We present new near-ultraviolet (NUV, $\lambda$ = 2479 $-$ 3306 $\r{A}$) transmission spectroscopy of KELT-9b, the hottest known exoplanet, obtained with the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment ($CUTE$) CubeSat. Two transits were observed on September 28th and September 29th 2022, referred to as Visits 1 and 2 respectively. Using a combined transit and systematics model for each visit, the best-fit broadband NUV light curves are R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.136$_{0.0146}^{0.0125}$ for Visit 1 and R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.111$_{0.0190}^{0.0162}$ for Visit 2, appearing an average of 1.54$\times$ larger in the NUV than at optical wavelengths. While the systematics between the two visits vary considerably, the two broadband NUV light curves are consistent with each other. A transmission spectrum with 25 $\r{A}$ bins suggests a general trend of excess absorption in the NUV, consistent with expectations for ultra-hot Jupiters. Although we see an extended atmosphere in the NUV, the reduced data lack the sensitivity to probe individual spectral lines.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

We present the discovery and characterization of two warm mini-Neptunes transiting the K3V star TOI-815 in a K-M binary system. Analysis of the spectra and rotation period reveal it to be a young star with an age of $200^{+400}_{-200}$Myr. TOI-815b has a 11.2-day period and a radius of 2.94$\pm$0.05$\it{R_{\rm\mathrm{\oplus}}}$ with transits observed by TESS, CHEOPS, ASTEP, and LCOGT. The outer planet, TOI-815c, has a radius of 2.62$\pm$0.10$\it{R_{\rm\mathrm{\oplus}}}$, based on observations of three non-consecutive transits with TESS, while targeted CHEOPS photometry and radial velocity follow-up with ESPRESSO were required to confirm the 35-day period. ESPRESSO confirmed the planetary nature of both planets and measured masses of 7.6$\pm$1.5 $\it{M_{\rm \mathrm{\oplus}}}$ ($\rho_\mathrm{P}$=1.64$^{+0.33}_{-0.31}$gcm$^{-3}$) and 23.5$\pm$2.4$\it{M_{\rm\mathrm{\oplus}}}$ ($\rho_\mathrm{P}$=7.2$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$gcm$^{-3}$) respectively. Thus, the planets have very different masses, unlike the usual similarity of masses in compact multi-planet systems. Moreover, our statistical analysis of mini-Neptunes orbiting FGK stars suggests that weakly irradiated planets tend to have higher bulk densities compared to those suffering strong irradiation. This could be ascribed to their cooler atmospheres, which are more compressed and denser. Internal structure modeling of TOI-815b suggests it likely has a H-He atmosphere constituting a few percent of the total planet mass, or higher if the planet is assumed to have no water. In contrast, the measured mass and radius of TOI-815c can be explained without invoking any atmosphere, challenging planetary formation theories. Finally, we infer from our measurements that the star is viewed close to pole-on, which implies a spin-orbit misalignment at the 3$\sigma$ level., Comment: 24 pages, 27 figures, 6 tables

Observational breakthroughs in the exoplanet field of the last decade motivated the development of numerous theoretical models describing atmospheres and mass loss, which is believed to be one of the main drivers of planetary evolution. We aim to outline for which types of close-in planets in the Neptune-mass range the accurate treatment of photoionisation effects is most relevant concerning atmospheric escape and the parameters relevant for interpreting observations. We developed the CHAIN (Cloudy e Hydro Ancora INsieme) model combining 1D hydrodynamic upper atmosphere model with the non-LTE photoionisation and radiative transfer code Cloudy accounting for photochemistry, detailed atomic level populations, and chemical reactions for all elements up to zinc. We apply CHAIN to model the upper atmospheres of a range of Neptune-like planets with masses between 1 and 50 M$_{\oplus}$, varying also the orbital parameters. For the majority of warm and hot Neptunes, we find slower and denser outflows, with lower ion fractions, compared to the predictions of the hydrodynamic model alone. Furthermore, we find significantly different temperature profiles between CHAIN and the hydrodynamic model alone, though the peak values are similar for similar atmospheric compositions. The mass-loss rates predicted by CHAIN are higher for hot, strongly irradiated planets and lower for more moderate planets. All differences between the two models are strongly correlated with the amount of high-energy irradiation. Finally, we find that the hydrodynamic effects impact significantly ionisation and heating. The impact of the precise photoionisation treatment provided by Cloudy strongly depends on the system parameters. Ultraviolet observations of Ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs), exoplanets with temperatures over 2000\,K, provide us with an opportunity to investigate if and how atmospheric escape shapes their upper atmosphere. Near-ultraviolet transit spectroscopy offers a unique tool to study this process owing to the presence of strong metal lines and a bright photospheric continuum as the light source against which the absorbing gas is observed. WASP-189b is one of the hottest planets discovered to date, with a day-side temperature of about 3400\,K orbiting a bright A-type star. We present the first near-ultraviolet observations of WASP-189b, acquired with the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment ($CUTE$). $CUTE$ is a 6U NASA-funded ultraviolet spectroscopy mission, dedicated to monitoring short-period transiting planets. WASP-189b was one of the $CUTE$ early science targets and was observed during three consecutive transits in March 2022. We present an analysis of the $CUTE$ observations and results demonstrating near-ultraviolet (2500--3300~\AA) broadband transit depth ($1.08^{+0.08}_{-0.08}\%$) of about twice the visual transit depth indicating that the planet has an extended, hot upper atmosphere with a temperature of about 15000\,K and a moderate mass loss rate of about \SI{4e8}{\kg\per\second}. We observe absorption by Mg{\sc ii} lines ($R_p/R_s$ of $0.212^{+0.038}_{-0.061}$) beyond the Roche lobe at $>$4$\sigma$ significance in the transmission spectrum at a resolution of 10~\AA, while at lower resolution (100~\AA), we observe a quasi-continuous absorption signal consistent with a "forest" of low-ionization metal absorption dominated by Fe{\sc ii}. We present high-resolution transmission spectroscopy of WASP-76b with GRACES/Gemini North obtained as part of the ExoGemS survey. With a broad spectral range of 400-1050 nm and a relatively high resolution of ~66,000, these observations are particularly well-suited to searching for atomic and molecular atmospheric species via the Doppler cross-correlation technique. We recover absorption features due to neutral iron (Fe I), sodium (Na I), and ionized calcium (Ca II) at high significance (>5$\sigma$), and investigate possible atmospheric temperatures and wind speeds. We also report tentative (>3$\sigma$) detections of Li I, K I, Cr I, and V I in the atmosphere of WASP-76b. Finally, we report non-detections of a number of other species, some of which have previously been detected with other instruments. Through model injection/recovery tests, we demonstrate that many of these species are not expected to be detected in our observations. These results allow us to place GRACES and the ExoGemS survey in context with other high-resolution optical spectrographs., Comment: 33 pages, 31 figures. GJ 367 is a bright (V $\approx$ 10.2) M1 V star that has been recently found to host a transiting ultra-short period sub-Earth on a 7.7 hr orbit. With the aim of improving the planetary mass and radius and unveiling the inner architecture of the system, we performed an intensive radial velocity follow-up campaign with the HARPS spectrograph -- collecting 371 high-precision measurements over a baseline of nearly 3 years -- and combined our Doppler measurements with new TESS observations from sectors 35 and 36. We found that GJ 367 b has a mass of $M_\mathrm{b}$ = 0.633 $\pm$ 0.050 M$_{\oplus}$ and a radius of $R_\mathrm{b}$ = 0.699 $\pm$ 0.024 R$_{\oplus}$, corresponding to precisions of 8% and 3.4%, respectively. This implies a planetary bulk density of $\rho_\mathrm{b}$ = 10.2 $\pm$ 1.3 g cm$^{-3}$, i.e., 85% higher than Earth's density. We revealed the presence of two additional non transiting low-mass companions with orbital periods of $\sim$11.5 and 34 days and minimum masses of $M_\mathrm{c}\sin{i_\mathrm{c}}$ = 4.13 $\pm$ 0.36 M$_{\oplus}$ and $M_\mathrm{d}\sin{i_\mathrm{d}}$ = 6.03 $\pm$ 0.49 M$_{\oplus}$, respectively, which lie close to the 3:1 mean motion commensurability. GJ 367 b joins the small class of high-density planets, namely the class of super-Mercuries, being the densest ultra-short period small planet known to date. Thanks to our precise mass and radius estimates, we explored the potential internal composition and structure of GJ 367 b, and found that it is expected to have an iron core with a mass fraction of 0.91$^{+0.07}_{-0.23}$. How this iron core is formed and how such a high density is reached is still not clear, and we discuss the possible pathways of formation of such a small ultra-dense planet., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures. The Kepler satellite has revealed a gap between sub-Neptunes and super-Earths that atmospheric escape models had predicted as an evaporation valley. We seek to contrast results from a simple XUV-driven energy-limited (ELIM) escape model against those from a direct hydrodynamic (HYDRO) model. Besides XUV-driven escape, the latter also includes the boil-off regime. We couple the two models to an internal structure model and follow the planets' temporal evolution over Gyr. To see the population-wide imprint of the two models, we first employ a rectangular grid in initial conditions. We then study the slope of the valley also for initial conditions derived from the Kepler planets. For the rectangular grid, we find that the power-law slope of the valley with respect to orbital period is -0.18 and -0.11 in the ELIM and HYDRO model, respectively. For the initial conditions derived from the Kepler planets, the results are similar (-0.16 and -0.10). While the slope found with the ELIM model is steeper than observed, the one of the HYDRO model is in excellent agreement with observations. The reason for the shallower slope is caused by the two regimes in which the ELIM model fails: First, puffy planets at low stellar irradiation. For them, boil-off dominates mass loss. However, boil-off is absent in the ELIM model, thus it underestimates escape relative to HYDRO. Second, massive compact planets at high XUV irradiation. For them, the ELIM approximation overestimates escape relative to the HYDRO case because of cooling by thermal conduction, neglected in the ELIM model. The two effects act together in concert to yield in the HYDRO model a shallower slope of the valley that agrees very well with observations. We conclude that an escape model that includes boil-off and a more realistic treatment of cooling mechanisms can reproduce one of the most important constraints, the valley slope., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted to A&A

We report the discovery of two warm sub-Neptunes transiting the bright (G = 9.5 mag) K-dwarf HD 15906 (TOI 461, TIC 4646810). This star was observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in sectors 4 and 31, revealing two small transiting planets. The inner planet, HD 15906 b, was detected with an unambiguous period but the outer planet, HD 15906 c, showed only two transits separated by $\sim$ 734 days, leading to 36 possible values of its period. We performed follow-up observations with the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) to confirm the true period of HD 15906 c and improve the radius precision of the two planets. From TESS, CHEOPS and additional ground-based photometry, we find that HD 15906 b has a radius of 2.24 $\pm$ 0.08 R$_\oplus$ and a period of 10.924709 $\pm$ 0.000032 days, whilst HD 15906 c has a radius of 2.93$^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$ R$_\oplus$ and a period of 21.583298$^{+0.000052}_{-0.000055}$ days. Assuming zero bond albedo and full day-night heat redistribution, the inner and outer planet have equilibrium temperatures of 668 $\pm$ 13 K and 532 $\pm$ 10 K, respectively. The HD 15906 system has become one of only six multiplanet systems with two warm ($\lesssim$ 700 K) sub-Neptune sized planets transiting a bright star (G $\leq$ 10 mag). HIP 9618 (HD 12572, TOI-1471, TIC 306263608) is a bright ($G=9.0$ mag) solar analogue. TESS photometry revealed the star to have two candidate planets with radii of $3.9 \pm 0.044$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 b) and $3.343 \pm 0.039$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 c). While the 20.77291 day period of HIP 9618 b was measured unambiguously, HIP 9618 c showed only two transits separated by a 680-day gap in the time series, leaving many possibilities for the period. To solve this issue, CHEOPS performed targeted photometry of period aliases to attempt to recover the true period of planet c, and successfully determined the true period to be 52.56349 d. High-resolution spectroscopy with HARPS-N, SOPHIE and CAFE revealed a mass of $10.0 \pm 3.1 M_\oplus$ for HIP 9618 b, which, according to our interior structure models, corresponds to a $6.8\pm1.4\%$ gas fraction. HIP 9618 c appears to have a lower mass than HIP 9618 b, with a 3-sigma upper limit of $< 18M_\oplus$. Follow-up and archival RV measurements also reveal a clear long-term trend which, when combined with imaging and astrometric information, reveal a low-mass companion ($0.08^{+0.12}_{-0.05} M_\odot$) orbiting at $26^{+19}_{-11}$ au. This detection makes HIP 9618 one of only five bright ($K<8$ mag) transiting multi-planet systems known to host a planet with $P>50$ d, opening the door for the atmospheric characterisation of warm ($T_{\rm eq}<750$ K) sub-Neptunes., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables. In the near-UV and optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-121b, recent observations have detected strong absorption features of Mg, Fe, Ca, and H$\alpha$, extending outside of the planet's Roche lobe. Studying these atomic signatures can directly trace the escaping atmosphere and constrain the energy balance of the upper atmosphere. To understand these features, we introduce a detailed forward model by expanding the capability of a one-dimensional model of the upper atmosphere and hydrodynamic escape to include important processes of atomic metal species. The hydrodynamic model is coupled to a Ly$\alpha$ Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculation to simulate the excited hydrogen population and associated heating/ionization effects. Using this model, we interpret the detected atomic features in the transmission spectrum of WASP-121b and explore the impact of metals and excited hydrogen on its upper atmosphere. We demonstrate the use of multiple absorption lines to impose stronger constraints on the properties of the upper atmosphere than the analysis of a single transmission feature can provide. In addition, the model shows that line broadening due to atmospheric outflow driven by the Roche lobe overflow is necessary to explain the observed line widths and highlights the importance of the high mass-loss rate caused by the Roche lobe overflow that requires careful consideration of the structure of the lower and middle atmosphere. We present here the signal-to-noise (S/N) calculator developed for the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) mission. CUTE is a 6U CubeSat operating in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) observing exoplanetary transits to study their upper atmospheres. CUTE was launched into a low-Earth orbit in September 2021 and it is currently gathering scientific data. As part of the S/N calculator, we also present the error propagation for computing transit depth uncertainties starting from the S/N of the original spectroscopic observations. The CUTE S/N calculator is currently extensively used for target selection and scheduling. The benchmark hot Jupiter HD 189733b has been a key target to lay out the foundations of comparative planetology for giant exoplanets. As such, HD 189733b has been extensively studied across the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we report the observation and analysis of three transit light curves of HD 189733b obtained with {\Hubble}/STIS in the near ultraviolet, the last remaining unexplored spectral window to be probed with present-day instrumentation for this planet. The NUV is a unique window for atmospheric mass-loss studies owing to the strong resonance lines and large photospheric flux. Overall, from a low-resolution analysis ($R=50$) we found that the planet's near-ultraviolet spectrum is well characterized by a relatively flat baseline, consistent with the optical-infrared transmission, plus two regions at $\sim$2350 and $\sim$2600 {\AA} that exhibit a broad and significant excess absorption above the continuum. From an analysis at a higher resolution ($R=4700$), we found that the transit depths at the core of the magnesium resonance lines are consistent with the surrounding continuum. We discarded the presence of \ion{Mg}{ii} absorption in the upper atmosphere at a $\sim$2--4$\sigma$ confidence level, whereas we could place no significant constraint for \ion{Mg}{i} absorption. These broad absorption features coincide with the expected location of \ion{Fe}{ii} bands; however, solar-abundance hydrodynamic models of the upper atmosphere are not able to reproduce the amplitude of these features with iron absorption. Such scenario would require a combination of little to no iron condensation in the lower-atmosphere, super-solar metallicities, and a mechanism to enhance the absorption features (such as zonal wind broadening). Atmospheric escape is a fundamental process that affects the structure, composition, and evolution of many planets. The signatures of escape are detectable on close-in, gaseous exoplanets orbiting bright stars, owing to the high levels of extreme-ultraviolet irradiation from their parent stars. The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a CubeSat mission designed to take advantage of the near-ultraviolet stellar brightness distribution to conduct a survey of the extended atmospheres of nearby close-in planets. The CUTE payload is a magnifying NUV (2479~--~3306 Ang) spectrograph fed by a rectangular Cassegrain telescope (206mm x 84mm); the spectrogram is recorded on a back-illuminated, UV-enhanced CCD. The science payload is integrated into a 6U Blue Canyon Technology XB1 bus. CUTE was launched into a polar, low-Earth orbit on 27 September 2021 and has been conducting this transit spectroscopy survey following an on-orbit commissioning period. This paper presents the mission motivation, development path, and demonstrates the potential for small satellites to conduct this type of science by presenting initial on-orbit science observations. The population of planets smaller than approximately $1.7~R_\oplus$ is widely interpreted as consisting of rocky worlds, generally referred to as super-Earths. This picture is largely corroborated by radial-velocity (RV) mass measurements for close-in super-Earths but lacks constraints at lower insolations. Here we present the results of a detailed study of the Kepler-138 system using 13 Hubble and Spitzer transit observations of the warm-temperate $1.51\pm0.04~R_\oplus$ planet Kepler-138 d ($T_{\mathrm{eq, A_B=0.3}}$~350 K) combined with new Keck/HIRES RV measurements of its host star. We find evidence for a volatile-rich "water world" nature of Kepler-138 d, with a large fraction of its mass contained in a thick volatile layer. This finding is independently supported by transit timing variations, RV observations ($M_d=2.1_{-0.7}^{+0.6}~M_\oplus$), as well as the flat optical/IR transmission spectrum. Quantitatively, we infer a composition of $11_{-4}^{+3}$\% volatiles by mass or ~51% by volume, with a 2000 km deep water mantle and atmosphere on top of a core with an Earth-like silicates/iron ratio. Any hypothetical hydrogen layer consistent with the observations ($<0.003~M_\oplus$) would have swiftly been lost on a ~10 Myr timescale. The bulk composition of Kepler-138 d therefore resembles those of the icy moons rather than the terrestrial planets in the solar system. We conclude that not all super-Earth-sized planets are rocky worlds, but that volatile-rich water worlds exist in an overlapping size regime, especially at lower insolations. Finally, our photodynamical analysis also reveals that Kepler-138 c ($R_c=1.51 \pm 0.04~R_\oplus$, $M_c=2.3_{-0.5}^{+0.6}~M_\oplus$) is a slightly warmer twin of Kepler-138 d, i.e., another water world in the same system, and we infer the presence of Kepler-138 e, a likely non-transiting planet at the inner edge of the habitable zone., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy. 4 main figures, 10 extended data figures, 13 supplementary figures. 4 tables

We employ planetary evolution modeling to reproduce the MR distribution of the 198 so far detected planets with mass and radius measured to the <45% and <15% level, respectively, and less massive than 108Me. We simultaneously account for atmospheric escape, based on the results of hydrodynamic models, and thermal evolution, based on planetary structure evolution models. Since high-energy stellar radiation affects atmospheric evolution, we account for the entire range of possible stellar rotation histories. To set the planetary parameters at formation, we use analytical approximations based on formation models. Finally, we build a grid of synthetic planets with parameters reflecting those of the observed distribution. The predicted radius spread reproduces well the observed MR distribution, except for two distinct groups of outliers (~20% of the population). The first one consists of close-in Saturn-mass planets with Jupiter-like radii for which we underpredict the radius likely because it lacks additional heating similar to that responsible for inflation in hot Jupiters. The second group consists of warm sub-Neptunes, which should host massive primordial H-dominated atmospheres, but instead present high densities indicative of small gaseous envelopes. This suggests that their formation, internal structure, and evolution are different from that of atmospheric evolution through the escape of H-dominated envelopes accreted onto rocky cores. The observed characteristics of low-mass planets (<10-15Me) strongly depend on the impact of atmospheric escape, and thus on the evolution of the host star, while primordial parameters are less relevant. The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a 6U NASA CubeSat carrying on-board a low-resolution, near-ultraviolet (2479-3306 A) spectrograph. It has a Cassegrain telescope with a rectangular primary to maximize the collecting area, given the shape of the satellite bus, and an aberration correcting grating to improve the image quality, and thus spectral resolution. CUTE, launched on the 27th of September 2021 to a Low Earth Orbit, is designed to monitor transiting extra-solar planets orbiting bright, nearby stars to improve our understanding of planet atmospheric escape and star-planet interaction processes. We present here the CUTE autONomous daTa ReductiOn pipeLine (CONTROL), developed for reducing CUTE data. The pipeline has been structured with a modular approach, which also considers scalability and adaptability to other missions carrying on-board a long-slit spectrograph. The CUTE data simulator has been used to generate synthetic observations used for developing and testing the pipeline functionalities. We present the discovery of two exoplanets transiting TOI-836 (TIC 440887364) using data from TESS Sector 11 and Sector 38. TOI-836 is a bright ($T = 8.5$ mag), high proper motion ($\sim\,200$ mas yr$^{-1}$), low metallicity ([Fe/H]$\approx\,-0.28$) K-dwarf with a mass of $0.68\pm0.05$ M$_{\odot}$ and a radius of $0.67\pm0.01$ R$_{\odot}$. We obtain photometric follow-up observations with a variety of facilities, and we use these data-sets to determine that the inner planet, TOI-836 b, is a $1.70\pm0.07$ R$_{\oplus}$ super-Earth in a 3.82 day orbit, placing it directly within the so-called 'radius valley'. The outer planet, TOI-836 c, is a $2.59\pm0.09$ R$_{\oplus}$ mini-Neptune in an 8.60 day orbit. Radial velocity measurements reveal that TOI-836 b has a mass of $4.5\pm0.9$ M$_{\oplus}$ , while TOI-836 c has a mass of $9.6\pm2.6$ M$_{\oplus}$. Photometric observations show Transit Timing Variations (TTVs) on the order of 20 minutes for TOI-836 c, although there are no detectable TTVs for TOI-836 b. The TTVs of planet TOI-836 c may be caused by an undetected exterior planet.

Detections of molecules in the atmosphere of gas giant exoplanets allow us to investigate the physico-chemical properties of the atmospheres. Their inferred chemical composition is used as tracer of planet formation and evolution mechanisms. Currently, an increasing number of detections is showing a possible rich chemistry of the hotter gaseous planets, but whether this extends to cooler giants is still unknown. We observed four transits of WASP-80 b, a warm transiting giant planet orbiting a late-K dwarf star with the near-infrared GIANO-B spectrograph installed at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and performed high resolution transmission spectroscopy analysis. We report the detection of several molecular species in its atmosphere. Combining the four nights and comparing our transmission spectrum to planetary atmosphere models containing the signature of individual molecules within the cross-correlation framework, we find the presence of H2O, CH4, NH3 and HCN with high significance, tentative detection of CO2, and inconclusive results for C2H2 and CO. A qualitative interpretation of these results, using physically motivated models, suggests an atmosphere consistent with solar composition and the presence of disequilibrium chemistry and we therefore recommend the inclusion of the latter in future modelling of sub-1000K planets., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. Context: TOI-2076 is a transiting three-planet system of sub-Neptunes orbiting a bright (G = 8.9 mag), young ($340\pm80$ Myr) K-type star. Although a validated planetary system, the orbits of the two outer planets were unconstrained as only two non-consecutive transits were seen in TESS photometry. This left 11 and 7 possible period aliases for each. Aims: To reveal the true orbits of these two long-period planets, precise photometry targeted on the highest-probability period aliases is required. Long-term monitoring of transits in multi-planet systems can also help constrain planetary masses through TTV measurements. Methods: We used the MonoTools package to determine which aliases to follow, and then performed space-based and ground-based photometric follow-up of TOI-2076 c and d with CHEOPS, SAINT-EX, and LCO telescopes. Results: CHEOPS observations revealed a clear detection for TOI-2076 c at $P=21.01538^{+0.00084}_{-0.00074}$ d, and allowed us to rule out three of the most likely period aliases for TOI-2076 d. Ground-based photometry further enabled us to rule out remaining aliases and confirm the $P=35.12537\pm0.00067$ d alias. These observations also improved the radius precision of all three sub-Neptunes to $2.518\pm0.036$, $3.497\pm0.043$, and $3.232\pm0.063$ $R_\oplus$. Our observations also revealed a clear anti-correlated TTV signal between planets b and c likely caused by their proximity to the 2:1 resonance, while planets c and d appear close to a 5:3 period commensurability, although model degeneracy meant we were unable to retrieve robust TTV masses. Their inflated radii, likely due to extended H-He atmospheres, combined with low insolation makes all three planets excellent candidates for future comparative transmission spectroscopy with JWST., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure, 8 tables. The role of charge exchange in shaping exoplanet photoevaporation remains a topic of contention. Exchange of electrons between stellar wind protons from the exoplanet's host star and neutral hydrogen from the planet's wind has been proposed as a mechanism to create "energetic neutral atoms" (ENAs), which could explain the high absorption line velocities observed in systems where mass loss is occurring. In this paper we present results from 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the mass loss of a planet similar to HD 209458b. We self-consistently launch a planetary wind by calculating the ionization and heating resulting from incident high-energy radiation, inject a stellar wind into the simulation, and allow electron exchange between the stellar and planetary winds. We predict the potential production of ENAs by the wind-wind interaction analytically, then present the results of our simulations, which confirm the analytic limits. Within the limits of our hydrodynamic simulation, we find that charge exchange with the stellar wind properties examined here is unable to explain the absorption observed at high Doppler velocities., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1906.00075

We report the discovery and characterisation of a pair of sub-Neptunes transiting the bright K-dwarf TOI-1064 (TIC 79748331), initially detected in TESS photometry. To characterise the system, we performed and retrieved CHEOPS, TESS, and ground-based photometry, HARPS high-resolution spectroscopy, and Gemini speckle imaging. We characterise the host star and determine $T_{\rm eff, \star}=4734\pm67$ K, $R_{\star}=0.726\pm0.007$ $R_{\odot}$, and $M_{\star}=0.748\pm0.032$ $M_{\odot}$. We present a novel detrending method based on PSF shape-change modelling and demonstrate its suitability to correct flux variations in CHEOPS data. We confirm the planetary nature of both bodies and find that TOI-1064 b has an orbital period of $P_{\rm b}=6.44387\pm0.00003$ d, a radius of $R_{\rm b}=2.59\pm0.04$ $R_{\oplus}$, and a mass of $M_{\rm b}=13.5_{-1.8}^{+1.7}$ $M_{\oplus}$, whilst TOI-1064 c has an orbital period of $P_{\rm c}=12.22657^{+0.00005}_{-0.00004}$ d, a radius of $R_{\rm c}=2.65\pm0.04$ $R_{\oplus}$, and a 3$\sigma$ upper mass limit of 8.5 ${\rm M_{\oplus}}$. From the high-precision photometry we obtain radius uncertainties of $\sim$1.6%, allowing us to conduct internal structure and atmospheric escape modelling. TOI-1064 b is one of the densest, well-characterised sub-Neptunes, with a tenuous atmosphere that can be explained by the loss of a primordial envelope following migration through the protoplanetary disc. It is likely that TOI-1064 c has an extended atmosphere due to the tentative low density, however further RVs are needed to confirm this scenario and the similar radii, different masses nature of this system. The high-precision data and modelling of TOI-1064 b are important for planets in this region of mass-radius space, and it allows us to identify a trend in bulk density-stellar metallicity for massive sub-Neptunes that may hint at the formation of this population of planets., Comment: 30 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables including the Appendix; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Oxygen is a constituent of many of the most abundant molecules detected in exoplanetary atmospheres and a key ingredient for tracking how and where a planet formed. In particular, the OI 777.4 nm triplet is used to probe airglow and aurora on the Earth and the oxygen abundance in stellar atmospheres, but has not been detected in an exoplanet atmosphere before. We present a definite ground-based detection of the neutral oxygen 777.4 nm triplet lines in the transmission spectrum of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-9b, the hottest known giant planet. The synthetic spectrum computed employing novel non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiative transfer calculations matches the data significantly better compared to the one computed assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium. These NLTE radiative transfer calculations imply a mass-loss rate of 10^8-10^9 kg s-1, which exceeds the lower limit of 10^7-10^8 kg s-1 required to facilitate the escape of oxygen and iron from the atmosphere. Assuming a solar oxygen abundance, the NLTE model points towards the need of microturbulence and macroturbulence broadening of 3.0pm0.7 km s-1 and 13pm5 km s-1, respectively, indicative of the presence of fast winds in the middle and upper atmosphere. Recent observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b have revealed a diversity of atmospheric species. Here we present new high-resolution transit spectroscopy of WASP-76b with GRACES at the Gemini North Observatory, serving as a baseline for the Large and Long Program "Exploring the Diversity of Exoplanet Atmospheres at High Spectral Resolution" (Exoplanets with Gemini Spectroscopy, or ExoGemS for short). With a broad spectral range of $400 - 1050$ nm, these observations allow us to search for a suite of atomic species. We recover absorption features due to neutral sodium (Na I), and report a new detection of the ionized calcium (Ca II) triplet at ~ $850$ nm in the atmosphere of WASP-76b, complementing a previous detection of the Ca II H & K lines. The triplet has line depths of $0.295 \pm 0.034$% at ~ $849.2$ nm, $0.574 \pm 0.041$% at ~ $854.2$ nm, and $0.454 \pm 0.024$% at ~ $866.2$ nm, corresponding to effective radii close to (but within) the planet's Roche radius. These measured line depths are significantly larger than those predicted by model LTE and NLTE spectra obtained on the basis of a pressure-temperature profile computed assuming radiative equilibrium. The discrepancy suggests that the layers probed by our observations are either significantly hotter than predicted by radiative equilibrium and/or in a hydrodynamic state. Exoplanets transiting bright nearby stars are key objects for advancing our knowledge of planetary formation and evolution. The wealth of photons from the host star gives detailed access to the atmospheric, interior, and orbital properties of the planetary companions. $\nu^2$ Lupi (HD 136352) is a naked-eye ($V = 5.78$) Sun-like star that was discovered to host three low-mass planets with orbital periods of 11.6, 27.6, and 107.6 days via radial velocity monitoring (Udry et al. 2019). The two inner planets (b and c) were recently found to transit (Kane et al. 2020), prompting a photometric follow-up by the brand-new $CHaracterising\:ExOPlanets\:Satellite\:(CHEOPS)$. Here, we report that the outer planet d is also transiting, and measure its radius and mass to be $2.56\pm0.09$ $R_{\oplus}$ and $8.82\pm0.94$ $M_{\oplus}$, respectively. With its bright Sun-like star, long period, and mild irradiation ($\sim$5.7 times the irradiation of Earth), $\nu^2$ Lupi d unlocks a completely new region in the parameter space of exoplanets amenable to detailed characterization. We refine the properties of all three planets: planet b likely has a rocky mostly dry composition, while planets c and d seem to have retained small hydrogen-helium envelopes and a possibly large water fraction. We detect Lyman $\alpha$ absorption from the escaping atmosphere of HD 63433c, a $R=2.67 R_\oplus$, $P=20.5$ d mini Neptune orbiting a young (440 Myr) solar analogue in the Ursa Major Moving Group. Using HST/STIS, we measure a transit depth of $11.1 \pm 1.5$% in the blue wing and $8 \pm 3$% in the red. This signal is unlikely to be due to stellar variability, but should be confirmed by an upcoming second visit with HST. We do not detect Lyman $\alpha$ absorption from the inner planet, a smaller $R=2.15 R_\oplus$ mini Neptune on a 7.1 d orbit. We use Keck/NIRSPEC to place an upper limit of 0.5% on helium absorption for both planets. We measure the host star's X-ray spectrum and FUV flux with XMM-Newton, and model the outflow from both planets using a 3D hydrodynamic code. This model provides a reasonable match to the light curve in the blue wing of the Lyman $\alpha$ line and the helium non-detection for planet c, although it does not explain the tentative red wing absorption or reproduce the excess absorption spectrum in detail. Its predictions of strong Lyman $\alpha$ and helium absorption from b are ruled out by the observations. This model predicts a much shorter mass loss timescale for planet b, suggesting that b and c are fundamentally different: while the latter still retains its hydrogen/helium envelope, the former has likely lost its primordial atmosphere., Comment: accepted by AJ

Context: The energy-limited (EL) atmospheric escape approach is used to estimate mass-loss rates for a broad range of planets that host hydrogen-dominated atmospheres as well as for performing atmospheric evolution calculations. Aims: We aim to study the applicability range of the EL approximation. Methods: We revise the EL formalism and its assumptions. We also compare its results with those of hydrodynamic simulations, employing a grid covering planets with masses, radii, and equilibrium temperatures ranging between 1 $M_{\oplus}$ and 39 $M_{\oplus}$, 1 $R_{\oplus}$ and 10 $R_{\oplus}$, and 300 and 2000 K, respectively. Results: Within the grid boundaries, we find that the EL approximation gives a correct order of magnitude estimate for mass-loss rates for about 76% of the planets, but there can be departures from hydrodynamic simulations by up to three orders of magnitude in individual cases. Furthermore, we find that planets for which the mass-loss rates are correctly estimated by the EL approximation to within one order of magnitude have intermediate gravitational potentials as well as low-to-intermediate equilibrium temperatures and irradiation fluxes of extreme ultraviolet and X-ray radiation. However, for planets with low or high gravitational potentials, or high equilibrium temperatures and irradiation fluxes, the approximation fails in most cases. Conclusions: The EL approximation should not be used for planetary evolution calculations that require computing mass-loss rates for planets that cover a broad parameter space. In this case, it is very likely that the EL approximation would at times return mass-loss rates of up to several orders of magnitude above or below those predicted by hydrodynamic simulations. Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. In this research note, we outline the extension of the grid of upper atmosphere models first presented in Kubyshkina et al. (2018a). The original grid is based on a 1D hydrodynamic model and consists of about 7000 models covering planets of the size from Earth to twice Neptune at orbits corresponding to equilibrium temperatures between 300 and 2000 K around solar-like (0.4 to 1.3 solar mass) stars. The extended and revised grid of models consists of 10235 points and covers a planetary mass range of up to 109 Earth masses, which allows one to outline the transition between low- and high-gravity hot planets in short orbital separations. We prepared the interpolation tool allowing one to use the grid to define the mass-loss of a planet that falls into the parameter range of the grid. The atmospheres of gaseous giant exoplanets orbiting close to their parent stars (hot Jupiters) have been probed for nearly two decades. They allow us to investigate the chemical and physical properties of planetary atmospheres under extreme irradiation conditions. Previous observations of hot Jupiters as they transit in front of their host stars have revealed the frequent presence of water vapour and carbon monoxide in their atmospheres; this has been studied in terms of scaled solar composition under the usual assumption of chemical equilibrium. Both molecules as well as hydrogen cyanide were found in the atmosphere of HD 209458b, a well studied hot Jupiter (with equilibrium temperature around 1,500 kelvin), whereas ammonia was tentatively detected there and subsequently refuted. Here we report observations of HD 209458b that indicate the presence of water (H2O), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and acetylene (C2H2), with statistical significance of 5.3 to 9.9 standard deviations per molecule. Atmospheric models in radiative and chemical equilibrium that account for the detected species indicate a carbon-rich chemistry with a carbon-to-oxygen ratio close to or greater than 1, higher than the solar value (0.55). According to existing models relating the atmospheric chemistry to planet formation and migration scenarios, this would suggest that HD 209458b formed far from its present location and subsequently migrated inwards. GJ9827 is a bright star hosting a planetary system with three transiting planets. As a multi-planet system with planets that sprawl within the boundaries of the radius gap between terrestrial and gaseous planets, GJ9827 is an optimal target to study the evolution of the atmospheres of close-in planets with a common evolutionary history and their dependence from stellar irradiation. Here, we report on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and CARMENES transit observations of GJ9827 planets b and d. We performed a stellar and interstellar medium characterization from the ultraviolet HST spectra, obtaining fluxes for Ly-alpha and MgII of F(Ly-alpha) = (5.42+0.96-0.75) X 10^{-13} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} and F(MgII) = (5.64 +- 0.24) X 10^{-14} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. We also investigated a possible absorption signature in Ly-alpha in the atmosphere of GJ9827b during a transit event from HST spectra, as well as H-alpha and HeI signature for the atmosphere of GJ9827b and d from CARMENES spectra. We found no evidence of an extended atmosphere in either of the planets. This result is also supported by our analytical estimations of mass-loss based on the measured radiation fields for all the three planets of this system, which led to a mass-loss rate of 0.4, 0.3, and 0.1 planetary masses per Gyr, for GJ9827b, c, and d respectively. These values indicate that the planets could have lost their volatiles quickly in their evolution and probably do not retain an atmosphere at the current stage.

Nitrogen is a biosignature gas that cannot be maintained in its Earth-like ratio with CO$_2$ under abiotic conditions. It has also proven to be notoriously hard to detect at optical and infrared wavelengths. Fortunately, the ultraviolet region, which has only recently started being explored for terrestrial exoplanets, may provide new opportunities to characterise exoplanetary atmospheric nitrogen. In this work, the future prospects for detecting atomic nitrogen absorption lines in the transmission spectrum of an Earth-like planet orbiting in the habitable zone of a Sun-like star with LUVOIR are explored. Using the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium spectral synthesis code Cloudy, we produce a far-ultraviolet atomic transmission spectrum for an Earth-Sun-like system, and identify several nitrogen features, including both N I and N II lines. We calculate the number of transits required for 1$\sigma$ and 3$\sigma$ detections of the planetary N{\sc i} $\lambda1200$ triplet signal with the G120M grating of the LUMOS spectrograph designed for LUVOIR, as a function of distance to the system and stellar ultraviolet emission. The minimum number of transit observations necessary for 1$\sigma$ and 3$\sigma$ detections of atomic N are 188 and 1685, respectively, for a system located at a distance of one pc with 100 times the Solar ultraviolet flux. Given that the orbital period of an Earth-Sun system is one year, it is not feasible to detect atomic N in the transmission spectrum for these systems. The CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) was selected in 2012, as the first small mission in the ESA Science Programme and successfully launched in December 2019. CHEOPS is a partnership between ESA and Switzerland with important contributions by ten additional ESA Member States. CHEOPS is the first mission dedicated to search for transits of exoplanets using ultrahigh precision photometry on bright stars already known to host planets. As a follow-up mission, CHEOPS is mainly dedicated to improving, whenever possible, existing radii measurements or provide first accurate measurements for a subset of those planets for which the mass has already been estimated from ground-based spectroscopic surveys and to following phase curves. CHEOPS will provide prime targets for future spectroscopic atmospheric characterisation. Requirements on the photometric precision and stability have been derived for stars with magnitudes ranging from 6 to 12 in the V band. In particular, CHEOPS shall be able to detect Earth-size planets transiting G5 dwarf stars in the magnitude range between 6 and 9 by achieving a photometric precision of 20 ppm in 6 hours of integration. For K stars in the magnitude range between 9 and 12, CHEOPS shall be able to detect transiting Neptune-size planets achieving a photometric precision of 85 ppm in 3 hours of integration. This is achieved by using a single, frame-transfer, back-illuminated CCD detector at the focal plane assembly of a 33.5 cm diameter telescope. The 280 kg spacecraft has a pointing accuracy of about 1 arcsec rms and orbits on a sun-synchronous dusk-dawn orbit at 700 km altitude. The nominal mission lifetime is 3.5 years. The long-term evolution of hydrogen-dominated atmospheres of sub-Neptune-like planets is mostly controlled by two factors: a slow dissipation of the gravitational energy acquired at the formation (known as thermal evolution) and atmospheric mass loss. Here, we use MESA to self-consistently couple the thermal evolution model of lower atmospheres with a realistic hydrodynamical atmospheric evaporation prescription. To outline the main features of such coupling, we simulate planets with a range of core masses (5-20 Mearth) and initial atmospheric mass fractions (0.5-30%), orbiting a solar-like star at 0.1 au. In addition to our computed evolutionary tracks, we also study the stability of planetary atmospheres, showing that the atmospheres of light planets can be completely removed within 1 Gyr, and that compact atmospheres have a better survival rate. From a detailed comparison between our results and the output of the previous-generation models, we show that coupling between thermal evolution and atmospheric evaporation considerably affects the thermal state of atmospheres for low-mass planets and, consequently, changes the relationship between atmospheric mass fraction and planetary parameters. We, therefore, conclude that self-consistent consideration of the thermal evolution and atmospheric evaporation is of crucial importance for evolutionary modeling and a better characterization of planetary atmospheres. From our simulations, we derive an analytical expression between the planetary radius and atmospheric mass fraction at different ages. Context - Exoplanetary upper atmospheres are low density environments where radiative processes can compete with collisional ones and introduce non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects into transmission spectra. Methods - We adapt the NLTE spectral synthesis code Cloudy to produce an atmospheric structure and atomic transmission spectrum in both NLTE and local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) for the hot Jupiter HD209458b, given a published T-P profile and assuming solar metallicity. Selected spectral features, including H$\alpha$, Na I D, He I $\lambda$10830, Fe I & II ultra-violet (UV) bands, and C, O and Si UV lines, are compared with literature observations and models where available. The strength of NLTE effects are measured for individual spectral lines to identify which features are most strongly affected. Results - The developed modelling framework computing NLTE synthetic spectra reproduces literature results for the He I $\lambda$10830 triplet, the Na I D lines, and the forest of Fe I lines in the optical. We report the discovery of a warm Neptune and a hot sub-Neptune transiting TOI-421 (BD-14 1137, TIC 94986319), a bright (V=9.9) G9 dwarf star in a visual binary system observed by the TESS space mission in Sectors 5 and 6. We performed ground-based follow-up observations -- comprised of LCOGT transit photometry, NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging, and FIES, CORALIE, HARPS, HIRES, and PFS high-precision Doppler measurements -- and confirmed the planetary nature of the 16-day transiting candidate announced by the TESS team. We discovered an additional radial velocity signal with a period of 5 days induced by the presence of a second planet in the system, which we also found to transit its host star. We found that the inner mini-Neptune, TOI-421b, has an orbital period of Pb =5.19672 +- 0.00049 days, a mass of Mb = 7.17 +- 0.66 Mearth and a radius of Rb = 2.68+0.19-0.18 Rearth, whereas the outer warm Neptune, TOI-421 c, has a period of Pc =16.06819 +- 0.00035 days, a mass of Mc = 16.42+1.06-1.04 Mearth, a radius of Rc = 5.09+0.16-0.15 Rearth and a density of rho_c =0.685+0.080-0.072 g cm-3 . With its characteristics the inner planet (rho_b=2.05+0.52-0.41 g cm-3) is placed in the intriguing class of the super-puffy mini-Neptunes. TOI-421b and TOI-421c are found to be well suitable for atmospheric characterization. Our atmospheric simulations predict significant Ly-alpha transit absorption, due to strong hydrogen escape in both planets, and the presence of detectable CH_4 in the atmosphere of TOI-421c if equilibrium chemistry is assumed.

High-resolution Doppler-resolved spectroscopy has opened up a new window into the atmospheres of both transiting and non-transiting exoplanets. Here, we present VLT/UVES observations of a transit of WASP-121b, an 'ultra-hot' Jupiter previously found to exhibit a temperature inversion and detections of multiple species at optical wavelengths. We present initial results using the blue arm of UVES ($\approx$3700-5000A), recovering a clear signal of neutral Fe in the planet's atmosphere at >8$\sigma$, which could contribute to (or even fully explain) the temperature inversion in the stratosphere. However, using standard cross-correlation methods, it is difficult to extract physical parameters such as temperature and abundances. Recent pioneering efforts have sought to develop likelihood `mappings' that can be used to directly fit models to high-resolution datasets. We introduce a new framework that directly computes the likelihood of the model fit to the data, and can be used to explore the posterior distribution of parameterised model atmospheres via MCMC techniques. Our method also recovers the physical extent of the atmosphere, as well as account for time- and wavelength-dependent uncertainties. We measure a temperature of $3710^{+490}_{-510}$K, indicating a higher temperature in the upper atmosphere when compared to low-resolution observations. We also show that the Fe I signal is physically separated from the exospheric Fe II. However, the temperature measurements are highly degenerate with aerosol properties; detection of additional species, using more sophisticated atmospheric models, or combining these methods with low-resolution spectra should help break these degeneracies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 7 figures

The inflated transiting hot Jupiter HD 209458b is one of the best studied objects since the beginning of exoplanet characterization. Transmission observations of this system between the mid infrared and the far ultraviolet have revealed the signature of atomic, molecular, and possibly aerosol species in the lower atmosphere of the planet, as well as escaping hydrogen and metals in the upper atmosphere. From a re-analysis of near-ultraviolet (NUV) transmission observations of HD 209458b, we detect ionized iron (Fe II) absorption in a 100 A-wide range around 2370 A, lying beyond the planetary Roche lobe. However, we do not detect absorption of equally strong Fe II lines expected to be around 2600 A. Further, we find no evidence for absorption by neutral magnesium (Mg I), ionized magnesium (Mg II), nor neutral iron (Fe I). These results avoid the conflict with theoretical models previously found by Vidal-Madjar et al. (2013), which detected Mg I but did not detect Mg II from this same data set. Our results indicate that hydrodynamic escape is strong enough to carry atoms as heavy as iron beyond the planetary Roche lobe, even for planets less irradiated than the extreme ultra-hot-Jupiters such as WASP-12b and KELT-9b. The detection of iron and non-detection of magnesium in the upper atmosphere of HD 209458b can be explained by a model in which the lower atmosphere forms (hence, sequesters) primarily magnesium-bearing condensates, rather than iron condensates. This is suggested by current microphysical models. Earth mass exoplanets are difficult to detect. The Dispersed Matter Planet Project (DMPP) identifies stars which are likely to host the most detectable low mass exoplanets. The star DMPP-3 (HD 42936) shows signs of circumstellar absorption, indicative of mass loss from ablating planets. Here we report the radial velocity (RV) discovery of a highly eccentric 507 d binary companion and a hot super-Earth planet in a 6.67 d orbit around the primary star. DMPP-3A is a solar type star while DMPP-3B is just massive enough to fuse hydrogen. The binary, with semi-major axis 1.22 $\pm$ 0.02 AU, is considerably tighter than others known to host planets orbiting only one of the component stars. The configuration of the DMPP-3 planetary system is rare and indicates dynamical interactions, though the evolutionary history is not entirely clear. Some highly irradiated close-in exoplanets orbit stars showing anomalously low stellar chromospheric emission. We attribute this to absorption by circumstellar gas replenished by mass loss from ablating planets. Here we report statistics validating this hypothesis. Among ~3000 nearby, bright, main sequence stars ~40 show depressed chromospheric emission indicative of undiscovered mass-losing planets. The Dispersed Matter Planet Project uses high precision, high cadence radial velocity measurements to detect these planets. We summarise results for two planetary systems (DMPP-1 and DMPP-3) and fully present observations revealing a Mp sin i = 0.469 M$_{\rm J}$ planet in a 5.207 d orbit around the $\gamma$-Doradus pulsator HD 11231 (DMPP-2). We have detected short period planets wherever we have made more than 60 RV measurements, demonstrating that we have originated a very efficient method for detecting nearby compact planetary systems. Our shrouded, ablating planetary systems may be a short-lived phase related to the Neptunian desert: i.e. the dearth of intermediate-mass planets at short orbital periods. The circumstellar gas facilitates compositional analysis; allowing empirical exogeology in the cases of sublimating rocky planets. Constraining the composition of super-Earth-to-sub-Neptune-size planets is a priority to understand the processes of planetary formation and evolution. pi Men c represents a unique target for the atmospheric and compositional characterization of such planets because it is strongly irradiated and its bulk density is consistent with abundant H2O. We searched for hydrogen from photodissociating H2/H2O in pi Men c's upper atmosphere through H i Ly-alpha transmission spectroscopy with the Hubble Space Telescope's STIS instrument, but did not detect it. We set 1 (3) upper limits for the effective planet-to-star size ratio RLy-alpha/Rearth=0.13 (0.24) and 0.12 (0.20) at velocities [-215,-91] km/s and [+57,+180] km/s, respectively. We reconstructed the stellar spectrum, and estimate that Men c receives about 1350 erg cm-2 s-1 of 5-912-Angstroms-energy, enough to cause rapid atmospheric escape. An interesting scenario to explain the non-detection is that Men c's atmosphere is dominated by H2O or other heavy molecules rather than H2/He. According to our models, abundant oxygen results in less extended atmospheres, which transition from neutral to ionized hydrogen closer to the planet. We compare our non-detection to other detection attempts, and tentatively identify two behaviors: planets with densities <2 g cm-3 (and likely hydrogen-dominated atmospheres) result in H i Ly-alpha absorption, whereas planets with densities >3 g cm-3 (and plausibly non-hydrogen-dominated atmospheres) do not result in measurable absorption. With a day-side temperature in excess of 4500K, comparable to a mid-K-type star, KELT-9b is the hottest planet known. Its extreme temperature makes KELT-9b a particularly interesting test bed for investigating the nature and diversity of gas giant planets. We observed the transit of KELT-9b at high spectral resolution (R$\sim$94,600) with the CARMENES instrument on the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope. Using these data, we detect for the first time ionized calcium (CaII triplet) absorption in the atmosphere of KELT-9b; this is the second time that CaII has been observed in a hot Jupiter. Our observations also reveal prominent H$\alpha$ absorption, confirming the presence of an extended hydrogen envelope around KELT-9b. We compare our detections with an atmospheric model and find that all four lines form between atmospheric temperatures of 6100 K and 8000 K and that the CaII lines form at pressures between 10 and 50 nbar while the H$\alpha$ line forms at a lower pressure ($\sim$6 nbar), higher up in the atmosphere. The altitude that the core of H$\alpha$ line forms is found to be $\sim$1.4 R$_{p}$, well within the planetary Roche lobe ($\sim$1.9 R$_{p}$). Current burning issues in stellar physics, for both hot and cool stars, concern their magnetism. In hot stars, stable magnetic fields of fossil origin impact their stellar structure and circumstellar environment, with a likely major role in stellar evolution. However, this role is complex and thus poorly understood as of today. It needs to be quantified with high-resolution UV spectropolarimetric measurements. In cool stars, UV spectropolarimetry would provide access to the structure and magnetic field of the very dynamic upper stellar atmosphere, providing key data for new progress to be made on the role of magnetic fields in heating the upper atmospheres, launching stellar winds, and more generally in the interaction of cool stars with their environment (circumstellar disk, planets) along their whole evolution. We suggest to use the Hubble Space Telescople (HST) follow-up observations of the TESS targets for detecting possible plasma tori along the orbits of exoplanets orbiting M dwarfs. The source of the torus could be planetary volcanic activity due to tidal or electromagnetic induction heating. Fast losses to space for planets orbiting these active stars can lead to the lost material forming a torus along the planetary orbit, similar to the Io plasma torus. Planet atmospheric escape induced by high-energy stellar irradiation is a key phenomenon shaping the structure and evolution of planetary atmospheres. Therefore, the present-day properties of a planetary atmosphere are intimately connected with the amount of stellar flux received by a planet during its lifetime, thus with the evolutionary path of its host star. Using a recently developed analytic approximation based on hydrodynamic simulations for atmospheric escape rates, we track within a Bayesian framework the evolution of a planet as a function of stellar flux evolution history, constrained by the measured planetary radius, with the other system parameters as priors. We find that the ideal objects for this type of study are close-in sub-Neptune-like planets, as they are highly affected by atmospheric escape, and yet retain a significant fraction of their primordial hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Furthermore, we apply this analysis to the HD3167 and K2-32 planetary systems. For HD3167, we find that the most probable irradiation level at 150 Myr was between 40 and 130 times solar, corresponding to a rotation period of 1.78^{+2.69}_{-1.23} days. For K2-32, we find a surprisingly low irradiation level ranging between half and four times solar at 150 Myr. Finally, we show that for multi-planet systems, our framework enables one to constrain poorly known properties of individual planets., Comment: 23 pages, 20 figures, 2 tables

The exoplanet WASP-12b is the prototype for the emerging class of ultra-hot, Jupiter-mass exoplanets. Past models have predicted---and near ultra-violet observations have shown---that this planet is losing mass. We present an analysis of two sets of 3.6 $\mu$m and 4.5 $\mu$m $\textit{Spitzer}$ phase curve observations of the system which show clear evidence of infrared radiation from gas stripped from the planet, and the gas appears to be flowing directly toward or away from the host star. This accretion signature is only seen at 4.5 $\mu$m, not at 3.6 $\mu$m, which is indicative either of CO emission at the longer wavelength or blackbody emission from cool, $\lesssim$ 600 K gas. It is unclear why WASP-12b is the only ultra-hot Jupiter to exhibit this mass loss signature, but perhaps WASP-12b's orbit is decaying as some have claimed, while the orbits of other exoplanets may be more stable; alternatively, the high energy irradiation from WASP-12A may be stronger than the other host stars. The role of radiation pressure in shaping exoplanet photoevaporation remains a topic of contention. Radiation pressure from the exoplanet's host star has been proposed as a mechanism to drive the escaping atmosphere into a "cometary" tail and explain the high velocities observed in systems where mass loss is occurring. In this paper we present results from high-resolution 3-D hydrodynamic simulations of a planet similar to HD 209458b. We self-consistently launch a wind flowing outward from the planet by calculating the ionization and heating resulting from incident high-energy radiation, and account for radiation pressure. We first present a simplified calculation, setting a limit on the Lyman-$\alpha$ flux required to drive the photo-evaporated planetary material to larger radii and line-of-sight velocities. We then present the results of our simulations, which confirm the limits determined by our analytic calculation. We thus demonstrate that, within the limits of our hydrodynamic simulation and for the Lyman-$\alpha$ fluxes expected for HD 209458, radiation pressure is unlikely to significantly affect photoevaporative winds or to explain the high velocities at which wind material is observed, though further possibilities remain to be investigated.

Since the Archean, N2 has been a major atmospheric constituent in Earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen is an essential element in the building blocks of life, therefore the geobiological nitrogen cycle is a fundamental factor in the long term evolution of both Earth and Earth-like exoplanets. We discuss the development of the Earth's N2 atmosphere since the planet's formation and its relation with the geobiological cycle. Then we suggest atmospheric evolution scenarios and their possible interaction with life forms: firstly, for a stagnant-lid anoxic world, secondly for a tectonically active anoxic world, and thirdly for an oxidized tectonically active world. Furthermore, we discuss a possible demise of present Earth's biosphere and its effects on the atmosphere. Since life forms are the most efficient means for recycling deposited nitrogen back into the atmosphere nowadays, they sustain its surface partial pressure at high levels. Also, the simultaneous presence of significant N2 and O2 is chemically incompatible in an atmosphere over geological timescales. Thus, we argue that an N2-dominated atmosphere in combination with O2 on Earth-like planets within circumstellar habitable zones can be considered as a geo-biosignature. Terrestrial planets with such atmospheres will have an operating tectonic regime connected with an aerobe biosphere, whereas other scenarios in most cases end up with a CO2-dominated atmosphere. We conclude with implications for the search for life on Earth-like exoplanets inside the habitable zones of M to K-stars.

Much of the focus of exoplanet atmosphere analysis in the coming decade will be at infrared wavelengths, with the planned launches of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). However, without being placed in the context of broader wavelength coverage, especially in the optical and ultraviolet, infrared observations produce an incomplete picture of exoplanet atmospheres. Scattering information encoded in blue optical and near-UV (NUV) observations can help determine whether muted spectral features observed in the infrared are due to a hazy/cloudy atmosphere, or a clear atmosphere with a higher mean molecular weight. Farther into the UV, observations can identify atmospheric escape and mass loss from exoplanet atmospheres, providing a greater understanding of the atmospheric evolution of exoplanets, along with composition information from above the cloud deck.
