Abstract

Three sets of chiral doublet band structures have been identified in the 103Rh nucleus. The properties of the observed chiral doublet bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. Two of them belong to an identical configuration, and provide the first experimental evidence for a novel type of multiple chiral doublets, where an "excited" chiral doublet of a configuration is seen together with the "yrast" one. This observation shows that the chiral geometry in nuclei can be robust against the increase of the intrinsic excitation energy.

Abstract

High-spin states in 135Nd were populated with the 110Pd(30Si,5n)135Nd reaction at a 30Si bombarding energy of 133 MeV. Two Delta(I)=1 bands with close excitation energies and the same parity were observed. These bands are directly linked by Delta(I)=1 and Delta(I)=2 transitions. The chiral nature of these two bands is confirmed by comparison with three-dimensional tilted axis cranking calculations. High spin states of the nucleus 104Cd have been studied using the Gammapshere array. The level scheme for 104Cd has been revised and evidence for a structure consisting of magnetic dipole transitions is presented. Abstract

Excited states have been populated in In-108 and In-110 in complementary backed- and thin-target experiments, using the Stony Brook and the 8 pi Ge-detector arrays. The level schemes for both isotopes have been extended and modified, including the first observation of DeltaI = 2 bands in In-110. Lifetimes of states in four DeltaI = 1 bands and one DeltaI = 2 band have been measured using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. Experimental total angular momenta and reduced transition strengths for the DeltaI = 1 bands have been compared with tilted axis cranking predictions for shears bands with configurations involving one proton g(9/2) hole and one or three valence quasineutrons from the h(11/2) and g(7/2)/d(5/2) orbitals. The DeltaI = 2 bands have been compared with principal axis cranking predictions for configurations with two g(9/2) proton holes and a g(7/2) or d(5/2) proton and one- or three-quasineutron configurations involving the h(11/2) and g(7/2)/d(5/2) orbitals. In general, there is good overall agreement for both the angular momenta and reduced transition strengths. The DeltaI = 1 and DeltaI = 2 bands have large J((2))/B (E2) ratios as expected for the shears mechanism. The B (M1) strengths deduced for the DeltaI = 1 bands show a decreasing trend as a function of spin, which is also a feature of the shears mechanism. Configuration assignments have been made for most observed bands based on comparisons with theory and systematics of neighboring nuclei.

Abstract

New sideband partners of the yrast bands built on the i ph11/2nh11/2 configuration were identified in 55Cs, 57La, and 61Pm N = 75 isotones of 134Pr. These bands form with 134Pr unique doublet-band systematics suggesting a common basis. Aplanar solutions of 3D tilted axis cranking calculations for triaxial shapes define left- and right-handed chiral systems out of the three angular momenta provided by the valence particles and the core rotation, which leads to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the doublet bands. Abstract

High spin states have been populated in 117 53I via the 90Zr(31P,2p2n) reaction at 150 MeV, using the EUROGAM II γ-ray spectrometer to record high-fold γ-ray coincidences. A quadruples γ-ray analysis (γ4) has been used to extend the known level scheme. In addition to several aligned noncollective states, a new high-spin band showing characteristics of smooth termination has been established at and linked into the low-spin level scheme. Its structure has been inferred through comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

40. Identification of Excited States in Doubly Odd 110Sb: Smooth Band Termination

Abstract

Excited states in 110Sb have been identified for the first time in a series of gamma-spectroscopy experiments using both thin and backed targets, including neutron-fold and recoil-mass measurements to provide unambiguous channel identification. The three decoupled intruder bands observed in 110Sb are based upon configurations involving 2p-2h excitations across the Z=50 shell gap and show the features of smooth band termination. The yrast intruder band, which has been connected to the low-spin levels, is tentatively identified up to its predicted termination at IPi=45+. Excellent agreement with configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations is obtained for the high-spin states near termination.

Abstract

Excited states have been observed for the first time in the very neutron-deficient, odd-odd nucleus, Cs-116(55)61. The assignment to Cs-116 has been made by the detection of gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated charged particles and with evaporation residues. The observed states form a rotational band which has been assigned to the nu(h(11/2)) circle times pi(h(11/2)) configuration. Tentative spin assignments have been made on the basis of systematic comparisons with neighboring cesium isotopes. A low-spin signature inversion is observed in the band at a rotational frequency of about 0.23 MeV/h. The observed signature inversions in the odd-odd Cs116-126 isotopes have been compared with the results of extended total Routhian surface calculations, in which signature inversion arises as a consequence of quadrupole-pairing correlations and triaxial deformation. Abstract

Six rotational bands up to energies Ex=24.7 MeV and spins Jpi=(79/2-) have been identified in 109Sn using the GAMMASPHERE gamma-detector array. Four of the bands show smoothly decreasing dynamic moments of inertia at rotational frequencies hv > 0.6 MeV. The bands arise at medium spins from coupling of a valence d5/2, g7/2 or h11/2 neutron to the deformed 2p2h proton excitation of the Z=50 core 108Sn. At very high hv these bands show the typical behaviour of smoothly terminating bands, i.e. a gradual alignment of the angular momenta of the valence particles and holes corresponding to a transition from high collectivity to noncollective states.

Abstract

Excited states have been identified in the very neutron-deficient 122Ce nucleus. This is the first observation of this nucleus and its excited states. The ground-state rotational band has been observed up to spin 14 ℏ. The band has been assigned to 122Ce by detecting gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated charged particles and neutrons. The E(2 1+) value suggests a rather large ground-state deformation of β2 = 0.35, in good agreement with Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) mean-field calculations. The aligned angular momentum of the band has been studied and is compared with those of the neighboring even-even cerium isotopes, and to Woods-Saxon cranking calculations. The non-observation of the π(h11/2)2 alignment until at least 0.4 MeV/ℏ is consistent with the extracted value of β2. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Excited states in In-113 were populated via the reactions Mo-100(O-18,p4n)In-113 and Pd-110(Li-7,4n)In-113. The two known Delta J=2 intruder bands, based on the pi g(7/2)circle times d(5/2) and pi h(11/2) orbitals, have been extended by 8h to spins (49/2(+))h and (55/2(-))h, respectively. The previous finding of three sequences of Delta J=1 gamma-ray transitions has been confirmed. A self-consistent cranked shell-model calculation gives a good description of the contrasting alignment patterns of the two Delta J=2 intruder bands.
