Abstract

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise in numerous domains, there are concerns about generalizability to out-of-sample data. This is currently addressed by centrally sharing ample, and importantly diverse, data from multiple sites. However, such centralization is challenging to scale (or even not feasible) due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative to train accurate and generalizable ML models, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present findings from the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 healthcare institutions across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, utilizing the largest dataset of such patients ever used in the literature (25,256 MRI scans from 6,314 patients). We demonstrate a 33% improvement over a publicly trained model to delineate the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% improvement over the tumor's entire extent. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more studies in healthcare informed by large and diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further quantitative analyses for glioblastoma via performance optimization of our consensus model for eventual public release, and 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of FL at such scale and task complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data sharing., Comment: federated learning, deep learning, convolutional neural network, segmentation, brain tumor, glioma, glioblastoma, FeTS, BraTS

Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations resolve the structure and dynamics of metallic glass Cu$_{100-x}$Hf$_{x}$ films and demonstrate STM control of aging at a metallic glass surface. Surface clusters exhibit heterogeneous hopping dynamics. Low Hf concentration films feature an aged surface of larger, slower clusters. Argon ion-sputtering destroys the aged configuration, yielding a surface in constant fluctuation. Abstract

The concept of home has often been recognized as a foundational concept in popular science-fiction (SF) as the point of departure or place of return in the space odyssey, timetravel mission, or heroic quest. Most SF narratives evidently centre on notions of homelessness, homecomings, threats to home or journeys from it. However, independent of the film’s narrative, home is also considered within SF as the place of the audience member, spatially and temporally, the distinction of which is critical for establishing the alien encounter with the putative future world. As a critical genre, SF continues to offer insights into the contemporary milieu that have significant implications for all areas of cultural research and, more specifically, architecture. While architectural literature and practice has confirmed a sustained interest in SF, representations of home are often overlooked in favour of the various innovations and special effects on-screen. It is the intention of the research to elevate the discussion of home in SF from its often abstract engagement by architectural texts, and more specifically question how notions of home are expressed in SF film through the various narratives and designed environments. Thus, the research posits the notion of home as providing the essential link between SF and architecture by establishing a theoretical framework and detailed analyses of four films adapted from the prolific American SF author, Philip K. Dick: Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall (1990), Stephen Spielberg’s Minority Report (2002), and Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly (2006). The research examines science, method, and truth, in relation to the foundations of the SF genre and its various representations of home. Furthermore, by comparing and contrasting modern and postmodern approaches to design, similarities are drawn between the cultural mechanisms of SF imagery and architecture. The research draws from SF theorists such as Darko Suvin, Scott Bukatman, and Vivian Sobchack, as well as authors focussed on notions of home such as Witold Rybczynski, Mary Douglas, Juhanni Pallasmaa, and David Morley. Topics related to contemporary identity construction, gender roles, domestic environments, global mobility and connectivity, spectacle, surveillance, tourism, and technology, are scattered throughout the chapters offering a broad survey of the notion of home as represented in contemporary SF with the intent of generating further architectural discussion.

21. Recent sedimentation in three adjacent fjord-lakes on the Quebec North Shore (eastern Canada): facies analysis, laminae preservation, and potential for varve formation

Abstract

This paper analyzes short gravity cores sampled along transects in three adjacent deep fjord-lakes (lakes Pentecote, Walker, and Pasteur) on the Quebec North Shore, eastern Canada, to evaluate the distribution of laminated sediments and potential for varve formation. Facies analysis based on lithological description, digital photos, CT-scan images, and bathymetric data allowed for the identification of four main sediment facies, namely laminated sediments, partially laminated sediments, bioturbated sediments, and massive sediments. Direct evidence that Lake Walker undergoes thermal stratification was monitored from 2014 to 2016. Mean sedimentation rates and sedimentation fluxes of postglacial sediments in the distal basin of the three studied lakes are [less than or equal to]0.12 cm [a.sup.-1] and 0.03-0.16 g [cm.sup.-2] [a.sup.-1], respectively, based on [.sup.210]Pb, [.sup.137]Cs, and AMS radiocarbon dating. On the basis of thin section image analysis and [.sup.210]Pb (CIC) chronology model, Lake Pentecote contains mainly massive, partially laminated sediments, while Lake Pasteur contains partially laminated sediments and non-annual varve-like sediments. However, Lake Walker contains laminated sediments that are likely varves. The increased potential for laminae preservation observed in Lake Walker compared to lakes Pentecote and Pasteur is associated with more favourable morphological characteristics including higher relative depth, mean depth, maximum depth, and topographic exposure. Cet article analyse de courtes carottes gravitaires échantillonnées le long de transects dans trois lacs de fjord profonds adjacents (les lacs Pentecôte, Walker et Pasteur) sur la Côte-Nord du Québec (est du Canada), afin d'évaluer la répartition de sédiments laminés et le potentiel de formation de varves. L'analyse des faciès basée sur la description lithologique, des photos numériques, des images par tomodensitométrie et des données bathymétriques, a permis l'identification de quatre principaux faciès sédimentaires : des sédiments laminés, des sédiments partiellement laminés, des sédiments bioturbés et des sédiments massifs. Des preuves directes sur la stratification thermique du Lac Walker ont été acquises de 2014 à 2016. Abstract

This essay posits the role that the spaces for architectural production have played in supporting a design ethos that has historically neglected our relationship with the Land, and how its reconceptualization could contribute to a ‘spiritual and cultural’ shift through a placed-based ethical framework. More specifically, the space where design typically takes place is most often described in English as the “studio”, a term that has been adopted by universities and professional offices alike, and is broadly considered the core of architectural education and production around the world. Yet, surprisingly, we rarely question - why a “studio”? What is the nature of a “studio” exactly, and how does this potentially impact how we teach design and, subsequently, what we design? Can an element of the sacred infiltrate the spaces of architectural production in the twenty-first century in an effort to prioritize the flourishing of all life on our planet, and how can Indigenous knowledge guide us along this path? The essay first examines the history of the “studio” and questions its ongoing relevance, as well as recent alternatives. This is followed by a proposition for the concept of a “design lodge” that might best be able to inspire “transformational” change in architectural education by transcending conventional fixations on object-centred design.
