Resonance-like biological effects of millimeter-wave radiation at frequencies of approximately 42 GHz on the growth rate of E. coli and on DNA have been reported in several scientific publications. In order to explore these nonthermal effects, we have measured the growth rate and the absorption spectrum of E. coli, irradiated by millimeter waves in the frequency range from 41 to 43 GHz. In addition, the effect of this radiation on DNA was studied by measuring plasmid transformation efficiency. Both the growth rate variations with varying frequency and the variations in the result of the plasmid transformation efficiency experiments were found to be statistically insignificant. Resonance-like absorption features observed in the absorption spectrum of E. coli were identified as modes generated in the millimeter-wave system, when the sample was inserted. The experimental results indicate that resonance effects are unlikely in this particular frequency range. The role of substance P in mucosal stroking responses and intrinsic secretory reflexes was analyzed in muscle-stripped segments of distal colon isolated from male albino guinea pigs. Administration of antagonist GR-82334 in muscle-stripped segments of guinea pig distal colon reduced mucosal stroking by 69-75%. The application of neurokinin1 (NK1)- and NK3-receptor agonist caused tetrodotoxin-sensitive increase in short-circuit current indicating the role of substance P together with NK1 and NK3 receptors in mediating secretion.

In the book 'A Critic's Notebook', author Irving Howe concentrates on individual novel writers, the impact of some of their personal narratives on the minds of the readers, the aesthetic imagination and the true human emotions that generated the context and character of the novel. He remarks on their ability to express these inner visions to the readers in such a way as to maintain their interest and convey the thought tactfully. He has added his unique flavor while interpreting the works of other authors.

Writers use language to communicate truth to readers, and there are obstacles presented by the poor use of language. Some words can be worn out of meaning, and used for mere padding of a text. Meaning is also degraded by the use of sociological and psychological terminology. Use of labels can also diminish the communication of experience. Or the use of ornate and obscure language can also diminish meaning.

Purpose: Lymphoma is the commonest pediatric cancer in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Frequent treatment abandonment contributes to suboptimal outcomes. We examined risk factors and reasons for treatment abandonment for this population in Malawi.Methods: We conducted a mixed methods study among children < 18 years old with newly diagnosed lymphoma, prospectively enrolled during 2013-2016. All children received standardized diagnosis and treatment, and were followed for up to 2 years. Treatment abandonment was defined as failure to attend prescribed chemotherapy within 4 weeks, or post-treatment visit within 3 months. Child, guardian, and household characteristics associated with treatment abandonment were assessed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with primary caregivers of children experiencing treatment abandonment.Results: Of 121 children with newly diagnosed lymphoma, 72 (60%) had complete information regarding child, guardian, and household characteristics. Of these, 56 (78%) had Burkitt's and 16 (22%) Hodgkin's lymphoma. Forty-nine (68%) were male, median age was 10.6 years (interquartile range [IQR] 7.9-13.0), and 26 (36%) experienced treatment abandonment. Lack of guardian education and travel time ≥ 4 h to clinic were independently associated with treatment abandonment, with adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 3.8 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5-8.9, p = 0.005] and aHR 2.9 (95% CI 1.2-6.9, p = 0.019), respectively. Commonest reasons for treatment abandonment endorsed by 15 guardians were community influence, suboptimal clinic environment, logistical challenges, transport costs, treatment toxicities, loss of hope, alternative healers, and beliefs about cure.Conclusions: These findings highlight families at risk for treatment abandonment, underlying reasons, and opportunities to improve retention in care for pediatric cancer patients in SSA. Irving Howe appreciated the trouble taken to write a book, and always sent a personal role to the contributors to Dissent. He was slow in showing appreciation, but was not mean. He was proud of his work without being vain. Despite his popularity, he did not because smug or showy. He was usually reticent, though when he was open when he doubted a literary work.
