11. Integrating Math in a Sea of Science

Abstract

In this featured lesson, entitled "Fishy Feeding Frenzy," fourth-grade students engage in a classic science activity that requires them to experience the interdependent relationships of organisms in an ecosystem. The students explore how adaptations increase the survival of a member of a species by participating in an active "fishy feeding frenzy." The fishy feeding frenzy lesson addresses "Next Generation Science Standards" ("NGSS") as students compete for survival within an ecosystem while exploring structure and function of given organisms. The fishy frenzy has several opportunities for mathematics concepts to come to the forefront of science learning by using the "Common Core" Data Analysis standards as well as the Mathematical Practices. This lesson demonstrates how math can come to life in science teaching. Students can self-assess using the Fishy Feeding Frenzy rubric. This rubric will provide an overall assessment of mathematical thinking, communication skills, and science conceptual understanding.

12. Preservice Elementary Science Project. Interviews of Elementary Science Presidential Awardees: Patterns That Portray Excellence in Science Teaching.

Abstract

The objective of this naturalistic study was to describe the preservice, inservice, and life experiences of exemplary science teachers to determine what kinds of experiences have made a difference in their teaching practices. Six Elementary Science Presidential Awardees from Texas were identified by the Preservice Elementary Science Action Team of the Texas Statewide Science Systemic Initiative as the group of teachers to be studied. Interview questions were designed to focus on career history descriptions, attitudes regarding excellence in science teaching, significant preservice and inservice experiences, and individuals who influenced their career development. Analysis of the interview data revealed the following categories: (1) Significant Life History; (2) Mentorships, Collaborations, and Networks; (3) Characteristics of Exemplary Science Teachers; (4) Preservice Preparation Experiences; (5) Inservice Experiences; (6) The Nature of Teaching, Learning, and Science; and (7) Perceived Science Teaching Barriers. Implications for strengthening the preservice preparation of prospective elementary science teachers are discussed. Appendices include interview protocols. Contains 14 references. (Author/PVD)

16. Opening Doors, Hearts and Minds

A panel discussion, "Opening Doors, Hearts and Minds," was hosted at the 2006 annual COEO conference. Four dedicated Torontonians shared how they interpret outdoor environmental education and environmental education in what they do and offered suggestions as to how their work might be integrated in diverse urban communities. Tafari Anyika is the founder of Umoja Learning Circle, a community-based African-centred school at Islington and Albion. Yuga Juma Onziga is the founder of the Environmental Centre for New Canadians (ECENECA)--a non-profit organization working to promote nature-based learning with indigenous peoples of the world. Eduardo Garay is a board member of FutureWatch--a non-profit organization devoted to providing support, training and hands-on experiential learning to build capacity and sustain community efforts. And finally, Alison Neilson is a professor of Education at OISE, University of Toronto, and Environmental Studies and Environmental Sociology at Queen's University. This article presents a summary of the panelists' rich presentations.

24. Mentoring the Beginning Teacher during Student Teaching: An Illustrative Case Study

Abstract

Mentoring and support of beginning teachers is a key element of reducing teacher attrition. Most schools have implemented an induction program with assigned mentors for inexperienced teachers. However, the problem of attrition begins before the induction year of teaching, given that many certified teachers never enter a classroom. This illustrative case study involves a young teacher who almost quit the profession during student teaching, thereby demonstrating the need for mentoring during that time. Good psychological support, along with responsive mentoring, helped her to become an effective teacher.

Abstract

Despite its image as an all-American city, downtown Peoria, Illinois, home of Bradley University, is also a place of strip clubs and violent crime. For undergraduates, it's a risky environment in which to conduct field research. Edward Lamoureux, an associate professor in Bradley's multimedia program, saw a better place in the virtual world Second Life. This fall he is teaching his second ethnography class online in a computer-created environment featuring buildings, lakes, and avatars--digital characters who fly from place to place, chat, and form communities. Students have analyzed, among other topics, online hackers (known as "griefers" in Second Life) and avatar fans of musicians who perform in Second Life. Flying avatars, virtual fan clubs, and computer-drawn lakes seem, at first glance, to be of little educational value. Ever since Linden Lab, a San Francisco-based company, unveiled Second Life in 2003, professors and college students have flocked to it. In this article, six educators' Second Life stories are presented.

Abstract

The re-vegetation of mining wastes with native plants is a comparatively low-cost solution for mine reclamation. However, re-vegetation fails when extreme pH values, low organic matter, or high concentrations of phytotoxic elements inhibit plant establishment and growth. Our aim was to determine whether the combined addition of municipal waste compost and diazotrophic endophytes (i.e., microorganisms that fix atmospheric N2 and live within plants) could improve plant growth, organic matter accumulation, and phytostabilization of trace element contaminants in two types of hard rock mine waste. We grew a widespread native perennial grass, Bouteloua curtipendula, for one month in alkaline waste rock (porphyry copper mine) and tailings (Ag-Pb-Au mine, amended with dolomite) sourced from southeastern Arizona, United States. B. curtipendula tolerated elevated concentrations of multiple phytotoxic trace elements in the tailings (Mn, Pb, Zn), stabilizing them in roots without foliar translocation. Adding compost and endophyte seed coats improved plant growth, microbial biomass, and organic matter accumulation despite stark differences in the geochemical and physical characteristics of the mining wastes. The widespread grass B. curtipendula is a potential candidate for re-vegetating mine wastes when seeded with soil additives to increase pH and with microbial and organic amendments to increase plant growth. This study quantifies improvements to plant growth, soil fertility, and trace element stabilization with a municipal waste compost topdressing and diazotrophic endophyte seed coating in two common hard rock mining wastes of the western United States. It establishes that a widespread perennial grass, Bouteloua curtipendula, can grow despite high concentrations of phytotoxic trace elements and minimal soil nutrients, and stabilizes trace elements on or in its roots, making it a suitable option for re-vegetation or phytostabilization of hard rock mining wastes. 36. New Systems Keep a Close Eye on Online Students

Abstract

Tucked away in a 1,200-page bill now in Congress is a small paragraph that could lead distance-education institutions to require spy cameras in their students' homes. It sounds Orwellian, but the paragraph--part of legislation renewing the Higher Education Act--is all but assured of becoming law. No one in Congress objects to it. The paragraph is actually about clamping down on cheating. It says that an institution that offers an online program must prove that an enrolled student is the same person who does the work. The language is spurring some colleges to try technologies that authenticate online test takers by reading their fingerprints, watching them via web cameras, or recording their keystrokes. Some colleges claim there are advantages for students: The devices allow them to take tests anytime, anywhere. Many students must now travel to distant locations so a proctor can watch them take exams on paper. Some college officials are wary of the technologies, noting that they are run by third-party vendors that may not safeguard students' privacy. Among the information vendors collect are students' fingerprints, and possibly even images from inside their homes.

40. Providing Online Textbooks to the Developing World

Abstract

Learning is valuable, but in Africa it is more than that: It is prohibitively expensive. In Ethiopia, where the per-capita income is about $100 a year, a single textbook at Addis Ababa University can cost $50. To get more textbooks to students in developing nations, two people are leading an ambitious project to produce and freely distribute 1,000 original titles online. This article discusses the Global Text Project initiated by Richard T. Watson, interim head of the department of management information systems at the University of Georgia, and Donald J. McCubbrey, a professor of information technology and electronic commerce at the University of Denver. The project was developed after Watson told McCubbrey that he had each of his graduate students write a chapter for an XML-programming book because he could not find a textbook on the topic. About the same time, McCubbrey wrote a paper on using free online content in teaching. The endeavor is part of a larger movement to provide free academic material online. The Global Text Project intends to publish books in Arabic, Chinese, English, and Spanish. Already, the University of Concepcion, in Chile, has agreed to donate about 350 books, written by faculty members, for digitization in the Global Text library. Global Text differs from other wiki efforts in that scholars have editorial control of their product.
