We present the Deciphering the Interplay between the Interstellar medium, Stars, and the Circumgalactic medium (DIISC) Survey. This survey is designed to investigate the correlations in properties between the circumgalactic medium (CGM), the interstellar medium (ISM), stellar distributions, and young star-forming regions. The galaxies were chosen to have a QSO sightline within 3.5 times the HI radii probing the disk-CGM interface. The sample contains 34 low-redshift galaxies with a median stellar mass of 10$^{10.45}~\rm M_{\odot}$ probed at a median impact parameter of $\rho=55~kpc$. The survey combines ultraviolet spectroscopic data from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope with HI 21 cm hyperfine transition imaging with the Very Large Array (VLA), ultraviolet imaging from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), and optical imaging and spectroscopy with the MMT and Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope. We describe the specific goals of the survey, data reduction, high-level data products, and some early results. We present the discovery of a strong inverse correlation, at a confidence level of 99.99%, between Lyman $\alpha$ equivalent width, $\rm W_{Ly\alpha}$, and impact parameter normalized by the HI radius ($\rho/R_{HI}$). We find $\rho/R_{HI}$ to be a better empirical predictor of Lyman $\alpha$ equivalent width than virial radius normalized impact parameter ($\rho/R_{vir}$) or parameterizations combining $\rho,~R_{vir}$, stellar mass, and star formation rate. We conclude that the strong anticorrelation between the Lyman $\alpha$ equivalent width and $\rho/R_{HI}$ indicates that the neutral gas distribution of the CGM is more closely connected to the galaxy's gas disk rather than its stellar and dark matter content., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables Submitted to AAS Journals

The Koopman operator enables the analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems through a linear perspective by describing time evolution in the infinite-dimensional space of observables. Here this formalism is applied to shear flows, specifically the minimal flow unit plane Couette flow and a nine-dimensional model of turbulent shear flow between infinite parallel free-slip walls under a sinusoidal body force (Moehlis et al., New J. Phys. 6, 56 (2004)). We identify a finite set of observables and approximate the Koopman operator using neural networks, following the method developed by Constante-Amores et al., Chaos, 34(4), 043119 (2024). Then the time evolution is determined with a method here denoted as "Projected Koopman Dynamics". Using a high-dimensional approximate Koopman operator directly for the plane Couette system is computationally infeasible due to the high state space dimension of direct numerical simulations (DNS). However, the long-term dynamics of the dissipative Navier-Stokes equations are expected to live on a lower-dimensional invariant manifold. Motivated by this fact, we perform dimension reduction on the DNS data with a variant of the IRMAE-WD (implicit rank-minimizing autoencoder-weight decay) autoencoder (Zeng et al., MLST 5(2), 025053 (2024)) before applying the Koopman approach. We compare the performance of data-driven state space (neural ordinary differential equation) and Projected Koopman Dynamics approaches in manifold coordinates for plane Couette flow. Projected Koopman Dynamics effectively captures the chaotic behavior of Couette flow and the nine-dimensional model, excelling in both short-term tracking and long-term statistical analysis, outperforming other frameworks applied to these shear flows.

The dynamics of flexible filaments entrained in flow, important for understanding many biological and industrial processes, are computationally expensive to model with full-physics simulations. This work describes a data-driven technique to create high-fidelity low-dimensional models of flexible fiber dynamics using machine learning; the technique is applied to sedimentation in a quiescent, viscous Newtonian fluid, using results from detailed simulations as the data set. The approach combines an autoencoder neural network architecture to learn a low-dimensional latent representation of the filament shape, with a neural ODE that learns the evolution of the particle in the latent state. The model was designed to model filaments of varying flexibility, characterized by an elasto-gravitational number $\mathcal{B}$, and was trained on a data set containing the evolution of fibers beginning at set angles of inclination. For the range of $\mathcal{B}$ considered here (100-10000), the filament shape dynamics can be represented with high accuracy with only four degrees of freedom, in contrast to the 93 present in the original bead-spring model used to generate the dynamic trajectories. We predict the evolution of fibers set at arbitrary angles and demonstrate that our data-driven model can accurately forecast the evolution of a fiber at both trained and untrained elasto-gravitational numbers.

We analyze the \ovi\ content and kinematics for 126 {\hi}-selected absorbers at $0.14 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.73$ for which the metallicities of their cool photoionized phase have been determined. We separate the absorbers into 100 strong {\lya} forest systems (SLFSs with $15 \la$\,{\colden}\,$< 16.2$) and 26 partial Lyman Limit systems (pLLSs with $16.2\le$\,{\colden}\,$\le 17.2$). The sample is drawn from the COS CGM Compendium (CCC) and has \ovi\ coverage in $\sn \geq 8$ {\it HST}/COS G130M/G160M QSO spectra, yielding a $2\sigma$ completeness level of {\coldenovi}$\,\geq 13.6$. The \ovi\ detection rates differ substantially between low-metallicity (LM; {\xh} $\leq -1.4$) and high-metallicity (HM; {\xh} $> -1.4$) SLFSs, with 20\% and 60\% detection rates, respectively. The \ovi\ detection frequency for the HM and LM pLLSs is, however, similar at $\sim$60\%. The SLFSs and pLLSs without detected \ovi\ are consistent with the absorbing gas being in a single phase, while those with \ovi\ trace multiphase gas. We show that the \ovi\ velocity widths and column densities have different distributions in LM and HM gas. We find a strong correlation between \ovi\ column density and metallicity. The strongest (\coldenovi$\,\ga 14$) and broadest {\ovi} absorbers are nearly always associated with HM absorbers, while weaker \ovi\ absorbers are found in both LM and HM absorbers. From comparisons with galaxy-selected and blind \ovi\ surveys, we conclude absorbers with \coldenovi$\,\ga 14$ most likely arise in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of star-forming galaxies. Absorbers with weak \ovi\ likely trace the extended CGM or intergalactic medium (IGM), while those without \ovi\ likely originate in the IGM., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyze the far-ultraviolet spectroscopy of 20 young and massive star clusters (YSCs) in 11 nearby star-forming galaxies. We probe the interstellar gas intervening along the line of sight, detecting several metal absorption lines of a wide range of ionization potentials, from 6.0 eV to 77.5 eV. Multiple-component Voigt fits to the absorption lines are used to study the kinematics of the gas. We find that nearly all targets in the sample feature gas outflowing from 30 up to 190 km per second, often both in the neutral and ionized phase. The outflow velocities correlate with the underlying stellar population properties directly linked to the feedback: the mass of the YSCs, the photon production rate and the instantaneous mechanical luminosity produced by stellar winds and SNe. We detect a neutral inflow in 4 targets, which we interpret as likely not associated with the star cluster but tracing larger scale gas kinematics. A comparison between the outflows energy and that produced by the associated young stellar populations suggests an average coupling efficiency of 10 per cent with a broad scatter. Our results extend the relation found in previous works between galactic outflows and the host galaxy star-formation rate to smaller scales, pointing towards the key role that clustered star formation and feedback play in regulating galaxy growth., Comment: Accepted for publication on the Astronomical Journal on 14th February 2024. 32 pages, 13 figures

We characterize the Magellanic Corona, the warm gaseous halo around the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The Corona is a key ingredient in the formation of the Magellanic Stream (Lucchini et al. 2020, 2021) and has recently been observed in high-ion absorption around the LMC. In this work we present a suite of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations to constrain its total mass and temperature prior to the infall of the Magellanic Clouds to our Galaxy. We find that the LMC is able to host a stable Corona before and during its approach to the MW through to the present day. With a Magellanic Corona of $>2\times10^9$ M$_\odot$ at $3\times10^5$ K, our simulations can reproduce the observed total mass of the neutral and ionized components of the Trailing Stream, size of the LMC disk, ionization fractions along the Stream, morphology of the neutral gas, and on-sky extent of the ionized gas. High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are multi-phase gas structures whose velocities (|v_LSR|>100 km/s) are too high to be explained by Galactic disk rotation. While large HVCs are well characterized, compact and small HVCs (with HI angular sizes of a few degrees) are poorly understood. Possible origins for such small clouds include Milky Way halo gas or fragments of the Magellanic System, but neither their origin nor their connection to the Milky Way halo has been confirmed. We use new Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph UV spectra and Green Bank Telescope HI spectra to measure the metallicities of five small HVCs in the southern Galactic sky projected near the Magellanic System. We build a set of distance-dependent Cloudy photoionization models for each cloud and calculate their ionization-corrected metallicities. All five small HVCs have oxygen metallicities <0.17 Z_sun, indicating they do not originate in the disk of the Milky Way. Two of the five have metallicities of 0.16-0.17 Z_sun, similar to the Magellanic Stream, suggesting these clouds are fragments of the Magellanic System. The remaining three clouds have much lower metallicities of 0.02-0.04 Z_sun. While the origin of these low-metallicity clouds is unclear, they could be gaseous mini-halos or gas stripped from dwarf galaxies by ram pressure or tidal interactions. These results suggest that small HVCs do not all reside in the inner Milky Way halo or the Magellanic System, but instead can trace more distant structures., Comment: 25 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

We explore the growth of the stellar disks in 14 nearby spiral galaxies as part of the Deciphering the Interplay between the Interstellar medium, Stars, and the Circumgalactic medium (DIISC) survey. We study the radial distribution of specific star formation rates (sSFR) and investigate the ratio of the difference in the outer and inner sSFR ($\Delta_{sSFR}~={\rm sSFR}_{out}-{\rm sSFR}_{in}$) of the disk and the total sSFR, $\Delta_{sSFR}$/sSFR to quantify disk growth. We find $\Delta_{sSFR}$/sSFR and the HI gas fraction to show a mild correlation of Spearman's $\rho=0.30$, indicating that star formation and disk growth are likely to proceed outward in galactic disks with high HI gas fractions. The HI gas fractions and $\Delta_{sSFR}$/sSFR of the galaxies also increase with the distance to the nearest L$_\star$ neighbor, suggesting that galaxies are likely to sustain their ISM cold gas and exhibit inside-out growth in isolated environments. However, the HI content in their circumgalactic medium, probed by the Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (W$_{Ly\alpha}$) excess, is observed to be suppressed in isolated environments, apparent from the strong anti-correlation between the W$_{Ly\alpha}$ excess and the distance to the 5$^{\rm th}$ nearest L$_\star$ neighbor (Spearman's $\rho=-0.62$). As expected, W$_{Ly\alpha}$ is also found to be suppressed in cluster galaxies. We find no relation between the W$_{Ly\alpha}$ excess of the detected CGM absorber and $\Delta_{sSFR}$/sSFR implying that the enhancement and suppression of the circumgalactic HI gas does not affect the direction in which star formation proceeds in a galactic disk or vice-versa., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding how galaxies interact with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) requires determining how galaxies morphological and stellar properties correlate with their CGM properties. We report an analysis of 66 well-imaged galaxies detected in HST and VLT MUSE observations and determined to be within $\pm$500 km s$^{-1}$ of the redshifts of strong intervening quasar absorbers at $0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.4$ with H I column densities $N_{\rm H I}$ $>$ $10^{18}$ $\rm cm^{-2}$. We present the geometrical properties (S\'ersic indices, effective radii, axis ratios, and position angles) of these galaxies determined using GALFIT. Using these properties along with star formation rates (SFRs, estimated using the H$\alpha$ or [O II] luminosity) and stellar masses ($M_{*}$ estimated from spectral energy distribution fits), we examine correlations among various stellar and CGM properties. Our main findings are as follows: (1) SFR correlates well with $M_{*}$, and most absorption-selected galaxies are consistent with the star formation main sequence (SFMS) of the global population. (2) More massive absorber counterparts are more centrally concentrated and are larger in size. (3) Galaxy sizes and normalized impact parameters correlate negatively with $N_{\rm H I}$, consistent with higher $N_{\rm H I}$ absorption arising in smaller galaxies, and closer to galaxy centers. (4) Absorption and emission metallicities correlate with $M_{*}$ and sSFR, implying metal-poor absorbers arise in galaxies with low past star formation and faster current gas consumption rates. (5) SFR surface densities of absorption-selected galaxies are higher than predicted by the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation for local galaxies, suggesting a higher star formation efficiency in the absorption-selected galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 25 pages, 19 figures

The Galactic Center (GC) is surrounded by plasma lobes that extend up to ~14 kpc above and below the plane. Until now, UV absorption studies of these lobes have only focused on high-velocity components (|v_LSR| > 100 km/s) because low- and intermediate-velocity (LIV) components (|v_LSR| <100 km/s) are blended with foreground interstellar medium. To overcome this difficulty, we present a differential experiment to compare the LIV absorption between different structures within the GC region, including the Fermi Bubbles (FBs; seen in gamma-rays), the eROSITA Bubbles (eBs; seen in X-rays), and the Loop I North Polar Spur (LNPS) association, an X-ray and radio feature within the northern eB. We use far-UV spectra from Hubble Space Telescope to measure LIV Si IV absorption in 61 AGN sight lines, of which 21 pass through the FBs, 53 pass through the eBs, and 18 pass through the LNPS. We also compare our measurements to those in the literature from sight lines covering the disk-halo interface and CGM. We find that the FBs and eBs have enhancements in measured columns of 0.22-0.29 dex in log. We also remove the contribution of a modeled disk and CGM component from the measured Si IV columns and find that the northern eB still retains a Si IV enhancement of 0.62 dex in log. A similar enhancement is not seen in the southern eB. Since the LNPS model-subtracted residuals show an enhancement compared to the rest of the northern eB of 0.69 dex, the northern eB enhancement may be caused by the LNPS., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The flow of gas into and out of galaxies leaves traces in the circumgalactic medium which can then be studied using absorption lines towards background quasars. We analyse 27 log(N_HI) > 18.0 HI absorbers at z = 0.2 to 1.4 from the MUSE-ALMA Halos survey with at least one galaxy counterpart within a line of sight velocity of +/-500 km s^{-1}. We perform 3D kinematic forward modelling of these associated galaxies to examine the flow of dense, neutral gas in the circumgalactic medium. From the VLT/MUSE, HST broadband imaging and VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES high-resolution UV quasar spectroscopy observations, we compare the impact parameters, star-formation rates and stellar masses of the associated galaxies with the absorber properties. We find marginal evidence for a bimodal distribution in azimuthal angles for strong HI absorbers, similar to previous studies of the MgII and OVI absorption lines. There is no clear metallicity dependence on azimuthal angle and we suggest a larger sample of absorbers are required to fully test the relationship predicted by cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. A case-by-case study of the absorbers reveals that ten per cent of absorbers are consistent with gas accretion, up to 30 per cent trace outflows while the remainder trace gas in the galaxy disk, the intragroup medium and low-mass galaxies below the MUSE detection limit. While many phenomena in physics and engineering are formally high-dimensional, their long-time dynamics often live on a lower-dimensional manifold. The present work introduces an autoencoder framework that combines implicit regularization with internal linear layers and $L_2$ regularization (weight decay) to automatically estimate the underlying dimensionality of a data set, produce an orthogonal manifold coordinate system, and provide the mapping functions between the ambient space and manifold space, allowing for out-of-sample projections. We validate our framework's ability to estimate the manifold dimension for a series of datasets from dynamical systems of varying complexities and compare to other state-of-the-art estimators. We analyze the training dynamics of the network to glean insight into the mechanism of low-rank learning and find that collectively each of the implicit regularizing layers compound the low-rank representation and even self-correct during training. Analysis of gradient descent dynamics for this architecture in the linear case reveals the role of the internal linear layers in leading to faster decay of a "collective weight variable" incorporating all layers, and the role of weight decay in breaking degeneracies and thus driving convergence along directions in which no decay would occur in its absence. We show that this framework can be naturally extended for applications of state-space modeling and forecasting by generating a data-driven dynamic model of a spatiotemporally chaotic partial differential equation using only the manifold coordinates. Finally, we demonstrate that our framework is robust to hyperparameter choices.

We present the detection of dust depletion in Complex C, a massive, infalling, low-metallicity high-velocity cloud in the northern Galactic hemisphere that traces the ongoing accretion of gas onto the Milky Way. We analyze a very high signal-to-noise HST/COS spectrum of AGN Mrk 817 formed by coadding 165 individual exposures taken under the AGN STORM 2 program, allowing us to determine dust-depletion patterns in Complex C at unprecedented precision. By fitting Voigt components to the O I, S II, N I, Si II, Fe II, and Al II absorption and applying ionization corrections from customized Cloudy photoionization models, we find sub-solar elemental abundance ratios of [Fe/S]=-0.42+/-0.08, [Si/S]=-0.29+/-0.05, and [Al/S]=-0.53+/-0.08. These ratios indicate the depletion of Fe, Si, and Al into dust grains, since S is mostly undepleted. The detection of dust provides an important constraint on the origin of Complex C, as dust grains indicate the gas has been processed through galaxies, rather than being purely extragalactic. We also derive a low metallicity of Complex C of [S/H]=-0.51+/-0.16 (31% solar), confirming earlier results from this sightline. We discuss origin models that could explain the presence of dust in Complex C, including Galactic fountain models, tidal stripping from the Magellanic Clouds or other satellite galaxies, and precipitation of coronal gas onto dust-bearing ``seed" clouds., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. Dynamical systems with extreme events are difficult to capture with data-driven modeling, due to the relative scarcity of data within extreme events compared to the typical dynamics of the system, and the strong dependence of the long-time occurrence of extreme events on short-time conditions.A recently developed technique [Floryan, D. & Graham, M. D. Data-driven discovery of intrinsic dynamics. Nat Mach Intell $\textbf{4}$, 1113-1120 (2022)], here denoted as $\textit{Charts and Atlases for Nonlinear Data-Driven Dynamics on Manifolds}$, or CANDyMan, overcomes these difficulties by decomposing the time series into separate charts based on data similarity, learning dynamical models on each chart via individual time-mapping neural networks, then stitching the charts together to create a single atlas to yield a global dynamical model. We apply CANDyMan to a nine-dimensional model of turbulent shear flow between infinite parallel free-slip walls under a sinusoidal body force [Moehlis, J., Faisst, H. & Eckhardt, B. A low-dimensional model for turbulent shear flows. New J Phys $\textbf{6}$, 56 (2004)], which undergoes extreme events in the form of intermittent quasi-laminarization and long-time full laminarization. We demonstrate that the CANDyMan method allows the trained dynamical models to more accurately forecast the evolution of the model coefficients, reducing the error in the predictions as the model evolves forward in time. The gas cycling in the circumgalactic regions of galaxies is known to be multi-phase. The MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey gathers a large multi-wavelength observational sample of absorption and emission data with the goal to significantly advance our understanding of the physical properties of such CGM gas. A key component of the MUSE-ALMA Haloes survey is the multi-facility observational campaign conducted with VLT/MUSE, ALMA and HST. MUSE-ALMA Haloes targets comprise 19 VLT/MUSE IFS quasar fields, including 32 $z_{\rm abs}<$0.85 strong absorbers with measured N$_{HI}$ $\geq 10^{18}$ cm$^{\rm -2}$ from UV-spectroscopy. We additionally use a new complementary HST medium program to characterise the stellar content of the galaxies through a 40-orbit three-band UVIS and IR WFC3 imaging. Beyond the absorber-selected targets, we detect 3658 sources all fields combined, including 703 objects with spectroscopic redshifts. This galaxy-selected sample constitutes the main focus of the current paper. We have secured millimeter ALMA observations of some of the fields to probe the molecular gas properties of these objects. Here, we present the overall survey science goals, target selection, observational strategy, data processing and source identification of the full sample. Furthermore, we provide catalogues of magnitude measurements for all objects detected in VLT/MUSE, ALMA and HST broad-band images and associated spectroscopic redshifts derived from VLT/MUSE observations. Together, this data set provides robust characterisation of the neutral atomic gas, molecular gas and stars in the same objects resulting in the baryon census of condensed matter in complex galaxy structures., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. We characterize the chemical and physical conditions in an outflowing high-velocity cloud in the inner Galaxy. We report a super-solar metallicity of [O/H] = $+0.36\pm0.12$ for the high-velocity cloud at $v_\mathrm{LSR}$ = 125.6 km s$^{-1}$ toward the star HD 156359 ($l$ = 328.$^{\circ}$7, $b$ = $-$14.$^{\circ}$5, $d$ = 9 kpc, $z$ = $-$2.3 kpc). Using archival observations from FUSE, HST STIS, and ESO FEROS we measure high-velocity absorption in H I, O I, C II, N II, Si II, Ca II, Si III, Fe III, C IV, Si IV, N V, and O VI. We measure a low H I column density of log $N$(H I) = $15.54\pm0.05$ in the HVC from multiple unsaturated H I Lyman series lines in the FUSE data. We determine a low dust depletion level in the HVC from the relative strength of silicon, iron, and calcium absorption relative to oxygen, with [Si/O]=$-0.33\pm0.14$, [Fe/O]=$-0.30\pm0.20$, and [Ca/O] =$-0.56\pm0.16$. Analysis of the high-ion absorption using collisional ionization models indicates that the hot plasma is multi-phase, with the C IV and Si IV tracing 10$^{4.9}$ K gas and N V and O VI tracing 10$^{5.4}$ K gas. The cloud's metallicity, dust content, kinematics, and close proximity to the disk are all consistent with a Galactic wind origin. The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC) are the closest major satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. They are likely on their first passage on an infalling orbit towards our Galaxy (Besla et al. 2007) and trace the ongoing dynamics of the Local Group (D'Onghia & Fox 2016). Recent measurements of a high mass for the LMC (M_halo = 10^(11.1-11.4) solar masses; Penarrubia et al. 2016, Erkal et al. 2018, 2019, Kallivayalil et al. 2018) imply the LMC should host a Magellanic Corona: a collisionally ionized, warm-hot gaseous halo at the virial temperature (10^(5.3-5.5) K) initially extending out to the virial radius (100-130 kpc). Such a Corona would have shaped the formation of the Magellanic Stream (Lucchini et al. 2020), a tidal gas structure extending over 200 degrees across the sky (D'Onghia & Fox 2016, Besla et al. 2012, Nidever et al. 2010) that is bringing in metal poor gas to the Milky Way (Fox et al. 2014). No observational evidence for such an extended Corona has been published previously, with detections of highly ionized gas only reported in directions directly toward the LMC, where winds from the LMC disk may dominate (deBoer & Savage 1980, Wakker et al. 1998). Here we show evidence for this Magellanic Corona with a potential direct detection in highly ionized oxygen (O^+5), and indirectly via triply-ionized carbon and silicon, seen in ultraviolet absorption toward background quasars. We find that the Magellanic Corona is part of a pervasive multiphase Magellanic circumgalactic medium (CGM) seen in many ionization states with a declining projected radial profile out to at least 35 kpc from the LMC and a total ionized CGM mass of log_10(M_HII;CGM/solar masses) = 9.1 +/- 0.2. The Galactic Center is surrounded by two giant plasma lobes known as the Fermi Bubbles, extending ~10 kpc both above and below the Galactic plane. Spectroscopic observations of Fermi Bubble directions at radio, ultraviolet, and optical wavelengths have detected multi-phase gas clouds thought to be embedded within the bubbles referred to as Fermi Bubble high-velocity clouds (FB HVCs). While these clouds have kinematics that can be modeled by a biconical nuclear wind launched from the Galactic center, their exact origin is unknown because, until now, there has been little information on their heavy-metal abundance (metallicity). Here we show that FB HVCs have a wide range of metallicities from <20% solar to ~320% solar. This result is based on the first metallicity survey of FB HVCs. These metallicities challenge the previously accepted tenet that all FB HVCs are launched from the Galactic center into the Fermi Bubbles with solar or super-solar metallicities. Instead, we suggest that FB HVCs originate in both the Milky Way's disk and halo. As such, some of these clouds may characterize circumgalactic medium that the Fermi Bubbles expand into, rather than material carried outward by the nuclear wind, changing the canonical picture of FB HVCs. The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize the absorber-associated galaxies. We find 23 unique absorber-associated galaxies, with an average of one associated galaxy per absorber. For seven absorbers, all with $<10\%$ solar metallicities, we find no associated galaxies with $\log M_\star \gtrsim 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir}$ and $|\Delta v|/v_{esc} \le$ 1.5 with respect to the absorber. We do not find any strong correlations between the metallicities or HI column densities of the gas and most of the galaxy properties, except for the stellar mass of the galaxies: the low-metallicity ([X/H] $\le -1.4$) systems have a probability of $0.39^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ for having a host galaxy with $\log M_\star \ge 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir} \le 1.5$, while the higher metallicity absorbers have a probability of $0.78^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$. This implies metal-enriched pLLSs/LLSs at $z<1$ are typically associated with the CGM of galaxies with $\log M_\star > 9.0$, whereas low-metallicity pLLSs/LLSs are found in more diverse locations, with one population arising in the CGM of galaxies and another more broadly distributed in overdense regions of the universe. Using absorbers not associated with galaxies, we estimate the unweighted geometric mean metallicity of the intergalactic medium to be [X/H] $\lesssim -2.1$ at $z<1$, which is lower than previously estimated., Comment: Key figures: 13 and 18. Metallicity estimates of circumgalactic gas based on absorption line measurements typically require photoionization modeling to account for unseen ionization states. We explore the impact of uncertainties in the extreme ultraviolet background (EUVB) radiation on such metallicity determinations for the z < 1 circumgalactic medium (CGM). In particular, we study how uncertainties in the power-law slope of the EUV radiation, $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$, from active galactic nuclei affect metallicity estimates in a sample of 34 absorbers with HI column densities between 15.25 < log ($\mathrm{N_{HI}}$ / $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$) < 17.25 and measured metal ion column densities. We demonstrate the sensitivity of metallicity estimates to changes in the EUV power-law slope of active galactic nuclei, $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$, at low redshift (z < 1), showing derived absorber metallicities increase on average by approximately 0.3 dex as the EUV slope is hardened from $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$ = -2.0 to -1.4. We use Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling of photoionization models with $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$ as a free parameter to derive metallicities for these absorbers. The current sample of absorbers does not provide a robust constraint on the slope, $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$, itself; we discuss how future analyses may provide stronger constraints. Marginalizing over the uncertainty in the slope of the background, we find the average uncertainties in the metallicity determinations increase from 0.08 dex to 0.14 dex when switching from a fixed EUVB slope to one that freely varies. We report the first direct detection of molecular hydrogen associated with the Galactic nuclear wind. The Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectrum of LS 4825, a B1 Ib-II star at $l,b$ = 1.67$^{\circ}$,$-$6.63$^{\circ}$ lying $d$ = 9.9$^{+1.4}_{-0.8}$ kpc from the Sun, $\sim$1 kpc below the Galactic plane near the Galactic Center, shows two high-velocity H$_2$ components at $v_\mathrm{LSR}$ = $-79$ and $-108$ km s$^{-1}$. In contrast, the FUSE spectrum of the nearby ($\sim$0.6$^{\circ}$ away) foreground star HD 167402 at $d$=4.9$^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ kpc reveals no H$_2$ absorption at these velocities. Over 60 lines of H$_2$ from rotational levels $J$ = 0 to 5 are identified in the high-velocity clouds. For the $v_\mathrm{LSR}$ = $-79$ km s$^{-1}$ cloud we measure total log $N$(H$_2$) $\geq$ 16.75 cm$^{-2}$, molecular fraction $f_\mathrm{H_2}$ $\geq$ 0.8%, and $T_{01}$ $\geq$ 97 and $T_{25}$ $\leq$ 439 K for the ground- and excited-state rotational excitation temperatures. At $v_\mathrm{LSR}$ = $-108$ km s$^{-1}$, we measure log $N$(H$_2$) = 16.13 $\pm$ 0.10 cm$^{-2}$, $f_\mathrm{H_2}$ $\geq$ 0.5%, and $T_{01}$ = 77$^{+34}_{-18}$ and $T_{25}$ = 1092$^{+149}_{-117}$ K, for which the excited state ortho- to para-H$_2$ is 1.0$^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$, much less than the equilibrium value of 3 expected for gas at this temperature. This non-equilibrium ratio suggests that the $-108$ km s$^{-1}$ cloud has been recently excited and has not yet had time to equilibrate. We present new simulations of the formation of the Magellanic Stream based on an updated first-passage interaction history for the Magellanic Clouds, including both the Galactic and Magellanic Coronae and a live dark matter halo for the Milky Way. This new interaction history is needed because previously successful orbits need updating to account for the Magellanic Corona and the loosely bound nature of the Magellanic Group. These orbits involve two tidal interactions over the last 3.5 Gyrs and reproduce the Stream's position and appearance on the sky, mass distribution, and velocity profile. Most importantly, our simulated Stream is only $\sim$20 kpc away from the Sun at its closest point, whereas previous first-infall models predicted a distance of $100-200$ kpc. This dramatic paradigm shift in the Stream's 3D position would have several important implications. First, estimates of the observed neutral and ionized masses would be reduced by a factor of $\sim$5. Second, the stellar component of the Stream is also predicted to be $<$20 kpc away. Third, the enhanced interactions with the MW's hot corona at this small distance would substantially shorten the Stream's lifetime. Finally, the MW's UV radiation field would be much stronger, potentially explaining the H$\alpha$ emission observed along most of the Stream. We present our investigation of the Extended Ultraviolet (XUV) disk galaxy, NGC 3344, conducted as part of Deciphering the Interplay between the Interstellar medium, Stars, and the Circumgalactic medium (DIISC) survey. We use surface and aperture photometry of individual young stellar complexes to study star formation and its effect on the physical properties of the interstellar medium. We measure the specific star-formation rate (sSFR) and find it to increase from $\rm10^{-10} yr^{-1}$ in the inner disk to $\rm>10^{-8} yr^{-1}$ in the extended disk. This provides evidence for inside-out disk growth. If these sSFRs are maintained, the XUV disk stellar mass can double in $\sim$0.5 Gyr, suggesting a burst of star formation. The XUV disk will continue forming stars for a long time due to the high gas depletion times ($\tau_{dep}$). The stellar complexes in the XUV disk have high-$\Sigma_{HI}$ and low-$\Sigma_{SFR}$ with $\tau_{dep}\sim$10 Gyrs, marking the onset of a deviation from the traditional Kennicutt-Schmidt law. We find that both far-ultraviolet (FUV) and a combination of FUV and 24$\mu$m effectively trace star formation in the XUV disk. H$\alpha$ is weaker in general and prone to stochasticities in the formation of massive stars. Investigation of the circumgalactic medium at 29.5 kpc resulted in the detection of two absorbing systems with metal-line species: the stronger absorption component is consistent with gas flows around the disk, most likely tracing inflow, while the weaker component is likely tracing corotating circumgalactic gas., Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, accepted to ApJ

We report the discovery of two kinematically anomalous atomic hydrogen (HI) clouds in M 100 (NGC 4321), which was observed as part of the Deciphering the Interplay between the Interstellar medium, Stars, and the Circumgalactic medium (DIISC) survey in HI 21 cm at 3.3 km s$^{-1}$ spectroscopic and 44 arcsec$\times$30 arcsec spatial resolution using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. These clouds were identified as structures that show significant kinematic offsets from the rotating disk of M100. The velocity offsets of 40 km s$^{-1}$ observed in these clouds are comparable to the offsets seen in intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs) in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. We find that one anomalous cloud in M 100 is associated with star-forming regions detected in H$\alpha$ and far-ultraviolet imaging. Our investigation shows that anomalous clouds in M 100 may originate from multiple mechanisms, such as star formation feedback-driven outflows, ram-pressure stripping, and tidal interactions with satellite galaxies. Moreover, we do not detect any cool CGM at 38.8 kpc from the center of M 100, giving an upper limit of N(HI) $\le$ $1.7\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ (3$\sigma$). The Interstellar Medium (ISM) comprises gases at different temperatures and densities, including ionized, atomic, molecular species, and dust particles. The neutral ISM is dominated by neutral hydrogen and has ionization fractions up to 8%. The concentration of chemical elements heavier than helium (metallicity) spans orders of magnitudes in Galactic stars, because they formed at different times. Instead, the gas in the Solar vicinity is assumed to be well mixed and have Solar metallicity in traditional chemical evolution models. The ISM chemical abundances can be accurately measured with UV absorption-line spectroscopy. However, the effects of dust depletion, which removes part of the metals from the observable gaseous phase and incorporates it into solid grains, have prevented, until recently, a deeper investigation of the ISM metallicity. Here we report the dust-corrected metallicity of the neutral ISM measured towards 25 stars in our Galaxy. We find large variations in metallicity over a factor of 10 (with an average 55 +/- 7% Solar and standard deviation 0.28 dex) and including many regions of low metallicity, down to ~17% Solar and possibly below. Pristine gas falling onto the disk in the form of high-velocity clouds can cause the observed chemical inhomogeneities on scales of tens of pc. We present Gemini/NIFS near-IR integral field spectroscopy of the fields-of-view around two AGNs behind the Fermi Bubbles (PDS 456 and 1H1613-097) to search for molecular gas in the Milky Way's nuclear wind. These two AGN sightlines were selected by the presence of high-velocity neutral and ionized gas seen in UV absorption. We do not detect any extended emission from the H2 ro-vibrational S(0) and S(1) lines at 2.224 and 2.122 microns in either direction. For the S(1) line, the 3-sigma surface brightness limits derived from spectra extracted across the full 3x3 arcsecond NIFS field-of-view are 2.4e-17 erg/cm2/s/A/arcsec2 for PDS 456 and and 4.9e-18 erg/cm2/s/A/arcsec2 for 1H1613-097. Given these non-detections, we conclude that CO emission-line studies and H2 UV absorption-line studies are more promising approaches for characterizing the molecular gas in the Fermi Bubbles., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

We present a census of neutral gas in the Milky Way disk and halo down to limiting column densities of $N$(HI)$\sim10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ using measurements of HI Lyman-series absorption from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our results are drawn from an analysis of 25 AGN sightlines spread evenly across the sky with Galactic latitude |b|$\gtrsim 20^{\circ}$. By simultaneously fitting multi-component Voigt profiles to 11 Lyman-series absorption transitions covered by FUSE (Ly$\beta$-Ly$\mu$) plus HST measurements of Ly$\alpha$, we derive the kinematics and column densities of a sample of 152 HI absorption components. While saturation prevents accurate measurements of many components with column densities 17$\lesssim$log$N$(HI)$\lesssim$19, we derive robust measurements at log$N$(HI)$\lesssim$17 and log$N$(HI)$\gtrsim$19. We derive the first ultraviolet HI column density distribution function (CDDF) of the Milky Way, both globally and for low-velocity (ISM), intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs), and high-velocity clouds (HVCs). We find that IVCs and HVCs show statistically indistinguishable CDDF slopes, with $\beta_{\rm IVC}=$ $-1.01_{-0.14}^{+0.15}$ and $\beta_{\rm HVC}=$ $-1.05_{-0.06}^{+0.07}$. Overall, the CDDF of the Galactic disk and halo appears shallower than that found by comparable extragalactic surveys, suggesting a relative abundance of high-column density gas in the Galactic halo. We derive the sky covering fractions as a function of HI column density, finding an enhancement of IVC gas in the northern hemisphere compared to the south. We also find evidence for an excess of inflowing HI over outflowing HI, with $-$0.88$\pm$0.40 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ of HVC inflow versus 0.20$\pm$0.10 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ of HVC outflow, confirming an excess of inflowing HVCs seen in UV metal lines., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 55 pages, 42 figures, 4 tables

We present spatially resolved measurements of cool gas flowing into and out of the Milky Way (MW), using archival ultraviolet spectra of background quasars from the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. We co-add spectra of different background sources at close projected angular separation on the sky. This novel stacking technique dramatically increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra, allowing detection of low column density gas (down to $EW$ > 2 mA). We identify absorption as inflowing or outflowing, by using blue/redshifted high velocity cloud (HVC) absorption components in the Galactocentric rest frame, respectively. The mass surface densities of inflowing and outflowing gas both vary by more than an order of magnitude across the sky, with mean values of $\langle \Sigma_{in}\rangle \gtrsim 10^{4.6\pm0.1}$ $M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}$ for inflowing gas and $\langle \Sigma_{out}\rangle \gtrsim 10^{3.5\pm 0.1}$ $M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}$ for outflowing gas, respectively. The mass flow rate surface densities (mass flow rates per unit area) also show large variation across the sky with $\langle \dot{\Sigma}(d)_{in}\rangle \gtrsim (10^{-3.6\pm0.1})(d/12 \mathrm{kpc})^{-1} M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ for inflowing and $\langle \dot{\Sigma}(d)_{out}\rangle \gtrsim (10^{-4.8\pm0.1})(d/12\,\mathrm{kpc})^{-1} M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ for outflowing gas, respectively. The regions with highest surface mass density of inflowing gas are clustered at smaller angular scales ($\theta < 40^\circ$). This indicates that most of the mass in inflowing gas is confined to small, well-defined structures, whereas the distribution of outflowing gas is spread more uniformly throughout the sky. We carry out a comparative analysis of the metallicities from the stellar, neutral-gas, and ionized-gas components in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We analyze spectroscopic observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detect a clear depletion of the HI gas, as observed from the HI column densities in the nuclear region of this spiral galaxy. We find column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $<$ 20.0 at galactocentric distances of $<$ 0.18 kpc, in contrast to column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $\sim$ 21.0 in the galactic disk, a trend observed in other nearby spiral galaxies. We measure a metallicity gradient of $-$0.03 $\pm$ 0.01 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for the ionized gas, comparable to the metallicity gradient of a local benchmark of 49 nearby star-forming galaxies of $-$0.026 $\pm$ 0.002 dex kpc$^{-1}$. Our co-spatial metallicity comparison of the multi-phase gas and stellar populations shows excellent agreement outside of the nucleus of the galaxy hinting at a scenario where the mixing of newly synthesized metals from the most massive stars in the star clusters takes longer than their lifetimes ($\sim$10 Myr). Finally, our work shows that caution must be taken when studying the metallicity gradient of the neutral-gas component in star-forming galaxies, since this can be strongly biased, as these environments can be dominated by molecular gas. The dominant gaseous structure in the Galactic halo is the Magellanic Stream, an extended network of neutral and ionized filaments surrounding the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC), the two most massive satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. Recent observations indicate that the Clouds are on their first passage around our Galaxy, the Stream is made up of gas stripped from both the LMC and the SMC, and the majority of this gas is ionized. While it has long been suspected that tidal forces and ram-pressure stripping contributed to the Stream's formation, a full understanding of its origins has defied modelers for decades. Several recent developments, including the discovery of dwarf galaxies associated with the Magellanic Group, the high mass of the LMC, the detection of highly ionized gas toward stars in the LMC and the predictions of cosmological simulations all support the existence of a halo of warm ionized gas around the LMC at a temperature of $\sim5\times10^{5}\;\mathrm{K}$. Here we show that by including this "Magellanic Corona" in hydrodynamic simulations of the Magellanic Clouds falling onto the Galaxy, we can simultaneously reproduce the Stream and its Leading Arm. Our simulations explain the Stream's filamentary structure, spatial extent, radial velocity gradient, and total ionized gas mass. We predict that the Magellanic Corona will be unambiguously observable via high-ionization absorption lines in the ultraviolet spectra of background quasars lying near the LMC. Using new ultraviolet (UV) spectra of five background quasars from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, we analyze the low-latitude (|b|=20-30 degree) regions of the Fermi Bubbles, the giant gamma-ray emitting lobes at the Galactic Center. We combine these data with previous UV and atomic hydrogen (HI) datasets to build a comprehensive picture of the kinematics and metal column densities of the cool outflowing clouds entrained in the Fermi Bubbles. We find that the number of UV absorption components per sightline decreases as a function of increasing latitude, suggesting that the outflowing clouds become less common with increasing latitude. The Fermi Bubble HI clouds are accelerated up to b~7 degree, whereas when we model the UV Fermi Bubbles clouds deprojected flow velocities, we find that they are flat or even accelerating with distance from the Galactic center. This trend, which holds in both the northern and southern hemispheres, indicates that the nuclear outflow accelerates clouds throughout the Fermi Bubbles or has an acceleration phase followed by a coasting phase. Finally, we note the existence of several blueshifted high-velocity clouds at latitudes exceeding ~30 degree, whose velocities cannot be explained by gas clouds confined to the inside of the gamma-ray defined Fermi Bubbles. These anomalous velocity clouds are likely in front of the Fermi Bubbles and could be remnants from past nuclear outflows. The Magellanic Stream and the Leading Arm form a massive, filamentary system of gas clouds surrounding the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Here we present a new component-level analysis of their ultraviolet (UV) kinematic properties using a sample of 31 sightlines through the Magellanic System observed with the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Using Voigt profile fits to UV metal-line absorption, we quantify the kinematic differences between the low-ion (Si II and C II), intermediate-ion (Si III), and high-ion (Si IV and C IV) absorption lines and compare the kinematics between the Stream and Leading Arm. We find that the Stream shows generally simple, single-phase kinematics, with statistically indistinguishable b-value distributions for the low-, intermediate-, and high-ion components, all dominated by narrow (b<25 km/s) components that are well aligned in velocity. In contrast, we find tentative evidence that the Leading Arm shows complex, multi-phase kinematics, with broader high ions than low ions. These results suggest that the Stream is photoionized up to C IV by a hard ionizing radiation field. This can be naturally explained by the Seyfert-flare model of Bland-Hawthorn et al. (2013, 2019), in which a burst of ionizing radiation from the Galactic Center photoionized the Stream as it passed below the south Galactic pole. The Seyfert flare is the only known source of radiation that is both powerful enough to explain the H-alpha intensity of the Stream and hard enough to photoionize Si IV and C IV to the observed levels. Studies measuring the chemical abundances of the neutral gas in star-forming galaxies (SFGs) require ionization correction factors (ICFs) to accurately measure their metal contents. In the work presented here we calculate newly improved ICFs for a sample of SFGs. These new corrections include both the contaminating ionized gas along the line of sight (ICF$_{\rm ionized}$) and unaccounted higher ionization stages in the neutral gas (ICF$_{\rm neutral}$). We make use of recently acquired spectroscopic observations taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board Hubble to measure column densities for Fe II and Fe III. Using the Fe III/Fe II ratios as well as other physical properties (i.e. $\log$[L$_{\rm UV}$], $N$(H I), T, and $Z$) we generate ad-hoc photoionization models with CLOUDY to quantify the corrections required for each of the targets. We identify a luminosity threshold of $\log$[L$_{\rm UV}$]$\sim$ 40.75 erg s$^{-1}$ above which the ICF$_{\rm neutral}$ values for nitrogen are relatively higher (ICF$_{\rm neutral}=0.05$-0.7) than those for the rest of the elements (ICF$_{\rm neutral}\sim 0.01$). This behavior indicates that for the high UV luminosity objects, N II is found in non-negligible quantities in the neutral gas, making these ICF$_{\rm neutral}$ corrections critical for determining the true abundances in the interstellar medium. In addition, we calculate ICFs from a uniform grid of models covering a wide range of physical properties typically observed in studies of SFGs and extragalactic H II regions. Project AMIGA (Absorption Maps In the Gas of Andromeda) is a large ultraviolet Hubble Space Telescope program, which has assembled a sample of 43 QSOs that pierce the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of Andromeda (M31) from R=25 to 569 kpc (25 of them probing gas from 25 kpc to about the virial radius-Rvir = 300 kpc-of M31). Our large sample provides an unparalleled look at the physical conditions and distribution of metals in the CGM of a single galaxy using ions that probe a wide range of gas phases (Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, C IV, and O VI, the latter being from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer). We find that Si III and O VI have near unity covering factor maintained all the way out to 1.2Rvir and 1.9Rvir, respectively. We show that Si III is the dominant ion over Si II and Si IV at any R. While we do not find that the properties of the CGM of M31 depend strongly on the azimuth, we show that they change remarkably around 0.3-0.5Rvir, conveying that the inner regions of the CGM of M31 are more dynamic and have more complicated multi-phase gas-structures than at R>0.5Rvir. We estimate the metal mass of the CGM within Rvir as probed by Si II, Si III, and Si IV is 2x10^7 Msun and by O VI is >8x10^7 Msun, while the baryon mass of the 10^4-10^5.5 K gas is ~4x10^10 (Z/0.3 Zsun)^(-1) Msun within Rvir. We show that different zoom-in cosmological simulations of L* galaxies better reproduce the column density profile of O VI with R than Si III or the other studied ions. We find that observations of the M31 CGM and zoom-in simulations of L* galaxies have both lower ions showing higher column density dispersion and dependence on R than higher ions, indicating that the higher ionization structures are larger and/or more broadly distributed., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal. We present new calculations of the mass inflow and outflow rates around the Milky Way, derived from a catalog of ultraviolet metal-line high velocity clouds (HVCs). These calculations are conducted by transforming the HVC velocities into the Galactic Standard of Rest (GSR) reference frame, identifying inflowing (v_GSR < 0 km/s) and outflowing (v_GSR > 0 km/s) populations, and using observational constraints on the distance, metallicity, dust content, covering fractions, and total hydrogen column density of each population. After removing HVCs associated with the Magellanic Stream and the Fermi Bubbles, we find inflow and outflow rates in cool (T~10^4 K) ionized gas of dM_in/dt >~ 0.53+/-0.17 (d/12 kpc) (Z/0.2 Z_sun)^-1 M_sun/yr and dM_out/dt >~ 0.16+/-0.06 (d/12 kpc) (Z/0.5 Z_sun)^-1 M_sun/yr. The excess of inflowing over outflowing gas suggests that the Milky Way is currently in an inflow-dominated phase, but the presence of substantial mass flux in both directions supports a Galactic fountain model, in which gas is constantly recycled between the disk and the halo. We also find that the metal flux in both directions (in and out) is indistinguishable. By comparing the outflow rate to the Galactic star formation rate, we present the first estimate of the mass loading factor (etc_HVC) of the disk-wide Milky Way wind, finding eta_HVC >~ 0.10+/-0.06 (d/12 kpc) (Z/0.5 Z_sun)^-1. Galaxies evolve under the influence of gas flows between their interstellar medium and their surrounding gaseous halos known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM). The CGM is a major reservoir of galactic baryons and metals, and plays a key role in the long cycles of accretion, feedback, and recycling of gas that drive star formation. In order to fully understand the physical processes at work within galaxies, it is therefore essential to have a firm understanding of the composition, structure, kinematics, thermodynamics, and evolution of the CGM. In this white paper we outline connections between the CGM and galactic star formation histories, internal kinematics, chemical evolution, quenching, satellite evolution, dark matter halo occupation, and the reionization of the larger-scale intergalactic medium in light of the advances that will be made on these topics in the 2020s. We argue that, in the next decade, fundamental progress on all of these major issues depends critically on improved empirical characterization and theoretical understanding of the CGM. In particular, we discuss how future advances in spatially-resolved CGM observations at high spectral resolution, broader characterization of the CGM across galaxy mass and redshift, and expected breakthroughs in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations will help resolve these major problems in galaxy evolution., Comment: Astro2020 Decadal Science White Paper

Two giant plasma lobes, known as the Fermi Bubbles, extend 10 kpc above and below the Galactic Center. Since their discovery in X-rays in 2003 (and in gamma-rays in 2010), the Bubbles have been recognized as a new morphological feature of our Galaxy and a striking example of energetic feedback from the nuclear region. They remain the subject of intense research and their origin via AGN activity or nuclear star formation is still debated. While imaging at gamma-ray, X-ray, microwave, and radio wavelengths has revealed their morphology and energetics, spectroscopy at radio and UV wavelengths has recently been used to study the kinematics and chemical abundances of outflowing gas clouds embedded in the Bubbles (the nuclear wind). Here we identify the scientific themes that have emerged from the spectroscopic studies, determine key open questions, and describe further observations needed in the next ten years to characterize the basic physical conditions in the nuclear wind and its impact on the rest of the Galaxy. Extending for over 200 degrees across the sky, the Magellanic Stream together with its Leading Arm is the most spectacular example of a gaseous stream in the local Universe. The Stream is an interwoven tail of filaments trailing the Magellanic Clouds as they orbit the Milky Way. Thought to be created by tidal forces, ram pressure, and halo interactions, the Stream is a benchmark for dynamical models of the Magellanic System, a case study for gas accretion and dwarf-galaxy accretion onto galaxies, a probe of the outer halo, and the bearer of more gas mass than all other Galactic high velocity clouds combined. If it survives to reach the Galactic disk, it may maintain or even elevate the Galactic star-formation rate. In this white paper, we emphasize the Stream's importance for many areas of Galactic astronomy, summarize key unanswered questions, and identify future observations and simulations needed to resolve them. Stellar populations are powerful tools for investigating the evolution of extragalactic environments. We present the first UV integrated-light spectroscopic observations for 15 young star clusters in the starburst M83 with a special focus on metallicity measurements. The data were obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We analyse the data applying an abundance technique previously used to study an optical set of star clusters. We estimate a central metallicity of [Z] = $+$0.20 $\pm$ 0.15 dex in agreement with those obtained through independent methods, i.e. $J$-band and blue supergiants. We estimate a UV metallicity gradient of $-$0.041 $\pm$ 0.022 dex kpc$^{-1}$ consistent with the optical metallicity gradient of $-$0.040 $\pm$ 0.032 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for $R/R_{25}<0.5$. Combining our stellar metallicities, UV and optical, with those from HII regions (strong-line abundances based on empirical calibrations) we identify two possible breaks in the gradient of M83 at galactocentric distances of $R\sim0.5$ and $1.0\:R_{25}$. If the abundance breaks are genuine, the metallicity gradient of this galaxy follows a steep-shallow-steep trend, a scenario predicted by three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations of disc galaxies. The first break is located near the corotation radius. This first steep gradient may have originated by recent star formation episodes and a relatively young bar ($<$1 Gyr). In the numerical simulations the shallow gradient is created by the effects of dilution by outflow where low-metallicity material is mixed with enriched gas. The Fermi Bubbles are two giant gamma-ray emitting lobes extending 55$^{\circ}$ above and below the Galactic Center. While the Northern Bubble has been extensively studied in ultraviolet (UV) absorption, little is known about the gas kinematics of the southern Bubble. We use UV absorption-line spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope to probe the southern Fermi Bubble using a sample of 17 background AGN projected behind or near the Bubble. We measure the incidence of high-velocity clouds (HVC), finding that four out of six sightlines passing through the Bubble show HVC absorption, versus six out of eleven passing outside. We find strong evidence that the maximum absolute LSR velocity of the HVC components decreases as a function of galactic latitude within the Bubble, for both blueshifted and redshifted components, as expected for a decelerating outflow. We explore whether the column-density ratios SiIV/SiIII, SiIV/SiII and SiIII/SiII correlate with the absolute galactic latitude within the Bubble. The Magellanic Stream and Leading Arm of HI that stretches from the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) and over 200 degrees of the Southern sky is thought to be formed from multiple encounters between the LMC and SMC. In this scenario, most of the gas in the Stream and Leading Arm is stripped from the SMC, yet recent observations have shown a bifurcation of the Trailing Arm that reveals LMC origins for some of the gas. Absorption measurements in the Stream also reveal an order of magnitude more gas than in current tidal models. We present hydrodynamical simulations of the multiple encounters between the LMC and SMC at their first pass around the Milky Way, assuming that the Clouds were more extended and gas rich in the past. Our models create filamentary structures of gas in the Trailing Stream from both the LMC and SMC. While the SMC trailing filament matches the observed Stream location, the LMC filament is offset. In addition, the total observed mass of the Stream in these models is underestimated of a factor of four when the ionized component is accounted for. Our results suggest that there should also be gas stripped from both the LMC and SMC in the Leading Arm, mirroring the bifurcation in the Trailing Stream. This prediction is consistent with recent measurements of spatial variation in chemical abundances in the Leading Arm, which show that gas from multiple sources is present, although the nature is still uncertain., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

The Leading Arm (LA) of the Magellanic Stream is a vast debris field of H I clouds connecting the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. It represents an example of active gas accretion onto the Galaxy. Previously only one chemical abundance measurement had been made in the LA. Here we present chemical abundance measurements using Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph Green Bank Telescope spectra of four sightlines passing through the LA, and three nearby sightlines that may trace outer fragments of the LA. We find low oxygen abundances, ranging from 4.0(+4.0,-2.0) percent solar to 12.6(+6.2,-4.1) percent solar, in the confirmed LA directions, with the lowest values found in the region known as LA III, farthest from the LMC. These abundances are substantially lower than the single previous measurement, S/H=35+/-7 percent solar (Lu et al. 1998), but are in agreement with those reported in the SMC filament of the trailing Stream, supporting a common origin in the SMC (not the LMC) for the majority of the LA and the trailing Stream. This provides important constraints for models of the formation of the Magellanic System. Finally, the HVCs in two of the three nearby sightlines show H I columns, kinematics, and oxygen abundances consistent with LA membership. We present and make publicly available the second data release (DR2) of the Keck Observatory Database of Ionized Absorption toward Quasars (KODIAQ) survey. KODIAQ DR2 consists of a fully-reduced sample of 300 quasars at 0.07 < z_em < 5.29 observed with HIRES at high resolution (36,000 <= R <= 103,000). DR2 contains 831 spectra available in continuum normalized form, representing a sum total exposure time of ~4.9 megaseconds on source. These co-added spectra arise from a total of 1577 individual exposures of quasars taken from the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) in raw form and uniformly processed. DR2 extends DR1 by adding 130 new quasars to the sample, including additional observations of QSOs in DR1. All new data in DR2 were obtained with the single-chip Tektronix TK2048 CCD configuration of HIRES in operation between 1995 and 2004. Comparison of ISM absorption in the UV spectrum of LS 4825, a B1 Ib-II star d=21+/-5 kpc from the Sun toward l = 1.67 deg and b = -6.63 deg, with ISM absorption toward an aligned foreground star at d < 7.0+/-1.7 kpc, allows us to isolate and study gas associated with the Milky Way nuclear wind. Spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) show low ion absorption out to d < 7 kpc ( e.g., O I, C II, Mg II, Si II, Fe II, S II) only between 0 and 40 km/s, while absorption at d > 7 kpc, ~1 kpc below the galactic plane, is complex and spans -290 to + 94 km/ s. The intermediate and high ions Si III, C IV, Si IV and N V show extremely strong absorption with multiple components from -283 to 107 km/ s implying that the ISM ~1 kpc below the galactic center has a substantial reservoir of plasma, and more gas containing C IV and N V than in the Carina OB1 association at z = 0 kpc. Abundances and physical conditions are presented for many absorption components. The high ion absorption traces cooling transition temperature plasma probably driven by the outflowing hot gas, while the extraordinary large thermal pressure, p/k ~ 10^5 cm^-3 K^-1 in an absorption component at -114 km/s probably arises from the ram pressure of the outflowing hot gas. The observations are consistent with a flow whose ionization structure in the high ions can be understood through a combination of non-equilibrium radiative cooling and turbulent mixing., Comment: pdf file contains 56 pages, 14 tables and 16 figures. We present a deep search for HI 21-cm emission from the gaseous halo of Messier 31 as part of Project AMIGA, a large program Hubble Space Telescope program to study the circumgalactic medium of the Andromeda galaxy. Our observations with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telesope target sight lines to 48 background AGNs, more than half of which have been observed in the ultraviolet with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, with impact parameters $25 \lesssim \rho \lesssim 330$ kpc ($0.1 \lesssim \rho / R_{\rm vir} \lesssim 1.1$). We do not detect any 21-cm emission toward these AGNs to limits of $N({\rm HI}) \approx 4 \times10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($5\sigma$, per 2 kpc diameter beam). This column density corresponds to an optical depth of $\sim2.5$ at the Lyman limit, thus our observations overlap with absorption line studies of Lyman limit systems at higher redshift. Our non-detections place a limit on the covering factor of such optically-thick gas around M31 to $f_c < 0.051$ (at 90\% confidence) for $\rho \leq R_{\rm vir}$. While individual clouds have previously been found in the region between M31 and M33, the covering factor of strongly optically-thick gas is quite small. Our upper limits on the covering factor are consistent with expectations from recent cosmological "zoom" simulations. Recent COS-Halos ultraviolet measurements of \HI\ absorption about an ensemble of galaxies at $z \approx 0.2$ show significantly higher covering factors within $\rho \lesssim 0.5 R_{\rm vir}$ at the same $N({\rm H I})$, although the metal ion-to-H I ratios appear to be consistent with those seen in M31., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ. We analyze new far-ultraviolet spectra of 13 quasars from the z~0.2 COS-Halos survey that cover the HI Lyman limit of 14 circumgalactic medium (CGM) systems. These data yield precise estimates or more constraining limits than previous COS-Halos measurements on the HI column densities NHI. We then apply a Monte-Carlo Markov Chain approach on 32 systems from COS-Halos to estimate the metallicity of the cool (T~10^4K) CGM gas that gives rise to low-ionization state metal lines, under the assumption of photoionization equilibrium with the extragalactic UV background. The principle results are: (1) the CGM of field L* galaxies exhibits a declining HI surface density with impact parameter Rperp (at >99.5%$ confidence), (2) the transmission of ionizing radiation through CGM gas alone is 70+/-7%; (3) the metallicity distribution function of the cool CGM is unimodal with a median of 1/3 Z_Sun and a 95% interval from ~1/50 Z_Sun to over 3x solar. The incidence of metal poor (<1/100 Z_Sun) gas is low, implying any such gas discovered along quasar sightlines is typically unrelated to L* galaxies; (4) we find an unexpected increase in gas metallicity with declining NHI (at >99.9% confidence) and, therefore, also with increasing Rperp. The high metallicity at large radii implies early enrichment; (5) A non-parametric estimate of the cool CGM gas mass is M_CGM_cool = 9.2 +/- 4.3 10^10 Msun, which together with new mass estimates for the hot CGM may resolve the galactic missing baryons problem. Future analyses of halo gas should focus on the underlying astrophysics governing the CGM, rather than processes that simply expel the medium from the halo., Comment: 26 pages with figures.
