Abstract

Ecosystems globally are under threat from ongoing anthropogenic environmental change. Effective conservation management requires more thorough biodiversity surveys that can reveal system-level patterns and that can be applied rapidly across space and time. Using modern ecological models and community science, we integrate environmental DNA and Earth observations to produce a time snapshot of regional biodiversity patterns and provide multi-scalar community-level characterization. We collected 278 samples in spring 2017 from coastal, shrub, and lowland forest sites in California, a complex ecosystem and biodiversity hotspot. We recovered 16,118 taxonomic entries from eDNA analyses and compiled associated traditional observations and environmental data to assess how well they predicted alpha, beta, and zeta diversity. We found that local habitat classification was diagnostic of community composition and distinct communities and organisms in different kingdoms are predicted by different environmental variables. Nonetheless, gradient forest models of 915 families recovered by eDNA analysis and using BIOCLIM variables, Sentinel-2 satellite data, human impact, and topographical features as predictors, explained 35% of the variance in community turnover. Elevation, sand percentage, and photosynthetic activities (NDVI32) were the top predictors. In addition to this signal of environmental filtering, we found a positive relationship between environmentally predicted families and their numbers of biotic interactions, suggesting environmental change could have a disproportionate effect on community networks. Together, these analyses show that coupling eDNA with environmental predictors including remote sensing data has capacity to test proposed Essential Biodiversity Variables and create new landscape biodiversity baselines that span the tree of life.

Consistently considered one of the world’s most stressful occupations, the job of an airline pilot requires increasingly specific skills and responsibilities, especially amidst the global pandemic (Cullen, et al., 2020; Sew, et al., 2022). Given the severity and implications of their decisions and actions, airline pilots must continuously undergo training and practices to ensure proper procedure. In 2020, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) augmented qualifications by enacting Pilot Professional Development requirements (85 FR 10923), including mentoring for newly hired pilots in command (PIC’s). In complement with 85 FR 10923, CFR 121-N ensures “techniques for reinforcing the highest standards of technical performance, airmanship, and professional development in newly hired pilots” in command (CRF, 2020; FAA, 2020). Although meant to enhance skills and competencies, CFR 121-N allows for variability and discretion in implementation (FAA, 2020). This has led to diverse mentoring programs with mixed applications in mentoring across the industry. One specific airline mentoring program redesigned for intentionality and the expansion of the mentor mindset is the Horizon Air Pilot Development (PD) Mentor Program. Recognizing the need for mentoring to begin early in the employment process, the PD program underwent innovative formalization and restructuring to support Horizon Air core values and the belief that effective mentoring takes time to develop. Through the lens of mentoring research, this case study explores the novel processes, challenges, and best practices of the Horizon Air Pilot Development Mentor Program to gain additional insight about pilot satisfaction, future program development, and pilot recruitment and retention. Furthermore, this study offers results and impacts related to pre-employment pilot mentoring outcomes and presents a paradigm for the future of mentoring in the airline industry.

11. Brief Report: Metformin for Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

Antipsychotic treatment in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is becoming increasingly common, placing individuals at risk for antipsychotic-induced weight gain and associated complications. Metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide medication FDA-approved for treatment of type-2 diabetes in youth, may hold promise for treatment of antipsychotic-induced weight gain in youth with ASD. In this report we assess the long-term impact of metformin on antipsychotic-associated weight gain in a naturalistic sample of 53 youth with ASD. Results indicate that treatment with metformin stabilized BMI z-score over a nearly 2 year mean treatment period. Further work is indicated to determine the safety and efficacy of metformin treatment in youth with ASD, as well as predictors of response as a treatment for antipsychotic-induced weight gain.

Abstract

The thesis seeks to demonstrate that Conrad does not fit at all into the manly-heroic tradition which his work is often approached as belonging to. By tracing the entwining of masculine and homoerotic imagery in his major and minor works, as well as in the often neglected late novels, it is possible to discover ample evidence to suggest that he would be more accurately- if somewhat shockingly for critical tradition placed in the tradition of homosexual literature. Appended to the main body of the thesis is a glossary of homosexual codewords- words that were widely understood to refer to what was then the otherwise unmentionable crime of homosexuality from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This glossary is drawn both from the homosexual prose and poetry of the era, as well as from what evidence we have of wider public usages in contemporary newspapers, court-reports, diaries, letters, etc. At present, there is no recognition of, or collation of, the vast majority of these words in any dictionary of historical or sexual slang.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the knowledge and practices of Australian hospital pharmacy staff regarding animal-derived ingredients in medications and reviewing whether commonly used medications contain animalderived ingredients. The study surveyed 67 pharmacy staff and reviewed 20 medications. Ninety-eight percent of staff were aware patients may have religious or cultural restrictions on ingesting animal-derived products; 33% discussed this issue with patients. Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify likely pathogenic (LP) and pathogenic (P) genetic results for autism that can be returned to participants in SPARK (SPARKforAutism.org): a large recontactable cohort of people with autism in the United States. We also describe the process to return these clinically confirmed genetic findings.

Abstract

MOTIVATION: Linkage disequilibrium (LD) measures the correlation between genetic loci and is highly informative for association mapping and population genetics. As many studies rely on called genotypes for estimating LD, their results can be affected by data uncertainty, especially when employing a low read depth sequencing strategy. Furthermore, there is a manifest lack of tools for the analysis of large-scale, low-depth and short-read sequencing data from non-model organisms with limited sample sizes. RESULTS: ngsLD addresses these issues by estimating LD directly from genotype likelihoods in a fast, reliable and user-friendly implementation. This method makes use of the full information available from sequencing data and provides accurate estimates of linkage disequilibrium patterns compared with approaches based on genotype calling. We conducted a case study to investigate how LD decays over physical distance in two avian species. Abstract

This paper discusses Make/Use, a multi-disciplinary research project exploring “User Modifiable Zero Waste Fashion”. In particular, it addresses the use of textile print and a parametric matrix to facilitate the cognitive and creative processes involved in the transformation from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) form. The Make/Use project centers on the development and testing of an embedded navigational system by which users can formulate a functional understanding of the form and construction of a garment and its opportunities for manipulation. It questions how the encoding of navigational clues and markers into a garment might aid in its facility for creation and modification by the user, aiming to enhance emotional investment and connection, and extending its functional life by providing embedded opportunities for alteration and visible repair., The research for this work took place while I was a researcher at Massey University, the article was published while an employee at the University of Borås.
