Search

We summarize the second radio synchrotron background workshop, which took place June 15-17, 2022 in Barolo, Italy. This meeting was convened because available measurements of the diffuse radio zero level continue to suggest that it is several times higher than can be attributed to known Galactic and extragalactic sources and processes, rendering it the least well understood electromagnetic background at present and a major outstanding question in astrophysics. The workshop agreed on the next priorities for investigations of this phenomenon, which include searching for evidence of the Radio Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, carrying out cross-correlation analyses of radio emission with other tracers, and supporting the completion of the 310 MHz absolutely calibrated sky map project., Comment: 34 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables, accepted to PASP, updated to in press version

The search for a particle dark matter signal in terms of radiation produced by dark matter annihilation or decay has to cope with the extreme faintness of the predicted signal and the presence of masking astrophysical backgrounds. It has been shown that using the correlated information between the dark matter distribution in the Universe with the fluctuations of the cosmic radiation fields has the potential to allow setting apart a pure dark matter signal from astrophysical emissions, since spatial fluctuations in the radiation field due to astrophysical sources and dark matter emission have different features. The cross-correlation technique has been proposed and adopted for dark matter studies by looking at dark matter halos (overdensities). In this paper we extend the technique by focusing on the information on dark matter distribution offered by cosmic voids, and by looking specifically at the gamma-ray dark matter emission: we show that, while being underdense and therefore producing a reduced emission as compared to halos, nevertheless in voids the relative size of the cross-correlation signal due to decaying dark matter vs. astrophysical sources is significantly more favourable, producing signal-to-background ratios $S/B$ (even significantly) larger than 1 for decay lifetimes up to $2 \times 10^{30}$ s. This is at variance with the case of halos, where $S/B$ is typically (even much) smaller than 1. We show that forthcoming galaxy surveys such as Euclid combined with future generation gamma-ray detectors with improved specifications have the ability to provide a hint of such a signal with a predicted significance up to $5.7\sigma$ for galaxies and $1.6\sigma$ for the cosmic shear. Astroparticle physics is undergoing a profound transformation, due to a series of extraordinary new results, such as the discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos with IceCube, the direct detection of gravitational waves with LIGO and Virgo, and many others. This white paper is the result of a collaborative effort that involved hundreds of theoretical astroparticle physicists and cosmologists, under the coordination of the European Consortium for Astroparticle Theory (EuCAPT). The precise measurement of cosmic-ray antinuclei serves as an important means for identifying the nature of dark matter and other new astrophysical phenomena, and could be used with other cosmic-ray species to understand cosmic-ray production and propagation in the Galaxy. For instance, low-energy antideuterons would provide a "smoking gun" signature of dark matter annihilation or decay, essentially free of astrophysical background. Studies in recent years have emphasized that models for cosmic-ray antideuterons must be considered together with the abundant cosmic antiprotons and any potential observation of antihelium. Therefore, a second dedicated Antideuteron Workshop was organized at UCLA in March 2019, bringing together a community of theorists and experimentalists to review the status of current observations of cosmic-ray antinuclei, the theoretical work towards understanding these signatures, and the potential of upcoming measurements to illuminate ongoing controversies. This review aims to synthesize this recent work and present implications for the upcoming decade of antinuclei observations and searches. This includes discussion of a possible dark matter signature in the AMS-02 antiproton spectrum, the most recent limits from BESS Polar-II on the cosmic antideuteron flux, and reports of candidate antihelium events by AMS-02; recent collider and cosmic-ray measurements relevant for antinuclei production models; the state of cosmic-ray transport models in light of AMS-02 and Voyager data; and the prospects for upcoming experiments, such as GAPS. In recent years, many gamma-ray sources have been identified, yet the unresolved component hosts valuable information on the faintest emission. In order to extract it, a cross-correlation with gravitational tracers of matter in the Universe has been shown to be a promising tool. We report here the first identification of a cross-correlation signal between gamma rays and the distribution of mass in the Universe probed by weak gravitational lensing. We use the Dark Energy Survey Y1 weak lensing catalogue and the Fermi Large Area Telescope 9-year gamma-ray data, obtaining a signal-to-noise ratio of 5.3. The signal is mostly localised at small angular scales and high gamma-ray energies, with a hint of correlation at extended separation. Blazar emission is likely the origin of the small-scale effect. The gamma-ray sky has been observed with unprecedented accuracy in the last decade by the Fermi large area telescope (LAT), allowing us to resolve and understand the high-energy Universe. The nature of the remaining unresolved emission (unresolved gamma-ray background, UGRB) below the LAT source detection threshold can be uncovered by characterizing the amplitude and angular scale of the UGRB fluctuation field. This work presents a measurement of the UGRB autocorrelation angular power spectrum based on eight years of Fermi LAT Pass 8 data products. The analysis is designed to be robust against contamination from resolved sources and noise systematics. The sensitivity to subthreshold sources is greatly enhanced with respect to previous measurements. We find evidence (with $\sim$3.7$\sigma$ significance) that the scenario in which two classes of sources contribute to the UGRB signal is favored over a single class. A double power law with exponential cutoff can explain the anisotropy energy spectrum well, with photon indices of the two populations being 2.55 $\pm$ 0.23 and 1.86 $\pm$ 0.15., Comment: 8 + 12 (SOM) pages, Contact author: Michela Negro (michela.negro@to.infn.it). The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a planned large radio interferometer designed to operate over a wide range of frequencies, and with an order of magnitude greater sensitivity and survey speed than any current radio telescope. The SKA will address many important topics in astronomy, ranging from planet formation to distant galaxies. However, in this work, we consider the perspective of the SKA as a facility for studying physics. We review four areas in which the SKA is expected to make major contributions to our understanding of fundamental physics: cosmic dawn and reionisation; gravity and gravitational radiation; cosmology and dark energy; and dark matter and astroparticle physics. These discussions demonstrate that the SKA will be a spectacular physics machine, which will provide many new breakthroughs and novel insights on matter, energy and spacetime., Comment: 69 pages, PASA, in press

We summarize the radio synchrotron background workshop that took place July 19-21, 2017 at the University of Richmond. This first scientific meeting dedicated to the topic was convened because current measurements of the diffuse radio monopole reveal a surface brightness that is several times higher than can be straightforwardly explained by known Galactic and extragalactic sources and processes, rendering it by far the least well understood photon background at present. It was the conclusion of a majority of the participants that the radio monopole level is at or near that reported by the ARCADE 2 experiment and inferred from several absolutely calibrated zero level lower frequency radio measurements, and unanimously agreed that the production of this level of surface brightness, if confirmed, represents a major outstanding question in astrophysics. e-ASTROGAM (enhanced ASTROGAM) is a breakthrough Observatory space mission, with a detector composed by a Silicon tracker, a calorimeter, and an anticoincidence system, dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.3 MeV to 3 GeV - the lower energy limit can be pushed to energies as low as 150 keV for the tracker, and to 30 keV for calorimetric detection. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the most powerful Galactic and extragalactic sources, elucidating the nature of their relativistic outflows and their effects on the surroundings. With a line sensitivity in the MeV energy range one to two orders of magnitude better than previous generation instruments, e-ASTROGAM will determine the origin of key isotopes fundamental for the understanding of supernova explosion and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. Photon counts statistics have recently been proven to provide a sensitive observable for characterizing gamma-ray source populations and for measuring the composition of the gamma-ray sky. In this work, we generalize the use of the standard 1-point probability distribution function (1pPDF) to decompose the high-latitude gamma-ray emission observed with Fermi-LAT into: (i) point-source contributions, (ii) the Galactic foreground contribution, and (iii) a diffuse isotropic background contribution. We analyze gamma-ray data in five adjacent energy bands between 1 and 171 GeV. We measure the source-count distribution dN/dS as a function of energy, and demonstrate that our results extend current measurements from source catalogs to the regime of so far undetected sources. Our method improves the sensitivity for resolving point-source populations by about one order of magnitude in flux. The dN/dS distribution as a function of flux is found to be compatible with a broken power law. We derive upper limits on further possible breaks as well as the angular power of unresolved sources. The identification of a solution to the dark matter problem has many arrows to its bow: if dark matter is a new elementary particle, both laboratory experiments and astrophysics can bring relevant and complementary pieces of information, that than can be confronted and composed to solve this intriguing puzzle. We discuss a left-right symmetric extension of the Standard Model in which the three additional right-handed neutrinos play a central role in explaining the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, the dark matter abundance and the ultra energetic signal detected by the IceCube experiment. The energy spectrum and neutrino flux measured by IceCube are ascribed to the decays of the lightest right-handed neutrino $N_1$, thus fixing its mass and lifetime, while the production of $N_1$ in the primordial thermal bath occurs via a freeze-in mechanism driven by the additional $SU(2)_R$ interactions. The constraints imposed by IceCube and the dark matter abundance allow nonetheless the heavier right-handed neutrinos to realize a standard type-I seesaw leptogenesis, with the $B-L$ asymmetry dominantly produced by the next-to-lightest neutrino $N_2$. Further consequences and predictions of the model are that: the $N_1$ production implies a specific power-law relation between the reheating temperature of the Universe and the vacuum expectation value of the $SU(2)_R$ triplet; leptogenesis imposes a lower bound on the reheating temperature of the Universe at $7\times10^9\,\mbox{GeV}$. The precise measurement of cosmic-ray antiparticles serves as important means for identifying the nature of dark matter. Recent years showed that identifying the nature of dark matter with cosmic-ray positrons and higher energy antiprotons is difficult, and has lead to a significantly increased interest in cosmic-ray antideuteron searches. Antideuterons may also be generated in dark matter annihilations or decays, offering a potential breakthrough in unexplored phase space for dark matter. Low-energy antideuterons are an important approach because the flux from dark matter interactions exceeds the background flux by more than two orders of magnitude in the low-energy range for a wide variety of models. This review is based on the "dbar14 - dedicated cosmic-ray antideuteron workshop", which brought together theorists and experimentalists in the field to discuss the current status, perspectives, and challenges for cosmic-ray antideuteron searches and discusses the motivation for antideuteron searches, the theoretical and experimental uncertainties of antideuteron production and propagation in our Galaxy, as well as give an experimental cosmic-ray antideuteron search status update. Recent years have seen increased theoretical and experimental effort towards the first-ever detection of cosmic-ray antideuterons, in particular as an indirect signature of dark matter annihilation or decay. In contrast to indirect dark matter searches using positrons, antiprotons, or gamma-rays, which suffer from relatively high and uncertain astrophysical backgrounds, searches with antideuterons benefit from very suppressed conventional backgrounds, offering a potential breakthrough in unexplored phase space for dark matter. This article is based on the first dedicated cosmic-ray antideuteron workshop, which was held at UCLA in June 2014. It reviews broad classes of dark matter candidates that result in detectable cosmic-ray antideuteron fluxes, as well as the status and prospects of current experimental searches. The coalescence model of antideuteron production and the influence of antideuteron measurements at particle colliders are discussed. This is followed by a review of the modeling of antideuteron propagation through the magnetic fields, plasma currents, and molecular material of our Galaxy, the solar system, the Earth's geomagnetic field, and the atmosphere. Finally, the three ongoing or planned experiments that are sensitive to cosmic-ray antideuterons, BESS, AMS-02, and GAPS, are detailed. As cosmic-ray antideuteron detection is a rare event search, multiple experiments with orthogonal techniques and backgrounds are essential. We report the measurement of the angular power spectrum of cross-correlation between the unresolved component of the Fermi-LAT gamma-ray sky-maps and the CMB lensing potential map reconstructed by the Planck satellite. The matter distribution in the Universe determines the bending of light coming from the last scattering surface. At the same time, the matter density drives the growth history of astrophysical objects, including their capability at generating non-thermal phenomena, which in turn give rise to gamma-ray emissions. The Planck lensing map provides information on the integrated distribution of matter, while the integrated history of gamma-ray emitters is imprinted in the Fermi-LAT sky maps. We report here the first evidence of their correlation. We find that the multipole dependence of the cross-correlation measurement is in agreement with current models of the gamma-ray luminosity function for AGN and star forming galaxies, with a statistical evidence of 3.0$\sigma$. Moreover, its amplitude can in general be matched only assuming that these extra-galactic emitters are also the bulk contribution of the measured isotopic gamma-ray background (IGRB) intensity. We perform a combined analysis of the recent AMS-02 data on electrons, positrons, electrons plus positrons and positron fraction, in a self-consistent framework where we realize a theoretical modeling of all the astrophysical components that can contribute to the observed fluxes in the whole energy range. The primary electron contribution is modeled through the sum of an average flux from distant sources and the fluxes from the local supernova remnants in the Green catalog. The secondary electron and positron fluxes originate from interactions on the interstellar medium of primary cosmic rays, for which we derive a novel determination by using AMS-02 proton and helium data. Primary positrons and electrons from pulsar wind nebulae in the ATNF catalog are included and studied in terms of their most significant (while loosely known) properties and under different assumptions (average contribution from the whole catalog, single dominant pulsar, a few dominant pulsars). We obtain a remarkable agreement between our various modeling and the AMS-02 data for all types of analysis, demonstrating that the whole AMS-02 leptonic data admit a self-consistent interpretation in terms of astrophysical contributions., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures and 4 tables, v2: accepted for publication in JCAP, minor changes relative to v1

Cosmic-ray antiprotons represent an important channel for dark matter indirect-detection studies. Current measurements of the antiproton flux at the top of the atmosphere and theoretical determinations of the secondary antiproton production in the Galaxy are in good agreement, with no manifest deviation which could point to an exotic contribution in this channel. Therefore, antiprotons can be used as a powerful tool for constraining particle dark matter properties. By using the spectrum of PAMELA data from 50 MV to 180 GV in rigidity, we derive bounds on the dark matter annihilation cross section (or decay rate, for decaying dark matter) for the whole spectrum of dark matter annihilation (decay) channels and under different hypotheses of cosmic-rays transport in the Galaxy and in the heliosphere. For typical models of galactic propagation, the constraints are significantly strong, setting a lower bound on the dark matter mass of a "thermal" relic at about 50-90 GeV for hadronic annihilation channels. These bounds are enhanced to about 150 GeV on the dark matter mass, when large cosmic-rays confinement volumes in the Galaxy are considered, and are reduced to 4-5 GeV for annihilation to light quarks (no bound for heavy-quark production) when the confinement volume is small. Bounds for dark matter lighter than few tens of GeV are due to the low energy part of the PAMELA spectrum, an energy region where solar modulation is relevant: to this aim, we have implemented a detailed solution of the transport equation in the heliosphere, which allowed us not only to extend bounds to light dark matter, but also to determine the uncertainty on the constraints arising from solar modulation modeling. Finally, we estimate the impact of soon-to-come AMS-02 data on the antiproton constraints., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures. The search for an excess of antideuterons in the cosmic rays flux has been proposed as a very promising channel for dark matter indirect detection, especially for WIMPs with a low or intermediate mass. With the development of the AMS experiment and the proposal of a future dedicated experiment, i.e. the General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS), there are exciting possibilities for a dark matter detection in the near future. We give an overview on the principal issues related both to the antideuterons production in dark matter annihilation reactions and to their propagation through the interstellar medium and the heliosphere, with a particular focus on the impact of various solar modulation models on the flux at Earth. The search for antideuterons in cosmic rays has been proposed as a promising channel for dark matter indirect detection, especially for dark matter particles with a low or intermediate mass. With the current operational phase of the AMS-02 experiment and the ongoing development of a future dedicated experiment, the General Antiparticle Spectrometer (GAPS), there are exciting prospects for a dark matter detection in the near future. In this paper we develop a detailed and complete re-analysis of the cosmic-ray antideuteron signal, by discussing the main relevant issues related to antideuteron production and propagation through the interstellar medium and the heliosphere. In particular, we first critically revisit the coalescence mechanism for antideuteron production in dark matter annihilation processes. Then, since antideuteron searches have their best prospects of detection at low kinetic energies where the effect of the solar wind and magnetic field are most relevant, we address the impact of solar modulation modeling on the antideuteron flux at the Earth by developing a full numerical 4D solution of cosmic rays transport in the heliosphere. We finally use these improved predictions to provide updated estimates of the reaching capabilities for AMS-02 and GAPS, compatible with the current constraints imposed by the antiprotons measurements of PAMELA. After the antiproton bound is applied, prospects of detection of up to about 15 events in GAPS LDB+ and AMS-02 missions are found, depending on the dark matter mass, annihilation rate and production channel from one side, and on the coalescence process, galactic and solar transport parameters on the other., Comment: 48 pages, 31 figures; v2 matches version published on JCAP. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of assuming that the 125 GeV boson measured at the LHC coincides with one of the two CP-even Higgs bosons of an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model at the electroweak scale. We consider the two ensuing scenarios and discuss critically the role of the various experimental data (mainly obtained at colliders and at B-factories) which provide actual or potential constraints to supersymmetric properties. Both cosmic shear and cosmological gamma-ray emission stem from the presence of Dark Matter (DM) in the Universe: DM structures are responsible for the bending of light in the weak lensing regime and those same objects can emit gamma-rays, either because they host astrophysical sources (active galactic nuclei or star-forming galaxies) or directly by DM annihilations (or decays, depending on the properties of the DM particle). Such gamma-rays should therefore exhibit strong correlation with the cosmic shear signal. In this Letter, we compute the cross-correlation angular power spectrum of cosmic shear and gamma-rays produced by the annihilation/decay of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) DM, as well as from astrophysical sources. We show that this observable provides novel information on the composition of the Extra-galactic Gamma-ray Background (EGB), since the amplitude and shape of the cross-correlation signal strongly depends on which class of source is responsible for the gamma-ray emission. If the DM contribution to the EGB is significant (at least in a definite energy range), although compatible with current observational bounds, its strong correlation with the cosmic shear makes such signal potentially detectable by combining Fermi-LAT data with forthcoming galaxy surveys, like Dark Energy Survey and Euclid. We review the status of the phenomenology of light neutralinos in an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) at the electroweak scale, in light of new results obtained at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. First we consider the impact of the new data obtained by the CMS Collaboration on the search for the Higgs boson decay into a tau pair, and by the CMS and LHCb Collaborations on the branching ratio for the decay $B_s \rightarrow {\mu}^{+} + {\mu}^{-}$. Then we examine the possible implications of the excess of events found by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations in a search for a SM--like Higgs boson around a mass of 126 GeV, with a most likely mass region (95% CL) restricted to 115.5--131 GeV (global statistical significance about 2.3 $\sigma$). From the first set of data we update the lower bound of the neutralino mass to be about 18 GeV. From the second set of measurements we derive that the excess around $m^{SM}_H$ = 126 GeV, which however needs a confirmation by further runs at the LHC, would imply a neutralino in the mass range 18 GeV $\lsim m_{\chi} \lsim$ 38 GeV, with neutralino--nucleon elastic cross sections fitting well the results of the dark matter direct search experiments DAMA/LIBRA and CRESST., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, typeset with ReVTeX4. v2:discussion on LHC Higgs excess extended and one figure added. We present a detailed analysis of the radio synchrotron emission induced by WIMP dark matter annihilations and decays in extragalactic halos. We compute intensity, angular correlation, and source counts and discuss the impact on the expected signals of dark matter clustering, as well as of other astrophysical uncertainties as magnetic fields and spatial diffusion. Bounds on dark matter microscopic properties are then derived, and, depending on the specific set of assumptions, they are competitive with constraints from other indirect dark matter searches. At GHz frequencies, dark matter sources can become a significant fraction of the total number of sources with brightness below the microJansky level. Dark matter annihilations in the Galactic halo inject relativistic electrons and positrons which in turn generate a synchrotron radiation when interacting with the galactic magnetic field. We calculate the synchrotron flux for various dark matter annihilation channels, masses, and astrophysical assumptions in the low-frequency range and compare our results with radio surveys from 22 MHz to 1420 MHz. We find that current observations are able to constrain particle dark matter with "thermal" annihilation cross-sections, i.e. (\sigma v) = 3 x 10^-26 cm^3/s, and masses M_DM < 10 GeV. We discuss the dependence of these bounds on the astrophysical assumptions, namely galactic dark matter distribution, cosmic rays propagation parameters, and structure of the galactic magnetic field. We discuss the positive indications of a possible dark matter signal in direct detection experiments in terms of a mechanism of interaction between the dark matter particle and the nuclei occurring via the exchange of a light mediator, resulting in a long-range interaction. We analyze the annual modulation results observed by the DAMA and CoGeNT experiments and the observed excess of events of CRESST. In our analysis, we discuss the relevance of uncertainties related to the velocity distribution of galactic dark matter and to the channeling effect in NaI. We find that a long-range force is a viable mechanism, which can provide full agreement between the reconstructed dark matter properties from the various experimental data sets, especially for masses of the light mediator in the 10-30 MeV range and a light dark matter with a mass around 10 GeV. We address the problem of a search at the LHC for a neutralino whose mass is around 10 GeV, i.e. in the range of interest for present data of direct search for dark matter particles in the galactic halo. This light neutralino is here implemented in an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model at the electroweak scale without requirement of a gaugino-mass unification at a grand unification scale. The ARCADE 2 Collaboration has recently measured an isotropic radio emission which is significantly brighter than the expected contributions from known extra-galactic sources. The simplest explanation of such excess involves a "new" population of unresolved sources which become the most numerous at very low (observationally unreached) brightness. We investigate this scenario in terms of synchrotron radiation induced by WIMP annihilations or decays in extragalactic halos. The long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect measured by the DAMA Collaboration, which fulfills all the requirements of a dark matter annual modulation signature, and the new result by the CoGeNT experiment that shows a similar behavior are comparatively examined under the hypothesis of a dark matter candidate particle interacting with the detectors' nuclei by a coherent elastic process. The ensuing physical regions in the plane of the dark matter-particle mass versus the dark matter-particle nucleon cross-section are derived for various galactic halo models and by taking into account the impact of various experimental uncertainties. It is shown that the DAMA and the CoGeNT regions agree well between each other and are well fitted by a supersymmetric model with light neutralinos which satisfies all available experimental constraints, including the most recent results from CMS and ATLAS at the CERN Large Hadron Collider., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the impact for light neutralinos in an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model of the recent results presented by the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider for a search of supersymmetry in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 35 inverse pb. We find that, in the specific case of light neutralinos, efficiencies for the specific signature searched by ATLAS (jets+missing transverse energy and an isolated lepton) imply a lower sensitivity compared to CMS (which searches for jets +missing transverse energy). Focusing on the CMS bound, if squark soft masses of the three families are assumed to be degenerate, the combination of the ensuing constraint on squark and gluino masses with the experimental limit on the b to s + gamma decay imply a lower bound on the neutralino mass that can reach the value of 11.9 GeV, depending on the gluino mass. On the other hand, when the universality condition among squark soft parameters is relaxed, the lower bound on the neutralino mass is not constrained by the CMS measurement and then remains at the value 7.5 GeV derived in previous papers., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, typeset with ReVTeX4. We examine the status of light neutralinos in an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) at the electroweak scale which was considered in the past and discussed in terms of the available data of direct searches for dark matter (DM) particles. Our reanalysis is prompted by new measurements at the Tevatron and B-factories which might potentially provide significant constraints on the MSSM model. Here we examine in detail all these new data and show that the present published results from the Tevatron and B-factories have only a mild effect on the original light neutralino population. This population, which fits quite well the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation data, would also agree with the preliminary results of CDMS, CoGeNT and CRESST, should these data, which are at present only hints or excesses of events over the expected backgrounds, be interpreted as authentic signals of DM. For the neutralino mass we find a lower bound of 7-8 GeV. The indirect detection of particle dark matter (DM) is based on the search for anomalous components in cosmic rays (CRs) due to the annihilation of DM pairs in the galactic halo, on the top of the standard astrophysical production. These additional exotic components are potentially detectable at Earth as spectral distortions for the various cosmic radiations: $\chi + \chi \to q \bar{q}, W^+ W^-, ... \to \bar{p}, \bar{D}, e^+ \gamma and \nu's $. Detection of the DM annihilation products has motivated the spectacular development of several new experimental techniques. They range from detectors on ballons or in space for the study of antimatter and gamma-rays, to large area cosmic-ray and gamma-ray detecors on the ground to neutrino telescopes underground for the study of the neutrino component. We analyse predictions of the CR lepton fluxes at the Earth of both secondary and primary origins, evaluate the theoretical uncertainties, and determine their level of consistency with respect to the available data. For propagation, we use a relativistic treatment of the energy losses for which we provide useful parameterizations. We compute the secondary components by improving on the method that we derived earlier for positrons. For primaries, we estimate the contributions from astrophysical sources (supernova remnants and pulsars) by considering all known local objects within 2 kpc and a smooth distribution beyond. We find that the electron flux in the energy range 5-30 GeV is well reproduced by a smooth distant distribution of sources with index $\gamma\sim 2.3-2.4$, while local sources dominate the flux at higher energy. For positrons, local pulsars have an important effect above 5-10 GeV. Uncertainties affecting the source modeling and propagation are degenerate and each translates into about one order of magnitude error in terms of local flux. The spectral shape at high energy is weakly correlated with the spectral indices of local sources, but more strongly with the hierarchy in their distance, age and power. Despite the large theoretical errors that we describe, our global and self-consistent analysis can explain all available data without over-tuning the parameters, and therefore without the need to consider any exotic physics. Though a \emph{standard paradigm} of Galactic CRs is well established, our results show that we can hardly talk about any \emph{standard model} of CR leptons, because of the very large theoretical uncertainties. Alternative cosmologies, based on extensions of General Relativity, predict modified thermal histories in the Early Universe during the pre Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) era, epoch which is not directly constrained by cosmological observations. When the expansion rate is enhanced with respect to the standard case, thermal relics typically decouple with larger relic abundances. The correct value of the relic abundance is therefore obtained for larger annihilation cross--sections, as compared to standard cosmology. A direct consequence is that indirect detection rates are enhanced. Extending previous analyses of ours, we derive updated astrophysical bounds on the dark matter annihilation cross sections and use them to constrain alternative cosmologies in the pre--BBN era. We also determine the characteristics of these alternative cosmologies in order to provide the correct value of relic abundance for a thermal relic for the (large) annihilation cross--section required to explain the PAMELA results on the positron fraction, therefore providing a "cosmological boost" solution to the dark matter interpretation of the PAMELA data., Comment: 19 pages, 27 figures, matches published version

The CDMS Collaboration has presented its results for the final exposure of the CDMS II experiment and reports that two candidate events for dark matter would survive after application of the various discrimination and subtraction procedures inherent in their analysis. We present a detailed analysis of the neutrino-induced muon signals coming from neutralino pair-annihilations inside the Sun and the Earth with particular emphasis for light neutralinos. The theoretical model considered is an effective MSSM without gaugino-mass unification, which allows neutralinos of light masses (below 50 GeV). The muon events are divided in through-going and stopping muons, using the geometry of the Super-Kamiokande detector. In the evaluation of the signals, we take into account the relevant hadronic and astrophysics uncertainties and include neutrino oscillation and propagation properties in a consistent way. We derive the ranges of neutralino masses which could be explored at neutrino telescopes with a low muon-energy threshold (around 1 GeV) depending on the category of events and on the values of the various astrophysics and particle-physics parameters. A final analysis is focussed to the upward muon fluxes which could be generated by those neutralino configurations which are able to explain the annual modulation data of the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. We show how combining these data with measurements at neutrino telescopes could help in pinning down the features of the DM particle and in restraining the ranges of the many quantities (of astrophysics and particle-physics origins) which enter in the evaluations and still suffer from large uncertainties., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, a few references and minor comments added

Secondary positrons are produced by spallation of cosmic rays within the interstellar gas. Measurements have been typically expressed in terms of the positron fraction, which exhibits an increase above 10 GeV. Many scenarios have been proposed to explain this feature, among them some additional primary positrons originating from dark matter annihilation in the Galaxy. The PAMELA satellite has provided high quality data that has enabled high accuracy statistical analyses to be made, showing that the increase in the positron fraction extends up to about 100 GeV. It is therefore of paramount importance to constrain theoretically the expected secondary positron flux to interpret the observations in an accurate way. We find the secondary positron flux to be reproduced well by the available observations, and to have theoretical uncertainties that we quantify to be as large as about one order of magnitude. We also discuss the positron fraction issue and find that our predictions may be consistent with the data taken before PAMELA. For PAMELA data, we find that an excess is probably present after considering uncertainties in the positron flux, although its amplitude depends strongly on the assumptions made in relation to the electron flux. By fitting the current electron data, we show that when considering a soft electron spectrum, the amplitude of the excess might be far lower than usually claimed. We provide fresh insights that may help to explain the positron data with or without new physical model ingredients. PAMELA observations and the forthcoming AMS-02 mission will allow stronger constraints to be aplaced on the cosmic--ray transport parameters, and are likely to reduce drastically the theoretical uncertainties., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. The most recent results from direct searches for dark matter particles in the galactic halo are examined in terms of an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model at the electroweak scale without gaugino masses unification. We show that the annual modulation effect at 8.2 $\sigma$ C.L. recently presented by the DAMA Collaboration, as the result of a combined analysis of the DAMA/NaI and the DAMA/LIBRA experiments for a total exposure of 0.82 ton yr, fits remarkably well with what expected for relic neutralinos for a wide variety of WIMP distribution functions. Bounds derivable from other measurements of direct searches for dark matter particles are analyzed. We stress the role played by the uncertainties affecting the neutralino--quark couplings arising from the involved hadronic quantities. We also examine how present data on cosmic antiprotons can help in constraining the neutralino configurations selected by the DAMA effect, in connection with the values of the astrophysical parameters. Perspectives for measurement of antideuterons possibly produced in the galactic halo by self--annihilation of neutralinos belonging to the DAMA configurations are examined. We show that within the inverse seesaw mechanism for generating neutrino masses minimal supergravity is more likely to have a sneutrino as the lightest superparticle than the conventional neutralino. We also demonstrate that such schemes naturally reconcile the small neutrino masses with the correct relic sneutrino dark matter abundance and accessible direct detection rates in nuclear recoil experiments., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Two recent papers reconsider the possibility that the excess of microwave emission from a region within $\sim 20^0$ of the galactic center (the {\it WMAP haze}), measured by WMAP, can be due to the synchrotron emission originated by neutralino self-annihilation; on the basis of this possible occurrence, also upper bounds on the neutralino self-annihilation cross--section are suggested. In the present note, we show that in the common case of thermal WIMPs in a standard cosmological model, when the rescaling of the galactic WIMP density is duly taken into account for subdominant WIMPs, the upper bound applicable generically to {\it any} signal due to self-conjugate WIMPs is more stringent than the ones obtained from analysis of the WMAP haze. We also argue that an experimental upper bound, which can compete with our generic upper limit, can rather be derived from measurements of cosmic antiproton fluxes, for some values of the parameters of the astrophysical propagation model. Finally, we comment on the possible impact of our generic upper bound on the interpretation of the WMAP haze in terms of thermal neutralinos in a standard cosmological scheme., Comment: 3 pages, comments and 1 figure added

We study how the properties of the four neutralino states, chi_i (i = 1, 2, 3, 4), can be investigated at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in the case when the lightest one, chi_1, has a mass m_chi < 50 GeV and is stable. This situation arises naturally in supersymmetric models where gaugino masses are not unified at a Grand Unified (GUT) scale and R-parity is conserved. The main features of these neutralino states are established by analytical and numerical analyses, and two scenarios are singled out on the basis of the cosmological properties required for the relic neutralinos. Signals expected at LHC are discussed through the main chain processes started by a squark, produced in the initial proton-proton scattering. We motivate the selection of some convenient benchmarks, in the light of the spectroscopical properties (mass spectrum and transitions) of the four neutralino states. Branching ratios and the expected total number of events are derived in the various benchmarks, and their relevance for experimental determination of neutralino properties is finally discussed., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures

We determine under what conditions Scalar Tensor cosmologies predict an expansion rate which is reduced as compared to the standard General Relativity case. We show that ST theories with a single matter sector typically predict an enchanced Hubble rate in the past, as a consequence of the requirement of an attractive fixed point towards General Relativity at late times. Instead, when additional matter sectors with different conformal factors are added, the late time convergence to General Relativity is mantained and at the same time a reduced expansion rate in the past can be driven. For suitable choices of the parameters which govern the scalar field evolution, a sizeable reduction (up to about 2 orders of magnitude) of the Hubble rate prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis can be obtained. We then discuss the impact of these cosmological models on the relic abundance of dark matter is minimal Supergravity models: we show that the cosmologically allowed regions in parameter space are significantly enlarged, implying a change in the potential reach of LHC on the neutralino phenomenology., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Indirect detection signals from dark matter annihilation are studied in the positron channel. We discuss in detail the positron propagation inside the galactic medium: we present novel solutions of the diffusion and propagation equations and we focus on the determination of the astrophysical uncertainties which affect the positron dark matter signal. We find dark matter scenarios and propagation models that nicely fit existing data on the positron fraction. Finally, we present predictions both on the positron fraction and on the flux for already running or planned space experiments, concluding that they have the potential to discriminate a possible signal from the background and, in some cases, to distinguish among different astrophysical propagation models., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures. The DAMA Collaboration has recently analyzed its data of the extensive WIMP direct search (DAMA/NaI) which detected an annual modulation, by taking into account the channelling effect which occurs when an ion traverses a detector with a crystalline structure. Among possible implications, this Collaboration has considered the case of a coherent WIMP-nucleus interaction and then derived the form of the annual modulation region in the plane of the WIMP-nucleon cross section versus the WIMP mass, using a specific modelling for the channelling effect. In the present paper we first show that light neutralinos fit the annual modulation region also when channelling is taken into account. To discuss the connection with indirect signals consisting in galactic antimatter, in our analysis we pick up a specific galactic model, the cored isothermal-sphere. In this scheme we determine the sets of supersymmetric models selected by the annual modulation regions and then prove that these sets are compatible with the available data on galactic antiprotons. We comment on implications when other galactic distribution functions are employed. Finally, we show that future measurements on galactic antiprotons and antideuterons will be able to shed further light on the populations of light neutralinos singled out by the annual modulation data., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. The possibility to use $\gamma$--ray data from the Galactic Center (GC) to constrain the cosmological evolution of the Universe in a phase prior to primordial nucleosyntesis, namely around the time of cold dark matter (CDM) decoupling, is analyzed. The basic idea is that in a modified cosmological scenario, where the Hubble expansion rate is enhanced with respect to the standard case, the CDM decoupling is anticipated and the relic abundance of a given dark matter (DM) candidate enhanced. This implies that the present amount of CDM in the Universe may be explained by a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) which possesses annihilation cross section (much) larger than in standard cosmology. This enhanced annihilation implies larger fluxes of indirect detection signals of CDM. We show that the HESS measurements can set bounds for WIMPs heavier than a few hundreds of GeV, depending on the actual DM halo profile. These results are complementary to those obtained in a previous analysis based on cosmic antiprotons. For a Moore DM profile, $\gamma$--ray data limit the maximal Hubble rate enhancement to be below a factor of 100. Moreover, a WIMP heavier than 1 TeV is not compatible with a cosmological scenario with enhanced expansion rate prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). Less steep DM profiles provide less stringent bounds, depending of the cosmological scenario., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures
