In this dissertation, I use empirical methods to examine the relative performance of hedge funds, as well as their capacity constraints. The research is motivated by the increasingly high allocation of assets to hedge funds combined with limited regulation of the industry, making it an important area for academic research. By introducing new methods to examine hedge fund performance and capacity constraints, I aim to add new knowledge to the increasing discussion by industry participants and financial commentators and to provide novel insight for further research. This research takes the form of three studies. The first study seeks to identify which investor types are most informed. Specifically, I examine the informativeness of quarterly disclosed portfolio holdings across four institutional investor types: hedge funds, mutual funds, pension funds, and private banking firms. I find that overweight positions outperform underweight positions only for hedge funds. By decomposing holdings and stock returns, I find that hedge funds are superior to other institutional investors; both at picking industries and stocks, and that they are better at forecasting long and short-term returns. The second study, proposes a novel method to investigate capacity constraints in the hedge fund industry. I introduce the concept of cohort size, which is measured by the total assets of all hedge funds applying similar strategies. Together, these funds impact on opportunity and execution costs, so that the total cohort size, rather than simply the individual fund size, is associated with fund performance. The study finds cohort size to be negatively related to future quarterly returns. Finally, I introduce the cohort model, used to assess relative hedge fund manager skill. The model tested uses the correlation of monthly returns to locate cohorts, and forms peer benchmarksby averaging returns across the cohort. The advantages of the cohort model are that it is able to address the omitted variable problem present in factor models, and it is better able to disaggregate skill from factor exposures common to particular investment strategies. Consistent with improved identification of manager skill, cohort alpha shows stronger persistence over longer horizons.

The transport sector always strive towards reduced fuel consumption for heavydutyvehicles. One promising control strategy is to use Pulse and Glide. Themethod works by acceleration to a high speed and then glide in neutral gear to alow speed.Two different control strategies and four different glide options were investigated.The two strategies were either to follow the optimal BSFC-line or using optimalcontrol. For each strategy, different velocity spans between the upper and lowervelocity were tested.The results show that the fuel consumption can be reduced up to 8.1 % comparedto a constant speed driving strategy. The fuel consumption was reduced the mostfor lower velocities and if the difference between the upper and lower velocity forthe Pulse and Glide strategy was kept small. The fuel saving can be explaineddue to increased engine efficiency during the pulse. The results also show thatthe difference between the rule-based and optimization based control strategy issmall. It can be concluded that a near-optimal strategy for a heavy-duty vehicleutilizing Pulse and Glide is to always pulse on the optimal BSFC-line.

Humanity has been fishing for a long time, more specifically underice with nets, this could be a lot more efficient if it could beautomated in any stage of the procedure. The project aim is toconstruct an automated system for assisting in net fishing under ice.A navigation system using a GPS module, an IMU and radio transceiverwas designed, constructed and implemented on a car for testing. Theresult was a system that could navigate to either a predeterminedpoint or return to a point saved by the system. A "manual mode" wasalso implemented to be able to operate the system as a remotecontrolled car with a computer coupled to an Arduino with a radiotransceiver sending control signals to the prototype. The prototypeworked as intended, but would need further improvements to theautomated navigation system's precision to be ready for commercialuse. This should be the primary focus of any further development ofthis project.

Sammanfattning Turismen runtom i världen omsätter varje år flera miljarder kronor och denna omsättning förväntas öka. Utvecklingen leder till ett ökande av resor och destinationer. Europa står för en stor del av världens internationella turister och enbart från Sverige reste 10 miljoner människor utomlands under 2006. En typ av semesterresor som ökar i popularitet är skidsemestrar. Under säsongen 2005-2006 valde 300 000 svenskar att åka till utländska skidorter. Ett ökat intresse för skidresor innebär även ett ökat potentiellt kundunderlag för företagen i branschen. För att göra dessa potentiella kunder till verkliga kunder krävs kunskap om kundens köpbeteende. Resultatet av denna studie baseras på olika faktorer. Dessa är konsumentens egenskaper, både demografiska och psykografiska samt vilka attribut som skidresan innehåller. Tidigare forskning har visat hur samband kan uppstå mellan dessa faktorer. En konsuments egenskaper kan påverka hur han eller hon uppfattar ett attribut och därmed också köpbeslutsprocessen i helhet. Studiens omfattning gällande attribut är begränsad till pris, restid, skidåkning, samt fest och afterski. Detta leder fram till problemformulering och syfte. Problemformulering - Hur påverkar en konsuments personliga egenskaper och attityder dennes värdering av en skidsemester? Syftet med studien bygger på problemformuleringen; ”genom att undersöka om de personliga egenskaperna påverkar värderingen av en skidresas attribut vill vi öka förståelsen för hur dessa eventuella samband ser ut.” Denna studie har även ett delsyfte där vi ”vill undersöka om beslutsprocessen angående skidresor till Alperna skiljer sig mellan studenter som har varit där förut och vill åka tillbaka mot dem som inte varit där men vill åka dit.” Studien utgår från en kvantitativ ansats där vi använder oss av att deduktivt angreppssätt. Det empiriska materialet kommer från 100 besöksenkäter som lämnats ut till studenter vid Umeå Universitet. Detta material har sedan behandlats och analyserats med hjälp av statistikprogrammet SPSS. Teorierna i studien berör främst konsumentens beslutsprocess, personliga egenskaper samt attribut. Slutsatserna angående personliga egenskapers samband med värderingen av skidresors attribut är följande; Attributet Påverkas mest av Pris kön, livsstil, reslust/självbild Tid ålder, kultur, reslust/självbild Skidåkning ålder, inkomst, genus, kultur, livsstil Fest och Afterski kön, inkomst, kultur, reslust/självbild Angående delsyftet drogs följande slutsatser; • De som har varit i Alperna söker mer aktivt efter information än de som inte varit där. • De som har varit i Alperna har bättre kunskap om marknadens olika aktörer än de som inte varit där. • De som har varit i Alperna är mer villiga att ordna sin resa på egen hand än de som inte varit där. • De som har varit i Alperna påverkas lite starkare av vänners åsikter vid köp av skidresa än de som inte varit där.
