Pregnant female mice of the strain AB-Y were subjected to psychological and physiological stress during the last two weeks of pregnancy. Stress was provided by subjecting the animals to bright lights, confinement, and temperature increase. The male offspring of these stressed mice were then compared with normal control males of non-stressed mothers to test for deviance in male sexual behavior of the prenatally stressed males. The two groups were tested by placing them with estrus lure female mice and observing the male sexual behavioral characteristics displayed. It was found that the prenatally stressed males showed lower levels of male sexual behavior than the control males.

The colonial morphology and molecular composition of 26 phenotypes of Contagious Equine Metritis Organisms (CEMO) were studied by stereomicroscopic examination and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Twenty-three phenotypes had colonies that were round and smooth. Three phenotypes had colonies that were round and smooth with occasional fimbria projecting from the edge of the colonies. The consistency of all the colonies varied from friable and butyrous to viscid. Based on external observation in reflected and transmitted light, the 26 phenotypes were separated into 3 different types of colonial variants based on opacity. The major stained bands in the page profiles of all 26 phenotypes were observed and recorded. The stained bands were observed in polyacrylamide 125 gels that were prepared with CBB stain, silver stain, Isurface labeling, and Immuno-electroblotting procedures. Several differences between the polyacrylamide gel profiles of these strains were observed.

One current hypothesis is that a direct correlation exists between the concentration of aminoglycoside in the hair cells and destruction of the hair cells. The results of this experiment indicated that there were no detectable differences in drug concentrations between the basal portions and the apical portions of the organ of Corti. Interpretation of these results suggests that the preferential loss of hair cells is not due to differences in drug concentrations between the basal and apical hair cells.

A transformed colony of E. coli, containing this plasmid was cloned and cultured. The general procedure began with the cell culturing phase in order to achieve a maximum cell and plasmid count, to attain a high copy number. The next step was to lyse the cells and separate all of the DNA from the cellular debris. Then the plasmid DNA was separated from the other forms of DNA. The plasmids were observed using an agarose gel where the DNA could be confirmed as that of plasmids. Finally, the plasmids were restricted, run on a gel and then electroeluted. Electroelution was aided by the use of ethidium bromide intercalation and observation with UV light. A special multi-restriction process was performed to arrive at absolute confirmation of the plasmid. Through a series of biochemical techniques this plasmid was amplified, purified and restricted with type II restriction endonucleases.

At five minute intervals, we determined the average cell buoyant density and the peak frequency cell volume to calculate the average cell mass at each of these time intervals. We found that the average yeast cell increases in mass at an exponential rate.

Friend virus (FV) is a murine leukemia virus. Previous studies have indicated that a profound humoral immunosuppression accompanies the erythroleukemia caused by FV. The presence of antibodies to Friend virus and sheep erythrocytes in the plasma of erythroleukemic mice which are capable of mounting an immune response to FV was tested using agglutination and cell binding assays in order to determine if humoral immunosuppression exists in the bloodstream. Friend virus-infected mice exhibited the same antibody response as normal mice, so no immunosuppression was discovered. The immunosuppressive effects of the disease are under genetic control. A better understanding of immunosuppression effects of this disease leads to a better understanding of leukemia and its genetic control.

T4 percentages decreased slightly as compared to pre-implant percentages. T8 results could be divided into two subsets based on a definite increase or a definite decrease from pre-implant percentages. Finally, rats that showed an increase of T8 cells had significantly greater concentrations of dopamine (and, to a lesser extent, epinephrine and norepinephrine) than those with a decrease of T8 cells.

The colonial morphology and molecular composition of 26 phenotypes of Contagious Equine Metritis Organisms (CEMO) were studied by stereomicroscopic examination and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Twenty-three phenotypes had colonies that were round and smooth. Three phenotypes had colonies that were round and smooth with occasional fimbria projecting from the edge of the colonies. The consistency of all the colonies varied from friable and butyrous to viscid. Based on external observation in reflected and transmitted light, the 26 phenotypes were separated into 3 different types of colonial variants based on opacity. The major stained bands in the page profiles of all 26 phenotypes were observed and recorded. The stained bands were observed in polyacrylamide 125 gels that were prepared with CBB stain, silver stain, Isurface labeling, and Immuno-electroblotting procedures. Several differences between the polyacrylamide gel profiles of these strains were observed.

Pregnant female mice of the strain AB-Y were subjected to psychological and physiological stress during the last two weeks of pregnancy. Stress was provided by subjecting the animals to bright lights, confinement, and temperature increase. The male offspring of these stressed mice were then compared with normal control males of non-stressed mothers to test for deviance in male sexual behavior of the prenatally stressed males. The two groups were tested by placing them with estrus lure female mice and observing the male sexual behavioral characteristics displayed. It was found that the prenatally stressed males showed lower levels of male sexual behavior than the control males.

From an exponentially growing yeast culture, we obtained a synchronized culture using velocity gradient centrifugation. At five minute intervals, we determined the average cell buoyant density and the peak frequency cell volume to calculate the average cell mass at each of these time intervals. We found that the average yeast cell increases in mass at an exponential rate.

The plasmid pB1BR15, a recombinant, circular DNA duplex containing the adult chicken B-globin locus is the plasmid vector under study. A transformed colony of E. coli, containing this plasmid was cloned and cultured. The general procedure began with the cell culturing phase in order to achieve a maximum cell and plasmid count, to attain a high copy number. The next step was to lyse the cells and separate all of the DNA from the cellular debris. Then the plasmid DNA was separated from the other forms of DNA. The plasmids were observed using an agarose gel where the DNA could be confirmed as that of plasmids. Finally, the plasmids were restricted, run on a gel and then electroeluted. Electroelution was aided by the use of ethidium bromide intercalation and observation with UV light. A special multi-restriction process was performed to arrive at absolute confirmation of the plasmid. Through a series of biochemical techniques this plasmid was amplified, purified and restricted with type II restriction endonucleases.

Aminoglycosides have been associated with the preferential loss of hair cells; first in the basal portion of the organ of Corti and later in the apical portion of the organ of Corti. One current hypothesis is that a direct correlation exists between the concentration of aminoglycoside in the hair cells and destruction of the hair cells. The results of this experiment indicated that there were no detectable differences in drug concentrations between the basal portions and the apical portions of the organ of Corti. Interpretation of these results suggests that the preferential loss of hair cells is not due to differences in drug concentrations between the basal and apical hair cells.

Cobalt Lake located in the southeastern portion of Glacier National Park potentially receives acid rain. Precipitation containing sulfate and having a low pH indicates the possible presence of acid rain.

Friend virus (FV) is a murine leukemia virus. Previous studies have indicated that a profound humoral immunosuppression accompanies the erythroleukemia caused by FV. The presence of antibodies to Friend virus and sheep erythrocytes in the plasma of erythroleukemic mice which are capable of mounting an immune response to FV was tested using agglutination and cell binding assays in order to determine if humoral immunosuppression exists in the bloodstream. Friend virus-infected mice exhibited the same antibody response as normal mice, so no immunosuppression was discovered. The immunosuppressive effects of the disease are under genetic control. A better understanding of immunosuppression effects of this disease leads to a better understanding of leukemia and its genetic control.
