Marine current power is attracting more attention as a renewable energy option. Similar to wind power, marine current power often requires a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method to optimize power extraction from the free‐flowing water. Research into MPPT methods for marine current power remains limited. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive investigation of MPPT methods for marine current power, building upon similar research in wind power. Three methods, namely the optimal tip speed ratio (OTSR), optimal torque (OT), and two variants of the perturb and observe (P&O) method, are explored. Using a simulation model developed for a specific marine current energy converter, where hydrodynamic calculations are coupled with electrical simulations, the study demonstrates that the OTSR method achieves MPPT with a comparably fast convergence time. After a change in water speed, the OTSR method achieves optimal operation within two turbine rotations. Additionally, the P&O methods are shown to achieve MPPT, albeit with a significantly longer convergence time. However, the P&O methods can be more convenient since no model of the system is required, and no water speed measurements are necessary. The proposed implementation of the OT method underperforms but positions the system close to the optimal operational point. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The electrification of remote islands has long been a subject of research interest, primarily because of their historical reliance on fossil fuels, leading to a significant carbon footprint. Recent advancements in wave energy converters offer a promising avenue to make these islands more self-sustainable while considerably reducing carbon emissions. However, the persistent issue of voltage dips due to weaker grids continues to pose a challenge. This study introduces a multi-mode converter control strategy with the goal of electrifying remote islands, employing a linear generator-based wave energy converter in a unified electrical model. Various scenarios, including voltage dips and mainland grid disconnection, are simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. The study demonstrates the converter's ability to transition swiftly and smoothly in response to these scenarios, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that the power quality at the point of common coupling remains well within acceptable standards.

- Abstract
The power delivered by a voltage source inverter needs to be filtered to fulfill grid code requirements. A commonly used filter technology is the LCL-filter. An issue with the LCL-filter is the occurrence of a resonance peak, which can be mitigated with active or passive damping methods. The transfer function of the filter is often used to investigate the frequency response of the system and propose damping methods. The use of an LC-filter combined with a power transformer to form an LCL-filter has not been extensively investigated. Therefore, the study in this article introduces a model for an LC-filter and power transformer for the grid connection and a derived transfer function for the model. The transfer function for the system is validated with simulations and experimental investigations. The results from simulations and the results from a direct solution of the derived analytical function overlap almost perfectly. The magnitudes of the experimental results are approximately 1 dB lower than the simulation and analytical results before the resonance frequency. At the resonance frequency, the experimental results are approximately 13.4 dB lower. The resonance frequency, however, occurs at approximately the same frequency. It is also concluded that the system is significantly damped.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Wave energy has been an immense area of interest in research and industry in our move towards a sustainable energy production society due to its high energy density and surface area. However, the grid connection of wave energy converters is still one of the major challenges due to the complexity of varying wave resources (amplitude and frequency). Wave energy converter grid integration can lead to several potential challenges, such as voltage fluctuations, harmonics and flicker. Using an energy storage system can help mitigate a few challenges by balancing the grid demand with the wave energy converter power supply. Hence improving the power quality. This study assesses the power quality of wave energy converters equipped with energy storage against the scenario without any energy storage at different power levels. The power quality in this paper is investigated using total harmonic distortion (THD)of the grid current, dc-link voltage ripple and battery current ripple. The study shows that the addition of a hybrid energy storage system lowers the grid current THDat the point of common coupling (PCC), stabilizes the dc-link voltage ripple and reduces the stress of the battery.

- Abstract
Important questions to enable the use of marine current energy are how the electrical system is designed, how multiple energy converters are interconnected offshore and how the power is transmitted to the shore. The Division of Electricity at Uppsala University have constructed and deployed a marine current energy converter in the river Daläven in Söderfors, Sweden. In the study presented in this article, a model of a near-shore low-voltage AC collection grid and a near-shore low-voltage DC collection grid is presented for the technology at the Söderfors test site. The models are implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. For collection grids of five turbines, it is shown that the proposed control schemes are able to deliver power to the distribution grid. The controllers are able to achieve this even when one turbine is suddenly disconnected from the grid. Furthermore, it is shown that the conduction losses of the DC system are higher than the losses of the AC system for nominal and high water speeds. However, in a qualitative comparison between the systems it is concluded that despite the higher losses, the DC system can be an interesting option. This is because fewer components need to be placed in the turbine, which is beneficial in offshore systems where space is a limiting factor. Furthermore, a DC system can be less expensive since fewer cables are needed.

- Abstract
Anthropogenic activities and their influences on aquatic systems is an important topic, especially considering the growing interest in using the earth's resources in a sustainable way. One of those anthropogenic activities is the introduction of renewable technologies into the aquatic environment such as instream turbines. Environmental studies around those technologies are often still ongoing due to their novelty. During the spring of 2018, juvenile individuals of two salmonid species, Atlantic salmon and brown trout were released upstream a vertical axis instream turbine in the river Dal (Dalälven) in eastern Sweden. The aim of this study was to investigate the swimming behavior of the salmonids around a small-scale prototype vertical axis instream turbine. The swimming pattern and the possible response of avoiding the vertical axis instream turbine were documented with a multi beam sonar. A control area, next to the turbine, was used as reference. No consistent results were shown for trout as they were passing the control area with a statistically high variation, and specimens were rarely observed in proximity of the turbine, neither if the turbine was operating nor at stand still. Salmon clearly avoided the operating turbine, but did not avoid the turbine when it was at stand still, and was often observed swimming straight through the turbine area. These findings indicate that operating this type of instream turbine in a river affects the swimming behavior of Atlantic salmon but is unlikely to affect its migration paths. For brown trout, the statistical results are inconclusive, although data indicate a response of avoiding the turbine. The species are in little risk to suffer physical harm as no fish entered the rotating turbine, despite very turbid water conditions.

- Abstract
Marine energy resources could be crucial in meeting the increased demand for clean electricity. To enable the use of marine energy resources, developing efficient and durable offshore electrical systems is vital. Currently, there are no large-scale commercial projects with marine energy resources, and the question of how to design such electrical systems is still not settled. A natural starting point in investigating this is to draw on experiences and research from offshore wind power. This article reviews different collection grid topologies and key components for AC and DC grid structures. The review covers aspects such as the type of components, operation and estimated costs of commercially available components. A DC collection grid can be especially suitable for offshore marine energy resources, since the transmission losses are expected to be lower, and the electrical components could possibly be made smaller. Therefore, five DC collection grid topologies are proposed and qualitatively evaluated for marine energy resources using submerged and non-submerged marine energy converters. The properties, advantages and disadvantages of the proposed topologies are discussed, and it is concluded that a suitable electrical system for a marine energy farm will most surely be based on a site-specific techno-economic analysis.

This thesis presents how deep learning can be utilized for detecting humans ina wildlife setting using image classification. Two different solutions have beenimplemented where both of them use a camera-equipped microprocessor to cap-ture the images. In one of the solutions, the deep learning model is run on themicroprocessor itself, which requires the size of the model to be as small as pos-sible. The other solution sends images from the microprocessor to a more pow-erful computer where a larger object detection model is run. Both solutions areevaluated using standard image classification metrics and compared against eachother. To adapt the models to the wildlife environment, transfer learningis usedwith training data from a similar setting that has been manually collected andannotated. The thesis describes a complete system’s implementation and results, including data transfer, parallel computing, and hardware setup. One of the contributions of this thesis is an algorithm that improves the classifi-cation performance on images where a human is far away from the camera. Thealgorithm detects motion in the images and extracts only the area where thereis movement. This is specifically important on the microprocessor, where theclassification model is too simple to handle those cases. By only applying theclassification model to this area, the task is more simple, resulting in better per-formance. In conclusion, when integrating this algorithm, a model running onthe microprocessor gives sufficient results to run as a camera trap for humans. However, test results show that this implementation is still quite underperform-ing compared to a model that is run on a more powerful computer.

- Abstract
This paper presents a simulation model of the grid connection system for a marine current energy converter deployed in the river Dal (Dalälven) at Söderfors, Sweden. The implementation of the model is done in Matlab/Simulink. The experimental station consists of a five-bladed turbine connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and a bidirectional back-to-back (B2B) converter for the grid connection. The generator side of the electrical system consists of a 2-level voltage source converter (2L-VSC). The generator side converter is controlled using field-oriented control (FOC) with zero d-axis current. The grid side converter is a 3-level cascaded H-bridge voltage source converter (3L-CHBVSC) and is controlled using voltage oriented control (VOC) with phase-locked loop (PLL). Simulations are run for constant water speeds as well as for stepwise increases of the speed and for real water speeds from the test site. The controllers are confirmed to be able to correctly control the system for the simulated cases. The power losses are evaluated using steady state simulations and the relative power losses are shown to be the smallest for a water speed of around 1.30 m/s. The largest contribution to the total losses is shown to be from the generator.

This paper validates a simulation model that couples an electrical model in Simulink with a hydrodynamic vortex-model by comparing with experimental data. The simulated system is a vertical axis current turbine connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator in a direct drive configuration. Experiments of load and no load operation were conducted to calibrate the losses of the turbine, generator and electrical system. The power capture curve of the turbine has been simulated as well as the behaviour of a step response for a change in tip speed ratio. The simulated results agree well with experimental data except at low rotational speed where the accuracy of the calibration of the drag losses is reduced. Funders: Bixia Miljöfond

Ocean energy is a field of growing interest when it comes to renewable energy thanks to its high density of energy per unit area, and to the high predictability. Conversion of hydrokinetic energy, found in marine currents, is the utilization of the energy in free-flowing water for conversion to electric energy. This thesis presents experimental data from a test site with a marine current converter. The converter system features a vertical axis turbine directly connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator placed on the riverbed. The converter is controlled by an electrical system. The focus of the work is to evaluate power control methods and turbine performance. Results of a simple voltage control system is presented and compared with operation without control. The turbine type in the converter system is not self-starting. The startup power and energy has been investigated through experiments. The converter system has been connected to the local electric utility grid and the first experimental results are presented. The performance of the turbine for a range of water speeds is investigated. The range of experiments are limited by the water velocity at the experimental site. To address the issue, a simulation model coupling the electrical system and hydrodynamic model into one has been validated. One factor affecting the turbine's power capture is the angle of the blade pitch relative to the water flow. The influence of blade pitch on turbine performance is studied with experiments and two 3D simulation models. The possibilities of powering a desalination plant using marine current converters is discussed. Water speed data from outside the east coast of South Africa has been used for a case study. The study investigates how many people can early be supplied with freshwater using the converter system at the experimental site as a model.

An experimental marine current power station has been deployed in Söoderfors, Sweden. It comprises a vertical axis turbine directly connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator rated at 7.5 kW. The generator is controlled by a Back-To-Back 2L-3L Cascaded H-Bridge full scale bi-directional Power Converter located on shore. This paper presents the first test results of the power converter, including grid connection. The startup of the turbine, power extraction and initial active power injection to the grid, at 50 % of rated power, operated as predicted by laboratory experiments and simulations. After 40 seconds of grid connection the safety system disconnect the grid converter due to high currents injected to the grid. The problem is mostly likely associated with the current controller in the dq0 frame. Further tuning of the PI regulators and the potential addition of an anti-windup could mitigate the control issue.

- Abstract
Some countries are facing issues on freshwater and electricity production, which can be addressed with the use of renewable energy powered desalination systems. In the following study, a reverse osmosis desalination plant powered by marine current energy converters is suggested. The marine current energy converters are designed at Uppsala University in Sweden, specifically for utilizing low water speeds (1–2 m/s). Estimations on freshwater production for such a system, in South Africa, facing the Indian Ocean was presented and discussed. It is concluded that the desalination plant cannot by itself supply freshwater for a population all the time, due to periods of too low water speeds (<1 m/s), but for 75% of the time. By using ten marine current energy converters, each with a nominal power rating of 7.5 kW, combined with a reverse osmosis desalination plant and water storage capacity of 2800 m3, it is possible to cover the basic freshwater demand of 5000 people. More studies on the hydrokinetic resource of the Western Indian Ocean, system cost, technology development, environmental and social aspects are necessary for more accurate results.

A marine current power station has been deployed in Söderfors, Sweden. It comprises a five bladed fixed pitch vertical axis H-rotor turbine directly connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator. The turbine is rated for 1.3 m/s, but at lower water speeds the turbine is generally not self starting. This paper investigates the energy and power needed to at low speeds start the turbine electrically with a BrushLess DC (BLDC) motor until he turbines gives a net positive torque to the generator. A range of startup BLDC powers have been investigated. It is shown that for three water speeds (0.98 m/s, 1.04 m/s and 1.16 m/s) the energy needed for start up is equivalent to less than 1.2 s of power production at maximum power capture of the turbine. The startup time is mostly dependent on BLDC power setting, not on water speed. A BLDC power of 1/7th of rated power of the machine is enough to start the machine within 2 seconds. The results suggest that a higher BLDC power than that will not significantly reduce the startup time nor reduce the energy needed (increase the efficiency of the startup process). The water speed has the highest impact on the time it takes to recover the energy needed for startup once the BLDC power is well above the losses in the system. Marine Current Power

This thesis investigates the load control of a marine current energy converter using a vertical axis turbine mounted on a permanent magnet synchronous generator. The purpose of this thesis is to show the work done in the so far relatively uncharted territory of control systems for hydro kinetic energy conversion. The work is in its early stage and is meant to serve as a guide forfuture development of the control system. An experimental power station has been deployed and the first results are presented. A comparison between three load control methods has been made; a fixedAC load, a fixed pulse width modulated DC load and a DC bus voltage control of a DC load. Experimental results show that the DC bus voltage control reduces the variation of rotational speed with a factor of 3.5. For all three cases, the tip speed ratio of the turbine can be kept close to the expected optimal tip speed ratio. However, for all three cases the average extracted power was significantly lower than the average power available in the turbine times the estimated maximum power coefficient. A maximum power point tracking system, with or without water velocity measurement, should increase the average extracted power. A simulation model has been validated using experimental data. The simulated system consists of the electrical system and a hydrodynamic vortex model for the turbine. Experiments of no load operation were conducted to calibrate the drag losses of the turbine. Simulations were able to predict the behaviour in a step response for a change in tip speed ratio when the turbine was operated close to optimal tip speed ratio. The start position of the turbine was varied in the simulation to view the influence on the step response from a changed turbine position relative to the direction of the water flow. This report describes a master thesis for a Master of Engineering exam with focus on mechanical engineering and design at Luleå University of Technology, LTU. The thesis is performed in collaboration with Jama Mining Machines AB by Johan Forslund, partly located in Skelleftehamn and partly at the University. The goal is to increase the strength of two of Jama Mining Machines components found in the boom of the scaler SBU 8000 with rotator. The strength is increased by changing the design of the specific components. An analysis of the current situation for the current design is carried out to identify the necessary improvements for the new design. The development of the new design uses a structural product development process that is inspired by Ulrich & Eppinger. To verify the improvement of the new design strength static calculations by the finite element method is used in SolidWorks, a Computer Aided Design program. The forces used in the calculations is only a theoretical approximation, no experiments are conducted to describe the correct forces. Therefore are the stresses that are presented in the report not the real stresses that are reflected in the components. The calculations are instead used for comparisons between the current design and the new concepts from the product development process. The increased strength of the new design is verified as a percental decrease of the maximum stress compared with the current design. The final concepts design is developed at detailed level and presented to Jama Mining Machines as a proposition on manufacturing drawings for the new design of the specific components. - Abstract
As the demand for clean energy continues to grow, there is an increased focus on alternative sources of renewable energy, including marine current power. Similar to wind power, marine current power often requires a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method to optimize power extraction from the free-flowing water. Despite the growing interest in marine current power, research into MPPT methods for marine current power remains limited. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of MPPT methods specifically tailored for marine current power, building upon similar research in wind power. Additionally, the P&O method is shown to achieve MPPT, albeit with a longer convergence time. The proposed implementation of the OT method underperforms but still positions the system close to the optimal operational point.

- Abstract
Marine current energy represents a globally abundant yet largely untapped renewable energy source, offering greater predictability than other sources such as wind. Consequently, it has the potential to play a vital role in the green transition. A critical consideration for harnessing marine current energy is the design of the electrical grid to accommodate multiple turbines. Therefore, this paper presents a study that explores three types of DC collection grids (series, parallel, and star) for a specific marine current energy converter. A simulation model developed for the marine current energy converter is introduced and utilized to assess these topologies for grids comprising ten identical turbines subjected to varying water speeds. The designed topologies are intended for low-voltage and nearshore applications. The simulation results demonstrate that the series collection grid requires a significantly higher DC grid voltage compared to the other topologies for the turbines to operate correctly. Additionally, the study reveals that all three grid topologies can effectively transmit power to the distribution grid with similar power losses.

Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency may be a potentially modifiable risk factor in patients with orthopaedic conditions including Charcot arthropathy. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in patients with Charcot arthropathy., Methods: All patients with Charcot arthropathy seen in our foot and ankle surgery clinic from January 2017 through June 2021 were screened for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Patients were categorized as sufficient, insufficient, or deficient based on previously accepted guidelines. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency was calculated., Results: A total of 57 subjects were included in this study after meeting the inclusion criteria. Of these, 27 (47.4%) were found to be deficient in vitamin D, 21 (36.8%) were insufficient in vitamin D, and 9 (15.8%) were sufficient in vitamin D. Overall, 84.2% of the cohort was found to be either insufficient or deficient in vitamin D., Conclusion: Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with Charcot arthropathy. As such, it is possible that this may play a role in the pathogenesis of Charcot arthropathy and may represent a potentially modifiable risk factor that could be optimized during the management of patients with Charcot arthropathy., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Complications and inferior outcomes of fractures in the setting of diabetes mellitus (DM) are well documented. The incidence of DM is increasing rapidly, particularly in an aging and obese population. Thus, the combination of DM and fracture is becoming a serious health problem worldwide. As many fractures are relatively uncomplicated in the healthy patient population, a concerted effort to improve outcomes of fractures in patients with DM is warranted. In this article, we review relevant studies and examine the pathobiological mechanisms influencing fracture outcomes, including complications related to bone and soft-tissue healing, and infection.
