Abstract

For almost 20 years, the City of Stockholm, via Stokab, has strategically invested in the development of an open, operator-neutral fibre network for everyone. Many articles and reports have been written on this, but primarily from a journalistic perspective. However, no research studies were until now available on the economic effects which Stokab generates for Stockholm. Acreo Swedish ICT has therefore carried out a study. The study shows that these investments have achieved the desired effects on the city’s IT development and the establishment of IT-related activities, but also that they have generated significant economic benefits for society, enterprises and citizens. The final report ”Stokab, a socio-economic analysis” describes the Stokab model and its effects on the different stakeholders, analysing Stokab’s own economy, cost savings for the municipality and the county administration, as well as benefits for businesses and end users. Moreover, Stockholm is compared to Copenhagen, which has conditions similar to Stockholm, but where the municipality has not taken an active role in the city’s fibre network. The socio-economic return on Stokab investment in fibre infrastructure is estimated in this study to over 16 billion SEK, or €1.9 billion at the current exchange rate. This result is based on a few quantifiable effects alone and we expect the actual return to be considerably larger

Abstract

The emergence of more bandwidth efficient modulation formats in high speed optical communications calls for more sophisticated measurement and characterisation techniques than conventional intensity measurements. We have investigated the use of linear spectrograms to assess the phase and intensity profiles of 40 Gbit/s alternating phase return-to-zero pulses (Fig. 1(A)), before and after propagation in an installed fibre link.

Abstract

The frequency domain equalizers (FDEs) employing two types of overlap-add zero-padding (OLA-ZP) methods are applied to compensate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s non-return-to-zero polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (NRZ-PDM-QPSK) coherent optical transmission system. Simulation results demonstrate that the OLA-ZP methods can achieve the same acceptable performance as the overlap-save method. The required minimum overlap (or zero-padding) in the FDE is derived, and the optimum fast Fourier transform length to minimize the computational complexity is also analyzed., QC 20110629

Recent optical technologies are providing higher flexibility to next generation access networks: on the one hand, providing progressive FTTx and specifically FTTH deployment, progressively shortening the copper access network; on the other hand, also opening fixed-mobile convergence solutions in next generation PON architectures. It is provided an overview of the optical subsystems developed for the implementation of the proposed NG-Access Networks.

Abstract

Intrachannel four-wave mixing (IFWM) represents main source of impairments in fiber transmission at 40 Gb/s. A number of phase modulation techniques have been proposed to suppress the IFWM. In this paper, we study a cost-effective way of increasing the nonlinear tolerance of a 40-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing transmission system by asynchronous phase modulation (APM). This can be achieved with one phase modulator placed after the wavelength multiplexer so that cost is shared by all channels. We show, by means of numerical simulations and laboratory experiments, that APM greatly improves the performance of ON-OFF-keying transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

In this paper, an efficient single Mach-Zender modulator (MZM) implementation of alternate-phase return to zero (APRZ), which combines carrier-suppressed return to zero (CSRZ)'s ease of implementation with APRZ's nonlinear tolerance, is analyzed. In particular, the first numerical study of 67%-duty-cycle single-MZM APRZ over a 40-Gb/s 5 × 100-km link, in terms of nonlinear, dispersion, and filtering tolerance, comparing it with 33% RZ, 33% APRZ, and standard 67% CSRZ, is presented. The results show that APRZ with phase shift close to π/2 is the optimum choice, independent of specific transmitter implementation. A new mechanism is also discovered, based on the interference of ghost pulses with the original pulse train, which improves the nonlinear tolerance of CSRZ in a 40-Gb/s transmission.
