The Pierre Auger Observatory is a facility built to detect air showers produced by cosmic rays above 1017 eV. During clear nights with a low illuminated moon fraction, the UV fluorescence light produced by air showers is recorded by optical telescopes at the Observatory. To correct the observations for variations in atmospheric conditions, atmospheric monitoring is performed at regular intervals ranging from several minutes (for cloud identification) to several hours (for aerosol conditions) to several days (for vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, and humidity). In 2009, the monitoring program was upgraded to allow for additional targeted measurements of atmospheric conditions shortly after the detection of air showers of special interest, e. g., showers produced by very high-energy cosmic rays or showers with atypical longitudinal profiles. The former events are of particular importance for the determination of the energy scale of the Observatory, and the latter are characteristic of unusual air shower physics or exotic primary particle types. The purpose of targeted (or "rapid") monitoring is to improve the resolution of the atmospheric measurements for such events. In this paper, we report on the implementation of the rapid monitoring program and its current status. The rapid monitoring data have been analyzed and applied to the reconstruction of air showers of high interest, and indicate that the air fluorescence measurements affected by clouds and aerosols are effectively corrected using measurements from the regular atmospheric monitoring program. We find that the rapid monitoring program has potential for supporting dedicated physics analyses beyond the standard event reconstruction.

- Abstract
The liver of tumor-bearing hosts manifests fetal phenotypes. We investigated the expression of differentiation markers on the liver in MMTV-neu (ErbB-2) transgenic mice, in the period from incipient neoangiogenesis to lung metastatization. We report AFP expression by hepatocytes in all lobular zones, CD34 cell arrest and subsequent hemopoiesis in periportal and mid-zone areas, oval-like cells (CD34+, CK19+, AFP+) and ductular reaction in portal tracts, portal CK19+ and GGT+ hepatoblast-like cells, and midzonal large dysplastic hepatocytes. We hypothesize that CD34 cells are recruited by the tumor from the marrow for angiogenic purposes and that their differentiation in the liver is influenced by altered liver microenvironment(s). AFP may act as a growth factor and biological response modifier for these cells and for the tumor. Dysplasia might be enhanced by metabolic stress. We conclude that the liver differentiation potential is lobular-zone-dependent and that the risk for eventually developing a pre-malignant lesion is not negligible.

Recently, among myelodysplastic syndromes with IPSS low/intermediate 1 risk classes, promising results have been obtained in the treatment of anemia by high dosage recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) treatment, in the cases with low endogenous erythropoietin (EPO). We have reproduced these clinical results in the patients treated at our Institution. Based on these premises, in order to evaluate the molecular basis of the rHuEPO response in MDS patients, we investigated the differential gene expression in the bone marrow erythroid cells expressing glycophorin (Gly+) of EPO-responders (ER) and EPO-non responders (ENR) MDS patients, using commercially available macroarrays (Clontech), comparing gene level of expression with a baseline represented by a pool of erythoid cells isolated from normal bone marrow donors. We analysed 4 ER and 4 ENR MDS patients (RA and RARS). BM erythroid cells, after Ficoll density gradient, were separated by positive selection using an immunomagnetic procedure (MACS, glycophorin isolation kit; Miltenyi Biotech, Auburn, CA). The purity of Gly+ cells after magnetic immunosorting was tested by flow-cytometry and was superior to 97%, in all the cases. RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and macroarrays hybridization and analysis were performed following manufacturer instructions (Clontech Laboratories, Palo Alto, CA). The data were validated on 4 differentially expressed genes by real time RT-PCR TaqMan technology, obtaining results that were superimposable to the macroarrays ones. Using a cut off of an at least two fold difference in gene expression, we obtained a differential pattern of expression in ER and ENR patients, BM Gly+ erythroid cells, with respect to normal donors. In particular, ER patients presented the up-regulation of interleukin-1 beta, apolipoprotein E precursor, CREB2, high mobility group protein (HMG-I), transducin beta-1 subunit and the down regulation of protein kinase MLK-3, cAMP-dependent phosphodiesterase (PDE43), IL-5R-alpha, caspase-9. On the other hand, in ENR group, we found a down regulation of proliferating cyclic nuclear antigen (PCNA), B-myb, prothymosin alpha, phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase, thymosin beta-10 and an up regulation of homeobox protein HOX-A5, monocarboxylate transporter 1, interleukin-6, deoxyribonuclease II, sterol regulatory element-binding protein, metalloproteinase inhibitor 1 precursor, rap1 GTPase activating protein 1 (RAP1GAP). In conclusion, ER and ENR MDS patients erythroid cells present a different pattern of gene expression with respect to normal. These results may provide the basis for early testing of the genes differentially expressed in ER and ENR patients in order to elucidate their role in the prognostication of rHuEPO response in MDS patients with low endogenous EPO levels.

- Abstract
Abstract Background: Limited studies on the prevalence and risk factors for superficial mycoses are available. Objective: The aim of this paper was to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for superficial mycoses (dermatophytes and Candida spp.) in a sample of young Italian people resident at a military school. Methods: A total of 1,024 young cadets from the Italian Navy Petty Officers School in Taranto, including 975 (95.21%) males and 49 (4.79%) females, mean age 22.5 ± 3.0 years (range 1830), were consecutively examined by the same observer. A complete dermatological examination was performed on all the subjects, and skin scrapings for microscopy and fungal culture were obtained from suspected lesions. All the subjects completed a questionnaire providing information on sports practice, swimming-pool attendance, marching, wearing shower sandals, frequent use of gummed shoes, history of severe traumas to the nails, presence of hyperhidrosis and history of superficial mycoses. The affected subjects were also asked if they were aware of their condition. Data were analysed by the Statistical Analysis System, version 8.0. The Fisher exact test and odds ratios were calculated. Results: A total of 33 subjects (3.2%) were found to suffer from a mycologically confirmed fungal infection (3% by dermatophytes and 0.2% by Candida albicans): tinea pedis/Candida intertrigo of the feet was suspected in 126 (12.1%) subjects and confirmed in 30 (2.9%), including 28 cases of tinea pedis and 2 cases of Candida intertrigo; tinea cruris/Candida intertrigo of the groin was suspected in 28 (2.7%) subjects, but confirmed in only 1 case (0.1%); onychomycosis was suspected in 64 (6.1%) subjects and confirmed in 2 cases (0.2%). The organism most frequently responsible in tinea pedis was Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (82.1%). The same species (50%) and T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (50%) were associated with tinea unguium, Epidermophyton floccosum was the only species detected in tinea cruris. Non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi (Penicillium spp., Fusarium spp., Aspergillus spp. and Paecilomyces spp.), not considered pathogenic, were isolated in 48 samples. None of the risk factors analysed were significantly associated with fungal infection. Only 2 subjects out of the 33 people affected were aware of their condition. They both had tinea pedis. Conclusion: The prevalence of mycoses in sailors living in an Italian military school was lower than rates detected in other military populations. This may be due to the cadets lifestyle and environmental conditions. The most frequent infection was tinea pedis, mainly caused by T. interdigitale. None of the investigated risk factors were significantly associated with the disease, and most of the affected individuals were not aware of their condition.Copyright © 2004 S. - Abstract
In the liver of adult mice bearing an Ehrlich carcinoma on the leg, progressively hypoxic and displaying reactive hepatitis but not metastatic dissemination, extramedullary hemopoiesis was detected. Electron microscopy revealed mainly erythropoietic islands and scattered megakaryocytes in maturation stages up to the platelet-releasing phase. Erythropoietic cells expressed an embryonic-type of hemoglobin, which is more adequate to oxygenate hypoxic environments than the adult type. They were positive for the peroxidase reaction due to the presence of hemoglobin and could furthermore be visualized by the blue-excited red autofluorescence of protoporphyrin IX. Extramedullary hemopoiesis, one of the various examples of reactivation of fetal features in the liver associated with carcinogenesis, is supposed to be compensatory for the loss of blood cells induced by the tumor. Reviewing this process has the purpose of raising the question whether the fetal features are better adapted than adult ones to the metabolic and physiological characteristics of a tumor-influenced organism.

- Abstract
Background: It is difficult to carry out studies on the prevalence of tinea pedis in the community. Some studies are performed on selected groups of subjects, exposed to the same risk factors, i.e. schoolchildren, public bathers, athletes and military men., Objective: The aim of this work was to detect in a sample of military men the prevalence of tinea pedis and the awareness of their condition, and to relate the infection to risk factors of the group as well., Methods: 410 male Italian navy cadets in an Italian navy petty officers school were clinically examined and mycological cultures were performed, employing the skin scrapings obtained from suspected lesions., Results: Dermatophytes were isolated from toe clefts in 10 subjects, giving a point prevalence of 2.4% (95% confidence interval 1.3-4.4%). The isolated dermatophytes were Trichophyton mentagrophytes (70%), Trichophyton rubrum (20%) and Epidermophyton floccosum (10%). None of the subjects was aware of his disease. No significant association was observed between tinea pedis and risk factors (i.e. hyperhidrosis and habits)., Conclusion: The prevalence in our sample was lower than that observed in previous studies on military men. That can be attributed to the general amelioration of hygienic conditions and strengthening of preventive habits. Therefore the prevalence of tinea pedis in Italian sailors seems to be reduced but still rather relevant. That is important because these subjects are a reservoir of ringworm infection., (Copyright 2000 S. Karger AG, Basel)
