Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess, using the CDR Wireless®, the effect of different exposure times on caries detection and pixel intensity values. Materials and Methods: Forty teeth were x-rayed using a Schick CDR Wireless sensor at eight different exposure times – 0.06, 0.10, 0.13, 0.16, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, and 0.32 s. Four observers evaluated the images for presence of carious lesions scoring proximal surfaces of each tooth on a 5-point scale. Scores were compared to histological sections of the teeth. Accuracy was evaluated by means of ROC curve analysis. Radiographs of an aluminum step wedge were obtained using the same eight exposure times. Pixel intensity measurements were obtained, and mean pixel values were statistically analyzed using linear regression. Results: The Az for each exposure time varied from 0.53 to 0.62. Two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test demonstrated that the exposure time of 0.25 s presented the best result and was significantly higher than 0.30 s and 0.35 s. In regard to mean pixel values, two different behaviors were observed, and the exposure time of 0.20 s presented mean pixel values in both phases. Conclusion: The performance of the exposure times from 0.06 s to 0.25 s was satisfactory for proximal caries detection, and 0.25 s is the best as indicated for this finality. Clinical Relevance: Considering that a reduction of exposure time represents a reduction of patient exposure dose, and this reduction cannot neglect image quality, the behavior of any digital system must be carefully evaluated.

To evaluate the performance of conventional radiography and photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plate in the detection of simulated internal root resorption (IRR) lesions in early stages.Twenty single-rooted teeth were X-rayed before and after having a simulated IRR early lesion. Three imaging systems were used: Kodak InSight dental film and two PSPs digital systems, Digora Optime and VistaScan. The digital images were displayed on a 20.1″ LCD monitor using the native software of each system, and the conventional radiographs were evaluated on a masked light box. Two radiologists were asked to indicate the presence or absence of IRR and, after two weeks, all images were re-evaluated. Cohen's kappa coefficient was calculated to assess intra- and interobserver agreement. The three imaging systems were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test.For interexaminer agreement, overall kappa values were 0.70, 0.65 and 0.70 for conventional film, Digora Optima and VistaScan, respectively. Both the conventional and digital radiography presented low sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values with no significant difference between imaging systems (p = .0725).The performance of conventional and PSP was similar in the detection of simulated IRR lesions in early stages with low accuracy.

Purpose To assess bone microarchitecture in maxillary sites grafted with autogenous or xenogenous grafts as well as to demonstrate the usefulness of microCT in dental implant research. Materials and Methods Samples (n = 12) consisting of titanium fixation screws covered by at least 0.5–1 mm of human bone were obtained from 17 sites grafted with autogenous or xenogenous materials and prepared for microCT scanning and conventional histology. Bone histomorphometric parameters were evaluated in three distinct regions (graft region, transitional region, and native bone region). Three-dimensional (3D) bone-to-implant contact (BIC) calculation was performed using microCT data. Histological sections were used to calculate two-dimensional (2D) BIC percentages, which were compared with values obtained from 2D microCT images. Results Histomorphometric parameters varied according to the type of graft used, but sites reconstructed with autogenous bone showed higher mean values in general. In autograft samples, indices for parameters such as Tb.Th and Tb.Sp were significantly different when the native bone region was compared to the graft region. While a higher mean 3D BIC was found in the native bone region for both graft materials, significant BIC differences were absent when graft types were compared. The 2D BIC percentages obtained from histological and microCT images were similar. Conclusions Autografts outperformed the xenogenous material used in this study concerning the histomorphometric parameters assessed. While graft type did not seem to influence 3D BIC, the native bone region showed the highest BIC percentages when compared to the other regions in both graft groups. In addition, 2D BIC ratios were similar regardless of graft material or image source (histological sections x microCT slices). Taken together, our findings suggest that microCT is an effective tool for 2D and 3D histomorphometric and BIC assessments in dental implant research.

ResumoObjetivoVerificar por meio de tomografias lineares sagitais corrigidas a posição condilar em máxima intercuspidação e em retrusão máxima obtidas pela técnica do arco gótico de Gysi e, se existem diferenças entre elas, em pacientes classe I de Angle.MétodosForam selecionados 20 voluntários, 6 homens e 14 mulheres, assintomáticos, completamente dentados, com padrão oclusal classe I de Angle e faixa etária entre 20‐30 anos de idade. Após anamnese e exame clínico foram submetidos a moldagens e seus modelos montados em articulador semiajustável. Sobre os modelos, foram confeccionados os dispositivos de registro intraoral, os quais foram posicionados na boca para a obtenção do traçado do arco gótico, utilizando‐se como referência o vértice do mesmo para a obtenção da posição de retrusão máxima. The objective of this study is to compare the ability of panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting anatomical variations of the mandibular canal and mental foramen.One hundred twenty-seven preoperative panoramic and CBCT images were evaluated. Two oral and maxillofacial radiologists investigated the presence of bifid mandibular canals and/or additional mental foramina on the right, left, or both sides of the mandible. Intra- and interobserver reliability was determined using Cohen's kappa coefficient. McNemar's test compared the prevalence of mandibular anatomical variations between panoramic radiography and CBCT. The significance level was set at 0.05.Additional mental foramen and bifid mandibular canal were detected in 1.2 and 7.4 % of the panoramic radiographs and 7.4 and 9.8 % of the CBCT images, respectively. The incidence of anatomical variations on the mandibular canal was not significantly different between both imaging modalities (P 0.05).Although CBCT provides better viewing of anatomical structures, including location, shape, and relationship with the surrounding area, panoramic radiography is a conventional imaging modality that can be used in the study of the bifid mandibular canals.

To assess the image quality of the mandibular third molar region using different milliamperage (mA) settings of cone-beam computed tomography. Twelve dry mandibles with impacted third molars were scanned with a Kodak 9000 unit (Kodak Dental Systems, Carestream Health, Rochester, NY, USA) using different mA settings (2, 4, 6.3, 8, 10, 12, and 15 mA). Two oral radiologists evaluated the images. They classified the tooth root, periodontal space, lamina dura, trabecular bone, mandibular canal, and overall image quality as excellent, good, poor, or inadequate for diagnosis. Statistical analyses were performed by one-way ANOVA with a post hoc Tukey test to investigate the influence of the mA settings in the image quality of the structures analyzed. The significance level was set at 5 %. The 15 and 12 mA settings provided the highest mean values for all the evaluated criteria, with significant differences from the values for the other mA settings. The 10, 8, and 6.3 mA settings showed no significant differences in relation to tooth root and periodontal space. For the other evaluated criteria, no significant differences were observed for the 10 and 8 mA settings. The 4 and 2 mA settings gave the lowest mean values. The best low-dose protocol with good image quality was the 10 mA setting. Lower dose protocols with 8 and 6.3 mA settings can also be used for these purposes, but caution is necessary because of increased image noise.

INTRODUCAO: A proximidade das raizes com o seio maxilar pode criar uma variedade de riscos. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a relacao entre as raizes dos dentes higidos com o seio maxilar, assim como com a ocorrencia de doencas sinusais. METODO: Tres radiologistas analisaram 109 imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe conico (TCFC). O teste Kappa avaliou a concordância intra e interexaminadores. Os testes de Qui-quadrado e Razao de Prevalencia foram utilizados para testar a hipotese de que raizes de dentes higidos dentro do seio maxilar favorecem a ocorrencia doencas sinusais (nivel de significância = 0,01). RESULTADOS: A concordância intra e interexaminadores variou de boa a excelente. O teste Qui-quadrado mostrou uma diferenca estatisticamente significante (p = 0,006) entre as raizes dentarias dentro do seio maxilar patologico (6,09%) e aquelas dentro do seio normal (3,43%). O teste de Razao de Prevalencia mostrou uma ocorrencia de raizes dentarias dentro de seios patologicos estatisticamente maior do que dentro de seios normais (p < 0,0001). As raizes dentro do seio maxilar foram encontradas 1,82 vezes mais associadas a seios patologicos. CONCLUSAO: Raizes dentarias dentro do seio maxilar sao quase duas vezes mais associadas a seios patologicos do que a seios normais. Dentes higidos que tem raizes dentro do seio maxilar podem induzir uma resposta inflamatoria da mucosa sinusal. Suspeita-se que procedimentos odontologicos possam agravar tal situacao.

A radiographic interpretation is essential to the diagnosis of invasive cervical resorption (ICR) and the difficulty in distinguishing this lesion from internal root resorption has been highlighted in the literature. This paper reports the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the diagnosis of ICR. The cases reports describe how CBCT can be used to make a differential diagnosis and also show that the use of this technology can provide relevant information on the location and nature of root resorption, which conventional radiographs cannot. As a result, the root canal treatment was not initially considered. The patients will be monitored and will undergo a scan after a short period of time to detect any small changes. It was observed that both cases benefited from CBCT in the diagnosis of ICR, because this imaging modality determined the real extent of resorption and possible points of communication with the periodontal space. A interpretação radiográfica é essencial para o diagnóstico da reabsorção cervical invasiva (RCI) e a dificuldade em distingui-la da reabsorção radicular interna tem sido destacada na literatura. Este trabalho relata o uso da tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) no diagnóstico da RCI. Os casos descrevem como a TCFC pode ser utilizada no diagnóstico diferencial e relatam também como esta tecnologia pode providenciar relevantes informações sobre a localização e natureza das reabsorções radiculares, limitadas pelas radiografias convencionais. Como resultado, o tratamento do canal radicular não foi inicialmente considerado. Os pacientes serão acompanhados e após curto período de tempo novos exames tomográficos serão realizados no intuito de detectar pequenas alterações. Observa-se que ambos os casos beneficiaram-se com o uso da TCFC no diagnóstico de RCI, pois esta modalidade de imagem determinou a real extensão da reabsorção e possíveis pontos de comunicação com o espaço periodontal.

This study aimed to assess the reliability of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in determining the surgical risk of the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle in extractions of third molars.The sample comprised thirty-three individuals (63 third molars) who underwent preoperative evaluation by MDCT before extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. MDCT was used to determine the relationship between the roots of the third molars and the mandibular canal, and the course of the mandibular canal. Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) exposure and the presence of hemorrhage were analyzed after removal of the teeth. IAN neurosensory deficit was recorded after 7 days. Clinical and MDCT findings were compared using Fisher's exact test (P0.05).There was a statistically significant association between IAN exposure and the tomographic relationship between the roots of third molars and the mandibular canal (P = 0.015). Conventionally, all cases of IAN neurosensory deficit and hemorrhage occurred when the roots of the third molar presented in an at-risk relationship with the mandibular canal, however, this association was not statistically significant (P0.05). A statistically significant association was found between the lingual course of the mandibular canal and IAN exposure (P = 0.03).MDCT is an effective tool for determination of the surgical risk to the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle in extraction of mandibular third molars.

El cóndilo mandibular bífido es una condición rara, observada frecuentemente como hallazgo radiográfico, caracterizada por la división de la cabeza de la mandíbula. Su prevalencia varía entre 0,0018% a 0,3%, donde múltiples causas han sido sugeridas en la literatura para justificar su desarrollo, sin embargo no hay concordancia entre los estudios acerca del factor causal principal. El objetivo de este artículo es relatar un caso de cóndilo mandibular bífido observado en una mujer de 21 años de edad, el cual fue revelado por una radiografía panorámica donde se observó hipoplasia del cóndilo mandibular izquierdo, con presencia de una aparente calcificación en la región de la articulación temporomandibular izquierda; otros exámenes convencionales fueron realizados (radiografía postero-anterior, con apoyo frente-nasion en boca abierta, transcraniana y panorámica), sin embargo, apenas en la tomografía computarizada de haz cónico, fue posible obtener el diagnóstico de cóndilo mandibular bífido.

The aims of this study were (1) to compare the accuracy of the detection of approximal enamel caries lesions using three intraoral storage phosphor plate digital systems and one conventional film-based radiographic system; and (2) to determine whether there is a correlation between the histological and radiographic measurements of enamel caries.160 approximal surfaces were radiographed under standardized conditions using three storage phosphor stimulable systems (DenOptix and Digora FMX with white and blue plates), and one film system (Insight film). 17 observers scored the images for the presence and depth of caries using a 4-point scale. The presence of caries was validated histologically (gold standard). Two-way analysis of variance was used to test the differences in sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracy (TP + TN). The data from the radiographic and histological measurements were statistically analysed by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.Two-way analysis of variance and the post hoc t-test demonstrated that Digora (white plate) had higher specificity and overall accuracy values than DenOptix (P = 0.021); there was no statistically significant difference among the other imaging modalities (P0.05). There was no significant correlation between the histological depth measurements and the radiographic measurements from Digora (blue plate) (P = 0.43), Digora (white plate) (P = 0.15), DenOptix (P = 0.17) and Insight film (P = 0.06).The results suggest that (1) the performance of the three storage phosphor image plate systems was similar to that of the Insight film for detection of approximal enamel caries, and (2) the increase in histological depth of enamel caries was not significantly correlated with radiographic measurements.

The aim of this study was to assess the radioprotective effects of sodium selenite on parotid glands in rats by ultrastructural analysis of acinar cells. Four experimental groups were assessed; control, irradiated, selenium, and selenium/irradiated. The sodium selenite dose was 0.5 mg/kg, administered intraperitoneally 24 h before irradiation in the head and neck region with a single 15-Gy dose of gamma radiation. At 4, 8, 12, 48 and 72 h after irradiation, all animals were sacrificed and the parotid glands were removed. Radiation caused cellular changes from 4 h, and the organelles that presented the greatest alterations were the mitochondria and the secretion glands; nuclear alterations were also observed. Sodium selenite was found to have a radioprotective action, as the selenium/irradiated group presented with less damage when compared to the irradiated group. However, sodium selenite caused cellular alterations that were evident after 8 h, but with less damage when compared to those caused by radiation, which demonstrates a favorable risk-benefit for its use as a radioprotector. Thus, this research shows that sodium selenite has an effective radioprotective action in the parotid gland, which may contribute to the reduction of the adverse effects brought by the radiotherapy. This study evaluated the radioprotective effect of sodium selenite on the bone repair process in tibiae of female rats. For such purpose, 100 female Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus, albinus) were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=25), according to the treatment received: administration of distilled water (control); administration of sodium selenite; gamma radiation; and administration of sodium selenite plus gamma radiation. A bone defect was prepared on both tibiae of all animals. Three days after surgery, the gamma radiation and selenium/gamma radiation groups received 8 Gy gamma rays on the lower limbs. Five animals per group were sacrificed 7, 14, 21, 28 days after surgery for evaluation of the repair process by bone volumetric density analysis. The 5 animals remaining in each group were sacrificed 45 days postoperatively for examination of the mature bone by scanning electron microscopy. Based on all analyzed parameters, the results of the present study suggest that sodium selenite exerted a radioprotective effect in the bone repair of tibia of irradiated rats. Este estudo avaliou o efeito radioprotetor de selenito de sódio no processo de reparação óssea em tíbias de ratas. Para isto, 100 ratas Wistar (Rattus norvegicus, albinus) foram aleatoriamente divididas em 4 grupos (n=25), de acordo com o tratamento recebido: administração de água destilada (controle); administração de selenito de sódio; irradiação gama; e administração de selenito de sódio mais irradiação gama. Um defeito ósseo foi realizado em ambas as tíbias de todos os animais. Três dias após a cirurgia, apenas os animais dos grupos irradiado e selênio/irradiado receberam 8 Gy de radiação gama na região dos membros inferiores. Cinco animais por grupo foram sacrificados 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após a cirurgia para avaliação do processo de reparo ósseo pela análise da densidade óssea volumétrica. Os cinco animais remanescentes em cada grupo foram sacrificados aos 45 dias do pós-operatório para avaliação da maturação óssea por meio da microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Baseado em todos os parâmetros analisados, os resultados do presente estudo sugerem que o selenito de sódio exerceu efeito radioprotetor no reparo ósseo de tíbias de ratas irradiados.

O cisto nasolabial é um cisto não odontogênico raro que se desenvolve na região inferior da asa nasal, com patogênese ainda incerta. Esta lesão, que possui crescimento lento e dimensões variáveis (1,5-3cm), caracteriza-se clinicamente por uma tumefação flutuante na região do sulco nasolabial ao redor da asa do nariz, causando uma elevação do lábio superior. Seu diagnóstico pode ser feito basicamente pelo quadro clínico e, se necessário, complementando-se com exames auxiliares por imagens. O presente trabalho relata o caso de uma paciente do sexo feminino de 48 anos, que se queixava da presença de uma massa consistente na região da asa esquerda do nariz e cujas características clínicas eram compatíveis com cisto nasolabial. As imagens de TC demonstraram uma formação expansiva com densidade de tecido mole, localizadas na região nasal esquerda medindo cerca de 1,2cm de diâmetro e apresentando contornos nítidos e bem definidos e densidade homogenia ao redor de 50 UH. Já as imagens de RM mostraram uma lesão de aspecto circular localizada em tecido mole, apresentando hiperintensidade nas imagens ponderadas em T1, T2 e no recurso de supressão da gordura, sendo a hipótese diagnóstico de cisto nasolabial, confirmado pelo exame histopatológico depois da cirurgia.

SummaryThe nasolabial cyst is an uncommon non-odontogenic cyst that develops in the lower region of the nasal ala; its pathogenesis is uncertain. This lesion grows slowly and measures between 1.5 and 3 cm; it is characterized clinically by a floating tumefaction in the nasolabial sulcus, which elevates the upper lip. The diagnosis is based on the clinical findings and, if necessary, image exams. This paper reports a case of a white 48-year-old Brazilian female patient that presented a firm tumor in the left ala of the nose; the clinical features suggested a nasolabial cyst. CT scans revealed an expanding tumor with soft tissue density located in the left ala of the nose. It measured 1.2 cm in diameter and had a clear and well-defined outline; its homogeneous density was about 50 HU. MR images revealed a circular lesion located in soft tissue; T1 and T2 weighted signals were hyperintense, as were images after fat suppression. The diagnosis was a nasolabial cyst, which was confirmed by histopathology after surgery.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the radioprotector effect of sodium selenite on the ultrastructure of submandibular glands in rats. Fifty-seven male albino Wistar rats were randomized to 4 groups: control, irradiated, sodium selenite and irradiated/sodium selenite. The animals in the sodium selenite and irradiated/sodium selenite groups received intraperitoneal injections of sodium selenite (0.5 mg/kg body weight) 24 h before irradiation. The animals belonging to the irradiated and irradiated/sodium selenite groups were submitted to 15 Gy of gamma radiation in the head and neck region. The submandibular glands were removed at 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h after irradiation. The ionizing radiation induced damage to the secretory cells, especially the serous cells, right from the first period. Vacuolization, lysis of cytoplasmic inclusions and nuclear alterations occurred. The sodium selenite group also presented cellular alterations in the study periods, but with less damage compared to that caused by radiation. There was greater similarity between the irradiated/sodium selenite group and the control group than with the other groups treated in all study periods. Despite the alterations observed in the sodium selenite group, sodium selenite presented a radioprotective action on the secretory cells of submandibular glands.

This study aimed at evaluating the bone repair process in ovariectomized rats submitted to an irradiation procedure. For this purpose, one hundred rats were randomly divided in four experimental groups: control, ovariectomized, irradiated and irradiated/ovariectomized. A bone defect was made on all animals' tibias. Three days after surgery, only irradiated and irradiated/ovariectomized rats received 8 Gy of gamma rays on the lower limbs region. The animals were sacrificed 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after surgery in order to assess the repair process. It was possible to observe a delay in the bone repair process in the irradiated/ovariectomized group, in which there was a remarkable association between estrogen deficiency and ionizing radiation resulting in the reduction of newly formed bone production, thus accelerating the resorption process. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o processo de reparo ósseo em ratas ovariectomizadas submetidas ao procedimento de irradiação. Para isto, cem ratas foram aleatoriamente divididas em quatro grupos experimentais: controle, ovariectomizado, irradiado e ovariectomizado/irradiado. Um defeito ósseo foi confeccionado nas tíbias de todos os animais. Três dias após a cirurgia, apenas os animais pertencentes aos grupos irradiado e ovariectomizado/irradiado receberam 8 Gy de radiação gama na região dos membros inferiores. Os animais foram sacrificados 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após a cirurgia. Foi possível observar um atraso no processo de reparo ósseo nos animais do grupo ovariectomizado/irradiado, no qual houve uma marcante associação entre deficiência de estrógeno e radiação ionizante, resultando na redução da produção de osso neoformado, acelerando o processo de reabsorção.

En la actualidad existe una gran aceptación por la medicina y la odontología, en que la práctica clínica debe ser "basada en evidencia científica", tanto como sea posible. Es por eso que múltiples trabajos se han publicado orientados a disminuirlas dosis de radiación en los diferentes tipos de modalidades imaginológicas usados en la odontología, ya que el mayor efecto de las radiaciones, sobre todo en niños, nos obliga a tomar medidas necesarias para racionalizar su uso, especialmente con la tomografía computarizada Cone Beam (TCCB), método que aporta las mayores dosis en la odontología. Esta revisión fue escrita utilizando un enfoque de este tipo con el propósito de racionalizar la dosis de radiación en nuestros pacientes. El equipo del proyecto SEDENTEXCT recopiló y analizó relevantes publicaciones en la literatura, pautas que han demostrado su eficacia en el pasado, para llegar a formular recomendaciones que contribuyan a la optimización del uso de las radiaciones ionizantes enla odontología, ayudando de esa manera a ver con otros ojos la dosis recibida por los pacientes, y con la presente se recomienda tener en cuenta dicho documento para poder prescribir de manera más adecuada los exámenes complementarios que usamos diariamente. There is now wide acceptance in medicine and dentistry that clinical practice should be as "evidence-based" as possible. Which is why many works have been published aimed at reducing radiation doses in different types of imaging modalities in dentistry, and that the major effect of radiation especially in children requires us to take necessary steps to rationalize their use especially the Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) method that provides the highest doses in dentistry. This review was written using this approach because of the purpose of streamlining the radiation dose in our patients. SEDENTEXCT team collected and analyzed relevant publications in the literature, guidelines that have proven effective in the past to reach recommendations, which can contribute to optimizing the use of ionizing radiation in dentistry, helping to see with others eyes the dose received by our patients. Nuevas técnicas van acompañando la evolución de la odontología y buscan superar obstáculos presentes en la actualidad. El prototipado rápido (PR) fue insertado en el medio odontológico con el propósito de auxiliar procedimientos, minimizar riesgos y disminuir el tiempo quirúrgico. A partir de exámenes tomográficos y de resonancia magnética, son creados diseños asistidos por medio de un computador específico, luego de ello son transformados en un lenguaje propio, para que a partir de ahí, estos diseños sean transformados en objetos físicos en 3 dimensiones (prototipos), fieles al modelo inicial hecho en la computadora. Existen muchas técnicas para la confección de los modelos 3D, variando el tipo de material que se añadirá, por el proceso de adición en capas. Muchas son las áreas beneficiadas por el PR; sin embargo, cirugia, implantología, prótesis y ortodoncia, asimilaron más los principios de esta técnica la cual está ayudando de manera significativa en su práctica diaria. Los beneficios del PR son numerosos, sea en la disminución de riesgos quirúrgicos, precisión de maniobras, disminución de tiempo transoperatorio, estética en los procedimientos y hasta en la comunicación entre el cirujano dentista y el paciente. Las desventajas de la técnica incluyen el elevado costo inicial y un considerable tiempo de preparación del prototipado. Lo que se viene observando es que el PR se está convirtiendo cada vez más de uso cotidiano odontológico y sus beneficios superan algunas desventajas aún persistentes. New techniques have been accompanying the development of dentistry and seek to overcome obstacles present nowadays. The Rapid Prototyping (RP) was inserted into the dentistry in order to assist procedures, minimize risk and reduce the surgical time. From Computed Tomography exams and Magnetic Resonance, are been created design assisted by a specific computer, then processed in its own language; so from there, such designs are transformed into physical objects in 3 dimensions (prototype), trusted in the initial model created in the computer. There are many techniques for production of 3D models, varying the type of material that will be added by the process of adding layers. Many areas were benefited by the PR, however Surgery, Implantology, Orthodontics and Prosthodontics, absorbed the principles of this technique which is helping significantly in their daily practice. The benefits of PR are undisputed, whether in the reduction of surgical risks, precision maneuvers, and gain time in the trans-operative period, cosmetic procedures and in the communication between the dentist and the patient. The disadvantages of the technique are also reported as high initial cost and considerable time preparing the prototype. What has been observed is that this PR is becoming increasingly present in the dental practice and the benefits are overcoming some disadvantages still persistent.

Aim:To compare the qualitative and quantitative information yielded by imaging modalities on the evaluation of the relationship between the maxillary sinus and the apices of posterior teeth.Methods:Three oral radiologists examined 109 panoramic radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images obtained from a digital archive. A total of 1,875 apices were classified according to their topographic relationship in both imaging modalities. Agreements between the two imaging techniques were examined statistically. The evaluation was repeated in 25% of the sample to statistically evaluate the intraobserver agreement, with a 30-day interval.Results:The values found in the Kappa test for qualitative assessment and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for quantitative assessment showed nearly perfect and excellent correlation, respectively. Regarding the correlation between the two images, the Kappa test in the quality assessment showed a slight correlation between the palatal roots of the right first molars and second molars. Moreover, the quantitative evaluation by ICC showed poor agreement for the palatal roots of the left first molar and second molar, as well as for the buccomesial of the right second molars and for the buccodistal of the left second molars.Conclusions:There is low correlation between panoramic radiography and CBCT when roots are in contact or above the maxillary sinus floor. A high level of agreement was observed when roots are below the maxillary sinus floor.

Objectives: The aim of this in vivo study was to compare peri-implant bone density assessed by the mean gray value of the histogram in digitized conventional radiographs and two digital subtraction images (DSI) methods: linear and logarithmic. Material and methods: Thirty-four patients were monitored by standardized periapical radiographs 1 week after surgery and 4 months later. The radiographs were digitized and manipulated by means of EMAGO® software. Linear and logarithmic DSI were obtained, and a filter was added to the logarithmic image. Control and test regions were selected and the mean value of the gray level of the histogram of these selected areas was obtained. This process was carried out in the digitized conventional radiographs (DCR) and the two methods of DSI. After that, the images were divided into two groups, with and without bone loss, and statistical analysis was performed. Results: The results indicate that differences between the jaws did not reach significance, in all the images and in the two groups with and without bone loss. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference between the radiographic density assessed in the DCR and the two methods of subtraction images. Conclusions: Monitoring of peri-implant bone density by the mean gray value of the histogram in a selected area can be assessed either by linear and logarithmic DSI or by DCR.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the radioprotective effect of vitamin E in salivary gland function, as well as analyse the total protein concentration. For this purpose 90 male rats were used and randomly divided into five experimental groups: control (I), in which animals received olive oil solution but were not irradiated; irradiated-olive oil (II), in which animals received olive oil solution and were irradiated with a single exposure dose of 15 Gy of gamma rays to the head and neck region; irradiated (III), in which animals were only irradiated with a single exposure dose of 15 Gy of gamma rays; vitamin E (IV), in which animals received alpha tocopherol acetate solution but were not irradiated; irradiated-vitamin E (V), in which animals received alpha tocopherol acetate solution before irradiation with a single exposure dose of 15 Gy gamma rays. The animals were sacrificed 4, 8 h and 30 days after the irradiation procedure. No differences were observed in salivary volumes between the groups at 4 and 8 h. At 30 days, the salivary volume in the animals pertaining to the irradiated-olive oil group was significantly reduced in relation to the control group. The only irradiated group (III) presented significantly diminished salivary volume. In the salivary composition, no significant differences were observed in the total protein content between the groups studied. It was concluded that radiation had no effect on the total protein content and that vitamin E protected the salivary function 30 days after irradiation. Thus, vitamin E can be considered as a potential radioprotective substance.

X-rays and gamma radiation delivered to the abdominal region for cancer treatment encompasses severe damage to the intestinal mucosa, which significantly impairs a patient's quality of life. To a great extent the deleterious effects of x-radiation originate from radiolysis-induced reactive oxygen species. The well-researched powerful antioxidant Pycnogenol was administered orally to rats prior to x-irradiation with 15 Gy. Histological sections of the intestines showed a dramatically better condition of the mucosal layers compared with the irradiated control animals administered water without Pycnogenol. Pycnogenol treatment significantly preserved the height and number of villi as well as the glandular layer and a diminished number of congested vases were present. No intestinal alterations were seen in control animals receiving Pycnogenol in the absence of radiation. It is concluded that Pycnogenol provides significant protection from ionizing radiation damage.

The aim of this study was to compare the sensitometric properties of Insight and Ektaspeed Plus radiographic films manually and automatically processed using fresh and depleted chemical solutions. Ten sets of each type of film were obtained (1 set = 5 films), 5 sets being manually processed and 5 sets being automatically processed. A total of 100 films (50 Ektaspeed Plus and 50 Insight film) were exposed and developed. The first two sets of each film type were developed in fresh chemicals (one set per each type of processing), on the first day of the experiment. The other sets were processed in the same progressively depleted solutions once a week until the end of experiment, which was completed within 4 weeks. Characteristic curves were constructed to compare the sensitometric properties of the films: contrast, latitude and speed. Processing solution depletion had different effects on manually and automatically developed films, which was confirmed by the changes in the form of the characteristic curves in the third week of the automatic processing and fourth week of the manual processing. Ektaspeed Plus showed 11% reduction in contrast values for manual processing and 53% for automatic processing, while Insight contrast values showed a reduction of 25% and 59%, respectively. Insight film, however, showed lesser loss of speed and lesser increase of latitude than Ektaspeed Plus. In conclusion, chemical depletion in automatic film processing was faster than in manual developing. In depleted chemicals, both types of films had an increase in latitude values and a decrease in speed and contrast. Insight was more resistant than Ektaspeed Plus to decrease in speed and latitude when processed using older chemicals, whereas contrast in Ektaspeed Plus was comparatively more stable. O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar as propriedades sensitométricas dos filmes Insight e Ektaspeed Plus processados manual e automaticamente em soluções novas e degradadas. Foram expostas 10 séries de cada tipo de filme (1 série = 5 filmes), sendo 5 séries processadas manualmente e 5, automaticamente. As primeiras duas séries de cada filme foram processadas em líquidos novos (uma série para cada tipo de processamento) e as demais foram processadas nas mesmas soluções progressivamente degradadas, uma vez por semana, até a conclusão do experimento dentro de 4 semanas. Curvas características foram construídas a fim de se comparar as propriedades sensitométricas dos filmes: contraste, latitude e sensibilidade. A degradação das soluções apresentou comportamentos distintos entre os tipos de processamento, o que pôde ser visto pelo padrão das curvas características que apresentaram modificações em sua forma, na terceira semana no processamento automático e na quarta semana no processamento manual. O filme Ektaspeed Plus apresentou uma redução de 11% nos seus valores de contraste no processamento manual e 53% no automático, já o Insight, 25% e 59%, respectivamente. O filme Insight, no entanto, apresentou uma menor perda de sensibilidade e um menor aumento de latitude. Concluiu-se que a degradação é mais rápida no processamento automático do que no manual. Em soluções degradadas, ambos os filmes apresentaram aumento de latitude e redução de contraste e sensibilidade. O Insight foi mais resistente em relação à latitude e sensibilidade, mas quanto ao contraste, o Ektaspeed Plus se apresentou mais estável.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a ação radioprotetora do selenito de sódio no processo de reparação tecidual. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Ratos Wistar foram submetidos a procedimento cirúrgico para a realização de ferida na região dorsal. Os animais foram divididos em quatro grupos experimentais: controle, selênio, irradiado e selênio-irradiado. Os grupos selênio e selênio-irradiado receberam 2,0 mg/kg de selenito de sódio, 48 horas após a cirurgia. Os grupos irradiado e selênio-irradiado foram submetidos à irradiação em dose única de 6 Gy, administrada somente nas bordas das feridas. Após 4, 7, 13 e 21 dias do procedimento cirúrgico, os animais foram sacrificados e avaliados por meio de análise morfológica, histoquímica e birrefringência do tecido. RESULTADOS: O aspecto estrutural e morfológico, assim como a qualidade do tecido e sua maturação através da quantidade e disposição dos feixes de fibras colágenas, juntamente com o seu grau de orientação macromolecular, permitiu observar a presença de intenso retardo provocado pela irradiação, bem como o efeito radioprotetor do selenito de sódio no processo de reparação. CONCLUSÃO: Dentro das condições experimentais utilizadas, o selenito de sódio apresentou-se como radioprotetor eficaz, visto que o processo de reparação no grupo selênio-irradiado comportou-se, histologicamente, semelhante ao grupo controle.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the radioprotective effect of sodium selenite in the tissue repair process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats submitted to a surgical procedure to produce a wound in the dorsal region. These animals were then divided in four experimental groups: control, selenium, irradiated and selenium-irradiated. The selenium and selenium-irradiated groups received sodium selenite (2.0 mg/kg), 48 hours after surgery. The irradiated and selenium-irradiated groups received a single dose of 6 Gy, administered only in the borders of the wound. The animals were sacrificed after 4, 7, 13 and 21 days after surgery and morphological, histochemical and tissue birefringence analyses were performed. RESULTS: The structural and morphologic aspects, as well as the quality and maturation of the tissue assessed by the amount, arrangement and molecular orientation of the collagen fibers, showed a marked delay in wound healing caused by radiation and that sodium selenite has a radioprotective effect on the tissue repair process. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that sodium selenite is an efficient radioprotector given the fact that tissue repair process in the selenium-irradiated group was histologically similar to the control group.

Esta pesquisa teve por finalidade avaliar a ação da vitamina E como radioprotetora no processo de reparação tecidual em ratos, após sofrerem um procedimento cirúrgico, que consistiu da produção de uma ferida na região dorsal anterior. Os animais foram divididos em cinco grupos: grupo CO (controle) - constituído de animais em que foi produzida somente a ferida; grupo VE - pré-tratamento com vitamina E (90 UI); grupo IR - irradiação três dias após a cirurgia; grupo VEIR - pré-tratamento com 90 UI de vitamina E e irradiação de suas bordas três dias após a cirurgia; grupo OIR - pré-tratamento com óleo de oliva e irradiação de suas bordas três dias após a cirurgia. A ação radioprotetora da vitamina E foi avaliada pela coloração por hematoxilina-eosina para análise morfológica do tecido de granulação, aos 4, 7, 14 e 21 dias após a cirurgia. A análise dos resultados mostrou que o retardo no processo de reparação tecidual causado por 6 Gy de radiação de elétrons com feixe de 6 MeV não ocorreu no grupo de animais que recebeu vitamina E, mostrando-se esta substância efetiva como radioprotetora.

Most cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), commonly referred to as noncardiogenic strokes, occur as a result of atherosclerosis involving the common, internal and external carotids arteries, due to atheroma formation. Several factors influence atheroma formation, such as hypertension, smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, obesity and sedentary lifestyle among others. When atheromas are positioned inside the vessel lumen, they alter the flow of blood, causing the stroke. These atheromas, that are calcified plaques, can be observed in panoramic radiography. (J. O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da filtração alternativa da liga alumínio-zinco em aparelhos de raios X odontológicos, em relação ao espectro de energia dos feixes de raios X, a taxa de kerma no ar, o índice de contraste nas radiografias obtidas e a qualidade das imagens radiográficas. Este estudo foi realizado comparando-se o filtro convencional de alumínio com várias espessuras do filtro de liga alumínio-zinco, em diferentes porcentagens do elemento zinco na liga (2%, 3%, 4% e 5%). Foi utilizado um aparelho de raios X odontológico convencional, operando com 60 kVp e 70 kVp, e filmes radiográficos dos grupos D e E de sensibilidade. Foram realizadas radiografias de um "phantom" e de uma escala de densidade de alumínio. Os resultados mostraram que o uso dos filtros de liga Al-Zn resultou em um não-endurecimento dos feixes. A taxa de kerma no ar diminuiu em até 18,53%, sem alteração no contraste das radiografias e a qualidade das imagens teve uma boa aceitação pelos examinadores. A análise dos resultados nos levou a concluir que o filtro de liga Al-Zn 2%, com 1,99 mm de espessura, tensão de 60 kVp, quando usado com filme D, foi o que obteve melhor desempenho, reduzindo a taxa de kerma no ar sem variar o índice de contraste das radiografias, mantendo a qualidade da imagem aceitável para diagnóstico, sem contudo aumentar o tempo de exposição.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of alternative filtration with the aluminum-zinc alloy in dental X-ray devices, regarding the energy spectrum, dose, contrast and image quality. This study was carried out comparing the conventional aluminum filter with aluminum-zinc alloy filters of various thicknesses and with different percentages of zinc in the alloy (2, 3, 4 and 5%). A conventional X-ray device operating with 60 and 70 kVp as well as D- and E-speed films were utilized in order to obtain images of a phantom and an aluminum step wedge. The utilization of Al-Zn filters resulted in a spectrum without hardening of beams. The rate of kerma in the air decreased 18.53%, without any alteration in contrast and image quality. The results revealed that the 2% Al-Zn alloy filter with 1.99 mm of thickness, utilized with the tension of 60 kVp and D-speed film, had the best performance. It reduced the rate of kerma without varying the indices of contrast and maintained image quality at acceptable levels, without increasing the time of exposure.

The aim of the present experimental research was to investigate the effects of electron irradiation on the collagen content and on the organization of the granulation tissue of skin, in diabetic rats. In this study, 48 Wistar rats were assigned to 4 groups: control, irradiated, diabetic and irradiated diabetic. First, diabetes mellitus was induced in the last two groups, by means of a single intravenous injection of streptozotocin. Fifteen days later, all animals underwent a surgery in order to create an excisional wound on their anterior dorsal skin. On the third post-operative day, only an approximately 1-cm-wide area around the wounds was exposed to 1 Gy of 6 MeV electron beam radiation, which was delivered in a single dose. Wound healing was examined by means of polarized light microscopy at 4-, 7-, 13- and 21-day time intervals after wounding. Based upon an essentially qualitative evaluation, it was possible to conclude that local electron irradiation and diabetes' associated dysfunctions caused a decrease in the collagen content of newly-formed tissue, which was more pronounced in irradiated diabetic animals. The macromolecular organization of granulation tissue was delayed in irradiated, diabetic and irradiated diabetic animals, in relation to what was observed in control animals. O objetivo desta pesquisa experimental foi estudar os efeitos da irradiação por elétrons sobre o conteúdo de colágeno e a organização macromolecular do tecido de granulação, na pele de ratos diabéticos. Para tanto, 48 ratos da linhagem Wistar foram separados em 4 grupos: controle; irradiado; diabético e diabético irradiado. Inicialmente, a diabetes melito foi induzida, nos dois últimos grupos, por meio da administração intravenosa de estreptozotocina. Após quinze dias da indução, todos os animais foram submetidos a uma cirurgia para a produção de uma ferida excisional, na região dorsal anterior. No terceiro dia pós-operatório, aplicou-se uma dose única de 1 Gy, de feixes de elétrons com 6 MeV de energia, em uma área externa que compreendia cerca de 1 cm lateralmente às bordas das feridas. Amostras teciduais dos 4 grupos foram examinadas por microscopia de luz polarizada aos 4, 7, 13 e 21 dias pós-operatórios. Por meio de uma avaliação essencialmente qualitativa, foi possível concluir que a irradiação local por elétrons e as disfunções associadas à diabetes determinaram um decréscimo no conteúdo de colágeno do tecido neoformado, que foi mais pronunciado nos animais diabéticos irradiados. A organização macromolecular do tecido de granulação apresentou-se retardada nos animais irradiados, diabéticos e diabéticos irradiados, em comparação com os animais do grupo controle.

Objective: this study aimed to assess the radiopacity of eight composite resins recommended for class II restorations. Materials and method: hence, 2 mm thick and 4 mm in diameter test specimens were made and compared to enamel, dentin, and aluminum using four digital systems: two semi-direct by storage phosphor image plates (SPIP) - Digora™, and DenOptix™, two charged couple devices (CCD) - Sens-A-Ray™ and Computerized Dental Radiograph (CDR™), and radiographic film Kodak Insight IS-21™. The radiographs were scanned to obtain the indirect digital image, and along with direct and semi-direct digital images the radiographic densities were assessed in specific software. The pixel values from the aluminum step wedge were submitted to a linear regression from where the equivalent in millimeters for enamel, dentin, and resins were determined. Results: density means of resins were equal or superior to the means obtained for enamel in all digital systems and the conventional film. SureFil™ resin presented greater numerical radiopacity in all digital systems and the radiographic film. ALERT™ resin showed the smallest radiopacity among the studied resins in all digital systems and radiographic film. ALERT™ and Definite™ were statistically equivalent to enamel in the Sens-A-Ray™ system and in radiographic film. The remaining resins (Charisma™, FillMagic™, P60™, Prodigy™, SureFil™, and Z250™) presented higher radiopacities in comparison to enamel. Only ALERT™ presented radiopacity similar to enamel in other digital systems (CDR™, DenOptix™, and Digora™). In these digital systems, Charisma™, Definite™, FillMagic™, P60™, Prodigy™, SureFil™, and Z250™ were more radiopaque than enamel. Conclusion: all resins showed equal or higher radiopacities of enamel in all assessment systems. There was a statistical correlation between systems CDR™ and Sens-A-Ray™, and between Digora™ and DenOptix™; Sens-A-Ray™ also showed correlation with radiographic film. The percentage of density means equivalent to aluminum millimeters for enamel and dentin were 119.6% and 101.6%, respectively.

O objetivo neste estudo foi avaliar subjetivamente a qualidade de imagem de dois sistemas digitais CCD, de um sistema digital de armazenamento de fósforo, do filme digitalizado e do filme E-speed. Cinco foram os objetos de análise, que foram radiografados com 50, 60 e 70 kVp e tempos de exposição de 0,08; 0,13; 0,2; 0,4 e 0,8 s. Visando uma maior fidelidade dos resultados foram efetuadas medidas no aparelho de raios X empregado, para avaliar a relação entre tempo de exposição versus dose, tendo este apresentado uma boa reprodutibilidade nas respostas. Seis foram os avaliadores que analisaram 375 imagens utilizando uma escala de classificação de 0 a 4. Os resultados mostraram diferentes respostas entre os sistemas em análise, apontando o sistema de armazenamento de fósforo como o de melhor desempenho dentre os vários grupos de exposição empregados. Foi possível concluir que todos os sistemas estudados, excetuando o Sens-A-Ray, possuem condições de oferecer imagens em condições ideais de diagnóstico, desde que respeitadas suas latitudes.The aim of this study was to evaluate, subjectively, the image quality of two CCD digital systems, a digital storage phosphor system, a digitized film and an E-speed film. Five objects were radiographed with 50, 60 and 70 kVp, with exposure times of 0.08, 0.13, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 s. In order to maximize the fidelity of the results, the dental X-ray unit employed was submitted to an evaluation so that the relation between exposure time and dose could be established. A good reproducibility was obtained. Six evaluators analyzed 375 images, using a scoring scale which ranged from 0 to 4. The results revealed different responses, indicating that the storage phosphor system had the best performance, in the various exposures employed. However, it was possible to conclude that all systems studied, except for the Sens-A-Ray, can offer images in ideal conditions for the diagnosis, as long as their latitudes are respected.

Os autores estudaram o efeito de baixas doses de radiação de elétrons na atividade de fosfodiesterases presentes no tecido de granulação, induzido por esponja de PVC, subcutaneamente, na região dorsal de 84 ratos Wistar, divididos em dois grupos, controle e irradiado. A atividade enzimática foi avaliada segundo a evolução do tecido de granulação aos 5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 20 e 24 dias. Os animais foram irradiados com um feixe de elétrons de 6 MeV, dose de 1 Gy, 3 dias após a implantação da esponja, sendo que no momento da irradiação, foram protegidos por uma lâmina de 4 mm de chumbo, tendo sido irradiada somente a área correspondente ao local onde encontrava-se a esponja. Considerando-se a dose e o tipo de radiação empregada, pode-se concluir que houve influência direta da radiação na atividade da enzima 5’-nucleotidase e da ATPase no início do processo de reparação tecidual, aos 5 e 7 dias. Já a enzima fosfatase alcalina não sofreu a ação direta da radiação. É possível que o principal fator tenha sido danos nos constituintes celulares que são responsáveis pela formação do tecido de granulação, determinando a produção enzimática conforme a necessidade.The present study evaluated the effect of low doses of electron radiation on the activity of phosphodiesterases in granulation tissue. In order to induce growth of granulation tissue, a PVC sponge disk was introduced under the dorsal skin of 84 Wistar rats. The rats were divided in two groups, control and irradiated. The enzymatic activity was evaluated according to the evolution of the granulation tissue after 5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 20 and 24 days. Irradiation was carried out 3 days after the implantation of the sponge, by means of a linear accelerator, with energy of 6 MeV, and dose of 1.0 Gy. The results of this study showed that 5’-nucleotidase and ATPase had their activity directly affected by irradiation only in the beginning of the tissue repairing process. Alkaline phosphatase did not suffer any direct effect of irradiation. It is possible that the main factor has been the damage of the cellular components responsible for the growth of granulation tissue, which determine the production of enzymes according to the necessity.
