Search

Laser cooling methods for trapped ions are most commonly studied at low energies, i.e., in the Lamb-Dicke regime. However, ions in experiments are often excited to higher energies for which the Lamb-Dicke approximation breaks down. Here we construct a non-perturbative, semiclassical method for predicting the energy-dependent cooling dynamics of trapped-ion crystals with potentially many internal levels and motional modes beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. This method allows accurate and efficient modeling of a variety of interesting phenomena, such as the breakdown of EIT cooling at high energies and the simultaneous cooling of multiple high-temperature modes. We compare its predictions both to fully-quantum simulations and to experimental data for a broadband EIT cooling method on a Raman $S$-$D$ transition in $^{138}$Ba${^+}$. We find the method can accurately predict cooling rates over a wide range of energies relevant to trapped ion experiments. How are LLM-based agents used in the future? While many of the existing work on agents has focused on improving the performance of a specific family of objective and challenging tasks, in this work, we take a different perspective by thinking about full delegation: agents take over humans' routine decision-making processes and are trusted by humans to find solutions that fit people's personalized needs and are adaptive to ever-changing context. In order to achieve such a goal, the behavior of the agents, i.e., agentic behaviors, should be evaluated not only on their achievements (i.e., outcome evaluation), but also how they achieved that (i.e., procedure evaluation). For this, we propose APEC Agent Constitution, a list of criteria that an agent should follow for good agentic behaviors, including Accuracy, Proactivity, Efficiency and Credibility. To verify whether APEC aligns with human preferences, we develop APEC-Travel, a travel planning agent that proactively extracts hidden personalized needs via multi-round dialog with travelers. APEC-Travel is constructed purely from synthetic data generated by Llama3.1-405B-Instruct with a diverse set of travelers' persona to simulate rich distribution of dialogs. Iteratively fine-tuned to follow APEC Agent Constitution, APEC-Travel surpasses baselines by 20.7% on rule-based metrics and 9.1% on LLM-as-a-Judge scores across the constitution axes.

Travel planning is a challenging and time-consuming task that aims to find an itinerary which satisfies multiple, interdependent constraints regarding flights, accommodations, attractions, and other travel arrangements. In this paper, we propose To the Globe (TTG), a real-time demo system that takes natural language requests from users, translates it to symbolic form via a fine-tuned Large Language Model, and produces optimal travel itineraries with Mixed Integer Linear Programming solvers. The overall system takes ~5 seconds to reply to the user request with guaranteed itineraries. To train TTG, we develop a synthetic data pipeline that generates user requests, flight and hotel information in symbolic form without human annotations, based on the statistics of real-world datasets, and fine-tune an LLM to translate NL user requests to their symbolic form, which is sent to the symbolic solver to compute optimal itineraries. Our NL-symbolic translation achieves ~91% exact match in a backtranslation metric (i.e., whether the estimated symbolic form of generated natural language matches the groundtruth), and its returned itineraries have a ratio of 0.979 compared to the optimal cost of the ground truth user request. When evaluated by users, TTG achieves consistently high Net Promoter Scores (NPS) of 35-40% on generated itinerary.

Understanding the impact of gate errors on quantum circuits is crucial to determining the potential applications of quantum computers, especially in the absence of large-scale error-corrected hardware. We put forward analytical arguments, corroborated by extensive numerical and experimental evidence, that Trotterized quantum circuits simulating the time-evolution of systems near thermal equilibrium are substantially more robust to both quantum gate errors and Trotter (discretization) errors than is widely assumed. In Quantinuum's trapped-ion computers, the weakly entangling gates that appear in Trotterized circuits can be implemented natively, and their error rate is smaller when they generate less entanglement; from benchmarking, we know that the error for a gate $\exp[-i (Z\otimes Z) \tau]$ decreases roughly linearly with $\tau$, up to a small offset at $\tau = 0$. We provide extensive evidence that this scaling, together with the robustness of near-thermal dynamics to both gate and discretization errors, facilitates substantial improvements in the achievable accuracy of Trotterized dynamics on near-term quantum computers. We make heavy use of a new theoretical tool -- a statistical ensemble of random product states that approximates a thermal state, which can be efficiently prepared with low noise on quantum computers. Trapped ions offer long coherence times and high fidelity, programmable quantum operations, making them a promising platform for quantum simulation of condensed matter systems, quantum dynamics, and problems related to high-energy physics. We review selected developments in trapped-ion qubits and architectures and discuss quantum simulation applications that utilize these emerging capabilities. This review emphasizes developments in digital (gate-based) quantum simulations that exploit trapped-ion hardware capabilities, such as flexible qubit connectivity, selective mid-circuit measurement, and classical feedback, to simulate models with long-range interactions, explore non-unitary dynamics, compress simulations of states with limited entanglement, and reduce the circuit depths required to prepare or simulate long-range entangled states., Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures, Review article for Annual Reviews of Condensed Matter Physics

Recent decades have provided a host of examples and applications motivating the study of nonlocal differential operators. We discuss a class of such operators acting on bounded domains, focusing on those with integrable kernels having compact support. Notably, we make no explicit symmetry assumptions on the kernel and discuss some implications of this decision. We establish a nonlocal-to-local convergence result, showing that these operators coincide with the classical derivative as the nonlocality vanishes. We also provide a new integration by parts result, a characterization of the compactness of these nonlocal operators, an implication for the nonlocal Poincar\'e inequality, and a variety of examples. This work establishes several key results needed to analyze nonlocal variational problems, given in Part II. We hope that this paper can serve as a relatively gentle introduction to the field of nonlocal modeling.

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

Empirical evidence for a gap between the computational powers of classical and quantum computers has been provided by experiments that sample the output distributions of two-dimensional quantum circuits. Many attempts to close this gap have utilized classical simulations based on tensor network techniques, and their limitations shed light on the improvements to quantum hardware required to frustrate classical simulability. In particular, quantum computers having in excess of $\sim 50$ qubits are primarily vulnerable to classical simulation due to restrictions on their gate fidelity and their connectivity, the latter determining how many gates are required (and therefore how much infidelity is suffered) in generating highly-entangled states. Here, we describe recent hardware upgrades to Quantinuum's H2 quantum computer enabling it to operate on up to $56$ qubits with arbitrary connectivity and $99.843(5)\%$ two-qubit gate fidelity. Utilizing the flexible connectivity of H2, we present data from random circuit sampling in highly connected geometries, doing so at unprecedented fidelities and a scale that appears to be beyond the capabilities of state-of-the-art classical algorithms. The NEXT-White detector, a high-pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber, demonstrated the excellence of this technology for future neutrinoless double beta decay searches using photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to measure energy and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to extract topology information. This analysis uses $^{83m}\text{Kr}$ data from the NEXT-White detector to measure and understand the energy resolution that can be obtained with the SiPMs, rather than with PMTs. The energy resolution obtained of (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) $\%$, full-width half-maximum, is slightly larger than predicted based on the photon statistics resulting from very low light detection coverage of the SiPM plane in the NEXT-White detector. The difference in the predicted and measured resolution is attributed to poor corrections, which are expected to be improved with larger statistics. Furthermore, the noise of the SiPMs is shown to not be a dominant factor in the energy resolution and may be negligible when noise subtraction is applied appropriately, for high-energy events or larger SiPM coverage detectors. These results, which are extrapolated to estimate the response of large coverage SiPM planes, are promising for the development of future, SiPM-only, readout planes that can offer imaging and achieve similar energy resolution to that previously demonstrated with PMTs.

The imaging of individual Ba$^{2+}$ ions in high pressure xenon gas is one possible way to attain background-free sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay and hence establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. In this paper we demonstrate selective single Ba$^{2+}$ ion imaging inside a high-pressure xenon gas environment. Ba$^{2+}$ ions chelated with molecular chemosensors are resolved at the gas-solid interface using a diffraction-limited imaging system with scan area of 1$\times$1~cm$^2$ located inside 10~bar of xenon gas. This new form of microscopy represents an important enabling step in the development of barium tagging for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in $^{136}$Xe, as well as a new tool for studying the photophysics of fluorescent molecules and chemosensors at the solid-gas interface.

In petroleum production systems, continuous multiphase flow rates are essential for efficient operation. They provide situational awareness, enable production optimization, improve reservoir management and planning, and form the basis for allocation. Furthermore, they can be crucial to ensure a fair revenue split between stakeholders for complex production systems where operators share the facilities. Yet, due to complex multiphase flow dynamics and uncertain subsurface fluid properties, the flow rates are challenging to obtain with high accuracy. Consequently, flow rate measurement and estimation solutions, such as multiphase flow meters and virtual flow meters, have different degrees of accuracy and suitability, and impact production decisions and production allocation accordingly. We propose a field-proven, data-driven framework for reconciliation and allocation. With data validation and reconciliation as the theoretical backbone, the solution exploits measurement redundancy to fuse together relevant flow rate information to infer the most likely flow rates in the production system based on quantifiable uncertainties. The framework consists of four modules: data-processing, uncertainty estimation, reconciliation, and gross error detection. The latter, being the focus of this paper, is a means to identify and mitigate the effect of measurements subject to systematic error, which can invalidate the reconciliation. In this paper, we highlight that a combination of statistical tests and supporting logic for gross error detection and elimination can be beneficial in obtaining a more justifiable production allocation. Using the maximum power measurement test, the module can be limited in its ability to pinpoint the erroneous measurement. For a stochastically monotone Markov chain taking values in a Polish space, we present a number of conditions for existence and for uniqueness of its stationary regime, as well as for closeness of its transient trajectories. Many-body quantum games provide a natural perspective on phases of matter in quantum hardware, crisply relating the quantum correlations inherent in phases of matter to the securing of quantum advantage at a device-oriented task. In this paper we introduce a family of multiplayer quantum games for which topologically ordered phases of matter are a resource yielding quantum advantage. Unlike previous examples, quantum advantage persists away from the exactly solvable point and is robust to arbitrary local perturbations, irrespective of system size. We demonstrate this robustness experimentally on Quantinuum's H1-1 quantum computer by playing the game with a continuous family of randomly deformed toric code states that can be created with constant-depth circuits leveraging mid-circuit measurements and unitary feedback. We are thus able to tune through a topological phase transition - witnessed by the loss of robust quantum advantage - on currently available quantum hardware. This behavior is contrasted with an analogous family of deformed GHZ states, for which arbitrarily weak local perturbations destroy quantum advantage in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, we discuss a topological interpretation of the game, which leads to a natural generalization involving an arbitrary number of players., Comment: 4.5 pages, 3 figures

We consider directed random graphs, the prototype of which being the Barak-Erd\H{o}s graph $\vec G(\mathbb Z, p)$, and study the way that long (or heavy, if weights are present) paths grow. This is done by relating the graphs to certain particle systems that we call Infinite Bin Models (IBM). A number of limit theorems are shown. The goal of this paper is to present results along with techniques that have been used in this area. In the case of $\vec G(\mathbb Z, p)$ the last passage percolation constant $C(p)$ is studied in great detail. It is shown that $C(p)$ is analytic for $p>0$, has an interesting asymptotic expansion at $p=1$ and that $C(p)/p$ converges to $e$ like $1/(\log p)^2$ as $p \to 0$. The paper includes the study of IBMs as models on their own as well as their connections to stochastic models of branching processes in continuous or discrete time with selection. Several proofs herein are new or simplified versions of published ones. Regenerative techniques are used where possible, exhibiting random sets of vertices over which the graphs regenerate. When edges have random weights we show how the last passage percolation constants behave and when central limit theorems exist. When the underlying vertex set is partially ordered, new phenomena occur, e.g., there are relations with last passage Brownian percolation. We also look at weights that may possibly take negative values and study in detail some special cases that require combinatorial/graph theoretic techniques that exhibit some interesting non-differentiability properties of the last passage percolation constant. In this work we further develop a nonlocal calculus theory (initially introduced in [5]) associated with singular fractional-type operators which exhibit kernels with finite support of interactions. The applicability of the framework to nonlocal elasticity and the theory of peridynamics has attracted increased interest and motivation to study it and find connections with its classical counterpart. In particular, a critical contribution of this paper is producing vector identities, integration by part type theorems (such as the Divergence Theorem, Green identities), as well as a Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition. The estimates, together with the analysis performed along the way provide stepping stones for proving additional results in the framework, as well as pathways for numerical implementations.

NEXT-100 is currently being constructed at the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc in the Spanish Pyrenees and will search for neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) with 100 kg of xenon. Charge amplification is carried out via electroluminescence (EL) which is the process of accelerating electrons in a high electric field region causing secondary scintillation of the medium proportional to the initial charge. The NEXT-100 EL and cathode regions are made from tensioned hexagonal meshes of 1 m diameter. This paper describes the design, characterization, and installation of these parts for NEXT-100. Simulations of the electric field are performed to model the drift and amplification of ionization electrons produced in the detector under various EL region alignments and rotations. Measurements of the electrostatic breakdown voltage in air characterize performance under high voltage conditions and identify breakdown points. The electrostatic deflection of the mesh is quantified and fit to a first-principles mechanical model. Measurements were performed with both a standalone test EL region and with the NEXT-100 EL region before its installation in the detector. Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from $^{83\mathrm{m}}$Kr calibration electron captures ($E\sim45$keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to $2~$cm precision with bias $< 1$mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E$\geq$1.5MeV), yielding a precision of 3cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q$_{\beta\beta}$ in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

We discuss a laser-free, two-qubit geometric phase gate technique for generating high-fidelity entanglement between two trapped ions. The scheme works by ramping the spin-dependent force on and off slowly relative to the gate detunings, which adiabatically eliminates the spin-motion entanglement (AESE). We show how gates performed with AESE can eliminate spin-motion entanglement with multiple modes simultaneously, without having to specifically tune the control field detunings. This is because the spin-motion entanglement is suppressed by operating the control fields in a certain parametric limit, rather than by engineering an optimized control sequence. We also discuss physical implementations that use either electronic or ferromagnetic magnetic field gradients. In the latter, we show how to ``AESE" the system by smoothly turning on the \textit{effective} spin-dependent force by shelving from a magnetic field insensitive state to a magnetic field sensitive state slowly relative to the gate mode frequencies. We show how to do this with a Rabi or adiabatic rapid passage transition. Finally, we show how gating with AESE significantly decreases the gate's sensitivity to common sources of motional decoherence, making it easier to perform high-fidelity gates at Doppler temperatures.

The NEXT experiment aims at the sensitive search of the neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe, using high-pressure gas electroluminescent time projection chambers. The NEXT-White detector is the first radiopure demonstrator of this technology, operated in the Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc. Achieving an energy resolution of 1% FWHM at 2.6 MeV and further background rejection by means of the topology of the reconstructed tracks, NEXT-White has been exploited beyond its original goals in order to perform a neutrinoless double beta decay search. The analysis considers the combination of 271.6 days of $^{136}$Xe-enriched data and 208.9 days of $^{136}$Xe-depleted data. A detailed background modeling and measurement has been developed, ensuring the time stability of the radiogenic and cosmogenic contributions across both data samples. Limits to the neutrinoless mode are obtained in two alternative analyses: a background-model-dependent approach and a novel direct background-subtraction technique, offering results with small dependence on the background model assumptions. With a fiducial mass of only 3.50$\pm$0.01 kg of $^{136}$Xe-enriched xenon, 90% C.L. lower limits to the neutrinoless double beta decay are found in the T$_{1/2}^{0\nu}>5.5\times10^{23}-1.3\times10^{24}$ yr range, depending on the method. The presented techniques stand as a proof-of-concept for the searches to be implemented with larger NEXT detectors.

The flow field studied was eight strongly impinging, radially injected jets, into a non-swirling mainstream flow in a cylindrical duct. Our previous paper (Heat Mass Transf. (2020) 56:2285-2302), showed that asymmetry in the solution is very likely to be an indication of the flow unsteadiness. Also, if the flow is asymmetric, even a time dependent flow solver would not represent the flow correctly if the computational domain is less than the complete cylindrical duct. Thus, the current numerical and topological study was conducted in a 360 degree (complete cylindrical duct) computational domain using a time dependent Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes URANS code. Results of this study confirm that the flow of strongly impinging jets is unsteady and asymmetric after the establishment of a regular flow pattern. The asymmetry appears to be cyclic at a frequency of < 2 Hz. We describe and benchmark a new quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) trapped-ion quantum computer based on a linear trap with periodic boundary conditions, which resembles a race track. The new system successfully incorporates several technologies crucial to future scalability, including electrode broadcasting, multi-layer RF routing, and magneto-optical trap (MOT) loading, while maintaining, and in some cases exceeding, the gate fidelities of previous QCCD systems. The system is initially operated with 32 qubits, but future upgrades will allow for more. We benchmark the performance of primitive operations, including an average state preparation and measurement error of 1.6(1)$\times 10^{-3}$, an average single-qubit gate infidelity of $2.5(3)\times 10^{-5}$, and an average two-qubit gate infidelity of $1.84(5)\times 10^{-3}$. The system-level performance of the quantum processor is assessed with mirror benchmarking, linear cross-entropy benchmarking, a quantum volume measurement of $\mathrm{QV}=2^{16}$, and the creation of 32-qubit entanglement in a GHZ state. We also tested application benchmarks including Hamiltonian simulation, QAOA, error correction on a repetition code, and dynamics simulations using qubit reuse. Non-Abelian topological order (TO) is a coveted state of matter with remarkable properties, including quasiparticles that can remember the sequence in which they are exchanged. These anyonic excitations are promising building blocks of fault-tolerant quantum computers. However, despite extensive efforts, non-Abelian TO and its excitations have remained elusive, unlike the simpler quasiparticles or defects in Abelian TO. In this work, we present the first unambiguous realization of non-Abelian TO and demonstrate control of its anyons. Using an adaptive circuit on Quantinuum's H2 trapped-ion quantum processor, we create the ground state wavefunction of $D_4$ TO on a kagome lattice of 27 qubits, with fidelity per site exceeding $98.4\%$. By creating and moving anyons along Borromean rings in spacetime, anyon interferometry detects an intrinsically non-Abelian braiding process. Furthermore, tunneling non-Abelions around a torus creates all 22 ground states, as well as an excited state with a single anyon -- a peculiar feature of non-Abelian TO.
