Abstract

In the nanometric scale, alloy nanomaterials behave as new materials since they are able to display structures and properties which are different from those of the pure metal nanostructures or bulk alloys. In this work, the compositional characteristics of AlCu alloy nanoparticles obtained by {\dag}Femtosecond Laser Ablation Synthesis in Solution (FLASiS) on solid targets with different percentages of Al and Cu were studied. Morphology, structure, composition and plasmonic behaviour of the nanoparticles were analysed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Optical Extinction Spectroscopy (OES). From the obtained results, underlying formation mechanism and a configuration model of a host alumina matrix with copper inclusions is proposed. Analysis of the plasmonic resonance spectral region in the extinction spectra of the synthesized colloids using this model show that the nanoparticles have a Cu filling factors of about 0.02 which agrees with those determined independently from TEM images. The amount of Al and Cu components in the nanoparticle depends on their relative percentages in the initial solid target. Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 2 (EUSO-SPB2) flew on May 13$^{\text{th}}$ and 14$^{\text{th}}$ of 2023. Consisting of two novel optical telescopes, the payload utilized next-generation instrumentation for the observations of extensive air showers from near space. One instrument, the fluorescence telescope (FT) searched for Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) by recording the atmosphere below the balloon in the near-UV with a 1~$\mu$s time resolution using 108 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes with a total of 6,912 channels. Validated by pre-flight measurements during a field campaign, the energy threshold was estimated around 2~EeV with an expected event rate of approximately 1 event per 10 hours of observation. Based on the limited time afloat, the expected number of UHECR observations throughout the flight is between 0 and 2. Consistent with this expectation, no UHECR candidate events have been found. The majority of events appear to be detector artifacts that were not rejected properly due to a shortened commissioning phase. Despite the earlier-than-expected termination of the flight, data were recorded which provide insights into the detectors stability in the near-space environment as well as the diffuse ultraviolet emissivity of the atmosphere, both of which are impactful to future experiments.

Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Abstract

Abstract Aims Vericiguat is a soluble guanylate cyclase stimulator and improves survival in patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and an increased risk of decompensation. As real‐world data on how many patients could be eligible for vericiguat therapy derive from outdated registries, we aimed to assess eligibility in a prospective cohort of patients with HF. Methods and results Data from consecutive HF patients undergoing an elective ambulatory visit at five university hospitals from 3 July to 28 July 2023 were collected. Independent investigators assessed which patients (i) met the eligibility criteria of the VICTORIA trial, (ii) complied with HF guideline recommendations, (iii) met regulatory agency criteria, or (iv) met criteria for refundability according to the Italian regulatory agency. Abstract

JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Abstract

EUSO-SPB2 (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon II) is a precursor mission for a future space observatory for multi-messenger astrophysics, planned to be launched in Spring 2023 with a flight duration target of 100 days. The Fluorescence Telescope (FT) hosted on board is designed to detect Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays via the UV fluorescence emission of the Extensive Air Showers in the atmosphere. The Data Processor (DP) of the FT is the component of the electronics system that performs data management and instrument control for the telescope. The DP controls front-end electronics, tags events with arrival time and payload position through a GPS system, provides signals for time synchronization of the event and measures the live and dead time of the telescope. Furthermore, it manages mass memory for data storage, performs housekeeping monitoring, and controls the power-on and power-off sequences. Finally, the data processor combines the data from the PDMs and onboard differential GPS and prioritizes data for download. The long duration of the flight poses strict requirements on electronics and data handling. The operations at high altitude in an unpressurized environment represent a technological challenge for heat dissipation. This contribution will provide an overview of the innovative elements developed and the results of the integration and field test campaigns. We will also present some preliminary analysis of the performance during the flight.

Abstract

Introduction Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome. Accurate risk stratification and early diagnosis of HF are challenging as its signs and symptoms are non-specific. We propose to address this global challenge by developing the STRATIFYHF artificial intelligence-driven decision support system (DSS), which uses novel analytical methods in determining the risk, diagnosis and prognosis of HF. The primary aim of the present study is to collect prospective clinical data to validate the STRATIFYHF DSS (in terms of diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity) as a tool to predict the risk, diagnosis and progression of HF. The secondary outcomes are the demographic and clinical predictors of risk, diagnosis and progression of HF.Methods and analysis STRATIFYHF is a prospective, multicentre, longitudinal study that will recruit up to 1600 individuals (n=800 suspected/at risk of HF and n=800 diagnosed with HF) aged ≥45 years old, with up to 24 months of follow-up observations. Individuals suspected of HF will be divided into two categories based on current definitions and predefined inclusion criteria. All participants will have their medical history recorded, along with data on physical examination (signs and symptoms), blood tests including serum natriuretic peptides levels, ECG and echocardiogram results, as well as demographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle data, and use of complete novel technologies (cardiac output response to stress test and voice recognition biomarkers). All measurements will be recorded at baseline and at 12-month follow-up, with medical history and hospitalisation also recorded at 24-month follow-up. Cardiovascular MRI assessment will be completed in a subset of participants (n=20–40) from eligible clinical centres only at baseline. Each clinical centre will recruit a subset of participants (n=30) who will complete a 6-month home-based monitoring of clinical characteristics and accelerometry (wrist-worn monitor) to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the STRATIFYHF mobile application. Focus groups and semistructured interviews will be conducted with up to 15 healthcare professionals and up to 20 study participants (10 at risk of HF and 10 diagnosed with HF) to explore the needs of patients and healthcare professionals prior to the development of the STRATIFYHF DSS and to evaluate the acceptability of this mobile application.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval has been granted by the East Midlands - Leicester Central Research Ethics Committee (24/EM/0101). Dissemination activities will include journal publications and presentations at conferences, as well as development of training materials and delivery of focused training on the STRATIFYHF DSS and mobile application. We will develop and propose policy guidelines for integration of the STRATIFYHF DSS and mobile application into the standard of care in the HF care pathway.Trial registration number NCT06377319.

Abstract

The concept of Simplexity has emerged several times in many discourses within different scientific domains: it somehow refers to the intertwined nature of Simplicity and Complexity. To the eye of the scientist beholder, any of these contributions renders different facets. None of those is negligible nor seems to be superior. Starting from this consideration, this paper uses a recent Design Science Research based method to develop a conceptual artefact allowing the entire realm of Complexity Sciences to unravel the Complexity of Simplexity. By moving through an in-depth systematic literature review, this research mined the nuances of Simplexity's meaning from several different research domains throughout seventy years, and then distilled those nuances. The resulting conceptual artefacts are possibly useful any time there is the need for dealing with Complexity – from the design of cyber-socio-technical systems to the analysis of protein networks – paving the way for a shared language for Psychologists, Neuro-linguists, Designers, Resilience Engineers, Biologists, and other Complexity Scientists.

Abstract

Preservation of the chemical and structural integrity of samples that will be brought back from Mars is paramount to achieving the scientific objectives of MSR. Given our knowledge of the nature of the samples retrieved at Jezero by Perseverance, at least two options need to be tested for opening the sample tubes: (1) One or two radial cuts at the end of the tube to slide the sample out. (2) Two radial cuts at the ends of the tube and two longitudinal cuts to lift the upper half of the tube and access the sample. Strategy 1 will likely minimize contamination but incurs the risk of affecting the physical integrity of weakly consolidated samples. Strategy 2 will be optimal for preserving the physical integrity of the samples but increases the risk of contamination and mishandling of the sample as more manipulations and additional equipment will be needed. A flexible approach to opening the sample tubes is therefore required, and several options need to be available, depending on the nature of the rock samples returned. Both opening strategies 1 and 2 may need to be available when the samples are returned to handle different sample types (e.g., loosely bound sediments vs. indurated magmatic rocks). This question should be revisited after engineering tests are performed on analogue samples. Abstract

In this study, we examine the association between audit fees and client participation in underfunded multiemployer pension plans. Consistent with our hypothesis, our regression results find that audit fees for firms with underfunded balances in multiemployer pension plans (MEPPs) are consistently higher and statistically significant compared with firms without MEPPs after controlling for other factors known to influence audit fees. The fee premium for firms with a net underfunded plan balance is 6.2%. Thus, the magnitude of the economic effect appears to be an average increase in audit fees of about $280,240. Furthermore, we find a significant inverse relationship between audit fees and estimated MEPP underfunding when firms with higher unionization levels. Our findings are likely to be of interest to standards-setters, regulators, and policymakers in the United States, European Union, and other countries as appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Enceladus, an icy moon of Saturn, possesses an internal water ocean and jets expelling ocean material into space. Cassini investigations indicated that the subsurface ocean could be a habitable environment having a complex interaction with the rocky core. Further investigation of the composition of the plume formed by the jets is necessary to fully understand the ocean, its potential habitability, and what it tells us about Enceladus' origin. Moonraker has been proposed as an ESA M-class mission designed to orbit Saturn and perform multiple flybys of Enceladus, focusing on traversals of the plume. The proposed Moonraker mission consists of an ESA-provided platform, with strong heritage from JUICE and Mars Sample Return, and carrying a suite of instruments dedicated to plume and surface analysis. The nominal Moonraker mission has a duration of 13.5 years. It includes a 23-flyby segment with 189 days allocated for the science phase, and can be expanded with additional segments if resources allow. The mission concept consists in investigating: i) the habitability conditions of present-day Enceladus and its internal ocean, ii) the mechanisms at play for the communication between the internal ocean and the surface of the South Polar Terrain, and iii) the formation conditions of the moon. Moonraker, thanks to state-of-the-art instruments representing a significant improvement over Cassini's payload, would quantify the abundance of key species in the plume, isotopic ratios, and physical parameters of the plume and the surface. Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic performance of the 70-gene signature, MammaPrint, in an Italian single-center prospective cohort of early-stage intermediate-risk breast cancer (BC) patients. Methods: A total of 195 eligible early BC cases were tested for genomic risk between 2006 and 2013. In this retrospective analysis, the association of genomic risk with distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed using Cox regression models, adjusting for clinical and pathological tumor characteristics. Results: MammaPrint identified 118 (60.5 %) patients with genomically Low Risk tumors and 77 (39.5 %) patients with genomically High Risk tumors. Age, menopausal status, tumor size, receptor status, and nodal status were comparable between MammaPrint Risk categories. The median follow-up was 8.4 years for DMFS and 9.3 years for OS; 8-year follow-up was reported for both endpoints. The 8-year DMFS was 90.4 % (95 % CI 84.9–95.9) in patients with MammaPrint Low Risk tumors compared to 60.8 % (95 % CI 49.8–71.8) for patients with High Risk tumors. Patients with MammaPrint Low Risk tumors exhibited significantly superior 8-year OS (97.3 %; 95 % CI 94.4–100) compared with MammaPrint High Risk tumors (89.5 %; 95 % CI 82.6–96.4; p = 0.028). Multivariate analyses identified MammaPrint as significantly associated with 8-year DMFS and MammaPrint together with Progesterone Receptor positivity with 8-year OS. Conclusion: The prognostic performance of MammaPrint was demonstrated in early-stage clinically intermediate to high-risk BC patients. Moreover, patients with MammaPrint Low Risk tumors had good outcome regardless of treatment regimen, thus supporting personalized treatment choices.

Abstract

BackgroundObsessive-compulsive (OC) traits (i.e., tendency to implement stereotyped behaviors to avoid negative consequences) are transversally observed in psychiatric disorders largely differing in terms of clinical manifestations and etiopathogenesis. Interestingly, OC traits were also extensively found in the prodromal phases of the full-blown psychopathology and in healthy relatives of affected individuals. Moreover, OC traits were found to be associated—and possibly underlain by—cognitive control impairments. Nonetheless, the role of such interplay in the onset of OC disorders is yet to be understood. We hypothesized that OC traits are associated with abnormalities in proactively implement cognitive control for solving conflict.MethodsWe administered healthy individuals (n = 104) with the perifoveal spatial Stroop task to measure their ability of solving conflict in a proactive fashion, and with Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (OCI) to stratify population according to the severity of OC traits.ResultsAnalysis of response times by means of Linear Mixed-effect models revealed that proactive control performance was not associated with and the severity of OC traits. Furthermore, an equivalence test (Two One-Sided Test) revealed that the association between OCI scores and task performance was equivalent to zero.ConclusionThese results suggest that the interplay between OC traits and proactive control abnormalities might not contribute to the development of OC-related disorders. Therefore, the role of other cognitive endophenotypes should be scrutinized for exploiting alternative prevention and intervention strategies.

50. Advancements in Instrumental Odour Monitoring System from Stationary Emission Sources

Abstract

In the past few years, significant advancements have been made in the development of Instrumental Odour Monitoring Systems, though very little data is available for IOMS measurement at emission sources and it is believed that the main cause is associated with issues affecting continuous sampling from streams with high humidity. In this paper we show an approach developed for continuous sampling from flow ducts aimed at feeding a trained IOMS with DO data collected from the same sampling system. The system was devised to sequentially sample from two duct flows, enabling the characterization of input and output odour flows through an odour abatement device while monitoring its efficiency in odour reduction. The primary design issues addressed include: 1) decreasing relative humidity through controlled dilution, 2) implementing hardware and software adjustments to account for temperature fluctuations during extended operation and 3) developing algorithms to establish correlations between odour concentrations obtained through sampling/measurement according to EN 13725:2022 and the instrumental odour concentration provided by IOMS. Here we present the field-calibrated results of the continuous sampling coupled with IOMS: the device was installed across the flow ducts both upstream and downstream of an odour abatement unit within a waste treatment plant. After the final training/calibration, the system operated for several weeks and the collected data of instrumental odour concentration are presented: the analysis covers both the odour fluctuations over the plant’s daily working cycle and the efficiency of the installed abatement unit in reducing instrumental odour concentration.
