Abstract: The direct CP violation parameter Re(ε′/ε) has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. With 3.3 million KL → π0π0 events collected during the 1998 and 1999 running periods, a result of Re(ε′/ε) = (15.0 ± 2.7) × 10-4 has been obtained. The result combined with the published 1997 sample is Re(ε′/ε) = (15.3 ± 2.6) × 10-4.

Abstract: A new precision measurement of the Ξ0 mass has been performed at the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. The value obtained is [1314.82±0.06 (stat.) ±0.2 (syst.)] MeV/c2. The branching ratios of Xi;0 radiative decays have been measured as: Br(Ξ0 → Λγ) = [1.90 ± 0.34(stat.) ± 0.19(syst.)] · 10-3 and Br(Ξ0 → ∑0γ) = [3.14 ± 0.76(stat.) ± 0.32(syst.)] · 10-3.

The Λ hyperons were detected at a fixed angle of 4.2 mrad in the momentum range from 50 GeV/c to 200 GeV/c. The polarization changes from -0.053 ± 0.034 to -0.298 ± 0.074 for a transverse momentum range of the Λ between 0.28 GeV/c and 0.86 GeV/c. The Λ̄ polarization is consistent with zero.

Abstract: The eects of space charge due to slowly drifting ions can be relevant for detectors operated at high intensity, or for relatively low values of the bias voltage. Accurate measurements have been obtained with the liquid krypton calorimeter of the NA48 experiment, from data collected in 1997. The build-up of space charge takes place during the rst part of the beam extraction burst, and causes a dependence of the response on the transverse coordinate of the axis of electromagnetic showers, and a small reduction of average amplitude. The eects are well reproduced by a computation, where the only free parameter is the value of the ion mobility. The model can be applied a wide range of operating conditions, and generalized to detectors with dierent geometry and active medium. Ionization detectors are usually not aected by ions, because the induced signal is dominated by the fast drifting electrons, and the total amount of ion charge accumulated in the detector cell is typically much smaller than the charge stored on the electrodes. However, space charge can produce observable eects in case of large particle intensities, or for relatively low values of the bias voltage. The liquid krypton calorimeter for the NA48 experiment at CERN was operated in 1997 with the bias voltage set at 1.5 kV over a gap of 1 cm, half of the value used in the following years. In this condition, small but precisely measurable eects of space charge have been observed. In the following sections, after a brief discussion of the design and performance of the NA48 calorimeter, a model of space charge eects in parallel plate detectors is described, and compared to experimental observations. Abstract: Recent results and prospects for precision tests of the Standard Model in kaon decay-in-flight experiments at CERN are presented. A measurement of the ratio of leptonic decay rates of the charged kaon at the level of 0.4% precision constrains the parameter space of new physics models with extended Higgs sector, a fourth generation of quarks and leptons or sterile neutrinos. Searches for heavy neutrino mass states and the dark photon in the ∼ 100 MeV/c(2) mass range based on samples collected in 2003-2007 are in progress and prospects will be discussed. The NA62 experiment, starting in 2014, will search for a range of lepton number and lepton flavour violating decays of the charged kaon and the neutral pion at improved sensitivities down to ∼ 10(-12), which will probe new physics scenarios involving heavy Majorana neutrinos or R-parity violating SUSY.

Abstract: The Kaon physics program at CERN and in Europe will be presented. I will first give a short review of recent results form the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments, with special emphasis to the measurement of RK , the ratio of Kaon leptonic decays rates, K → eν and K → μν, using the full minimum bias data sample collected in 2007-2008. The main subject of the talk will be the study of the highly suppressed decay K → πνν. While its rate can be predicted with minimal theoretical uncertainty in the Standard Model (BR ∼ 8 × 10−11), the smallness of BR and the challenging experimental signature make it very difficult to measure. The branching ratio for this decay is thus a sensitive probe of the flavour sector of the SM. The aim of NA62 is the measurement of the K → πνν BR with ∼ 10% precision in two years of data taking. This will require the observation of 10K decays in the experiment’s fiducial volume, as well as the use of high-performance systems for precision tracking, particle identification, and photon vetoing. These aspects of the experiment will also allow NA62 to carry out a rich program of searches for lepton flavour and/or number violating K decays. Data taking will start in October 2014. The physics prospects and the status of the construction and commissioning of the NA62 experiment will be presented. In the last part of the talk I will report on Kaon physics results and prospects from other experiments at CERN (e.g. LHCb) and in Europe (e.g. KLOE and KLOE-2) and briefly mention the status in US.

Abstract: The NA48/2 and NA62 collaborations report on recent results, current status, and prospects of kaon physics at the CERN-SPS. The NA62 collaborations aims to measure the decay [Formula: see text] with an uncertainty of 10% or better. The NA62 detector and preliminary results from a pilot run in 2014 are presented. In addition, recent results of the NA48/2 collaboration are reported. A search for Dark Photons has been performed in [Formula: see text] decays via the kaon decays [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. No dark photon signal was observed and new upper limits on the mixing parameter [Formula: see text] and the dark photon mass were computed. We also report the first observation of the kaon decay [Formula: see text].

Abstract: We report results from the analysis of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \pi^{-} e^{\pm} \nu$ (Ke4) decay by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS, based on the total statistics of 1.13 million decays collected in 2003-2004. The hadronic form factors in the S- and P-wave and their variation with energy are obtained. The phase difference between the S- and P-wave states of the $\pi \pi$ system is accurately measured and allows a precise determination of $a_{0}^{0}$ and $a_{0}^{2}$, the I=0 and I=2 S-wave $\pi \pi$ scattering lengths: $a_{0}^{0} = 0.2220 \pm 0.0128_{stat} \pm 0.0050_{syst} \pm 0.0037_{th}, a_{0}^{2}$ = $-0.0432 \pm 0.0086_{stat} \pm 0.0034_{syst} \pm 0.0028_{th}.$ Combination of this result with the other NA48/2 measurement obtained in the study of $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0} \pi^{\pm}$ decays brings an improved determination of $a_{0}^{0}$ and the first precise experimental measurement of $a_{0}^{2}$, providing a stringent test of Chiral Perturbation Theory predictions and lattice QCD calculations. Using constraints based on analyticity and chiral symmetry, even more precise values are obtained: $a_{0}^{0} = 0.2196 \pm 0.0028_{stat} \pm 0.0020_{syst}$ and $a_{0}^{2} = -0.0444 \pm 0.0007_{stat} \pm 0.0005_{syst} \pm 0.0008_{ChPT}$.

Abstract: This Letter reports on a new high precision measurement of the form factors of the KL → π± μ∓ νμ decay. The data sample of about 2.3 × 106 events was recorded in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. Studying the Dalitz plot density we measured a linear, λ+′ = (20.5 ± 2.2stat ± 2.4syst) × 10-3, and a quadratic, λ+″ = (2.6 ± 0.9stat ± 1.0syst) × 10-3 term in the power expansion of the vector form factor. No evidence was found for a second order term for the scalar form factor; the linear slope was determined to be λ0 = (9.5 ± 1.1stat ± 0.8syst) × 10-3. Using a linear fit our results were: λ+ = (26.7 ± 0.6stat ± 0.8syst) × 10-3 and λ0 = (11.7 ± 0.7stat ± 1.0syst) × 10-3. A pole fit of the form factors yields: mV = (905 ± 9stat ± 17syst) MeV / c2 and mS = (1400 ± 46stat ± 53syst) MeV / c2. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the ratio of the decay rates Γ (KL → π+ π-) / Γ (KL → π± e∓ ν), denoted as ΓK 2 π / ΓK e 3. The analysis is based on data taken during a dedicated run in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. Using a sample of 47 000 K2 π and five million Ke 3 decays, we find ΓK 2 π / ΓK e 3 = (4.835 ± 0.022stat . ± 0.016syst .) × 10-3. From this we derive the branching ratio of the CP violating decay KL → π+ π- and the CP violation parameter | η+ - |. Excluding the CP conserving direct photon emission component KL → π+ π- γ, we obtain the results BR (KL → π+ π-) = (1.941 ± 0.019) × 10-3 and | η+ - | = (2.223 ± 0.012) × 10-3. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The decay rate of the long-lived neutral K meson into the e +e -e +e - final state has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using data collected in 1998 and 1999, a total of 200 events has been observed with negligible background. This observation corresponds to a branching ratio of Br(K L→ e +e -e +e -)=(3.30±0.24 stat±0.23 syst±0.10 norm) ×10 -8. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Using data taken during the year 2000 with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS, a search for the CP violating decay KS→3π0 has been performed. From a fit to the lifetime distribution of about 4.9 million reconstructed K0/K̄0→3π0 decays, the CP violating amplitude η000=A(KS→3π0)/ A(KL→3π0) has been found to be Re(η000)=-0.002±0.011±0.015 and Im(η000)=-0.003±0. 013±0.017. This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of Br(KS→3π0)

Abstract: We present a measurement of the relative branching ratio of the decay KL -> pi e nu gamma (Ke3gamma) with respect to KL-> pi e nu (gamma) (Ke3+Ke3gamma) decay. The result is based on observation of 19 000 Ke3gamma and 5.6 x 10^6 Ke3 decays. The value of the branching ratio is Br(Ke3gamma, Egamma^*>30 MeV,theta(e,gamma)^*>20^o)/Br(Ke3)= (0.964+-0.008+0.011-0.009)%. This result agrees with theoretical predictions but is at variance with a recently published result., 13 pages, 7 figures. submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the branching ratio R of the decay K L→ pi;±e∓ν, denoted as Ke3, relative to all charged KL decays with two tracks, based on data taken with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. We measure R=0.4978±0. 0035. From this we derive the Ke3 branching fraction and the weak coupling parameter |Vus| in the CKM matrix. We obtain |Vus|f+(0)=0. 2146±0.0016, where f+(0) is the vector form factor in the Ke3 decay. © 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The KL → π+π-e +e- and KS → π+π -e+e- decay modes have been studied in detail using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Based on the data collected during the 1998 and 1999 run periods, a sample of 1162 KL → π +π-e+e- candidates has been observed with an expected background level of 36.9 events, yielding the branching ratio measurement BR(KL → π+π -e+e-) = (3.08 ± 0.20) × 10 -7. The distribution of events in the sinφ cosφ variable, where φ is the angle between the π+π- and the e+e- decay planes in the kaon centre of mass, is found to exhibit a large CP-violating asymmetry with the value Aφ = (14.2 ± 3.6)%. For the KS → π+π -e+e- decay channel, 621 candidates have been identified in the 1999 data sample with an estimated background contribution of 0.7 event. The corresponding branching ratio has been determined to be BR(K S → π+π-e+e-) = (4.71 ± 0.32) × 10-5. The combined value of this measurement with the published 1998 result is BR(KS → π +π-e+e-) = (4.69 ± 0.30) × 10-5. No asymmetry is observed in this decay mode. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on a phenomenological description of radiative kaon decays. The form factor parameters a1/a2 and g̃M1 in the K L → π+π-e+e- direct emission process as well as the value of the K0 charge radius have been extracted from the data.

Abstract: A measurement of the K_S lifetime is presented using data recorded by the NA48 experiment at the CERN-SPS during 1998 and 1999. The K_S lifetime is derived from the ratio of decay time distributions in simultaneous, collinear K_S and K_L beams, giving a result which is approximately independent of the detector acceptance and with reduced systematic errors. The result obtained is tau_S=(0.89598 +- 0.00048 +- 0.00051)x10^(-10) s, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic., 12 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Physics Letters B

Abstract: The direct CP violation parameter $\Re(\epsilon'/\epsilon)$ has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. With 3.3 million $K_{L} \to \pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ events collected during the 1998 and 1999 running periods, a result of $\Re(\epsilon'/\epsilon) = (15.0 \pm 2.7) \times 10^{-4}$ has been obtained. The result combined with the published 1997 sample is $\Re(\epsilon'/\epsilon) = (15.3 \pm 2.6) \times 10^{-4}$. Abstract: We present the first observation of the decay KS → π+π-e+e- based upon the data collected in 1998 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. We have identified a clean sample of 56 events with negligible background contamination. Using KL → π+π-πD/0 decays as normalization sample, the branching ratio is measured to be BR(KS → π+π-e+e-) = [4,5 ± 0.7 (stat) ± 0.4(syst)] × 10-5. This result is in good agreement with the theoretical expectations from the mechanism of inner bremsstrahlung. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: The decay rate of the neutral K meson KL → e+e-γ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 6864 events has been observed with an estimated background of 10 events. The branching ratio is Γ(KL → e+e-γ)/Γ(KL → all) = (1.06 ± 0.02stat ± 0.02sys ± 0.04calc) × 10-5 The parameter αK* describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay through intermediate pseudoscalar or vector mesons was measured to be αK* = -0.36 ± 0.06stat ± 0.02sys. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We report measurements of charm particle production asymmetries from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E687. An asymmetry in the rate of production of charm versus anticharm particles is expected to arise primarily from fragmentation effects. We observe statistically significant asymmetries in the photoproduction of D+, D*+ and D0 mesons and find small (but statistically weak) asymmetries in the production of the D+s meson and the A+c baryon. Our inclusive photoproduction asymmetries are compared to predictions from nonperturbative models of charm quark fragmentation.

Abstract: New measurements of the η and K0 masses have been performed using decays to 3π0 with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using symmetric decays to reduce systematic effects, the results M(η) = 547.843 ± 0.051 MeV/c2 and M(K0) = 497.625 ± 0.031 MeV/c2 were obtained. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
