1. Airborne absolute gravimetry with a quantum sensor, comparison with classical technologies

Abstract

We report an airborne gravity survey with an absolute gravimeter based on atom interferometry and two relative gravimeters: a classical LaCoste\&Romberg (L\&R) and a novel iMAR strap-down Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). We estimated measurement errors for the quantum gravimeter ranging from 0.6 to 1.3 mGal depending on the flight conditions and the filtering used. Similar measurement errors are obtained with iMAR strapdown gravimeter but the long term stability is five times worse. The traditional L\&R platform gravimeter shows larger measurement errors (3 - 4 mGal). Airborne measurements have been compared to marine, land and altimetry derived gravity data. We obtain a good agreement for the quantum gravimeter with standard deviations and means on differences below or equal to 2 mGal. This study confirms the potential of quantum technology for absolute airborne gravimetry which is particularly interesting for mapping shallow water or mountainous areas and for linking ground and satellite measurements with homogeneous absolute referencing.

Abstract

We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Abstract

Measuring gravity from an aircraft is essential in geodesy, geophysics and exploration. Today, only relative sensors are available for airborne gravimetry. This is a major drawback because of the calibration and drift estimation procedures which lead to important operational constraints and measurement errors. Here, we report an absolute airborne gravimeter based on atom interferometry. This instrument has been first tested on a motion simulator leading to gravity measurements noise of 0.3 mGal for 75 s filtering time constant. Then, we realized an airborne campaign across Iceland in April 2017. From a repeated line and crossing points, we obtain gravity measurements with an estimated error between 1.7 and 3.9 mGal. The airborne measurements have also been compared to upward continued ground gravity data and show differences with a standard deviation ranging from 3.3 to 6.2 mGal and a mean value ranging from -0.7 mGal to -1.9 mGal.

9. Arctic Freeboard and Snow Depth From Near-Coincident CryoSat-2 and ICESat-2 (CRYO2ICE) Observations:A First Examination of Winter Sea Ice During 2020–2022

Abstract

In the summer of 2020, ESA changed the orbit of CryoSat-2 to align periodically with NASA's ICESat-2 mission, a campaign known as CRYO2ICE, which allows for near-coincident CryoSat-2 and ICESat-2 observations in space and time over the Arctic until summer 2022, where the CRYO2ICE Antarctic campaign was initiated. This study investigates the Arctic CRYO2ICE radar and laser freeboards acquired by CryoSat-2 and ICESat-2, respectively, during the winter seasons of 2020–2022, and derives snow depths from their differences along the orbits. Along-track snow depth observations can provide high-resolution snow depth distributions which are vital for air-ice-ocean heat and momentum transfer, understanding light transmission, and snow-ice-interactions. Generally, ICESat-2 is backscattered at a surface above the elevation of the CryoSat-2 signal. CRYO2ICE snow depths are thinner than the daily model- or passive-microwave-based snow depth composites used for comparison, with differences being most pronounced in the Atlantic and Pacific Arctic. Satellite-derived and model-based snow estimates show similar seasonal accumulation over first-year ice, but CRYO2ICE has limited seasonal accumulation over multi-year ice which is linked to a slow increase in ICESat-2, and to some extent CryoSat-2, freeboards. We present a first estimation of spaceborne along-track snow depth estimates with average uncertainty of 10–11 ± 2–3 cm for 7-km segments, with random and systematic contributions of 7 and 4 cm. These observations show the potential for along-track dual-frequency observations of snow depth from the future Copernicus mission CRISTAL; but they also highlight uncertainties in radar penetration and the correlation length scales of snow topography that still require further research.

14. Arctic Freeboard and Snow Depth From Near‐Coincident CryoSat‐2 and ICESat‐2 (CRYO2ICE) Observations: A First Examination of Winter Sea Ice During 2020–2022.

Abstract

In the summer of 2020, ESA changed the orbit of CryoSat‐2 to align periodically with NASA's ICESat‐2 mission, a campaign known as CRYO2ICE, which allows for near‐coincident CryoSat‐2 and ICESat‐2 observations in space and time over the Arctic until summer 2022, where the CRYO2ICE Antarctic campaign was initiated. This study investigates the Arctic CRYO2ICE radar and laser freeboards acquired by CryoSat‐2 and ICESat‐2, respectively, during the winter seasons of 2020–2022, and derives snow depths from their differences along the orbits. Along‐track snow depth observations can provide high‐resolution snow depth distributions which are vital for air‐ice‐ocean heat and momentum transfer, understanding light transmission, and snow‐ice‐interactions. Generally, ICESat‐2 is backscattered at a surface above the elevation of the CryoSat‐2 signal. CRYO2ICE snow depths are thinner than the daily model‐ or passive‐microwave‐based snow depth composites used for comparison, with differences being most pronounced in the Atlantic and Pacific Arctic. Satellite‐derived and model‐based snow estimates show similar seasonal accumulation over first‐year ice, but CRYO2ICE has limited seasonal accumulation over multi‐year ice which is linked to a slow increase in ICESat‐2, and to some extent CryoSat‐2, freeboards. We present a first estimation of spaceborne along‐track snow depth estimates with average uncertainty of 10–11 ± 2–3 cm for 7‐km segments, with random and systematic contributions of 7 and 4 cm. These observations show the potential for along‐track dual‐frequency observations of snow depth from the future Copernicus mission CRISTAL; but they also highlight uncertainties in radar penetration and the correlation length scales of snow topography that still require further research. Plain Language Summary: Estimates of snow depth on sea ice are currently either outdated or limited in resolution, thus a need to derive high‐resolution snow depth on sea ice is crucial. Former studies have computed snow depth on sea ice using the difference in penetration between radar (Ku‐band) and laser (or Ka‐band radar) altimeters from different satellite missions, assuming the Ku‐band radar and laser/Ka‐band are reflected at the bottom and top of the snow pack, respectively. Those studies have resulted in monthly composites of snow depth due to a limited overlap of individual tracks between the satellite missions. Since the CRYO2ICE (CryoSat‐2/ICESat‐2 Resonance) campaign was initiated in July 2020, we have for the first time the possibility of investigating near‐coincident observations of spaceborne radar and laser altimeters. These results are important to initiate relevant discussions on snow depth retrieval in preparation for the future dual‐frequency altimeter mission, CRISTAL (Copernicus Polar Ice and Snow Topography Altimeter), expected to launch in 2028. Abstract

We combined an ensemble of satellite altimetry, interferometry, and gravimetry data sets using common geographical regions, time intervals, and models of surface mass balance and glacial isostatic adjustment to estimate the mass balance of Earth's polar ice sheets. We find that there is good agreement between different satellite methods--especially in Greenland and West Antarctica--and that combining satellite data sets leads to greater certainty. Between 1992 and 2011, the ice sheets of Greenland, East Antarctica, West Antarctica, and the Antarctic Peninsula changed in mass by -142 ± 49, +14 ± 43, -65 ± 26, and -20 ± 14 gigatonnes year(-1), respectively. Since 1992, the polar ice sheets have contributed, on average, 0.59 ± 0.20 millimeter year(-1) to the rate of global sea-level rise.

Abstract

One of the key components of this research has been the mapping of Antarctic bed topography and ice thickness parameters that are crucial for modelling ice flow and hence for predicting future ice loss and the ensuing sea level rise. Supported by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the Bedmap3 Action Group aims not only to produce new gridded maps of ice thickness and bed topography for the international scientific community, but also to standardize and make available all the geophysical survey data points used in producing the Bedmap gridded products. Here, we document the survey data used in the latest iteration, Bedmap3, incorporating and adding to all of the datasets previously used for Bedmap1 and Bedmap2, including ice bed, surface and thickness point data from all Antarctic geophysical campaigns since the 1950s. More specifically, we describe the processes used to standardize and make these and future surveys and gridded datasets accessible under the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data principles. With the goals of making the gridding process reproducible and allowing scientists to re-use the data freely for their own analysis, we introduce the new SCAR Bedmap Data Portal (https://bedmap.scar.org, last access: 1 March 2023) created to provide unprecedented open access to these important datasets through a web-map interface. We believe that this data release will be a valuable asset to Antarctic research and will greatly extend the life cycle of the data held within it. Abstract

Satellite gravimetry is a unique tool to monitor the Earth’s mass variations. Satellite missions like GRACE and GRACE Follow-On provide insights into the time-variable gravity field on a global scale to further improve our understanding of climate change processes and geophysical phenomena on scales of a few hundreds of kilometres. The users of gravity field products, however, require higher accuracies and a better spatial and/or temporal resolution, which are not met yet. The current GRACE-FO mission is not only limited by its observational geometry but also by limitations of current instruments, like electrostatic accelerometers. These challenges are partly tackled by current ESA and NASA initiatives to realise satellite gravimetry missions with overlapping mission lifetimes at different orbits. The sensor issue is addressed by the Cold Atom Rubidium Interferometer in Orbit for Quantum Accelerometer – Pathfinder Mission Preparation (CARIOQA-PMP) project. The main goal of CARIOQA-PMP is the preparation of a pathfinder mission with view to demonstrating an atom-quantum accelerometer in space within this decade and to realise a technological and programmatic roadmap for a quantum space gravimetry mission meeting user demands from a wide range of applications. This presentation will give an overview of the scientific activities within CARIOQA-PMP. These include the definition of the quantum pathfinder mission concept, the development of tools to simulate the quantum accelerometer and to estimate its performance, and to evaluate current end-user requirements, including the development of mission designs addressing these needs.CARIOQA-PMP is funded by the European Union., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Recent developments in quantum technology have resulted in a new generation of sensors for measuring inertial quantities, such as acceleration and rotation. These sensors can exhibit unprecedented sensitivity and accuracy when operated in space, where the free-fall interrogation time can be extended at will and where the environment noise is minimal. European laboratories have played a leading role in this field by developing concepts and tools to operate these quantum sensors in relevant environment, such as parabolic flights, free-fall towers, or sounding rockets. With the recent achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation on the International Space Station, the challenge is now to reach a technology readiness level sufficiently high at both component and system levels to provide "off the shelf"payload for future generations of space missions in geodesy or fundamental physics. In this roadmap, we provide an extensive review on the status of all common parts, needs, and subsystems for the application of atom-based interferometers in space, in order to push for the development of generic technology components.

Abstract

GRACE(-FO) monthly products are produced routinely using measurements of the orbital motion and the K-Band measurements of the distance between the two satellites. From these solutions, we gained great insight into the water cycle, ice mass balance, and ocean currents for the past twenty years. But what can we do, if we want to study sub­monthly processes? Ghobadi-Far et al. (2022) showed the possibility to use the intersatellite laser ranging measurements on GRACE Follow­On for the analysis of the gravity signal along the orbit. So far, this method has been used to e.g. study the mass change in the Amazon or to study storm surges over the northern sea (Weigelt et. al. 2023). In this study, we focus on the Greenland Ice Sheet and especially the region around Jakobshavn/llulissat glacier.

Abstract

One of the key components of this research has been the mapping of Antarctic bed topography and ice thickness parameters that are crucial for modelling ice flow and hence for predicting future ice loss andthe ensuing sea level rise. Supported by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the Bedmap3 Action Group aims not only to produce newgridded maps of ice thickness and bed topography for the internationalscientific community, but also to standardize and make available all thegeophysical survey data points used in producing the Bedmap griddedproducts. Here, we document the survey data used in the latest iteration,Bedmap3, incorporating and adding to all of the datasets previously used forBedmap1 and Bedmap2, including ice bed, surface and thickness point data from all Antarctic geophysical campaigns since the 1950s. More specifically,we describe the processes used to standardize and make these and futuresurveys and gridded datasets accessible under the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data principles. With the goals of making the gridding process reproducible and allowing scientists to re-use the data freely for their own analysis, we introduce the new SCAR Bedmap Data Portal(https://bedmap.scar.org, last access: 1 March 2023) created to provideunprecedented open access to these important datasets through a web-map interface. Abstract

In 2019 the French Aerospace Lab (ONERA) carried out an airborne gravity survey to test their quantum absolute gravimeter, GIRAFE, targeting three different locations in France. This was done with the support of the French Laboratory of National Meteorology (LCM-CNAM), the French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Office (SHOM), the French Laboratory of Geoscience Environment (GET) and the National Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Space). On board the aircraft was also a classical strapdown gravimeter provided by DTU Space, to be used as a reference for the GIRAFE observations.Here we will present the results of the survey along with a comparison with both the classical sensor, marine observations and altimetry derived gravity data. The results show that the GIRAFE estimates have improved dramatically since the first airborne test carried out in Iceland 2017, reaching an accuracy of 0.6 to 1.3 mGal. Abstract

What do the transport sector, planning for the offshore industry, sea level rise monitoring, and environmental and coastal protection have in common? For all these fields, sustainability is nowadays a key aspect, and they all rely on accurate positioning and navigation across borders and between land and sea. Today, this is primarily done employing satellite techniques, but users are largely unaware that this requires a harmonized geodetic infrastructure, i.e., data and services, to determine accurate coordinates and heights relative to a common reference system.Until now, heights on land and charted depths in the Baltic Sea region were heterogeneous and not directly comparable. For example, paper charts of different harbors had different zero levels between countries or even within the same country. Working with this kind of information required expert knowledge.The Baltic Sea Hydrographic Commission has therefore laid the foundation for a unified chart datum in the Baltic Sea, the BSCD2000. A substantial part of the work could be realized with co-funding from the EU in the project “Finalizing Surveys for the Baltic Motorways of the Sea (FAMOS)”. In this paper, the concept of BSCD2000 and its implications for the users are briefly outlined, and applications given the UN sustainability goals are demonstrated. Based on BSCD2000, seamless and user-friendly navigation using satellites will become available for the first time in the Baltic Sea. Human pressure on freshwater resources is increasing, as is human exposure to weather-related extremes (droughts, storms, floods) caused by climate change. Understanding these changes is pivotal for developing mitigation and adaptation strategies. The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) defines a suite of essential climate variables (ECVs), many related to the water cycle, required to systematically monitor Earth’s climate system. Since long-term observations of these ECVs are derived from different observation techniques, platforms, instruments, and retrieval algorithms, they often lack the accuracy, completeness, and resolution, to consistently characterize water cycle variability at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Here, we review the capability of ground-based and remotely sensed observations of water cycle ECVs to consistently observe the hydrological cycle. We evaluate the relevant land, atmosphere, and ocean water storages and the fluxes between them, including anthropogenic water use. Particularly, we assess how well they close on multiple temporal and spatial scales. On this basis, we discuss gaps in observation systems and formulate guidelines for future water cycle observation strategies. We conclude that, while long-term water cycle monitoring has greatly advanced in the past, many observational gaps still need to be overcome to close the water budget and enable a comprehensive and consistent assessment across scales. Trends in water cycle components can only be observed with great uncertainty, mainly due to insufficient length and homogeneity.
