Abstract

Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface archaeological potential of a c. 2.9ha area of land at Hardwick Hill, Banbury. A fluxgate gradiometer survey was successfully completed across the site. The geophysical results are characterised by the detection of a ridge and furrow ploughing regime across the whole survey area; a second smaller group of agricultural features have been identified only in the northwest corner of the survey area, and could be related to another phase of cultivation or could be drainage related. Possible archaeological activity has been identified in the form of linear anomalies forming incomplete enclosures and/or former field systems of uncertain date. Natural variations in the survey area's geology have also been identified. The impact of modern activity on the results is limited to the edges of the survey area.

Abstract

Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface archaeological potential of a c.9.5ha area of land to the east of Nayland Road, Great Horkesley, Essex. A fluxgate magnetometer survey was successfully completed, and no anomalies suggestive of significant archaeological features were identified. The geophysical data has recorded natural variations, which correlate well with the superficial deposits of sand and gravel identified in the site; these have produced a relatively noisy magnetic background. Anomalies caused by firing or burning activities have been identified along the eastern boundary; these are of undetermined date. Debris anomalies have been recorded, possibly associated with landscaping activities occurring through the late 19th - early 20th centuries east of the Manorhouse Farm. Modern activity is limited to the field edges.

A fluxgate magnetometer survey was successfully completed, and anomalies of possible archaeological origin have been identified. These are recorded as rectilinear and curvilinear partial enclosures, one likely to have a field system origin. The geophysical results primarily reflect the effects of agricultural activity and natural variations in the soil and geology. Interference from modern activity is limited to the edges of the fields.

Abstract

Introduction: RECIPE study was designed to assess the impact of dietary supplementation with fermented milk enriched with plant sterols (FMPS) on the nutritional behavior, lifestyle and the joint therapeutic responsibility of hypercholesterolemic patients. Methods: Observational, prospective, multicenter, international study, was conducted to assess dietary habits and other lifestyle components in hypercholesterolemic patients in whom the general practitioner indicated FMPS supplementation. Nutritional, lifestyle and clinical data were collected at the initial visit and after a 4 months follow-up. The biochemical and anthropometric data were retrieved from medical records obtained at baseline and 4 months. Results: We report the results of Spain. Two hundred and one physicians who provided valid data of 1044 patients participated. The addition of FMPS was associated with improved overall nutritional index, being adequate initially in 28.2% of patients, and increasing up to 75.2% at the end of the study (P< 001). This nutritional change was associated with an improvement in the lipid profile and anthropometric data. Patients more adherent to therapy generally achieved a better result in all parameters compared to non-compliant ones. Conclusions: The addition of FMPS to a diet designed to reduce the LDL enhances the patient's attitude regarding changes in lifestyle, leading to better overall control of dyslipidemia and anthropometric improvement. © 2012 Elsevier España, S.L. and SEA.

Pretendemos informar a un amplio elenco de lectores, entre los que no faltaran juristas y profesionales de la docencia del Derecho. Abstract

Background: Staging of mediastinal lymph nodes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is mandatory. The maximum Standard Uptake Value (SUVmax) obtained using F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is the best non-invasive technique available for this evaluation, but its performance varies from center to center. The aim of the present study was to identify FDG-PET predictors of mediastinal malignancy that are able to minimize intercenter variability and improve the selection of subsequent staging procedures. Method: A multicenter study of NSCLC patients staged through FDG-PET and endobronchial ultrasonography with needle aspiration (EBUS-NA) was performed using therapeutic surgery with systematic nodal dissection as gold standard. Intercenter variability and predictive power for mediastinal malignancy of different FDG-PET measures were assessed, as well as the role of these measures for selecting additional staging procedures. Results: One hundred and twenty-one NSCLC patients, of whom 94 (72%) had ⩾1 hypermetabolic spots in the mediastinum, were included in the study. Mean SUVmax of the primary tumor was 12.3 (SD 6.3), and median SUVmax of the highest hypermetabolic spots in the mediastinum was 3.9 (IQR 2.4-7). Variability of FDG-PET measures between hospitals was statistically significant (p = 0.016 and p < 0.001 respectively), but lost significance when SUVmax in the mediastinum was expressed as a ratio or a subtraction from the primary tumor (SUVmax mediastinum/tumor, p = 0.083; and SUVmax mediastinum - tumor, p = 0.428 respectively). SUVmax mediastinum/ tumor showed higher accuracy in the ROC analysis (AUC 0.77 CI 0.68-0.85, p < 0.001), and showed predictive power for mediastinal malignancy when using a 0.4 cutoff (OR 6.62, 95%CI 2.98-14.69). Sensitivities and negative predictive values of clinical staging through EBUS-NA attained values ranging between 57% and 92% after FDG-PET, which improved with additional techniques when the tumor had a diameter >3 cm and/or a SUVmax mediastinum/tumor ratio >0.4. Conclusion: The SUVmax mediastinum/tumor ratio is a good predictor of regional tumor extension in NSCLC. 48. Coagulation of Anionically Stabilized Polymer Particles

Abstract

The stability particles produced by emulsion polymerization and stabilized by the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, an electrosteric surfactant with a short ethylene oxide chain, or simply with sulfate end groups were studied by turbidity measurements. Results are compared to those of electrostatic stability models based on the Derjaguin−Landau−Verwey−Overbeek theory. The good agreement between experimental and theoretical data shows that the electrosteric surfactant could be described through electrostatic approaches and that the steric contributions could be neglected. This model was incorporated into a population balance model in order to describe the coagulation between particles in a stirred tank reactor in the absence of reaction. This model was validated with experiments in which coagulation between polymer particles was provoked by electrolyte addition. The decrease of the number of particles and the resulting monomodal particle size distribution were correctly described by the model, confirming the correct determination of coagulation rates as a function of the particle diameter and surfactant concentration.
