Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states in $^{229}$Th, populated in the $\beta$-decay of $^{229}$Ac, have been measured using the advanced time-delayed $\beta\gamma\gamma$(t)-method. Half-lives of 14 states have been determined including 11 of them for the first time. Twenty-seven new $\gamma$-lines have been introduced into the $\beta$-decay scheme of $^{229}$Ac based on results of $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence measurements. Reduced transition probabilities have been determined for more than 70 $\gamma$-transitions in $^{229}$Th. Average ∣D$_{0}$∣ values of 0.029(1), 0.077(3) and 0.024(5) $e$ fm have been deduced for the lowest K$^{\pi}$=1/2$^{\pm}$ , 3/2$^{\pm}$ and 5/2$^{\pm}$ parity partner bands, respectively. Excited states in $^{229}$Th and experimental transition rates have been interpreted within the quasiparticle-plus-phonon model. The half-life of the 3.5 eV , 3/2$^{+}$ isomeric state is predicted to be about 10 h. Potential energy surfaces on the ($\beta_{2}\,,\,\beta_{3}$) plane for the lowest single quasiparticle configurations in $^{229}$Th have been calculated using the Strutinsky method.

Abstract

The level structure of odd-odd $^{134}$Sb has been studied at CERN/ISOLDE following the $\beta\!^{-}$-decay of $^{134}$Sn and the $\beta$-delayed neutron decay of $^{135}$Sn. Elemental and isobaric separation were accomplished by use of a resonance ionization laser ion source and an on-line mass separator, respectively. Both $\gamma$-ray singles and $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence data were taken as a function of time. New levels at 279, 441, 555, 617, and 1385 keV have been identified and given proposed spin and parity assignments of 7$^{−}$, 5$^{−}$, 6$^{−}$, 4$^{−}$, and 5$^{−}$, respectively, following $\beta$-delayed neutron decay of 7/2$^{−}$ $^{135}$Sn. New 1$^{−}$ levels have been identified at 1900, 2170, and 2430 keV following the $\beta\!^{-}$-decay of 0$\!^{+}$ $^{134}\!$Sn. The resulting level structures are compared to shell-model calculations using the CD Bonn interaction and scaled and unscaled Kuo-Herling interactions developed for the $^{208}$Pb region. Remarkably enough, the unscaled Kuo-Herling interaction provides the best fit for the levels below 1 MeV.

Abstract

The $\beta$- decay of $^{135}$Sn was studied at CERN/ISOLDE using a resonance ionization laser ion source and mass separator to achieve elemental and mass selectivity, respectively. $\gamma$-ray singles and $\gamma\gamma$ coincidence spectra were collected as a function of time with the laser on and with the laser off. These data were used to establish the positions of new levels in $^{135}$Sb, including new low-spin states at 440 and 798 keV, which are given tentative spin and parity assignments of 3/2$^{+}$ and 9/2$^{+}$, respectively. The observed levels of $^{135}$Sb are compared with shell-model calculations using different single-particle energies and different interactions.

Abstract

Yields of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe isotopic chains were measured from UC$_{x}$/graphite and ThC$_{x}$/graphite targets at the PSB-ISOLDE facility at CERN using isobaric selectivity achieved by the combination of a plasma-discharge ion source with a water-cooled transfer line. %The measured half-lives allowed %to calculate the decay losses of neutron-rich isotopes in the %target and ion-source system, and thus to obtain information on the in-target %productions from the measured yields. Abstract

The mirror $\beta^+$-decay of $^{61}$Ga was investigated by means of $\beta$-ray and $\gamma$-ray spectrometry at the ISOLDE-PSB facility using laser ionisation and mass-separation. The results for the $^{61}$Ga half-life and the $Q\scriptstyle_\textrm{EC}$ value are 168(3) ms and 9255(50) keV, respectively. The $\beta$-decay strength to the ground and low-lying excited states of the daughter $^{61}$Zn was deduced. The experimental results are in a good agreement with large-scale shell model calculations.

In nuclear reactions induced by stable beams, dipole polarizability does not play a major role. For nuclei close to the drip lines where the separation energies of neutrons or protons are small, a substantial part of the dipole strength function occurs at low excitation energies. We propose to investigate this effect by measuring elastic scattering and break-up of Li-11 at energies below the Coulomb barrier.
