulting in a depletion of water vapor by −1.2‰ on average during rainfall. The last 20% of the rain events (class C) are associated with a progressive increase in δ18Ov during rainfall (+0.8‰). We also examine the temporal evolution of water vapor deuterium excess (dv) which shows a sharp increase as δ18Ov decreases, followed by a progressive decrease in the stratiform part for classes A and B. Using a basic box model, we examine for each class the respective roles that mesoscale subsidence and rain evaporation play on the evolution of δ18Ov. We show that those two processes are dominant for class A, whereas other processes may exert a major role on δ18Ov for classes B and C.

Abstract: International audience; Here we present and analyze the complete Vostok ice cores deuterium excess record which spans the last four climatic cycles, back to-420,000 years B.P. To extract paleoclimate information from this record, we use isotopic modeling showing that changes in deuterium excess (d=fD-86•80) of Vostok precipitation reflect changes in the average temperature of oceanic moisture sources. Over the last 250,000 years the deuterium excess is strongly anticorrelated with changes in Earth's obliquity. This reflects changes in the relative contribution of low and high latitudes to the Vostok precipitation, resulting from changes in the latitudinal annual mean insolation gradient governed by the obliquity. However, this modulation by obliquity is not observed prior to 250,000 years B.P. We attribute this difference to the ice flow, the deeper ice under Vostok station having accumulated in a location upstream Vostok, receiving precipitation from different oceanic origins. Despite this difference between the earlier and the later portions of the record, the deuterium excess changes during all the glacial inceptions are similar in amplitude and timing relative to the deuterium decrease. The glacial inceptions are characterized by high deuterium excess, indicating the significant role of the tropics in supplying moisture to the already cold poles.

Abstract: International audience; Four Holocene-long East Antarctic deuterium excess records are used to study past changes of the hydrological cycle in the Southern Hemisphere. We combine simple and complex isotopic models to quantify the relationships between Antarctic deuterium excess fluctuations and the sea surface temperature (SST) integrated over the moisture source areas for Antarctic snow. The common deuterium excess increasing trend during the first half of the Holocene is therefore interpreted in terms of a warming of the average ocean moisture source regions over this time. Available Southern Hemisphere SST records exhibit opposite trends at low latitudes (warming) and at high latitudes (cooling) during the Holocene. The agreement between the Antarctic deuterium excess and low-latitude SST trends supports the idea that the tropics dominate in providing moisture for Antarctic precipitation. The opposite trends in SSTs at low and high latitudes can potentially be explained by the decreasing obliquity during the Holocene inducing opposite trends in the local mean annual insolation between low and high latitudes. It also implies an increased latitudinal insolation gradient that in turn can maintain a stronger atmospheric circulation transporting more tropical moisture to Antarctica. This mechanism is supported by results from a mid-Holocene climate simulation performed using a coupled ocean-atmosphere model.

Abstract: International audience; Isotope studies show that the Vostok ice core consists of ice refrozen from Lake Vostok water, from 3539 meters below the surface of the Antarctic ice sheet to its bottom at about 3750 meters. Additional evidence comes from the total gas content, crystal size, and electrical conductivity of the ice. The Vostok site is a likely place for water freezing at the lake-ice interface, because this interface occurs at a higher level here than anywhere else above the lake. Isotopic data suggest that subglacial Lake Vostok is an open system with an efficient circulation of water that was formed during periods that were slightly warmer than those of the past 420,000 years. Lake ice recovered by deep drilling is of interest for preliminary investigations of lake chemistry and bedrock properties and for the search for indigenous lake microorganisms. Abstract: EnglishSince Athanase Peltier, in 1840, physicists, meteorologists, and climatologists have shown an interest for tornadoes in France, especially in the second half of the 19th century and since the end of the 20th century. The association Climat-Energie-Environnement has established a database, presently containing 525 cases collected in France since 1680, enabling scientists to propose a climatology of the phenomenon. The present study focuses on the spectacular manifestations of tornadoes, including the noise surrounding the incoming meteor, the removal of water, persons, animals, and objects upon its passage, the projection of various materials, and, finally, the damages due to the effects of the excess of pressure.This study reveals the evolution of observations, along that of physics and meteorology, and it will be useful for the classification of the intensity of tornadoes on the improved Fujita scale, as well as for the knowledge of risks incurred on the metropolitan territory. francaisLa composition isotopique des precipitations est utilisee depuis longtemps pour reconstruire la variabilite climatique passee a partir de sa conservation dans des archives comme les glaciers, les speleothemes, etc. Elle permet aussi d'aborder et de decortiquer des mecanismes qui regissent le climat present. La mise sur le marche d'une nouvelle technique a permis d'etendre les mesures isotopiques sur la phase vapeur et d'acceder a une information continue dans le temps. A travers divers exemples choisis sur des terrains varies, des regions polaires aux tropiques, cet article illustre le potentiel de la composition isotopique de la vapeur d'eau en surface, en regard de donnees meteorologiques plus classiques, pour etudier des processus aussi divers que le melange de masses d'air, l'origine de la vapeur d'eau, la structure, l'intensite et l'organisation de la convection, la formation et la dissipation des nappes de brouillard et la circulation atmospherique a differentes echelles de temps.

Abstract: Over the past 50 years, warming of the Antarctic Peninsula has been accompanied by accelerating glacier mass loss and the retreat and collapse of ice shelves. A key driver of ice loss is summer melting; however, it is not usually possible to specifically reconstruct the summer conditions that are critical for determining ice melt in Antarctic. Here we reconstruct changes in ice-melt intensity and mean temperature on the northern Antarctic Peninsula since AD 1000 based on the identification of visible melt layers in the James Ross Island ice core and local mean annual temperature estimates from the deuterium content of the ice. During the past millennium, the coolest conditions and lowest melt occurred from about AD 1410 to 1460, when mean temperature was 1.6 degrees C lower than that of 1981-2000. Since the late 1400s, there has been a nearly tenfold increase in melt intensity from 0.5 to 4.9%. The warming has occurred in progressive phases since about AD 1460, but intensification of melt is nonlinear, and has largely occurred since the mid-twentieth century. Summer melting is now at a level that is unprecedented over the past 1,000 years. We conclude that ice on the Antarctic Peninsula is now particularly susceptible to rapid increases in melting and loss in response to relatively small increases in mean temperature.

35. What controls the spatio-temporal distribution of D-excess and 17O-excess in precipitation? A general circulation model study

Abstract: Combined measurements of the H218O and HDO isotopic ratios in precipitation, leading to second-order parameter D-excess, have provided additional constraints on past climates compared to the H218O isotopic ratio alone. More recently, measurements of H217O have led to another second-order parameter: 17O-excess. Recent studies suggest that 17O-excess in polar ice may provide information on evaporative conditions at the moisture source. However, the processes controlling the spatio-temporal distribution of 17O-excess are still far from being fully understood. We use the isotopic general circulation model LMDZ to better understand what controls D-excess and 17O-excess in precipitation at present-day (PD) and during the last glacial maximum (LGM). The simulation of D-excess and 17O-excess is evaluated against measurements in meteoric water, water vapor and polar ice cores. A set of sensitivity tests and diagnostics are used to quantify the relative effects of evaporative conditions (sea surface temperature and relative humidity), Rayleigh distillation, precipitation re-evaporation and supersaturation during condensation at low temperature. Simulations suggest that in the tropics convective processes and rain re-evaporation are important controls on D-excess and 17O-excess. In higher latitudes, the effect of distillation, transport and mixing balance the effect of supersaturation. Since these terms are very large and near cancellation, results for both PD and LGM are very sensitive to the supersaturation function. The lower D-excess and 17O-excess at LGM simulated at LGM are dominated by the supersaturation effect. Evaporative conditions had previously been suggested to be key controling factors of D-excess and 17O-excess. In LMDZ, evaporative conditions are key in explaining the PD latitudinal and seasonal distributions, but play little role for 17O-excess and for LGM variations. However, the LMDZ may underestimate this role. More generally, some shortcomings in the simulation of 17O-excess by LMDZ suggest that GCMs are not yet the perfect tool to quantify with confidence all processes controlling 17O-excess.

Abstract: [1] We present a 1-year long representativeδ18O record of water vapor (δ18Ov) in Niamey (Niger) using the Wavelength Scanned-Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy (WS-CRDS). We explore how local and regional atmospheric processes influenceδ18Ov variability from seasonal to diurnal scale. At seasonal scale, δ18Ovexhibits a W-shape, associated with the increase of regional convective activity during the monsoon and the intensification of large scale subsidence North of Niamey during the dry season. During the monsoon season,δ18Ovrecords a broad range of intra-seasonal modes in the 25–40-day and 15–25-day bands that could be related to the well-known modes of the West African Monsoon (WAM). Strongδ18Ovmodulations are also seen at the synoptic scale (5–9 days) during winter, driven by tropical-extra-tropical teleconnections through the propagation of a baroclinic wave train-like structure and intrusion of air originating from higher altitude and latitude.δ18Ovalso reveals a significant diurnal cycle, which reflects mixing process between the boundary layer and the free atmosphere during the dry season, and records the propagation of density currents associated with meso-scale convective systems during the monsoon season.

Abstract: The new infrared laser spectroscopic techniques enable us to measure the isotopic composition (delta O-18 and delta H-2) of atmospheric water vapor. With the objective of monitoring the isotopic composition of tropical water vapor (West Africa, South America), and to discuss deuterium excess variability (d = delta H-2 - 8 delta O-18) with an accuracy similar to measurements arising from isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), we have conducted a number of tests and calibrations using a wavelength-scanned cavity ring-down spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) technique. We focus in this paper on four main aspects regarding (1) the tubing material, (2) the humidity calibration of the instrument, (3) the water vapor concentration effects on delta, and (4) the isotopic calibration of the instrument. First, we show that Synflex tubing strongly affects delta H-2 measurements and thus leads to unusable d values. Second, we show that the mixing ratio as measured by WS-CRDS has to be calibrated versus atmospheric mixing ratio measurements and we also suggest possible non-linear effects over the whole mixing ratio range (similar to 2 to 20 g/kg). Third, we show that significant non-linear effects are induced by water vapor concentration variations on delta measurements, especially for mixing ratios lower than similar to 5 g/kg. This effect induces a 5 to 10% error in deuterium excess and is instrument-dependent. Finally, we show that an isotopic calibration (comparison between measured and true values of isotopic water standards) is needed to avoid errors on deuterium excess that can attain similar to 10%.

Abstract: We compare the present and last interglacial periods as recorded in Antarctic water stable isotope records now available at various temporal resolutions from six East Antarctic ice cores: Vostok, Taylor Dome, EPICA Dome C (EDC), EPICA Dronning Maud Land (EDML), Dome Fuji and the recent TALDICE ice core from Talos Dome. We first review the different modern site characteristics in terms of ice flow, meteorological conditions, precipitation intermittency and moisture origin, as depicted by meteorological data, atmospheric reanalyses and Lagrangian moisture source diagnostics. These different factors can indeed alter the relationships between temperature and water stable isotopes. Using five records with sufficient resolution on the EDC3 age scale, common features are quantified through principal component analyses. Consistent with instrumental records and atmospheric model results, the ice core data depict rather coherent and homogenous patterns in East Antarctica during the last two interglacials. Across the East Antarctic plateau, regional differences, with respect to the common East Antarctic signal, appear to have similar patterns during the current and last interglacials. We identify two abrupt shifts in isotopic records during glacial inception at TALDICE and EDML, likely caused by regional sea ice expansion. These regional differences are discussed in terms of moisture origin and in terms of past changes in local elevation histories which are compared to ice sheet model results. Our results suggest that, for coastal sites, elevation changes may contribute significantly to inter-site differences. These elevation changes may be underestimated by current ice sheet models.

Abstract: Water stable isotopes (delta) in tropical regions are a valuable tool to study both convective processes and climate variability provided that local and remote controls on hare well known. Here, we examine the intra-seasonal variability of the event-based isotopic composition of precipitation (delta D-Zongo) in the Bolivian Andes (Zongo valley, 16 degrees 20'S-67 degrees 47'W) from September 1st, 1999 to August 31st, 2000. We show that the local amount effect is a very poor parameter to explain delta D-Zongo. We thus explore the property of water isotopes to integrate both temporal and spatial convective activities. We first show that the local convective activity averaged over the 7-8 days preceding the rainy event is an important control on delta D-Zongo during the rainy season (similar to 40% of the delta D-Zongo variability is captured). This could be explained by the progressive depletion of local water vapor by unsaturated downdrafts of convective systems. The exploration of remote convective controls on delta D-Zongo shows a strong influence of the South American SeeSaw (SASS) which is the first climate mode controlling the precipitation variability in tropical South America during austral summer. Our study clearly evidences that temporal and spatial controls are not fully independent as the 7-day averaged convection in the Zongo valley responds to the SASS. Our results are finally used to evaluate a water isotope enabled atmospheric general circulation model (LMDZ-iso), using the stretched grid functionality to run zoomed simulations over the entire South American continent (15 degrees N-55 degrees S; 30 degrees-85 degrees W). We find that zoomed simulations capture the intra-seasonal isotopic variation and its controls, though with an overestimated local sensitivity, and confirm the role of a remote control on delta according to a SASS-like dipolar structure.

Abstract: International audience; This study provides new geochronological and stable isotope constraints on Late Pleistocene fluctuations in lake level that occurred in the closed-watershed of the Central Altiplano between similar to 25 and similar to 12 ka. U-series isochrons and C-14 ages from carbonates are used to confirm and refine the previous chronology published (Placzek et al., 2006b). Our new data support three successive lake highstands during the Late Pleistocene: (i) the lake Sajsi cycle, from similar to 25 to 19 ka, that culminated at 3670 m at about 22 ka, almost synchronously with the global last glacial maximum, (ii) the Lake Tauca cycle, that lasted from 18 to 14.5 ka and was characterized by the highest water level, reached at least 3770 m from 16.5 to 15 ka, (iii) the Lake Coipasa cycle, from 12.5 to 11.9 ka, that reached an elevation of similar to 3700 m, 42 m above the elevation of the Salar de Uyuni (3658 m). These high amplitude lake level fluctuations are in phase with the cold-warm oscillations that occurred in the North Atlantic and Greenland during the Late Pleistocene (Heinrich 1, Bolling-Allerod, Younger Dryas). Such temporal coincidence supports the hypothesis that wet events recorded in the Central Altiplano are controlled by the north-south displacement of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone resulting from changes in the meridional temperature gradient. Finally, the oxygen isotope ratios measured in these lacustrine carbonates allows for calculation of the delta O-18 value of paleolake waters. Estimates of water delta O-18 (V-SMOW) are -2.8 +/- 0.7 parts per thousand for Lake Tauca and -1.6 +/- 0.9 parts per thousand, for Lake Coipasa. These data are used to constrain changes in lake hydrology and can be interpreted to indicate that the proportion of precipitation arising from local water recycling was less than 50%. Abstract: EnglishThis study lies on deuterium excess interpretation in polar ice cores. Climate modelling studies, including isotope tracors in the atmospheric water cycle, show that in polar precipitation deuterium excess is primarily controlled by sea surface temperature in the oceanic region where precipitation originate from. In this way, the analysis of deuterium excess in the Vostok (Antarctica) ice core over the last 420,000 leads to several fundamental results for the understanding of Earth's past climate. francaisCette etude repose sur l'analyse de l'exces en deuterium dans les glaces polaires. Abstract: An unexpectedly low annual net accumulation (20 cm w.e.a−1) has been inferred from analyses of a firn core extracted from Glaciar Monte San Valentín, Northern Patagonia Icefield (46°35′ S, 73°19′ W; 3747 m a.s.l.). We test a hypothesis linking the low accumulation to a frequent lack of cloud cover over the mountain range at this altitude. The cloudiness over Monte San Valentín and surrounding regions is examined using ∼3000 daily MODIS satellite images from 2000 to 2008. The visual evaluation of the synoptic situation leads to the definition of a daily cloudiness index (EI) for the San Valentín summit and for the regions to the southwest (SW) and northeast (NE). We check its robustness by applying different tests and comparisons. Three levels are assigned for the EI: ‘clear’ (EI = 0), ‘cloudy’ (EI = 1) and ‘mixed’ (EI = 0.5). The results show that the SV cloud cover is similar to the regional cloudiness for more than half the year (54%) and that the case in which the San Valentín summit is clear while both SW and NE regions are cloudy is exceptional (2%). As clouds are necessary to provide precipitation, we show that the low annual net accumulation cannot be explained by an uncommon low cloudiness. This result implies that net accumulation inferred from ice cores in this Andean region must be cautiously interpreted. We also point out that the Andes at this latitude acts as an orographic barrier but without a total blocking of air masses.

Abstract: The goal of this paper is to investigate the added value of water isotopic measurements to estimate the relative influence of large-scale dynamics, convection, and land surface recycling on the Sahelian water budget. To this aim, we use isotope data in the lower tropospheric water vapor measured by the SCIAMACHY and TES satellite instruments and in situ precipitation data from the Global Network for Isotopes in Precipitation and collected during the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis field campaign, together with water-tagging experiments with the Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique general circulation model (LMDZ) fitted with isotopes. We show that some isotopic biases in LMDZ reveal the misrepresentation of dehydrating processes that would be undetected without isotopic measurements. In dry regions, the vapor isotopic composition is primarily controlled by the intensity of the air dehydration. In addition, it may also keep some memory of dehydration pathways that is erased in the humidity distribution, namely the relative contribution of dehydration in the tropical upper troposphere versus midlatitudes. In wet regions, vapor and rain isotope compositions are primarily controlled by changes in convection, through rain reevaporation and through the progressive depletion of the vapor by convective mixing along air mass trajectories. Gradients in vapor isotope composition along air mass trajectories may help estimate continental recycling intensity, provided that we could quantify the effect of convection on the isotopic composition of water vapor.

Abstract: International audience; Combined measurements of delta O-18, delta O-17, and delta D in ice cores, leading to d excess and O-17 excess, are expected to provide new constraints on the water cycle and past climates. We explore different processes, both in the source regions and during the poleward transport, that could explain the O-17 excess increase by 20 per meg observed from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to Early Holocene (EH) at the Vostok station. Using a single-column model over tropical and subtropical oceans, we show that the relative humidity at the surface is the main factor controlling O-17 excess in source regions. Then, using a Rayleigh-type model, we show that the O-17 excess signal from the source region is preserved in the polar snowfall, contrary to d excess. Evaporative recharge over mid and high latitudes and delta O-18 seasonality in polar regions can also affect the Vostok O-17 excess but cannot account for most of the 20 per meg deglacial increase from LGM to EH. On the other hand, a decrease of the relative humidity at the surface (rh(s)) by 8 to 22% would explain the observed change in O-17 excess. Such a change would not necessarily be incompatible with a nearly unchanged boundary layer relative humidity, if the surface thermodynamic disequilibrium decreased by 4 degrees C. Such a change in rh(s) would affect source and polar temperatures reconstructions from delta O-18 and d excess measurements, strengthening the interest of O-17 excess measurements to better constrain such changes.

Abstract: Andean ice core investigations began approximately 30 years ago. Today, 10 drilling sites, from 0° to 52°S, have been explored for paleoclimate reconstructions. Most of the ice cores reaching the bedrock cover the last 20,000 years with seasonal resolution over the last few centuries to the last 1000 years for the Quelccaya site. We discuss both the potential and the limitations of tropical ice cores as climate archives with regard to the collaborative effort to reconstruct past climate variations in South America over the last 1000 years. We point out the uniqueness of South American ice cores, due to their location at high altitude, and also their two main limitations, which are related to (i) the interpretation of certain proxies in terms of climate and (ii) the relatively poor dating when seasonal cycles are no longer resolved. In addition, we present an overview of the proxies that have been used so far to analyze tropical climate dynamics. Finally we discuss records of ENSO, the Little Ice Age and the 20th century decadal variability, including the anthropogenic period, which are all preserved in ice cores.

Abstract: Paleorainfall variability on orbital and millennial time scales is discussed for the last glacial period and the Holocene, based on a multi-proxy study of speleothem records from Brazil. Oxygen isotope (δ18O) records from Botuvera and Santana caves, precisely dated by U-series methods, indicate stronger summer monsoon circulation in subtropical Brazil during periods of high summer insolation in the southern hemisphere. In addition, variations in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios from speleothems confirm that this monsoon intensification led to an increase in the long-term mean rainfall during insolation maxima. However, they also suggest that glacial boundary conditions, especially ice volume buildup in the northern hemisphere, promoted an additional displacement of the monsoon system to the south, which produced rather wet conditions during the period from approximately 70 to 17 ka B.P., in particular at the height of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). These δ18O records, together with speleothem growth intervals from northeastern Brazil, have also revealed new insights into the influence of the northern hemisphere millennial-scale events on the tropical hydrological cycle in South America. This teleconnection pattern is expressed by an out-of-phase relationship between precipitation changes inferred from speleothem records in Brazil and China, particularly during Heinrich events and the Younger Dryas. We argue that the pronounced hemispheric asymmetry of moisture is a reflection of the impact of meridional overturning circulation conditions on the position and intensity of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Abstract: International audience; In the tropics, the proportion of heavier water isotopes in precipitation is anticorrelated with the precipitation amount. The physical processes underlying this so-called amount effect are still poorly understood and quantified. In the present study, stable water isotopes (H 2 18 O and HDO) have been introduced in a single column model including the Emanuel convection parameterization. We investigate the physical processes underlying the amount effect and propose a methodology to quantify their relative contributions. We focus on convective processes, since the idealized framework of the single column models does not allow us to consider the effects of large-scale horizontal advections of air masses of different isotopic signatures. We show that two kinds of processes predominantly explain the amount effect: first, the reevaporation of the falling rain and the diffusive exchanges with the surrounding vapor; and second, the recycling of the subcloud layer vapor feeding the convective system by convective fluxes. This highlights the importance of a detailed representation of rain evaporation processes to simulate accurately the isotopic composition of precipitation in the tropics. The variability of the isotopic composition on different timescales (from days to months) is also studied using a unidimensional simulation of the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere-Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA-COARE) campaign. The amount effect is best observable at intraseasonal or longer timescales. The period of time over which convective activity significantly affects the isotopic composition of precipitation is related to the residence time of water within atmospheric reservoirs.

Abstract: International audience; Cumulus convection constitutes a key process in the control of tropical precipitation and the vertical transport of atmospheric water. To better understand the influence of convective processes on the isotopic composition of precipitation and water vapor, water stable isotopes (H218O and HDO) are introduced into a single column model including the Emanuel convective parameterization. This paper analyzes unidimensional simulations of the tropical atmosphere in a state of radiative‐convective equilibrium, and simulations forced by data from the Tropical Ocean–Global Atmosphere–Coupled Ocean‐Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA‐COARE). This study shows that deep convective atmospheres are associated with robust isotopic features such as an isotopic composition of the air below the tropical tropopause layer (around 12–13 km) close to the typical values observed in the lower tropical stratosphere, and an isotopic enrichment of the upper tropospheric water that starts well below the tropopause. It highlights the critical role of condensate lofting and convective detrainment in these features, and the role of convective unsaturated downdrafts in the control of the isotopic composition of precipitation. Finally, it shows that the so‐called “amount effect” primarily reveals the influence of large‐scale atmospheric circulation changes on the isotopic composition of the precipitation, and that temperature changes not associated with circulation changes lead to an “anti–amount effect”. The detailed analysis of the physical processes underlying the “amount effect” is presented in a companion paper.

Abstract: A database of surface Antarctic snow isotopic composition is constructed using available measurements, with an estimate of data quality and local variability. Although more than 1000 locations are documented, the spatial coverage remains uneven with a majority of sites located in specific areas of East Antarctica. The database is used to analyze the spatial variations in snow isotopic composition with respect to geographical characteristics (elevation, distance to the coast) and climatic features (temperature, accumulation) and with a focus on deuterium excess. The capacity of theoretical isotopic, regional, and general circulation atmospheric models (including "isotopic" models) to reproduce the observed features and assess the role of moisture advection in spatial deuterium excess fluctuations is analyzed, Stable isotope analyses at LSCE have been funded by CEA, CNRS, ACI C3. Italian research was funded by National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA). The calibration of the isotope–temperature relationship is part of the European Commission 6th PCRDT EPICA-MIS and French ANR PICC projects. This work is a contribution to the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA), a joint European Science Foundation/European Commission scientific program, funded by the EU and by national contributions from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Abstract: International audience; The study of past climate variability from ice core investigations has been largely developed both in polar areas over the past decades and, more recently, in tropical regions, specifically along the South American Andes between 0° and 20°S. However a large gap still remains at mid-latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. In this framework, a 15.3-m long shallow firn core has been extracted in March 2005 from the summit plateau of Monte San Valentín (3747 m, 46°35′S, 73°19′W) in the Northern Patagonia Icefield to test its potential for paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. The firn temperature is −11.9°C at 10-m depth allowing to expect well preserved both chemical and isotopic signals, unperturbed by water percolation. The dating of the core, on the basis of a multi-proxy approach combining annual layer counting and radionuclide measurements, shows that past environment and climate can be reconstructed back to the mid-1960s. A mean annual snow accumulation rate of 36 ± 3 cm year−1 (i.e., 19 ± 2 g cm−2 year−1) is inferred, with a snow density varying between 0.35 and 0.6 g cm−3, which is much lower than accumulation rates previously reported in Patagonia at lower elevations. Here, we present and discuss high-resolution profiles of the isotopic composition of the snow and selected chemical markers. These data provide original information on environmental conditions prevailing over Southern Patagonia in terms of air masses trajectories and origins and biogeochemical reservoirs. Our main conclusion is that the San Valentín site is not only influenced by air masses originating from the southern Pacific and directly transported by the prevailing west winds but also by inputs from South American continental sources from the E–NE, sometimes mixed with circumpolar aged air masses, the relative influence of these two very distinct source areas changing at the interannual timescale. Thus this site should offer a wealth of information regarding (South) Pacific, Argentinian NE–E areas and Antarctic climate variability.
