Abstract

We report an airborne gravity survey with an absolute gravimeter based on atom interferometry and two relative gravimeters: a classical LaCoste\&Romberg (L\&R) and a novel iMAR strap-down Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). We estimated measurement errors for the quantum gravimeter ranging from 0.6 to 1.3 mGal depending on the flight conditions and the filtering used. Similar measurement errors are obtained with iMAR strapdown gravimeter but the long term stability is five times worse. The traditional L\&R platform gravimeter shows larger measurement errors (3 - 4 mGal). Airborne measurements have been compared to marine, land and altimetry derived gravity data. We obtain a good agreement for the quantum gravimeter with standard deviations and means on differences below or equal to 2 mGal. This study confirms the potential of quantum technology for absolute airborne gravimetry which is particularly interesting for mapping shallow water or mountainous areas and for linking ground and satellite measurements with homogeneous absolute referencing.

Abstract

We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Abstract

Measuring gravity from an aircraft is essential in geodesy, geophysics and exploration. Today, only relative sensors are available for airborne gravimetry. This is a major drawback because of the calibration and drift estimation procedures which lead to important operational constraints and measurement errors. Here, we report an absolute airborne gravimeter based on atom interferometry. This instrument has been first tested on a motion simulator leading to gravity measurements noise of 0.3 mGal for 75 s filtering time constant. Then, we realized an airborne campaign across Iceland in April 2017. From a repeated line and crossing points, we obtain gravity measurements with an estimated error between 1.7 and 3.9 mGal. The airborne measurements have also been compared to upward continued ground gravity data and show differences with a standard deviation ranging from 3.3 to 6.2 mGal and a mean value ranging from -0.7 mGal to -1.9 mGal.

16. Revisiting ice sheet mass balance: insights into changing dynamics in Greenland and Antarctica from ICESat-2

Abstract

The time series of observations from NASA’s latest satellite laser altimetry, the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) are now mature to revisit the methodology for estimating surface elevation change and mass balance of ice sheets as proposed by Sørensen et al. (2011). Following the original ICESat study, we combine the derived ICESat-2 surface elevation change estimates with modelled changes of both the firn and the vertical bedrock to derive the total mass balance of the ice sheets, during the northern hemisphere mass balance years of October 2018 to September 2021. The method of converting the surface elevation change to mass balance change has been refined to obtain more reliable mass balance results for both ice sheets. From 2018 to 2021, we find that the grounded ice sheet in Antarctica has lost 135.7±27.3 Gt year-1, and the Greenland ice sheet 237.5±14.0 Gt year-1. Compared to 2003–2008, the ICESat-2 derived mass change of the Greenland ice sheet has a similar magnitude; however, the spatial pattern is changed and we observe reduced ice loss around Jakobshavn Isbræ and in the southeast accompanied by increased loss almost everywhere else and especially in the northern sector of the ice sheet. Our results show pervasive ice sheet loss across much of Greenland in recent years and an increase in loss from Antarctica compared to earlier studies. Parallels between the two ice sheets revealed by ICESat-2 data reflect atmospheric and oceanic drivers and show the importance of understanding ice sheets as components within the Earth system.

Comprenhending Antarctic coastal regions is fundamental to our understanding of the dynamic responses of the Antarctic ice sheet to ocean and climate warming.. These coastal regions contain multiple potential tipping points for the Antarctic Ice Sheet in a warming world, which must be better understood to predict the future magnitude and rates of global sea-level rise in a more robust fashion.The Antarctic Ice Sheet constitutes the largest uncertainty in future sea-level projections. 50 years of aereogeophysical observations have led to significant advances in our knowledge of bed topography and basal conditions and itheir influence on ice sheet dynamics. primarily in the interior of Antarctica Howevver, the critical coastal regions where the West and East Antarctic ice sheets meet the ocean and that are the sites of current and future change remain in many places insufficiently surveyed and understood.Here we present a new international initiative RINGS that aims to provide the first comprehensive pan-Antarctic wide coverage of the Antarctic coast mainly via new coordinated aerogeophysical campaigns. Abstract

Ice losses from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have accelerated since the 1990s, accounting for a significant increase in the global mean sea level. Here, we present a new 29-year record of ice sheet mass balance from 1992 to 2020 from the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE). We compare and combine 50 independent estimates of ice sheet mass balance derived from satellite observations of temporal changes in ice sheet flow, in ice sheet volume, and in Earth's gravity field. Between 1992 and 2020, the ice sheets contributed 21.0±1.9g€¯mm to global mean sea level, with the rate of mass loss rising from 105g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1 between 1992 and 1996 to 372g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1 between 2016 and 2020. In Greenland, the rate of mass loss is 169±9g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1 between 1992 and 2020, but there are large inter-annual variations in mass balance, with mass loss ranging from 86g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1 in 2017 to 444g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1 in 2019 due to large variability in surface mass balance. In Antarctica, ice losses continue to be dominated by mass loss from West Antarctica (82±9g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1) and, to a lesser extent, from the Antarctic Peninsula (13±5g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1). East Antarctica remains close to a state of balance, with a small gain of 3±15g€¯Gtg€¯yr-1, but is the most uncertain component of Antarctica's mass balance. Abstract

East Antarctica is the least understood continent involved in the assembly of Gondwana, a key stage in the global supercontinent cycle. Thick crust stretches from Dronning Maud Land to the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, suggesting that the Kuunga Orogen, formed during the collision of India and East Antarctica during Gondwana assembly, had a significant impact on the Precambrian lithosphere of parts of interior East Antarctica. Geological and geophysical research has revealed key aspects of the collisional East African-Antarctic Orogen and the subduction-related Ross Orogen along the paleo-Pacific margin of Gondwana. However, the paths and architecture of these different orogens in the entirely ice sheet covered and remote interior of East Antarctica have remained more difficult to investigate, making it even more challenging to link subduction and collisional processes leading to Gondwana assembly and growth. Here we present a new satellite-conformed aeromagnetic anomaly compilation that includes data recently collected between the interior of Dronning Maud Land and South Pole, together with airborne and satellite gravity imaging and seismological and geological constraints that provide tantalising new views into different crustal provinces, cratons and orogens in interior East Antarctica. We propose that a suture zone, partially exposed in the Shackleton Range, may cross the continent linking major fault systems imaged in the Gamburtsev Province and Princess Elisabeth Land. 31. Geodesy, climate and quantum – monitoring ice sheet changes by current and future satellites and ground networks

Abstract

The ice sheets of the earth are monitored efficiently with satellite altimetry, radar interferometry, and gravity field changes, as exemplified e.g. in the ESA Climate Change Initiative and ongoing IMBIE assessments. Combinations with additional airborne and in-situ GNSS network data further narrow down error estimates and improve spatial resolution, as exemplified in recent joint geodetic adjustments of Greenland ice sheet changes. For the future of ice sheet and glacier monitoring, a new series of gravity field and radar satellites are currently being developed, which will secure the environment modelling of both ice sheet melt, global hydrology and geodynamics in the next decades. Satellites such as GRACE-I, NGGM/MAGIC, CRISTAL and HARMONY are currently in various phases of development. New quantum gravity field satellites provide potentially disruptive technologies for improved satellite climate change monitoring in the 2030’s, with new pathfinder quantum missions such as the EU CARIOQA – Cold Atom Rubidium Interferometer in Orbit for Quantum Accelerometry – already on the way, with other space agencies preparing similar activities. 44. An embayment in the East Antarctic basement constrains the shape of the Rodinian continental margin

Abstract

East Antarctic provinces lay at the heart of both Rodinian and Gondwanan supercontinents, yet poor exposure and limited geophysical data provide few constraints on the region’s tectonic evolution. The shape of the Mawson Continent, the stable nucleus of East Antarctica, is one of Antarctica’s most important, but contested features, with implications for global plate reconstructions and local tectonic models. Here we show a major marginal embayment 500–700 km wide, cuts into the East Antarctic basement in the South Pole region. This embayment, defined by new aeromagnetic and other geophysical data, truncates the Mawson Continent, which is distinct from basement provinces flanking the Weddell Sea. We favour a late Neoproterozoic rifting model for embayment formation and discuss analogies with other continental margins. The embayment and associated basement provinces help define the East Antarctic nucleus for supercontinental reconstructions, while the inherited marginal geometry likely influenced evolution of the paleo-Pacific margin of Gondwana.

Abstract

We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies., We thank the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative for their support of the workshop that laid the basis for this paper.

Abstract

The Peninsular Malaysia Geodetic Vertical Datum 2000 (PMGVD2000) inherited several deficiencies due to offsets between local datums used, levelling error propagations, land subsidence, sea level rise, and sea level slopes along the southern half of the Malacca Strait on the west coast and the South China Sea in the east coast of the Peninsular relative to the Port Klang (PTK) datum point. To cater for a more reliable elevation-based assessment of both sea level rise and coastal flooding exposure, a new epoch-based height reference system PMGVD2022 has been developed. We have undertaken the processing of more than 30 years of sea level data from twelve tide gauge (TG) stations along the Peninsular Malaysia coast for the determination of the relative mean sea level (RMSL) at epoch 2022.0 with their respective trends and incorporates the quantification of the local vertical land motion (VLM) impact. PMGVD2022 is based on a new gravimetric geoid (PMGeoid2022) fitted to the RMSL at PTK. The orthometric height is realised through the GNSS levelling concept H = hGNSS–Nfit_PTK–NRMDT, where NRMDT is a constant offset due to the relative mean dynamic ocean topography (RMDT) between the fitted geoid at PTK and the local MSL datums along the Peninsular Malaysia coast. PMGVD2022 will become a single height reference system with absolute accuracies of better than ±3 cm and ±10 cm across most of the land/coastal area and the continental shelf of Peninsular Malaysia, respectively.
